Fault detection plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, availability, and reliability of modern industrial processes. This study focuses on data-driven fault detection methods, which have gained significant attention across various industrial sectors due to the rapid development of industrial automation technologies and the availability of extensive datasets. The objectives of this paper are to comprehensively review and present the theoretical foundations of widely used data-driven fault detection approaches. Specifically, these approaches are applied to fault detection in wind turbine systems, with performance evaluation conducted using multiple statistical measures. The data utilized in this study were collected from a simulated benchmark of a wind turbine system. The data-driven methods are tested under the assumption that the wind turbine operates in a steady-state region. Additionally, a comparative study is conducted to identify and discuss the primary challenges associated with the practical application of these methods in real-world scenarios. Simulation results show the effectiveness and efficacy of data-driven approaches concerning the sensitivity and robustness of wind turbine sensor faults as applied in practical industrial environments. The residential landscape of western societies in the 20th century was based on a nuclear and monogamous normative representation of the family. This representation contrasts with the representation of the family that some consensually non-monogamous (CNM) parents carry. How did CNM informants combine residence, parenting and multiple relationships within the hetero-mono-normative organizational legacy of society? An extensive set of exploratory and ethnographic data was gathered in francophone countries in Western Europe during 2013–2018. Informants' dwelling configurations were interpreted as the result of their personal life paths interwoven with a web of macrostructural tensions. A comparative approach on residences, combined with life stories gathered within a strategic group of informants, contributed to understanding the various processes leading to specific forms of CNM dwellings with children. The comparison highlights five categories of CNM residential patterns, all resulting from attempts to compromise with the hetero-mono-normative dwelling tradition. The developments of transportation and communication technologies appeared as an important factor in the spatial and temporal organizations of family functions within the CNM configurations observed. These CNM family arrangements also appeared as ephemeral and versatile. Erving Goffman is one of sociology's most influential thinkers. Scholars debate the extent to which he worked in competing theoretical traditions (e.g., interactionist or structuralist), yet few acknowledge his intellectual indebtedness to animal ethology. This article traces how naturalistic studies of paralinguistic animal communication influenced Goffman's corpus and specifies the ideas he built on from that field, especially territoriality and ritualized display. Goffman's comparative approach to animal and human interaction reveals the shortcomings of sociologists' lingua-centric approach to interaction; elevates animals to social actors, capable of metacommunication, reading others' intentions, and adjusting their behavior accordingly; and humbles humans, who he finds enacting rituals of civility for the same reason animals engage in ritualized display: to manage threats and facilitate bonding. Goffman's thesis on the similarities between animal and human social behavior compels sociology to consider animal studies, and his use of ethology helps reconcile his interactionist and Durkheimian tendencies. This article investigates how municipalities choose their organizational arrangements for delivering early childhood services and the interplay among the regional framework, local legacies, and agency factors influencing these choices. We answered these questions through a mix-method approach and a comparative analysis of four European regions in the same country (Italy). Our data shows that a variety of hybrid organizational models for service delivery is possible, and the fundamental role played by the regional framework in affecting organizational choices – with local factors such as legacy and agency compensating in the event of its absence. Matching national surveys with the dataset offered by the Worlds of Journalism Study network (2012–2016), this article presents an analysis of trust in the press covering 16 European countries and the United States. Drawing from the spatial proximity model of voter utility, this article focuses on the ideological proximity between journalists' and citizens' left-right positions as a determinant of trust in the press. We expect a positive relationship between these two variables. However, we also hypothesize that the strength of such relationship is mediated by the type of media model (according to Hallin and Mancini's classification) existing in the different countries. In particular, we expect a higher impact within those contexts where the level of political parallelism is higher. The statistical results are as expected. This article highlights that news media trust research should focus more thoroughly on the interaction and interrelation of news media, audience, and politics. This paper offers a comparison between Romanian communist counterinsurgency (1944–1962) and similar campaigns fought by Western and Eastern governments in the early Cold War, in particular those waged by the British and French governments in their African, Asian and European colonies and those of the Soviet Union in its borderlands. The comparison focuses on three main components, population control, intelligence and military operations. Highlighting both similarities and differences across different cultural, economic, geographical, ethnic and political landscapes, the perspective laid out in this paper is an argument in favour of systematic and sustained comparative approaches to asymmetric warfare. One specific phenomenon in the Spring Festival travel rush in China is that purchasing a train ticket becomes tough as the train tickets could be sold out extremely soon. Therefore, the current paper presents an analysis of college students' trip ticket purchasing strategies for homecoming trips during Chinese Spring Festival using a sequential stated adaptation experiment, based on which three different choice models were applied and the results show that 1) college students would keep purchasing the ticket of planned train trip and this willingness would decrease with the increasing of the times they fail to get the ticket; 2) if college students decide to give up the conventional train trip they have planned, they have a tendency to choose other conventional train trips, but it is not the case regarding high-speed train trips; 3) air itinerary trips are attractive alternatives to trains trips, especially to high-speed train trips. Comparative cancer studies help us determine if discoveries in one species apply to another. Feline and human oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC and HOSCC) are invasive tumours in which inflammation and abnormal p16 expression are reported. Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the expression of p16 and microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase 1 (mPGES1) in 42 HOSCC and 45 FOSCC samples with known expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) and cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147). High p16 expression was more common in HOSCC tumour cells compared to adjacent stroma and oral epithelium (p <.05), with a similar but statistically nonsignificant pattern in FOSCC. Interestingly, high mPGES1 expression in FOSCC was more common in the adjacent epithelium compared to the other compartments (p <.05). In HOSCC, mPGES1 was more similar between compartments but was numerically more common in the tumour compartment (p >.05). There were nominal (p > 0.05) differences in marker expression between high and low mPGES1 expressing tumours in both species, including high p16 observed more commonly in high mPGES1 tumours, and COX‐2 positive tumours being more common in low mPGES1 tumours. High CD147 HOSCC tumours were more common in the high mPGES1 HOSCC group (p <.05). In the FOSCC cohort, where there was no statistical difference in CD147 expression between high and low mPGES1 tumours, there were numerically higher CD147 cases in the high mPGES1group. Different expression patterns in FOSCC and HOSCC could be related to different risk factors. For example, p16 is a marker of papillomavirus‐driven HOSCC, but a causal relationship between papillomaviruses and FOSCC has yet to be definitively demonstrated. The significance of high P16 expression in the absence of papillomavirus infection deserves further study, and the relative contributions of COX2 and mPGES1 to tumour inflammation and progression should be explored. The findings reveal potential similarities in FOSCC and HOSCC biology, while also demonstrating differences that may relate to risk factors and pathogenesis that are unique to each species. This paper seeks to understand the social role played by food assistance initiatives in Portugal. Based on the understanding that these organizations are "spaces of care," it is possible to reflect on the support provided by them in a more comprehensive and integrative way. Therefore, the various care practices that emerge in these organizational contexts are explored. This study presents a qualitative comparative methodological approach and a range of ethnographic methods to explore the perspectives of different actors (supervisors, volunteers, and beneficiaries) within different models of food assistance (Surplus Food Redistribution Charity, Soup Kitchen, and Social Supermarket). The main results indicate the presence of several "improvised" and "veiled" care practices in the analyzed initiatives that go beyond food issues. These manifestations of care may stem from altruistic acts and/or function as a "remedial measure," serving as a compensatory mechanism in response to services deemed inadequate. Purpose: The incoming Canadian cohort of medical students is comprised mainly of individuals from Generation Z (Gen Z; born between 1997 and 2012), with greater than 50% of applicants identifying as female. A gap remains in our understanding of Gen Z women learners in their challenges in navigating medical education, their expectations for their medical careers and the influences that have impacted their worldview. This study explored the needs, values, and experiences of Gen Z women medical students and the impact of these factors on mentorship expectations among this population that will soon be entering the workforce. Methods: Upon receiving ethics approval from the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board, semi‐structured interviews were conducted (February–May 2021) with 15 Gen Z women students from 14 English‐speaking Canadian medical schools who had given written consent to participate. An iterative constant comparative team approach was utilised in which the interview guide and sampling were adjusted as the data evolved. Transcripts were line by line coded into categories, then grouped into themes using descriptive analysis. Results: These socially aware learners described how society had afforded them greater opportunities for expression, which gave them a sense of feeling advantaged over older generations. However, participants paradoxically expressed feelings of powerlessness and commented on tensions they experienced when interacting with older generation physician mentors, especially during conversations on social justice issues. They also highlighted instances of biased mentorship specific to their gender. Participants emphasised a desire for inclusive mentorship that considered the mentee's identity and intersectionality. Conclusions: The growing number of women learners in Canadian medical schools necessitates a re‐evaluation of mentorship delivery. Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) gene therapy has shown potential as a therapeutic approach for thalassemia in recent years. However, a comparison of the varying gene therapy methods of HSC gene therapy in thalassemia has never been reviewed. This study aims to evaluate the utilization of HSC gene therapy approaches in animal models of thalassemia. A systematic review was conducted in five databases: PubMed, EBSCOHost, Science Direct, SCOPUS, and Proquest using a combination of the terms hematopoietic stem cell or hematopoietic stem cell or HSC, thalassemia, genetic therapy or gene therapy and animal model. Only journals published in English between 2008 and 2023 were included. This literature included six studies analyzing the use of HSC gene therapy in thalassemic mice models. The three outcomes being assessed in this review were globin levels, hematological parameters, and red blood cell (RBC) phenotypes. Gene therapy approaches for thalassemia using HSC showed significant improvement in β‐globin levels and RBC phenotypes. Phenotypic improvements were also observed. These outcomes indicate good efficacy in gene therapy for thalassemia in mice models. To improve the lengthy computation time of conventional variable structure interacting multiple model (VSIMM) algorithm and increase the precision of target prediction and extrapolation, the target state and flight intent information captured by the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) are used as the model's prior information; combining this information with VSIMM theoretical framework, we purpose an intent variable structure interacting multiple model (INT-VSIMM) algorithm. Firstly, the motion pattern of the target in the flight phase of the flight path is decomposed, and complete sets of motion models are established. Secondly, according to the principle of directed graph switching, a model set switching method is designed, which is mainly based on "hard" switching and supplemented by "soft" switching. Finally, the INT-VSIMM algorithm is used to track the trajectory of the target aircraft, and short-term trajectory extrapolation is performed based on the target state estimation. The simulation results show that the target tracking performance computational time based on the INT-VSIMM algorithm is superior to the comparative existing methods, and the extrapolated trajectory has less error in the short term, which can satisfy the needs of conflict detection. Contract law was one of the main subjects discussed in the early modern legal genre of differentiae iuris civilis et canonici (‘differences between civil and canon law’). Similar topics were covered in both late medieval and early modern differentiae – hence this genre offers a good opportunity for comparative historical research dedicated to selected topics of contract law (such as those discussed here: the actionability of bare agreements, stipulation for the benefit of a third party, overreaching in contract formation and the lease of a house to a scholar). An examination of the sources proves that the authors of early modern differentiae applied the comparative method in their works. This involved the presentation of sources and rationales from the two bodies of law, the interpretation of sources and arguments in favour of the solutions offered, references to the then-current legal literature and practice and most importantly the preferred method of reconciliation for conflicting laws. Realizing the common wealth of all people is the essential requirement of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Measuring the process of realizing common wealth and the differences between groups is one of the important issues that need to be addressed urgently. In order to reasonably measure the process of realizing common wealth in China, on the premise of horizontal comparability and vertical consistency, the principles of comparability and consistency are introduced, and a comparative method of opportunity advantage based on income distribution is proposed from the perspective of opportunity equity. Using the 2012–2020 CFPS data to measure and test the opportunity advantages and their differences across regions and groups in China. The study found, firstly, that the opportunity advantage persists but tends to diminish across groups, with the more educated group having a more pronounced opportunity advantage, but that this advantage is diminishing over time. Secondly, the doctoral degree group has a greater probability of earning higher incomes, followed by the master's and bachelor's degree groups, but this opportunity advantage, i.e., the probability of earning higher incomes, is diminishing, i.e., the education dividend is diminishing. Third, the difference in opportunity advantage between urban and rural areas still exists, as evidenced by the greater probability of higher incomes in towns than in rural areas, but this advantage has narrowed further over time, with a clear process of urban-rural integration. Fourthly, in terms of gender, men have a certain opportunity advantage over women, but this difference is not significant. Fifthly, in the context of education levels, gender and urban/rural subgroups, under the framework proposed in this paper, China has achieved some success in the process of realizing the common wealth, and is showing a steady upward trend. Objective: The two commonly used diagnostic methods for taurodontism are susceptible to aging changes, mastication wear and other factors. Therefore, this study proposed an improved diagnostic method for taurodontism, and compared it with the previous two methods as a supplement for taurodontism diagnosis. Methods: The included patients were aged 10–89 years and admitted to the Department of Stomatology of Hebei Eye Hospital from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023. Eighty cone-beam computed tomography images were divided equally into 4 groups: 10–29, 30–49, 50–69, and 70–89 years old. The right mandibular first molars were selected as measurement objects. Firstly, |BD| and taurodontism index (TI)-related parameters were measured using Shifman and Chanannel's method and crown-body(CB) and root (R) lengths was measured by Seow and Lai's method. The improved method used the length from the cementoenamel junction(CEJ) to the root bifurcation point(body, B)and the root length(root, R)as the measurement objects. Finally, TI, CB/R ratios, and B/R ratios were calculated according to the formulas given below. One-way ANOVA analysis was mainly used to compare the differences in the values, indices and ratios of taurodontism among different age groups (p<0.05). Results: With the increase of age, |BD| and TI values decreased significantly (p<0.01). The CB/R ratios of 70–89 years group were significantly lower than those of the other three groups (p<0.01). Ratios derived from the improved method were significantly lower in the 70–89 years than in 10–29 years group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The |BD| and TI parameters proposed by Shifman and channel are significantly influenced by age. The measurements of Seow and Lai (CB/R ratios) were less affected by age compared with those of the former. The improved method(B/R ratios) was least affected by age, which would reduce error and bias in the measurement of taurodontism and obtain more objective results in older patients. The interconnection of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) has created new opportunities for remote management, data storage in the cloud, real-time data transfer over long distances, or integration between different OT and IT networks. OT networks require increased attention due to the convergence of IT and OT, mainly due to the increased risk of cyber-attacks targeting these networks. This paper focuses on the analysis of different methods and data processing for protocol recognition and traffic classification in the context of OT specifics. Therefore, this paper summarizes the methods used to classify network traffic, analyzes the methods used to recognize and identify the protocol used in the industrial network, and describes machine learning methods to recognize industrial protocols. The output of this work is a comparative analysis of approaches specifically for protocol recognition and traffic classification in OT networks. In addition, publicly available datasets are compared in relation to their applicability for industrial protocol recognition. Research challenges are also identified, highlighting the lack of relevant datasets and defining directions for further research in the area of protocol recognition and classification in OT environments. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the communication practices of Chinese and US companies on YouTube and explores the effectiveness of different communication strategies at the topic level. Design/methodology/approach: The author selected 22 Chinese companies and 22 US firms and compared the content of their English language corporate YouTube channels through content analysis, sentiment analysis and cluster analysis. Findings: The results revealed that the three communication strategies (information, response and involvement) in general were not significantly different regarding their engagement rates, but they generated different comment scores when communicating topics of corporate social responsibility. The results also showed that Chinese companies were more likely than American firms to display the speeches of corporate leaders, use collectivistic references and present human interest messages in YouTube videos. Research limitations/implications: This study sheds light on how national institutional environment shapes corporate communication on YouTube. Practical implications: This study challenges the infatuation with the involvement strategy and offers some advice for practitioners on topic selection and user comment function management. Originality/value: This study makes a novel contribution to the literature of corporate communication on YouTube by adopting a cross-national comparative approach. Interspecific trait divergence may reflect adaptation and reproductive isolation, particularly after the rapid differentiation that may follow the colonization of new environments. Although new lineages are generally expected to be morphologically and ecologically similar to their ancestors, environmental forces can also drive adaptive differentiation along specific phenotypic axes. We used climate niche models and comparative analyses based on a previously inferred phylogeny to examine the history of ecological and morphological divergence of Neotropical firs (Abies Mill., Pinaceae), a group of conifers that have recently colonized and diversified in the mountains of Mexico and northern Central America. We inferred past secondary contact zones by comparing current and past climate niche projections and looked for evidence of recent interspecific gene flow using genomic data. Neotropical firs have similar niches to each other and show a strong phylogenetic signal for most evaluated morphological traits. Analyses based on individual variables suggested a random walk model of differentiation. However, early adaptation to tropical conditions is inferred in the ancestor of the southernmost firs, as all modern southern taxa are differentiated climatically from Abies concolor, the northernmost species. In addition, observed autapomorphic traits for soil properties and the number of resin ducts in needles are consistent with possible species‐specific adaptations. Thus, a combination of nonadaptive and adaptive processes along different phenotypic axes, some related to the environment, likely operated after the southward migration of this plant lineage from North America and its subsequent radiation in the Neotropics. The development of sustainable hydrogen markets will play a vital role to achieve energy sovereignty and climate neutrality by 2050. The article analyses what tools and methods are available to contribute to the development of such markets. To identify these tools and methods, the article elaborates on goals and principles of good regulation, and argues for the consideration of flexibility in the regulatory framework to be responsive to technological, societal and economic changes. Considering Germany and the draft EU hydrogen and decarbonised gas market package as case studies, the article develops the argument that legislators should consider regulatory experimentation and apply comparative methods to develop well-working regulatory strategies and an appropriate set of rules for the development of the markets. In this article, I theorize invasion as a sociocognitive phenomenon grounded in conceptual relations between the social statuses of "in" and "out." Pulling invasion out of its ordinary and historically physical context, I explore how people share similar ways of envisioning invasions across a wide variety of domains in social life. To demonstrate this, I employ the qualitative concept‐driven comparative method of trans‐level analysis, tracing common mental models of invasion in the cases of the body, the home, and the nation‐state. Drawing from a sample of 42 in‐depth interviews as well as discourse and policy materials, I find that people envision invasion to take four basic forms: entry and existence, contamination, theft, and domination. Offering the concept of invasion subversion, I explore the highly contestable nature of invasions and the semiotic strategies of marking and unmarking that people leverage to challenge and reinforce arrangements between "in" and "out." Ultimately, I show that invasions foreground social order and make visible the tacit rules of inclusion and exclusion that shape it. Understanding variation in trait allometry and the drivers of variation in sexually selected traits is a major theme in evolutionary biology. The static allometries of sexually selected traits are often positive due to disproportional investment by large individuals into trait size. Comparative studies of weapon allometry are rare, and typically focus on variation along a single dimension (e.g. length), despite weapons often diverging dramatically in shape. Furthermore, studies predominantly focus on groups where weapons have evolved as novel structures (e.g. horns), despite most weapons arising from modifications of existing structures.We test the hypothesis that sexual selection drives variation in static allometry using a phylogenetic comparative approach with 59 brentine weevil species showing remarkable variation in trait exaggeration and sexual size dimorphism (SSD).Contrasting two dimensions of head size exaggeration (a sexually selected trait) and elytron length (a nonsexual trait), positive static allometry was common across both measures of male head size, but not females, and there was positive covariance between male head static allometry and SSD across species. Positive static allometry for male elytron length was less common, but did show positive covariance with SSD, possibly due to the function of wings as compensatory structures for bearing large weapons.Our findings support the hypothesis that sexual selection drives the evolution of allometries both within and among species, and that the modification of existing structures to be used as weapons does not limit the potential for positive static allometry. Although comparative analyses and meta-analyses appear different in their purpose, both often address similar hypotheses and have comparable, if not identical, mathematical foundations. Merging the strength of phylogenetic comparative analyses with the power of meta-analyses to decompose variation has the potential to improve the transparency, reproducibility, and reliability of comparative research. The integration of comparative and meta-analytic approaches can handle data with different structures and levels of organisation, uncovering variation within and between community assemblages, broadening taxonomic coverage, and shaping our understanding of complex (nonlinear) patterns. The marriage of comparative analysis and meta-analysis offers a promising avenue through which comparative biologists can assess generality and the evolutionary processes giving rise to macroecological patterns. Comparative analyses and meta-analyses are key tools to elucidate broad biological principles, yet the two approaches often appear different in purpose. We propose an integrated approach that can generate deeper insights into ecoevolutionary processes. Marrying comparative and meta-analytic approaches will allow for (i) a more accurate investigation of drivers of biological variation, (ii) a greater ability to account for sources of non-independence in experimental data, (iii) more effective control of publication bias, and (iv) improved transparency and reproducibility. Stronger integration of meta-analytic and comparative studies can also broaden the scope from species-centric investigations to community-level responses and function-valued traits (e.g., reaction norms). Purpose: The German Retina.net ROP registry and its Europe‐wide successor, the EU‐ROP registry, collect data from patients treated for ROP. This analysis compares input parameters of these two registries to establish a procedure for joint analyses of different registry data using exemplary datasets from the two registries. Methods: Exemplary datasets from the two databases over a 1‐year period each (German Retina.net ROP Registry, 2011, 22 infants; EU‐ROP Registry, 2021, 44 infants) were compared. The parameters documented in the two databases were aligned and analysed regarding demographic parameters, treatment modalities, complications within first 24 h and retreatments. Results: The current analysis showed that data can be aligned for joint analyses with some adjustments within the data structure. The registry with more detailed data collection (EU‐ROP) needs to be reduced regarding granularity in order to align the different registries, as the registry with lower granularity determines the level of analyses that can be performed in a comparative approach. In the exemplary datasets, we observed that the overall most common ROP severity in both registries was zone II, 3+ (2011: 70.5%; 2021: 65%), with decreasing numbers of clock hours showing preretinal neovascularisations (2011: 10–12 clock hours in 29% of cases, 2021: 4–6 clock hours in 38%). The most prevalent treatment method was laser coagulation in 2011 (75%) and anti‐VEGF therapy in 2021 (86.1%). Within the anti‐VEGF group, all patients were treated with bevacizumab in 2011 and with ranibizumab in 2021. Retreatment rates were comparable in 2011 and 2021. Conclusion: Data from two different ROP registries can be aligned and jointly analysed. The analysis reveals a paradigm shift in treatment modalities, from predominantly laser to anti‐VEGF, and within the anti‐VEGF group from bevacizumab to ranibizumab in Germany. Composite materials, particularly honeycomb composites, are widely utilized in various industries, including aerospace, due to their high energy absorption against the impact and exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. This study aims to leverage the plastic and elastic properties of these materials to develop a simplified numerical model that incorporates orthotropic properties for core modeling. By doing so, the need for detailed honeycomb structure modeling is eliminated, resulting in reduced computational costs and time. A comprehensive three-dimensional finite element model, accounting for structural intricacies, is presented based on experimental data from a reputable source (isotropic model) and its equivalent finite element model (orthotropic model). The model is validated by the experimental results, demonstrating good agreement. The study also investigates parameters such as energy absorption, the internal energy of the core and faces, maximum displacement, and maximum contact force under low-velocity impact scenarios with spherical and cylindrical projectiles. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the orthotropic model, particularly in showcasing greater energy absorption in the core of the sandwich panel when subjected to a cylindrical impactor. The use of AI has progressed rapidly in recent years, and the notion of smartness is commonplace. However, while the topic of smart cities has received considerable research attention, there has been a lack of discussion about the use of smart technologies in prisons. While, especially in Eastern countries, AI in law enforcement is mainly used for security and control purposes (in Hong Kong, intelligent CCTV can detect unusual behaviour, and wristbands are used to collect data on prisoners), in Northern Europe the trend is to build smart prisons where AI is used as a rehabilitation tool (in Finland, Virtual Reality is employed to help rehabilitation). Current measurement systems based on the IEEE-1159 standard have some limitations and robustness problems under noisy and fast-changing conditions. Besides, applying different methods for each Power Quality Disturbance (PQD) to every window is required but time-consuming and not feasible. Therefore, different kinds of two-stage methods, Detection and Classification (D&C), have been improved in many studies. Then, the required measurement can be performed to define disturbance. For this purpose, a new approach based on features of subcomponents with Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs) to detect and classify PQDs is proposed. 21-class dataset including single and multiple PQDs under different noisy conditions was prepared randomly. Of this dataset, determined features were extracted and some of these were selected. Then, selected features were trained and tested with some MLAs in a workstation. Results obtained from comparative MLAs and the other classification methods show that the best MLA with related features is Random Forest with 96.97% while LightGBM, k-Nearest Neighbors, and XGBoost 96.85%, 96.73%, and 92.82% accuracy, respectively. Because the selected features, optimized parameters, and the related MLA were obtained by investigating for features provided from the PQDs in the whole parameter space, this approach brings the advantages of high accuracy, low D&C complexity, and computing load. Seasonal animal dormancy is widely interpreted as a physiological response for surviving energetic challenges during the harshest times of the year (the physiological constraint hypothesis). However, there are other mutually non-exclusive hypotheses to explain the timing of animal dormancy, that is, entry into and emergence from hibernation (i.e. dormancy phenology). Survival advantages of dormancy that have been proposed are reduced risks of predation and competition (the 'life-history' hypothesis), but comparative tests across animal species are few. Using the phylogenetic comparative method applied to more than 20 hibernating mammalian species, we found support for both hypotheses as explanations for the phenology of dormancy. In accordance with the life-history hypotheses, sex differences in hibernation emergence and immergence were favored by the sex difference in reproductive effort. In addition, physiological constraint may influence the trade-off between survival and reproduction such that low temperatures and precipitation, as well as smaller body mass, influence sex differences in phenology. We also compiled initial evidence that ectotherm dormancy may be (1) less temperature dependent than previously thought and (2) associated with trade-offs consistent with the life-history hypothesis. Molecular studies about cyanide biodegradation have been mainly focused on the hydrolytic pathways catalyzed by the cyanide dihydratase CynD or the nitrilase NitC. In some Pseudomonas strains, the assimilation of cyanide has been linked to NitC, such as the cyanotrophic model strain Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT 5344, which has been recently reclassified as Pseudomonas oleovorans CECT 5344. In this work, a phylogenomic approach established a more precise taxonomic position of the strain CECT 5344 within the species P. oleovorans. Furthermore, a pan-genomic analysis of P. oleovorans and other species with cyanotrophic strains, such as P. fluorescens and P. monteilii, allowed for the comparison and identification of the cioAB and mqoAB genes involved in cyanide resistance, and the nitC and cynS genes required for the assimilation of cyanide or cyanate, respectively. While cyanide resistance genes presented a high frequency among the analyzed genomes, genes responsible for cyanide or cyanate assimilation were identified in a considerably lower proportion. According to the results obtained in this work, an in silico approach based on a comparative genomic approach can be considered as an agile strategy for the bioprospection of putative cyanotrophic bacteria and for the identification of new genes putatively involved in cyanide biodegradation. Due to a lack of research on sexual consent in sexual minority communities, we know little about how and what individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) learn about consent. To this end, a convenience sample of 25 LGB adults (N = 25) was interviewed about the factors that have shaped their perceptions and approaches to sexual consent. Data was analyzed using a constant comparative approach wherein data was collected and analyzed simultaneously. Participants identified interpersonal resources, such as past partners, friends, and family, as influential in their views of consent. Evolutionary convergences are observed at all levels, from phenotype to DNA and protein sequences, and changes at these different levels tend to be correlated. Notably, convergent mutations can lead to convergent changes in phenotype, such as changes in metabolism, drug resistance, and other adaptations to changing environments. We propose a two-component approach to detect mutations subject to convergent evolution in protein alignments. The "Emergence" component selects mutations that emerge more often than expected, while the "Correlation" component selects mutations that correlate with the convergent phenotype under study. With regard to Emergence, a phylogeny deduced from the alignment is provided by the user and is used to simulate the evolution of each alignment position. These simulations allow us to estimate the expected number of mutations in a neutral model, which is compared to the observed number of mutations in the data studied. In Correlation, a comparative phylogenetic approach, is used to measure whether the presence of each of the observed mutations is correlated with the convergent phenotype. Each component can be used on its own, for example Emergence when no phenotype is available. Our method is implemented in a standalone workflow and a webserver, called ConDor. We evaluate the properties of ConDor using simulated data, and we apply it to three real datasets: sedge PEPC proteins, HIV reverse transcriptase, and fish rhodopsin. The results show that the two components of ConDor complement each other, with an overall accuracy that compares favorably to other available tools, especially on large datasets. Neoteny is a developmental strategy wherein an organism reaches sexual maturity without associated adult characteristics. In salamanders, neoteny takes the form of individuals retaining aquatic larval characteristics such as external gills upon maturation. Mole salamanders (Ambystoma) occupy a wide range of habitats and areas across the North American continent, and display examples of non‐neotenic, facultatively neotenic and obligate neotenic species, providing high variation for investigating the factors influencing the evolution of neoteny. Here, we use phylogenetic comparative methods to test existing hypotheses that neoteny is associated with elevational and latitudinal distribution, cave‐associated isolation, and hybridisation‐related polyploidy. We also test if neoteny influences the diversity of habitats a species can occupy, since the restriction to an aquatic life should constrain the availability of different niches. We find that neoteny tends to occur in a narrow latitudinal band between 20–30° North, with particularly narrow latitudinal ranges for obligate compared to facultative neotenic species (16–52° North). We also find that facultatively neotenic species occur at elevations more than twice as high as other species on average, and that species with a higher frequency of neoteny typically have lower habitat diversity. Our results suggest that evolutionary transitions between non‐neotenic and facultative neoteny states occur at relatively high and approximately equal rates. Moreover, we estimate that obligate neoteny cannot evolve directly from non‐neotenic species (and vice versa), such that facultative neoteny acts as an evolutionary 'stepping stone' to and from obligate neoteny. However, our transition rate estimates suggest that obligate neoteny is lost >4‐times faster than it evolves, partly explaining the rarity of obligate species. These results support the hypothesis that low latitudes favour the evolution of neoteny, presumably linked to more stable (aquatic) environments due to reduced seasonality, but once evolved it may constrain the diversity of habitats. Spherical q-linear Diophantine fuzzy sets (Sq-LDFSs) showed a significant improvement to handling uncertainty in multi-criteria decision-making (MADM). It is advantageous for two-parametric data as well as for data with three variable parameters. One of the most crucial functions of supply chain management is to increase competitive pressure. The study's standout innovation, Multi-Attributive Ideal Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA), has been implemented to give powerful group decision-making. An ecological perspective is becoming more prevalent due to the competitive climate and customer perception. Green supplier selection (GSS) has become a significant issue. In this study, we address the problem of GSS, which aims for flexibility, robustness, ecological sensitivity, leanness, and feasibility. The feasibility criteria in recycling, environmental, carbon footprints, and water consumption are different from those in standard supplier selection. The aim of our work is to introduced the weighted Average/Geometric aggregation operators based on Sq-LDFSs. For this we defined some operational rules as a foundation of aggregation operators. Secondly we proposed a MAIRCA approach for Sq-LDFSs to address these issues. The MAIRCA strategy, which uses multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) to evaluate and choose traditional and environmental conventionalities, is used to reduce instability and ambiguity. The spherical q-linear Diophantine fuzzy MAIRCA approach provides comparative analysis of decision-makers and criteria. By merging Sq-LDFS and MAIRCA, a hybrid strategy is formed, successfully selecting the best provider among options based on the order of significance. These numerical examples demonstrate the suggested MCGDM approaches that were applied in actual situations, giving a realistic appreciation of their efficacy. The comparative study of the final ranking further supports the idea that these strategies are dependable in decision-making processes in addition to being practical and usable. Competitiveness in the global market is getting more intense. Due to resource and budget constraints, firms need to achieve their expected goals and satisfy all investment constraints under uncertainty. Selecting the set of projects among other candidates to get the most efficient portfolio requires a lot of attention from the Decision Makers (DMs) as this consideration no longer relies purely on the financial term. This problem becomes a multi-objective problem under uncertainty where the financial return and risk from uncertainty are required into the trading off consideration. Due to the financial uncertainty, the chance-constrained programming has been employed in this study for defuzzifying and solving uncertain optimization problems at a specified confidence level that is defined by the DMs. Then, various kinds of investment or financial risk measures, Lower-Semi Variance Index (LSVI), the absolute deviation with the expected FNPV, and the absolute mean-Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) gap are provided in the selection of such risk measures to show their differences in characteristics and performances in the obtained results. Since, such problems can consist of many project candidates and complex constraints, which may grow beyond the application of the exact optimization approach, a meta-heuristic method, Genetic Algorithm (GA), is introduced to optimize this problem through designing and constructing a decision support tool for the investment portfolio selection and optimization. Introduction: Emergency medicine (EM) has historically been among the most competitive specialties in the United States. However, in 2022 and 2023, 219 of 2921 and 554 of 3010 respective National Resident Matching Program positions were initially unfilled. Medical students' selection of a medical specialty is a complex process. To better understand recent trends in the EM residency match, this qualitative study explored through one‐on‐one interviews the rationale of senior medical students who seriously considered EM but ultimately pursued another specialty. Methods: A convenience sample of senior medical students from across the United States was recruited via multiple mechanisms after the 2023 match. Participant characteristics were collected via an online survey. Qualitative data were generated through a series of one‐on‐one semistructured interviews and thematic analysis of the data was performed using a constant comparative approach. Results: Sixteen senior medical students from 12 different institutions participated in the study. Thematic saturation was reached after 12 interviews but data from all 16 interviews were included for qualitative analyses. Five major themes emerged as important in students' consideration but ultimate rejection of EM as a career: (1) innate features of EM attracted or dissuaded students, (2) widespread awareness of a recent workforce report, (3) burnout in EM, (4) their perception of EM's standing in the health care landscape, and (5) early EM experience and exposure. Conclusions: This qualitative study identified five major themes in the career decisions of senior medical students who seriously considered EM but chose another specialty. This study investigated the effectiveness of nanoparticles and chemical inducers in managing onion white rot caused by Sclerotium cepivorum. The pathogen severely threatens onion cultivation, resulting in significant yield losses and economic setbacks. Traditional fungicides, though effective, raise environmental concerns, prompting a shift toward eco-friendly alternatives. In this study, four S. cepivorum isolates were utilized, each exhibiting varying degrees of pathogenicity, with the third isolate from Abu-Hamad demonstrating the highest potency. During the in vitro studies, three nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated, including Fe3O4 NPs, Cu NPs, and ZnO NPs, which demonstrated the potential to inhibit mycelial growth, with salicylic acid and Fe3O4 NPs exhibiting synergistic effects. In vivo, these nanoparticles reduced the disease incidence and severity, with Fe3O4 NPs at 1000–1400 ppm resulting in 65.0–80.0% incidence and 80.0–90.0% severity. ZnO NPs had the most positive impact on the chlorophyll content, while Cu NPs had minimal effects. At 1000 ppm, Fe3O4 NPs had variable effects on the phenolic compounds (total: 6.28, free: 4.81, related: 2.59), while ZnO NPs caused minor fluctuations (total: 3.60, free: 1.82, related: 1.73). For the chemical inducers, salicylic acid reduced the disease (10.0% incidence, 25.0% to 10.0% severity) and promoted growth, and it elevated the chlorophyll values and enhanced the phenolic compounds in infected onions. Potassium phosphate dibasic (PDP) had mixed effects, and ascorbic acid showed limited efficacy toward disease reduction. However, PDP at 1400 ppm and ascorbic acid at 1000 ppm elevated the chlorophyll values and enhanced the phenolic compounds. Furthermore, this study extended to traditional fungicides, highlighting their inhibitory effects on S. cepivorum. Homeologue expression bias occurs when one progenitor copy of a gene is expressed at a higher level than the other in allopolyploids. Morphological variation, including differences in flower colour, exists between natural and synthetic allopolyploids of Nicotiana tabacum and their progenitors. In this study, we use a comparative transcriptomic approach to investigate gene expression differences as well as homeologue bias in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway (FBP) in these accessions. We do not observe reciprocal homeologue bias between dark and light pink allopolyploids, but the production of light pink flowers is correlated with high FLAVONOL SYNTHASE:DIHYDROFLAVONOL-4-REDUCTASE (FLS:DFR) ratio at 60% of anthesis length due to delayed activation of DFR in these accessions. We do find that natural allopolyploids have stronger homeologue bias than synthetic allopolyploids in both FBP genes and across the transcriptome. While there is no overall subgenome dominance, there is a bias towards expression of N. tomentosiformis homeologues in FBP genes; however, the magnitude of this bias is reduced in allopolyploids compared to the progenitors, suggesting that N. sylvestris homeologues play an active role in the development of flower colour in N. tabacum allopolyploids. In addition, synthetic allopolyploids tend to exhibit trans regulation of homeologues whereas natural allopolyploids often have evolved cis -regulatory differences between homeologues since their origin. This study proposes an automatic findings generation method that performs in-context few-shot learning of a visual language model. The automatic generation of findings can reduce the burden of creating inspection records for infrastructure facilities. However, the findings must include the opinions and judgments of engineers, in addition to what is recognized from the image; therefore, the direct generation of findings is still challenging. With this background, we introduce in-context few-short learning that focuses on image similarity and text diversity in the visual language model, which enables text output with a highly accurate understanding of both vision and language. Based on a novel in-context few-shot learning strategy, the proposed method comprehensively considers the characteristics of the distress image and diverse findings and can achieve high accuracy in generating findings. The development of novel anticoagulants requires a comprehensive investigational approach that is capable of characterizing different aspects of antithrombotic activity. The necessary experiments include both in vitro assays and studies on animal models. The required in vivo approaches include the assessment of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles and studies of hemorrhagic and antithrombotic effects. Comparison of anticoagulants with different mechanisms of action and administration types requires unification of the experiment scheme and its adaptation to existing laboratory conditions. The rodent thrombosis models in combination with the assessment of hemostasis parameters and hematological analysis are the classic methods for conducting preclinical studies. We report an approach for the comparative study of the activity of different anticoagulants in vivo, including the investigation of pharmacodynamics and the assessment of hemorrhagic effects (tail-cut bleeding model) and pathological thrombus formation (inferior vena cava stenosis model of venous thrombosis). The reproducibility and uniformity of our set of experiments were illustrated on unfractionated heparin and dabigatran etexilate (the most common pharmaceuticals in antithrombic therapy) as comparator drugs and an experimental drug variegin from the tick Amblyomma variegatum. Variegin is notorious since it is a potential analogue of bivalirudin (Angiomax, Novartis AG, Basel, Switzerland), which is now being actively introduced into antithrombotic therapy. The demand for high-precision positioning has risen substantially in modern urban settings. In that regard, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) offer several advantages such as global coverage, real-time capability, high accuracy, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness. The accuracy of GNSS-based positioning, however, suffers in urban environments due to signal blockage, reflection, and diffraction, which makes it difficult to fix ambiguities correctly within a real-time kinematic (RTK). To address this issue, this paper applies random sample consensus (RANSAC) to develop a novel single-epoch triple-frequency RTK positioning method. In our proposed method, the ambiguities of the extra-wide-lane, wide-lane, and original frequencies are resolved sequentially. RANSAC then detects and excludes incorrectly fixed ambiguities. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, two static experiments (cases 1 and 2) and one dynamic experiment (case 3) were conducted in representative urban areas. The findings demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms all comparative methods in positional availability, with comparable positional accuracy in terms of root-mean-square errors (RMSEs). In cases 1, 2, and 3, the proposed method achieves 3D RMSEs of 2.74, 4.29, and 20.35 cm, and the positional availabilities of 100%, 75.0%, and 73.1%, using a 10-degree mask angle (and a carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0) threshold 35 dB-Hz). The corresponding RMSEs (positional availabilities) of comparative methods are from 1.51 to 4.04 cm (75.7 to 96.3%) in case 1, 4.19 to 7.78 cm (34.5 to 49.9%) in case 2, and 23.52 to 37.54 cm (15.4 to 33.9%) in case 3, respectively. Compared to these methods, the proposed method shows improvements of positional availabilities between 3.7 and 24.3 percentage points in case 1, between 25.1 and 40.5 percentage points in case 2, and between 39.2 and 57.7 percentage points in case 3. Background This study compared the effectiveness of the traditional and revised one-bag protocols for pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) management. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study included children diagnosed with DKA upon admission between 2012 and 2019. Our institution reevaluated and streamlined the traditional one-bag protocol (revised one-bag protocol). The revised one-bag protocol rehydrated all pediatric DKA patients with dextrose (5 g/100 ml) containing 0.45% NaCl at a rate of 3500 ml/m2 per 24 h after the first 1 h bolus of normal saline, regardless of age or degree of dehydration. This study examined acidosis recovery times and the frequency of healthcare provider interventions to maintain stable blood glucose levels. Results The revised one-bag protocol demonstrated a significantly shorter time to acidosis recovery than the traditional protocol (12.67 and 18.20 h, respectively; p  < 0.001). The revised protocol group required fewer interventions for blood glucose control, with an average of 0.25 dextrose concentration change orders per patient, compared to 1.42 in the traditional protocol group (p  < 0.001). Insulin rate adjustments were fewer in the revised protocol group, averaging 0.52 changes per patient, vs. 2.32 changes in the traditional protocol group (p  < 0.001). Conclusion The revised one-bag protocol for pediatric DKA is both practical and effective. This modified DKA management achieved acidosis recovery more quickly and reduced blood glucose fluctuations compared with the traditional one-bag protocol. Solutions of N-chlorotaurine (NCT) are effective microbiocidal agents with a broad spectrum of pharmacological activity and outstanding tolerability. The main problem limiting their medical use is their instability, which is generally inherent in solutions of all chlorine-active compounds. In this work, we developed a new synthetic approach to the synthesis of such solutions, which consists in the activation of granular and fibrous polymeric materials with immobilized N-chlorosulfonamide groups, which act here as a chlorinating agent. It was shown that when such polymers are added to taurine solutions, NCT solutions with a chemical composition suitable for immediate medical use can be obtained. The stability of such solutions under various conditions was analyzed in comparison with NCTs obtained by the classical method from sodium hypochlorite. It was confirmed that the process of decomposition of all studied solutions obeys the kinetic laws of the first-order reaction. It was proven that solutions obtained from granular polymers are more stable both in terms of active chlorine concentration and in terms of pH, and their additional buffering is not needed. The stability of solutions decreases when they are stored in the presence of polymers used, with an increase in the excess of taurine and with acidification. The high sensitivity of all obtained solutions to UV radiation was also noted. The antimicrobial properties of NCT solutions obtained from polymers are not inferior to those obtained from sodium hypochlorite at the same concentration of active chlorine. Considering the stability and compactness of the initial chlorine-active polymers, as well as the possibility of their multiple regeneration, the developed method can form the basis of the technology for obtaining multifunctional NCT solutions for medical purposes with the desired physical and chemical properties without using special equipment or specific reagents. Scholars generally argue that nationalism and secessionism pose important dilemmas for national, regional and global order. Yet, there is inadequate discussion on the varied contexts of nationalist secessionist movements and how they influence or are influenced by domestic and global forces. Addressing this concern, this article undertakes a three‐case comparison of the Western Togoland separatist movement in Ghana, Southwest and Northwest (Anglophone) Cameroon's secessionist movement and the movement for independent Catalonia in Spain. These dissimilar cases—both from Global South and North—enable a broader examination of how themes such as political history, state capacity and regional/continental organisations affect nationalist‐induced secessionist movements and the measures to address them. Using a thematic comparative approach, this article examines the relevant literature on secessionism, nationalism, regionalism and cognate fields to demonstrate that the dynamics and consequence of secessionist movements depend largely on four interwoven factors: (a) the internal organisation and support for the nationalists' course, (b) state capacity to handle uprisings, (c) political conditions and conflict context of neighbouring countries and (d) interest and (re)actions of regional bodies and international allies. Headhunting – the practice of acquiring human heads for ritual purposes – was historically widespread around the world. We hypothesize that headhunting represented a cultural response to frequent inter-tribal warfare and served as a mechanism to train warriors ready to defend their community. The practice was effective since, first, it allowed verification of warrior quality based on performance in headhunting raids and, second, it offered a system of rewards for men to develop and refine warfare skills. We use phylogenetic comparative methods and ethnographic data to empirically investigate this hypothesis in a sample of preindustrial Austronesian societies. Headhunting turns out to be substantially more prevalent in societies exposed to frequent warfare, accounting for shared cultural ancestry and a host of potentially confounding characteristics. Furthermore, Bayesian estimation of correlated evolution models suggests that, consistent with our hypothesis, the adoption of headhunting typically followed increases in warfare frequency and the decline of this practice was preceded by reduced intergroup conflict. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether adding basal insulin to metformin in adults with early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) would increase emotional distress relative to other treatments. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) of adults with T2DM of <10 years' duration, HbA1c 6.8–8.5%, and taking metformin monotherapy randomly assigned participants to add insulin glargine U-100, sulfonylurea glimepiride, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, or the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor sitagliptin. The Emotional Distress Substudy enrolled 1,739 GRADE participants (mean [SD] age 58.0 [10.2] years, 32% female, 56% non-Hispanic White, 18% non-Hispanic Black, 17% Hispanic) and assessed diabetes distress and depressive symptoms every 6 months. Analyses examined differences at 1 year and over the 3-year follow-up. RESULTS: Across treatments, diabetes distress (−0.24, P < 0.0001) and depressive symptoms (−0.67, P < 0.0001) decreased over 1 year. Diabetes distress was lower at 1 year for the glargine group than for the other groups combined (−0.10, P = 0.002). Diabetes distress was also lower for liraglutide than for glimepiride or sitagliptin (−0.10, P = 0.008). Over the 3-year follow-up, there were no significant group differences in total diabetes distress; interpersonal diabetes distress remained lower for those assigned to liraglutide. No significant differences were observed for depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to expectations, this randomized trial found no evidence for a deleterious effect of basal insulin on emotional distress. Glargine lowered diabetes distress modestly at 1 year rather than increasing it. Liraglutide also reduced diabetes distress at 1 year. OBJECTIVE: Diabetes is associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Information on the relationship between HRQoL and glucose-lowering medications in recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D) is limited. We assessed changes in HRQoL in participants with T2D receiving metformin plus one of four glucose-lowering medications in Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 5,047 participants, baseline mean age 57 years, with <10 years T2D duration and glycated hemoglobin level 6.8–8.5% and taking metformin monotherapy, were randomly assigned to glargine, glimepiride, liraglutide, or sitagliptin. HRQoL was evaluated at baseline for 4,885 participants, and at years 1, 2, and 3, with use of the self-administered version of the Quality of Well-being Scale (QWB-SA) and SF-36 physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summary scales. Linear models were used to analyze changes in HRQoL over time in intention-to-treat analyses. RESULTS: None of the medications worsened HRQoL. There were no differences in QWB-SA or MCS by treatment group at any time point. PCS scores improved with liraglutide versus other groups at year 1 only. Greater weight loss during year 1 explained half the improvement in PCS scores with liraglutide versus glargine and glimepiride. Liraglutide participants in the upper tertile of baseline BMI showed the greatest improvement in PCS scores at year 1. CONCLUSIONS: Adding liraglutide to metformin in participants within 10 years of T2D diagnosis showed improvement in the SF-36 PCS in comparisons with the other medications at 1 year, which was no longer significant at years 2 and 3. OBJECTIVE: We examined longitudinal associations between emotional distress (specifically, depressive symptoms and diabetes distress) and medication adherence in Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE), a large randomized controlled trial comparing four glucose-lowering medications added to metformin in adults with relatively recent-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The Emotional Distress Substudy assessed medication adherence, depressive symptoms, and diabetes distress in 1,739 GRADE participants via self-completed questionnaires administered biannually up to 3 years. We examined baseline depressive symptoms and diabetes distress as predictors of medication adherence over 36 months. Bidirectional visit-to-visit relationships were also examined. Treatment satisfaction, beliefs about medication, diabetes care self-efficacy, and perceived control over diabetes were evaluated as mediators of longitudinal associations. RESULTS: At baseline, mean ± SD age of participants (56% of whom were White, 17% Hispanic/Latino, 18% Black, and 66% male) was 58.0 ± 10.2 years, diabetes duration 4.2 ± 2.8 years, HbA1c 7.5% ± 0.5%, and medication adherence 89.9% ± 11.1%. Higher baseline depressive symptoms and diabetes distress were independently associated with lower adherence over 36 months (P < 0.001). Higher depressive symptoms and diabetes distress at one visit predicted lower adherence at the subsequent 6-month visit (P < 0.0001) but not vice versa. Treatment assignment did not moderate relationships. Patient-reported concerns about diabetes medications mediated the largest percentage (11.9%–15.5%) of the longitudinal link between emotional distress and adherence. CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms and diabetes distress both predict lower adherence to glucose-lowering medications over time among adults with T2DM.
