In certain cases, heroic masculinity can be manifested when characters embrace their valor, courage, and physical prowess for the greater good while eschewing the potentially toxic elements of their personalities and powers. In Ryan Coogler’s 2018 film Black Panther, the dichotomy of toxic masculinity and heroic masculinity plays out through a series of ritual combats. This article explores Black Panther against the theoretical terrain of Afrofuturism, revealing hope for new imaginations of being and caution against the over-celebration of the binary switch in representation as forms of capital and patriarchy linger in the new fabric of Afrofuturistic imaginings (Davis 2017, Bennet 2016, Callier 2018, Dery 1994, English & Kim 2013, Womack 2013). The article takes a scoping approach attempting to map the terrain of literature around Coogler’s Black Panther. It also attempts to put in dialogue political economy and the text as a precursor to audience reception. The article takes up the problematics of Afrofuturism through literature around Black Panther and the political economy around production. A brief history of the conception and making of the film is pursued to suggest its coming of age as a result of the rise of Black Twitter and the global #BlackLivesMatter movement, while exploring the murkier aspects of bots influencing debate on these forums and the backlash on twitter itself. The article concludes reiterating the complexity of Afrofuturism as it looks to a utopian future. This scoping approach attempts to reveal the lacuna with regard to reception analyses of Black Panther. It is envisaged that a reception analysis performed against the backdrop of production and text could contribute to advancing current Afrofuturistic imaginings even as they are bound up in the problematic political economy of the present. The film centres on the new all-female leadership of the fictional African monarchy as it grapples with an emergent threat from Namor, the centuries-old ruler of an undersea Mesoamerican kingdom known as Talokan. Employing an assessment of the absent presence of the Anthropocene in the text, this article interrogates the popular, political, and planetary geographies of the expanding BP universe, focusing on what is screened in WF and what is left unscreened (obscene). In terms of the former, the article complicates the potential-if-unrealised geopolitical condominium between black and brown superpowers against the (neo)imperial white/surface world. Regarding the latter, it examines director Ryan Coogler's retro-active change in continuity which denudes Namor of his ecological activism and his burden of care for the oceans and the innumerable lifeforms contained therein. While anthropogenic climate change, rampant oceanic pollution, and humanity's geological agency stalk the filmic narrative, these hyperobjects are conspicuously missing from the diegesis, thus indicating the unwillingness and/or inability of Disney – qua the consummate American global conglomerate – to make a case for environmentalism in the face of cascading planetary crises. Mass media representations of morality and criminality rely on this principle too. To construct the Wakandan moral identity, the film creates a criminalised non- Wakandan narrative that primarily relies on (dis)ability and futuristic prosthetic devices. A comparison between the characterisation of two white male characters, Ulysses Klaue and Everett Kenneth Ross, is presented in order to highlight their relationship to disability and its representation as a criminalised non-Wakandan concept. Klaue's prosthetic arm is framed to represent greed, theft, punishment, and death. The article further considers how the film explores the intersection between disability, gender, and class. Nakia's and Shuri's relationships to Ross is juxtaposed with Linda's relationship to Klaue in order to illustrate how the film constructs disability as a question of class and nationality. The article concludes by drawing lessons from Black Panther that can be used by film makers and media content producers alike. The climax of the film Black Panther (directed by Ryan Coogler, 2018) shows the two heirs claiming the Black Panther's mantle battling it out in a tunnel that is modernity's dark hull. My article teases out the complex relationship between the film's doubled Black Panthers as a hall of mirrors, where the African American filmmaker and the assembled African and Afro-diasporic cast confront each other, their collective memories of slavery, and the complex relationship of those on the African continent to those memories. What in the structure of cinema might take us out of this hall of mirrors to a futurity beyond trauma? In answer, I offer a reading of Wakanda as "Alegropolis": a lavish and loving cinematic creation that draws on Afro-Futurist play with temporality and technology to reinscribe this circum-Atlantic history within a planetary frame. An affiliative afro-modernity is generated thereby, which invites a global audience to share the film's ethical and emotional concerns as what Michael Rothberg calls "implicated subjects." In this article, I explore the mythic patterns in the movie by reading it alongside Soyinka's densely mythic essay, "The Fourth Stage," in order to pry the movie open for analysis. I posit that reading Ryan Coogler's Black Panther side-by-side Soyinka's "The Fourth Stage" amplifies the dialogic tension between violence and justice in both works, on the one hand, and exposes the strategies by which female subjectivity is reimagined in Black Panther's radical universe, on the other hand. The article addresses two aspects of postcolonial critique in Black Panther: first, its portrayal of the allure of grand statements in the cultivation of conspicuous and persistent self-regard in societies that wish to be recognizably independent, and second the centrality of repeatedly embodied material gestures and motions for the sustenance of enduring communal self-regard.
