In this work, we use context trees for privacypreserving modeling of genetic sequences. The resulting estimated models are applied for functional comparison of genetic sequences in a privacy preserving way. Here we define privacy as uncertainty about the genetic source sequence given its model and use equivocation to quantify it. We evaluate the performance of our approach on publicly available human genomic data. The simulation results confirm that the context trees can be effectively used to detect similar genetic sequences while guaranteeing high privacy levels. However, a trade-off between privacy and utility has to be taken into account in practical applications.

The production of dental inlays and crowns requires precise information on patients’ teeth morphology. The conventional method is the preparation of impressions using mold materials, e.g. a silicone impression material. The disadvantage of this technique is the human choke impulse and the flavor of the material. These discomforts can be avoided by methods where a three-dimensional scanner is used for recording the teeth morphology. The present study reveals the accuracy of three model types, namely conventional impression, rapid prototyping using an oral scanner C.O.S., 3M (Schweiz) AG and milling from a proprietary resin using the oral scanner iTero, Straumann Holding AG. For each method five models were fabricated from a steel reference (standard). Using a nanotom m (phoenixǀx-ray, GE Sensing and Inspection Technologies GmbH), three-dimensional micro computed tomography data sets of the standard and the 15 models were recorded and landmark distances within the data sets were measured with sub-pixel accuracy. To verify these results a coordinate measuring machine (Leitz PMM 864, Hexagon Metrology GmbH) based on tactile detection was used for the measurement of the landmark distances, and a correction of the distances measured by the nanotom m was arranged. The nanotom data sets of the 15 models were also compared to the standard by means of a non-rigid registration algorithm. The calculated deformation field exhibited mean pixel displacement values of (0.19 ± 0.09) mm for the C.O.S. models, (0.12 ± 0.07) mm for the gypsum models and (0.19 ± 0.12) mm for the i-Tero models.

For roughly two decades a new generation of robots, robotic prostheses and implantable devices is about to arise accompanied by great optimism that they will widely pervade our daily life in a near future. This paper presents the results from a survey on the question if people want to share their life and body with robots. The survey, carried out in connection with the “Robotics” exhibition at the Swiss National Exhibition Expo.02, counts over 2000 participants. The questionnaire covers issues on robotics in general, service and personal robots, robotic prostheses and artificial organs. While the results testify a positive attitude towards potential robotic co-workers, flat-mates or body part, they include a number of surprising answers. We find correlations in the data, discuss interpretations, speculate about the answers and cultural influences and finally conclude: Whom are we building robots for and what should they be like? The accurate prediction of the post-surgical facial shape is of paramount importance for surgical planning in facial surgery. In this paper we present a framework for facial surgery simulation which is based on volumetric finite element modeling. We contrast conventional procedures for surgical planning against our system by accompanying a patient during the entire process of planning, medical treatment and simulation. In various preprocessing steps a 3D physically based facial model is reconstructed from CT and laser range scans. All geometric and topological changes are modeled interactively using Alias.™ Applying fully 3D volumetric elasticity allows us to represent important volumetric effects such as incompressibility in a natural and physically accurate way. For computational efficiency, we devised a novel set of prismatic shape functions featuring a globally C1-continuous surface in combination with a C0 interior. Not only is it numerically accurate, but this construction enables us to compute smooth and visually appealing facial shapes. An extended evaluation and quantitative analysis of a clinical test series with several female and male patients clearly demonstrates the performance of our framework., CS technical report / ETH Zurich, 326
