School psychology contributes to the science of human behavior and utilizes this science to inform an evidence-based practice. The usefulness of this science is dependent on scientists making good faith efforts to minimize bias in their research. Nonetheless, implicit biases can still influence scientists' decisions and, hence, the outcomes of their investigations. One source of such bias comes from conflicts of interest (COIs). In this article, we discuss COIs within the context of science, with a particular focus on financial COIs. In addition, we discuss how financial COIs can arise in school psychology as well as some ways the COIs may influence psychological science. We conclude by discussing how financial COIs are typically handled and some suggestions for handling them in the future.

The present study used quantitative and qualitative measures to examine Iranian applied linguists' (mis-) conceptions of ethical issues in research. For this purpose, one hundred and twelve applied linguists completed a research ethics questionnaire constructed and validated by the researchers. In the follow-up qualitative phase, 15 applied linguists who were faculty members participated in semi-instructed interviews. Data were analyzed using exploratory factors analyses for the first phase and theme analyses for the second phase. Quantitative results showed that the most important misconceptions among Iranian applied linguists lingered on working with data (data collection and data analyses). For example, removing an outlier was a prevalent act conducted by applied linguists in the present study. Teachers using their students as participants of their own research as well as how they treated those students after a study were other controversial issues. The qualitative results revealed several themes including "lack of knowledge, conflict with real-world practices, a product-oriented approach to education and a publish or perish mentality" as the reasons for misconceptions of ethics in applied linguistics among Iranian researchers. On general terms, there was an implicit agreement regarding the lack of training on research ethics among Iranian applied linguists.

Misinformation often continues to influence people's reasoning even after it has been corrected. Therefore, an important aim of applied cognition research is to identify effective measures to counter misinformation. One frequently recommended but hitherto insufficiently tested strategy is source discreditation, that is, attacking the credibility of a misinformation source. In two experiments, we tested whether immediate source discreditation could reduce people's subsequent reliance on fictional event-related misinformation. In Experiment 1, the discreditation targeted a person source of misinformation, pointing to a conflict of interest. This intervention was compared with a commonly employed message-focused correction and a combination of correction and discreditation. The discreditation alone was effective, but less effective than a correction, with the combination of both most effective. Experiment 2 compared discreditations that targeted a person versus a media source of misinformation, pointing either to a conflict of interest or a poor track record of communication. Discreditations were effective for both types of sources, although track-record discreditations were less effective when the misinformation source was a media outlet compared to a person. Results demonstrate that continued influence of misinformation is shaped by social as well as cognitive factors and that source discreditation is a broadly applicable misinformation countermeasure.

Through three years of training, school counselors build a professional identity based on providing social-emotional, academic, and postsecondary guidance to students. But school counselors face conflict in meeting these expectations in a bureaucratic environment that asks them to prioritize efficiency when meeting with students rather than building one-on-one relationships. I draw from interviews with high school counselors and school personnel and a year of observations to study the institutional logics that govern their work and use inhabited institutional theory to study how time scarcity shaped how counselors interpreted these conflicting macro-level logics in their micro-level interactions. The counselors in this study developed patterns of practice that helped them manage this conflict, negotiating but eventually settling with nonideal strategies in the best way they could with the resources made available to them. Efforts to reject the efficiency model were met with pushback from school leaders and unintended consequences for counselors and students alike. The conflict inherent in their work left little room for the mental health or postsecondary counseling they expect and are trained to provide.

School leadership was transformed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. In this crisis, principals organised schooling amidst extreme confusion and uncertainty. Using sensemaking theory to capture how leaders identified, interpreted, and acted on this novel situation, this longitudinal qualitative study describes how school leaders, in interaction with stakeholders, generated understanding during the pandemic. We draw particular attention to a set of actors -- parents -- who elevated their participation in education broadly and sensemaking specifically in ways that have yet to be explored in other educational research. We examine the active role parents played in shaping educational decisions, their interaction with school leadership, and the growing polarisation exacerbated by the deepening political crisis that frames the field of education more generally. Our findings highlight how school leaders and parents held competing beliefs about how schools should be organised, leading to a process of what we call "sensesplitting," the growth of two narratives emerging out of the same phenomena. This study offers important insight into how organisational sensemaking in education is increasingly shaped by parents, politics, and school leadership and the impact of this shift on leaders' decision-making.

Moral distress is experienced when one knows the right thing to do, but cannot do it because of institutional or external constraints. This study aimed to understand the extent to which moral distress affects a school leader's role, and the key sources of moral distress. Using a web-based survey (n = 954) and focus groups including school leaders, we found that the increasing complexity of classrooms places competing demands upon school leaders. Moral distress emerged from expectations from school district leaders and parents. This study introduces moral distress to educational research, and provides a conceptual lens for describing the moral dimension of challenges that school leaders face. Future scholarship is necessary to understand the impact of moral distress on school leaders as they strive to adapt to increasing demands from both their districts and their school communities.

This study aims to reveal the views of social studies teachers about polarization between states. In this study, in which the phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used, a semi-structured interview form was applied to 20 social studies teachers. While preparing the interview form, the opinions of 3 academicians who are experts in the field of social studies were taken. The reason for taking expert opinion is to increase the content validity of the research. While determining the study group of the research, convenient and easily accessible sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods, was used. Descriptive analysis was applied to the data obtained within the scope of the research. The reliability of the research was calculated as 94% according to the reliability formula of Miles and Huberman (1994) [Percent of Agreement = Consensus / (Agreement + Disagreement) x 100]. In the research, the answers given by the social studies teachers to the research questions were collected in 16 codes. At the end of the research, social studies teachers generally described the polarization between states as negative. In addition, social studies teachers emphasized that polarization between states has harmful effects on education, economy, environment and society.

The definitions and implementation of differentiated curricula and instruction for gifted and talented students have been affected by a myriad of philosophical and institutional factors defined by educators, community members, and gifted and talented students. The ramifications of these factors affect the focus and subsequent objectives and outcomes of differentiated curricula and instruction for gifted and talented students. A set of questions regarding the structure and implications of differentiated curricula and instruction for gifted and talented students are presented. Concepts such as specificity versus generalization, transfer of training, and conflict of interests are discussed and exemplified theoretically, philosophically, and pragmatically to respond to these questions.

The current system of ethical oversight in the United States is based on Institutional Review Board (IRB) review. The system was established in response to well-known and egregious mistreatment of subjects in both biomedical and social and behavioral research. In the decades since the research regulations were enacted, reaction to the burden of IRB oversight has led the system to focus on compliance and limit its active oversight disproportionately to studies that could present the risk of physical harm. At the same time, the characteristics of the research enterprise have changed and methodologies now present novel risks that were not envisioned in the regulations. We convened a group of IRB professionals, academic leaders, and others to discuss limitations of the current system, how that system could be changed to recognize evolving risks and an increasing focus on participant and community voice, and how it could better serve the needs of researchers and support the societal project of science as a public good. Recommendations included a call to reexamine the academic incentive structure, to develop a system to support consideration of ethical principles from the time of study design, and to explicitly provide different ethical support and oversight for high-risk interventional trials and lower risk biomedical and social behavioral research.

Marketing in schools has a new twist, and teachers are at the center. Corporate firms, particularly those producing education-technology products, have contracted with teachers to become so-called brand ambassadors and micro-influencers. Scant research, however, has examined these brand ambassador arrangements, leaving policymakers uninformed about the implications for students, teachers, and schools. In this article, we delve into what it means to be a teacher brand ambassador (TBA) and micro-influencer by examining the context in which these programs arose and studying current examples of TBA and TBA-like programs offered by Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft. We review how these recent instantiations of marketing compare to similar practices used to sell prescription drugs to and through doctors, and we explore ethical, legal and policy issues associated with the recruitment and contracting of teachers as brand ambassadors. Further, anticipating the need for the protection of students' and teachers' interests as TBA programs grow as a presence in public schools, we offer a model policy framework to regulate the use of these marketing practices in schools.

In the context of academic research, a diversity of ethical issues, conditioned by the different roles of members within these institutions, arise. Previous studies on this topic addressed mainly the perceptions of researchers. However, to our knowledge, no studies have explored the transversal ethical issues from a wider spectrum, including other members of academic institutions as the research ethics board (REB) members, and the research ethics experts. The present study used a descriptive phenomenological approach to document the ethical issues experienced by a heterogeneous group of Canadian researchers, REB members, and research ethics experts. Data collection involved socio-demographic questionnaires and individual semi-structured interviews. Following the triangulation of different perspectives (researchers, REB members and ethics experts), emerging ethical issues were synthesized in ten units of meaning: (1) research integrity, (2) conflicts of interest, (3) respect for research participants, (4) lack of supervision and power imbalances, (5) individualism and performance, (6) inadequate ethical guidance, (7) social injustices, (8) distributive injustices, (9) epistemic injustices, and (10) ethical distress. This study highlighted several problematic elements that can support the identification of future solutions to resolve transversal ethical issues in research that affect the heterogeneous members of the academic community.

In the last decade, there has been increased recognition of the importance of disclosing and managing non-financial conflicts of interests to safeguard the objectivity, integrity, and trustworthiness of scientific research. While funding agencies and academic institutions have had policies for addressing non-financial interests in grant peer review and research oversight since the 1990s, scientific journals have been only recently begun to develop such policies. An impediment to the formulation of effective journal policies is that non-financial interests can be difficult to recognize and define. Journals can overcome this problem by providing guidance concerning the types of non-financial interests that should be disclosed, including direct research interests, direct professional interests, expert testimony, involvement in litigation, holding a leadership position in a non-governmental organization, providing technical or scientific advice to a non-governmental organization, and personal or professional relationships. The guidance should apply to authors, editors, and reviewers.

Global university rankings influence students' choices and higher education policies throughout the world. When rankers not only evaluate universities but also provide them with consulting, analytics, or advertising services, rankers are vulnerable to conflicts of interest that may potentially distort their rankings. The paper assesses the impact of contracting with rankers on university ranking outcomes using a difference-in-difference research design. The study matches data on the positions of 28 Russian universities in QS World University Rankings between 2016 and 2021 with information on contracts these universities had for services from QS--the company that produces these rankings. The study compares the fluctuations in QS rankings with data obtained from the Times Higher Education rankings and data recorded by national statistics. The results suggest that the universities with frequent QS-related contracts had an increase of 0.75 standard deviations (~ 140 positions) in QS World University Rankings and an increase of 0.9 standard deviations in reported QS faculty-student ratio scores over 5 years, regardless of changes in the institutional characteristics. The observed distortions could be explained by university rankers' self-serving bias that benefits both rankers and prestige-seeking universities and reinforces the persistence of rankings in higher education.

This study briefly reports on a range of conflicts involving teaching work in joint-stock higher education organizations which trade shares in [B]3 stock market, especially Ânima, Estácio, Kroton and Ser Educacional. After the systematic organization of empirical observations, we defined our object through a methodology specific to the investigation of social conflicts. The study resulted in a list of conflicts based on news articles which mentioned conflicts in these organizations between 2009 and 2018. A total of 102 articles about 56 conflicts led to the identification of some common issues experienced by professors in these companies, such as pedagogical reforms aimed at favoring online courses, overcrowded classrooms and dismissals. The research proceeds to characterize these corporations based on Brazil's Higher Education Census, the stock market's website and selected companies' websites, besides specialized magazines and newspapers. Analyzing conflicts leads us to conclude about an array of changes caused by financial control over teaching establishments.

Academic staff owe a duty of fidelity to uphold institutional standards of integrity. They also have their own values and conceptions of integrity as well as personal responsibilities and commitments. The question of how academic practitioners address or reconcile conflicting values and responsibilities has been underexplored in the literature. Before we can examine effectiveness of academic integrity strategies and develop best practices, we need to examine the breadth of integrity decisions. To this end we posited the academic integrity problem as a set of seven dilemmas and presented them to post-secondary education staff (N = 80) located in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia. We asked the participants to recommend a solution to each dilemma. This yielded a modest sample of 498 themes across 30 categories. We expected the responses to fall on a binary scale where decisions either support the integrity or ignore it. However, the data suggests that academic integrity decisions are better suited to continuum where participants aim to reconcile personal and institutional obligations. We further argue that academic integrity decisions are predicated on personal experience and therefore pose a challenge for policy standardization and enforcement. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of the findings for practice.

The university accreditation system in Chile appears to be influenced by tensions between interest groups from well-established institutions and newer (private) institutions. These institutions depend to a certain extent on accreditation decisions to obtain indirect public funding. However, the system relies on faculty nominated by conglomerates formed by these same institutions to decide on accreditation. This arrangement creates a potential conflict of interest that can jeopardize the accreditation's legitimacy. We explore this potential bias through an empirical study examining voting behaviour by commissioners of the Chilean National Commission of Accreditation from March 2013 to October 2016. We assess whether commissioners appeared as favouring institutions within their appointing conglomerates. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the region designed to examine the presence of bias in higher education accreditation. Findings indicate commissioners, on average, tended to favour institutions in their appointing conglomerates. We discuss the findings in the broader context of a forthcoming reform of the accreditation system.

We sought to apply natural language processing to the task of automatic risk of bias assessment in preclinical literature, which could speed the process of systematic review, provide information to guide research improvement activity, and support translation from preclinical to clinical research. We use 7840 full-text publications describing animal experiments with yes/no annotations for five risk of bias items. We implement a series of models including baselines (support vector machine, logistic regression, random forest), neural models (convolutional neural network, recurrent neural network with attention, hierarchical neural network) and models using BERT with two strategies (document chunk pooling and sentence extraction). We tune hyperparameters to obtain the highest F1 scores for each risk of bias item on the validation set and compare evaluation results on the test set to our previous regular expression approach. The F1 scores of best models on test set are 82.0% for random allocation, 81.6% for blinded assessment of outcome, 82.6% for conflict of interests, 91.4% for compliance with animal welfare regulations and 46.6% for reporting animals excluded from analysis. Our models significantly outperform regular expressions for four risk of bias items. For random allocation, blinded assessment of outcome, conflict of interests and animal exclusions, neural models achieve good performance; for animal welfare regulations, BERT model with a sentence extraction strategy works better. Convolutional neural networks are the overall best models. The tool is publicly available which may contribute to the future monitoring of risk of bias reporting for research improvement activities.

Cochrane devolves most editorial governance of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), including title prioritization, protocol registration, peer-review, editorial oversight and subsequent review deposition, to specific Cochrane Review Group (CRG) editorial boards. Current Cochrane policy stipulates authors of reviews who are also members of the supporting CRG declare this non-financial conflict of interest and confirm no involvement in the review editorial process. The aim of this cross-sectional analysis was to assess adherence to Cochrane's editorial conflict of interest policy. All 260 published Cochrane reviews (CR) in issues 1 to 6 from 2019 of the CDSR were reviewed. A total of 133 (51.2%, 133/260) of CRs had at least one author that was also listed as an editor in the CRG. Of these, only five (3.8%, 5/133) appropriately declared the conflict according to Cochrane policy. In 6.5% (17/133) CRs, the contact author had a leading editorial position within the CRG and in only four of 17 was this declared according to Cochrane policy. No CR with the contact author who also had a leading editorial position described methods to prevent any potential issues related to this scenario during the editorial process in accordance with Cochrane policy. We propose a specific form to improve the transparency and reliability of editorial conflict of interest reporting in CRs. The suggested form can be adapted to other contexts.

The Rohingya is a stateless minority group in Myanmar, suffering from ethnic and religious armed conflicts, state persecution, and displacement. Since the escalation of violent conflicts in the early 2010s, they have fled the country and sought refuge in neighbouring countries, and in the biggest numbers, in Bangladesh. Living in densely populated refugee camps, Rohingya children receive very limited access to education and are exceptionally vulnerable to illnesses, violence and trafficking. This discussion paper describes the conditions and contexts under which education is offered, and identifies the serious problems and gaps in provision for Rohingya children in Bangladeshi refugee camps.

Education news aggregation at the "RealClearEducation" (RCE) website purports to be journalistic, independent, thorough and somewhat representative of the whole. During a period from 2014 to 2016, however, it was run directly by leaders of the DC consulting group Bellwether Education Partners (BEP). During that period, RCE's selection of source material was lopsidedly skewed toward those issues and perspectives favored by those allied with BEP. Except for some occasional instances of pandering to the more politically well connected among the opposition, "RealClearEducation" was about as biased a news source as was humanly possible to construct. Its coverage of the Common Core Standards Initiative (CCSI), in particular, ranged from blatant promotion to a variety of disingenuously framed news and opinion pieces featuring individuals and organizations receiving funds from Common Core's donor groups, without revealing their conflict of interest. Bellwether's behavior in managing a news outlet raises larger questions about the trustworthiness of information provided by education policy funders and recipients, the incestuous nature of the interlocking interests at both ends of the funding, and the almost total absence of the vast majority of the US population from some education policy discussions.

Despite now long-standing recognition of the value and importance of the scholarship of teaching and learning, questions continue to be raised about how to satisfy the hybrid responsibilities of teaching and research. The key message of this paper is that instructor-researchers, educational developers, and research ethics personnel should consider two key guidance documents in tandem: the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education's statement on Ethical Principles in University Teaching (Murray, Gillese, Lennon, Mercer, & Robinson, 1996) and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, & Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, 2014). Together these documents provide much needed guidance for teaching and researching ethically.

Our nation is at a crossroads. The fight to reclaim our country and restore democracy must come from the bottom up and must be rooted at the local level. Those who teach, now more than ever, represent the crucial linchpin in this struggle. In his book "Teacher Strike!: Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order," the author documents some astounding efforts by teachers across the country to build and wield collective power. He concluded in his book that "two examples of teacher unionism, one hundred years apart…show that teacher organization is at its best when it is part of a larger social movement and when it can show how intimately related are teacher working conditions, student learning conditions, and social equality." The two examples he used were both from Chicago: Margaret Haley and the Chicago Teachers Federation (CTF--a founding union of the American Federation of Teachers in 1916) in the early 20th century, and Karen Lewis and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) in the early 21st. In this article, he explains what we can learn from each and share what his union (situated just a bit north of the Windy City) is doing locally to follow in their footsteps.

Libraries have long existed to assist users in accessing accurate information for their needs. Industry has long been motivated to spread disinformation to promote their industry's message to the public. Although corporate disinformation techniques perfected by the tobacco industry in the 1950's were exposed, instead of disappearing they have only grown more influential with the rise of the internet. Many industries from petroleum to pharmaceuticals use scientific research to promote their corporate message and have contributed to harming the public. Users need information literacy (IL) to provide them with the skills they need to critically evaluate information and reject the techniques of disinformation. This essay will argue that librarians should provide instruction about conflict of interest (COI) while instructing users in evaluation, and that the "Framework for Information Literacy" (2016) can provide a structure for this instruction. Libraries can help their patrons exercise critical skepticism when evaluating information to avoid becoming disinformed. It concludes with a call for librarians to be more cognizant of issues of money and power when evaluating information to assist users with making the choices that best meet their information needs.

Faculty work now includes market-like behaviors that create research, teaching, and service opportunities. This study employs an embedded case study design to evaluate the extent to which faculty members interact with external organizations to mitigate financial constraints and how those relationships vary by academic discipline. The findings show a similar number of ties among faculty members in high- and low-resource disciplines, reciprocity between faculty members and external organizations, and an expanded conceptualization of faculty work.

Over the last 20 years, research focused on work-integrated learning (WIL) has expanded considerably. While early research predominantly utilized quantitative study designs, recently a more diverse set of methodologies is being used to address questions and issues arising from a range of WIL models. This Special Issue is intended to present different methodologies available to WIL researchers. The papers include case studies of how these methodologies, and methods within, are being used for WIL research, along with discussion of the strengths and limitations of using the research approach. Examples of case study methodology, multiple case studies, mixed methods, program evaluation research, hermeneutic phenomenology, grounded theory, reflective practice as research, and large-scale data mining, provide insights into different ways of addressing research questions. In this issue, the advantages and challenges faced by those conducting research as 'insiders' within their own organizations are also examined. Specifically, within this paper the importance of ethical conduct while engaging with research, especially WIL research using human participants, is discussed, including the need to obtain ethical approval and consideration of issues around informed consent, conflict of interest, risk of harm and confidentiality.

This study aimed to adapt to Turkish the measurement of work-leisure conflict developed by Tsaur et al. (2012) to measure work-leisure conflict and to present the causes and dimensions of the conflict and to develop a new study-leisure conflict scale for university students based on the items of this scale and to undertake reliability and validity studies for the new measure. A total of 306 students took part in the study. First of all, "Measurement of Work-Leisure," the foundation for this study, was translated into Turkish in order to ensure linguistic equivalence. Validity was investigated by using explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses. Reliability was calculated by utilizing Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient, split halves method and Guttman reliability coefficient. Statistical results obtained from the study show that the adapted Turkish version of the scale was a valid and reliable measurement instrument.

This case examines the technological, ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of drones in business. Mary McKay, a recent Management Information Systems (MIS) graduate sets up a professional photography and videography business. She gains a leg up on the competition with drone-mounted cameras and live video streaming through the free streaming app, Periscope. While Mary's star rises, Carl Davis, Mary's friend from college, gets fired from the local television station for invading the privacy of one of his stories' subjects. Struggling to make it as a news blogger, Carl hires Mary and her drones to help him report on a scandal in local government. Before Mary knows it, she's watching an illicit affair unfold through the lens of her drone. Mary must ultimately decide if she's willing to broadcast the private scene to Carl's followers.

We communicate, relate, educate and make our world meaningful through stories. Stories are integrated in and are a part of every sustainability issue. In this article, we develop the concept of sustainability stories, and how they can be assessed and developed to correspond with the intentions of education for sustainable development (ESD). Literature shows that valued competences such as action competence, systems perspectives, student engagement and critical reflection have difficulties when it comes to informing educational practices in profound ways. In this article, we argue for the use of sustainability stories as an educational strategy to overcome this problem. Here the didactical tool ecolocigal, pluralism, organisations, social, economic and, agents (EPOSEA) aids teachers in enhancing their ESD classroom activities as well as providing a tool for co-producing sustainability stories. We argue for the potential of serious stories in ESD to holistically engage learners in exploring complex issues.

Prior research suggests that high school students often struggle to evaluate online content; however, with support, they can learn to conduct more effective digital evaluations. This study extends our understanding of how students attend to the source of online information and the role instruction may play in changing students' evaluation of online sources. Reporting on the pre- and posttest responses of high school students (N = 420) who participated in an in-school intervention, this study suggests that students made progress in learning to investigate the source of web content and reading laterally. Findings have implications for how educators and researchers support students' development as critical Internet users.

This paper contributes to discussions about the processes and implications of technology transfer through analysis of the work of technology transfer professionals. The analysis relies on interviews with technology transfer professionals in Israeli universities, coupled with theory from the domains of knowledge brokering, boundary work, and the institutional work approach in new institutional theory. I argue that these professionals undertake two types of boundary work. The first is brokering work, in which they connect academic researchers with industrial partners and translate knowledge across boundaries. The second is maintenance work, a type of institutional work that involves policing and monitoring, to protect the university's ownership of intellectual property and the normative boundaries of academic science. I reveal the strategies that professionals employ to manage conflicts of interest and of values as part of their ongoing work, and discuss the implications for technology transfer policy and the normative aspect of university-industry relations.

This qualitative study of 15 relational counsellors explores the experiences and ethical quandaries of counsellors working within an IAPT service. The data was analysed using the Voice Relational Method [Brown, L. M. & Gilligan, C. (1993). Meeting at the crossroads: Women's psychology and girls' development. "Feminism & Psychology," 3(1), 11-35]. Three main themes were identified: client experience, counsellor experience and relationships. Findings indicate that the therapeutic relationship with clients is crucial, but there is often a disparity between working as a relational counsellor and the expectations and demands of working within IAPT; a pressure on doing and achieving goals rather than a focus on the therapy relationship. Supportive managers were essential to enable counsellors to balance IAPT expectations with ethical and therapeutic relationships with clients. This research also questions the ethical basis of the IAPT system.

Conflict of interest is heavily intertwined with research. The purpose of this study was to examine the literature and regulations in order to describe efforts required to properly monitor and disclose conflict of interest as researchers become steadily involved in innovation and discovery. The public assumes that when a conflict is disclosed, it means negative or unlawful behavior, but conflict of interest is not always bad. The primary effort should be expended on acknowledging conflicts and being transparent about whatever the conflict entails. To handle conflict of interest in an upfront manner, it is necessary for institutions to maintain strict policies, review conflicts on at least an annual basis, and have guidelines in place to manage the conflict and follow up with ongoing monitoring of the conflicts.

The most difficult aspect of financial conflict of interest (FCOI) and compliance with federal regulations involves the assessment and management of identified FCOIs. While some federal agencies provide examples of the structure and content of management plans, it is up to institutions to evaluate FCOI to determine whether and how research may be conducted when conflict is present. Unfortunately, there is minimal federal guidance on the evaluation and management aspect of FCOI and institutions must carefully consider and implement appropriate procedures to ensure compliance. Once a conflict has been disclosed and is known by the institution, the burden of responsibility falls squarely on the institution. Without clear direction from federal agencies, institutions may become paralyzed with indecision or refuse to allow any research to proceed where there is known conflict. Sources exist which provide some guidance on how to mitigate conflicts of interest. This paper provides information and steps to assist institutions with the evaluation and management of FCOI.

The purpose of this study is to highlight the opinions of teachers with regard to the approaches of parental involvement in school. A case study design was used in this study conducted that is employed in studies of a qualitative nature. In the "case" under research, there was an attempt to determine the opinions of teachers regarding the opinions of parents; within this process student portfolios, homework assignments aimed at assessing student performance and reports and minutes of parent-teacher meetings were examined in order to assess how and to what degree the perceptions of parents had an effect (on the teacher-parent relationship). For purposes of determining the study group, importance was attached to the principle of volunteerism participation, and the study group consisted of 6 teachers employed at a state school located within the district of Beylikdüzü in Istanbul during the 2015-2016 academic year. A demographic information form, semi-structured interviews and minutes of teacher-parent meetings were employed as data-collection tools. The data obtained were evaluated using a data content analysis technique. It was observed that during the analysis process of the findings obtained from both the interviews and the document analysis that teachers expressed their views concerning their relationships with parents as being negative on the whole and that the attitudes of parents were not sufficiently developed with regard to the issue of conducting a conducive parent-teacher dialogue of high quality.

As global discussions of evaluation standards become more contextually nuanced, culturally responsive conceptions of ethics have not been sufficiently discussed. In academic social research, ethical clearance processes have been designed to protect vulnerable people from harm related to participation in a research project. This article expands the ambit of ethical protection thinking and proposes a relational ethics approach for evaluation practitioners. This centers an analysis of power relations among and within all the different stakeholder groups in order to establish, in a context-specific manner, which stakeholders are vulnerable and in need of protection. The approach also contextualizes the nature of "the public good," as part of an ethical consideration of interest trade-offs during evaluations. The discussion is informed by our experiences in African contexts and speaks to the "Made in Africa" research agenda but is also relevant to other global contexts where alternatives to "developed country" ontological assumptions about the roles of researchers and participations and the nature of vulnerability are being reconsidered.

This commentary discusses SSIs in relation to environmental ethics. In their article, Augusto Macalalag Jr., Joseph Johnson and Michelle Lai note tensions between SSIs and environmental education and investigate educational experiences that address some of these tensions. The discourse associated with SSIs generally does not consider nature-centric ethics, which prioritize the sustenance of nature above any of the entities that are part of it, including humans. I will discuss education funded by oil and gas companies developing the oil sands in Canada, to examine different ethical positions embedded in this SSI. Discussion focuses on how the human and social implications of education development are often prioritized, without considering the environmental implications of accepting corporate funding for education. I argue that considering nature-centric ethical positions can more fully illuminate and inform decision making in educational development and SSIs more broadly.

This study, conducted in the Republic of Korea, analyzed nursing faculty members' knowledge of and attitudes toward research ethics according to their characteristics and the institutional environment. A survey was conducted from April 24 to July 23, 2017. The participants were 210 nursing professors from 57 universities in Korea. The survey questionnaire gathered information on participants' characteristics, their knowledge of and attitudes toward research ethics, and their perceived training needs. A relatively low difficulty index was found for knowledge items dealing with conflicts of interest (0.66), copyright (0.65), and plagiarism and duplicate publications (0.17) than for the other six items. Of the 12 items assessing attitudes toward research ethics, use of a plagiarism-checking program and reviewing manuscripts from members of one's own research group had the lowest scores. The knowledge level of participants whose institutions provided a plagiarism-checking program was higher than those whose institutions did not. Former group also showed better attitudes toward research ethics. High-priority training needs were obtaining institutional review board (IRB) approval, writing informed consent forms, and obtaining informed consent for studies on children and pregnant women. A more intensive training program for nursing faculty is required on specific topics, including conflicts of interest, copyright, plagiarism, duplicate publications, IRB approval, and informed consent. Furthermore, all nursing institutions in Korea should provide a plagiarism-checking program to faculty members.

Scholars in the field of conflict resolution in schools theoretically argued that minor distractions and disturbances are conflicts. In the present study, we refer to them as emerging conflicts. The study has been carried out within the phenomenographic research tradition and used semi-structured interviews. We addressed the professionals -- the teachers -- who deal with emerging conflicts every day, investigating their different ways of understanding an emerging conflict. The 9 different ways we found make the collective and shared understandings of emerging conflicts visible and form a professional language with which to discuss these kinds of conflicts. These nine could be divided into three groups, "the social practice of the classroom," something that stems from "outside" the classroom, and something that characterises "all human interaction." The awareness of the existing understandings could further be discussed in relation to what is actually taught in teacher education in Sweden.

The paradigm of evidence-based education continues to inform the development of policy in a number of countries. At its simplest level, evidence-based education incorporates evidence, often that provided by randomised controlled trials, into classroom practice. England's Education Endowment Foundation is in the process of exporting evidence-based school education, promoted as a medical approach, to other countries, including Australia. Australia is in the process of establishing an Education Evidence Base, informed by the government's 2016 Productivity Commission report. While the literature around evidence-based education is explicit in identifying its basis in medicine, there has been little medical input into its development. Interdisciplinary examination of the medical literature reveals the contested nature and troubled state of evidence-based medicine and what policymakers need to consider to maximise the benefits of this translation into education.

Agency theory is a theoretical platform used primarily to describe processes related to corporate governance. However, the theory is also being used to describe the processes associated with the functioning of the higher education system. Contractual relationships in this sector make it possible to identify the institutions that may act as either principal or agent, depending on the research perspective. Relationships between the state/government (principal) and public universities (agents) are the most commonly studied paradigm.The aim of this article is to present proposals for reform of the higher education system in Poland, using agency theory as the research perspective. The most important dysfunctionalities of the current system, viewed as a manifestation of the agency problem, are identified, and the proposed new standards of academic governance are confronted with theoretical mechanisms reducing conflicts of interest: outcome-based and behaviour-based contracts. The main recommendation contained in reform proposals is a desire to increase the institutional autonomy of public universities, leading to a strong leadership of the university authorities.

Purpose: This paper aims to apply the garbage can model to identify factors that affect managerial decision-making processes in educational systems undergoing reforms. Design/methodology/approach: This paper used a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with 39 teachers and managers in schools undergoing a system-wide reform. Findings: The paper presents examples for a typology of decision outcomes found in the model and provides explanations for their emergence. It shows that there are many challenges that are associated with reform implementation and suggests factors that need to be taken into account when planning and implementing a reform. Originality/value: School management and policy makers can learn about the risks that are associated with garbage can decision-making and the various risk factors. Practical suggestions are given to reduce the probability of suboptimal decision-making.

This essay describes Colin Irvine's process of applying and interviewing for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at his alma mater. Irvine recounts the timeline of events from being notified of the position at the college to awaiting the notification of whether or not he was accepted for the position. He describes the conflicts in his personal life that added to his stress throughout the process, and how he felt as though he had to apply for the position regardless of the potential conflicts in his personal life.
