Currently, Mediterranean forests are experiencing the deleterious effects of global warming, which mainly include increased temperatures and decreased precipitation in the region. Relict Abies pinsapo fir forests, endemic in the southern Iberian Peninsula, are especially sensitive to these recent environmental disturbances, and identifying the genes involved in the response of this endangered tree species to climate-driven stresses is of paramount importance for mitigating their effects. Genomic resources for A. pinsapo allow for the analysis of candidate genes reacting to warming and aridity in their natural habitats. Several members of the complex gene families encoding late embryogenesis abundant proteins (LEAs) and heat shock proteins (HSPs) have been found to exhibit differential expression patterns between wet and dry seasons when samples from distinct geographical locations and dissimilar exposures to the effects of climate change were analyzed. The observed changes were more perceptible in the roots of trees, particularly in declining forests distributed at lower altitudes in the more vulnerable mountains. These findings align with previous studies and lay the groundwork for further research on the molecular level. Temporal growth variability is an important indicator of ecosystem function under climate change. However, we still lack a unified understanding of how climate conditions, climate change (trends and variability), nitrogen (N) deposition, functional traits and stand factors together affect radial growth variability.Using global conifer tree‐ring records (123 species from 1780 sites) during 1970–2010 to calculate growth variability, we assessed how abiotic and stand factors affect growth variability directly and indirectly via functional traits with boosted regression tree and structural equation models, and examined the differences among continents (North America, Asia and Europe).We found: (a) growth variability was mainly affected by warm‐induced drought and increased at lower latitudes. Climate warming in winter could decrease growth variability, but this effect is by far not enough to offset the threat of hotter drought; (b) there existed a trade‐off between fast‐ and slow‐growing (drought tolerance) strategies for global conifer species, and abiotic and stand factors affected growth variability via functional traits. Contrary to common conjecture, species with higher drought tolerance revealed higher growth variability due to their occupation of more xeric sites, and may also because higher investment in drought tolerance leads to less investment remaining for growth; (c) older trees revealed higher growth variability due to their more conservative growth strategy, while at large scales, taller trees showed lower growth variability due to occupying more productive sites; and (d) moderate N deposition could reduce growth variability by leading conifers to adopt a more fast‐growing strategy (e.g. in Asia), but long‐term and excessive N deposition led to increased growth variability (e.g. in North America and Europe).Synthesis. Our results suggest that coniferous forests in water‐limited regions should be more vulnerable to hotter drought, and the 'fast–slow' growth strategies may be key in regulating the effects of various abiotic and stand factors on ecosystem stability. Biodiversity loss and vast forest diebacks due to climate change‐induced disturbances require adapted forest management strategies that reconcile economic interests and conservation. Tree species selection, including admixture of fast‐growing and drought‐tolerant non‐native species to native forests, is an increasingly considered approach. However, we lack data on how such mixtures affect native forest biodiversity, especially for the sparsely researched major above‐ground part of trees, the canopy.In 40 temperate forest plots in northwest Germany, we investigated how monocultures and admixtures of introduced fast‐growing conifers (native Norway spruce planted outside its natural range and non‐native Douglas fir) to native broadleaved European beech forests affect abundance, biomass, taxonomic and functional diversity and community composition of canopy beetles across trophic guilds. Diverse arthropod communities are vital contributors to forest health and resilience, and therefore valuable indicators to assess and evaluate forestry measures.Monospecific stands of non‐native Douglas fir reduced canopy beetle abundance and diversity compared to native European beech, exceeding the negative effects of Norway spruce. These effects were more pronounced for herbivorous beetles, while they were less strong for predators. Beetle communities in monospecific Norway spruce stands had low functional richness. European beech and mixtures with non‐native Douglas fir had high dissimilarity between local communities (turnover, i.e. beta diversity) and high total beetle diversity at landscape scale (gamma diversity). Mixtures generally mitigated the negative effects of introduced conifers, including shifts in species community composition compared to native European beech.Synthesis and applications: Monospecific stands of fast‐growing non‐native Douglas fir and native Norway spruce planted outside its natural occurrence showed undesirable effects such as low diversity and a shifted community composition of canopy beetles compared to native European beech. However, mixed stands mitigated negative effects and specifically admixed non‐native Douglas fir did not reduce species turnover and landscape‐scale beetle diversity. In line with recent studies on other forest taxa, we conclude that admixtures of introduced conifers to European beech forests, but not monospecific plantations, can potentially serve as a compromise between conservational and economic interests. The asbestos mining industry has deeply transformed the landscapes of southern Quebec, leaving behind about 800 million tonnes of tailings and waste rock (overburden) in large piles near former mining towns. Some environmental issues arising from these landscapes (e.g., wind and water erosion) have been successfully addressed by covering the piles by mixing by-products to create technosols, which are then seeded with grasses. Yet, no attempt at afforestation had been made thus far because these environments are thought to impose too many constraints on tree establishment and growth. We developed two experimental plantations at a decommissioned asbestos mine in southern Quebec, on waste rocks and on tailings, to test the performance of eight tree species/clones/provenances planted on two types of technosols. Both were constructed from mixtures of municipal biosolids and deinking sludge and configured in small windrows. Soil texture, apparent bulk density, element composition, including carbon, nitrogen and some metals, as well as soil temperature, water potential and volumetric water content were assessed, together with seedling survival and growth (diameter and height). Leaf specific surface area, nutrients, water use efficiency (δ13C) and gas exchange (i.e., net photosynthetic assimilation rate, Anet, and stomatal conductance to water vapour, gsw) were evaluated for three hybrid poplar clones (Populus spp.) during the third growing season. Hybrid poplar clones had significantly higher survival (87–94%) after three years than planted conifers (10–56%) that were tested, although dry planting conditions could have exerted adverse effects on conifers. The conifer species exhibiting the highest survival rates (46–56%) was white spruce (Picea glauca). Average growth rates of hybrid poplar clones were 45 cm y−1, with some tree heights reaching over 300 cm after three years. Clone DN × M-915508 appears to be more drought-tolerant than other clones being tested. Phosphorus and potassium were the most growth-limiting nutrients. Few differences were apparent between technosols; results suggest that the addition of Class B contaminated soils to the main mixture of by-products has benefits with respect to tree survival and growth. Our study demonstrates a promising technology for reclamation through afforestation of asbestos mines in southern Quebec. Some treatments should be added to limit plant competition within the first few years as a means of augmenting survival and growth, whereas limited technosol volume and accompanying low moisture and nutrient availability could compromise mid- to long-term growth of trees. An increased frequency and severity of droughts and heat waves have resulted in increased tree mortality and forest dieback across the world, but underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We used a common garden experiment with 20 conifer tree species to quantify mortality after three consecutive hot, dry summers and tested whether mortality could be explained by putative underlying mechanisms, such as stem hydraulics and legacies affected by leaf life span and stem growth responses to previous droughts. Mortality varied from 0 to 79% across species and was not affected by hydraulic traits. Mortality increased with species' leaf life span probably because leaf damage caused crown dieback and contributed to carbon depletion and bark beetle damage. Mortality also increased with lower growth resilience, which may exacerbate the contribution of carbon depletion and bark beetle sensitivity to tree mortality. Juniperus L. is a very diverse genus of dioecious or monoecious conifers distributed throughout the Mediterranean region. In addition to the complex taxonomic characteristics of the genus, sexual dimorphism leads to sexspecific differences in the morphology of juniper species, which further complicates the delimitation of species. Two of these species, Juniperus oxycedrus L., which occurs in the western part of the Mediterranean, and J. deltoides R.P.Adams, which occurs in the eastern part, have only recently been delimited as separate species. To further support the delimitation of the species, we examined the phenotypic traits of the cones and needles of both species for both sexes. Three populations from the western and three from the eastern part of the Mediterranean region were sampled and a total of 2400 needles, 1200 cones and 1200 seeds were measured and analyzed. Both needles and cones of J. oxycedrus were slightly larger, longer and wider than those of J. deltoides and also less variable. Sexual dimorphism was observed in most of the needle traits measured, with the majority of traits in J. oxycedrus being larger in females than in males. Although sexual dimorphism was confirmed based on needle morphology, no consistent pattern of diversity was observed between the two species. In addition, variability among populations of J. oxycedrus was higher than that of J. deltoides. Our results confirm the previous species delimitation and open the possibility for further exploration of sex-specific differences in adaptability, as well as the potential implications for differential management and conservation of individuals of both sexes. In species with large and complex genomes such as conifers, dense linkage maps are a useful resource for supporting genome assembly and laying the genomic groundwork at the structural, populational, and functional levels. However, most of the 600+ extant conifer species still lack extensive genotyping resources, which hampers the development of high-density linkage maps. In this study, we developed a linkage map relying on 21,570 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis [Bong.] Carr.), a long-lived conifer from western North America that is widely planted for productive forestry in the British Isles. We used a single-step mapping approach to efficiently combine RAD-seq and genotyping array SNP data for 528 individuals from 2 full-sib families. As expected for spruce taxa, the saturated map contained 12 linkages groups with a total length of 2,142 cM. The positioning of 5,414 unique gene coding sequences allowed us to compare our map with that of other Pinaceae species, which provided evidence for high levels of synteny and gene order conservation in this family. We then developed an integrated map for P. sitchensis and Picea glauca based on 27,052 markers and 11,609 gene sequences. Altogether, these 2 linkage maps, the accompanying catalog of 286,159 SNPs and the genotyping chip developed, herein, open new perspectives for a variety of fundamental and more applied research objectives, such as for the improvement of spruce genome assemblies, or for marker-assisted sustainable management of genetic resources in Sitka spruce and related species. The giant sequoia, a serotinous conifer naturally occurring in mixed‐conifer forests of the southern and central Sierra Nevada, California, USA, is the world's largest tree species. Giant sequoia reproduction has been severely lacking over the past century, due to fire exclusion, creating a significant conservation threat. Previous research on postfire sequoia reproduction in high‐severity fire areas, relative to low‐ and moderate‐severity areas, is limited. At 6 years postfire, we investigated giant sequoia reproduction in a high‐severity fire area, and nearby low‐/mixed‐severity fire areas, in the Nelder Grove, which burned in 2017 in the Railroad fire. Postfire giant sequoia reproduction was positively correlated with fire severity in terms of density, height (growth), and proportion (relative to other conifer species), and sequoia seedling/sapling density was positively correlated with percent shrub cover. There was no correlation between distance to live sequoia seed source and density of sequoia reproduction. More research is needed in other mixed‐severity fire areas, with larger high‐severity fire patches, to determine whether a similar postfire response occurs elsewhere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolutionary dynamics of tree species are influenced by their specific climatic environments, and their ability to persist is determined by adaptive strategies such as broad climate tolerance, phenotypic plasticity or genetic differentiation. Biogeographical predictions indicate that populations located at the edges of their ranges are more likely to experience heightened vulnerability to climatic fluctuations due to approaching tolerance limits. However, if local phenotypic acclimation or genetic adaptation has taken place, trees near the edge of their range could demonstrate comparable sensitivity to freeze and drought as the rest of the sampled population. Nevertheless, there remains uncertainty regarding the extent of developmental and evolutionary adjustments in climate sensitivity across the entire ranges of many tree species.Here, we document the biogeography of tree growth sensitivity to freeze and soil water and vapour pressure deficits during 1950–2018 using an extensive multi‐species tree‐ring dataset of 35,784 trees at 4535 sites covering boreal, temperate conifer and temperate deciduous forests of Canada. We quantify the relationships between tree radial growth increment and seasonal climate variables and explore factors driving the observed patterns of annual growth and climate sensitivity such as species, regional climate and local site conditions, and tree age and size.Freeze and drought had widespread impacts on tree growth that were contingent on the presence of focal species in interaction with tree size. An indirect growth thermal limitation towards cold/wet edges, occurring through the site moisture conditions, was observed in seven widespread species (e.g. Picea glauca, Picea mariana and Larix laricina). Moreover, six species had negative drought impacts more strongly expressed towards their warm/dry edges (e.g. Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera and Pseudotsuga menziesii). However, widespread Picea, Pinus and Populus species showed no indication of increased sensitivity to soil water conditions at these edges.Synthesis. Our findings support the idea of evolutionary or acclimatization adjustments in the development of populations in response to long‐term climate conditions experienced in their respective locations. This underscores the importance of incorporating phenotypic and genomic data into future analyses of climate change impacts, which would enhance our ability to predict potential ecological shifts. Hot droughts, droughts attributed to below-average precipitation and exceptional warmth, are increasingly common in the twenty-first century, yet little is known about their effect on coniferous tree growth because of their historical rarity. In much of the American West, including California, radial tree growth is principally driven by precipitation, and narrow ring widths are typically associated with either drier or drought conditions. However, for species growing at high elevations (e.g., Larix lyalli, Pinus albicaulis), growth can be closely aligned with above-average temperatures with maximum growth coinciding with meteorological drought, suggesting that the growth effects of drought span from adverse to beneficial depending on location. Here, we compare radial growth responses of three high-elevation old-growth pines (Pinus jeffreyi, P. lambertiana, and P. contorta) growing in the San Jacinto Mountains, California, during a twenty-first-century hot drought (2000–2020) largely caused by exceptional warmth and a twentieth-century drought (1959–1966) principally driven by precipitation deficits. Mean radial growth during the hot drought was 12% above average while 18% below average during the mid-century drought illustrating that the consequences of environmental stress exhibit spatiotemporal variability. We conclude that the effects of hot droughts on tree growth in high-elevation forests may produce responses different than what is commonly associated with extended dry periods for much of western North America's forested lands at lower elevational ranges and likely applies to other mountainous regions (e.g., Mediterranean Europe) defined by summer-dry conditions. Thus, the climatological/biological interactions discovered in Southern California may offer clues to the unique nature of high-elevation forested ecosystems globally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Serotiny is an adaptive trait that allows certain woody plants to persist in stand‐replacing fire regimes. However, the mechanisms by which serotinous cones avoid seed necrosis and nonserotinous species persist in landscapes with short fire cycles and serotinous competitors remain poorly understood.To investigate whether ovulate cone traits that enhance seed survival differ between serotinous and nonserotinous species, we examined cone traits in 24 species within Pinaceae and Cupressaceae based on physical measurements and cone heating simulations using a computational fluid dynamics model.Fire‐relevant cone traits were largely similar between cone types; those that differed (e.g. density and moisture) conferred little seed survival advantage under simulated fire. The most important traits influencing seed survival were cone size and seed depth within the cone, which was found to be an allometric function of cone mass for both cone types.Thus, nonserotinous cones should not suffer significantly greater seed necrosis than serotinous cones of equal size. Closed nonserotinous cones containing mature seeds may achieve substantial regeneration after fire if they are sufficiently large relative to fire duration and temperature. To our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive study of the effects of fire‐relevant cone traits on conifer regeneration supported by physics‐based fire simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pine pitch canker, caused by the ascomycete Fusarium circinatum, poses a substantial threat to pine trees and Douglas firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and has been identified as a pervasive issue in forests and nurseries worldwide, particularly in regions where susceptible conifers are cultivated. Given its prevalence in the Iberian Peninsula, assessments of the susceptibility of diverse European provenances of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris)—specifically those from Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine—have been conducted. Preliminary evaluations of Polish provenances have raised concerns about the potential threat to Scots pine stands in Poland posed by pitch canker. Under controlled conditions, we examined the impact of F. circinatum inoculation on the survival of seeds and seedlings from ten provenances of Scots pine. In response, the initial assessment of F. circinatum pathogenicity was undertaken in a controlled greenhouse environment. This evaluation uncovered a heightened susceptibility of pine seedlings to pitch canker among the tested provenances. Notably, one Lithuanian provenance demonstrated superior resistance to pitch canker, while two Polish provenances exhibited a higher prevalence of symptomless seedlings. These findings underscore the need for further exploration and identification of resilient individuals within these provenances, offering valuable insights for developing strategies to mitigate the impact of pitch canker on Scots pine in Europe. Background: Fire behaviour assessments of past wildfire events have major implications for anticipating post-fire ecosystem responses and fuel treatments to mitigate extreme fire behaviour of subsequent wildfires. Aims: This study evaluates for the first time the potential of remote sensing techniques to provide explicit estimates of fire type (surface fire, intermittent crown fire, and continuous crown fire) in Mediterranean ecosystems. Methods: Random Forest classification was used to assess the capability of spectral indices and multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) image fractions (char, photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation) retrieved from Sentinel-2 data to predict fire type across four large wildfires Key results: MESMA fraction images procured more accurate fire type estimates in broadleaf and conifer forests than spectral indices, without remarkable confusion among fire types. High crown fire likelihood in conifer and broadleaf forests was linked to a post-fire MESMA char fractional cover of about 0.8, providing a direct physical interpretation. Conclusions: Intrinsic biophysical characteristics such as the fractional cover of char retrieved from sub-pixel techniques with physical basis are accurate to assess fire type given the direct physical interpretation. Implications: MESMA may be leveraged by land managers to determine fire type across large areas, but further validation with field data is advised. Satellite products with a direct physical meaning were accurate for estimating fire behaviour (surface fire, intermittent crown fire, and continuous crown fire) of past wildfire events across large burned Mediterranean ecosystems. Key message: The current status of molecular regulation of nitrogen assimilation and recent advances made in gymnosperms are reviewed. Gymnosperms are a heterogeneous and ancient group of seed plants that includes conifers, ginkgos, cycads and gnetophytes. Molecular studies on extant gymnosperms have been constrained by some discouraging features for experimental research such as their long life cycles, large sizes, complex megagenomes and abundant phenolic compounds in their woody tissues. However, the development of high-throughput sequencing and refined multiomics technologies in the last few years has allowed to explore the molecular basis of essential processes in this ancient lineage of plants. Nitrogen is one of the main limiting factors determining vascular development and biomass production in woody plants. Therefore, nitrogen uptake, metabolism, storage and recycling are essential processes for fundamental gymnosperm biology. Here, recent progress in the molecular regulation of nitrogen assimilation in gymnosperms is reviewed and some future perspectives on this topic are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To reconstruct a fossil forest in three dimensions, an accurate estimation of tree height is crucial. However, modelling the height-diameter relationship of ancient trees is difficult, because the trunks of fossil trees are usually fragmentary, making direct height measurements impossible. One practical approach for reconstructing ancient tree height is to use growth models based on the height-diameter relationships of the nearest living relatives of fossil taxa. Here we apply 19 models to describe height-diameter relationships of living Araucaria trees for establishing appropriate models for ancient Araucariaceae trees. Data come from four living populations of Araucaria: A. bidwillii and A. cunninghamii in Queensland, Australia, and A. cunninghamii and A. hunsteinii in New Guinea. According to an AIC-based model selection, a power function with an exponent of 0.67 (termed here the modified Mosbrugger model) is found to be the most appropriate for each population and for the entire dataset (157 trees), but normalization constants differ across populations. To find the most appropriate models for the genus Araucaria, 100 random samples (each population generating 25 random samples) from the entire dataset are used. Based on 100 curve fitting results on each model and multiple performance criteria, three median models are generated from the medians of their parameter estimates. Of these, the median 2pPower model works best for Araucaria, but the modified Mosbrugger and Curtis models perform nearly as well. As wildfires increase in size and severity, large areas of forest are undergoing substantial increases in shrub cover. In forests where water is the limiting resource, the partitioning of soil water between shrubs and young trees may determine how shrubs affect tree growth and water-stress. Here we evaluated juvenile trees (average age = 32 years) of two dominant conifer species in the southern Sierra Nevada of California (Abies concolor (white fir) and Pinus jeffreyi (Jeffrey pine)) growing in the presence or absence of shrubs. The two shrub species included Arctostaphylos patula and Ceanothus cordulatus , a nitrogen-fixing species. We analyzed the δ2H and δ18O values of xylem water for both tree and shrub species to assess how shrub cover affects the water-uptake patterns of conifers and whether there is niche partitioning between trees and shrubs. We found that growing near shrubs did not have a significant effect on the water source dynamics of either tree species, with similar source water contributions calculated for conifers growing in both the presence and absence of shrubs. Using a tree-ring analysis of growth and δ13C from 2016 to 2021, a period of high precipitation variability, we found that shrub cover had a positive effect on tree growth while decreasing carbon discrimination, which may be due to increased nitrogen availability from Ceanothus cordulatus. Overall, our results suggest that growing in the presence of shrubs does not alter the water uptake patterns of white fir and Jeffrey pine and instead may have a positive effect on the growth rates of these species during both wet and dry years. Birds contribute to the trophic interactions within mixed conifer ecosystems and provide a suite of services, such as nutrient transport, seed dispersal, habitat creation, and insect regulation. Avian communities vary in response to the structure and composition of their habitat, which may be drastically altered by fire, the predominant disturbance of western mixed conifer forests. We conducted avian point count surveys during the peak breeding season, five years post-fire, across four burn severities (unburned, low, moderate, and high) within the 416 Fire perimeter, a 55,000-acre mixed-severity fire that burned near Durango, Colorado in 2018. Avian communities in each burn severity were evaluated for richness, diversity, differentiation, indicator species, and functional guild composition. Species assemblages were significantly different across all burn severities, excluding the low to moderate areas comparison, with differentiation driven by live tree and snag density. Avian species' richness and diversity were not significantly different across burn severities, highlighting the importance of utilizing multivariate community analysis. Unburned and high-burn areas had significant variation in functional guilds and numerous indicator species. This study provides evidence of avian community differentiation by burn severity, suggesting that management practices promoting heterogenous stand structure in warm–dry mixed conifer will positively influence avian biodiversity. Gremmenia abietis (Dearn.) Crous (syn: Phacidium abietis) was originally described in North America to accommodate the species associated with snow blight of Abies and Pseudotsuga spp. In Japan, this species was first observed on the dead needles on Abies sachalinensis and Picea jezoensis var. jezoensis in 1969. However, the identity of Japanese species was unclear due to the lack of molecular data and the absence of anamorph description. In this study, we collected fresh specimens from various conifer species (A. sachalinensis, A. veitchii, Pic. jezoensis var. jezoensis, Pic. jezoensis var. hondoensis, Pinus koraiensis, and Pin. pumila) in Japan and revised the taxonomy based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS), nuc 28S rDNA (28S), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) regions indicated that the species belongs to Phacidiaceae. Conidiomata formed in vitro produced pyriform, hyaline conidia without mucoid appendage, which distinguished the species from phylogenetically related genera. Consequently, we established Chionobium takahashii to accommodate the snow blight fungus in Japan. Further phylogenetic analyses also indicated that C. takahashii includes several distinct clades corresponding to the host genera (Abies, Picea, Pinus). Morphological differences among those clades were unclear, suggesting that C. takahashii may contain host-specific cryptic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aims: Coordination between leaf and root traits is crucial to plant performance and ecosystem functioning, but how leaves and roots coordinate in ectomycorrhizal (ECM)-dominated alpine forests remains unclear. Therefore, the covariation patterns of leaf and root traits of ECM-dominated alpine conifers and the environmental drivers were examined. Methods: Five pairs of key leaf (i.e., leaf thickness [LT], specific leaf area [SLA], leaf tissue density [LTD], leaf N and P concentrations) and fine-root traits (i.e., root diameter [RD], specific root length [SRL], root tissue density [RTD], root N and P concentrations) were measured across 49 alpine coniferous populations (including 8 coniferous species) on the Tibetan Plateau. Results: Root traits including RTD, root N and P concentrations and leaf traits such as LT, SLA, LTD, leaf N and P concentrations were correlated. The root-leaf relationships represent a tradeoff between resource conservation and fast plant growth, i.e., plant economic spectrum. RD and SRL were independent from the plant economic spectrum. Temperature drove variations in the leaf traits, RTD, root N and P concentrations, and conifers under low temperature had denser leaves and roots (i.e., larger LT, LTD, RTD) and lower nutrient contents. Precipitation primarily controlled variations in RD and SRL, and roots became thinner with decreasing precipitation. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates divergent roles of temperature and precipitation in driving the coordination of leaf and root economic traits in the ECM-dominated alpine coniferous ecosystems. Premise of research. The southern conifer family Podocarpaceae inhabits wet environments and is highly diverse in its vegetative and megasporangiate structures. The Podocarpaceae are today divided into a tropical clade and a prumnopityoid clade. We study the morphology and anatomy of leaves and megasporangiate cones at postpollination and the maturity of two native Patagonian Podocarpaceae, Saxegothaea conspicua (tropical clade) and Lepidothamnus fonkii (prumnopityoid clade). We aim to add to the knowledge of the South American Podocarpaceae and to interpret their unique morphologies to aid in our understanding of the deep and cryptic fossil record of the family and its relationships with other conifer families. Methodology. Specimens of S. conspicua and L. fonkii were collected in natural and cultivated populations of southern Chile and imaged using different macro- and microscopic techniques, including epifluorescence, bright-field, and scanning electron microscopy. Pivotal results. Leaf and megasporangiate cone anatomy and morphology are described in detail for both species. For S. conspicua , we observed a helical to slightly planate leaf arrangement with leaf reorientation, expanded leaves without accessory transfusion tissue, an apparent lack of vascularization of the epimatium (which is bikeeled and does not surround the ovule completely), and nonsaccate pollen germinating on the bract toward the protruding nucellus. For L. fonkii , we observed the absence of leaf hypodermis and resin canals, the presence of a micropylar hook in the ovule and seed integument, bisaccate pollen germinating within the ovule, cone bracts reduced in number and size, and a basal receptacle-like structure. Conclusions. Leaf arrangement in Saxegothaea shows an intermediate condition between the primary helical phyllotaxis common in the family and the secondary planate arrangement seen in most podocarps with expanded leaves. Lepidothamnus fonkii was determined to have a false receptacle (i.e., a receptacle-like structure originated from vegetative basal bracts rather than by sterile ovuliferous complexes). Key message: In Araucaria angustifolia, the seed scale is part of the ovule, the female gametophyte presents a monosporic origin and arises from a coenocytic tetrad, and the pollen tube presents a single axis. The seed cone of conifers has many informative features, and its ontogenetic data may help interpret relationships among function, development patterns, and homology among seed plants. We reported the seed cone development, from pollination to pre-fertilization, including seed scale, ovule ontogeny, and pollen tube growth in Araucaria angustifolia. The study was performed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT). During the pollination period, the ovule arises right after the seed scale has emerged. From that event to the pre-fertilization period takes about 14 months. Megasporogenesis occurs three weeks after ovule formation, producing a coenocytic tetrad. At the same time as the female gametophyte's first nuclear division begins, the pollen tube grows through the seed scale adaxial face. Until maturity, the megagametophyte goes through the free nuclei stage, cellularization stage, and cellular growth stage. Along its development, many pollen tubes develop in the nucellar tissue extending straight toward the female gametophyte. Our observations show that the seed scale came out of the same primordia of the ovule, agreeing with past studies that this structure is part of the ovule itself. The formation of a female gametophyte with a monosporic origin that arises from a coenocytic tetrad was described for the first time in conifers, and the three-dimensional reconstruction of the ovule revealed the presence of pollen tubes with only one axis and no branches, highlighting a new pattern of pollen tube growth in Araucariaceae. The ectomycorrhizal (EcM) roots of Cedrus deodara associated with a unique hypogeous EcM fungus—Rhizopogon himalayensis is meticulously characterized and comprehensively described based on well‐established standard morphological and anatomical features. The mycobiont—R. himalayensis was found organically associated with the roots of C. deodara. The EcM morphotypes are distinguished by differences in the shape and color of the roots, type of ramification, surface texture, type of mantle, as well as different chemical reactions. All the examined morphotypes were having similar mycorrhizal system and anatomically (Mantle and Hartig net) no disparities were seen, that is, nonsignificant (p > 0.05) variations were observed. The majority of mycorrhizal systems were irregularly pinnate, dichotomous type with 0–1 order of ramification and occasional coralloid type. Mantle surface was densely cottony to loosely wooly. The outer and inner mantles were H & Q type. Hartig net was a complex net‐like structure with uniseriate to mutiseriate type of hyphal cell arrangement. Rhizomorph were smooth and round, consistently growing along roots. Moreover, extraradical hyphae were hyaline, septate, and without clamp connections. Sclerotia and cystidia were absent. Our findings will contribute to the biology of ectomycorrhizae associated with primitive and economically valuable conifers, thriving in the face of shifting environmental conditions in the northwestern Himalayas. Since the mid 1990s, partial cuts have been widely used in yellow birch--conifer stands (BJR, bétulaies jaunes résineuses) in the temperate forests of Québec. We studied the impact of residual basal area on stand composition and on the time required to reconstitute enough merchantable basal area to allow for a second partial cut, according to the usual standards of forest management in Québec. To do so, we used a dataset from 9 experiments as well as simulations of the Artémis-2014 growth model and those of a new model, BJR, which we calibrated using the study data. Our results show that residual basal area influences stand periodic annual increment, which peaks 10 to 15 years after the cut. Residual basal area also influences the length of the cutting cycle and future stand composition. We estimated a mean cutting cycle of 24 years for a mean residual basal area of 18 m²⋅ha-1, and of 40 years for a mean residual basal area of 14 m²⋅ha-1. For the latter, our results also show that some opportunistic species of lesser commercial value, such as red maple, could become more abundant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IntroductionUnderstanding the adaptive capacity to current climate change of drought-sensitive tree species is mandatory, given their limited prospect of migration and adaptation as long-lived, sessile organisms. Knowledge about the molecular and eco-physiological mechanisms that control drought resilience is thus key, since water shortage appears as one of the main abiotic factors threatening forests ecosystems. However, our current background is scarce, especially in conifers, due to their huge and complex genomes.MethodsHere we investigated the eco-physiological and transcriptomic basis of drought response of the climate change-threatened conifer Cedrus atlantica. We studied C. atlantica seedlings from two locations with contrasting drought conditions to investigate a local adaptation. Seedlings were subjected to experimental drought conditions, and were monitored at immediate (24 hours) and extended (20 days) times. In addition, post-drought recovery was investigated, depicting two contrasting responses in both locations (drought resilient and non-resilient). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were also studied to characterize the genomic basis of drought resilience and investigate a rapid local adaptation of C. atlantica.ResultsDe novo transcriptome assembly was performed for the first time in this species, providing differences in gene expression between the immediate and extended treatments, as well as among the post-drought recovery phenotypes. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis showed a regulation of stomatal closing and photosynthetic activity during the immediate drought, consistent with an isohydric dynamic. During the extended drought, growth and flavonoid biosynthesis inhibition mechanisms prevailed, probably to increase root-to-shoot ratio and to limit the energy-intensive biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Drought sensitive individuals failed in metabolism and photosynthesis regulation under drought stress, and in limiting secondary metabolite production. Moreover, genomic differences (SNPs) were found between drought resilient and sensitive seedlings, and between the two studied locations, which were mostly related to transposable elements.DiscussionThis work provides novel insights into the transcriptomic basis of drought response of C. atlantica, a set of candidate genes mechanistically involved in its drought sensitivity and evidence of a rapid local adaptation. Our results may help guide conservation programs for this threatened conifer, contribute to advance drought-resilience research and shed light on trees' adaptive potential to current climate change.

Summary: Ontogenetic shape change has long been recognized to be important in generating patterns of morphological diversity and may be especially important in plant reproductive structures. We explore how seed cone disparity in Cupressaceae changes over ontogeny by comparing pollination‐stage and mature cones.We sampled cones at pollen and seed release and measured cone scales using basic morphometric shape variables. We used multivariate statistical methods, particularly hypervolume overlap calculations, to measure morphospace occupation and disparity.Cone scales at both pollination and maturity exhibit substantial variability, although the disparity is greater at maturity. Mature cone scales are also more clustered in trait space, showing less overlap with other taxa than at pollination. These patterns reflect two growth strategies that generate closed cones over maturation, either through thin laminar scales or relatively thick, peltate scales, resulting in two distinct regions of morphospace occupation.Disparity patterns in Cupressaceae seed cones change over ontogeny, reflecting shifting functional demands that require specific patterns of cone scale growth. The evolution of Cupressaceae reproductive disparity therefore represents selection for trajectories of ontogenetic shape change, a phenomenon that should be widespread across seed plants. Forests provide irreplaceable ecosystem services for human society and prevent environmental degradation but climate change has substantially undermined these fundamental functions. It is therefore important to examine the responses and adaptation of different tree species to climate warming. Here, we investigated how climate warming has affected tree growth patterns and growth-climate responses of a conifer (Pinus tabuliformis) and two broad-leaved species (Populus davidiana and Betula platyphylla) in a temperate semi-arid region in the northern China. Our results showed that P. tabuliformis had a similar regional growth pattern and two broad-leaved species shared an interspecific growth similarity at the same site. Broad-leaved trees had a higher recovery and resilience to drought than the conifer while conifers were more resistant to drought compared to broad-leaved trees, indicating a faster drought-response of broad-leaved species than that of conifers. The warming climate has hindered the tree growth by exacerbating water-deficit, and in particular, water availability has become the limiting factor for the growth of pines in the area. Trees coped with the water-deficit by taking advantage of non-growing season water to compensate the water source for tree growth. The study not only revealed the differences of growth-climate responses between species but also highlighted the necessity to consider species-specific adaptation to climate warming and diversify forest management strategies. Conifer trees (Noble-fir) were used to study the vegetative combustion process under an applied wind field. Three ignition methods were considered. First, a special T-shaped propane burner was used. The second ignition method considered the use of firebrand showers impinging onto the trees. The third method was to use one tree to ignite another tree. Temporally resolved mass loss profiles, as well as firebrand distributions were determined. Results are presented for individual conifer trees combusting under an applied wind field. Additional experiments that made use of up to two trees per experiment were used to observe fire spread processes from tree to tree. Red Crossbills (Fringillidae: Loxia curvirostra) are finches specialized to pry open cones and extract seeds of coniferous trees. Within the species, variable bill morphology may provide more efficient foraging on some species of conifers than others. Subgroups also have distinctly different contact calls often given in flight (hereafter, call types). Variable morphology and discrete call types suggest the existence of distinct evolutionary lineages. Because coniferous trees produce seeds on irregular and unpredictable schedules, crossbills wander widely in search of food. The key conifer hypothesis suggests that each call type diverged by specializing on a single conifer species to maximize foraging efficiency, while other hypotheses have emphasized geographic isolation as a driver of lineage divergence. To quantify the degree to which call types occur with specific conifer species, we surveyed Red Crossbills in five ecoregions of western and central Oregon, USA, an area with high conifer diversity. Two of five call types (Types 5 and 10) were encountered in only one ecoregion and associated with their hypothesized key conifers. Three others (Types 2, 3, and 4) were found to wander widely and did not exclusively align geographically with their presumed key conifer species. Whereas types 2 and 3 were sometimes associated with their proposed key conifers, they wandered widely during our 2-year study and occurred with a wide variety of conifers. Type 4 was not significantly associated with its key conifer and also wandered widely during our study. Relationships of call types with key conifers were weaker in the winter and spring, when Types 3 and 4 were frequently encountered in hard-coned pines rather than their soft-coned key conifer species. In our study area, the key conifer hypothesis was strongly supported only for call type 10 as that call type was not encountered away from the coastal range of Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis). We found mixed support for the key conifer hypothesis based on our measure of geographic associations of crossbills with a diverse array of coniferous tree species. Giant sequoia groves, located on the western slope of the central and southern Sierra Nevada mountains in California, USA, have been experiencing regeneration failure for more than a century due to the exclusion of wildfires. Giant sequoias are serotinous conifers and have evolved a strong relationship between high-severity fire and reproduction. While this relationship is widely recognized, only one previous peer-reviewed study has directly investigated giant sequoia reproduction and fire severity, and that study used different fires for each severity class. We conducted a study of giant sequoia reproduction and fire severity in a single fire, the KNP Complex fire of 2021, within the Redwood Mountain Grove in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. We found that giant sequoia seedlings are more dominant relative to other conifer species and are growing faster in a large high-severity fire area than in adjacent low/moderate-severity areas. Distance to the nearest live sequoia seed source was not a significant factor in sequoia seedling density. Our results call into question the basis for widespread plans and projects designed to prevent high-severity fires and should reevaluate moving forward with proposed tree planting activities in high-severity fire areas within giant sequoia groves. Needle diseases caused by pathogens within Rhytismataceae are increasing in frequency globally where pines are either a predominate species or are grown commercially, and yet remain poorly understood. Here, we provide background information on the current knowledge and management strategies of needle pathogens in the Rhytismataceae and discuss research opportunities using molecular tools to fill knowledge gaps. Many of the aggressive needle pathogens within this group lack morphological features to delimit species and are difficult to grow in axenic cultures, which complicates scientific investigations. Molecular research has greatly advanced knowledge of this unique group of pathogens. Nucleotide sequences from multiple gene loci identified greater diversity within this group of pathogens than previously thought, as new and cryptic species are being discovered in broader geographic regions. High throughput sequencing and analyses revealed that an endophytic lifestyle is a common trait among fastidious if not obligate needle pathogens within Rhytismataceae. Further, molecular analyses showed the impact these pathogens have on the diversity of endophytic microbiota is underestimated. Early detection in healthy‐looking needles using PCR‐based markers greatly improves capabilities for disease diagnosis and monitoring. Despite growing number of molecular studies on Rhytismataceae needle pathogens, fundamental questions on the taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology and pathology of many Rhytismataceae needle pathogens remain unanswered. Nonetheless, with the projected changes in the occurrence and severity of Rhytismataceae pathogens, increased accessibility to molecular tools vastly expands the potential to gain more insights into understudied needle pathosystems to help define and address its impact under changing environments and consequently inform forest disease management more effectively. Global climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme droughts. Researching tree growth responses to drought helps assess the potential of forest adaptation and ecological stability under changing climate conditions. Here, we investigated tree growth resilience components (resistance, recovery, and resilience) to extreme drought events of two mainly distributed species, Pinus tabulaeformis and Picea wilsonii, on the Gannan Plateau, the Eastern Tibetan Plateau. Tree-ring width data from 510 trees at 20 plots along the elevation gradients were employed to analyze the tree resilience components at the individual tree level. The results showed that P. tabulaeformis had a lower growth resistance and a higher recovery capacity to drought than P. wilsonii, which might be related to the different strategies for combating drought of the two species. In addition, the tree growth response of P. tabulaeformis to drought changed significantly along the elevation gradient due to its higher drought sensitivity than that of P. wilsonii. Overall, the long-term correlation between tree growth and drought index, tree size, and soil water content had implications for tree growth resistance, recovery, and resilience. Given the observed differences in tree growth resistance to drought among different species and environmental conditions, a well-thought-out and tailored strategy would better support forest management on the Gannan Plateau. As wildfire becomes increasingly frequent, many serotinous plant populations risk local extirpation if fire recurs prior to sufficient seed accumulation in the canopy (i.e., "immaturity risk"). Following two 2018 wildfires in northwestern California, we studied seed viability, cone production, and postfire regeneration of a serotinous conifer, knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata), with stand ages (time since fire) ranging from 6 to 79 years. Cone density per tree was more strongly associated with tree diameter than age, and cone density was positively related to postfire seedling regeneration. Most of the postfire knobcone pine regeneration established during the first year with high survivorship in the following first postfire year. Adjusting for survivorship, the estimated minimum age for knobcone pine to promote self‐replacement (one recruit per tree) was 9.5 years (or 4.6‐cm dbh) and the probability of reburning at the modern fire rotation of 43 years was 19.8%. Based on our results, we found that immaturity risk was currently low for knobcone pine. Our approach provides a quantitative method to assess immaturity risk in knobcone pine and other serotinous conifer species that can be used to evaluate future risk under rapidly changing climate and fire conditions. For decades, researchers have held that wood specific gravity was an indicator or surrogate for both shade tolerance and successional status. However, recent research in dry tropical forests has shown very different associations regarding wood specific gravity. Past analyses of the tolerance and wood properties of tree species have focused on pooled coniferous and angiosperm species in temperate regions; fewer analyses have been conducted separately for conifers and angiosperm species. A database was compiled for the wood properties and/or tolerance scores of 542 temperate Northern Hemisphere conifer and angiosperm trees. Plant strategy was defined by shade tolerance (Tshade), drought tolerance (Tdrought), and polytolerance (Tpoly = Tshade + Tdrought) and fundamental wood properties were represented by basic specific gravity (SGbasic), relative stiffness (MOE/SGbasic), and relative strength (MOR/SGbasic). Simple linear regressions tested the significance (p <.05) of correlations between plant strategy and wood properties. Conifers, unlike angiosperm trees, showed a negative correlation between Tshade and SGbasic and a positive correlation between Tshade and both MOE/SGbasic and MOR/SGbasic. Only angiosperm trees had a significant correlation between Tpoly and both SGbasic and MOE/SGbasic, but both conifers and angiosperm trees had a significant correlation between Tdrought and both SGbasic and MOE/SGbasic. Shade tolerance, as a plant strategy, has functional implications for wood properties in temperate Northern Hemisphere conifers but not in associated angiosperms. The implied functional link between wood properties (SGbasic) and shade tolerance hypothetically extends to other fitness‐enhancing traits impacted by SGbasic, such as growth rates and species maximum height. The Altai Mountains, located in the northwesternmost part of China, have a harsh climate and little human activity, making it an excellent location to study forest ecology undisturbed by human interference. The forest is frequently struck by lightning and experiences long-term natural fire disturbances, leading to the evolution of unique fire adaptation traits in the major conifer species. To explore the role of natural fire disturbances in the Altai Mountain forest ecosystem, we conducted a study on the fire adaptation traits of Larix sibirica, Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, and Abies sibirica, and reconstructed the fire history of the forest area over the past 100 years. We investigated three representative forest areas with varying fire disturbance conditions and habitats in the Altai Mountains. Data on fire disturbance conditions, relative air humidity, and species composition were collected in these areas. Basal diameter to diameter at breast height, relative bark thickness, and under-crown heights were measured and counted for each of the four species, and litter, bark, and wood layers were sampled and analyzed for physicochemical properties (ash, fat, and higher heating value) for each of the four species in the plots examined. We conducted a count of the four conifer species in the forest for each fire adaptation index and analyzed the differences in fire adaptation traits among the species. Larix sibirica showed fire-tolerant traits, Pinus sibirica displayed fire-embracer traits, and Picea obovata and Abies sibirica exhibited fire-avoider traits. Through the analysis of stand composition and exposure to fire disturbance in the different forest areas, we were able to correlate the fire-adaptive strategies of the four conifers with stand characteristics under varying fire disturbances and habitats. The development of the tree ring is a process occurring under limitations caused by a complex of environmental factors and intrinsic regulatory mechanisms. Its understanding is of interest in many scientific fields, but most quantitative models trying to describe its details meet several issues stemming from the difficulty of its verification. This study attempted to combine several observational and modeling approaches to verify intermediate details of the description of xylogenesis, aiming to restore the tree-ring seasonal growth kinetics on the basis of dendrochronological and wood anatomical data. It was carried out for Scots pine in two semiarid habitats in South Siberia. The Vaganov-Shashkin model was used jointly with tree-ring width chronology and climatic data to model the tree radial growth rate with daily precision. The Band-model was then used to calculate the kinetics of tracheid production from the growth rate and actual final number of cells per radial file in the ring. Seasonal observations of cell population and final measurements of cell sizes were used to fit model parameters and verify the numbers of developing tracheids produced by the Band-model. The patterns of modeled seasonal kinetics for six seasons and two sites were found to repeat the actual drought-derived deviations in tree growth and observations (R2 = 0.70–0.84). Further research is required to test other climatic limitations and species-specific ecophysiological mechanisms of growth regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: The study found that higher winter temperatures lead to an increase in respiratory carbon loss in Norway spruce and silver fir seedlings. The growth of Norway spruce negatively correlated with winter temperature, but we observed no effect for silver fir. Climate change is significantly altering the carbon sequestration potential of European forest ecosystems. Elevated winter temperatures at high latitudes can have a negative impact on the carbon balance and subsequent growth of evergreen trees. This study aimed to test the hypothesis of a negative impact of elevated winter temperature on winter respiration, carbon balance and growth of evergreen coniferous trees in Denmark. Seedlings of Abies alba and Picea abies were exposed to elevated temperatures (2–8 °C increase) for one month during the winter of 2020 using outdoor infrared heaters and greenhouses. Both species showed a significant increase in respiration under higher temperatures, possibly negatively affecting their total leaf carbon balance. Dark respiration increased by 15–16% per 1 °C increase in the monthly average temperature for both species. Neither Abies alba nor Picea abies showed downregulation of dark respiration under prolonged elevated temperatures. Radial and height growth in the following season was negatively correlated with winter temperature treatment for Picea abies, but not for Abies alba. Unfortunately, the Picea abies seedlings were attacked by aphids which could affect the growth as well. Further research focused on the impact of winter warming on carbohydrate reserves is needed to fully understand why warming winters negatively affect the growth of some evergreen conifers, but not others. Cryopreservation, or the storage at liquid nitrogen temperatures (-196°C), of embryogenic cells or somatic embryos allows their long-term conservation without loss of their embryogenic capacity. During the last decade, protocols for cryopreservation of embryogenic material of woody species have been increasing in number and importance. However, despite the large experimental evidence proved in thousands of embryogenic lines, the application for the large-scale conservation of embryogenic material in cryobanks is still limited. Cryopreservation facilitates the management of embryogenic lines, reducing costs and time spent on their maintenance, thus limiting the risk of the appearance of somaclonal variation or contamination. Somatic embryogenesis in combination with cryopreservation is especially useful to preserve the juvenility of lines while the corresponding clones are being field-tested. Hence, when tree performance has been evaluated, selected varieties can be propagated from the cryostock. The traditional method of slow cooling or techniques based on vitrification are mostly applied procedures. For example, slow cooling methods are widely applied to conserve embryogenic lines of conifers. Desiccation based procedures, although simpler, have been applied in a smaller number of species. Genetic stability of the cryopreserved material is supported by multiloci PCR-derived markers in most of the assayed species, whereas DNA methylation status assays showed that cryopreservation might induce some changes that were also observed after prolonged subculture of the embryogenic lines. This article reviews the cryopreservation of embryogenic cultures in conifers, fruit species, deciduous forest species and palms, including a description of the different cryopreservation procedures and the analysis of their genetic stability after storage in liquid nitrogen. A comparative assessment of bud and wood phenology could aid a better understanding of tree growth dynamics. However, the reason for asynchronism or synchronism in leaf and cambial phenology remains unclear. To test the assumption that the temporal relationship between the budburst date and the onset date of wood formation is due to their common or different responses to environmental factors, we constructed a wood phenology dataset from previous literature, and compared it with an existing bud phenology dataset in Europe. We selected three common conifers (Larix decidua Mill. Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L.) in both datasets and analyzed 909 records of the onset of wood formation at 47 sites and 238,720 records of budburst date at 3051 sites. We quantified chilling accumulation (CA) and forcing requirement (FR) of budburst and onset of wood formation based on common measures of CA and FR. We then constructed negative exponential CA–FR curves for bud and wood phenology separately. The results showed that the median, variance and probability distribution of CA–FR curves varied significantly between bud and wood phenology for three conifers. The different FR under the same chilling condition caused asynchronous bud and wood phenology. Furthermore, the CA–FR curves manifested that wood phenology was more sensitive to chilling than bud phenology. Thus, the FR of the onset of wood formation increases more than that of budburst under the same warming scenarios, explaining the stronger earlier trends in the budburst date than the onset date of woody formation simulated by the process-based model. Our work not only provides a possible explanation for asynchronous bud and wood phenology from the perspective of organ-specific responses to chilling and forcing, but also develops a phenological model for predicting both bud and wood phenology with acceptable uncertainties. Climate change and disturbance are altering forests and the rates and locations of tree regeneration. In semi-arid forests of the southwestern USA, limitations imposed by hot and dry conditions are likely to influence seedling survival. We examined how the survival of 1-year seedlings of five southwestern US conifer species whose southwestern distributions range from warmer and drier woodlands and forests (Pinus edulis Engelm. Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex C. Lawson) to cooler and wetter subalpine forests (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco , Abies concolor (Gord. & Glend.) Lindl. Ex Hildebr. and Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm.) changed in response to low moisture availability, high temperatures and high vapor pressure deficit in incubators. We used a Bayesian framework to construct discrete-time proportional hazard models that explained 55–75% of the species-specific survival variability. We applied these to the recent climate (1980–2019) of the southwestern USA as well as 1980–2099 CMIP5 climate projections with the RCP8.5 emissions pathway. We found that the more mesic species (i.e. P. menziesii , A. concolor and P. engelmannii) were more susceptible to the effects of hot and dry periods. However, their existing ranges are not projected to experience the conditions we tested as early in the 21st century as the more xeric P. edulis and P. ponderosa , leading to lower percentages of their existing ranges predicted to experience seedling-killing conditions. By late-century, extensive areas of each species southwestern range could experience climate conditions that increase the likelihood of seedling mortality. These results demonstrate that empirically derived physiological limitations can be used to inform where species composition or vegetation type change are likely to occur in the southwestern USA. Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) has received limited attention in terms of genetic research. However, genomic techniques hold promise for decoding the stone pine genome and contributing to developing a more resilient bioeconomy. Retrotransposon and specific genetic markers are effective tools for determining population-specific genomic diversity. Studies on the transcriptome and proteome have identified differentially expressed genes PAS1, CLV1, ATAF1, and ACBF involved in shoot bud formation. The stone pine proteome shows variation among populations and shows the industrial potential of the enzyme pinosylvin. Microsatellite studies have revealed low levels of polymorphism and a unique genetic diversity in stone pine, which may contribute to its environmental adaptation. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses uncover the genetic and molecular responses of stone pine to fungal infections and nematode infestations, elucidating the defense activation, gene regulation, and the potential role of terpenes in pathogen resistance. Transcriptomics associated with carbohydrate metabolism, dehydrins, and transcription factors show promise as targets for improving stone pine's drought stress response and water retention capabilities. Stone pine presents itself as an important model tree for studying climate change adaptation due to its characteristics. Fire is a disturbance that serves to maintain the diverse mosaic of vegetation in the Eastern Deciduous Forest. However, our ability to reconstruct fire occurrence from hardwood tree scars still lags far behind our expertise in reconstructing fire history from conifers in the western United States. This study examines the fidelity of fire scaring in multiple tree species in the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Indiana, which is located in the central hardwood region of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. All 15 species, except for red oak, showed evidence of past fires, and most samples recorded multiple fire events. No fire scars were recorded in the latewood of the samples. Most of the fires scars occurred in the earlywood (May) suggesting the dormant season fires are likely associated with fires in March to April before the growing season begins. No synchronous fires were recorded across all sites, but fires occurred in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1988 across multiple sites. This suggests that these were larger spreading fires. Establishment pulses were documented in association with fire events in 1981, 1984, and 1995, suggesting that fire may benefit the establishment or root sprouting of some hardwood species. Fourteen of the fifteen species that we sampled preserved fire scars, suggesting that the diverse suite of species in the Eastern Deciduous Forest is a viable sampling pool for examining fire history across this forest type. Forest damage caused by heavy wet snow accumulation in the canopy is the second most important abiotic forest disturbance agent in Nordic conifer stands after wind. The extent and frequency of snow damage in the future climate in the Nordic region is a major uncertainty. Few mechanistic models of snow damage risk to trees exist that could support forest management scenario analysis and decision making. We propose a snow damage risk model consisting of a numerical weather prediction-based snow accumulation model for forest canopies and a mechanistic critical snow load model. Snow damage probability predictions were validated on snow breakage data from the winters of 2016 and 2018 covering 3.5 million individual trees in south-eastern Norway derived from pre- and post-damage aerial laser scanning campaigns. The proposed model demonstrated satisfactory damage and no-damage class separation with an AUC of 0.72 and 0.77 in Norway spruce and Scots pine, respectively, and an F1 score of 0.7 in conifers taller than 10 m that suffered moderate stem breakage. This study examines 10 different taxa within the genus Abies identified in the circum-Mediterranean area: A. alba, A. borisii-regis, A. cephalonica, A. cilicica, A. nebrodensis, A. nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani, A. nordmanniana subsp. nordmanniana, A. numidica, A. pinsapo var. marocana and A. pinsapo var. pinsapo. We assess the potential distribution of these species in the Mediterranean Basin, most of Central-Northern Europe and Asia Minor through analysis of 8 bioclimatic variables. First, the potential distribution (suitability area) was calculated with Biomod2 package for R using 10 algorithms. Models were ensembled for the present period and then projected into two climate change scenarios (an intermediate and the most extreme) within two time slices (2041–2060 and 2081–2100) and two Global Circulation Models (GCMs). The analysis showed an increase in total suitable area under both forecasted scenarios. Abies spp. appeared to be resilient against climate change, showing a latitudinal and longitudinal migration trend in response to the loss of current habitats. A proposal of assisted migration (managed relocation) is suggested as an interesting alternative to guarantee the preservation of the most endangered species by promoting the establishment of new populations outside of their historical distribution area. Pinus peuce (Macedonian pine) is considered a valuable ornamental tree that is frequently planted in parks and gardens, especially in Western Europe. This endemic pine is one of the most valuable conifer species in its native range, which currently consists of only two disjunct populations restricted to small mountainous areas of the Balkans and is listed as a near-threatened species. The reproduction of Macedonian pine by seed is limited, so in vitro propagation methods have emerged as a promising tool for large-scale propagation. The objective of this study was to develop an improved system for the micropropagation of P. peuce from juvenile plant material using a short-term liquid cytokinin pulse. For that, explants derived from 4-week-old seedlings were pulse-treated with different concentrations of N6-benzyladenine (BA) for 1 or 2 h to stimulate the induction of axillary buds. The highest axillary shoot formation was achieved with 222 µM BA pulse treatment, with an average number of ~six shoots per explant. Elongated shoots (≥10 mm) were detached from the explants and pulse-treated with 0.27 or 1.08 mM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or 0.25 or 0.98 mM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) for 1 or 2 h. IBA was more effective than NAA and led to a maximum rooting percentage (up to 40%) and the highest number of acclimatized plants (15–20%). Sap flow is one of the most important physiological water transport processes of trees, and the characteristics of sap flow are greatly affected by the spatial and temporal distribution of water in the SPAC (soil–plant–atmosphere continuum). However, different precipitation characteristics have great influence on the water environment of forest trees, which causes considerable differences in sap flow. Therefore, researching the response of sap flow to precipitation type is the key to accurately determining plant transpiration in semi-arid areas. We used K-means clustering analysis to divide the rainfall during the study period into three rainfall types (the highest rainfall amount and intensity (types I), medium rainfall amount and intensity, with a long duration (types II); and the lowest rainfall amount and intensity (types III)) based on the rainfall amount and intensity in order to compare the differences in the response of sap flow trends and influencing factors of Pinus tabulaeformis and Robinia pseudoacacia under different rainfall types. The results showed that, under the daily scale average sap flow of P. tabulaeformis and R. pseudoacacia, rainfall type II decreased significantly relatively to rainfall types I and III (p < 0.05). In rainfall type II, The sap flow characteristics of R. pseudoacacia were positively correlated with solar radiation (p < 0.05), while those of P. tabulaeformis were positively correlated with temperature, solar radiation, and VPD (p < 0.01). The sap flow of P. tabulaeformis and R. pseudoacacia were significantly positively correlated with temperature, solar radiation, VPD, and soil moisture content (p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with relative humidity (p < 0.05) in rainfall type III. The hourly sap flow of P. tabulaeformis and R. pseudoacacia on rainfall days was higher than before the rainfall. Rainfall type I promoted the daily sap flow of both species, and the proportion of the sap flow in daytime was also higher. On rainy days, the sap flow rates of rainfall type I and III showed a "midday depression". In type I rainfall events, the sap flow "midday depression" after rainfall occurred an hour ahead compared to the sap flow "midday depression" before rainfall. In type II rainfall events, the daytime sap flow rates of P. tabulaeformis and R. pseudoacacia were obviously inhibited, but the nighttime sap flow rate increased. In type III rainfall events, the sap flow before rainfall presented a unimodal curve versus time. The daily average sap flow of R. pseudoacacia was more susceptible to rainfall type II, while P. tabulaeformis was more susceptible to rainfall types I and III. The sap flow rate of R. pseudoacacia decreased on rainy days. The results show that the effects of different rainfall types on the sap flow trends of P. tabulaeformis and R. pseudoacacia were different. They revealed the responses of their sap flow trends to meteorological factors under different rainfall types, which provided basic data and theoretical support for further predicting the sap flow trends on rainy days, clarifying the effects of rainfall amount, rainfall duration, and rainfall intensity on sap flow trends and accurately estimating the transpiration water consumption of typical tree species in the sub-humid climate regions of China. Wood ash use, to raise pH and replace nutrients lost through forest harvesting, is well regulated in Scandinavia and Canada, but not yet in the UK. This experiment applied granulated wood ash from mixed tree thinnings to a lowland clay mineral soil at ~2.3 t ha−1 dose rate, after clearfell of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.). With brash (~56 t ha−1 dry weight) as N resource, a 4 × 4 matrix of ash only, ash + brash, brash only and control treatments were planted with oak seedlings (Quercus robur L.). Soil survey was undertaken before ash application and followed over 10 years. By year 2, self-sown grass was dominant in the control and ash plots, and birch (Betula pendula , Roth.) was present across all treatments by year 4. In year 10, oak height was 25–29 per cent greater in brash and ash + brash plots, with DBH increased >20 per cent over the controls. Birch DBH was greater by 30 per cent in brash plots but was over 50 per cent in the ash + brash plots. Foliar concentrations of Ca, K and P significantly increased with ash addition in both oak and birch, as Al, Mn, Fe and Cr decreased. Soil pH (CaCl2) was reduced in all treatments in year 2 likely due to nitrification, during organic matter and needle breakdown, but recovered 8 years later to be significantly highest in ash and ash + brash plots. Mg, K, Ca, Na, Ba and S concentrations were higher in ash plot soils, but soil organic matter, total carbon and total nitrogen declined due to mineralization and uptake by grass and trees. Wood ash addition did not significantly increase heavy metal concentrations in either soil or foliage. In the long term, wood ash aided soil recovery and promoted tree growth in combination with the brash – it could be beneficial for tree growth after thinning/coppicing on heavy mineral soils, with the prerequisite of an existing ground cover. For many conifer species in dry conifer forests of North America, seeds must be present for postfire regeneration to occur, suggesting that seed dispersal from surviving trees plays a critical role in postfire forest recovery. However, the application of tree fecundity and spatial arrangement to postfire conifer recovery predictions have only recently become more common, and is often included at relatively coarse scales (i.e., 30 meters). In this study, we mapped surviving trees using lidar and created a spatially explicit estimate of seed density (seed shadows) with 10 m, 50 m, and 100 m median dispersal distances. We estimated the number of seeds produced by each tree using allometric relationships between tree size and fecundity. Along with the seed shadows, we used a suite of topographic variables as inputs to negative binomial hurdle models to predict conifer seedling abundance in 131 plots following the 2018 Carr Fire in northern California, USA. We compared models using each of the seed shadows to each other as well as to a model using the distance to the nearest surviving tree, which served as a baseline. All model formulations indicated that estimated seed availability was positively associated with conifer regeneration. Despite the importance of seed availability plays in regeneration and the substantial differences in seed availability represented by the different seed shadows in our analysis, we found surprisingly little difference in model performance regardless of which seed shadow was used. However, the models employing seed shadows outperformed the models with distance to the nearest live tree. Although we have demonstrated a modest improvement in predicting postfire conifer regeneration, the uncertainty in our results highlights the importance of tree detection and classification in future studies of this kind. Future studies may find it useful to consider other factors such as predation, site suitability, and seed mortality as potential drivers of discrepancies between total and realized dispersal kernels. The bark of coniferous trees was carbonized under the conditions of the high-temperature self-propagation synthesis process. It was shown by IR and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and electron microscopy that the carbonization product compares with the few-layer graphene, a 2D nanocarbon which a promising candidate for wide-scale application. Evidence was obtained in favor of the potential use of graphene nanoplates as a modifier for vulcanized butadiene-styrene rubbers.
