The impact of preserved museum specimens is transforming and increasing by three-dimensional (3D) imaging that creates high-fidelity online digital specimens. Through examples from the openVertebrate (oVert) Thematic Collections Network, we describe how we created a digitization community dedicated to the shared vision of making 3D data of specimens available and the impact of these data on a broad audience of scientists, students, teachers, artists, and more. High-fidelity digital 3D models allow people from multiple communities to simultaneously access and use scientific specimens. Based on our multiyear, multi-institution project, we identify significant technological and social hurdles that remain for fully realizing the potential impact of digital 3D specimens.

Spatial interactions among anatomical elements help to identify topological factors behind morphological variation and can be investigated through network analysis. Here, a whole‐brain network model of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes, Blumenbach 1776) is presented, based on macroanatomical divisions, and compared with a previous equivalent model of the human brain. The goal was to contrast which regions are essential in the geometric balance of the brains of the two species, to compare underlying phenotypic patterns of spatial variation, and to understand how these patterns might have influenced the evolution of human brain morphology. The human and chimpanzee brains share morphologically complex inferior‐medial regions and a topological organization that matches the spatial constraints exerted by the surrounding braincase. These shared topological features are interesting because they can be traced back to the Chimpanzee‐Human Last Common Ancestor, 7–10 million years ago. Nevertheless, some key differences are found in the human and chimpanzee brains. In humans, the temporal lobe, particularly its deep and medial limbic aspect (the parahippocampal gyrus), is a crucial node for topological complexity. Meanwhile, in chimpanzees, the cerebellum is, in this sense, more embedded in an intricate spatial position. This information helps to interpret brain macroanatomical change in fossil hominids. Until the mid-nineteenth century, "physiology" was a comprehensive theory of life, expounded and shaped by Johannes P. Müller (1801–1858). Biologists and medical doctors still refer to him today. In the summer term of 1851, Müller gave a lecture on the Comparative Anatomy of animals. This lecture was attended and recorded by Ernst Zeller (1830–1902), a future physician and zoologist, and has recently been published together with a German transcript. In this paper, we situate Johannes Müller within the intellectual history of his time. Through his "empirical idealism," we show how he opposed the speculative tendencies of the romantic understanding of nature, the emerging evolutionism, and the growing splits in the natural sciences. Müller focused on recognizing living nature as a whole and realizing ideal "phenomena" through his empirical research. He considered the notion of the soul of the world. Müller's lecture transcript serves as a poignant testament to German scientific culture in the mid-nineteenth century, a few years before the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species. Morphology has been the fundamental and most important source of information in biology. We strongly believe that in the current molecular era of biology, comparative morphology still has an important role to play in understanding life on Earth and ecosystem functioning, bridging the knowledge gap between evolution, systematics, and ecology. Frogs have a highly conserved body plan, yet they employ a diverse array of locomotor modes, making them ideal organisms for investigating the relationships between morphology and locomotor function, in particular whether anatomical complexity is a prerequisite for functional complexity. We use diffusible iodine contrast‐enhanced microCT (diceCT) imaging to digitally dissect the gross muscle anatomy of the pelvis and hindlimbs for 30 species of frogs representing five primary locomotor modes, including the first known detailed dissection for some of the world's smallest frogs, forming the largest digital comparative analysis of musculoskeletal structure in any vertebrate clade to date. By linking musculoskeletal dissections and phylogenetic comparative methods, we then quantify and compare relationships between anatomy and function across over 160 million years of anuran evolution. In summary, we have found that bone lengths and pelvic crest sizes are generally not reliable predictors of muscle sizes, which highlights important implications for future palaeontological studies. Our investigation also presents previously unreported differences in muscle anatomy between frogs specialising in different locomotor modes, including several of the smallest frog hindlimb muscles, which are extremely difficult to extract and measure using traditional approaches. Furthermore, we find evidence of many‐to‐one and one‐to‐many mapping of form to function across the phylogeny. Additionally, we perform the first quantitative analysis of how the degree of muscle separation can differ between frogs. We find evidence that phylogenetic history is the key contributing factor to muscle separation in the pelvis and thigh, while the separation of shank muscles is influenced more strongly by locomotor mode. Using flipped teaching modality, a student-centered approach, in community college courses remains an understudied area. This study explored the effectiveness of unflipped (UF), partially flipped (PF), and fully flipped (FF) teaching formats within the confines of an accelerated 8-week Introduction to Human Anatomy course at a community college. The purpose of this study was to examine flipped teaching in an accelerated anatomy course by comparing final examination scores between the UF, PF, and FF modalities, compare the effectiveness of flipped teaching between a regular (16-week) and an accelerated anatomy course, evaluate the effect of different teaching modalities on male and female students between a regular and an accelerated course; and examine UF, PF, and FF among the above-median and the below-median students. Students in the FF sections were required to read relevant chapter(s) in the textbook and review slides before class. Students in the PF sections were required to read the textbook and slides for 25% of the chapters. All students took the same final exams and similar section exams. Final exam scores were higher in the regular 16-week course than in the 8-week course for UF (p = 0.0219) and PF (p = 0.0183) modalities. The 16-week course had higher final examination scores (p = 0.0492; n = 65) than the 8-week course. Male students scored lower in the 8-week FF course (49.42 ± 13.72) than in the 8-week PF (p = 0.006) and 16-week FF (p = 0.0008) formats and also compared to female students in the 8-week FF course (p = 0.0121). Above-median students in the 8-week course had significantly lower scores in the FF modality (71.35 ± 7.01) compared to PF (80.92 ± 5.30) (p = 0.009). Below-median students in the 8-week course had lower scores in the FF modality (52.25 ± 11.48) compared to UF (p = 0.0113) and PF (p = 0.04). In conclusion, FF in a 16-week anatomy course resulted in higher final exam scores than in the 8-week course. The 8-week FF format affected male student scores. Both above- and below-median groups experienced similar effects when exposed to FF within the accelerated course. In this study, we report the current palynological characteristics of Iberis taxa naturally distributed in Turkey. The pollen morphology of 10 native Iberis taxa was investigated across 35 populations. In the light of our taxonomic review of Turkish Iberis taxa, a detailed palynological description is provided for the genus. The palynological characteristics of Iberis taxa were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) to confirm their diagnostic importance at a specific and/or generic level. We evaluated different characteristics including polar axis, equatorial axis, colpus length and width, amb diameter, apocolpium, exine structure, and sculpture. Pollen characteristics were measured on 30 pollen grains from each specimen under LM. Details of the exine sculpture were also analyzed under SEM. Generally, the pollen grains of the genus Iberis are small to medium sized, radially symmetrical, isopolar, spheroidal, almost tricolpate, and rarely syncolpate or tetracolpate. The exine sculpture is reticulate, and the structure is semitectate. Two pollen types for the genus were identified based on the colpus surface feature: Iberis type I (with non-ornamented colpus surface) and Iberis type II (with ornamented colpus surface). Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to reveal patterns and groupings within the related taxa concerning pollen morphology. It was found that pollen size may provide a limited but valuable metric for distinguishing Iberis species. However, due to the wide variation in some populations, it would be useful to have palynological data alongside chromosomal, molecular and macro-micromorphological data to resolve the complexity in the taxonomy of the genus. Background: Marmosets, Callithrix spp, are small New World monkeys that have gained importance as an experimental animal model for human. Despite its use, information on its renal morphometry, vascularization, and location are limited. Therefore, this study will supply basic anatomy for applied studies and for comparative anatomy. Methods: Fifty cadavers of Callithrix spp were collected on highways from the Atlantic Forest biome, identified and injected with a 10% formaldehyde solution. Later, the specimens were dissected and the measurements and topography of the kidneys and renal vessels were recorded. Both left and right kidneys were significantly larger in females. Results: In the specimens studied, the average body length was 20.00 ± 2.46 cm in males and 20.50 ± 1.98 cm in females (p =.43). The kidneys of the Callithrix spp. were symmetrical in shape and resembled a "bean." They were also pale brown with a smooth surface. In males, the most frequent location of the right kidney was at the L1–L2 level (92%), while the location of the left kidney was between L2 and L3 (76%). In females, the most frequent location of the right kidney was at the L1–L2 level (56%), while the location of the left kidney was between L2 and L3 (32%) (Table 1). However, in seven (28%) males and nine (36%) females, the kidneys were at the same level. Conclusions: In both sexes, there was a positive and significant linear correlation between body length and kidney length. Regardless of the variable location of the kidneys in both sides and in either sexe, the right kidney was always located more cranially than the left, similar to observations in other non‐human primates. The mouthparts and antennal sensilla play an important role in insect foraging, recognition of hosts, and reproduction. The family Hesperiidae (order Lepidoptera), commonly known as skipper butterflies, has lineages with different habitat selection and host preferences which may be closely related to different types of sensilla. In this study, the ultrastructure of the proboscis sensilla of 17 species (5 subfamilies, 16 genera) and antennal sensilla of 13 species (5 subfamilies, 13 genera) of Hesperiidae were compared using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three types of proboscis sensilla and eight types of antennal sensilla were ultimately observed among these selected species. We next measured some major characteristic values of the sensilla on the proboscides and antennae. Comparative analysis reveals differences in sensilla types and morphological characteristics among different subfamilies and genera. These variations are potentially related to skippers' adaptive feeding strategies and dietary preferences. The aim of this study was to describe the origin and branches of the brachial plexus nerves in S. villosus, as well as the innervated musculature, contributing information to the field of comparative animal anatomy and providing insights for applied studies. Fifteen adult cadavers (eight males and seven females), previously identified, sexed, and fixed with a 10% aqueous formaldehyde solution were used. The patients underwent digital radiographic examinations of the cervical region to characterize the number of cervical vertebrae. The nerves were dissected to visualize the innervation of the intrinsic and extrinsic musculature of the thoracic limb. With the assistance of a costotome, the vertebrae were removed until visualization of the spinal cord and the roots, which gave rise to the nerve branches. The specimens presented seven cervical vertebrae, and the brachial plexus was characterized as postfixed, formed by connections between the last four cervical spinal nerves (C5, C6, C7, and C8) and the first two thoracic nerves (T1 and T2). The cranial, middle, and caudal trunks originate from the suprascapularis, subscapular, axillary, musculocutaneous, radial, median, and ulnar nerves for the intrinsic musculature and from the cranial pectoral, caudal pectoral, lateral thoracic, long thoracic, and thoracodorsal nerves for the extrinsic musculature. The ventral branches that contributed the most to plexus formation in the right antimer were C5 and C8, while in the left antimer, they were C7. The resulting nerves and the innervation for extrinsic and intrinsic musculature were similar to those observed in other rodents and representatives of the Mammalia class in general. Tachinidae is a large family of flies, but studies on its antennal morphology and ultrastructure are still scarce. Thus, the male and female antennae of Neoeuantha aucta (Wiedmann) were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The three antennal segments are densely covered with microtrichia, with postpedicel being the one that carries the greatest diversity of sensilla. In total, eight types of sensillar structures were observed: trichoid, basiconic (three subtypes), coeloconic, chaetic, setiferous plaques, and pedicellar button. The s. trichoid and s. basiconic have a porous wall, indicating a chemoreceptor function. A central pore was found in the pedicellar button, possibly with mechanoreceptor and chemoreceptor function. Another highlight is the numerous sensory pits covered by microtrichia in the postpedicel, housing only one type of sensilla each. Our results were compared with those available for Tachinidae and other families of dipterans, mainly those of Calyptratae, and provide the basis for future investigations in sensory functions related to the behavior of parasitoid flies, as well as for studies of comparative morphology. In recent years, fluorescence microscopy has revitalized the study of invertebrate comparative morphology. Here we explore the usefulness of combining confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and cuticular autofluorescence to examine the taxonomically challenging marine planktonic "y-larvae" (Pancrustacea: Facetotecta). To gauge the effectiveness of CLSM with autofluorescence in producing taxonomically useful images, we applied it to seven distinct y-naupliar species or morphospecies that had previously undergone scrutiny by other techniques. The specimens were part of a museum collection of glycerin-jelly slides of exuviae of last-stage y-nauplii, a key instar for studying the taxonomy of y-larvae. For Hansenocaris demodex, the level of detail obtained from a single specimen was comparable to that previously obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For Hansenocaris aquila, revisiting the original holotype specimen resulted in a dramatic increase in our understanding of the species' morphology, including taxonomically pivotal information about its spinose labrum and a digitally rotated lateral view. CLSM analyses of the other five specimens, which represented a broad spectrum of y-naupliar morphology, efficiently generated more such information. Novel observations were made concerning putative external rudiments of both the first and second maxillae in late nauplii as well as the extreme dorso-ventral flattening of some naupliar types. CLSM observation of museum slides of naupliar exuviae using cuticular autofluorescence thus shows great promise of becoming an excellent tool for studying the morphology and taxonomy of y-larvae, and we suggest that this technique might also profitably be applied to other forms of larval exuviae. ABSTRACT Turbinals are bony or cartilaginous structures that are present in the nasal cavity of most tetrapods. They are involved in key functions such as olfaction, heat, and moisture conservation, as well as protection of the respiratory tract. Despite recent studies that challenged long‐standing hypotheses about their physiological and genomic correlation, turbinals remain largely unexplored, particularly for non‐mammalian species. Herein, we review and synthesise the current knowledge of turbinals using an integrative approach that includes comparative anatomy, physiology, histology and genomics. In addition, we provide synonyms and correspondences of tetrapod turbinals from about 80 publications. This work represents a first step towards drawing hypotheses of homology for the whole clade, and provides a strong basis to develop new research avenues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris) is an endangered species, endemic to the San Francisco Bay Estuary, that co‐occurs with the more broadly distributed species, the western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis). Despite their considerable external morphological similarities, the northern subspecies of salt marsh harvest mice have relatively longer and thicker tails than do western harvest mice, which may be related to their abilities to climb emergent marsh vegetation to avoid tidal inundation. We used micro‐CT to compare post‐cranial skeletal anatomy between the salt marsh and western harvest mouse, to examine whether the salt marsh harvest mouse's restriction to brackish marshes is associated with skeletal adaptations for scansorial locomotion. We found that salt marsh harvest mice exhibited a deeper 3rd caudal vertebra, a more caudally located longest tail vertebra, craniocaudally longer tail vertebrae, and a longer digit III proximal phalanx than western harvest mice. These phalangeal and vertebral characteristics are known to decrease body rotations during climbing, increase contact with substrates, and decrease fall susceptibility in arboreal mammals, suggesting that the salt marsh harvest mouse may be morphologically specialized for scansorial locomotion, adaptive for its dynamic wetland environment. The study of tooth morphology is a critical component of the dental curriculum, highlighting the importance for dental students to acquire comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the complex structure of teeth. This study compared the educational outcomes of two student cohorts in a tooth morphology course, using traditional methods for the control group and additional digital video-based resources for the experimental group. We hypothesized that early integration of digital resources would significantly reduce the learning time. We retrospectively analyzed two groups of Master of Dentistry students. The control group (42 students) was taught using the traditional 'tooth puzzle' method, while the experimental group (42 students) supplemented traditional teaching with digital video-based tools developed by our department. Both groups' curricula culminated in a practical post-course test requiring the identification of 40 teeth, along with a mid-course test to track the students' learning progression. The number and type of incorrectly identified teeth were recorded. The mid-course test showed significant performance differences. The control group had a median (Q1, Q3) value of faults of 12.0 (7.8, 20.5), whereas the respective value for the experimental group was 4.0 (0.0, 8.0) (p < 0.001). In the control group, none achieved faultless results, with only two students (4.8%) having at most two faults, and six students (14.3%) having no more than four faults. The control group averaged 13.5 faults per student, with 19 students (45.2%) failing the test. Conversely, the experimental group showed improved performance: 12 students (28.6%) had no faults, and 25 students (59.5%) had four or fewer faults. The experimental group averaged 5.2 faults per student, with only four students (9.5%) failing. By the end of the course, both groups achieved commendable results on the practical tooth identification test. The experimental group slightly outperformed the control group, though the difference was not significant. The median (Q1, Q3) values were 0.0 (0.0, 2.5) and 1.0 (0.0, 4.5) for the experimental and control groups, respectively (p = 0.372). Teaching root canal anatomy has traditionally been reliant on static methods, but recent studies have explored the potential of advanced technologies like augmented reality (AR) to enhance learning and address the limitations of traditional training methods, such as the requirement for spatial imagination and the inability to simulate clinical scenarios fully. This study evaluated the potential of AR as a tool for teaching root canal anatomy in preclinical training in endodontics for predoctoral dental students. Six cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of teeth were selected. Board-certified endodontist and radiologist recorded the tooth type and classification of root canals. Then, STereoLithography (STL) files of the same images were imported into a virtual reality (VR) application and viewed through a VR head-mounted display. Forty-three third-year dental students were asked questions about root canal anatomy based on the CBCT images, and then, after the AR model. The time to respond to each question and feedback was recorded. Student responses were paired, and the difference between CBCT and AR scores was examined using a paired-sample t-test and set to p = 0.05. Students demonstrated a significant improvement in their ability to answer questions about root canal anatomy after utilizing the AR model (p < 0.05). Female participants demonstrated significantly higher AR scores compared to male participants. However, gender did not significantly influence overall test scores. Furthermore, students required significantly less time to answer questions after using the AR model (M = 4.09, SD = 3.55) compared to the CBCT method (M = 15.21, SD = 8.01) (p < 0.05). This indicates that AR may improve learning efficiency alongside comprehension. In a positive feedback survey, 93% of students reported that the AR simulation led to a better understanding of root canal anatomy than traditional CBCT interpretation. Thyreophora is a taxon of dinosaurs composed of Stegosauria and Ankylosauria, whose members have been known to utilise their tails as powerful defensive weapons. Remains of these dinosaurs are scarce; the Portuguese taxon, Miragaia longicollum, known from three individuals, provides precious pieces of information on the anatomy of these rare animals. This study estimates the stress resistance of a stegosaurian tail and uses Multi-Body Dynamics Analysis (MBDA) to properly simulate the movements of the tail of M. longicollum. The results show that the tail of M. longicollum can achieve high speeds and generate significant pressures, akin to those observed in other tyreophoran dinosaurs. Such high speeds would potentially generate powerful strikes and would inflict injuries on predators. However, the caudal spines of M. longicollum, despite being larger than those of Stegosaurus stenops, have worse stress-bearing performances than those of S. stenops, due to their different morphology. Investigating the complex biomechanics governing the tail of a dinosaur, such as M. longicollum, can have significant implications across various disciplines. Investigating biomechanics in extinct species offers valuable insights into comparative anatomy and physiology, facilitating connections between ancient and contemporary life forms. Palaeontologists and evolutionary biologists might use this information to better comprehend the dinosaur movement, which would advance our understanding of ancient ecosystems and have an impact on how we interpret the behaviour of contemporary animals. The knowledge obtained from such study might provide useful biomimicry lessons for robotics engineers, serving as inspiration for the creation of more adaptable and agile robotic systems. This research contributes to the reconstruction of the knowledge and the dynamics of the use of spaces with plant resources, on a regional scale, between 8100 and 4500 years BP in the southern Argentine Puna, taking into account that during this period, which corresponds to the Middle Holocene, there were climatic changes that affected the distribution and density of resource patches and optimal/non-optimal or marginal areas. The Holocene is characterized in the Puna by a pronounced aridity that deepens during the mentioned period, therefore changes related to the distribution of plant resources have occurred. Framed in this perspective, this work focuses on the Cueva Salamanca 1 site, located in the middle-lower course of the Las Pitas River, microregion of Antofagasta de la Sierra, Catamarca. The general objective is to continue the analysis of the production of technofactures in this site, emphasizing the catchment areas and the origin of the resources used as raw materials. The knowledge of the species used and their origin determined the steps to follow from a methodological point of view: surveys around the archaeological site, collection and identification of plant species that develop in the area, identification of archaeological species through studies of comparative anatomy in relation to the current taxa present in the microregion, using the SI Herbarium for the identification of non-local species. Scottish Fold cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus 1758) are one of the most well‐known and popular cat breeds in the world, characterized by their folded ears attached to the head. Very frequently, cats fall prey of different trauma and accidents that can cause bone fractures especially in the metapodial bones. The method of radiometry is used in veterinary practice to visualize and measure different parts of the animal skeleton. The aim of this study was to assess the linear parameters derived from radiographic images of the metacarpals and metatarsals in Scottish Fold cats and additionally detecting potential sexual dimorphism. Radiographic images of 24 adult Scottish Fold cats (12 male and 12 females) of different ages and weights were analysed. Six linear measurements of the metapodial bones were evaluated to investigate any differences between the sexes. The linear radiometric measurements of the five metacarpals (MC1‐5) and the four metatarsals (MT2‐5) bones were larger in male metapodial bones than that of female cats. The maximum length (Ml) of the MC1 and MC2 was statistically different between sex, respectively, (p = 0.001) and (p = 0.05). The others metacarpal bones were different in mostly all linear parameters but not statistically significant. The most significant differences between sexes were observed in the parameter of width proximal end (Wp) of MC1‐3 (p = 0.001) and MC4 (p = 0.05). More statistical different was MT2 and less MT3. The linear parameter of Bd of the MT4 was the most different statistically between sex (p = 0.001). The results of the study will be useful in function of comparative anatomy, in veterinary clinical practice, in zoo archaeology and in the veterinary forensic investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses advancements in knee arthroplasty and the challenges associated with the patellofemoral joint. It highlights the fall of the dogma of mechanical alignment (MA) and the rise of kinematic alignment (KA) in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The article explains that off-the-shelf TKA implants may not be compatible with KA, leading to patellofemoral complications. It also explores the evolutionary perspective of the femoral condyles and trochlea and the need for individualized TKA implants to optimize patellofemoral and tibiofemoral kinematics. Lepidodexia Brauer and Bergenstamm is one of the most speciose genera of flesh flies found in the Western Hemisphere. With approximately 200 species and 33 subgenera, Lepidodexia generic level diagnosis primarily relies on male terminalia features. However, the monophyly of Lepidodexia has been questioned, and for some taxa, the male terminalia are poorly known, leading to uncertainty about the genus delimitation and internal relationships. To address these issues, we performed the first comprehensive phylogeny of Lepidodexia , covering 85 % of its subgenera. Our results enabled us to establish a clear diagnosis for Lepidodexia and to identify 14 groups of subgenera based on key morphological features. The taxonomic status of the subgenera Archimimus , Halliosca , Xylocamptops and the species Lepidodexia angustifrons is addressed. Furthermore, our study provides a foundation for future taxonomic and evolutionary research on this diverse and ecologically important genus of flesh flies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Documenting changes in the distribution and abundance of a given taxon requires historical data. In the absence of long-term monitoring data collected throughout the range of a taxon, conservation biologists often rely on preserved museum specimens to determine the past or present, putative geographic distribution. Distributional data for the Houston Toad (Anaxyrus houstonensis) has consistently been confounded by similarities with a sympatric congener, the Dwarf American Toad (A. americanus charlesmithi), both in monitoring data derived from chorusing surveys, and in historical data via museum specimens. In this case, misidentification can have unintended impacts on conservation efforts, where the Houston Toad is federally endangered, and the Dwarf American Toad is of least concern. Previously published reports have compared these two taxon on the basis of their male advertisement call and morphological appearance, often with the goal of using these characters to substantiate their taxonomic status prior to the advent of DNA sequencing technology. However, numerous studies report findings that contradict one another, and no consensus on the true differences or similarities can be drawn. Here, we use contemporary recordings of wild populations of each taxon to test for quantifiable differences in male advertisement call. Additionally, we quantitatively examine a subset of vouchered museum specimens representing each taxon to test previously reported differentiating morphometric characters used to distinguish among other Bufonids of East-Central Texas, USA. Finally, we assemble and qualitatively evaluate a database of photographs representing catalogued museum vouchers for each taxon to determine if their previously documented historic ranges may be larger than are currently accepted. Our findings reveal quantifiable differences between two allopatric congeners with respect to their male advertisement call, whereas we found similarities among their detailed morphology. Additionally, we report on the existence of additional, historically overlooked, museum records for the Houston Toad in the context of its putative historic range, and discuss errors associated with the curation of these specimens whose identity and nomenclature have not been consistent through time. These results bookend decades of disagreement regarding the morphology, voice, and historic distribution of these taxa, and alert practitioners of conservation efforts for the Houston Toad to previously unreported locations of occurrence. Hardwoods are complex heterogeneous and orthotropic structures that have evolved to the present day, adapting to successive climate episodes to prosper on Earth. Attributing a specific functionality to individual hardwood elements is difficult because of their interconnection in this heterogeneous three-dimensional network. Leaf and scape anatomy of Allium glandulosum Link & Otto, Allium kunthii G. Don, Allium scaposum Benth., and Allium durangoense Traub were studied comparatively for the first time. The aim was to analyze and provide characters with a possible taxonomic value. The samples collected in the field were processed using a conventional paraffin-embedding technique. Some characteristics of foliar anatomical characters of Amerallium Traub were confirmed. The shape of the blade seen in cross-section presents an obovate depressed shape, except in A. glandulosum, which was obtriangular. Anatomical characteristics of the leaf and scape, such as the prominent cells of the epidermis, the thickening of cells adjacent to the vascular bundles, and the type of cuticle, allow the four species to be differentiated. The presence of papillose cuticle and prominent cells, as well as stomatal occlusive cells with anterior extensions, is reported for the first time for the genus. This article contributes to the evolving approaches that demonstrate the adaptability and everydayness of ideologies by exploring how contextual approaches can respond to the nuances of the ideology – foreign policy nexus in the African context and allow for a systematic comparative analysis. Drawing on Jonathan Maynard’s ideology-conflict thesis, Michael Freeden’s ideological morphology, and Marius Ostrowski’s comparative ideological morphology, it challenges the non-ideology thesis in African politics, arguing that the issue lies in the limitation of approaches, not the absence of ideology in foreign policymaking. The article demonstrates this by analyzing Ghana’s economic diplomacy, an area widely seen as non-ideological, across three administrations – Nkrumah, Rawlings and Kufuor. Applying the Ideological Contextualization Framework to the Ghanaian case, I argue that the varieties of Ghanaian nationalism characterized by its historically evolving components partly explain Ghana’s economic diplomacy. While the analysis in this article aims to further enhance the bid to see ideologies as phenomena that are ‘necessary, normal, and [which] facilitate (and reflect) political action’,1 it is a call for further empirical application of contextual frameworks. Determining the fundamental characteristics that define a face as "feminine" or "masculine" has long fascinated anatomists and plastic surgeons, particularly those involved in aesthetic and gender-affirming surgery. Previous studies in this area have relied on manual measurements, comparative anatomy, and heuristic landmark-based feature extraction. In this study, we collected retrospectively at Cedars Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) a dataset of 98 skull samples, which is the first dataset of this kind of 3D medical imaging. We then evaluated the accuracy of multiple deep learning neural network architectures on sex classification with this dataset. Specifically, we evaluated methods representing three different 3D data modeling approaches: Resnet3D, PointNet++, and MeshNet. Despite the limited number of imaging samples, our testing results show that all three approaches achieve AUC scores above 0.9 after convergence. PointNet++ exhibits the highest accuracy, while MeshNet has the lowest. Our findings suggest that accuracy is not solely dependent on the sparsity of data representation but also on the architecture design, with MeshNet's lower accuracy likely due to the lack of a hierarchical structure for progressive data abstraction. Furthermore, we studied a problem related to sex determination, which is the analysis of the various morphological features that affect sex classification. We proposed and developed a new method based on morphological gradients to visualize features that influence model decision making. The method based on morphological gradients is an alternative to the standard saliency map, and the new method provides better visualization of feature importance. Our study is the first to develop and evaluate deep learning models for analyzing 3D facial skull images to identify imaging feature differences between individuals assigned male or female at birth. Discussing homology relationships among secretory structures remains a relatively underexplored area in botanical research. These structures are widely dispersed within Malpighiales, one of the largest orders of eudicots. Within Malpighiales, both extranuptial and nuptial nectaries are present, and they do not seem homoplastic or share evolutionary connections. Particularly in Malpighiaceae, extensive research has focused on the ecological interactions mediated by glands. Botanists largely agree that elaiophores in sepals of Neotropical Malpighiaceae have evolved from extrafloral nectaries on leaves. However, the evolutionary origin of elaiophores has yet to be thoroughly examined, particularly in comparison to outgroups. This study provides empirical evidence on the ontogeny of elaiophores and investigates their evolutionary origins and homology relationships across different lineages of Malpighiales using comparative anatomy. Our findings suggest that elaiophores are likely homologous to extranuptial nectaries found in sepals of other Malpighiales lineages, originating from nectaries on leaves. This discussion is a starting point for future studies exploring the evolution of nectaries found in flowers, whether extranuptial or nuptial, and their potential origins from nectaries in vegetative organs such as leaves. Background: Evolution of novelty is a central theme in evolutionary biology, yet studying the origins of traits with an apparently discontinuous origin remains a major challenge. Venom systems are a well-suited model for the study of this phenomenon because they capture several aspects of novelty across multiple levels of biological complexity. However, while there is some knowledge on the evolution of individual toxins, not much is known about the evolution of venom systems as a whole. One way of shedding light on the evolution of new traits is to investigate less specialised serial homologues, i.e. repeated traits in an organism that share a developmental origin. This approach can be particularly informative in animals with repetitive body segments, such as centipedes. Results: Here, we investigate morphological and biochemical aspects of the defensive telopodal glandular organs borne on the posterior legs of venomous stone centipedes (Lithobiomorpha), using a multimethod approach, including behavioural observations, comparative morphology, proteomics, comparative transcriptomics and molecular phylogenetics. We show that the anterior venom system and posterior telopodal defence system are functionally convergent serial homologues, where one (telopodal defence) represents a model for the putative early evolutionary state of the other (venom). Venom glands and telopodal glandular organs appear to have evolved from the same type of epidermal gland (four-cell recto-canal type) and while the telopodal defensive secretion shares a great degree of compositional overlap with centipede venoms in general, these similarities arose predominantly through convergent recruitment of distantly related toxin-like components. Both systems are composed of elements predisposed to functional innovation across levels of biological complexity that range from proteins to glands, demonstrating clear parallels between molecular and morphological traits in the properties that facilitate the evolution of novelty. Conclusions: The evolution of the lithobiomorph telopodal defence system provides indirect empirical support for the plausibility of the hypothesised evolutionary origin of the centipede venom system, which occurred through functional innovation and gradual specialisation of existing epidermal glands. Our results thus exemplify how continuous transformation and functional innovation can drive the apparent discontinuous emergence of novelties on higher levels of biological complexity. This paper investigates conceptions of explanation, teleology, and analogy in the works of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) and Georges Cuvier (1769–1832). Richards (2000, 2002) and Zammito (2006, 2012, 2018) have argued that Kant's philosophy provided an obstacle for the project of establishing biology as a proper science around 1800. By contrast, Russell (1916), Outram (1986), and Huneman (2006, 2008) have argued, similar to suggestions from Lenoir (1989), that Kant's philosophy influenced the influential naturalist Georges Cuvier. In this article, I wish to expand on and further the work of Russell, Outram, and Huneman by adopting a novel perspective on Cuvier and considering (a) the similar conceptions of proper science and explanation of Kant and Cuvier, and (b) the similar conceptions of the role of teleology and analogy in the works of Kant and Cuvier. The similarities between Kant and Cuvier show, contrary to the interpretation of Richards and Zammito, that some of Kant's philosophical ideas, whether they derived from him or not, were fruitfully applied by some life scientists who wished to transform life sciences into proper sciences around 1800. Ernst Brücke's 1861 essay Die Elementarorganismen has often been cited as a watershed in the history of physiology as well as in the history of cell theory. In its time it was widely read as a reform of animal cell theory, shifting the concept of the cell away from Schleiden and Schwann's original cell schema of a membranous vesicle with a nucleus, and towards the protoplasm theory that had developed in botany, centered on the cell's living contents. It was also notorious for its arguments against the necessity of both the nucleus and the cell membrane. This article discusses the contributions of two scientists, Korbinian Brodmann and Olof Larsell, to the understanding of the human brain. Brodmann, a German neuropsychiatrist, mapped the cerebral cortex and identified 52 different regions known as Brodmann's areas. Larsell, a Swedish-American anatomist, developed a nomenclature system for mapping the cerebellum called "Larsell nomenclature." Their research laid the foundations for current advances in human brain anatomy. Despite this, their work is not widely known by neurologists, neuroanatomists, neuroradiologists, or neurosurgeons. This article presents a case of accidental retrieval of osteological remains by the police for which the intervention of specialised diagnostic skills is required in order to efficiently serve the justice system, leading to a correct identification of the examined species. In this instance two fused osteological elements were preliminarily considered by a coroner to be potentially belonging to the human species and could only be determined not to be so -- belonging instead to a non-human animal species -- by applying comparative osteological methodology. The discussed case also offers relevant insights into the taphonomic alterations caused by the environment in which the remains lay. Anomaluromorpha is a particularly puzzling suborder of Rodentia. Endemic to Africa, this clade includes the extant genera Idiurus, Anomalurus, Zenkerella, and Pedetes. These rodents present an hystricomorphous condition of the skull, characterized by a large infraorbital foramen, which evolved independently within the mouse‐related clade over a span of approximately 57 million years. They exhibit a high disparity in craniomandibular and dental morphology that has kept their phylogenetic affinities disputed for a long time. Given the past significance of masticatory morphotypes in establishing the classification of Rodentia, we propose to explore variations in the masticatory apparatus of Anomaluromorpha in order to evaluate whether its related features can offer additional data for systematics and contribute to our understanding of the complexity of hystricomorphy. In order to do so, we used traditional dissection and diffusible iodine‐based contrast‐enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) to accurately describe and compare the anatomy of the specimens. We found that the muscle morphology displays clear differentiation among each anomaluromorph taxonomic unit. Specifically, the masseteric complex of Anomaluromorpha exhibits distinctive synapomorphies such as the infraorbital part of the zygomaticomandibularis muscle being separated into a rostral and orbital part and an absence of a posterior part of the zygomaticomandibularis. Additionally, the orbital portion of the infraorbital part originates from a well‐marked ridge and fossa at the level of its area of origin on the anteromedial wall of the orbital cavity, a feature that is absent in other members of the mouse‐related clade. This evident bony feature, among others, is strongly associated with muscular anatomy and can contribute to ascertaining the taxonomic status of extinct representatives of the clade. Finally, we showed that the hystricomorphy of Anomaluromorpha largely differs from those of Ctenohystrica and Dipodoidea and that the definition of this morphotype is complex and cannot be reduced simply to the size of the opening of the infraorbital foramen. The evolution of archosaurs provides an important context for understanding the mechanisms behind major functional transformations in vertebrates, such as shifts from sprawling to erect limb posture and the acquisition of powered flight. While comparative anatomy and ichnology of extinct archosaurs have offered insights into musculoskeletal and gait changes associated with locomotor transitions, reconstructing the evolution of motor control requires data from extant species. However, the scarcity of electromyography (EMG) data from the forelimb, especially of crocodylians, has hindered understanding of neuromuscular evolution in archosaurs. Here, we present EMG data for nine forelimb muscles from American alligators during terrestrial locomotion. Our aim was to investigate the modulation of motor control across different limb postures and examine variations in motor control across phylogeny and locomotor modes. Among the nine muscles examined, m. pectoralis, the largest forelimb muscle and primary shoulder adductor, exhibited significantly smaller mean EMG amplitudes for steps in which the shoulder was more adducted (i.e., upright). This suggests that using a more adducted limb posture helps to reduce forelimb muscle force and work during stance. As larger alligators use a more adducted shoulder and hip posture, the sprawling to erect postural transition that occurred in the Triassic could be either the cause or consequence of the evolution of larger body size in archosaurs. Comparisons of EMG burst phases among tetrapods revealed that a bird and turtle, which have experienced major musculoskeletal transformations, displayed distinctive burst phases in comparison to those from an alligator and lizard. These results support the notion that major shifts in body plan and locomotor modes among sauropsid lineages were associated with significant changes in muscle activation patterns. Diaphonization is a technique used in developmental biology, anatomy, and comparative morphology to visualize and study the internal structures of small organisms. In this study, we used diaphonization to visualize the development of chicken embryos (Gallus gallus). Diaphonization was performed on chicken eggs at different stages of development, from 10 to 13 days of incubation, and the resulting specimens were analyzed using microscopy. The results suggest that for embryos older than 14 days, a longer storage time in 1% KOH is recommended (approximately 30% longer incubation time compared to the original protocol). In the case of more developed chicken embryos, it is also recommended to carry out evisceration. Purple-spotted bigeyes Priacanthus tayenus Richardson (Priacanthidae) and bartail flathead Platycephalus indicus (Linnaeus) (Platycephalidae) were collected from the Arabian Gulf and examined for species of Monogenoidea (Polyonchoinea) from February to December 2020. Diplectanum robustitubum Wu & Li, 2003 and an undescribed species of Platycephalotrema Kritsky & Nitta, 2019 were recovered from the gill lamellae of these hosts, respectively. Diplectanum robustitubum from Iraq was redescribed and transferred to Oliveriplectanum Domingues & Boeger, 2008 (Diplectanidae) as Oliveriplectanum robustitubum (Wu & Li, 2003) n. comb. Platycephalotrema parile n. sp. (Dactylogyridae) from Iraq and Kuwait was described and differentiated from the similar species, Haliotrema indicum Tripathi, 1959, Platycephalotrema ogawai Kritsky & Nitta, 2019, and Platycephalotrema platycephali (Yin & Sproston, 1948) Kritsky & Nitta, 2019, based primarily on the comparative morphologies of the vaginal sclerites. Haliotrema indicum was transferred to Platycephalotrema as Platycephalotrema indicum (Tripathi, 1959) n. comb. and Haliotrema swatowense Yao, Wang, Xia, & Chen, 1998 was considered a junior subjective synonym of P. indicum. The finding of O. robustitubum in the Arabian Gulf represents a new geographic record for the species. Background: The present paper represents the third installment concerning the monogenoids collected during surveys to explore their diversity on the marine and freshwater fishes of Iraq. Previous installments on the monogenoids emanating from the surveys included the dactylogyrid and gyrodactylid species parasitizing mugilid fishes. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to further document the diversity of monogenoids infecting the fishes of Iraq. Methods: Marine fishes were necropsied for parasites, and standard procedures for collecting, mounting, drawing, and measuring of monogenoids were employed. Results: Oliveriplectanum robustitubum n. comb. (Diplectanidae) and Platycephalotrema parile n. sp. (Dactylogyridae) were collected. The occurrence of O. robustitubum in the Arabian Gulf represented a new locality record for the species. Objective: Tooth morphology education is a critical component of dental curricula, providing a foundational understanding of the intricate structural anatomy of teeth. This study evaluates the learning outcomes in relation to tooth morphology of two student cohorts from different academic terms, comparing the traditional 'tooth puzzle' method to an alternative fully digital approach. Materials and Methods: Two groups of Master of Dentistry students were retrospectively analyzed. The control group (55 students) was taught via the 'tooth puzzle' method in 2021, while the experimental group (55 students) underwent a fully digital course in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Both groups completed a digital examination involving the identification of 40 teeth, presented as images and videos. Results: In the control group of 55 students, nearly half (49.1%) achieved faultless results, while 65.5% had at most two faults, and 74.5% had no more than four faults. The group had a total of 163 faults, averaging 3.0 per student, with only one student (1.8%) failing the test. In stark contrast, the experimental group had no students without faults, 9.1% had four or fewer faults, and a significant 61.8% made 10 or more faults, with 29.1% failing their first test attempt by exceeding 12 faults. Overall, the experimental group registered 582 faults, averaging 10.6 per student. Conclusions: The 'tooth puzzle' method, with its interactive and tactile elements, proved more effective in teaching tooth morphology than the digital-only approach. The increased number of faults and failed tests in the experimental group suggest that while digital tools offer meaningful support in learning tooth morphology, their main advantage is seen when coupled with traditional hands-on techniques, not unassisted and independently. Vision is a ubiquitous sensory modality adapted to vastly different environments, which place variable selection pressures on both macro- and microscopic dimensions of external eye morphology. The hermit crab clade (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) spans environments from sea to land, yet, no systematic comparisons in eye morphology have been made between any species. We compared three species of hermit crabs inhabiting different ecological and social environments: two terrestrial species, one of which (Coenobita compressus H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is highly social and inhabits a flat, open diurnal habitat, and another (C. clypeatus Herbst, 1791) is its sister species that inhabits a rugged forested nocturnal habitat; and a third (Pagurus longicarpus Say, 1817) inhabits a marine intertidal habitat and is less social. We compared macroscopic eye morphology between species as well as microscopic differences in ommatidium-facet density and diameter within eyes. We found that eye dimensions (length, width, and thickness), but not overall volume, differed significantly between marine and terrestrial species. Furthermore, the highly social C. compressus had a significantly larger eye volume compared to its sister species, C. clypeatus , which is not as social. Larger eyes in C. compressus might be linked to its social lifestyle, where vision has been shown to be critical to finding conspecifics. All three species had a higher density of facets in the ventral compared to dorsal region of the eye. Our comparisons of external eye morphology revealed microscopic similarities but notable macroscopic variation between species, thus laying a foundation for future phylogenetically controlled tests within this species-rich clade, including comparisons of internal eye morphology. A new genus and new species of sesarmid crab is described from Bogor in West Java Province, Indonesia. Chriselatium schubarti new genus, new species, is morphologically most similar to Selatium , and Lithoselatium , but differs markedly in a suite of carapace, cheliped, ambulatory leg, and male pleonal characters. While Selatium and Lithoselatium are found in mangroves and coastal habitats, Chriselatium new genus was collected in a freshwater habitat that is over 60 km from the nearest coastline. Given the importance of information on intrauterine development in diagnosing anomalies in the gestational development of the species for the development of assisted reproduction technologies as well as understanding the autonomy and responsiveness of the newborn, the aim of the present study was to describe the external morphology of collared peccary conceptuses. For this study, two conceptuses were used per gestational age of 25–120 days post‐copulation (dpc) and neonates with 145 dpc, totalling 22 animals. Females were euthanised, and embryos/foetuses were examined, measured, and photographed. During the first third of the gestational period (25–50 dpc, n = 8), a marked body curvature, brain vesicles, somites, internal organs, placid lens, auricular protrusion and limb buds are noted. In the second third of the gestational period (51–100 dpc, n = 10), foetuses lose their body curvature, displaying greater anatomical definition, including skeletal, external ears, nostrils, eyelids and tactile hair formation and cranial suture closure. In addition, dorsal scent gland and genital tubercle differentiation were visualized at 50 days post‐copulation. In the third of the gestational period (101–145 dpc, n = 4), the organs become completely formed, alongside skin darkening, eyelid opening, dental eruption, dorsal odorous gland development, sexual organ externalization, and fanero attachment development. These data allowed for the construction of a prenatal growth curve, providing comparative anatomy information for ungulates and further contributing towards rational reproductive management and reproductive biotechnologies for this species. A new species of lycaenid butterfly, Paralucia crosbyisp. nov. (Theclinae: Luciini), is described, diagnosed and illustrated from Namadgi National Park, ACT, and adjacent areas in New South Wales in the highlands of south‐eastern Australia. It is most similar to Paralucia spinifera E.D. Edwards & Common, 1978, but comparative morphology of the adult and immature stages indicates fundamental differences between the two species. Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of all Paralucia species recovered P. crosbyisp. nov. and P. spinifera as reciprocally monophyletic, with a mean uncorrected 'p' pairwise divergence of 0.93%. Paralucia crosbyisp. nov. appears to be a narrow‐range endemic, restricted to dry montane eucalypt open woodland or woodland between 920 and 1130 m asl, in which the mean annual rainfall varies from 700 to 800 mm and where an abundance of the larval food plant Bursaria spinosa Cav. subsp. lasiophylla (E.M.Benn.) L. Cayzer, Crisp & I. Telford (Pittosporaceae) and colonies of the attendant ant Anonychomyrma sp. (itinerans species group) (Dolichoderinae) are established. The immature stages are described, illustrated and compared with those of P. spinifera and P. aurifera (Blanchard, [1848]). Despite being limited to high altitudes, adults fly in late winter–early spring (late July to early October). The species is univoltine, with much of the year (~9 months) passed in the pupal stage. The Jacobson's vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a small, hollow, paired, and symmetrical organ associated with the sense of smell, which phylogenetically functions as a specialized receptor for detecting food odors present in the oral cavity and transmitting them via a separate branch of the olfactory nerve to the rhinencephalon. Phylogenetic data collection, discussions on the presence and functionality of the VNO, motivated us to perform a comparative analysis in specimens within our reach, focusing primarily on the human species. In this study, cranial skeletons from some regional species were utilized, including squamata-lacertilia (Salvator merianae), rodentia (Rattus norvegicus and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), carnivora (Felis catus), platyrrhini primates (Alouatta caraya), and hominidae (Homo sapiens). These bone samples were analyzed from various perspectives to reveal openings and structures linking themto the VNO. Human specimens included: axial and sagittal histological sections of 15-micron thickness in fetal heads at 10 and 11 weeks of gestation, stained with Mallory's stain; as well as formalin-fixed cadaveric heads (4 adult specimens and 10 fetal specimens, from the 6th to the 8th month of development). Classic descriptions cite the VNO as a chemosensory organ, located ventrally at the base of the nasal septum, related to the palate through its communication with the nasopalatine duct (CNP) in most mammals. The incisive foramina and CNP connect the oral and nasal cavities, representing the peripheral part of the accessory olfactory system (critical in rodents and carnivores), which upon the entry of substances secreted by exocrine glands, urine, or feces, trigger VNO activation. Peripheral structures of the vomeronasal or accessory olfactory system (incisive foramina, CNP, or vomeronasal sacs) were in the studied species along with their relationships. Through human fetal histology, weobserved the entrance orifice, tubes, and sacs of the VNO. The CNP was visualized through microscopy and fetal bone samples. The adult palate presents a CNP that, in cadaveric exploration, shows the access (incisive foramen) occupied by firm mucosa, with vessels and nasopalatine nerve traversing the duct. While our review is limited, the anatomical indications are consistent in human cadavers, and the measurements taken conform to the bibliographic references. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using diffusible iodine‐based contrast‐enhanced computed tomography (diceCT), we examined the morphology of the oral glands of 12 species of the family Homalopsidae. Snakes of this family exhibit substantial interspecific morphological variation in their oral glands. Particular variables are the venom glands, ranging from large (e.g., Subsessor bocourti) to small (e.g., Erpeton tentaculatum). The supra‐ and infralabial glands are more uniform in morphology, being the second most developed in almost all the sampled species. Premaxillary glands distinct from the supralabial glands were observed in five species (Myron richardsonii, Bitia hydroides, Cantoria violacea, Fordonia leucobalia, and Gerarda prevostiana), in addition to Cerberus rynchops, the only species in which this condition was previously documented associated with the excretion of salt. In the three species of the saltwater group of homalopsids (C. violacea, F. leucobalia, and G. prevostiana), the premaxillary glands also extend posteriorly, occupying a large area above the supralabial gland, a condition not observed in any other species of snake studied thus far. Character evolution analyses indicate that premaxillary glands differentiated from the supralabial gland and evolved independently three or four times in the family, always in lineages that invaded marine habitats. Our results suggest that the differentiated premaxillary glands are likely salt glands, as is the case in C. rynchops. If corroborated, this increases to six or seven the number of independent evolutionary origins of salt glands in snakes that have undergone an evolutionary transition to marine life. The anatomy of the archosaurian pelvis and hindlimb has adopted a diversity of successful configurations allowing a wide range of postures during the evolution of the group (e.g., erect, sprawling). For this reason, thorough studies of the structure and function of the pelvic and hindlimb musculature of crocodylians are required and provide the possibility to expand their implications for the evolution of archosaurian locomotion, as well as to identify potential new characters based on muscles and their bony correlates. In this study, we give a detailed description of the pelvic and hindlimb musculature of the South American alligator Caiman yacare, providing comprehensive novel information regarding lower limb and autopodial muscles. Particularly for the pedal muscles, we propose a new classification for the dorsal and ventral muscles of the autopodium based on the organisation of these muscles in successive layers. We have studied the myology in a global background in which we have compared the Caiman yacare musculature with other crocodylians. In this sense, differences in the arrangement of m. flexor tibialis internus 1, m. flexor tibialis externus, m. iliofibularis, mm. puboischiofemorales internii 1 and 2, between Ca. yacare and other crocodylians were found. We also discuss the muscle attachments that have different bony correlates among the crocodylian species and their morphological variation. Most of the correlates did not exhibit great variation among the species compared. The majority of the recognised correlates were identified in the pelvic girdle; additionally, some bony correlates associated with the pedal muscles are highlighted here for the first time. This research provides a wide framework for future studies on comparative anatomy and functional morphology, which could contribute to improving the character definition used in phylogenetic analyses and to understand the patterns of musculoskeletal hindlimb evolution. Comparative anatomy is an important tool for investigating evolutionary relationships among species, but the lack of scalable imaging tools and stains for rapidly mapping the microscale anatomies of related species poses a major impediment to using comparative anatomy approaches for identifying evolutionary adaptations. We describe a method using synchrotron source micro‐x‐ray computed tomography (syn‐μXCT) combined with machine learning algorithms for high‐throughput imaging of Lepidoptera (i.e., butterfly and moth) eyes. Our pipeline allows for imaging at rates of ~15 min/mm3 at 600 nm3 resolution. Image contrast is generated using standard electron microscopy labeling approaches (e.g., osmium tetroxide) that unbiasedly labels all cellular membranes in a species‐independent manner thus removing any barrier to imaging any species of interest. To demonstrate the power of the method, we analyzed the 3D morphologies of butterfly crystalline cones, a part of the visual system associated with acuity and sensitivity and found significant variation within six butterfly individuals. Despite this variation, a classic measure of optimization, the ratio of interommatidial angle to resolving power of ommatidia, largely agrees with early work on eye geometry across species. We show that this method can successfully be used to determine compound eye organization and crystalline cone morphology. Our novel pipeline provides for fast, scalable visualization and analysis of eye anatomies that can be applied to any arthropod species, enabling new questions about evolutionary adaptations of compound eyes and beyond. Simple Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the morphology of root canals in the carnassial teeth of German shepherds and mixed-breed dogs. Knowledge of the morphology of root canals is essential for a successful endodontic procedure. It has been determined that an apical delta, which represents a complex structure that consists of multiple cavities whose purpose is to allow the passing of nerves and blood vessels from the pulp cavity to the apex of the root, was present in 247 roots. There are four main types of apical delta. The most common type in superior fourth premolars was type II, with up to 10 apical ramifications, whereas type IIIA, with 10–20 apical ramifications, was most commonly present in inferior first molars. Root canal treatment of carnassial teeth in dogs is a common endodontic technique which aims to re-establish or maintain the health of the periapical tissues. In total, 43 dogs were used in this study. Root canal morphology was evaluated in 86 superior fourth premolars and 86 inferior first molars. Apical delta was present in 247 roots, while obliteration of the root canal was found in 11 roots. The most common type of apical delta of the roots of superior fourth premolars was type II, with up to 10 apical ramifications, while type IIIA, with 10–20 apical ramifications, was most commonly present in the roots of inferior first molars. Considering that knowledge of the morphology of root canals is essential for a successful endodontic procedure, the aim of this study was to analyze and compare the morphology of root canals in the carnassial teeth of German shepherds and mixed-breed dogs. Apical resection for the purpose of endodontic therapy of the superior fourth premolar and the inferior first molar is indicated at a length of 4 to 6 mm from the anatomical tip of the roots, which would completely remove the apical delta of these two teeth. The tibial organ of Chloropidae and Milichiidae flies is an obscure feature with taxonomic significance. This study provides the first in-depth investigation into the ultrastructure of the hind leg of 11 genera from all Chloropidae subfamilies using a multimodal microscopy approach. The modified dermal tissue associated with the tibial organ indicates glandular function, as evidenced by the presence of secretory vesicles containing non-proteinaceous elements, potentially indicating lipidic secretion. The overall similarity of the tibial organ between Chloropidae and Milichiidae indicates a shared homology. However, the evolutionary history of this structure is still contentious due to limitations in the phylogenetic relationships of both lineages. Moreover, our findings enable future comparative investigations of other Diptera leg organs that possess secretory ability, which could be homologous across schizophoran families, but not necessarily the organs themselves. Odontocetes primarily rely on fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans as their main source of nutrition. In the digestive system, their polygastric complex exhibits similarities to that of their closest terrestrial relatives such as cows, sheep, and giraffes, while the entero‐colic tract shares similarities with terrestrial carnivores. The morphology, caliber, and structure of the odontocete intestine are relatively constant, and, since there is no caecum, a distinction between the small and large intestine and their respective subdivisions is difficult. To address this issue, we used the intestinal vascularization pattern, specifically the course and branching of the celiac artery (CA) and the cranial and caudal mesenteric arteries (CrMA and CdMA). A series of pictures and dissections of 10 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were analyzed. Additionally, we performed a cast by injecting colored polyurethane foam in both arteries and veins to measure the caliber of the arteries and clarify their monopodial or dichotomous branching. Our results showed the presence of multiple duodenal arteries (DAs) detaching from the CA. The CrMA gave origin to multiple jejunal arteries, an ileocolic artery (ICA), and, in six cases, a CdMA. In four specimens, the CdMA directly originated from the abdominal aorta. The ICA gave rise to the mesenteric ileal branches (MIB) and mesenteric anti‐ileal branches and the right colic arteries (RCA) and the middle colic arteries. From the CdMA originated the left colic and cranial rectal arteries (LCA and CrRA). The measurements revealed a mixed monopodial and dichotomous branching scheme. The analysis of the arteries and their branching gave us an instrument, based on comparative anatomy, to distinguish between the different intestinal compartments. We used the midpoint of anastomoses between MIB and RCA to indicate the border between the small and the large intestine, and the midpoint of anastomoses between LCA and CrRA, to tell the colon from the rectum. This pattern suggested an elongation of the duodenum and a shortening of the colic tract that is still present in this species. These findings might be related to the crucial need to possess a long duodenal tract to digest prey ingested whole without chewing. A short aboral part is also functional to avoid gas‐producing colic fermentation. The rare origin of the CdMA on the CrMA might instead be a consequence of the cranial thrust of the abdominopelvic organs related to the loss of the pelvic girdle that occurred during the evolution of cetaceans. At the University of Bristol, we established a novel dissection course to complement our anatomy degree. Students enrolled in this undergraduate course are trained as comparative anatomists, with equal time given to both human and veterinary anatomy. Historically, students opted to dissect either human or veterinary donors as part of the course. To fully reflect the comparative nature of the degree, the dissection course was redesigned so students could dissect both human and veterinary specimens as part of the same course. This facilitated a wide‐ranging experience of anatomy, encouraging detailed knowledge of a multitude of species and allowing for multifaceted anatomy graduates to be ready for employment in a wide and competitive job market. Across three iterations of the amended version of the course, median marks ranged from 58.7% to 62.0%, with between 22 and 39 students enrolled. In comparison to the course prior to the introduction of the change, median marks ranged from 59.8% to 62.8%, with between 16 and 24 students enrolled. There was no significant difference between marks before or after the introduction of the concurrently comparative aspect. This paper describes the course, with learning materials and assessments considered, along with some reflection on its value. The course offers benefits to students by widening their perspective on anatomical knowledge and making them more equipped for the job market. It also broadens their understanding of form‐function relationships. However, student feedback implied that having the choice between human or veterinary dissection was preferable, and this may outweigh the perceived benefits of the course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1936, Raymond Dart led the Wits University Expedition to the Kalahari where he used the tools of physical anthropology, including bodily measurements, face masks and comparative anatomy, to promote the ill-fated concept of race typology to understand human evolution. Dart's successor at the Wits School of Anatomical Sciences, Phillip Tobias, and his colleagues continued these anthropological practices in numerous expeditions to the Kalahari and elsewhere in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including an excavation of the grave of Cornelius Kok II in Campbell, Northern Cape in 1961. This paper reviews these practices and their contribution to scientific racism in South Africa. The paper also explores the impact that Steve Biko's life and death had on medical ethics at Wits University in the 1970s, leading to Wits Medical School's submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the decision to hold an Internal Reconciliation Commission (IRC). While the IRC was important, the absence of any review of pre-apartheid and apartheid-era anthropological practices at the Wits School of Anatomical Sciences meant that it was incomplete. This paper concludes by suggesting that there is a need to acknowledge and revisit this painful history of scientific racism to build a greater understanding of history, transparency and ethics for the future.
