COTTONWOOD , *PLANT clones , *AGE , *DENSITY - Abstract
The objective of the present work was to determine the age of transition from juvenile to mature wood from the study of the axial and radial variation of density and to carry out descriptive models of distribution of juvenile and mature wood in the stem of Populus deltoides, clone 'Stoneville 67' of 20 years of age. The density presented an increase in its values from the medulla to the cortex and from the base to the apex. The transition age was determined between 10-12 years of age, the volume of juvenile and mature wood was 40% and 60%, respectively. The distribution of juvenile wood coincided with the central cylinder model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objectives of the work were 1- to determine the patterns of axial and radial variation of wood density and fiber length in the loge of Robinia pseudoacacia, 2- to determine the transition age between juvenile and mature wood, 3- Construct a descriptive model of distribution of juvenile wood in the log based on wood density and fiber length. Slices were cut at 4 heights in the trunk (0,3 m; 1,3m; 2,3m y 4m above the ground) in 10 trees from Buenos Aires-Argentina (7-15 years old) implanted in the Province of Buenos Aires. The normal density12% and fibre length were determined in radial specimens obtained every 3 growth rings at all heights. The density showed homogeneity values along the commercial shaft, with a range of magnitude that classified as semi-heavy wood (750 - 823 kg/m3). The fiber length showed radial increase of their values from pith to bark and no axial variations. The model of juvenile wood resembles the model of central cylinder but of smaller diameter at the apex. The juvenile cone would form until the age of 3-6 years.

Samples were taken at three heights and at 9 radial positions of the stem for the determination of basic density and morphometry of fibers and vessels. The radial variation patterns showed a slight increase in magnitude with age, whereas the axial variation showed up between the base and a height of 1.3 m in the stem, presenting different tendencies according to the variable. Depending on the analyzed variable, the age of transition between juvenile and mature wood was 5 to 10 years, or 10 to 15 years. Fiber length and width and vessel diameter were the first characters to mature. The average values of the properties of juvenile and mature wood showed no substantial differences between logs, therefore they could be considered as anatomically and density homogeneous.

The aim of this work was to determine the age at which the transition of the juvenile wood to the mature wood takes place, by means of the parameters: density, morphometry of fibers, and vessels in one poplar clone. Forest plantations of Salicaceae (poplars and willows) in Argentina are mainly used for the manufacture of pulp for newsprint. The rapid growth of these species results in a decrease in rotation age, which increases the proportion of juvenile wood. The aim of this work was to define the proportions of juvenile wood (JW) and mature wood (MW) of these species that can optimize the mechanical and optical properties of chemimechanical pulps for newsprint production. A two-component mixture type experimental design was used with proportions (JW:MW) of 0:100%, 25:75%, 50:50%, 75:25%, and 100:0%. When the mechanical properties were optimized, the highest desirability function was obtained with a JW:MW ratio of 100:0%, and the optimal ratio for optical properties was 0:100%. The pattern of variation of mechanical properties can be attributed to the higher density of MW, whilst that of the optical properties can be attributed to the higher content of extractives in the JW. - Abstract
Determination of heteroelement organic compounds at environmental levels requires highly efficient chromatographic separations and selective and sensitive detection. For this purpose, a capillary gas chromatographichelium atmospheric pressure microwave-induced plasma atomic emission detection method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 18 organochlorine and nine organophosphorus pesticides in water samples. Monitoring the emission lines for elements such as chlorine, phosphorus and sulfur ensures nearly specific chromatograms for these elements, increasing the selectivity markedly. On the other hand, to allow quantitative recoveries of these pesticides from aqueous samples, the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the target compounds was optimised using two sequential experimental designs. A 23 factorial design was initially performed to study the relative importance of three SPE main variables: sample volume, volume and percentage of dichloromethane in the elution solvent. Following this factorial design, a central composite design was used to demonstrate that the SPE conditions can be optimised to obtain the best overall recoveries of the 27 compounds studied. The extraction and determination techniques were applied to the determination of pesticides in waste water samples.

[EN] The KM3NeT research infrastructure, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea, will host neutrino telescopes for the identification of neutrino sources in the Universe and for studies of the neutrino mass hierarchy. These telescopes will house hundreds of thousands of photomultiplier tubes that will have to be operated in a stable and reliable fashion. In this context, the stability of the dark counts has been investigated for photomultiplier tubes with negative high voltage on the photocathode and held in insulating support structures made of 3D printed nylon material. Small gaps between the rigid support structure and the photomultiplier tubes in the presence of electric fields can lead to discharges that produce dark count rates that are highly variable. A solution was found by applying the same insulating varnish as used for the high voltage bases directly to the outside of the photomultiplier tubes. This transparent conformal coating provides a convenient and inexpensive method of insulation., The authors acknowledge the financial support of the funding agencies: Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Commission Europeenne (FEDER fund and Marie Curie Program), Institut Universitaire de France (IUF), IdEx program and UnivEarthS Labex program at Sorbonne Paris Cite (ANR-10-LABX-0023 and ANR-11-IDEX-0005-02), France; The General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT), Greece; Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Universita e della Ricerca (MIUR), Italy; Agence de l'Oriental and CNRST, Morocco; Stichting voor Fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie (FOM), Nederlandse organisatie voorWetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), the Netherlands; National Authority for Scientific Research (ANCS), Romania; Plan Estatal de Investigacion (refs.
