2. Identification of the Sex Pheromone of the Asparagus Moth, Parahypopta Caestrum (Lepidoptera, Cossidae).

Chemical, electrophysiological, and field trapping experiments were carried out to identify the female-produced sex pheromone of the asparagus moth, Parahypopta caestrum, a very serious pests of asparagus cultivations in southern Europe. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and electroantennogram detection (GC-MS-EAD) analysis of hexane and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) extracts of sex pheromone glands of calling females consistently detected four compounds eliciting EAG responses in male moth antennae. According to their GC retention times, mass spectra, and comparative EAG analyses with reference standards, these EAD-active compounds were identified as (Z)-9-tetradecenol (Z9-14:OH), (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate (Z5-14:Ac), (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate (Z7-14:Ac), and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), respectively. In the SPME extracts from the head-space of individual abdominal tips, Z9-14:Ac, Z5-14:Ac, Z7-14:Ac, and Z9:14 OH were detected in the ratio of 82:9:5:4. In EAG dose-response experiments, Z9-14:Ac was the strongest antennal stimulant at different doses tested. In field trapping experiments, Z9-14:Ac, Z7-14:Ac, and Z5-14:Ac proven to be essential for male attraction and a their 85:5:10 blend loaded onto green rubber septum dispensers was significantly more effective than single-, two-, and any other three-component blend of these compounds. The addition of Z9-14:OH to the optimal blend resulted in a significant reduction of male catches. The attractive blend here identified allowed for an effective and accurate monitoring of P. caestrum flight activity in southern Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present eight species in seven genera of the family Cossidae (Lepidoptera) from Korea, including one newly recorded species, Cossus siniaevi. Two females of C. siniaevi were collected in the middle part of Korea, and they were distinguished by the strongly elongate forewing with narrow wavy black streaks and a weakly grayish-white patch in the medial zone and at the apex. The female genitalia of C. siniaevi can be distinguished by the simple antrum simple with medially invaginated, the short and narrow ductus bursae, and the large pouch-shaped corpus bursae without a signum. We provided the diagnosis of each genus, including male and female genitalia, and the key to the species.

Mezcals are distilled Mexican alcoholic beverages consumed by many people across the globe. One of the most popular mezcals is tequila, but there are other forms of mezcal whose production has been part of Mexican culture since the 17th century. It was not until the 1940–50s when the mezcal worm, also known as the ‘‘tequila worm’’, was placed inside bottles of non-tequila mezcal before distribution. These bottled larvae increased public attention for mezcal, especially in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Despite these larvae gaining global interest, their identity has largely remained uncertain other than that they are larvae of one of three distantly related holometabolous insects. We sequenced the COI gene from larvae in different kinds of commercially available mezcals. All larval DNA that amplified was identified as the agave redworm moth, Comadia redtenbacheri. 17. Beyond the pest: Life history, ecology and ethnoentomology of the giant wood moth (Endoxyla cinereus).

The giant wood moth, Endoxyla cinereus (Tepper, 1890) (Cossidae: Zeuzerinae), is the heaviest known moth in the world and a traditional food resource to Indigenous Australians, but it is primarily understood as a pest. Research on its pest status has highlighted the different interactions this moth has with plants and animals, suggesting that it plays an important role in Australian ecosystems. Here, I review the literature on Endoxyla cinereus to compile and illustrate its life history and species‐specific ecological interactions for the first time. This life history is then applied to interpret the ecological role that this species plays in shaping forest communities, serving as a key food resource to other animals and creating habitat in the form of tree hollows. Based on this, the giant wood moth is an ecosystem engineer. The human impact of this species is then reviewed including indigenous use of E. cinereus and other Endoxyla spp., and the forestry pest status of these moths. Consideration of the moth's long, cryptic life history reveals the scientific knowledge possessed by Indigenous Australians on harvesting wood moth larvae, while future studies on earlier life stages and pest, identity may aid the development of sustainable pest management. Finally, the taxonomic status of Endoxyla cinereus is briefly discussed, as previous research suggests the presence of either cryptic or misidentified species. Future research on the giant wood moth may aid both natural and cultural conservation programmes and provide novel solutions for managing the species as a pest. 21. Additions to the Second Edition of the Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Russia: East Siberian Regions. Part 1.

Additions to the second edition of the Catalogue of the Lepidoptera of Russia are given in the present communication. They concern three East Siberian regions of the Russian Federation: Irkutsk Province, the Republic of Buryatia, and Zabaikalskii Territory. An annotated check-list includes 54 species of 6 families. The publications with records of these species from the area studied are cited. For Irkutsk Province, 20 species are listed, 16 of which are recorded for the first time. For the Republic of Buryatia, 35 species are given, 19 of which are recorded for the first time. For Zabaikalskii Territory, 10 species not recorded previously are reported. Eupithecia impolita Vojnits, 1980 is new to the Russian fauna. The distribution limits are expanded for 9 species: the new eastern limit of the distribution is established for 3 species of Noctuidae: Photedes captiuncula (Treitschke, 1825), Photedes fluxa (Hübner, 1809), and Noctua interposita (Hübner, 1790); the western border of the distribution range is shifted for Eogystia sibirica (Alphéraky, 1895), Scopula agutsaensis Vasilenko, 1997, Paragona multisignata (Christoph, 1881), Arytrura subfalcata (Ménétriés, 1859), Acronicta hercules R. Increasing demand for grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) worldwide makes it a high-value crop and also an important, valuable export commodity for India. In February 2016, a vineyard from Maharashtra, India was identified with entirely new insect damage symptoms from those observed earlier. After, further inspection, a new type of wood borer was noticed which was later identified as Dervishiya cadambae (Moore) (Lepidoptera Cossidae). D. cadambae is known as a major pest of Tectona grandis L.f. plantations in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states of India and causes extensive damage to the timber. Surveys were conducted in affected vineyards to assess the extent of infestation from 2016 to 2018. In 20 infested vineyards located in Sangli and Nashik districts of Maharashtra, 12-72% of grapevines were found to have active infestations. Young larvae fed under the bark and later instars bored inside and made galleries. D. cadambae caused extensive damage to the sapwood and heartwood of grapevine stem and reduced both vitality and productivity of the vines. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) barcode for this new pest of grapevines was also provided. The DNA barcode grouped D. cadambae in the clade of Cossidae samples supported with a bootstrap value of 85% in phylogenetic analysis. To our knowledge, this is the first record of D. cadambae occurrence on V. vinifera. A green muscardine fungus was isolated from the field infected larvae of D. cadambae. The pathogenicity test confirmed Koch's postulates. The fungus was identified as Metarhizium brunneum (Petch), which proved to be an efficient antagonist of this pest in laboratory bioassays. En una zona rural del municipio Cúcuta, al nororiente de Colombia, cerca de la frontera con Venezuela, plantaciones forestales de Terminalia ivorensis (amarillón) presentaron síntomas de perforaciones en el tallo, producidas por insectos. Aunque los árboles en general sobreviven, el daño afecta directamente la calidad de la madera y demerita su valor. Con el objetivo de diagnosticar este problema e identificar el, o los insectos involucrados, se trasladaron trozas de madera dañada al laboratorio de Diagnóstico Fitosanitario del Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario, sede Cúcuta, donde se colocaron en cámaras de cría, en las que emergieron adultos de tres especies. Los especímenes recuperados, se montaron, identificaron y se corroboró la identidad con taxónomos especialistas de los grupos correspondientes. Se registra por primera vez en plantaciones forestales de Terminalia ivorensis al lepidóptero Cossula arpi y los escarabajos Cotyclytus scenicus y Scolytopsis puncticollis como barrenadores del tallo. Este último, además es nuevo registro para Colombia. Se realizan comentarios acerca de la distribución, morfología y ecología de dichos taxa. Se espera que esta nueva información contribuya a dirigir acciones de monitoreo en otras regiones, donde, actualmente, hay plantaciones de amarillón y complementar los datos de la distribución temporal y espacial de esos insectos.

In herbivorous insects plant volatiles have an important role in locating mates and oviposition sites. The aim of this study was to test the antennal and behavioural responses of females of Isoceras sibirica Alpheraky (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) to the volatiles produced by Asparagus officinalis L. Electroantennographs (EAG) revealed that the antennae of I. sibirica respond in a dose dependent way to hexanal, limonene, 2-ethyl-2-hexenal, linalool and α-terpineol. In flight tunnel experiments, 2-ethyl-2-hexenal, α-terpineol, hexanal, ρ-cymene and geraniol were significantly more attractive to females of I. sibirica than other chemicals. These findings indicate that host volatiles are important for host recognition in I. sibirica.

Forewings relatively short with rounded apex; ground colour grayish; semitranslucent; edge of costa brownish-black 3/4 from the base, cell has a small white-ivory spot. Fringe brownish-black. Hindwings grayish semitranslucent, fringe brownish-black. White-ivory spots on submedian and apex area of forewings and submedian area and hind margin of hindwings Female (Fig. 3C, D). Antennae bipectinate, rami short, black, half length of the forewing. Head, tegula and thorax densely hirsute golden-brown dorsally and black ventrally. Abdomen hirsute; dorsally 3/5 of the abdomen golden-brown, with 4 black belts, terminal part 2/5 black. Forewings relatively short with rounded apex; ground colour grayish-black, semitranslucent; basal half ventrally blackish, golden-brown spots forming two incomplete fascia 2/5 and 3/5 from base, row of golden-brown smaller spots along termen; fringe brownish-black. Hindwing brownish-black semitranslucent except anal field golden-brown, fringe brownish-black. Wing venation is identical in both sexes. Male genitalia (Fig. 4A, B). Tegumen long and triangular; Uncus small, sclerotized, triangular peak shaped. Socii rounded with setae. Arms of gnathos relatively short, stout; gnathos knob large, oval shaped, membranous. Valvae lanceolate 8 times longer than width, apex roundish, basal half of costal margin convex, apical half concave, dorsal margin 2/3 from base slightly concave, apical part 1/6 membranous, basal part 7/8 sclerotized; margin between membranous and sclerotized parts clear and roundish, dorsally membranous reach end of sacculus. Sacculus clearly separated from valvae, slender, 2/3 length of valvae; base roundish, gradually narrowing towards the outer end. Arms of transtilla relatively short, thin, strongly sclerotized, 45-degree sharp angle in the middle; transtilla knob not well visible, membranous. Lateral juxta lobes digitate. Saccus well developed as long as width, apex rounded, anterior margin strongly sclerotized, slightly concave. Aedeagus gladiate, same length as valvae, without cornutus. Female genitalia (Fig. 4C, D). Ovipostor long. Papilliae analis elongated ellipsoid.Aphophyses posteriores twice longer than apophyses anteriores. Ostium bursae not visible, long lateral sclerotized structures beside ductus bursae; ductus bursae relatively short, posterior half membranous, anterior narrow. Corpus bursae thin, membranous. Diagnosis. Both male and female of D. versicolor sp. nov. wings pattern and colouration is very distinct from any other known species of genus Dieida or similar looking genus Stygioides Bruand, 1853, hence it can not be confused with any other species. Distribution. The holotype and paratype of D. versicolor sp. nov. originate from Okurcalar, Turkey. Biology. Like all of the other congeners, imago of D. versicolor sp. nov. is diurnal. No hostplants or immature stages are known. Etymology. Metarbelodes Strand, 1909 Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift Iris 22: 119 Type species: Metarbela ? umtaliana Aurivillius, 1901 (Entomologisk Tidskrift 22 (2): 127, Fig. 29), by monotypy. Diagnosis. Metarbelodes is considered monotypic at present. The male genitalia can be distinguished from other metarbelids by a long, hollow, well sclerotized, thorn-like process that originates at the costal margin and is bent strongly downwards towards the ventral edge of valva (autapomorphy). The base of the thorn-like process has a broad, long, open slit dorsally, with a weakly-sclerotized projection attached to it. The forewing has a strong, continuous, tubular CuP fold. Based on the latter, M. umtaliana is likely more closely related to Zambezia than to Lukeniana. Description. Head: Rough-scaled, with light ochre hair-like scales below compound eyes on fronto-clypeus in male; a pair of pits absent from lower fronto-clypeus, a pair of conical projections present on lower fronto-clypeus; pits behind labial palpi ovoid; labial palpi long, almost as long as eye diameter, consisting of three segments, 2 nd segment longest, 1.5–2.3 longer than the basal segment, 3 rd segment shortest, 0.5 length of basal segment; antenna bipectinate in male, branches narrow, 3.5 width of shaft, densely scaled cream; flagellum scaled, cream colored. Thorax: Densely covered with light ochre hair-like scales on patagia and tegulae, slightly glossy, tegulae not pronounced; crest on metathorax small, light ochre. Forelegs and midlegs ochre with long dense hair-like scales. Epiphyses absent. Hindlegs with one pair of narrow tibial spurs, slightly unequal in length (outer spur 1.4 mm, inner spur 1.3 mm); pretarsus with a pair of pulvilli. Forewing upperside with ground colour dark ochre mixed with cream, not glossy, with dark brown, sometimes almost black (= sepia) vertical striae along costa and on the outer half of the forewing upper side; a geometric design is absent (a geometric design was defined by Lehmann 2010b, e.g., the occurrence of any triangular-like or leaf-like patterns); a simple, not contrasting pattern is present and comprises a straight sepia terminal line, not parallel to termen, from near apex to dorsum, strongly bent towards base of wing at M 3; 1A+2A and discocellular vein sepia; CuA 2 is distinctly marked white or cream, narrow edged sepia above. Hindwing cream-coloured, glossy. Fringe long, cilia up to 1.5 mm, cream-coloured, glossy. Forewing venation (Fig. 1d; Fig. 9f) with 1A+2A long forked at base; CuP a strong, tube-like, continuous unsclerotized fold; basal part of CuA 2 originating from two-thirds of lower median; CuA 1 originating from hind margin of posterior cell , M 3 and M 2 originating from apical angle of posterior cell, both are separated at base; M 1 originating from anterior angle of median cell and close to base of a relatively large areole; R 5 originates from posterior angle of areole; R 4 +R 3 +R 2 on a long stalk that is originating from anterior angle of areole close to base of R 5; R 1 originating from anterior part of median cell; Sc more or less parallel to R 1. Hindwing—3A present; 1A+2A rudimentary; CuP present but weak; CuA 2 originating from two-thirds of lower median of posterior cell; CuA 1 originating from hind margin of posterior cell; M 3 and M 2 originating from apical angle of posterior cell, separated; M 1 +Rs originating from apical angle of anterior cell, long-stalked; a short bar present from Rs to Sc+R 1; a discocellular vein on both forewing and hindwing present. Retinaculum and frenulum absent. Abdomen: Externally primarily covered by cream and light ochre, hair-like scales; abdominal tuft cream, short, up to 0.25 length of abdomen. Male genitalia (Fig. 11c) with tegumen fused to vinculum, forming a firm ring. Uncus large, ovoid, comprised of a pair of narrowly rounded lobes, short setae ventrally, basal edge of uncus is not straight but has a crescent-shape in horizontal position at middle. Gnathos short, well above costa, covered with short toothlike processes at distal end, hand-shaped, not connected by a sclerotized band basally. Valva ovoid with broad base, costa lacking setae, inner side of median sector with few setae; large, setose, weakly-sclerotized projection attached to thorn-like process from near base of valva and along costal margin; thorn-like process prominent and hollow; at end of its base with long open slit dorsally where it is connected by a thin membrane to weakly-sclerotized projection; thorn-like process originating from outer side of valva near costa, and strongly bent downwards towards ventral edge of valva. Sacculus strongly reduced to one-third near base of valva. A short emargination (less than 25% length of valva) extending between weakly-sclerotized projection and thorn-like process. Transtilla absent; semi-transtilla short, rectangular with a somewhat leaf-shaped, attached to costa of valva and opposite of vinculum, without setae. Juxta nearly twice as large as saccus with two acuminate tips and a short process at each tip, deeply emargination between tips (90% the length of juxta). Vinculum broad at saccus, twice as large as the saccus, forming a plate-like structure. Saccus digitate, gently rounded caudally. Phallus simple, 1.5 longer than basal width of valva, slightly trumpet-shaped, bilobate, with a cleft at each end. Female postabdominal structure and genitalia unknown. Species richness. Panau tanimbari sp.nov. (Figs 5−6) Holotype. Male, with labels: “Tenimber / Sunda Ins.”, “Stauding. u. Bang-Haas / Dresden, Ankauf 1961”, “Dresden / Coss 2”, “HOLOTYPUS / Panau tanimbari / Yakovlev & Hulsbosch, 2023 / Yakovlev & Hulsbosch des., 2022” (SNSD). Paratype. 1 male, with same locality and date as for holotype (SNSD). Description. Male. Length of forewing: 24 mm in holotype, 23 mm in paratype. Antenna short, about one-third of forewing in length; basal half of antenna bipectinate, with long setae (2.5−3.0 times as long as diameter of antenna stem); distal half of antenna unipectinate, with very short setae. Tegulae and patagia densely covered with light grey scales. Abdomen basally light grey, in other parts light brown, with light grey spots on dorsal surface. Forewing grey-brown; long light brown stroke from wing base to postdiscal area between veins of cubital stem; light brown stroke in medial area postdiscally; thin undulated longitudinal lines between veins of medial and cubital stems postdiscally; poorly expressed grey reticulated pattern submarginally; fringe dark at veins, light between veins. Hind wing grey-brown, without pattern; fringe dark at veins, light between veins. Male genitalia. Uncus long, with acute beak-like apex, apical third noticeably thickened and deep longitudinal notch on lower surface. Gnathos arms thin, long, belt-like, not fused. Valve long, leaf-like, slightly curved along length, slightly narrowing to apex; outer margin semicircular; costal margin slightly curved; abdominal margin with small notch in proximal third. Juxta saddle-like, robust, with a pair of long leaf-like lateral processes. Saccus small, conical, apically acute. Phallus thick, with longitudinal folding on all surface; lateral surface of vesica with large finger-shaped cornutus almost equal to phallus in length. Female unknown. Comparison. Externally, P. tanimbari sp. nov. is close to P. variegatum, from which it differs in the less expressed light brown pattern on the forewing, thick distal third of the uncus, and less expressed notch on the abdominal margin of the valve in the proximal third. Description of male genitalia. Uncus long, with acute beak-like apex and deep longitudinal notch on lower surface. Gnathos arms thin, short, belt-like, not fused. Valve long, leaf-like, poorly narrowing to apex; outer margin semicircular; costal margin slightly curved, almost smooth; abdominal margin with deep semicircular notch in proximal third. Juxta saddle-like, robust, with a pair of long leaf-like lateral processes. Saccus small, conical, apically semicircular. Phallus thick, with longitudinal folding along all surface; lateral surface of vesica with large finger-shaped cornutus being slightly smaller than phallus. Comparison. Externally, the species is close to P. tanimbari sp. nov., from which it differs in the more expressed light brown pattern on the forewing, uniform thickness of the uncus and more expressed notch on the abdominal margin of the valve in the proximal third. Remarks. Female is unknown. One of the paratypes, kept in NHMUK, was collected in New Guinea without indicating the exact location on the label (Roepke, 1957: 29). Nicolai barangay (= district; not located)], 150 m, 12°20′N 121°12′E, 8 Jan. 2005, J.H. Lourens (MWM). Description. Male. Length of forewing: 25.0 mm in holotype, 24.0− 26.5 mm in paratypes. Antenna short, about one-fourth of forewing in length; two-thirds of antenna (basal and middle parts) bipectinate, with long setae (2.5−3.0 times as long as diameter of antenna stem); distal part of antenna unipectinate, with very short setae. Tegulae and patagia densely covered with light grey scales. Abdomen basally light grey, in other parts light brown. Forewing brown; two bright black wide strokes between veins of radial stem postdiscally; thin grey transverse strokes discally; undulated grey strokes postdiscally and submarginally; light brown portion in area of cubital stem discally; fringe dark at veins, light between veins. Hind wing brown, without pattern; fringe dark at veins, light between veins. Male genitalia. Uncus long, with acute beak-like apex and deep longitudinal notch on lower surface. Gnathos arms thin, long, belt-like, not fused. Valve long, leaf-like, slightly curved along all length, slightly narrowing to apex; outer margin semicircular; costal margin slightly curved; abdominal margin with two small notches in proximal and middle thirds. Juxta saddle-like, robust, with a pair of long leaf-like lateral processes. Saccus small, conical, apically acute. Phallus thick, with longitudinal folding along all surface; lateral surface of vesica with large finger-shaped cornutus being twice as small as phallus. Female unknown. Comparison. Externally, P. lourensi sp. nov. clearly differs from two other species considered in this article, in the dark pattern with poorly expressed light brown elements and in two small notches on the abdominal margin of the valve in the proximal and middle thirds. Etymology. The new species is named in honour of the collector, J.H.M. Lourens. Dr Johannes H.M. Lourens has made a significant contribution to the study and conservation of Lepidoptera in the Philippines, as well as to the promotion of knowledge about Lepidoptera in this region. Distribution. Abstract: Streltzoviella insularis (Staudinger) is an important tree‐boring pest, that primarily damages Sophora japonica (Linnaeus) and Ginkgo biloba (Linnaeus), as well as other common species, at great economic cost to the urban landscape construction industry in China. In the present study, the alimentary canal morphology of S. insularis was observed using light microscopy, and its ultrastructure was investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The foregut of S. insularis can be divided into the pharynx, esophagus, crop, proventriculus, and cardiac valve. The well‐developed crop forms the longest section of the foregut. It is able to store large amounts of food and is lined with a monolayer of epithelial cells. Many sclerotized microspines occur on the surface of the anterior intima and there are dense spines on the posterior intima of the proventriculus. Epithelial cells of the midgut include columnar cells, goblet cells, and regenerative cells, but endocrine cells are absent. The hindgut consists of the pyloric valve, ileum, and rectum. There is no clear distinction between the ileum and colon. The intima surface of the pyloric valve carries many microspines, whereas the intestinal wall of the rectum is thin with well‐developed rectal pads. The rectal epithelial cells form a squamous monolayer. A cryptonephric excretory system is located in the hindgut. There are six spiral Malpighian tubules, in which a cellular layer on a basement membrane encloses a lumen. These results will provide the basis for further studies of the structure and function in S. insularis larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mitogenomes are useful markers for phylogenetic studies across a range of taxonomic levels. Here, we focus on mitogenome variation across the tortricid moth genus Choristoneura and particularly the spruce budworm ( Choristoneura fumiferana ) species complex, a notorious pest group of North American conifer forests. Phylogenetic relationships of Tortricidae, representing two subfamilies, four tribes and nine genera, were analyzed using 21 mitogenomes. These included six newly-sequenced mitogenomes for species in the spruce budworm complex plus three additional Choristoneura species and 12 previously published mitogenomes from other tortricids and one from the Cossidae. We evaluated the phylogenetic informativeness of the mitogenomes and reconstructed a time-calibrated tree with fossil and secondary calibrations. We found that tortricid mitogenomes had conserved protein and ribosomal regions, and analysis of all protein-coding plus ribosomal genes together provided an efficient marker at any taxonomic rank. The time-calibrated phylogeny showed evolutionary convergence of conifer feeding within Choristoneura , with two independent lineages, the Nearctic spruce budworm complex and the Palearctic species Choristoneura murinana , both shifting onto conifers about 11 million years ago from angiosperms. These two host-plant shifts both occurred after the formation of boreal forest in the late Miocene. Haplotype diversification within the spruce budworm complex occurred in the last 4 million years, and is probably linked to the initial cooling cycles of the Northern Hemisphere in the Pliocene. A taxonomic revision of the Iranian species of the family Cossidae is conducted. Sixthy-nine species and 16 subspecies in 26 genera and five subfamilies, namely Catoptinae, Mehariinae, Stygiinae, Cossinae and Zeuzerinae, are identified. Meharia baluchestana Alipanah & Yakovlev, sp. n. and Cossulus kopetdaghensis Yakovlev & Alipanah, sp. n. are described. Dyspessa elbursensis derbenti Daniel, 1964 is raised to the species level, Dyspessa derbenti Daniel, 1964, stat. n.; Dieida ledereri (Staudinger, 1817) is considered as the senior synonym of D. persa Strand in Stichel, 1911, syn. n.; Cossus coccus araraticus Teich, 1896 is considered as a senior synonym of C. c. armeniaca Rothschild, 1912, syn. n.; C c. kossai Wiltshire, 1957 as a senior synonym of C. c. omrana Wiltshire, 1957, syn. n.; and Deserticossus arenicola iranica (Austaut, 1897), syn. n. and D. arenicola transcaucasicus (Zukowsky, 1936), syn. n. are newly synonymized with D. arenicola arenicola (Staudinger, 1879). Additionally, the genus Mormogystia Schoorl, 1990, and 15 species, namely Dyspessa alpherakyi (Christoph in Romanoff, 1885), D. artemis Yakovlev, 2008, D. blonda Yakovlev, 2008, D. stroehlei Yakovlev, 2008, D. tsvetaevi Yakovlev, 2008, Barchaniella inspersa (Christoph, 1887), B. sacara (Grum-Grshimailo, 1902), Cossulus intractatus (Staudinger, 1887), C. mollis (Christoph, 1887), C. stertzi (Püngeler, 1899), Deserticossus campicola (Eversmann, 1854), Kotchevnik durelli Yakovlev, 2004, Mormogystia reibellii (Oberthür, 1876), Eremocossus erebuni Yakovlev, 2008 and Phragmataecia turkmenbashi Yakovlev, 2008 are newly reported for the fauna of Iran. Moreover, the hitherto unknown female of Kotchevnik durelli is described. Additional data of the species previously reported from Iran is provided and the collecting data maps of the entire studied species are presented.

Facilitation is an ecological interaction in which the presence of one species (e.g., ecosystem engineers) alters the environment in a way that enhances growth, survival or reproduction of a neighboring species. Wood-boring insects are considered facilitators for cavities-nesting ants, which experience intense intra and interspecific competition for these sites. But how do ants find these cavities? Here, we suggest that ants could be attracted by chemical/odorous cues emitted by the frass of wood-boring insects. Using captive colonies of Cephalotes pusillus (Klug 1824) in controlled conditions, we carried out a bioassay to test the following hypotheses: (i) the frass from beetles are more attractive to ants than those from caterpillars (Cossidae: Lepidoptera), since boring beetles are more common and produce more cavities for ant nest on the studied plant, Caryocar brasiliensis (Caryocaraceae). If this first hypothesis is true, (ii) in relation to the cavity substrate type, the insect frass will be an attraction for workers from captive colonies (colonies, hereafter): both from compromised colonies (colonies without nest and in vulnerable condition) and intact colonies in tubes and (iii) and workers from compromised colonies colonize tubes with frass more quickly than those from intact colonies. The three hypotheses were confirmed, and Cephalotes pusillus ants prefer beetle frass, moving more quickly (five times faster) into tubes with frass when in vulnerable conditions. Our findings revealed that frass from beetles is a trigger to workers of C. pusillus locate and then nesting on branches of C. brasiliensis in Brazilian Cerrado. We suggest that the selection for a nesting cavity by arboreal ants is not random, but guided by chemical/odorous cues.
