Abstract

Using astrometric observations spanning more than a century and including a large set of Cassini data, we determine Saturn's tidal parameters through their current effects on the orbits of the eight main and four coorbital moons. We have used the latter to make the first determination of Saturn's Love number, $k_2=0.390 \pm 0.024$, a value larger than the commonly used theoretical value of 0.341 (Gavrilov & Zharkov, 1977), but compatible with more recent models (Helled & Guillot, 2013) for which $k_2$ ranges from 0.355 to 0.382. Depending on the assumed spin for Saturn's interior, the new constraint can lead to a reduction of up to 80% in the number of potential models, offering great opportunities to probe the planet's interior. In addition, significant tidal dissipation within Saturn is confirmed (Lainey et al., 2012) corresponding to a high present-day tidal ratio $k_2/Q=(1.59 \pm 0.74) \times 10^{-4}$ and implying fast orbital expansions of the moons. This high dissipation, with no obvious variations for tidal frequencies corresponding to those of Enceladus and Dione, may be explained by viscous friction in a solid core, implying a core viscosity typically ranging between $10^{14}$ and $10^{16}$ Pa.s (Remus et al., 2012). However, a dissipation increase by one order of magnitude at Rhea's frequency could suggest the existence of an additional, frequency-dependent, dissipation process, possibly from turbulent friction acting on tidal waves in the fluid envelope of Saturn (Ogilvie & Li, 2004). Alternatively, a few of Saturn's moons might themselves experience large tidal dissipation.

6. A Survey of Low-Velocity Collisional Features in Saturn's F Ring

Abstract

Small (~50km scale), irregular features seen in Cassini images to be emanating from Saturn's F ring have been termed mini-jets by Attree et al. (2012). One particular mini-jet was tracked over half an orbital period, revealing its evolution with time and suggesting a collision with a local moonlet as its origin. In addition to these data we present here a much more detailed analysis of the full catalogue of over 800 F ring mini-jets, examining their distribution, morphology and lifetimes in order to place constraints on the underlying moonlet population. We find mini-jets randomly located in longitude around the ring, with little correlation to the moon Prometheus, and randomly distributed in time, over the full Cassini tour to date. They have a tendency to cluster together, forming complicated `multiple' structures, and have typical lifetimes of ~1d. Repeated observations of some features show significant evolution, including the creation of new mini-jets, implying repeated collisions by the same object. This suggests a population of <~1km radius objects with some internal strength and orbits spread over 100km in semi-major axis relative to the F ring but with the majority within 20km. These objects likely formed in the ring under, and were subsequently scattered onto differing orbits by, the perturbing action of Prometheus. This reinforces the idea of the F ring as a region with a complex balance between collisions, disruption and accretion., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in Icarus. Abstract

We report the discovery of several large "propeller" moons in the outer part of Saturn's A ring, objects large enough to be followed over the 5-year duration of the Cassini mission. These are the first objects ever discovered that can be tracked as individual moons, but do not orbit in empty space. We infer sizes up to 1--2 km for the unseen moonlets at the center of the propeller-shaped structures, though many structural and photometric properties of propeller structures remain unclear. Finally, we demonstrate that some propellers undergo sustained non-keplerian orbit motion. Abstract Background Clinically useful treatment moderators of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) have not yet been identified, though some baseline predictors of treatment outcome have been proposed. The aim of iSPOT-D is to identify pretreatment measures that predict or moderate MDD treatment response or remission to escitalopram, sertraline or venlafaxine; and develop a model that incorporates multiple predictors and moderators. Methods/Design The International Study to Predict Optimized Treatment - in Depression (iSPOT-D) is a multi-centre, international, randomized, prospective, open-label trial. It is enrolling 2016 MDD outpatients (ages 18-65) from primary or specialty care practices (672 per treatment arm; 672 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy controls). Study-eligible patients are antidepressant medication (ADM) naïve or willing to undergo a one-week wash-out of any non-protocol ADM, and cannot have had an inadequate response to protocol ADM. Baseline assessments include symptoms; distress; daily function; cognitive performance; electroencephalogram and event-related potentials; heart rate and genetic measures. A subset of these baseline assessments are repeated after eight weeks of treatment. Outcomes include the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (primary) and self-reported depressive symptoms, social functioning, quality of life, emotional regulation, and side-effect burden (secondary). Participants may then enter a naturalistic telephone follow-up at weeks 12, 16, 24 and 52. The first half of the sample will be used to identify potential predictors and moderators, and the second half to replicate and confirm. Discussion First enrolment was in December 2008, and is ongoing. iSPOT-D evaluates clinical and biological predictors of treatment response in the largest known sample of MDD collected worldwide. Abstract

Genome-wide association studies have been tremendously successful in identifying genetic variants associated with complex diseases. The majority of association signals are intergenic and evidence is accumulating that a high proportion of signals lie in enhancer regions. We use Capture Hi-C to investigate, for the first time, the interactions between associated variants for four autoimmune diseases and their functional targets in B- and T-cell lines. Here we report numerous looping interactions and provide evidence that only a minority of interactions are common to both B- and T-cell lines, suggesting interactions may be highly cell-type specific; some disease-associated SNPs do not interact with the nearest gene but with more compelling candidate genes (for example, FOXO1, AZI2) often situated several megabases away; and finally, regions associated with different autoimmune diseases interact with each other and the same promoter suggesting common autoimmune gene targets (for example, PTPRC, DEXI and ZFP36L1)., There is evidence that a proportion of the polymorphisms identified by genome-wide association studies lie in enchancer regions. Here the authors use Capture Hi-C to investigate the interaction with targets in autoimmune disease, showing interactions can be long range and cell-type specific.

23. At Death's Door: A Scene of Damnatio ad Bestiason a Key Handle from Leicester

Abstract

ABSTRACTA decorated copper-alloy key handle was recovered during excavation of a town house in Roman Leicester (Ratae Corieltavorum). The decoration comprises two groups of figures modelled in high relief: a bearded, unarmed man fighting with a lion, arranged above four naked male youths embracing one another in a protective manner. This decoration cannot be paralleled among other similarly elaborate Roman key handles and is best interpreted as a scene of damnatio ad bestias, although it does not directly replicate other known scenes of this punishment and spectacle. Other readings of the image are possible, depending on the context and perspective of the viewer as they handled the object.

Abstract

International audience; Astrometry is the discipline that aims to provide positions of celestial objects in space with the highest accuracy. Thanks to recent space missions like Mars Express and Cassini, astrometric measurements of moons have allowed the probing of the gravity environment of their systems with unprecedented resolution. Here we focus on the possible determination of physical librations on the rotation of the moons, by modelling their effects on the moons' orbits. Assuming a homogeneous density, a theoretical expectation of the main libration can be computed and compared with possible observed values obtained indirectly from the orbit. In this work, we obtain for Phobos a physical libration of 1.04 /- 0.02 degrees, in agreement with a homogeneous interior. The case of some of the inner moons of Saturn will be addressed, also.

Abstract

Defective immune homeostasis in the balance between FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) and effector T cells is a likely contributing factor in the loss of self-tolerance observed in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Given the importance of interleukin-2 (IL-2) signaling in the generation and function of Tregs, observations that polymorphisms in genes in the IL-2 pathway associate with T1D and that some individuals with T1D exhibit reduced IL-2 signaling indicate that impairment of this pathway may play a role in Treg dysfunction and the pathogenesis of T1D. Here, we have examined IL-2 sensitivity in CD4+ T-cell subsets in 70 individuals with long-standing T1D, allowing us to investigate the effect of low IL-2 sensitivity on Treg frequency and function. IL-2 responsiveness, measured by STAT5a phosphorylation, was a very stable phenotype within individuals but exhibited considerable interindividual variation and was influenced by T1D-associated PTPN2 gene polymorphisms. Tregs from individuals with lower IL-2 signaling were reduced in frequency, were less able to maintain expression of FOXP3 under limiting concentrations of IL-2, and displayed reduced suppressor function. These results suggest that reduced IL-2 signaling may be used to identify patients with the highest Treg dysfunction and who may benefit most from IL-2 immunotherapy.

International audience; We revisit in detail the dynamics of Atlas. From a fit to new Cassini ISS astrometric observations spanning February 2004 to August 2013, we estimate GM_Atlas=0.384 /-0.001 x 10^(-3)km^3s^(-2), a value 13% smaller than the previously published estimate but with an order of magnitude reduction in the uncertainty. Our numerically-derived orbit shows that Atlas is currently librating in both a 54:53 corotation eccentricity resonance (CER) and a 54:53 Lindblad eccentricity resonance (LER) with Prometheus. We demonstrate that the orbit of Atlas is chaotic, with a Lyapunov time of order 10 years, as a direct consequence of the coupled resonant interaction (CER/LER) with Prometheus. The interactions between the two resonances is investigated using the CoraLin analytical model (El Moutamid et al., 2014), showing that the chaotic zone fills almost all the corotation site occupied by the satellite's orbit. Four 70 :67 apse-type mean motion resonances with Pandora are also overlapping, but these resonances have a much weaker effect on Atlas.We estimate the capture probabilities of Atlas into resonances with Prometheus as the orbits expand through tidal effects, and discuss the implications for the orbital evolution.

Abstract

International audience; The origin and evolution of the Saturnian satellites is still debated. While the canonical formation model creates many main moons in Saturn's subnebulae, a new model suggests a possible formation at the outer edge of a past massive ring (Charnoz et al. 2011). Furthermore, many interior structure models were suggested for Enceladus in order to explain the geysers observed in its South polar region. For instance, Nimmo and Pappalardo (2006) suggest the existence of a low density anomaly in the ice crust, and Collins and Goodman (2007) explain these geysers by an internal local "sea" with higher density than the ice crust. It is also noteworthy that in the model of Charnoz et al. (2011), the core of the satellites is not necessarily symmetric, due to the accretion of icy material onto large silicate chunks (> 10 - 100 Km). All these previous models may result in a shift between the center of mass and the center of figure of the satellites. We used the astrometry of Cassini ISS NAC images of Mimas and Enceladus to attempt to quantify such a shift considering, on one hand, the satellite's observed position as the center of figure and, on the other hand, its predicted position from the orbital ephemeris as the center of mass. In studying such a shift, we may add new constraints to the existing models and possibly discriminate between the various interior and formation models of the Saturnian system.

Program available at: http://www.imcce.fr/hosted_sites/naroo/program.html; International audience; The Cassini group within the Astronomy Unit at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) has been using the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) of the Cassini Spacecraft to make astrometric observations of the inner satellites and F ring of Saturn since 2004. Further observations are planned until the end of the mission in 2017. Here we summarize this work and describe how the astrometric data is stored in such a way that information from the GAIA catalogue can easily be used to reprocess the data without access to the images.

The Derbyshire Archaeological Journal, 128, 40-52, An archaeological evaluation, undertaken in advance of housing development at the former Bristol Street Motors on Alfreton Road, Little Chester, detected evidence for the Roman period extramural settlement relating to the adjacent fort. A mid-first-century ditch, together with second-century features containing charcoal and daub, probably deriving from the destruction of timber structures, were recorded and probably relate specifically to the rear of plots fronting onto the north side of the Old Chester Road.
