The article examines the history behind the commemoration of New Zealand in sculptor Edward Onslow Ford's memorial to former colonial administrator Sir George Grey. Topics discussed include abandonment of Grey by relatives and friends to hired attendants, doubts on Grey's patriotism and loyalty to Great Britain, the funeral of Grey as a symbolic affair for the Maori people, and the public campaign for a memorial to Grey as St. Paul's Cathedral.

This article focusses on the 'plague debates' which took place in the British parliament in 1819 and 1824, where the opinions of non-medical experts were also taken into account; particularly those of officials who had acquired relevant practical experience. Such opinions were crucial in politicising the medical debate from one of the nature of plagues, towards an evaluation of the impact of quarantine more broadly. Paying closer attention at the correspondence between the colonial governor of Malta and the Ionian Islands, and the colonial secretary, it reveals a different aspect of the contagion inquiry in Britain—one considering medical knowledge about plagues that was highly speculative. While most historical works illuminate the establishment of what was considered to be medical evidence, there is less work about the political, economic or even personal motives which underlined interventions in these debates. Priyanath Mukhopadhyay (also referred to as PM subsequently) enjoyed an extraordinary career in the colonial police force in Calcutta, where he served as a detective from 1878 to 1911. In his later life, he wrote as a bhadralok and a detective—both important parts of his fashioned self-identity—using narratives of crime to showcase his rare professional expertise and his responsibilities as a cultured upholder of the law. Through an examination of Priyanath's serialized police tales, it is possible to see how crime writing forged the values of respectability and civic sensibilities, and shaped the moral fiber of an urban society that appeared to be falling apart at its seams. Examining criminal activities in colonial Calcutta as recoverable from PM's writings affords glimpses of a city being reordered by its material wealth, social aspirations, and moral attitudes. PM's tales attempt to face this challenge by forging a moral authority in the finely calibrated colonial order. His readers too were evidently invested in it as they endorsed this stand with their purse, leading to soaring circulation figures. The middle classes of Calcutta emerge in these tales as part and parcel of Priyanath's policing, providing neighborhood and community surveillance networks and backing up the efforts of their detective hero. PM wrote very much as a social commentator as well as a police officer, reaffirming traditional social and domestic values, and frowning upon transgression of class and gender boundaries. What also comes alive is the city itself—the spaces laid bare or concealed by crime—the writing providing access to different topographies of urban knowledge and information networks. This study analyzes the methods Imperial Japan employed in changing the names of Korean territories and examines how these changes related to the policies of the colonial power. The Japanese photo album Hantō no kin'ei depicts a variety of landscapes in colonial Korea. It also contains tables of contents in both Japanese and English, whose primary purpose was to Romanize Korean place names (generally written in Chinese characters) based on their Japanese pronunciation. This study argues that in order to superimpose its identity onto Korea, Japan transliterated Korean place names based on Japanese pronunciation rather than the original Korean. This article focuses on the reception and effects of the post-emancipation forced labour system in Puerto Rico (1873–1876) and contributes to the global understanding of the transition from slavery to coerced labour in the nineteenth century. Through an analysis of local reports, metropolitan responses, and archival documentation, I examine the ways both Spanish and British colonial administrators obscured and shaped the historical record through their promotion of the narrative of absolute success of the contracting system and minimization of widespread reports of newly-emancipated libertos' (freedpeople's) challenges to it. In addition to interrogating the colonial reporting strategies utilized, motivations for narrative silencing, and the consequent effects on the historiography of Puerto Rican emancipation, the article provides glimpses of liberto resistance that constitute direct contradictions to the dominant narrative. The article explores the contrast between what has been historiographically proposed as a created world based on visits by Indians, and what could have been a found world information that these visits had about a heterogeneous social world. Topics include examines filtered through the lens of colonial officials and from an exceptional source due to its geographical coverage and the quality of its registers.

In 1731 a French army in colonial Louisiana enslaved hundreds of Natchez families and shipped them to Saint-Domingue where they mostly disappear from the written records. This article analyzes tantalizing clues about Natchez families and other Native American slaves on the island during the eighteenth century. By examining slave runaway advertisements, rather than the official records of colonial administrators, it becomes clear that there were hundreds, if not thousands of slaves with Native American ancestry in Saint-Domingue by 1791. Neither the violence of slavery nor the violence of the archive itself can erase the tenacious survival of Natchez people and other Native Americans on the island. In addition to theorizing about the experiences of Natchez slaves, this article suggests that historians can no longer discount the contributions and experiences of Native American people to the history of Saint-Domingue and to the creation of Haiti. From their historical perspective, the the disintegration of the Soviet Union and its extended East European empire was similar to the disintegration of the colonial empires of European nations.

This article focuses on the ways Rastafari in Jamaica practiced statehood and statecraft between the 1930s and early 1960s. At times, as is well known, Rastafari rejected the authority and institutions of the colonial state in Jamaica. But archival documents also reveal the ways they came to battle against colonialism and white supremacy on their own terms. Rastas built their own versions of state institutions to recreate an alternate world beyond "Babylon." They learned to manipulate and "work" the institutions of Babylon from law courts to the political machine in order to survive. They followed national and international news—often from Africa—and absorbed knowledge about the United Nations they could use to fight legal cases and write petitions protesting the conditions of their existence. All this suggests a novel stream of Rastafari intellectual thought and action that we must add to our understandings of the movement. Studying Rastafari in this manner—possible because of extensive research in its rich history—provides an opportunity to understand the actions of marginalized groups acting beyond the traditional nation state in the moment of decolonization. This article examines the practice of autopsies in French-ruled West Africa in the interwar era. It contributes to the discussion of medical knowledge and its employment in the colonies and raises a set of questions regarding the administration's motives for performing autopsies and the African responses to this practice. In order to answer these questions, I briefly examine the practice of autopsies in France and move to the colonies to look at the problematic ways in which they were performed under colonial conditions. I then delve into local practices of ritual autopsies that also aim to explain death, but in different ways. Finally, I demonstrate what the differences and similarities between practices of colonial and ritual autopsies can teach us about the idea of the Civilising Mission and its perception by African colonial subjects. This essay discusses Mexican colonial officials' efforts to suppress Afro-Mexican confraternities, or lay Catholic brotherhoods, between 1568 and 1612, a period of black confraternal activity in Mexico that has not received scholarly attention. Colonial officials – from the viceroy to royal magistrates to Church and city officials – suspected that Afro-Mexicans used brotherhoods to disguise unorthodox and criminal activities, including planning slave revolts. Sources analyzed here are the earliest records of Afro-Mexican confraternities, which allow us to study them in the sixteenth century. Thus, this essay reperiodizes the conversation about Afro-Mexican confraternities and colonial officials' suspicions of Afrodescendants' motives. The article contends, as scholars of black confraternities have sustained, that rather than the dangerous, immoral, and unorthodox places that colonial officials imagined, Afro-Mexican confraternities were instead spaces where creole black Mexicans sought to ameliorate their coloniality by forming community, pooling their resources together to care for each other in time of need, and expressing their Afro-Catholic identity through devotion and festive practices. This article examines nutrition studies on Korean diets between 1937 and 1945 as a case study on the liaison between nutritional science and total war regimes in the twentieth century. Building on critical scholarship on nutritional science, this article argues that nutritional science—as a scientific governmental technology and racial discourse—served the wartime colonial regime in the Japanese empire aimed at managing the Korean population in the most scientific manner. As a governmental technology, nutritional science produced scientific frameworks and data that shaped state food policies for the efficient mobilisation of Korean diet and labor for war. As a racial discourse, nutritional science construed Korean diets as a scientifically defined nutrition problem. By construing the nutrition problem as an expression of colonial backwardness in need of governmental intervention, nutritional science justified wartime state policies like the school lunch programme as welfare measures to improve the colonial diet and body. The article discusses the influence of white colonial masculinity on U.S. colonial power in the Philippines from 1900-1938, based on the biography of colonial administrator James Fugate. The purpose of this study is to understand the political, social, economic and military factors that shaped the evolution of Spanish shipbuilding for the Acapulco-Manila trade route under the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties (1571–1815). It focuses on the main variables that affected the size of the trans-Pacific galleons, on the objectives of the Spanish crown's shipbuilding legislation, and on the methods used by Spanish colonial administrators to mobilize human and material resources in the Philippines. It discusses the role of the religious orders in the functioning of this industry, particularly in opposing the negative social consequences of shipbuilding. It also details the administrative reforms that shaped the development of this industry during the eighteenth century, which sought to limit the exploitation of the local workforce by transferring executive powers from local government officials and encomenderos to the friars. Finally, it also discusses the measures implemented by the Bourbon regime to increase its control over the functioning of the shipyards, particularly during the late eighteenth century. Although this article focuses on the construction of the largest ships launched from the Philippine shipyards, its conclusions can be extended to other types of vessels built by the Spanish administration in the archipelago during this period. Also being discussed are the topics like intensification of cultural relations and acceleration of globalization processes in Latin America, and development of mass culture in 19th century.

This article traces the growth of newspapers for African readers in Southern Rhodesia. It focuses primarily on the role played by South African investors in launching newspapers for the Africans. It further looks at the transformation of these newspapers from mouthpieces of the colonial government to being mouthpieces of African Nationalists. Issues of funding as well as reactions by Africans will be addressed. The article also attempts to discuss the impact of these newspapers on both the readers and the politicians. The article presents the discussion on specific colonial and postcolonial connections between Switzerland and the African continent including work centres around the black female body.

Critical and post-colonial scholars have argued that a more complete account of sovereignty necessitates an exploration of the colonial experiences through which Western civilised identity was forged. But the way these 'distant' encounters were used in (and interacted with) the process of claiming sovereignty domestically has received less attention. This is surprising as critical scholars have revealed the existence of strong similarities between the domestic and international constructions of sovereignty (and in particular the necessary performance of a savage Other) and have emphasised how sovereignty transcends the domestic/international frontier and provides a crucial link between the two. As a response, this article develops an analysis of the construction of sovereignty that combines both the domestic and international colonial frontiers on which 'civilised' sovereignty relies. I use a large set of primary archives about France in the sixteenth century in order to explore how sovereignty depends on unstable colonial frontiers, that is, differentiations between the civilised and the savage, that are constantly contested and re-established. Combining the domestic and international colonial frontiers reveals how they interact and are used in order to reinforce the civilised identity of the Western ruler. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Malcolm MacDonald was a high-status British diplomat during the period from the 1940s to the 1960s who achieved success through his unconventional, personable approach to international negotiations. He was equally successful as an architect of decolonization in Asia and Africa. At the same time, MacDonald was a collector in a variety of genres. This collecting activity was not separate from his public career as a diplomat and colonial administrator but rather central to it. MacDonald's identity as a collector helped him build relationships with East- and South-East Asian leaders. His views on material culture and enthusiastic patronage of the arts also influenced MacDonald's efforts at cultural decolonization. This article evaluates the links between MacDonald's collecting and his official international duties, arguing that he should be understood as a 'public collector'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of Swazi historical affairs in the colonial period has remained patchy. The historian is confronted by numerous gaps that make it difficult to get a comprehensive view of the development of the history of the country during this period. One of the neglected subjects is the nature of the relations between indigenous rulers who were allowed to exercise some authority by the British policy of Indirect Rule, colonial administrators, and missionaries who promoted western education for Swazi children. This article interrogates such relations in the 1920s and 30s arguing that between 1928 and 1937 the education of Swazi children was intensely contested by groups whose main aim was power and control over the indigenous population. The article shows that indigenous leaders challenged western education as advanced by missionaries because it was viewed to be undermining the power and authority of the Swazi monarchy. Colonial administrators were part of the contest as they wanted an education system that would further the ends of British colonialism. For their part, the missionaries became part of the contest as they believed that western education was a good instrument for evangelization.
