The aim of this study was to determine factors associated with participation of community-dwelling older Australians (≥65 years) in the Exercise Right for Active Ageing program, consisting of 12 low- to moderate-intensity group exercise classes, delivered weekly, in person or online, by accredited exercise scientists and physiologists across Australia. Out of 6,949 participants recruited, 6,626 (95%) attended one or more classes and were included in the primary analysis, and 49% of participants attended all 12 classes. Factors associated with higher class attendance included participation in yoga/flexibility/mobility classes, attendance at a free trial class (adjusted incidence rate ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.05 [1.03, 1.08]), and attending online classes (1.19 [1.11, 1.26]). Factors associated with lower class attendance included state of residence, living in inner regional areas (0.95 [0.93, 0.98]), and having two or more comorbidities (0.97 [0.95, 0.99]). High class attendance suggests that the Exercise Right for Active Ageing program was well received by older Australians, particularly in states less impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns. Evidence is sparse on how community-based health-promoting programs can be culturally adapted for racially minoritized, immigrant older adult populations. Choose to Move (CTM) is an evidence-based health-promoting program that enhances physical activity and mobility and diminished social isolation and loneliness in older adults in British Columbia, Canada. However, racially minoritized older adults were not reached in initial offerings. We purposively sampled CTM delivery staff (n = 8) from three not-for-profit organizations, in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, that serve Chinese older adults. We used semistructured interviews, ethnographic observations, and meeting minutes to understand delivery staff's perspectives on factors that influence CTM adaptations for Chinese older adults. Deductive framework analysis guided by an adaptation framework, Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications-Enhanced, found three dominant cultural- and immigration-related factors influenced CTM adaptations for Chinese older adults: (a) prioritizations, (b) familiarity, and (c) literacy. Bariatric dentistry is the branch of dental medicine focused on preventive and comprehensive oral health care of overweight or obese patients. Obesity is an increasing US and international health problem and is a condition characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the adipose tissue and is categorized by body mass index (BMI) according to the World Health Organization (WHO). With the increase of morbid obesity worldwide and the unfavorable effect on the overall health and life expectancy, it is necessary that proper accommodations are made for accessible dental care of this vulnerable population of patients. The following case report details the emergency and the subsequent elective dental treatment of a patient with a morbid obesity and demonstrates the importance of necessary equipment, a multidisciplinary approach, and broad networking communication needed to treat bariatric patients. The aim of the present case report was to bring awareness and start professional discussions on the importance of dental practitioners in the community and dental academic programs working together to assure access for primary oral health for bariatric patients. External connectivity refers to the service opportunities provided by community open spaces that are influenced by the factors such as traffic distance, road conditions, residence patterns, and population distribution. It is an important factor in determining access to community open spaces. This has important implications for promoting walking behavior and community physical activity among aging urban populations. Using the accessibility evaluation method, we proposed an external connectivity of the community open spaces model from the community perspective and conducted an empirical study using the Overseas Chinese Town community in Shenzhen as an example. External connectivity of the community open spaces can be used to evaluate the efficiency of community open spaces, serving as a reference for open space optimization. The use of alcohol and other drugs is a major public health problem in adolescence. The implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies is still scarce in the global south. This study aimed to evaluate facilitators and barriers to the implementation of the Icelandic prevention model of adolescent substance use (IPM) in Chile. We conducted a qualitative study of stakeholders during the implementation process of the IPM in six municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. We convened six focus groups with parents and professionals from schools and municipal prevention teams (38 participants). Recordings were transcribed and submitted to a six-step thematic analysis. The following facilitators emerged: Participants valued the contribution of the IPM to articulate existing programs and teams, its community focus, and the local data obtained through the survey. There were also several barriers: Those included resistance to adopting a foreign model, the tension between generating local strategies and looking for measures to ensure the fidelity of the implementation, socioeconomic differences between and within municipalities, low-risk perception and supervision of parents in Chile, and a culture that generally does not discourage adolescent substance use. Implementation of the IPM was largely accepted by the stakeholders who agreed with the community approach of the model. The primary aim is to assess the implementation of an eight-session, group therapy pilot for Black and Latina transgender women in Chicago in terms of implementation outcomes regarding intervention effectiveness, acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. The Exploration Preparation Implementation Sustainment (EPIS) framework guided implementation processes, including community engagement as an implementation strategy, and an implementation taxonomy was used to evaluate outcomes of acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility, in addition to intervention effectiveness regarding anxiety and community connectedness. Two rounds of the pilot were completed in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, at a community-based organization serving LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning) youth on Chicago's West Side. Participants (N = 14) completed a baseline and postintervention assessment and evaluations after each of eight intervention modules. Descriptive statistics show improvement across measures of anxiety and community connectedness, and high mean scores across domains of acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility. Pilot findings indicate intervention effectiveness, acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility to address mental health and social support of Black and Latina transgender women. Additional resources are needed for transgender community-engaged mental health programs and research to establish core and adaptable intervention elements, scaled-up evidence for clinical effectiveness, and, most importantly, to improve mental health outcomes and the sustainability of such interventions. Attempts to meaningfully engage people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) as allies in conducting research have often failed because researchers tend to decide on the research topic without including community members. Academic researchers can avoid this pitfall by collaborating with community members to conduct a needs assessment to identify relevant research topics and build trust. Here, we report on the results of a psychosocial needs assessment for adult mental health service users in Massachusetts conducted by an academic-peer research team. The project was initiated as part of an academic mental health center's efforts to conduct community-based participatory research (CBPR) with a group of people with SMI. People with SMI were hired and trained to co-lead research projects and the development of the listening group guide, and they conducted 18 listening groups with 159 adults with mental health conditions. The data were transcribed, and rapid analysis employing qualitative and matrix classification methods was used to identify service need themes. Six themes emerged from qualitative analysis: reduce community and provider stigma, improve access to services, focus on the whole person, include peers in recovery care, have respectful and understanding clinicians, and recruit diverse staff. The policy and practice implications of these findings include creating a stronger culture of innovation within provider organizations, developing specific plans for improving recruitment and retention of peer workers and a multicultural workforce, enhancing training and supervision in cultural humility, communicating respectfully with clients, and including peers in quality improvement activities. The connection between community healthcare providers and available community‐based programs is often weak. For community members to be connected with services, a strong referral link between providers and programs is paramount. The Referral Express and Central Hub (REACH) project was born out of this need for Nurse–Family Partnership (NFP) program sites in the Denver Metro area of Colorado to be better connected and coordinated with local referral sources. The objective of the REACH pilot was to create a centralized referral system and determine its feasibility in practice. After a 12‐month pilot, this innovative referral system supported the increase in a number of referral partners to Denver Metro area sites, an increase in clients served across the Denver Metro area, as well as an increase in the "refer to enroll" rate which increased by 37%. The success of the pilot of REACH led the developers to test the process on a second program, Child First, which was also successful. REACH has proved to be sustainable and continues to operate for both programs. Additionally, REACH acts as a consultant to NFP sites outside the Denver Metro area, in the state of Colorado, as each site works to increase its relationships with referral partners. Background: The effects of climate change have been evident throughout all domains of health such as physical, social, environmental, and mental. However, the lack of perception made it a grey topic among the public. The aim of the study was to determine the perception of climate change on physical, environmental, and mental domains of health and to find the association between the physical, environmental, and mental effects of climate change and its basic characteristics. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a cross-sectional design among the general population above 30 years in the field practice area [urban and rural] of tertiary care hospital Perambalur for a period of three months. The data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire and the interviewer method, which includes sociodemographic characteristics along with questions on the perception of climate change effects on mental, physical, and environmental aspects. The regression models were used to analyze the odds of perception among the subjects with respect to the various domains of characteristics. Results: The study included 877 participants, where the majority of subjects perceived the effects of climate change on physical, mental, and environmental domains of health. The odds of having a higher perception were significant in regression analysis among people with higher/school education, agriculture occupation, and rural residence (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Most of the study participants had an increased perception of climate change effects, making the subjects better candidates to impart adaptive strategies. While a growing body of interprofessional education (IPE) literature demonstrates a positive impact on learner knowledge, there is limited data on its long-term impact on collaborative practice (CP). With the growth of the aging population globally, understanding both the long-term impact on CP and sustainability of community-based geriatric experiential IPE programs are imperative. This study explores the impact of the Interprofessional Geriatric Curriculum (IPGC), a community-based geriatric IPE program, on post-graduate clinical practice among seven health professions. This study utilized a cross-sectional descriptive design, where both qualitative and quantitative data were collected in the same online survey of health professionals' to measure their perceptions of the impact IPGC has had on their respective clinical practice 1–3 years post-graduation. Forty-six per cent of health profession graduates provided clinical care for people 65 years of age or older; 81% worked in interprofessional teams; 80% reported the IPGC experience significantly impacted their practice (N = 137), and all used validated assessment tools taught in the IPGC program in their practice. Eight themes emerged from the list of what health professionals learned from IPGC that they use regularly in their clinical practice: four themes were interprofessional in nature (i.e. teamwork and team-based care, interprofessional communication, roles/responsibilities, and personal/professional) and four themes related to geriatrics (i.e. aging, screening and assessment, medications, and didactic content). This study is one of the first to describe the sustained influence of a community-based IPE program across multiple health professional disciplines on clinical geriatric practice. The purpose of this study was to understand the developmental experiences that unfold in youth development contexts, and why they matter for character development. Drawing on pre- and post-program data provided by 846 adolescents (47% female, 63% youth of color), this paper empirically investigated the role of three developmental experiences―developmental relationships, critical reflection, and intrinsic program engagement―in promoting civic, moral, intellectual, and performance character strengths in a conservation context in the United States. Results provide robust evidence of the pervasive power of all three developmental experiences, and especially youth-adult developmental relationships and critical reflection, in promoting key elements of character. Specific suggestions are described for organizational action to invest strategically and systematically in these program features to support young people's character development. Food FARMacy is a clinical-community emergency food assistance program developed in response to food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Few qualitative studies have examined participant, and clinical and community stakeholder experiences with these food assistance programs. To examine the motivations, experiences, and perceptions of Food FARMacy participants and program stakeholders. A qualitative study using in-depth interviews between March 2021 and July 2021. Twenty-four Food FARMacy participants and 10 program stakeholders in New York, NY (Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens) older than age 18 years were interviewed. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Participant and program stakeholder interviews were analyzed separately. Themes that were salient in both groups were combined for reporting. Both program participants and stakeholders perceived: pandemic-related demands combined with reduced resources motivated participation; convenience, safety, and ease of access facilitated program retention; participants valued fresh produce and diversity of foods; the program improved diet and health; minimizing food waste was a priority; and social cohesion was an unexpected program benefit. Two additional themes among only program stakeholders also were identified: aligned values, flexibility, and communication were key to successful partnerships; and trust between community partners and community members drove programmatic success. Results suggest that a multisite clinical-community partnership to provide emergency food assistance in New York City can be leveraged to reduce barriers to healthy food access and address food insecurity during crises. In November 2021, two grassroots organizations in Boston, Massachusetts—a housing and health justice organization and a student-led nonprofit—established an initiative to provide persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) near the Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard ("Mass&Cass") intersection in Boston with access to free COVID-19 education and other wrap-around services. They partnered with hospitals, public health organizations, and advocacy groups to make this happen. This community-driven initiative serves as a model for how to enact a sustainable pipeline for PEH to receive health resources and information, with the voices of those directly impacted at the center. This cross-sectional study describes knowledge, perceived competence, and behaviors relative to intimate partner violence (IPV)-related brain injury (BI) among staff in residential domestic violence shelter programs across a New England state. A 23-item questionnaire was administered to registrants of an online IPV-related BI training series. Within this sample, knowledge about IPV-related BI was high, but relative to providing screening, accommodations, and specialized referrals to survivors with BI, perceived competence was low, and behaviors were infrequent. IPV shelter agencies should facilitate IPV-related BI training programs for staff and prioritize developing and implementing BI screening, accommodation, and referral policies and procedures. Background: Compassionate communities have been put forward as a promising model for community-based support for people facing serious illness, caregiving, dying, and loss. In particular, educational institutions are increasingly acknowledged as potential settings to function as compassionate schools and compassionate workplaces, cultivating acceptance and validation of these experiences beyond the university setting. Objectives: This paper investigates the activities and outcomes of a compassionate community initiative—the Compassionate University program at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. Design: Ripple Effects Mapping was used to guide the focus group and individual interviews conducted with core team members responsible for the development and implementation of the Compassionate University program. Methods: During the focus group and individual interviews, the core team members reflected on the program contributions, with their narratives visually depicted via a hand-drawn mind map. Qualitative data derived from this mind map were entered into XMIND mapping software and fine-tuned based on the focus group and individual interview transcripts and additional project records. Results: Thematic analysis identified four outcome areas that encapsulate the key contributions of the Compassionate University program: (i) increased acceptance and integration of topics such as serious illness, death, and bereavement into existing practices; (ii) broader support for and formalization of compassionate procedures and policies; (iii) emergence of informal networks and internal collaboration on the topics; and (iv) diffusion of compassionate ideas beyond the university. Conclusion: The Compassionate University program facilitates a cultural shift within the university environment, fostering greater acceptance of integrating topics such as serious illness, death, and bereavement into existing practices. Additionally, compassionate procedures and policies for students and staff have been formalized, and core team members are increasingly called upon to provide support on these matters. Notably, Compassionate University stands out as one of the pioneering initiatives in Europe, attracting different educational institutions seeking guidance on cultivating a more compassionate environment. Themotoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is a syndrome characterized by subjective memory complaints and slowwalking speeds that can identify older adults at increased risk for developing Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia (ADRD). To date, the feasibility of community-based physical activity (PA) programs for improving outcomes in MCR have yet to be examined. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a translational randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing 24-weeks of PA to a healthy aging education (HE) control intervention delivered within the infrastructure of an urban senior center in Greater Boston (clincaltrials.gov identifier: NCT03750682). An existing senior center employee was trained to administer the multimodal groupbased PA program that included moderate-intensity aerobic walking, strength, flexibility and balance training. A total of 79 older adults attended the senior center for a screening visit, of whom 29met the MCR criteria and 25 were randomized to PA orHE(meanage: 74.4±7years; BMI: 32.4±7kg/m2;85%female; 3MSE score: 92.4± 7; gait speed: 0.52 ± 0.1 m/s; SPPB score 4.8 ± 1.9). Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the study was stopped prematurely. Participants could successfully adhere to the study interventions (overall attendance rate: PA: 69% vs. HE:70% at study termination). Participants also successfully completed baseline and follow-up study assessments that included a computerized cognitive testing battery and objective tests of physical performance and functional exercise capacity. No study-related adverse events occurred. Notable trends for improved cognitive performance, gait speed and 6- minwalk distancewere exhibited in PA compared to HE.Our study provides important preliminary information to aid the design of larger-scale RCTs of PA that may help to preserve the independence of vulnerable older adults at high risk for ADRD in community-based settings. Background Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) causes substantial mortality in African countries with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), despite advances in disease management and increasing antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage. Reliable diagnosis of CM is cheap and more accessible than other indicators of advanced HIV disease burden such as CD4 testing or investigation for disseminated tuberculosis; therefore, monitoring CM incidence has the potential to serve as a valuable metric of HIV programmatic success. Methods Botswana national meningitis surveillance data from 2015 to 2022 were obtained from electronic health records. All electronic laboratory records from cerebrospinal fluid samples analyzed within government healthcare facilities in Botswana were extracted from a central online repository. Adjustments for missing data were made through triangulation with prospective cohort study datasets. CM case frequency was enumerated using a case definition and incidence calculated using national census data. Results A total of 1744 episodes of CM were identified; incidence declined from 15.0 (95% confidence interval [CI], 13.4–16.7) cases/100 000 person-years in 2015 to 7.4 (95% CI, 6.4–8.6) cases/100 000 person-years in 2022. However, the rate of decline slowed following the introduction of universal treatment in 2016. The highest incidence was observed in men and individuals aged 40–44 years. The proportion of cases diagnosed through cryptococcal antigen testing increased from 35.5% to 86.3%. Conclusions CM incidence has decreased in Botswana following expansion of ART coverage but persists at a stubbornly high incidence. Most cases are now diagnosed through the cheap and easy-to-use cryptococcal antigen test, highlighting the potential of using CM as key metric of program success in the Treat All era. Background: Addressing wellbeing at the community level, using a public health approach may build wellbeing and protective factors for all. A collaborative, community-owned approach can bring together experience, networks, local knowledge, and other resources to form a locally-driven, place-based initiative that can address complex issues effectively. Research on community empowerment, coalition functioning, health interventions and the use of local data provide evidence about what can be achieved in communities. There is less understanding about how communities can collaborate to bring about change, especially for mental health and wellbeing. Method: A comprehensive literature search was undertaken to identify community wellbeing initiatives that address mental health. After screening 8,972 titles, 745 abstracts and 188 full-texts, 12 exemplar initiatives were identified (39 related papers). Results: Eight key principles allowed these initiatives to become established and operate successfully. These principles related to implementation and outcome lessons that allowed these initiatives to contribute to the goal of increasing community mental health and wellbeing. A framework for community wellbeing initiatives addressing principles, development, implementation and sustainability was derived from this analysis, with processes mapped therein. Conclusion: This framework provides evidence for communities seeking to address community wellbeing and avoid the pitfalls experienced by many well-meaning but short-lived initiatives. Australia is a multicultural nation with nearly 30% of the population born overseas. Migrants' mental health can be impacted by discrimination, racism and experiences relating to asylum and immigration. These can be compounded by low help-seeking caused by stigmatized beliefs and poor mental health literacy. My Mind, My Voice (MMMV) is a co-designed program aiming to promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing for people with a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background. This research project explored the perceived impacts and value of MMMV and processes leading to those impacts. A mixture of internal quantitative and qualitative evaluation surveys (n = 32) and researcher-conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 9) were conducted with CALD organization and community members who attended training workshops, presented MMMV events or attended an event. Data were analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. Five themes were developed: culturally relevant and respectful , cross-cultural connections , the importance of language , increasing confidence and literacy and the potential to change attitudes. Being involved with a co-produced program that was culturally relevant and respectful was a positive experience that enhanced people's confidence and literacy. Feeling respected, valued and validated helped participants feel empowered to develop and deliver mental health and wellbeing education in their community. Open, honest conversations are an important way to break down stigma and start conversations about mental health and wellbeing in CALD communities. Evaluation outcomes demonstrate the success of MMMV's collaborative approach, which can inform the development and evaluation of CALD mental health promotion interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To describe and analyze how Extension nutrition educators in one state system transitioned from primarily face-to-face to virtual nutrition education programming. This exploratory case study gathered data through nutrition educator interviews, virtual program delivery guides, and nutrition educators' program impact statements. Southeastern State Extension system in late 2022. The sample included 15 participant interviews, multiple virtual program delivery guides, and 43 program impact summaries. The use of Cultural Historical Activity Theory as a framework to explore educators' learning process with virtual program delivery and how this learning influenced community nutrition program delivery choices. Qualitative data was analyzed with ATLAS.ti using a priori coding. Two key findings emerged from the data: educators were more likely to deliver programs in a virtual setting when the programs aligned with their values and skills, and educators preferred flexible program curricula and delivery guides because it allowed them to address their community's specific needs. Educators plan to continue to deliver certain community nutrition programs virtually. Future research is needed to explore additional perspectives on virtual delivery, such as program participants and state program managers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Youth involved in child welfare may benefit from programming that enhances their relationship skills given their susceptibility to engaging in high-risk interpersonal behaviors that can lead to challenges such as, engaging in or experiencing violence, housing and job insecurity, and poor physical and mental health. This research explored the feasibility of implementing an evidence-based healthy relationships program, the Healthy Relationships Plus Program - Enhanced (HRP-E), with youth involved in child welfare. Over 9 months, four HRP-E groups were facilitated at a Children's Aid Society in Ontario, Canada, involving 28 youth. Interviews were conducted with facilitators (n = 5) and youth (n = 13) to examine their views of the program. Facilitators also completed surveys that evaluated the facilitation of each session and overall program implementation. A thematic analysis of the data was conducted and results indicated that the HRP-E was perceived as a valuable program that is relevant and useful for youth involved in child welfare. Participants highlighted trauma-informed practices and organizational resources that are required when facilitating the HRP-E within a child welfare context. The present findings address the theory-to-practice gap by illustrating the practical application of trauma-informed program facilitation. To explore the benefits of a brief autism education intervention on peer engagement and inclusion of autistic children at day camps. A convergent, parallel, two-arm (intervention/no intervention), non-randomized, mixed-methods design was used. The individualized, peer-directed, 5–10 min intervention included four components: (1) diagnostic label, (2) description and purpose of unique behaviors, (3) favorite activities and interests, and (4) strategies to engage. A timed-interval behavior-coding system was used to evaluate engagement between each autistic camper and their peers based on videos taken at camp (days 1, 2, 5). Interviews with campers and camp staff explored why changes in targeted outcomes may have occurred. Percent intervals in which the autistic campers were jointly engaged with peers improved in the intervention group (n = 10) and did not change in the control group (n = 5). A large between group intervention effect occurred by day 5 (Z = − 1.942, η2 = 0.29). Interviews (5 autistic campers, 34 peers, 18 staff) done on the last day of camp in the intervention group garnered three themes: (1) Changed behavioral attribution, (2) Knowledge facilitates understanding and engagement, and (3) (Mis)perceptions of increased inclusion. A brief educational intervention that includes individualized explanatory information and strengths-based strategies might improve peers' understanding of and social engagement with autistic children in community programs such as camps. Older adults' engagement in age-friendly community (AFC) initiatives is considered an essential element of community transformation. However, research on older adults' experiences of engaging in AFC initiatives remains nascent. Based on qualitative interviews with 23 older adult participants from 15 AFC initiatives across four states in the United States (U.S.), our reflexive thematic analysisidentified three themes regarding what participants value from their engagement: (a) social contribution; (b) social connectedness and integration; and (c) staying active and personal growth. Background: Healthcare and community collaborations have the potential to address health‐related social needs. We examined the implementation of an educational initiative and collaborative intervention between a geriatric clinic and Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to enhance age‐friendly care for a Hispanic patient population. Methods: As part of a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)‐funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, a geriatric clinic partnered with AAA to embed an English‐ and Spanish‐speaking Social Service Coordinator (SSC). The SSC met with patients during new and annual visits or by referral to address What Matters and Mentation in the patient's primary language, provide education, and make social service referrals. Patients aged 60 and older, who received SSC services during a 12‐month period, were defined as the intervention group (n = 112). Using a retrospective chart review, we compared them to a non‐intervention group (n = 228) that received primary care. We examined available demographic and clinical data within the age‐friendly areas of What Matters and Mentation. Measures included cognitive health screenings, advance care planning, patient education, and community referrals. Results: Most of the intervention groups were eligible for AAA services and had the opportunity for service referrals to address identified needs. A higher proportion of patients within the intervention group completed screenings for cognitive health and advance care planning discussions. Conclusion: Interagency partnerships between ambulatory care settings and community‐based organizations have the potential to expand access to linguistically and culturally competent age‐friendly primary care for older adults. Shortened telomere length (TL) has been associated with lower cognitive performance, different neurological diseases in adults, and certain neurodevelopmental disorders in children. However, the evidence about the association between TL and neuropsychological developmental outcomes in children from the general population is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between TL and neuropsychological function in children 4–5 years of age. We included 686 children from the INMA Project, a population-based birth cohort in Spain. Leucocyte TL was determined by quantitative PCR method, and neuropsychological outcomes were measured using the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MCSA). Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate associations adjusted for potential confounding variables. Main findings showed that a longer TL was associated with a higher mean working memory score (β = 4.55; 95% CI = 0.39, 8.71). In addition, longer TL was associated with a higher mean global quantitative score (β = 3.85; 95% CI = −0.19, 7.89), although the association was marginally significant. To our knowledge, this is the first study that shows a positive association between TL and better neuropsychological outcomes in children. Although further research is required to confirm these results, this study supports the hypothesis that TL is essential in protecting and maintaining a child's health, including cognitive functions such as working memory. Aim: To identify insights for supporting people at risk of suicide in the community based on primary healthcare workers' experiences. Design: Qualitative descriptive design. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with fifteen primary healthcare workers employed by Japanese municipalities between August and October 2019. The data were subjected to qualitative descriptive analysis. Results: The analysis revealed eleven subthemes, clustered under the following three themes: (1) fostering 'opportunities for discovery' for people at risk of suicide by encompassing strategies such as increasing access to services and promoting a holistic understanding of the life cycle; (2) fostering 'meaningful connections' by searching for channels to reach the heart and taking approaches from different objectives; and (3) engaging in 'risk management', by understanding and coping with real‐life struggles and implementing timely crisis intervention. Conclusion: Not only direct care targeting suicide prevention but also holistic care that includes atypical perspectives such as 'approaches from different objectives' may provide important insights for supporting people with suicide risk. Implications for Practice: Beyond the limitations of existing suicide risk screening methods, this study highlights the importance of a holistic approach that sees people at risk of suicide in the context of their daily lives and aims to alleviate the difficulties in their lives that have brought them to the point of considering suicide. Impact: By describing support focused on the difficulties that people at risk of suicide face in their daily lives, this study identified insights for supporting people at risk of suicide in communities where screening and intervention are difficult. These findings will contribute to the relief of people at risk of suicide by stimulating suicide prevention measures in primary healthcare settings. Purpose: Research has examined peer mentorship to understand how it may help people with spinal cord injury (SCI) adapt and thrive. We still lack an in-depth understanding of the perspectives of SCI peer mentors and mentees on their dyadic relationship. This study was to explore the dyadic interactions and relationships between SCI peer mentors and mentees in a peer mentorship program delivered at a rehabilitation center. Research Method: Between 2016 and 2017, we recruited two dyads of peer mentor and mentee with SCI (N = 4). Each participant completed three one-on-one interviews (N = 12). Data were analyzed using a creative nonfiction approach. Results: Three unique dialogical stories were developed. Story 1 (A slow and steady start) described how mentors took a mentee-centered approach in building the relationship. Story 2 (Mentorship and friendship: negotiating the "grey zone") highlighted how mentees and mentors experienced challenges in navigating the boundaries between mentorship and friendship. Story 3 (The "endless" job for mentor) showcased how the relationship could enter a phase in which it could affect mentors' well-being. Conclusions: The stories highlighted important attributes to the relationships between SCI mentors and mentees. Considerations were suggested for community-based SCI organizations to integrate peer mentorship into rehabilitation settings, including optimizing mentorship introductions and matching, defining mentors' role explicitly, and building support systems for mentors. Impact and Implications: The creative nonfiction stories in this study provided insights into some of the nuances of SCI peer mentorship relationships that are only broadly mentioned in past studies, including mentorship introduction, friendship–mentorship boundaries, and burdens on mentors. To develop and/or optimize SCI peer mentorship programs within rehabilitation, community-based organizations and rehabilitation institutions can consider an informal approach to facilitate mentor–mentee connections, while clearly defining roles and responsibilities for mentors. Because mentors may maintain contacts with mentees beyond rehabilitation settings, organizers of peer mentorship programs need to build support systems to ensure mentors can manage the extra demand. Background: Individuals experiencing socioeconomic inequity have worse health outcomes and face barriers to palliative and end-of-life care. There is a need to develop palliative care programs tailored to this underserved population. Objectives: To understand the characteristics and symptom profiles of a group of urban patients experiencing socioeconomic inequity and receiving palliative care. Design: Descriptive exploratory analysis of a patient dataset. The patient dataset was generated through a pilot research study with patients experiencing socioeconomic inequity and life-limiting illness who received a community-based palliative care intervention. Methods: The intervention took place over 1 year in the Palliative Care Outreach and Advocacy Team, a community-based urban palliative care clinic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, serving persons experiencing socioeconomic inequity. Participants had to be at least 18 years of age, be able to communicate in English, require palliative care for a life-limiting illness, and be able to consent to inclusion in the study. Results: Twenty-five participants were enrolled. Participants predominantly identified as male and Indigenous, experienced poverty and housing instability, and had metastatic cancer. Our participants rated their pain, shortness of breath, and anxiety as more severe than the broader community-based palliative care population in the same city. Most patients died in inpatient hospices (73%). Conclusion: Our analysis provides an in-depth picture of an understudied, underserved population requiring palliative care. Given the higher symptom severity experienced by participants, our analysis highlights the importance of person-centered palliative care. We suggest that socioeconomic inequity should be considered in patients with life-limiting illnesses. Health service psychology has called for programmatic efforts in advancing antiracist training through the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This article illustrates how an interdisciplinary team of faculty (psychologists, pediatricians, education specialists) and trainees (psychology trainees and pediatric residents) used a community-based participatory action research approach to develop a racial and intersectional microaggression and antiracism skill-building program for faculty and trainees. The intervention called Respect4All is a 9-hr skill-building program (three 3-hr sessions) that focuses on addressing racial and intersectional microaggressions and developing and utilizing antiracism strategies. Respect4All was developed through extensive literature review and partnering with key stakeholders both internal and external to our institution so that the resulting program was empirically supported and responsive to the needs of a diverse group of faculty and trainees within psychology and related training programs. Considerations for how a program such as Respect4All could be used within psychology and related training programs in the future to help address gaps in antiracism programming are addressed. Public Significance Statement: Given the impact that racial and intersectional microaggressions have on the well-being of faculty and trainees, it is crucial to develop antiracist skill-building programs. The use of a community-based participatory research approach to develop empirically supported and culturally sensitive intervention strategies also provides a model for how psychologists can work with key stakeholders to address their concerns. The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA) authorizes youth-focused workforce development programs such as YouthBuild, Job Corps, and Youth Activities programs, to increase economic self-sufficiency among youth and young adults (YYA). These programs vary in their funding and service delivery structure but all serve YYA with significant barriers to education and employment. The devolution of policy implementation requires research that examines the nuanced ways in which services are implemented and experienced at the community level. Our research studied the implementation contexts of five local youth workforce programs in a metropolitan area of one southern state. Participants included a total of 12 youth-serving staff, and 7 YYA. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Across providers and YYA categories related to local policy implementation included: (1) recruitment, (2) facilitators of success, (3) barriers to success, with an intersection between YYA's complex backgrounds and experiences, developmental needs, and structural inequities, and (4) opportunities to enhance supports. Overall, our findings indicate that these youth workforce programs might be promoting healthy development, whether or not the design or implementation of such an approach is explicitly mentioned. Further, implementation struggles around funding, staff, and ability to recruit hard-to-reach YYA and to provide intensive support for YYA were noted. Recommendations for policy and practice that support YYA well-being are presented, as well as implications for future research related to local youth workforce program recruitment and service delivery practices. Highlights: Local youth workforce programs provide important connections, services, and skill building activities for youth enduring marginalization. Programs used similar recruitment techniques and noted comparable facilitators and barriers to success. YYA face challenges of lacking transportation and inability to meet basic needs alongside lacking confidence, hope, and social support. Despite facing structural and personal challenges, many YYA participants are driven by a desire to succeed. Background and Objectives Few proven dementia-care programs are integrated into community-based agencies. We report on the acceptability and effectiveness of an evidence-based program, Care of People in their Environment (COPE), delivered by community-based agency staff. Research Design and Methods Pretest/post-test design with 3 data points (baseline, 3-month program completion, 6-month follow-up). COPE was delivered by 6 occupational therapists and 4 social workers at 2 agency sites with people living with dementia and caregivers. Staff assessed the interests and abilities of people living with dementia, home safety, caregiver challenges, and readiness to learn strategies. Staff provided dementia education, stress reduction, and nonpharmacological techniques tailored to caregiver-identified challenges. Acceptability (3- and 6-months), included completed sessions, upset with and confidence managing care challenges, strategies used, and program satisfaction. Effectiveness (3- and 6-months) included people living with dementia's health events (falls, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and 911 calls), rehospitalization risk and functional dependence; and caregiver well-being and readiness. Benefits by in-person (n  = 188) versus virtual/hybrid (n  = 46) delivery due to Coronavirus Disease-2019 were evaluated. Results Of 843 dyads screened, 271 (32.1%) enrolled, 246 (90.8%) completed COPE, and 234 (95.1%) completed ≥1 follow-up. Regarding acceptability, caregivers completed about 8 sessions, reported improved confidence and upset (p  < .001), most implemented strategies 3-months (72.8%) and 6-months (83.5%), and expressed high program satisfaction. For effectiveness, compared to baseline, odds of people living with dementia's health events were lower including rehospitalization risk, although functional dependence increased; caregiver well-being (3-, 6-months, p  < .001) and readiness (3-months, p  < .01) improved. Outcomes did not differ by delivery mode. Discussion and Implications Acceptability and effectiveness were strong. COPE resulted in tangible improvements for families regardless of delivery mode. Dance and movement therapy (DMT) and Western dance forms have been advocated for the effective management of Parkinson's Disease (PD). This study focuses on including culturally relevant Indian dance concepts in developing and evaluating a community-based DMT programme for PD. This is the first comparative study on DMT for PD conducted in India, with a control group of a 'physical exercise programme'. 34 People with Parkinson's Disease (PwPs) were assigned to a 'DMT intervention' or a 'Physical exercise group' using convenience sampling and they attended weekly 90-minute sessions over 12 weeks. Mood, physical and cognitive functioning, and quality of life were measured pre-and post-interventions. Results and subjective feedback from PwPs suggest that DMT intervention was more effective in improving positive mood and reducing depression in PD as compared to the control group. Aim: To describe the latest scientific evidence regarding community-based interventions performed on patients in need of palliative care worldwide. Introduction and background: Given the rise of chronic diseases, their complexities and the fragility of patients, we are facing around 56.8 million people in need of palliative care. Community-based healthcare, particularly palliative care, can address social inequalities and improve the biopsychosocial health of disadvantaged populations. Therefore, primary care, as the main health referent in the community, has a central role in the care of these patients. Methods: This is an integrative review from January 2017 to June 2022 that follows the PRISMA statement and has been registered in PROSPERO. PubMed, Cuiden, the Web of Science (WoS), Cochrane and LILACS were the five databases searched. The scientific quality assessment of the articles was carried out following the CASPe methodology. Study selection was carried out by two researchers, A.V.L. and J.M.C.T., using the inclusion and exclusion criteria mentioned below. In cases of doubt or discrepancy, a third author (J.R.S.) was consulted. Results: The interventions mentioned in the 16 articles analysed were classified under the following categories: music therapy, laughter therapy, spiritual and cognitive interventions, aromatherapy, interdisciplinary and community-based teams, advance care planning and community, volunteering, telemedicine and care mapping. Example: Educating people to talk about different ethical issues could improve their quality of life and help develop more compassionate cities. Conclusions: We have identified interventions that are easily accessible (laughter therapy, telemedicine or music therapy), simple enough to be carried out at the community level and do not incur high costs. The COVID-19 pandemic placed demands on community-based organizations (CBOs) to address human needs to promote the health and well-being of diverse communities experiencing high rates of disparities. To enhance the capacity of CBOs in engaging with their communities, we developed webinars on health literacy and cultural humility. Home Together (HT) is a multi-level multi-component health promotion program, co-led by academic and non-profit partners in Arkansas that sought (1) to improve access to and family acceptance of social services and health care among women experiencing homelessness who have a diagnosed mental health condition and a child younger than six years 1 and (2) to increase service provider capacity to engage with this population. A socioecological perspective was used to detail program components and lessons learned. Home Together enrolled 345 women representing unduplicated families. Of these, 214 completed six-month reassessments and 111 completed discharge assessments. Representative of the area and population served, most self-identified as belonging to racial minorities (87.0%), being younger than 35 years (80.1%), experiencing violence (76%), and being heterosexual (82%). Pre-post testing indicated positive changes for HT families, including improvements in mental health, health care access, and housing. Addressing housing insecurity contributes to health care programs as stable housing has positive health benefits. Home environmental hazards may reduce these potential health benefits and could increase morbidity for conditions such as asthma. This study examined housing and indoor air quality among urban low-income households in Colorado to inform housing-insecurity interventions. We conducted a community-engaged study among residents of motels, mobile homes, apartments, and single-family homes that included a survey on the home environment, health, and sociodemographic factors, spirometry, and indoor air quality measurement. We enrolled 60 households: 50% single-family homes, 37% apartments, and 13% residential motels. Perceived stress and depression were higher among motel residents compared with other housing types. We did not find differences in lung function by housing type. Indoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and black carbon concentrations were higher in motels than in other housing types. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays from the perspective of early intervention service providers in Taiwan. Adopting a single-case experimental design (ABM design), this study examined the immediate and sustained effects of interventions on individualized goals during baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. Additionally, data from interviews with parents, special education teachers, and other participants were collected to understand the challenges and improvement strategies of community rehabilitation programs. Results revealed that community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays exhibited both immediate and sustained effectiveness. Challenges faced by parents and professionals differed, with parents having less contact and communication with administrative systems, while professionals experienced more pronounced implementation difficulties during interventions. Moreover, strategies for improving community rehabilitation programs for children with developmental delays should vary for parents and professionals to address inconsistencies in attitudes and strategies among parents and administrative obstacles encountered by professionals. Background: Community champions have been employed across various settings to disseminate evidence-based public health information. The Building Babies' Brains programme trains champions to work with parents in communities, equipping them with child development knowledge and parental engagement strategies. We explored what makes community champions effective in distributing information to parents, including how the champion–parent relationship and champions' personal characteristics affect information dissemination. Methods: Champions included both peers and professionals working with parents in target communities. We administered an online survey (n = 53) and follow-up interviews (n = 14) with champions, with representation from across all training cohorts. We conducted a realist-informed reflexive thematic analysis to generate themes in the data and highlight the contexts, mechanisms, and outcome patterns identified. Results: We observed 15 Context–Mechanism–Outcome configurations across five themes: information sharing opportunities, information relevance, the nature of the champion–parent relationship, interaction expectations, and champion confidence. Our programme theory for how the community champion approach works identified that peer champions focused more on building rapport, modelling behaviours, and being a trusted community resource than direct information transfer. Professional champions, in contrast, showed greater expertise and confidence in discussing parenting practices directly. For both groups, traits such as friendliness and the ability to establish a trusting relationship enhanced effectiveness. Conclusions: This research identifies the impacts of champion role, characteristics, and the champion–parent relationship on the effectiveness of knowledge mobilisation in this context, with implications for training and recruitment of champions. Those using a champion model in comparable settings should ensure that champions have the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage parents and share information effectively. Background: Elevated blood pressure, or hypertension, is one of the main health problems among adolescents globally. However, there are limited data on hypertension among adolescents in Sudan. This survey aimed to investigate the prevalence of elevated blood pressure/hypertension and associated factors among adolescents in Gadarif City, Sudan. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted during a three-month period (August to October 2023) in Gadarif City, Eastern Sudan. A face-to-face interview questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic information. Adolescents' anthropometric (weight and height) measurements were taken, and blood pressure was measured. Multivariate binary and linear regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. Results: A total of 384 adolescents (178 [46.4%] boys and 206 [53.6%] girls) were included in the study. The median (interquartile range, IQR) of the age was 14.0 (12.1–16.1) years, and that of the body mass index (BMI) was 16.9 (15.2–20.0) kg/m2. Thirty-four (8.9%) adolescents had hypertension/elevated blood pressure (≥95th percentile). After adjusting for confounders, multivariable binary regression analysis showed that age (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03–1.42) and BMI (AOR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04–1.20) were associated with hypertension. Conclusion: Approximately one in ten adolescents in Eastern Sudan was hypertensive. Adolescents with higher age and BMI were at higher risk for hypertension. To assess if a high-level mobility programme (HLMP) can promote sustained participation in physical activity by adolescents with cerebral palsy. Eight adolescents with cerebral palsy, Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I-II, 11–16 years, participated in 24 community-based group HLMP sessions across 12 weeks. Participants set attendance, involvement, and physical performance goals, completed activity diaries over 58 weeks and undertook physical capacity tests. Measures of activity frequency and diversity (attendance) and involvement level were collected weekly across baseline (4–6 weeks), intervention (12 weeks), and nine months follow-up (including Covid lockdown). Median attendance was 23 of 24 HLMP sessions. Attendance goal/s attainment was highest during COVID lockdown. Involvement goals were consistently attained throughout all phases. Physical performance goal/s attainment was highest during intervention phase but reduced during nine months follow-up. Frequency of participation in physical activities varied greatly across study phases (range 0–33 episodes/week) with stable variety of activities and generally high 'involvement.' During the intervention, seven participants improved physical capacity and six maintained, or increased, the gains six months later. Most participants improved physical capacity post-intervention but only some had sustained attendance and involvement in physical activity, highlighting the complexity of physical activity participation. Health professionals' promotion of sustained participation in physical activity needs to consider individual preferences for frequency, diversity and duration. Supporting and measuring involvement in physical activity should be prioritised as a key outcome of an intervention. Physical activity interventions should be followed up for longer than six months to determine sustained changes in participation outcomes Measuring physical capacity and performance gains alone is insufficient to determine sustained, meaningful participation. Background Methods Results Conclusions Many health systems are trying to support the ability of older adults to remain in their homes for as long as possible. Little is known about the relationship between patient‐reported social risks and length of time spent at home. We assessed how social risks were associated with days at home for a cohort of older Veterans at high risk for hospitalization and mortality.A prospective cross‐sectional study using a 2018 survey of 3479 high‐risk Veterans aged ≥65 linked to Veterans Health Administration data. Social risks included measures of social resources (i.e., no partner present, low social support), material resources (i.e., not employed, financial strain, medication insecurity, food insecurity, and transportation barriers), and personal resources (i.e., low medical literacy and less than high school education). We estimated how social risks were associated with days at home, defined as the number of days spent outside inpatient, long‐term care, observation, or emergency department settings over a 12‐month period, using a negative binomial regression model.Not having a partner, not being employed, experiencing transportation barriers, and low medical literacy were respectively associated with 2.57, 3.18, 3.39, and 6.14 fewer days at home (i.e., 27% more facility days, 95% confidence interval [CI] 8%–50%; 42% more facility days, 95% CI 7%–89%; 34% more facility days, 95% CI 7%–68%; and 63% more facility days, 95% CI 27%–109%). Experiencing food insecurity was associated with 2.62 more days at home (i.e., 24% fewer facility days, 95% CI 3%–59%).Findings suggest that screening older Veterans at high risk of community exit for social risks (i.e., social support, material resources, and medical literacy) may help identify patients likely to benefit from home‐ and community‐based health and social services that facilitate remaining in home settings. Background: The purpose of this study was to quantify how much of the burden of visual impairment (VI) and unmet need in Talagang, identified by Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey data, has been addressed by Community Eye Health (CEH) programme efforts. Methods: A RAAB survey was carried out in November 2018, with 2,824 participants in Talagang Tehsil, Punjab, Pakistan, aged 50 and over. Census data were used to extrapolate survey data to the population. Alongside this, a CEH programme was launched, consisting of community eye screening, and onward referral to rural health centres, secondary or tertiary ophthalmological services, as required. This health intervention aimed to address the eye care needs surfaced by the initial survey. From 2018 to 2022, 30,383 people aged 50 or over were screened; 14,054 needed referral to further steps of the treatment pathway and more detailed data collection. Programme data were compared to estimates of population unmet needs. Main outcome measures were prevalence of VI, and proportion of need met by CEH Programme, by cause and level of VI. Results: Among those aged 50 and over, 51.0% had VI in at least one eye. The leading causes were cataract (46.2%) and uncorrected refractive error (URE) (25.0%). In its first four years, the programme reached an estimated 18.3% of the unmet need from cataract, and 21.1% of URE, equally in both men and women. Conclusions: Robustly collected survey and programme data can improve eye health planning, monitoring and evaluation, address inequities, and quantify the resources required for improving eye health. Introduction: People who use drugs in community settings are at risk of a fatal overdose, which can be mitigated by naloxone administered via bystanders. In this study we sought to investigate methods of estimating and tracking opioid overdose reversals by community members with take-home naloxone (THN) to coalesce possible ways of characterizing THN reach with a metric that is useful for guiding both distribution of naloxone and advocacy of its benefits. Methods: We conducted a scoping review of published literature on PubMed on August 15, 2022, using PRISMA-ScR protocol, for articles discussing methods to estimate THN reversals in the community. The following search terms were used: naloxone AND (“take home” OR kit OR “community distribution” OR “naloxone distribution”). We used backwards citation searching to potentially find additional studies. Overdose education and naloxone distribution program-based studies that analyzed only single programs were excluded. Results: The database search captured 614 studies, of which 14 studies were relevant. Backwards citation searching of 765 references did not reveal additional relevant studies. Of the 14 relevant studies, 11 were mathematical models. Ten used Markov models, and one used a system dynamics model. Of the remaining three articles, one was a meta-analysis, and two used spatial analysis. Studies ranged in year of publication from 2013-2022 with mathematical modeling increasing in use over time. Only spatial analysis was used with a focus on characterizing local naloxone use at the level of a specific city. Conclusion: Of existing methods to estimate bystander administration of THN, mathematical models are most common, particularly Markov models. System dynamics modeling, meta-analysis, and spatial analysis have also been used. All methods are heavily dependent upon overdose education and naloxone distribution program data published in the literature or available as ongoing surveillance data. Overall, there is a paucity of literature describing methods of estimation and even fewer with methods applied to a local focus that would allow for more targeted distribution of naloxone. The Manawatū Food Action Network (MFAN) is a collective of social service and environmental organizations and community stakeholders that work together to promote collaboration, education and awareness of issues surrounding food security, food resilience, and localization in the local community. In 2021, the 4412 neighborhood was identified as requiring urgent assistance, with approximately one third of residents experiencing food insecurity. The 4412 Kai Resilience Strategy was developed with the community to move from food insecurity to food resilience and sovereignty. Recognizing that food security is complex and based on multiple causes, six interwoven workstreams were identified to create a multifaceted, coordinated strategy. This includes education, food economy, community, food support, māra kai, and social enterprise. The strategy cultivates local ownership and commitment to change. It creates a broader constituency of support, balancing the urgent need to feed people today with the long-term need to change systems through step-change initiatives. There is a lack of nutritional programming and resources available for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nova Scotia, Canada. This is problematic for several reasons, including that adequate food and nutrition knowledge is integrated to effective medical therapy and wellness for PLWHA. The aim of this research was to explore and describe the beliefs, values, and experiences of HIV-service providers involved programming for PLWHA in Nova Scotia. Using a post-structuralist lens, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine service providers. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts identified four main themes: (1) recognizing the social determinants of health, (2) acknowledging and disrupting layered stigma, (3) understanding the commensality, and (4) navigating and utilizing networks of care. These findings suggest that those developing, delivering, and evaluating food and nutrition-related programming must engage in community-inclusive approaches that recognize the varied social determinants of health that shape the lived of PLWHA, leverage existing networks and resources, and actively disrupt layered stigma. Also, in agreement with existing evidence, participants stressed the value of communicating and supporting the practice of eating together (commensality) and cultivating networks of care.
