By the 1710s relationships between the Yamasees and their South Carolina neighbors were rapidly deteriorating. Colonists enslaved and physically abused Yamasee people, stole their property, and encroached on their lands. In the midst of this, a Yamasee "Prince" made a singular trip to London, spending twenty-one months with Anglican schoolmasters and tutors who attempted to transform him into a missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Why did his community pursue this path? This article argues that the Prince's clan was attempting to engage in spiritual diplomacy with the British: sending a diplomat to a spiritually and politically important capital who then converted to Christianity. This practice was indigenous in origin but was practiced particularly by Indian communities that had sustained contact with Spanish missionaries in La Florida. Such was the case with the Prince's community: the Euhaws rejoined the Yamasees in 1703 after a century spent in La Florida and needed to establish a more secure footing for themselves in the Yamasee and British worlds. Though it would prove disappointing in a number of respects, analysis of the Prince's voyage reveals how southeastern Indians responded to European colonialism by drawing on long-standing Native practices. One of the few maps made by the indigenous population of the Americas and dating from the early eighteenth century to have survived, either in original or copied form, is the subject of this article. The map, on deerskin, was given to the new governor of South Carolina, Francis Nicholson, by an unknown Native American. Entitled A Map Describing the Situation of the Several Nations of Indians between South Carolina and the Massissipi River, it has generally been attributed to the Catawba nation. After situating the map in its historical period and detailing the claims for a Catawba origin, these claims are refuted and evidence supplied for a Cherokee origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of glass trade beads has contributed much to our chronological understanding of the colonial period in the Eastern Woodlands of North America. Indeed, this class of artifact has allowed archaeologists to identify and conduct research at important archaeological sites that never appeared in the European historical record. In the Southeast, the best chronological resolution established by current bead chronologies relates either to sixteenth- to mid-seventeenth-century Spanish-traded bead assemblages or eighteenth-century French-traded bead assemblages. There is a conspicuous gap, however, in glass bead chronologies associated with the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English-Indian trade in the Southeast. In this paper, I address this gap by characterizing a large sample of trade beads (n = 35,309) found in individual mortuary assemblages recovered from a number of Southeastern Indian sites. This is the first time a regional synthesis of this scale has been conducted, for the English colonial period in the Southeast. In order to begin to refine the bead chronology of this period, I also present the results of a quantitative seriation (using a technique known as correspondence analysis) of the same mortuary assemblages. While the results of this exploratory technique represent a preliminary stage in this process, they nevertheless identify a number of temporal trends that can be used to derive occupation date estimates for sites spanning the English colonial period in the Southeast (ca. 1607-1783). Based on an examination of a variety of published and manuscript resources, some of which have not previously been studied by professional historians, this essay identifies cultural factors constructing demand for formal education in the lower South during the middle decades of the eighteenth century. The lower South's racial demographics and rural setting were not merely a hindrance to educational development, as has long been posited by historians. Rather, the rural setting drove a regionally distinctive pattern of demand. Emerging in a frontier and colonial society, educational demand answered perceived imperatives to construct racial-cultural differences as much as likenesses and affinities. Prohibitions against reading by the enslaved, the South Carolina Regulators' educational demands, and early efforts to ''civilize'' Native Americans all appear in a newly causational relationship as examples of how an eighteenth-century colonial society strove to reconstruct its cultural landscape. This article explores slave mortgages from the 18th and 19th-century public records of Virginia, South Carolina, and Louisiana and considers both the economic and social impact that mortgages had on enslaved people in the Southern States during the period. Some of the subjects considered include the velocity of money, both Colonial and Antebellum policies towards collateral-based issuance of credit based on slaves, both American and British banks and banking practices, international business relations, and the impact of foreclosures on slave families.
