There is a long-standing polemic that the 'moment' of eucharistic consecration for the West is the words of institution and for the East is the epiclesis. Zheltov and Mckenna have previously analysed this issue with respect to the Byzantine rite; however, there is still a need for analysis of the Coptic rite. This paper examines the liturgical, patristic, and medieval sources to provide a survey of understandings of the epiclesis and consecration within the Egyptian liturgical heritage. The liturgical sources utilized include the early Egyptian anaphoras, as well as those utilized in the Coptic rite today—Egyptian Liturgy of St Basil the Great, Anaphora of St Gregory the Theologian, and Anaphora of St Cyril of Alexandria. The paper will show that there is diversity of thought regarding eucharistic consecration within the Egyptian tradition; yet, while accents on moment and process are both present, consecration as a process appears to be the dominant understanding. Dylan Thomas's poetry can be seen both as minor Welsh literature and world literature. Drawing on Bourdieu's concepts of field and capital, this article explores the mechanism of translation selection and consecration of Thomas's poetry in China by using his poetry published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press as an illustrative case study. In so doing, it is argued that the integrated forms of linguistic, economic, and symbolic capital associated with Thomas's poetry, along with the expiration of its copyright, prompted the publisher to select his poetry for translation to maintain its own dominant position in the Chinese publishing field. The publisher, translator, and other agents have consecrated Thomas's poetry as world literature in China. This article expands research on inter-peripheral translation flows and 'sociologies of poetry translation' and advances interdisciplinary studies of translation and world literature. Bourdieu (et al.'s) Photography contends that it is the fate of photography to remain for ever 'a middlebrow art'. This is partly because its technological character is held to be inimical to canonisation as a high art-form, but also because it lacks a class willing to invest time in its reception. Here, I argue, Bourdieu has been proved wrong: photography has now been consecrated, including, ironically, his own photography. Support for this claim is drawn from the field of art in Russia. The Russian Revolution and the Constructivist movement brought into the public gaze artists such as Rodchenko, El Lissitzky and Valentina Kulagina, who saw photography as one of a series of genres that might renovate the social order and transforms the public's habitual perception. Photography became central in the movement to replace Academic art and thus a key route to photography's consecration. However, as Benjamin pointed out there is a danger of decontextualising and 'eternalising' the photographs or photomontages that make the transition into the art museum. They may remain neither the art of the community from which they emerged, nor be recognised as an expressive resource for later dominated groups; instead such canonised works may become a status adornment of those with cultural capital. In the charged religious context of post-Reformation Germany, debate ensued about the power of weather bells to disperse the thunderstorms traditionally thought to be the work of demons and witches. Catholics and Protestants alike inherited medieval notions of demonic agency in the atmosphere, but they differed on the appropriate remedy. Protestant critics ridiculed the consecration of bells as a corruption of baptism and rejected their sonic agency as a violation of God’s providence, retaining weather bells as a compulsion to the collective prayer that alone could assuage God’s wrath. Defenders of Catholic practice, however, rehearsed medieval arguments for bell apotropaism and insisted on their efficacy against storms, appealing variously to their consecration or to the prayer they compelled. If published Catholic opinion shifted markedly against apotropaic sound in the Enlightenment, local populations continued to hear weather bells in traditional ways, and to posit bells as powerful deterrents against demonic listeners. This study seeks to explore the paratextual packaging of Suat Derviş's In the Shadow of the Yalı through a sociological lens, probing the connections between the consecrating power of translation and its role in dispelling cultural stereotypes. Arguing that asymmetrical power relations and translation flows have a significant impact on the representation of cultures in and/or through translation, the study first focuses on the stereotypical image(s) of the Turkish women writers in the Anglophone book market. Secondly, the study notes that the representation of Derviş for the Anglophone reader's reception is beyond the confines of those images, revealing the role played by the translator Maureen Freely in challenging the prevailing practices of Western image construction and dissemination. Thirdly, against the backdrop of the distinction between translation as consecration and consecration by translational agents, the study scrutinizes the paratextual framing strategies that serve to transfer the consecrating agents' symbolic capital to Derviş. The study concludes that while translation into a dominant literary field might be the initial step toward consecrating a writer from a less dominant culture, translation becomes an instrument that propagates existing power hierarchies when translational agents perpetuate the stereotypical representations that influence the positioning, promotion, and reception of translations. Holiness can be analysed in terms of three frameworks: as a real property of sacred persons, places, things, and times; as an ascription of a special status, especially that of ownership by or proximity to God; and as a project of spiritual and ethical striving. The Bible exemplifies each of these approaches, endowing Judaism with a complex teaching as to the nature of holiness. Although an ontological sense of holiness persists, Judaism comes increasingly to emphasize spiritual and moral self-transformation as the essence of holiness.

This article explores the impact of the Nobel Prize on the visual economy of literary culture by analysing how photographic author portraits are used by the Nobel Foundation and the Swedish Academy to construct a visual pantheon of literary laureates. The photographic Nobel pantheon is here conceptualised as a transnational visual construction that has a unique symbolic function in demarcating, homogenising, and essentialising the global literary field. It is argued that the images, together with their use by the consecrating institutions, 'mythologise' the author persona as a timeless, supra-national essence rather than presenting the more accurate picture of an historically, nationally, and culturally specific and contingent conception of literature. In analysing the semiotic structures and functions, as well as aesthetic patterns of photographic author portraits in relation to implicit notions of authorship, the article thereby shines a critical light on institutional ideology and its relation to visual culture. Coventry Cathedral was bombed in 1940; the new cathedral, consecrated in 1962, was in many ways an exceptional cathedral, reflecting the outstanding architecture of the building, its gifted leadership, and its commitment to reconciliation. This paper focuses on the analysis of the problems of urban society, and the role of cathedrals in them, developed in Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s. The argument developed by Provost Williams was that urbanisation had changed the nature of parishes. In an agrarian society the village is a natural unit, and those attending the parish church belong to a real community. However, urban parishes are not natural communities in that sense; in urban society people regard themselves as belonging to a city rather than a parish. He argued that a central church was needed, such as a cathedral, that could relate to the city as a whole, engaging with all aspects of urban society. This is what Provost Williams attempted in Coventry, calling it the 'Coventry experiment'. He hoped to reconnect church life with a natural community, and to bring reconciliation to a fragmented urban society. It was a bold experiment, and one that invigorated the cathedral community, though it probably made less difference to urban society in Coventry than he hoped. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper revisits the 1995 IALC Dublin Statement on the Eucharist, focusing on the Eucharistic Prayer. It reviews newer insights and studies on the Eucharistic Prayer, and suggests how that broadly may impact subsequent Anglican use of 'classical patterns', It also puts forward suggestions and questions posed by some more recent Anglican revisions as well as revisiting some areas of the Dublin Statement that are still useul or so far have not been fully embraced in Anglican liturgical revision. This article explores the impact of the Nobel Prize in Literature on the acquisition policies of literary archives. Focusing on laureates and the twenty-first-century fate of their manuscripts, it argues that the international reach of the prize is mirrored by a contemporary archival landscape that is at once global and unequal. Although many archives concentrate on collecting material from the linguistic and cultural context of which they themselves form part, the past two decades have also seen the emergence of a competitive international market for the papers of authors whose writings are marked – through high-profile distinctions such as the Nobel Prize – as belonging to the world literary canon. Illustrating its larger argument with the help of three case studies (Harold Pinter, J.M. Coetzee, Gabriel García Márquez), the article suggests that archivization consecrates laureates' papers as global heritage at the same time that it reinforces the logic of literary nativism. In contemporary China, âexperimental architectureâ depicts the rise of independent architectural explorations offered by a group of young Chinese architects in the mid-1990s. These young Chinese architects claimed to have established an autonomous architecture, distant from commercial interventions. This research examines the credibility of architectural autonomy stated by these architects in light of the field theory put forward by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Through this interdisciplinary perspective, the paper focuses on the often overlooked interpersonal networks of critics, architects, and publishers. Through analysing their roles in promoting these experimental architects on the basis of professional publications, this research argues that the notion of architectural autonomy is constituted by a symbiotic collaboration among these actors through a discursive approach and architectural autonomy, despite indicating an architectural resistance against commercial forces, serves a commodity sold in the cultural market.

Cet article plaide pour analyser le couple à la croisée des études de genre et de la sociologie de la littérature, deux traditions de recherche au sein desquelles cette institution sociale a fait l’objet de traitements déséquilibrés, plus poussés dans la première que dans la seconde. L’étude des trajectoires et des textes de Marie NDiaye et Jean-Yves Cendrey, deux écrivain·es professionnel·les marié·es publié·es depuis la deuxième moitié des années 1980 chez Minuit, P.O.L., L’Olivier, Gallimard et Actes Sud, veut au contraire illustrer l’intérêt qu’il y a à articuler les échelles individuelles et conjugales pour envisager des modes de socialisation, de sociabilité, de lecture, d’écriture, d’interventions médiatiques et de positionnements littéraires. Contrepoids symbolique et matériel face aux maisons d’édition et aux médias, ce couple peut dès lors apparaître comme un garant de l’autonomie relative dans le champ littéraire, où il a partiellement déjoué les positionnements littéraires et la répartition historique du capital symbolique au prisme des rapports sociaux de sexe, de race et de classe.

Sociologists are paying increasing attention to the business and financial elites that control today's global economy; indeed, there's a great need to understand who these elites are, what they do, and what makes them tick, as individuals, and as a class. But we also need to understand how the economic elites aremade in the current social and economic system, and one significant way of doing this, is by examining elite business schools, that is, the institutions that aim to train and prepare people to assume important leadership and decision‐making positions in business, finance and related sectors of critical importance to the management of modern capitalism. Based on the notion of consecration, I empirically examine how the student union of Sweden's premier business school, The Stockholm School of Economics, offers its members a learning environment partly separated from the school, and how this semi‐independent organization contributes to making undergraduate students socially, morally and esthetically meritorious for elite jobs in primarily management consulting and finance; a process that is largely shaped by corporate actors that participate formally and informally in the student union activities. The paper contributes to the sociological literature on business schools and higher education and elites, both theoretically through the twin notions of meritocracy and consecration, and empirically through its unique focus on student union activities in an elite business school setting. At the heart of Montfort's teaching is the understanding that Mary, as the Mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother, plays a vital role in our journey toward God. Through the act of consecration, we entrust ourselves entirely to Mary's care and guidance, acknowledging her as our advocate, intercessor, and protector. This act of consecration is not a mere formality but a profound commitment to live our lives in imitation of Mary's virtues, surrendering our will to hers and allowing her to lead us closer to her Son, Jesus Christ. By consecrating ourselves to Mary, we open ourselves to her powerful maternal love, inviting her to mold and shape us into instruments of God's grace, and to deepen our relationship with her Son. In essence, the consecration to Mary is an invitation to walk the path of holiness under her guidance, trusting in her maternal care as we strive to live authentic Christian lives. In St. Louis Montfort's teaching, there exist two vital elements of the Totus Tuus consecration, namely: the nature of the consecration and the practices of the consecration. It has four fundamental characteristics that remarkably reflect the scriptural aspect of the consecration. From its emergence in early Christianity to its invocation in twenty-first century debates, martyrdom has always highlighted the complex relationship between politics, religion, death, and memory. A specifically political notion of martyrdom beyond the world's faith traditions would facilitate the concept's more capacious application and analysis. Political martyrdom, I argue, consists of several components: (1) a death, occurring in what we might call "unnatural" circumstances, connected in some way to an individual's identity(ies) or political commitments; (2) consecration of that death by a community or sub-community; and (3) transmission of accounts of that death across time, through processes of commemoration. This essay illuminates the ways by which political communities enshrine certain deaths in their collective memory, where they subsequently contribute to communal solidarity, identity formation, and political mobilization. I conclude by reflecting on how political martyrdom offers new insights into the intersection of politics, religion, death, and memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

'Elite communities' are the areas where the wealthy, and even 'superrich', live, socialize and raise their children as future economic and financial elites; they are the places where a few lead socially and economically privileged lives. Earlier studies have concentrated on the inner dynamics of these settings, focusing on the way residents are constructed and socialized as elites through their social, communicative and aesthetic abilities that are perceived as exemplary in contemporary neoliberal society. In this paper, we broaden the perspective, by exploring how these areas contribute to polarization, that is, how they generate distinctions based on money, morals and manners that are peculiar to neoliberalism's idealization of 'entrepreneurship', 'self-management', 'leadership' and the pursuit of an 'active lifestyle'. Our data come from two major ethnographic studies: one conducted between 2010 and 2015 of Sweden's wealthiest community, Djursholm, that is populated by the country's business and financial elites; the other conducted between 2016 and 2019 of three of Australia's most prestigious and economically privileged suburbs, Toorak (Melbourne), Mosman (Sydney) and Cottesloe (Perth). The image of the church as a pilgrimaging community under the sacramental authority of the bishop as the high priest of his flock (SC 41) is central to liturgy in which church buildings and altars are dedicated. This article sums up the reform of that part of the Roman Pontifical, which contains these rites. It also offers some liturgical and ecclesiological insights, which could be of interest in the context of the current worldwide synodal process in the Roman Catholic Church. An undoubtably positive result of the reform of these rites is the pneumatical effort which can be observed throughout the entire celebration. Malheureusement, certaines activités associées à l’ampleur des travaux de modernisation d’infrastructures qui s’opèrent ces dernières années en RDC altèrent la qualité de l’environnement au point de rendre le qualificatif « sain », adjoint au concept environnement, inapproprié et inadapté.

Curiously, we have no previous studies that deal monographically with the question of the sacralisation of spaces in Visigoth Iberia. It is intended in the following pages to fill this historiographical gap by focusing on the particular case of the churches. By means of the compilation and exhaustive analysis of all the available documentary sources, particularly the available conciliar canons, it is aimed to identify the different prescriptions and strategies that were used to sacralise new places of worship in Iberia during the Visigothic period. Particular emphasis will be placed on ritual procedures, which are mandatory for the consecration of any church, but also on material and sensorial factors as complementary determinants in the definition of sacred space. The final result obtained provides us with a reality dominated by a heterogeneity of situations that were sometimes far from conforming to the reality desired by canon law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article traces the history of the "Instructions to the newly appointed priest" from the 13th to the 20th century. This text was created in Rus' and has a compilation character. It exists in two editions - the Full one (from the 13th century) and the Short one, which is known from the manuscript copies from the beginning of the 15th century and possibly associated with Metropolitan Cyprian. The "Instruction" was given to the priest during the liturgy; and this has determined the distribution of the text. The language of the "Instruction" was regularly updated; in the Kyiv Metropolis, it included the vocabulary of "prosta mova". The "Instruction" was repeatedly published in print both in the Moscow Patriarchate and in the Kyiv Metropolis, supplied with comments on incomprehensible words. The last analyzed edition originated in 1930 in Warsaw. The history of the "Instruction" testifies to the remarkable stability of the text, despite its archaic nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Capitalizing on the documents from the secular and church archives, the present article presents an almost unique case, namely an Orthodox church built, but unfinished, in the city of Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna county, a city with a majority ethnic Hungarian population. It resisted the pressures of the Horthyst and Communist regimes, and thus in 1983, 45 years after the foundation stone was laid, it was completed, with the approval of the local and central Communist leaders. In this paper, I examine how the formally powerless Swedish King consecrates neoliberalism by promoting the idea of ‘leadership’ in his role as the Honorary Chairman of the World Scout Foundation, a global organization dedicated to educating and fostering young people all over the world. ‘Leadership’, which stresses people’s individual responsibility, entrepreneurship, activity and productivity, and positive thinking, is a critical component of neoliberalism and the market-based society, regarded both as a political ideology, and a way of life. The paper has two contributions to sociology: First, I manifest the status of monarchs as contemporary elites, that is, powerful actors with unproportionate access to economic, social, cultural, communicative and organizational resources. Second, I propose how elites’ consecration is not only limited to sanctifying certain groups of people/classes in contemporary society, but include the social and moral elevation of ideologies, ideas and human capabilities as well. This article examines woodblock prints of the Sūtra of the Dhāraṇī of the Precious Casket Seal of the Concealed Complete-Body Relics of the Essence of All Tathāgatas, a short text that came to serve as a backbone for the textual relic cult and, starting in the early Koryŏ, became an important part of consecratory deposits of Buddhist icons. This article focuses on how material embodiments of dhāraṇīs were enshrined in the Korean context and how such enshrinement defined their function and meaning. Through an analysis of the Dhāraṇī of the Precious Casket Seal in diverse forms, visual designs, and ritual contexts from the eleventh to the fourteenth century, the article demonstrates that the materiality of this important dhāraṇī was key to its performativity as a sacred object that could consecrate otherwise manmade architectural or iconic entities. By so doing, this study reveals key aspects of the Buddhist visual culture that have long remained obscure, while contributing to the growing scholarship on textual materiality in premodern Korea. In this paper, I examine how the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, systematically consecrates the nation's business and corporate elites who have come to dominate Swedish society during the last decades concomitant with a fundamental transformation from traditional social-democracy to neoliberalism, that is, a society characterized by the logic of corporations and markets. By promoting the business and corporate elites, the King contributes to strengthening their status and legitimacy in relation to other groups, while at the same time he reproduces his own elite status and image as a "corporate king." In order to examine this dual elite legitimation, I have studied three major official duties in the King's official role as Sweden's head of state: (a) the awarding of the most prestigious royal medals to corporate leaders; (b) the invitation of these elites to official royal dinners; and (c) state visits, whereby the corporate elites are given a peculiar status in relation to other elite groups. Based on this unique data on the activities of a living monarch, I refute the common assumption among sociologists today that royals, and particularly monarchs, are powerless figures and therefore irrelevant as study objects. By consecrating business and its leaders, monarchs contribute to legitimizing neoliberalism, thus strengthening its hegemony, as well as their own standing. Sartre’s effort to assimilate the achievements of American novelists, notably Faulkner, Hemingway and Dos Passos, played a major role in his literary apprenticeship. By explicitly emphasizing this filiation, he distinguished himself from his predecessors and from competitors he faced in his own country. In turn, after 1945, thanks to the fame he gained, he did much to boost the reputation of his American masters, in France and around the world. We will reconstruct this symbolic exchange and analyze the forms of appropriation and misappropriation that Sartre practiced with respect to his models. We will also see how the transformation of his position after 1945 affected his attitude towards writers admired in his youth. On the theoretical level, we will test some general hypotheses concerning, on the one hand, the conditions of the transnational circulation and consecration of literary works (Bourdieu, 2002 ; Sapiro, 2012, 2013 and 2016b ; Casanova, 2015), and, on the other hand, the factors that determine writers’ choices, including with respect to the technical aspects of their works. In particular, we will highlight the role of symbolic struggles, showing that we can shed new light on writers’ practices by considering them as « position-taking », linked to the state of the field, locally and globally, and to the characteristics of the positions the writers occupy in it (Bourdieu, 1992).

Some manuscripts of the 11th and 12th centuries preserved in Catalonia present a specific rite when a bishop had to consecrate a church. In the altar he placed relics, three fragments of hosts, three grains of incense and small parchments on which was written the information about the consecration, the ten commandments and the beginning of the four gospels. The Catalan consecration ritual corresponded to a specific liturgical codification, the Catalan-Narbonne ordo, which is generally accepted to have been strictly followed. However, archaeological excavations carried out in pre-Romanesque and Romanesque churches in Catalonia since the 19th century have often brought to light a practice that was not codified in these texts: the modest containers of wood, stone or alabaster that contained the consecration relics had been engraved with names. This paper is dedicated to these nominal inscriptions from the consecration ritual, found inside the altars.

In this article I report observations from an ethnographic study of a Swedish economic elite community, including interviews with residents and service staff, and participant observations in various social contexts stretching over a period of five years that can contribute to an understanding of how elite communities respond to potential social deviance among its members, such as feelings of insufficiency and stress, thus trying to avoid any 'desecration' of their social and cultural capital. Specifically, I examine how the practices through which desecration is avoided, for example the exclusion of unwanted members, interplay in the further consecration of the communities, thus maintaining and strengthening elites' status and standing, Studying the problems and difficulties experienced by elites in their neighborhood settings, and how they try to manage them, is potentially an important step forward to better analyze and understand the way powerful groups in contemporary society maintain and strengthen their privileges and power. This article analyzes visual artists' response to online sales and dissemination technologies by mapping the range of corresponding positions and position-takings by professional artists in Norway. We consider whether artists' responses align with traditional logics of artistic consecration identified in Bourdieu's accounts of the field of cultural production, and how these responses correspond to Rogers' theory of diffusion of innovations. Employing multiple correspondence analysis, we find position-takings toward online sales and dissemination can be structured by a dimension differentiating between technology-oriented optimism and techno-skepticism, between high and neutral levels of risk aversion toward online technologies, and thirdly between technology adopters and those still at an intentional stage. This paper seeks to understand and theorize Pakistani literature festivals. In order to do so, I study the programs and schedules of the Karachi Literature Festival from 2010–2020 and the Lahore Literary Festival from 2013–2020. Using Andrew Shryock's idea of Other-consciousness and building on Ammara Maqsood's anthropological work done in urban Pakistan, I argue that the conception, programming, and execution of festivals like the Karachi and the Lahore festivals are governed by a "scopaesthesiac consciousness" – a consciousness of being observed and judged by an imagined outsider. As a result, the organizers and producers of these festivals are less interested in showcasing an organic literary production and more interested in portraying a "soft image of Pakistan" to an imagined outsider. By means of the compilation and exhaustive analysis of all the available documentary sources, particularly the available conciliar canons, it is aimed to identify the different prescriptions and strategies that were used to sacralise new places of worship in Iberia during the Visigothic period. Particular emphasis will be placed on ritual procedures, which are mandatory for the consecration of any church, but also on material and sensorial factors as complementary determinants in the definition of sacred space. The final result obtained provides us with a reality dominated by a heterogeneity of situations that were sometimes far from conforming to the reality desired by canon law.

The chances of transnational success for a peripheral scholar are slim, so the cases that escape this trend, such as Fernando Henrique Cardoso, give food for thought.
