Abstract

This article is concerned with the possibility that syntactic structure may feature “small stuff” not just at the very top of the clause, but also lower down, in the domain that would usually be regarded as the lexical domain. The analysis is based on a range of (dialectal) Dutch and Frisian data, suggesting an initial analysis for the relevant morphosyntactic facts in terms of which a “smaller” higher category - what superficially looks like the definite and indefinite article in the relevant systems - seems to be located at the bottom of a nominal structure.

Abstract

A theoretical account of specific language impairment (SLI) – one which places the locus of the impairment at Spell-Out at the syntax-phonology interface – is proposed and then tested against utterances from Afrikaans-speaking children with SLI. Drawing on Minimalism, our account offers a unified explanation for the seemingly diverse phenomena found in the Afrikaans data: omission of certain lexical material, double articulation of other lexical material and word order deviations. Based on our data, we conclude that the language problem of children with SLI appears to lie neither in the mapping from lexicon to syntax (thus in the selection of a lexical item as a member of the numeration) nor in the computational system, but in the mapping of an adult-like syntactic representation onto a proper sound representation.

The Syntax of Dutch aims at presenting a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of Dutch. It is primarily concerned with language description and not with linguistic theory, and provides support to all researchers interested in matters relating to the syntax of Dutch, including advanced students of language and linguistics. Syntax of Dutch: Verbs and Verb Phrases consists of three volumes. Volume 1 opens with a general introduction to verbs, including a review of various verb classifications and discussions on inflection, tense, mood, modality and aspect. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of complementation (argument structure and verb frame alternations). The multi-volume work Syntax of Dutch presents a synthesis of current thinking on Dutch syntax. The text of the seven already available volumes was written between 1995 and 2015 and issued in print between 2012 and 2016. The various volumes are primarily concerned with the description of the Dutch language and, only where this is relevant, with linguistic theory. They will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students of languages and linguistics interested in the Dutch language. This volume is the final one of the series and addresses issues relating to coordination. It contains three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the syntactic and semantic properties of coordinate structures and their constituting elements, that is, the coordinators and the coordinands they link. Chapter 2 discusses the types of ellipsis known as conjunction reduction and gapping found in coordinate structures. Chapter 3 discusses elements seemingly exhibiting coordination-like properties, such as 'dan' (than) in comparative constructions like 'Jan is groter dan zij' ( Jan is taller than she).

Abstract

This paper presents a qualitative analysis of a construction that has not been studied extensively yet, namely the Dutch beter-construction, as in Beter ga je bij Starbucks koffie halen, ‘You better get yourself a coffee at Starbucks’. The paper gives a detailed description of the syntactic structure and the pragmatics of the construction. We argue that the sentence-initial adverb beter in the beter-construction differs, in both meaning and distributional characteristics, from the comparative adverb beter. By conducting three tests based on Broekhuis & Corver (2016), we show that it functions as a clause adverb in contrast to comparative beter, which functions as a VP-adverb. Moreover, we show that the adverb beter in the beter-construction shares important properties with modal and subjective adverbs. Adopting the generative-linguistic approach to clausal structure, we further propose that modal beter is a phrase that undergoes movement from a sentence-internal modifier position to the clause-initial position.

Abstract

This article examines parasitic agreement in Dutch, that is, the appearance of an inflection whose existence is dependent on the presence of a "real" inflection. Specifically, an intensifying degree word (optionally) carries an inflection that is associated with a gradable attributive adjective. The article lays bare various properties of, and constraints on, the phenomenon of parasitic agreement. An important conclusion that follows from the analysis of parasitic agreement is that this phenomenon is structure dependent, just like the parasitic gap phenomenon. The structural configuration that is claimed to be at the basis of parasitic agreement is the Spec-head relationship.

Abstract

In deze scriptie onderzoek ik de stand van zaken wat betreft het onderwijs in het Fries: wat gaat er veertig jaar na de invoering van het schoolvak goed, waar lopen de Friezen nog altijd tegenaan? Ik onderzoek welke ambities ten grondslag liggen aan het schoolvak Fries, en in hoeverre die behaald worden. Uit de resultaten voor het Fries distilleer ik een aantal adviezen voor degenen die op het moment van schrijven het onderwijs in het Nedersaksisch aan het vormgeven zijn. Het begrip meertaligheid loopt als een rode draad door de scriptie, expliciet dan wel impliciet. Mijn informatie voor het Fries haal ik uit wettelijke kaders, de belangrijkste beleidsstukken, een rapportage over het gevoerde beleid en rapporten van adviesorgaan DingTiid en de Inspectie van het Onderwijs. Ik kijk daarbij naar de huidige stand van zaken en naar de ambities voor de toekomst. Samenvattend concludeer ik dat het ondanks de ruime ervaring niet goed gaat met de Friese taal in het onderwijs. Door gebrek aan tijd en bevoegde docenten, door verwachtingen die niet goed zijn afgestemd op de praktijk maar vooral door gebrek aan samenwerking, gedeeld leiderschap en visie en maatschappelijk draagvlak blijkt het Friese onderwijs voor een uitdaging te staan: de positie van het Fries is niet zo sterk als gehoopt. De oplossingen voor die uitdaging worden gezien in betere samenwerking op en tussen alle niveaus. Intussen is men in het Nedersaksische taalgebied juist bezig om initiatieven voor Nedersaksisch onderwijs op te zetten omdat er draagvlak voor is en vraag naar is. De toenemende aandacht voor de meertaligheidsvisie, die zich uit in onder andere de drietalige scholen, blijkt een van de belangrijkste positieve ontwikkelingen die kansen meebrengt voor zowel het Fries als het Nedersaksisch.
