Reports on a survey of the perceptions of 71 2-year college faculty teaching off-campus credit courses. Though confronted with unusual schedules, facilities, and support services, 83 percent reported students learned as much or more than they would on campus. Results were similar for faculty teaching off-campus courses at other types of institutions. (DMM)

3. Computer Use in Outreach Courses.

Abstract

The data for this paper are drawn from a study of faculty perceptions about courses that are taught in locations away from a college campus, often called outreach, such as military installations, community centers, or business locations. Computer use in such settings presents difficulties in providing logistical support. Faculty were asked about computer availability and whether this affected student learning. Computer use in outreach courses, about 28%, is lower than a conservative predicted rate of 33%. The availability of computers apparently does not affect the faculty perception of student learning. The trend of the data does indicate a substantial increase in the use of computers in outreach courses. (3 references) (Author/DB)

8. A twenty-year comparison regarding campus attitudes toward collective bargaining.

Abstract

A national sample of college personnel administrators, top administrators, and non-academic employees was conducted in 1972-73 and partially repeated in 1992-93 to discern if any differences in attitudes regarding collective bargaining had taken place. There were three primary content questions taken from the 70s survey and used for the 90s survey. The first requested a rating of procedures used for setting guidelines, rules, and terms of employment. Results showed a mean of 2.2 for both surveys (better than fair but below good). The second question requested an assessment of the negotiation process for terms of employment. The mean shifted (toward participation) from 2.3 ('70s) to 2.8 ('90s). The third question requested assessment of the campus attitude or climate regarding collective bargaining. Attitudes shifted away from strong anti-bargaining especially when ratings for procedures improved. Participative management appears to be a strong concept influencing collective bargaining attitudes.
