The paper deals with the study of the Golden Horde sites in the Penza region and their mapping – not just the territorial analysis of archaeological sites, using maps, but also their study. Despite the close attention to the sites of the XIII–XIV centuries, little is known about them and the experience of archaeological mapping in the Penza region. In the XIX and XX centuries, archaeological studies in the region were carried out by V.M. Teryokhin, A.A. Krotkov, N.I. Sprygina, A.A. Spitsin, A.Ye. Alikhova, M.R. Polesskikh, V.I. Lebedev, V.I. Pervushkin, Ya.B. Belyaev, V.N. Shitov, G.N. Belorybkin. The last one carries out excavations on the Narovchat settlement. At the beginning of the XXI century, archaeological studies were and are being carried out by V.A. Vinnichek, V.P. Lebedev, T.V. Osipova and others. The prospects for the development of monuments were considered by G.N. Belorybkin, Yu.A. Zeleneyev, V.V. Stavitsky, A.G. Sitdikov. The research results were published in articles, monographs, and exhibited in museums in Penza and regional centers. The plans include the museumification of archaeological sites in architectural structures in the city of Narovchat, village of Zolotaryovka and others.

This article is concerned with the interpretation of diverse examples of hoards (intentional deposits of valuable objects) from Central Asia’s Hellenistic and Kushan periods that are traditionally understood in utilitarian terms. As a means of comparison, it first reviews useful insights from the study of hoards in Bronze Age Europe and coin hoards, where simplistic classifications and interpretations of hoards (especially as representative of strictly ritual or utilitarian behaviour) have been increasingly problematised. The case of the Begram hoard is then discussed in reference to these insights. Arguably, this find represents not the remains of a palatial treasure or merchant’s cache, but perhaps rather material selected from the property of a religious institution that was deposited and abandoned as late as the early 4th century AD, and reflecting both ritual and utilitarian considerations. The interpretations of additional cases of diverse hoards from Ai Khanoum, Taxila, the Oxus Temple, Daľverzintepe, and Mir Zakah are then reconsidered, highlighting common shortcomings in the interpretation of coin hoards in the field, the diverse ways these finds shed light on economic, social, and ritual behaviour, and the necessity for critical interrogation of frequently presumed direct links between unrecovered hoards and expected invasions.

Studies on the institutions of the Macedonian Koinon have expanded considerably in recent years since excavations in the region of Macedonia revealed a significant amount of numismatic and epigraphic evidence. Even though literary sources concerning the foundation and the existence of the Koinon are obscure, numismatic testimonies contributed to the institution and its role within the Macedonian territory under the Roman rule. In the current article, the “Serres, 1966” hoard is examined, which was found in 1966 and is today kept at the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum. Emphasis is given to the iconographic types and the legends, which provide valuable information regarding the institutional and cultural character of the Macedonian Koinon.

The aim of the work is to identify explanations for the lengthy circulation of Safavid coins bearing the central inscription, "ʿAli is the friend of God (ʿAli vali Allāh)," from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. Studying the coins from the period and the hoards in which they were found, alongside historical narratives, ethnographic information, and religious texts, sheds light on their meaning and reception in their Shiʿi environment. The special attitude towards these coins accounts for the widespread imitation of these coins, which came to dominate Iranian markets during this period, as predicted by Gresham's law of "bad money." In this article the presence of coins from the mints of the Chalcidice within the boundaries of the Macedonian kingdom is examined. Along with coin hoards, we include archaeological material from various sites to understand and interpret the existence of coins of the cities of Chalcidice, the Chalcidic League, and the Bottiaeans within the Macedonian kingdom. After the final conclusions, a group of bronze coins from the excavations of Pella is published as an appendix. Coins from mints of the Chalcidice that have been found in the Macedonian kingdom are few. So far, most coins (37) can be attributed to the Chalcidic League, another 3 to the Bottiaeans, and 4 to the Chalcidic League or the Bottiaeans. Second comes Acanthus with 16 coins, and third Potidaia with 12. Further, 7 coins can be attributed to Aphytis, 5 to Mende, 4 to Scione and 1-2 issues to Aineia, Dikaia and possibly Sermyle. Finally, Ouranopolis is represented with 3 coins. Most of these coins came to light in excavations in burial and non-burial contexts, and some also were buried in coin hoards. The earliest of these issues are dated in the first half of the 5th century BC. The number of coins rises slightly in the second half of the 5th century coins, while most of the numismatic material belongs to the first half of the 4th century BC. Finally, rather few are the coins of the second half of the 4th century BC. Most of the coins and coin hoards of the first half of the 4th century BC can probably be linked to the invasion of the army of the Chalcidic League into Macedonia. People traveling from Chalcidice to Macedonia are another source.

This article focuses on the introduction, diffusion and function of coinage in Sybaris and Metapontium, cities considered the first to mint coinage in southern Italy. In this paper, there is an effort to combine a series of numismatic data (coin hoards, fractions, numismatic standard, isolated coins, overstrikes, and number of dies) along with non-numismatic ones (literary sources, other archaeological data, location, fertility of the land) in order to draw broader conclusions on the introduction of coinage and its impact on the societies of these two poleis. The main argument is that coinage was introduced in order for the elite, rich landowners governing the cities to profit from selling their agricultural products. Nevertheless, the demos benefited also from coinage, as the minting of fractions reveals. This group also had a certain (limited) political power in these two cities and their interests (inevitably) were taken into consideration by the ruling elites. The spread of the coinage of these two cities in southern Italy and other areas suggests that ultimately coinage served (mostly), already from the Archaic period, as an important tool for all kinds of (interstate) economic transactions of which trade constituted the greatest part. A series of corroded Safavid copper coins (folus) dating to the seventeenth century CE and minted in Isfahan were discovered in Hamedan, Western Iran. A selection of these coins was studied to identify the minting process, corrosion morphology and mechanisms, and their state of conservation. Eight coins from two hoards were analysed using metallography, ICP–OES, SEM–EDS and XRD to identify their metal/alloy compositions and microstructures, as well as the chemical compositions of any corrosion layers and products. The results showed that the coins were minted from blanks using thermo-mechanical processing to produce their relief-like surfaces. The corrosion morphology was found to include a two-layered corrosion crust in which the original surface was well-retained, and the corrosion mechanisms identified were internal dissolution and oxidation of copper and the formation of copper (II) compounds over the original surface. The presence of chloride compounds in the corrosion products showed that the coins have been suffering from 'bronze disease' so that any preventive conservation must include keeping the relative humidity of their storage and exhibition environments below 45%. This article presents a case study of three different coin series (RRC 468-RRC 470) minted near contemporaneously in Hispania during the latter stages of the civil war, which present strikingly different representations of foreign peoples and places. While Caesar’s coin series (RRC 468) displays an image of submissive Gallic captives and a military trophy, Cnaeus Pompey Jr’s two series (RRC 469=470) feature personifications of the region and local cities and depicts them working together with their Pompeian counterpart in the pursuit of victory in the area. The article incorporates hoard evidence to further develop our understanding of how a contemporary viewer might have experienced these contrasting images of foreign peoples and places. It demonstrates which would have been the more common image in circulation and provides evidence for potential audience targeting with the Pompeian coin series. In light of recent scrutiny of Pompeian patronage networks in Spain, this hoard evidence for potential audience targeting allows a new interpretation of the Pompeian coin series as targeting a potentially wavering host community to be put forward.

In the collection of Valea Hârtibaciului Museum of Agnita is kept a group of coins issued by Dyrrhachium and discovered at Apoș. This lot contains 10 coins which can be part of the Apoș hoard, from which two lots, preserved in the Brukenthal National Museum’s numismatic collection, were published. Taking in account all those groups, we can establish that, at least until now, we know 54 coins of this hoard. Like many others monetary deposits with Dyrrhachian coins found in Dacia, this one it is dominated by the coins of group V. It is very possible to have a hiding horizon in the southern Transylvania dated no long after the middle of the 1st century BC, probably created by the harsh political and military environment generated by the fall of Burebista’s power. Hoards of the Irish Later Bronze Age regularly include different forms of rings and chain links that historically have been identified vaguely as tack components or 'ornaments'; these occur, too, as stray finds. If, however, they are examined in their wider European context, it becomes clear that some represent components of a hitherto unrecognised class of Irish composite copper-alloy ornament, dating from the tenth--eighth/seventh centuries BC, and exemplified by the Derrane, Co. During construction work in the centre of Črnomelj in 2019, archaeologists discovered a gold coin from the period of Late Antiquity. This tremissis of the Roman emperor Anthemius was minted in Rome 467-472. It has two special features: a lower weight than the average for tremisses, and grafitti on the reverse of the coin. The great variety of the types and quantities of the minted solidi of Anthemius is partially reflected in the hoard finds discovered in Italy and northern Europe. In terms of the published coins, it can be established that there are few single finds of the coins of Anthemius, and among them tremisses are especially rare. Investigation of the distribution of single-coin finds outside and inside the Empire has shown that tremisses of Anthemius are very rare. The monetary circulation on the territory of present-day Slovenia in the second half of the 5th century almost ceased, and the small number of coins could well indicate a transition to a barter system. Gold coins otherwise predominate in the circulation; they must be connected, most probably, either to the military or to the work of the provincial administration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the inventory created to register the archaeological and numismatic artefacts of Astra Association's Museum, document kept in nowadays at Brukenthal National Museum, some hoards were described. One of them contains 16 coins issued by the Adriatic cities: Apollonia and Dyrrhachium, probably, in the first half of the Ist century BC. Despite the problems found in the descriptions list we succeeded to correct them and to determine the exact structure of the hoard. The article is dedicated to the analysis of archaeological monuments of the Golden Horde period discovered in the Kharkov region (Ukraine) in the basin of the Udy River (the Udy region). The authors present consolidated information published in scientific literature concerning the monetary hoards of the Golden Horde period discovered in the Kharkov region and the settlements dating back to the same period. The article also features mapping and localization analysis of the sites. The fact that the hoards and settlements of the Golden Horde period are concentrated in the Udy region, which is especially evident in view of the almost complete absence of synchronous sites in other microregions of the Kharkiv region, is accounted for by a significant transit trade route passing through the area at the time, which linked the town of Azaq (located at the crossroads of international Eurasian trade) with the Middle Dnieper region, further linking the area with the western and northern worlds, On the basis of an analysis of numismatic and archaeological data, the authors reconstruct the history of the studied territory in the second half of 13th – first quarter of 15th centuries, particularly the dynamics of the operation of the trade route and the associated infrastructure. Besides, the article outlines the promising directions and tasks for further studies.

In 1962, two coin hoards were discovered at the gardener’s of the then Agricultural Cooperative in Blansko. The cash divided into two parts included in total 3907 mostly Moravian coins from the mid-13th century. The coins were stored in ceramic vessels and built one whole. This paper provides a much-needed exploration of the economic interrelationship between York and Dublin during the reign of the Uí Ímair ('Sons of Ívarr') dynasty. A comprehensive catalogue of silver hoards/finds dated to between 800 and 1000 from the Irish counties of Meath, Kildare, Wicklow and Dublin and from the English county of Yorkshire is presented, demonstrating that the overall contents of hoards from around York and Dublin are dominated by numismatic material. The analysis of these hoards introduces a chronologically based phase system and interprets how the regulations of quality and the iconographical styles of the coins and bullion relate to the monarchical authority of Ívarr's dynasty. Hoarding activity correlates with periods of historical/political crisis, and material evidence from the hoards (Hiberno-Norse bullion in Yorkshire and Viking York coinage in Irish hoards) shows that Dublin exported bullion products to York and that York invested coinage in Dublin's growth. These interactions influenced Dublin's development of a mixed economy during the tenth century. The bullion and coinage also prove that regulations were imposed on silver products by a centralised authority, and that Ívarr's dynasty had the legal prerogatives and fiscal motives to execute these decisions. The paper concludes that Ívarr's dynasty provided the political stability that enabled the economic success of York and Dublin but that Dublin and York maintained independent economic policies. This paper discusses a recently discovered coin hoard in the German-Israeli Tell IẒṭabba Excavation Project whose copper-alloyed coins belong to the days of Alexander II Zabinas (129/8-124/3 BCE). The hoard is discussed in light of Tell Iẓṭabba's history and archaeology -- as a settlement founded in the Seleucid period and destroyed by John Hyrcanus in 108/7 BCE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author presents a previously unknown Phoenician-weight tetradrachm struck at Gaza in the first reign of Demetrius II and discusses its importance for understanding the political relationship between the Hasmonean Jewish state under Jonathan Apphus and the Seleucid kingdom. A hoard of medieval coins, mainly from Brandenburg and Pomerania, was discovered in 1933 in Gryfino (German: Greifenhagen). Some part of the deposit got dispersed, however, most of it was acquired for the collection of the then museum in Szczecin. During World War II the hoard was evacuated to the town of Mołtowo, Kołobrzeg district and disappeared. The hoard lot contain 39 “Thasian type” tetradrachms and 6 imitations. Because of the correspondence between dies we suppose that 4 of those imitations were being struck in the same minting place. In the case of imitations we have many writing errors, letters that were poorly copied after the “Thasian type” tetradrachms issued under the roman control. In majority of cases the monogram is of type 6, after Prokopov typology. Despite the fact that the discovery place is unknown, it is possible that this group of coins to be part of the Cașolț hoard found in 1777. We think that the hiding moment of this monetary deposit can be related with the one of Șieu-Odorhei hoard placed around 60 B.C. This low dating in concordance with the semnificative presence of imitations in the hoard. The paper is a preliminary publication of a large hoard of Bosporan staters found in Phanagoria's Eastern necropolis in 2011. It contains 3695 coins struck in the 3rd-4th centuries AD under Ininthimaios, Rhescuporis V, Pharsanzes, Sauromates IV, Teiranes and Thothorses, as well as barbarian imitations of latter staters. The Phanagorian hoard is evidence on the historical background of the epoch and sheds new light on the economy, currency and many technical aspects of the coin production in the Late Bosporos. The recent survey of coins from the hoard by X-ray spectroscopy and the neutron tomography first revealed staters of Sauromates IV, Teiranes and Thothorses with the silver content and surface-silvered coating. The treasure was deposited in AD 307/308, due to political instability in the region caused by the increased barbarian pressure on the borders of the Roman Empire and the ancient states in the Black Sea Region. Although various works had been dealt with Roman money circulation of the Great Hungarian Plain some phenomena remained undiscovered for the research. This paper deals with republican and early imperial mints came to light in the territory of Szolnok County. The Jászdózsa hoard with its 114 pieces of Roman republican and early Roman period denars from P. Sulla (151 B.C.) to Emperor Nero (AD 64–68) belongs here. The Roman coins had appeared in large numbers only since the first century AD in the Great Hungarian Plain. The republican coins are very rarely represented, though they are very common in Transylvania. From the Zagyva mouth area to the river Tisza, and from the territory of the Jászság some hoards and scattering finds are known. It is difficult to interpret the circulation of these coins due to the lack of written sources and archaeological finds. Because of the Aurei the role of Roman politics should also be taken into consideration. Which gentes had lived in the territory of the Jászság and what role they had played in the relationship system of the Carpathian Basin we have rarely any information about. In 1980 there were published 5 coins from a hoard discovered in 1945 at Goranu (now part of the Rm. Vâlcea municipality). Initially, the hoard contained around 300 pieces, with the exceptions of those 5 coins all other were unknown. Fortunately we discovered another 6 coins in a touristic guide dedicated to the Rm. Vâlcea city and in the numismatic collection of Vâlcea County Museum. After collecting this new informations, we enlarge the number of published coins to 11 and established a new ending year: 42 BC, four years later than the one indicated by the last coin of the first published lot. This article collates the evidence of coin hoards from Palmyra in order to reflect on the causes behind some of the most dramatic events that befell the city in Late Antiquity and early Islam. After having stressed the importance of coin hoards as sources to reconstruct the city’s past by looking at a couple of examples dated to the fourth century AD, the article moves on to the early Islamic period. It argues that the unusual concentration of coin hoards dated to the second half of the seventh century suggests that the city underwent a period of unrest at that time and reflects on the causes that might have triggered it.

This paper presents an analysis on the coined gold from the second part of 4th century BC, discovered north of the Danube. Analysis results reveal that Greek gold staters spread north of the Danube in the last two decades of the 4th century BC, in the context of the wars between Alexander’s generals. Gold coins penetrated mainly due to the involvement of the West Pontic cities in these conflicts and the recruitment of mercenaries from populations situated in the Lower Danube region.

In the Ist century BC large quantities of drachmas issued by the Adriatic cities: Dyrrhachium and Apollonia arrived in the Dacians' territories. Many hoards, containing this kind of coins, were discovered in Transylvan ia, some of them being preserved in regional museums'collections. Unfortunately, many hoards, recorded in the oldest collections don't preserved the discovery places because of the lack of interested for such detailes in the time when those pieces were collected. In this situation is, also, this hoard, named Transylvania II because of the large probability to being discovered in this region, which provide interesting information regarding the typological evolution of Dyrrhachium and Apollonia coins and complete the data regarding the presence of those coins north to the Danube. The Roman coins discovered in various points across the commune of Tăcuta (Vaslui County, Romania) are presented: Tăcuta-“Dealul Miclea” (a possible coin hoard, of which four denarii were recovered: 1 AR Traianus, 3 AR Marcus Aurelius (1 AR Faustina)); Focş;easca-“Pietrăria”(?) (1 AR Traianus, 1 AR Hadrianus) and Cujba (?) (2 AE Constantius II, 1 AE Valens). No information was available for the rest of the coins (1 AR sub., 1 AE Gordianus III, 1 AE Constantius II, 1 AE Valens). They are part of private collections (Şt. Ciudin), public collections (The “Ştefan cel Mare” Museum of Vaslui) or their traces were lost. The monetary items are correlated with the numerous archaeological vestiges of the “Poieneş;ti” or “Sântana de Mureş;-Chernyakhiv” type, known to have been found in this area. In addition, this work interprets the monetary finds of Tăcuta in the broader context of the presence of Roman coins in the “barbarian” territory east from the Carpathians, throughout the 2nd-4th centuries AD. The hoard was unearthed in the sector named Kaya Odası located in the south of Villa Danae at Zeugma in 23.03.2009. It consist 424 bronze coins and coin fragments, which are dated 4th and 5th century A.D. The earliest identified coin in the hoard attributed to house of Constantine and the latest one attributed Leo I. The coins bear the type of monogram that is uncertain gives the possible latest date of the hoard, around AD 490. Most of the identifiable coins can be attributed to Leo I, Theodosius II and Marcianus. It might be said that great majority of the coins probably came from the eastern mints. Mints of Antioch and Carthage to be represented with 6 coins and Constantinople, Nicomedia and Rome follow them respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
