This paper introduces the high resolution palynological analyses carried out on samples from four cores drilled in the coastal plains of the Cornia and Pecora rivers, southern Tuscany, Italy. This study provides new information on the landscape transformations that the area has undergone over the past 7500 years, with focus on Medieval times when settlement patterns and land use contributed the onset of the current landscape. The study area, considered one of the most important early centres of the European civilization, has been fully investigated by the ERC funded nEU-Med project through an interdisciplinary approach combining archaeological, geomorphological, chemical, and archaeobotanical analyses. Environmental features and resource availability were explored through pollen markers of natural environments and human activities suggesting similarities and dissimilarities between the two valleys. In the Cornia Valley, the high diversity and percentages of woody taxa is connected to agrarian exploitation with arboriculture, while the Pecora Valley had a mostly open landscape, with lower diversity and higher percentages of anthropogenic pollen indicators. In both valleys, the land was mainly exploited for grazing resources: the high presence of pasture indicators suggests that domesticated animals should have been an important local resource especially in Medieval times. Pastoral/breeding activities fit into a larger context of management of the territory with specific vocation (namely, salt and iron in these two valleys). The detailed palynological analysis and the comparison between the two valleys highlight the local character of these activities, probably carried out in a collateral way by the peasant communities between the 7th-12th centuries AD. Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have become a species of great conservation priority because of widespread and ongoing population declines. Long‐distance translocations are becoming increasingly used to access a source population with densities high enough to support translocation. Two key uncertainties exist regarding the efficacy of long‐distance translocations: choosing a source population with adaptations that will be successful in a novel environment and mitigating the stress response common during the translocation process. We translocated bobwhites from the South Texas Plains and the Floridian Coastal Plain to a recipient site in the Floridian Coastal Plain in 2021 and 2022 to compare the survival and productivity of bobwhites translocated from two different source populations. We also evaluated how varying holding times during the translocation process influenced the success of the translocated individuals. Breeding season survival, nest propensity and fecundity were greater for Florida resident and Florida translocated bobwhites relative to Texas translocated bobwhites. We observed high rates of mortality during the transport and holding processes, but holding time did not affect breeding season survival of Texas translocated bobwhites. Both nest success and fecundity of Texas translocated bobwhites were negatively affected by holding time. Bobwhites translocated long distances may have the adaptive capacity to be successful in novel environments, but the consequences of translocation stress can be detrimental. Future translocation planning should consider choosing source populations from similar ecoregions to simultaneously decrease translocation distances and potential stress from translocation. Symbiotic nitrogen (N) fixation has the potential to replenish fire‐induced N losses in frequently burned ecosystems. A strong relationship between fire and fixation may exist because fire volatilizes N and mineralizes phosphorus (P), creating N‐poor, P‐rich soils that favour plants capable of N‐fixation. However, human activities have enriched ecosystems with N, which may complicate the interplay among fire, fixation and soil P.We evaluated how N and P modulate the relationship between fire and symbiotic N fixation in longleaf pine savannas, where it was previously documented that N fixation fails to replenish N losses from fire. Across gradients of stand age and fire frequency, we investigated how N and P availability influence fixation, and we established a nutrient addition experiment to evaluate the effects of N and P on legume growth, fixation and mycorrhizal investment.We uncovered a clear signal of P limitation of herbaceous legumes. Legume growth and fixation were linked to the availability of soil mineral P and were further stimulated by P additions. In contrast, neither soil N availability nor N additions affected legume growth or fixation.Synthesis. Our findings suggest that symbiotic N fixation in sandhill longleaf pine savannas is controlled by soil P availability, which varies according to soil age and parent material. Therefore, fixation may only counterbalance N losses from fire if there is enough P in the soil to support this process. Nonetheless, recent N enrichment in contemporary longleaf pine ecosystems may have reduced the importance of N fixation as a post‐fire recovery mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fire-adaptive traits in plants of tropical and subtropical grassy ecosystems have been the subject of considerable global research, but only recently studied in pyrogenic Florida subtropical grasslands. Plant growth forms, belowground organs, and post-fire recovery strategies were studied for 198 grassland specialists in peninsular Florida. Community types (dry-mesic, mesic, wet-mesic, and wet) were sampled with 1m2 plots along the edaphic-hydrologic gradient and the association between these variables and fire-related plant traits was tested using fourth-corner analysis. Caulescent herbs (43), cespitose graminoids (27), and rosette herbs (31) are the most common growth forms among species sampled. Plants with epigeogenous and hypogeogenous rhizomes dominate the sample plots, including matrix graminoids, shrub geoxyles, and an acaulescent rhizomatous fire-resilient palm (Serenoa repens). Most species (163; 82%) exhibit resprouting, including 30 facultative resprouters and 133 obligate resprouters. All woody rhizomatous species are obligate resprouters, and 35 ephemeral herbaceous species are obligate reseeders. Community type was a better predictor of species abundances than hydrology, however, hydrology was significantly associated with species traits measured, particularly rhizome texture, with woody rhizomes prevalent in all but the wet sites. Belowground organs (xylopodia, geoxylic suffructices) and growth form were associated with frequent fire and phylogeny, suggesting fire regime as a driver of community phylogenetic diversity. Persistence, rapid resilience and co-occurrence of geoxyles align Florida subtropical grasslands with other global geoxyle grasslands. Tropical cyclone causes large-scale devastation and destruction in the coastal plains of India, particularly in Odisha, which is the most cyclone-affected state in the country. Tropical cyclones are projected to be more powerful and widespread due to changing climate. Hence, the risk assessment of tropical cyclone is necessary to identify cyclone-risk areas in coastal Odisha which may help in the mitigation of the damages caused by cyclones. Therefore, this study utilizes geospatial techniques to produce a comprehensive risk map posed by tropical cyclones and to estimate the degree of risk for coastal districts of Odisha. For this, we evaluated the district-level cyclone risk for coastal Odisha using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique by considering 21 parameters for each of the four components of risk, i.e., exposure, hazard, vulnerability, as well as mitigation capacity. For each criterion, thematic raster map layers were created and weighted using a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP). We prepared individual risk component maps using weighted overlay techniques and finally integrated all indices to create the risk map. The study shows that 13% area of the study area comes under a very high-risk zone whereas, 25% area comes under a high-risk zone. The central (Cuttack, northern parts of Khordha, and south-western parts of Jajpur district) and the eastern part (most of the parts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and northern parts of Puri district) of the study area come under high to very high tropical cyclone impact zone. Almost 67% of the total area is highly vulnerable to tropical cyclones and mainly concentrated near the shoreline. The applied approach and results can assist the local authorities in identifying vulnerable and hazardous locations and developing workable solutions for the mitigation of revised cyclone threats in the coastal districts of Odisha. Insectivorous bats in temperate zones have evolved strategies such as migration or hibernation to overcome challenges of reduced resource availability and increased energy demand during winter. In the southeastern United States Coastal Plain, bats are either year‐round residents and remain active during winter or are migrants from colder areas seeking milder temperatures. Southeastern Coastal Plain forests also may represent important areas for remnant populations of species impacted by white‐nose syndrome. Working pine (Pinus spp.) forests comprise a large proportion of southeastern Coastal Plain forests, yet winter bat habitat associations and how forest management affects bat use remain understudied. Hence, we used hierarchical multispecies spatial occupancy models to evaluate factors influencing winter bat occupancy and foraging habitat associations in working forests of the southeastern Coastal Plain. From January to March 2020–2022, we deployed Anabat Swift acoustic detectors and measured site‐ and landscape‐level covariates on six working landscapes. We detected five species of bats and three species groups at 93% (224/240) of sites. We observed higher species richness at sites with high proportions of contiguous forest and low levels of basal area. At the species level, occupancy patterns were influenced by site and landscape covariates, which had varying effects on species with distinct foraging strategies. Temperature was an important predictor of detectability. Our findings offer new insights into the ecology of bats in working forest landscapes during winter, where we highlight positive responses in occupancy with contiguous forests and lower levels of basal area, as in previous summer work. By providing valuable information on winter community composition and foraging habitat associations, we hope to guide management decisions for forest attributes important to these species, thus increasing conservation opportunities within working forests. In the context of global warming, the accelerated degradation of circum-Arctic permafrost is releasing a significant amount of carbon. InSAR can indirectly reflect the degradation of permafrost by monitoring its deformation. This study selected three typical permafrost regions in North America: Alaskan North Slope, Northern Great Bear Lake, and Southern Angikuni Lake. These regions encompass a range of permafrost landscapes, from tundra to needleleaf forests and lichen-moss, and we used Sentinel-1 SAR data from 2018 to 2021 to determine their deformation. In the InSAR process, due to the prolonged snow cover in the circum-Arctic permafrost, we used only SAR data collected during the summer and applied a two-stage interferogram selection strategy to mitigate the resulting temporal decorrelation. The Alaskan North Slope showed pronounced subsidence along the coastal alluvial plains and uplift in areas with drained thermokarst lake basins. Northern Great Bear Lake, which was impacted by wildfires, exhibited accelerated subsidence rates, revealing the profound and lasting impact of wildfires on permafrost degradation. Southern Angikuni Lake's lichen and moss terrains displayed mild subsidence. Our InSAR results indicate that more than one-third of the permafrost in the North American study area is degrading and that permafrost in diverse landscapes has different deformation patterns. The taxonomy of many Hemidactylus geckos from the Horn of Africa has recently been evaluated. However, the lack of fresh material for some species and also regions has led to the misidentification of some taxa and an underestimation of the true diversity in others. In this study we analyse new material of Hemidactylus collected from poorly known coastal areas of northern Somaliland. Our results support the existence of two yet undescribed species within the arid clade. One of the new species is small-sized and closely related to H. afarensis from the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia, and together with two other species (H. foudaii, H. sinaitus) forms the monophyletic group for which we propose here the name sinaitus species group. The other new species is medium to large-sized, known from only one locality, and belongs to the macropholis species group, where it is a sister species of H. macropholis. Both new endemic species from the northern coastal hyper-arid plains highlight the role of northern Somaliland as an important biodiversity hotspot. Furthermore, our results show pronounced genetic diversity within H. macropholis, and imply possible existence of cryptic taxa within the species. Hemidactylus arnoldi and H. tropidolepis have, for the first time, been sequenced and placed in a phylogenetic context in this study. Our results confirm that H. tropidolepis is nested within the African radiation and is most closely related to H. funaiolii. Hemidactylus arnoldi clustered within the Arabian radiation of Hemidactylus and it was recovered as a sister lineage to all other species of the radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Miscanthus is a perennial grass that can yield substantial amounts of biomass in land areas considered marginal. In the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina, marginal lands are typically located in coarse‐textured soils with low nutrient retention and water‐holding capacity, and high erosivity potential. Little is known about miscanthus water use under these conditions. We conducted a study to better understand the efficiency with which miscanthus uses natural resources such as water and radiant energy to produce harvestable dry biomass in comparison to corn, a typical commodity crop grown in the region. We hypothesized that under non‐limiting soil water conditions, miscanthus would have greater available energy and water use rates owing to its greater leaf area, thus leading to greater agronomic yields. Conversely, these effects would be negated under drought conditions. Our measurements showed that miscanthus intercepted more radiant energy than corn, which led to greater albedo (by 0.05), lower net radiation (by 4% or 0.4 MJ m−2 day−1), and lower soil heat flux (by 69% or 1.0 MJ m−2 day−1) than corn on average. Consequently, miscanthus had greater available energy (by 7% or 0.6 MJ m−2 day−1) and water use rates (by 14% or 0.5 mm day−1) than corn throughout the growing season on average, which partially confirmed our hypothesis. Greater water use rates and radiation interception by miscanthus did not translate to greater water‐use (1.5 g kg−1 vs. 1.6 g kg−1) and radiation‐use (0.9 g MJ−1 vs. 1.1 g MJ−1) efficiencies than corn. Compared to literature values, our data indicated that water and radiation availability were not limiting at our study site. Thus, it is likely that marginal land features present at the Coastal Plain region such as low soil fertility and high air temperatures throughout the growing season may constrain agronomic yields even if soil water and radiant energy are non‐limiting. Combined heavy mineral analysis and detrital zircon geochronology have enabled us to track detritus supplied by the ancestral river systems draining the North American continent into the deep subsurface of the Gulf of Mexico, in both the coastal plain and the offshore deep water areas. During deposition of the Paleocene–Eocene Wilcox Group, sandstones in the western part of the area are interpreted as the products of the Rosita system derived via paleo-Rio Grande material, with a large component of sediment shed from the Western Cordillera. By contrast, samples from wells further east have high proportions of zircons derived from the Yavapai-Mazatzal Province and are attributed to the Rockdale system with sediment fed predominantly by the paleo-Colorado or paleo-Colorado-Brazos. There is evidence that sediment from the Rosita system occasionally extended into the central Gulf of Mexico, and, likewise, data indicate that the Rockdale system sporadically supplied sediment to the western part of the basin. During the Late Eocene of the central Gulf of Mexico (Yegua Formation) there was a distinct shift in provenance. The earlier Yegua sandstones have a large Grenville zircon component and are most likely to have had a paleo-Mississippi origin, whereas the later Yegua sandstones are dominated by zircons of Western Cordilleran origin, similar to Wilcox sandstones fed by the Rosita system via the paleo-Rio Grande. The switch from paleo-Mississippi to paleo-Rio Grande sourcing implies there was a major reorganisation of drainage patterns during the Late Eocene. Miocene sandstones in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico were principally sourced from the paleo-Mississippi, although the paleo-Red River is inferred to have contributed to the more westerly-located wells. Aim: Efforts to understand how pollinating insect diversity is distributed across large geographic areas are rare despite the importance of such work for conserving regional diversity. We sought to relate the diversity of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae), and butterflies (Lepidoptera) to ecoregion, landscape context, canopy openness, and forest composition across southeastern U.S. forests. Location: Nineteen experimental forests across nine states in the southeastern U.S. Methods: We established 5–7 plots on each experimental forest. In each, we sampled pollinators monthly (March–September) using coloured pan traps, and collected data on local forest characteristics. We used the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) to quantify surrounding landcover at different spatial scales. Results: Bee richness was negatively correlated with both the amount of conifer (pine) forest and the extent of wetlands in the surrounding landscape but was positively correlated with canopy openness. Hover flies and butterflies were less sensitive to landscape context and stand conditions. Pollinator communities differed considerably among ecoregions, with those of the Central Appalachian and Coastal Plain ecoregions being particularly distinct. Bee richness and abundance peaked 2 months earlier in Central Appalachia than in the Coastal Plain and Southeastern Mixed Forest ecoregions. Main Conclusions: Our findings reveal ecoregional differences in pollinator communities across the southeastern U.S. and highlight the importance of landscape context and local forest conditions to this diverse fauna. The closed broadleaf forests of Appalachia and the open conifer‐dominated forests of the Coastal Plain support particularly distinct pollinator communities with contrasting seasonality. Our results suggest pine forests may reduce pollinator diversity in regions historically dominated by broadleaf forests. However, efforts to create more open canopies can help improve conditions for pollinators in planted pine forests. Based on potential field data, anomalies derived from the EIGEN6C4 satellite model were used to interpret various structural features of the coastal plain, Southwest Cameroon volcanic line, northwestern margin of Congo Craton (CC) and southern extension of Pan-African belt. Since building a global comprehension of unknown phenomena about Earth's materials is of high relevance given the tectonic complexities of the investigated area, some edge enhancement techniques were applied to the gravimetric data. After generating the Bouguer anomalies, a cosine filter was used to provide the residual data set that should characterize the gravity effect arising from superficial density sources, and finally, some amplitude and phase-based edge detection methods were used to interpret the computed Bouguer and residual data. The results of this research work have demonstrated that the enhanced horizontal gradient amplitude and fast sigmoid edge detector (FSED) filters could detect density boundaries more successfully than the other filters tested. The structural map generated by FSED revealed that the delineated lineaments are oriented NW–SE, NE–SW, N–S and NNE–SSW. In addition, important tectonic features such as Central Cameroon, Kribi–Campo and Sanaga shear zones are indicative of the effectiveness of this methodological approach and the CC limit was better highlighted in this research work. In general, the lineament map enhances the knowledge of the structural setting of the Douala Kribi–Campo sedimentary basin as well as unexposed fracture zones that may have caused seismic events in recent years. The effectiveness of ecological security patterns (ESPs) in maintaining regional ecological stability and promoting sustainable development is widely recognized. However, limited research has focused on the early warning of risks inherent in ESPs. In this study, the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GHKMGBA) is taken as the study area, and ecological security risk zones are delineated by combining the landscape ecological risk index and habitat quality, and a multi-level ESP is constructed based on the circuit theory. The PLUS model was employed to simulate future built-up land expansion under different scenarios, which were then extracted and overlaid with the multi-level ESP to enable the multi-scenario early warning of ESP risks. The results showed the following: The ESP in the central plains and coastal areas of the GHKMGBA exhibits a high level of ecological security risk, whereas the peripheral forested areas face less threat, which is crucial for regional ecological stability. The ESP, comprising ecological sources, corridors, and pinch points, is crucial for maintaining regional ecological flow stability, with tertiary corridors under significant stress and risk in all scenarios, requiring focused restoration and enhancement efforts. There are significant differences in risk early warning severity within the ESP across various development scenarios. Under the ecological protection scenario, the ESP will have the best early warning situation, effectively protecting ecological land and reducing ecological damage, providing a valuable reference for regional development policies. Coastal backwater effects on low-gradient coastal plain rivers extend well upstream of the head of the estuary and propagate upstream as sea-level rises. Hydrological, geomorphological, and ecological indicators can serve as sentinels of the upriver encroachment. Analyzing the along-river spatial distribution of these indicators as a space-for-time substitution allows the prediction of sequential changes. Interpretation of results from 20 rivers in Virginia and the Carolinas shows that backwater effects at the leading edge result in higher river stages, increasing floodplain inundation, and raising water tables. Lower slopes and flow velocities reduce sediment transport, reducing river sediment input and floodplain deposition. This inhibits natural levee development, reducing bank heights. These factors combine to increase the frequency and duration of inundation, resulting in semi-permanently flooded wetlands. Anaerobic conditions limit organic decomposition, and ponding allows transported and suspended organic matter to settle, leading to organic muck and peat floodplain soils. This accumulation, coupled with general valley-filling, buries alluvial terrace remnants. Finally, vegetation changes driven by salinity increases occur, resulting in swamp conversions to brackish marsh. Backwater encroachment is strongly controlled by channel bed slope, with relatively steeper channels experiencing slower rates of tidal extension. With accelerating sea-level rise (SLR), the lowest-sloping channels could experience encroachment rates of >1 km yr−1. Hydrological changes associated with SLR are most rapid at the leading, upriver end—averaging 71 km upstream of the head of the estuary in the study rivers at present—and at the lowermost, downstream end of the fluvial-estuarine transition zone. Stable isotope abundances (δ18O and δ2H) in regional aquifers can provide important paleoclimate information. However, identifying paleoclimate signals can be complicated by cross-formational mixing and, potentially, by isotopic diffusion between aquifers and confining units. We examine controls on δ18O and δ2H distributions in the Wilcox aquifer of the northern Gulf Coastal Plain (USA). We sampled groundwater for δ18O, δ2H, Cl−, and 36Cl along a ~300 km downgradient transect. We developed a simplified, 1D numerical model of groundwater flow and 18O transport to assess the possible importance of isotopic diffusion between the aquifer and its confining units. Along the inferred flowpath, δ18O and δ2H values were depleted by as much as 1.3 and 8.2‰, respectively, as the Wilcox aquifer transitioned from unconfined to confined. However, they then gradually rose farther downgradient by up to 1.1 and 8.6‰. Chlorine-36 analyses and 14C analyses (from other studies) indicate that groundwater ages range from ~103 yr to ~8 × 105 yr. Modeling results indicate that the effect of diffusion on isotopic abundances is limited, whereas Cl− data indicate that cross-formational flow is limited. To explore both environmental change and the response of non‐fossilizing phytoplankton across the Cretaceous‐Paleogene (K‐Pg) boundary mass extinction event, we determined changes in organic matter (OM) sources using a range of apolar (n‐alkanes, acyclic isoprenoids, steranes, and hopanes) and polar (BIT index) biomarkers. We analyzed two K‐Pg proximal sections, located in the Mississippi Embayment, Gulf Coastal Plain (USA), covering ∼300 kyrs prior to and ∼3 myrs after the K‐Pg event. The OM abundance and composition changed dramatically across the boundary. The post‐impact ejecta layer and burrowed unit are characterized by an increase in the mass accumulation rate (MAR) of plant and soil biomarkers, including high‐molecular‐weight n‐alkanes and C29 steranes as well as the BIT index, related to an erosive period which transported terrestrial OM to the ocean in the aftermath of the impact event. At the same time, MARs of putative aquatic biomarkers decrease (low‐molecular‐weight n‐alkanes, C27 steranes and pristane and phytane), which suggests a collapse of the marine phytoplankton community. The increase of terrestrial OM to the ocean, during the first 280 kyrs after the Chicxulub impact event, is a combination of reworked kerogen, soil and some plant material. Crucially, within the latter part of this erosion period, only ∼160 kyrs after the K‐Pg do biomarkers return to distributions similar to those in the upper Cretaceous, although not to pre‐impact MARs. Thus, our results suggest a long‐term interval for the full sedimentary and ecological recovery of the non‐fossilizing phytoplankton community after this event. Determining the nature of the associated rapid environmental change and biotic recovery is critical for knowing the cause and effects of this key event and contributes to our understanding of the ongoing biodiversity crisis. We analyzed biomarkers (molecular fossils) in two K‐Pg sections in the Gulf Coastal Plain (USA) near the impact site, covering ∼300,000 years prior to, and ∼3,000,000 years after the K‐Pg event. The organic matter (OM) abundance and composition changed dramatically after the impact event. In particular, an increase in the concentration of plant and soil biomarkers occurred in the first 280,000 years after the impact and is attributed to an erosive period which transported OM from the land to the ocean. At the same time, the concentrations of marine algal biomarkers decrease, suggesting a collapse of the marine algal community. About 160,000 after the K‐Pg event, marine biomarkers return to distributions similar to those pre‐impact. This suggests an initial recovery of algal communities on the Gulf Coastal Plain, although they never recover to pre‐impact abundances during the studied interval (∼3,000,000 after impact). Vietnam's coastal aquifers face the challenge of saltwater intrusion due to factors like climate change, sea level rise, and over-exploitation. This issue is particularly prominent in the Central Coastal Region, where the plains are narrow and water resources are limited. In order to ensure sustainable management of groundwater, it is crucial to assess the vulnerability of Quaternary aquifers to saltwater intrusion. For evaluation of salt, fresh water distribution in the aquifers, we applied geophysical methods, along with water sampling and analysis from boreholes and wells. Additionally, we employed Geographic Information System (GIS) to delineate vulnerability zones to seawater intrusion. The GALDIT method, incorporating the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP), was used to assign weights to key indicators. The results indicate that saltwater intrusion has changed in recent years. In the North-central coastal plains, over half of the area (56.8% or 4061.8 km2) exhibits high vulnerability, while the South-central coastal plains show high vulnerability in approximately one-fifth of the area (18.8% or 1699 km2). Groundwater occurrence and the impact of existing seawater intrusion play pivotal roles in determining coastal aquifer vulnerability to saltwater intrusion. This underscores the significance of narrow, steep plains, and thin aquifers as key influential factors. To mitigate the risk of saltwater intrusion in production wells, it is crucial to consider regulating groundwater extraction in high vulnerability areas. This would limit capacity and minimize the possibility of saltwater intrusion. Non‐native species can spread rapidly through aquatic ecosystems in association with both natural and anthropogenic mechanisms, but the relative importance of these two mechanisms in determining the spread of a species is not always clear. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) has been introduced to multiple continents, including waterbodies in the United States where both natural and anthropogenic dispersal are likely to have contributed to its current distribution. The present study combined comparisons of historical and contemporary distributions of P. clarkii and several high conservation priority crayfish species, regional field sampling, and microsatellite‐based genetic approaches from the Pee Dee River basin in North Carolina and South Carolina to understand the dispersal patterns of P. clarkii and its potential effects on native crayfishes. Field sampling and microsatellite analyses revealed widespread populations of P. clarkii throughout the study area with catchment‐specific patterns of population genetic structure, wherein more distinct genetic structures were found in the basin with historic aquaculture activities and a longer period of occurrence. The rapid spread of P. clarkii has occurred concurrently with extirpations of populations of native crayfishes, namely the Waccamaw crayfish (Procambarus braswelli), the Carolina Sandhills crayfish (Procambarus pearsei) and the coastal plain crayfish (Procambarus ancylus). The rapid spread of P. clarkii and coincident extirpation of native crayfishes calls for more extensive regulatory controls to help prevent the intentional or accidental release of non‐native crayfishes through aquaculture practices, bait releases, the pet trade and the environmental education industry. Deltas and coastal plains worldwide developed under the influence of relative sea level rise (RSLR) during the Holocene. In the Netherlands, Holocene RSLR results from both regional sea-level rise and regional subsidence patterns, mainly caused by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA: Scandinavian forebulge collapse) and longer-term North Sea Basin tectono-sedimentary subsidence. Past coastal and inland water levels are preserved in geological indicators marking the gradual drowning of an area, for example basal peats. Such geological water-level indicators have been used in the Netherlands for varying types of research. However, uniform overviews of these data exist only for smaller local subsets and not for the entire Netherlands. In this paper we present a data set of 712 Holocene water-level indicators from the Dutch coastal plain that are relevant for studying RSLR and regional subsidence, compiled in HOLSEA workbook format. This format was expanded to allow for registering basal-peat type geological indicators, documenting Dutch-setting specific parameters and accompanying uncertainties, to assess indicative meaning, and to appropriately correct the raw vertical positions of the indicators. Overall, our new, internally consistent, expanded documentation provided for the water-level indicators encourages users to choose the information relevant for their research and report RSLR uncertainties transparently. From the indicators, 59 % was collected in 1950–2000, mainly in academic studies and survey mapping campaigns; 37 % was collected in 2000–2020 in academic studies and archaeological surveying projects, 4 % was newly collected (this study), the latter mainly in previously under sampled central and northern Netherlands regions. Prominent regional differences exist in the vertical position and abundance of the indicators. Older indicators in our data set are mostly located in the deeper seaward area of the Netherlands. These indicators correspond well with previous transgression reconstructions, that are partly based on the same data. The younger, landwards set of indicators in the Rhine-Meuse central and Flevoland regions corresponds with the transgression phase reaching further inland, from 8000 cal. BP onwards. Northern indicators of Middle Holocene age (8–5 ka cal. BP), in general lie 2–3 meters lower compared to those in the south. Siliceous sandstone (including quartzites), petrified wood, and agates located in Alabama and Mississippi were utilized as a toolstone resource during every recognized cultural period in the Lower Mississippi Valley region of the Southeastern United States. Regrettably, these materials have not been the focus of many provenance‐related investigations. Recent analyses of quartzite and sandstone from other regions in North America and from the Pyrenees were successful in discriminating sources using petrographic techniques. The current study examines the application of visible/near‐infrared reflectance and Fourier transform infrared reflectance (FTIR) spectroscopy on sourcing siliceous materials besides chert, particularly sandstones, orthoquartzites (quartz sandstone), petrified woods, and agates. This source characterization investigation focuses on a case study involving materials gathered from eight distinct collection sites, encompassing nine different siliceous resources collected in Alabama and Mississippi. These materials were sourced from two distinct geological formations: the Hattiesburg and Tallahatta. Results demonstrate the ability of non‐destructive reflectance spectroscopy and introduces a new outlier modeling method that detects, clusters, and separately models outliers with their own set of basis vectors. Principal component analyses, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression, linear discriminant function analysis (LDA), and random forest classification are used in this paper to better identify outlier elements as well as discriminate for stone materials accurately (between 67% and 100%). Although this is the first reflectance spectroscopy investigation used to characterize these materials for provenance applications, the preliminary results compare favorably with other provenance techniques whose aim is to quantify between‐formation (inter) and within‐formation (intra) outcrop variation. The quantified and differentiated sources, based on the hyperspectral signatures of the material, will provide a better understanding of prehistoric reliance on these lithic resources and produces a proxy to determine mobility, social interaction, and other past behavior. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) grown on infertile coastal plain soils typically shows a growth response to N and P applied at mid-rotation. The objectives of this study were to determine whether less soluble poultry litter ash (PLA) provides an adequate supply of P compared to triple superphosphate (TSP), and assess effects on P mineralization and runoff loss. Effects of 56 kg P ha−1 as either PLA or TSP, and no fertilization were compared using an 11-year-old stand of two loblolly pine genotypes on a loamy sand in a completely randomized design. Tree height, diameter and foliar nutrients, soil Mehlich 3 P and phosphatase activity (A and E horizons), and P in surface runoff were monitored. Through more than two years, P fertilization had no effect on tree growth. Similar foliar P with PLA or TSP, together with increasing foliar and soil P over time, suggested that PLA is an adequate source of P for loblolly pine. Neither fertilizer suppressed P mineralization as measured by phosphatase activity. The advantage of PLA compared to TSP is potentially much less runoff P loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new methodology to map Italian coastal areas at risk of flooding is presented. This approach relies on detailed projections of the future sea level from a high-resolution, three-dimensional model of the Mediterranean Sea circulation, on the best available digital terrain model of the Italian coasts, and on the most advanced satellite-derived data of ground motion, provided by the European Ground Motion Service of Copernicus. To obtain a reliable understanding of coastal evolution, future sea level projections and estimates of the future vertical ground motion based on the currently available data were combined and spread over the digital terrain model, using a GIS-based approach specifically developed for this work. The coastal plains of Piombino-Follonica and Marina di Campo (Tuscany Region), Alghero-Fertilia (Sardinia), and Rome and Latina-Sabaudia (Lazio Region) were selected as test cases for the new approach. These coastal stretches are important for the ecosystems and the economic activities they host and are relatively stable areas from a geological point of view. Flood maps were constructed for these areas, for the reference periods 2010–2040, 2040–2070, and 2040–2099. Where possible, the new maps were compared with previous results, highlighting differences that are mainly due to the more refined and resolved sea-level projection and to the detailed Copernicus ground motion data. Coastal flooding was simulated by using the "bathtub" approach without considering the morphodynamic processes induced by waves and currents during the inundation process. The inundation zone was represented by the water level raised on a coastal DTM, selecting all vulnerable areas that were below the predicted new water level. To ensure soil preservation, it is essential to incorporate the soil's ability to provide ecosystem services into the spatial planning process. For well‐informed planning decisions, stakeholders need spatially explicit information on the state of the soils and the functions they fulfil, with sufficient spatial resolution and quantified uncertainty. It has been shown that Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) products can provide such information. However, in some cases, fine spatial resolution coupled with high levels of uncertainty may lead stakeholders to overlook the inherent uncertainties in the information. Spatial aggregation of DSM products opens up a promising avenue for obtaining maps that are more tailored to the users' scales of decision making while facilitating uncertainty communication. In this perspective, we propose a new spatial aggregation approach relying on spatially constrained agglomerative clustering (AC). The spatial aggregation approach is applied to a 25‐m‐resolution soil potential multifunctionality index (SPMI) map developed for the coastal plain of the Occitanie Region. This DSM product was increasingly aggregated to obtain SPMI maps of different resolutions displaying two distinct areal metrics: proportions of area above a given threshold of SPMI, and mean SPMI. Each map was evaluated through a set of indicators selected for their potential impact on user decision making: mean spatial resolution, overall predicted uncertainty, quantity of information and mean within‐unit variability. The maps were compared with respect to these indicators to other maps obtained with alternative aggregation methods employed in DSM literature (maps aggregated according to some administrative units and QuadMaps). We show that all the tested aggregation methods produced a substantial decrease of the map uncertainty with moderate loss of spatial resolution. However, only AC preserved the fine spatial pattern of the initial DSM product while enabling fine tuning of the uncertainty displayed to end‐users. We show that AC can simplify the identification of extensive regions characterized by low uncertainty without losing information regarding soil multifunctionality, thereby facilitating and enhancing the efficiency of planning decisions. Large and diverse Eocene otolith assemblages have been described from the US Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains, various basins in Europe, and New Zealand. Here we described a highly diverse otolith association from the middle Eocene (Lutetian and Bartonian) strata of southern California, San Diego County, which was retrieved from the heritage of John E. Fitch (1918-1982) in the archives of the Ichthyology Department of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, Califronia. The collection represents the first Eocene otolith assemblage described from the Northeastern Pacific and stems from two localities: the Ardath Shale at Black’s Beach in the Torrey Pines Park just south of Black’s Canyon Road and north of the Salk Fault on the Pacific shore face, and the MissionValley Formation from the west-facing graded hill just east of the Miramar Water Treatment Plant near the southern shore of Miramar Reservoir. The Ardath Shale was deposited on the deep shelf and continental slope while the Mission Valley Formation represent an inland, nearshore environment during times of the maximum transgression. A total of more than15,000 otoliths were found representing 96 species of which 53 are described as new and 12 remain in open nomenclature. The fauna of the Ardath Shale is distinctly richer containing 88 species while the one from the Miramar Reservoir site yielded 38 species. The low diversity at the Miramar Reservoir site is thought to be related to the shallow-water environment in which it was deposited whereas the high diversity at Black’s Beach reflects a mixture of shelf and bathyal fishes. In addition, 24 new otolith-based genera are established, four of which are in the category “incertae sedis”. Furthermore, five new species are described from a comparative otolith collection from the US Gulf Coast Eocene and one new species from a comparative collection from the Lutetian of Balegem in Belgium. The Eocene otolith-based fish fauna from California is assessed for its paleoecological, paleobiogeographic and evolutionary significance. Particular emphasis is directed towards the elucidation of the evolution of the early Ophidiiformes, which during the early Paleogene were predominantly adapted to warm, clastic shallow-water environments and there were competing in abundance and diversity with other percomorphs (e.g., perciforms s.l.). A warm Eocene paleobioprovince is proposed for the Californian fish fauna which is not related to today’s endemic Northwest Pacific fish fauna along the regime of the cold-water California Current. The development of transgenic crop varieties capable of utilizing phosphite (Phi) as a phosphorus (P) source is a promising strategy to increase P use efficiency while decreasing reliance on phosphate (Pi)‐based fertilizers. However, little information is available on Phi sorption and desorption in soils. We conducted batch experiments to investigate the sorption of Phi and Pi by three Ultisols from the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States. At the soils' acidic field pH (pH 4.7–6.2), Pi had a higher affinity than Phi for soil solids, where maximum sorbed concentrations of Pi were an average of 44% greater than those of Phi. The sorption of both P species decreased when experiments were repeated adjusting soil pH to 6.5. More Phi than Pi was recovered during desorption experiments, indicating that Phi was more reversibly sorbed and, therefore, may be more plant‐available than Pi. Multiple linear regression between calculated linear distribution coefficients (KD; 10 mg P L−1 input solutions) and soil properties suggested that amorphous Al‐ and Fe‐oxides controlled Pi sorption. Alternatively, amorphous Al‐oxides and gibbsite controlled Phi sorption. Our results show that a lower affinity of Phi than Pi in Ultisols could improve P availability for plant uptake of Phi‐based fertilizers but may increase the risk of soil P buildup over time. Quantifying the flow rate distribution in a multiple‐screen recharge well is relevant to understanding groundwater flow and solute transport behavior in managed aquifer recharge (MAR) operations. In this study, an impeller flowmeter was deployed to measure flow rate distribution in a multiple‐screen MAR well under both recharge and pumping conditions screened in the multiple‐strata of the Virginia Coastal Plain aquifer system. Preferential flow distribution in the well was observed through the uppermost screens during recharge while flow distribution was more evenly distributed along all screens under pumping conditions. Analysis of flow along individual screens also indicates preferential flow to the upper part of the screen during both recharge and pumping. Comparison of flowmeter results under both recharge and pumping conditions to previous site‐specific measurements suggests that the distribution of flow may vary with time, depending on well screen condition and well rehabilitation efforts, and should be monitored over the duration of an MAR project. These results have implications for groundwater quality given that flow distribution in a multiscreen recharge well has profound impact on travel time and on transport modeling if flow is assumed to be steady and consistent under a range of operational conditions. Urban flood vulnerability monitoring requires a large amount of socioeconomic and environmental data collected at regular time intervals. However, collecting such a large volume of data poses a significant constraint in assessing changes in flood vulnerability. This study proposed a novel method to monitor spatiotemporal changes in urban flood vulnerability from satellite nighttime light (NTL) data. Peninsular Malaysia was chosen as the research region as floods are the most devastating and recurrent phenomena in the region. The study developed a flood vulnerability index (FVI) based on socioeconomic and environmental data from a single year. This FVI was then linked to NTL data using an Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) machine learning algorithm. The model was calibrated and validated with administrative unit scale data and subsequently used to predict FVI at a spatial resolution of 10 km for 2000–2018 using NTL data. Finally, changes in estimated FVI at different grid points were evaluated using the Mann-Kendall trend method to determine changes in flood vulnerability over time and space. Results showed a nonlinear relationship between NTL and flood vulnerability factors such as population density, Gini coefficient, and percentage of foreign nationals. The ANFIS technique performed well in estimating FVI from NTL data with a normalized root-mean-square error of 0.68 and Kling-Gupta Efficiency of 0.73. The FVI revealed a high vulnerability in the urbanized western coastal region (FVI ∼ 0.5 to 0.54), which matches well with major contributing regions to flood losses in Peninsular Malaysia. Trend assessment showed a significant increase in flood vulnerability in the study area from 2000 to 2018. The spatial distribution of the trend indicated an increase in FVI in the urbanized coastal plains, particularly in rapidly developing western and southern urban regions. Coastal wetlands are of paramount importance as major reservoirs of blue carbon (C), playing a crucial role in providing nature-based solutions to mitigate climatic changes. This research aimed to analyse the dynamics of total blue C (TBC) and its components; viz. soil organic C (SOC), below ground C, and above ground C; as well how they are influenced by land use/ land cover (LULC) categories and wetland situations. Subsequently, study were identified as one restored wetland and another degraded wetland in the Medinipur Coastal Plain, India. The LULC categories were analyzed using Pleiades 1A and 1B satellite imagery, corresponding to the restored and degraded wetland, respectively. The quantification of SOC was based on point-specific sample data collected from both wetlands (nr=250; nd=84). Above ground biomass (AGB) was appraised employing allometric relationships involving field-measured dendrometric variables. Below ground biomass values were calculated using indirect allometric equations that take into account the AGB values. Integrating all the components, TBC stock of the restored and degraded wetlands were estimated at 246710.91 Mg and 7865.49 Mg, respectively. In the restored wetland, dense mangrove and open mangrove exhibited higher concentrations of blue C components, while other LULC categories demonstrated moderate to low densities. In the degraded wetland, the open mangrove category rec-high densities of C pools, whereas herbaceous vegetation, bare earth and sand, and waterbody exhibited lower concentrations. The results portrayed significant disparities (P<0.05) in blue C pools among different LULC categories in both wetlands. Furthermore, it was evident that wetland type and LULC category had notable (P<0.001) impacts on TBC dynamics, both individually and in combination. Overall, this research may aid in effective management of coastal wetlands as blue C sinks, emphasizing their significance as essential elements of climate mitigation strategies. It is the prerequisite for rural revitalization to recognize the evolutionary laws and different characteristics of rural areas. China's Rural Revitalization Strategic Plan (2018–2022) emphasizes the importance of rural territorial classification. The differences in resources, environment, economy, culture and so on in Jiangsu Province lead to obvious territorial classifications. Existing studies on rural development lack the differentiation of territorial types. Based on the complexity and comprehensiveness of the rural areas in Jiangsu Province, this paper selects the county as the basic unit and combines the "top-down" and "bottom-up" evaluation perspectives. Finally, we form a "two divisions and six zones" division scheme for rural areas in Jiangsu Province. Specifically, the two divisions refer to the Yangtze River Delta area and Huaihai area, and the six zones include Tai Lake plain area, Ningzhen mountainous and hilly area, Riverside plain area, Lixia River and coastal plain area, Huai River drainage area, and Xuhuai Plain area. By summarizing the laws and development orientation of different types of rural areas, it will provide a reference for realizing urban–rural integration and sustainable development in economically developed areas. Illegal collecting of wild Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) for the horticultural trade represents a persistent threat to populations of the species across their endemic range in the coastal plain of North and South Carolina (United States). Although wild collecting of Venus flytraps is not a novel threat, there has been very little research on the impacts of collecting on the species' conservation to date or why an illegal trade persists alongside a legal one. We drew on qualitative expert stakeholder elicitation to contextualize the threat of illegal collecting to the long‐term conservation of Venus flytraps in relation to other anthropogenic threats. Expert elicitation included botanical and conservation researchers, cognizant state and federal agency staff, land managers, and conservation nonprofit actors. The workshop included mapping of supply chain structures and prioritization of social and environmental harms. Expert consensus determined illegal collecting is an ongoing problem for Venus flytrap conservation, but habitat destruction, degradation, and fire suppression are the most significant threats to flytrap conservation. Supply chain analysis showed that observable social and environmental harms of the trade are focused at the supply stage and that less is known about transit and demand stages. Key research gaps identified include a lack of understanding of plant laundering practices relevant to a range of desirable plant taxa; the role of commercial nurseries in illicit horticultural supply chains; motivations for engaging in Venus flytrap collecting; and the persistent demand for illegally harvested plants when cultivated, legally obtainable plants are readily available. Our findings and methodology are relevant to a range of ornamental plants affected by illegal trade for which robust social data on illegal collecting drivers are lacking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are impacting global temperatures, ecological systems, and human societies. Natural carbon sequestration through the conservation of soil and native ecosystems may slow or reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, and thus slow or mitigate the rate of global warming. Most of the research investigating carbon sequestration in natural systems occurs in forested ecosystems, however rare ecosystems such as coastal plain marshes and wet-mesic sand prairie collectively may serve as significant carbon sinks. Our objectives were to measure and assess the importance of carbon sequestration in three rare ecosystems (oak-pine barrens, coastal plain marsh, and wet-mesic sand prairie) in western Lower Michigan. We measured carbon in standing vegetation, dead organic matter, and soils within each ecosystem and adjacent encroaching forested areas. Driven by tree carbon, total carbon stocks in encroaching areas were greater than in intact rare ecosystems. Soil organic carbon was greater in all intact ecosystems, though only significantly so in coastal plain marsh. Principal components analysis explained 72% of the variation and revealed differences between intact ecosystems and their encroaching areas. Linear models using the ratio of red to green light reflectance successfully predicted SOC in intact coastal plain marsh and wet-mesic sand prairie. Our results infer the importance of these rare ecosystems in sequestering carbon in soils and support the need to establish federal or state management practices for the conservation of these systems. This study deals with the statistical analysis of climate variables (temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall) and the analysis of data and values of climate characteristics for the period of 2006- 2016 in Aden Governorate. The normal distribution of climate variable data was verified, and the values of basic descriptive statistics were determined. The differences between their means were identified, the relationship between climate variables and rainfall was studied, and the effect of both temperature and relative humidity on the rainfall was considered. The data for the climate variables under study was found to be normally distributed, and there were no statistically significant differences between the values of the maximum and minimum temperature variables. It was found that there were statistically significant differences between the values of the relative humidity variable and the rainfall variable, as well as a strong statistically significant direct relationship between the maximum and minimum temperatures, and a strong statistically significant inverse relationship between maximum temperatures and relative humidity, as well as a moderate statistically significant inverse relationship between minimum temperatures and relative humidity, while there was a weak direct relationship between temperatures (Maximum and minimum) and the rainfall. Furthermore, there was a weak inverse relationship between relative humidity and rainfall, and this is a reflection of the location of Aden Governorate on the southern coastal plains of Yemen, which is located within the hot tropical region. There was no statistically significant effect of climate variables (maximum and minimum temperatures, and relative humidity) on the rainfall in Aden Governorate, due to its location and the influence of other factors such as the direction of the winds blowing onto it, especially in the summer. Along the western coastal plain of the Red Sea, the discovery of lithic tools proved that the occurrence of archaeological remains belonged to the Stone Age era. Unfortunately, until recently, most of the Stone Age site plans in the western Red Sea periphery have been unknown because of change in climate in addition to covering these sites with a large layer of sand. Recently, remote sensing (RS) data have proven to be effective at identifying buried archaeological sites using radar satellite imagery due to their ability to penetrate the land surface. This paper aims to identify and reconstruct several potential Stone Age sites using radar satellite images in the Tokar region, North-Eastern Sudan, on the western plain of the Red Sea. Radar (Sentinel-1 SAR GRD: C-band) data were processed utilizing the advantages of the Google Earth Engine platform and Snap software. The results of this research showed that some potential settlements belonging to the Stone Age era (expectedly dating back to the end of the Pleistocene and/or the initial phase of the Holocene) have subcircular shapes with some interior subcircles. These results shed new light on the potential construction technique, size, and function of the settlement in the Stone Age era and can provide some initial insights into the ancient lifestyle in this region. Working forests comprise a large proportion of forested landscapes in the southeastern United States and are important to the conservation of bats, which rely on forests for roosting and foraging. While relationships between bat ecology and forest management are well studied during summer, winter bat ecology remains understudied. Hence, we aimed to identify the diet composition of overwintering bats, compare the composition of prey consumed by bat species, and determine the potential role of forest bats as pest controllers in working forest landscapes of the southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain. During January to March 2021–2022, we captured 264 bats of eight species. We used DNA metabarcoding to obtain diet composition from 126 individuals of seven bat species identifying 22 orders and 174 families of arthropod prey. Although Coleoptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera were the most consumed orders, we found that bats had a generalist diet but with significant differences among some species. We also documented the consumption of multiple insect pests (e.g., Rhyacionia frustrana) and disease vectors (e.g., Culex spp). Our results provide important information regarding the winter diet of bats in the southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain and their potential role in controlling economically relevant pest species and disease vectors. Three species of pocket mice (Chaetodipus artus , C. goldmani , and C. pernix) characterize the Sinaloan subregion of the Sonoran regional desert. They occur primarily in Sinaloan thornscrub and monsoon (dry deciduous) forest biotic communities, both of which have suffered from agricultural conversion. Sinaloan thornscrub occurs along the coastal plains of southern Sonora and Sinaloa, México, and grades into monsoon forest in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental. We describe the geographical and ecological distributions of the 3 species of Chaetodipus , evaluate evolutionary relationships within each species based on mitochondrial DNA sequence data, and compare these to previously described phenetic, allozymic, and chromosomal variation. We elevate the subspecies of C. pernix to full species, delineate evolutionary units within C. goldmani and C. artus that we formally recognize as subspecies, and evaluate the conservation status of all 3 species of Chaetodipus. Gaza Ware, one of the hallmarks of Palestinian pottery in Late Islamic/Ottoman times, was produced in the southern Coastal Plain and is characterised by dark-coloured fabric and a large variety of vessel forms. Although most scholars agree that Gaza Ware was already in use in the 18th century and continued into the 20th century, the earliest appearance of this pottery is still under debate. This article offers new insights into Gaza Ware typology and chronology, based on published and unpublished ceramic assemblages from excavated contexts in southern and central Palestine. More specifically, it is suggested here that the advent of Gaza Ware can be traced back to the 17th, if not the 16th, century, and morphological and fabric criteria to discern between 'early' and 'late' variants of certain vessel types are presented. This fresh look at Gaza Ware will hopefully assist archaeologists and ceramic specialists dealing with Late Islamic Southern Levantine contexts to fine-tune the chronology of contemporaneous ceramics and excavated remains. Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Asian citrus psyllid, ACP) is a devastating pest due to transmission of Liberibacter spp. to citrus plants. We identified presumed entomopathogenic fungi (EF) naturally associated with field-collected adult ACP, both killed (mycosed) and alive, at 14 field sites in the Gulf Coastal Plain of NE Mexico. On dead ACP, five species of EF (Hypocreales) were observed: Hirsutella citriformis Speare (Ophiocordycipitaceae), Cordyceps javanica (Frieder. & Bally) Kepler, Shrestha & Spatafora, Beauveria cf. bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., and Akanthomyces cf. lecanii (Cordycipitaceae); also, Niveomyces J.P.M. Araújo & C. de Bekker (Cordycipitaceae), a hyperparasite of Ophiocordycipitaceae, in this case H. citriformis. The most prevalent fungi on field ACP were H. citriformis and C. javanica, on dead and on live, incubated insects, respectively. In laboratory bioassays, C. javanica and H. citriformis conidia from cultures killed >60% of ACP adults. H. citriformis, C. javanica, and A. lecanii killed >60% nymphs. Niveomyces was observed only growing on H. citriformis fructifications on field-killed ACP; it was absent from live incubated insects, indicating Niveomyces is a mycoparasite on H. citriformis. Niveomyces cultures (ARSEF 10230) on agar grew as a Pleurodesmospora synanamorph; its LSU rRNA region D1–D2 sequences (Genbank OM780101) were 99.81% identical to Niveomyces sequences. Conidia from Niveomyces cultures were entomopathogenic on ACP nymphs and adults. These are the first reports of Niveomyces associated with H. citriformis; of the in vitro dimorphic growth (synanamorphs) Niveomyces/Pleurodesmospora; and of experimental verification of entomopathogenicity of Niveomyces. In the present study, we use broadband seismic data recorded by 190 stations of the EarthScope program's Transportable Array to construct a 3‐D shear wave velocity model for the upper 180 km using a non‐linear Bayesian Monte‐Carlo joint inversion of receiver functions (RFs) and Rayleigh wave dispersion curves. Ambient noise and teleseismic data are used for obtaining Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion curves. A resonance removal filtering technique is applied to the RFs contaminated by reverberations from the thick sedimentary layers that cover most of the region. Our observations of the higher crustal shear velocities (∼3.40 km/s) beneath the Sabine Block (SB), along with the estimated relatively thicker crust (∼34.0 km) and lower crustal Vp/Vs estimates (∼1.80) in comparison with the rest of the Gulf Coastal Plain (GCP) (∼3.10 km/s for crustal shear velocities, ∼29.0 km for crustal thickness, and ∼1.90 for crustal Vp/Vs estimates), indicating that this crustal block has different crustal properties from the surrounding coastal plain regions. The southern Ouachita Mountains have a thin crust (∼30.0 km) and low mean crustal Vp/Vs value (∼1.73), suggesting that lower crustal delamination has occurred in this region. Low velocities in the upper mantle beneath most of the GCP are interpreted as a combined result of thin lithosphere, higher‐than‐normal temperatures, and possibly compositional variations. Plain Language Summary: The Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain and its adjacent areas of the South‐Central United States contain some of the largest hydrocarbon reserves in the world. Thus an improved understanding about the formation mechanism and evolution of the region is important for both theoretical and practical reasons. In this study, we apply several computationally intensive techniques to image the upper 180 km of the Earth's interior beneath the South‐Central United States. Our results suggest that the crustal properties of the Sabine Block, located in the northern coast of the Gulf Coastal Plain (GCP), are different in comparison with the surrounding coastal plain regions. They are also consistent with the notion that the southern Ouachita Mountains have lost the lower part of its original crust into the deep mantle through a process called delamination. Low velocities are observed from approximately 30 to at least 180 km deep beneath most of the GCP, which are attributed to the thin lithosphere that allows the replacement of low‐velocity asthenospheric materials, higher‐than‐normal temperatures of the region, and probably also compositional changes beneath the GCP. Etheostoma parvipinne (Goldstripe Darter) is an ecologically enigmatic percid native to lowland streams in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. Our observations from 6 separate localities across Alabama suggest that Goldstripe Darters seasonally move from resident stream habitats to isolated seepages and vernal pools to spawn. Specifically, at 6 separate sites in Alabama we documented Goldstripe Darters inhabiting and reproducing in isolated seasonal pools and semi-isolated seeps with other vernal pool spawners including mole salamanders (Ambystoma spp.). Notably, some vernal pools used by Goldstripe Darters for reproduction were located >100 m away from the nearest creek with no observed aquatic connection or atop incised stream banks several meters tall. Similar behaviors have been documented in some members of the revised clade Psychromaster and Etheostoma trisella (Trispot Darter), which are listed as special concern, threatened, or endangered by federal and state agencies. While the Goldstripe Darter was previously hypothesized to spawn in seasonal floodplain and spring seepage habitats, we are the first to document this behavior; however, it is not yet clear if this behavior is range wide. Melaleuca polandii, commonly known as "Gold-tipped Bottlebrush", is widely grown in Indian gardens and parks as an ornamental plant. In the present study, the chemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of M. polandii leaf essential oil (MPLEO) have been investigated. GC-MS analysis of MPLEO isolated from plants grown along the coastal plains of Eastern India revealed the presence of 50 constituents with α-pinene (46.17%), 3Z-hexenyl acetate (10.10 %), α-terpineol (5.43%), limonene (3.63%) and ρ-cymene (2.44 %) as the major constituents. MPLEO exhibited moderate antioxidant capacity in DPPH, ABTS and Reducing ability assays with IC50 values of 7.94 ± 0.34 μg/mL, 5.71 ± 0.21 μg/mL and EC50 7.09 ± 0.35 μg/mL, respectively. Of the 5 bacterial strains tested, the EO exhibited highest sensitivity against Bacillus subtilis with the ZOI of 12.66 ± 0.57 mm and strong antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus saprophyticus with MIC value of 6.25 μg/mL. MPLEO exhibited significant cytotoxic effects against Human alveolar lung adenocarcinoma (A549), Human hepato-cellular carcinoma (HepG2), Human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and normal Human Embryonic Kidney cell (HEK-293) as evaluated through MTT assay with IC50 values of 9.5 ± 0.38 μg/mL, 22.73 ± 0.95 μg/mL, 20.41 ± 0.82 μg/mL and 237.68 ± 9.26 μg/mL, respectively. The findings of the present study demonstrated that MPLEO could be considered as a potential bioresource having applications in pharmaceutical industries as an antibacterial and antiproliferative agent. Lecidea varians is among the most common and abundant bark-dwelling crustose lichens in temperate eastern North America. As presently delimited, it is highly variable, including chemical and morphological diversity well beyond that currently accepted for most lichen species. The generic placement of L. varians has also been questioned for decades. It has long been recognized as aberrant in Lecidea and Pyrrhospora, excluded from Lecidella, and more recently transferred to Traponora. Drawing from the results of extensive chemical, molecular phylogenetic and morphological studies, we show that L. varians and its relatives represent a previously unrecognized lineage within the speciose lichen family Lecanoraceae. The lineage appears to occupy an isolated position, distinct from the aforementioned genera, and is newly described as the genus Xanthosyne (typified by L. varians). The chemical and morphological variation within L. varians is mirrored by, but not entirely correlated with, considerable molecular diversity. A new taxonomy is proposed for L. varians and its relatives to serve as a framework for future studies. Three species are recognized: X. varians (≡ Lecidea varians), common and widespread in parts of North America; X. granularis, a new species from the Atlantic Coast of eastern North America that differs morphologically from X. varians in having a leprose thallus; and X. sharnoffiorum, a new species also found mainly along the Atlantic Coast of eastern North America, which has a coarsely granular, non-leprose thallus and produces a unique, unidentified xanthone. Multiple well-supported lineages were recovered within X. varians that correlate to varying degrees with chemical and morphological variability, as well as geographic distribution. Eight subspecies are recognized to accommodate the variation within X. varians: X. varians subsp. exigua comb. nov. (≡ Lecidea exigua) characterized by the presence of atranorin and a consistent set of three xanthones, is widespread in southern Europe and western North America (coastal California); X. varians subsp. varians (≡ Lecidea varians) is distributed mainly in northeastern North America and produces thuringione and arthothelin; X. varians subsp. morsei subsp. nov. is morphologically and chemically variable, with one chemotype (thiophanic acid) with a northeastern distribution, and the other with a unique and unidentified xanthone, found mainly in the interior U.S.A.; X. varians subsp. obscura subsp. nov. occurs mainly in the central U.S.A. and North Temperate regions, produces a unique, unidentified xanthone and generally has black apothecia with green epihymenial pigments; X. varians subsp. pseudomorsei subsp. nov. and X. varians subsp. submorsei subsp. nov. resemble X. varians subsp. morsei but differ in molecular sequence characters; X. varians subsp. subtilis comb. nov. (≡ Lecidea subtilis) and X. varians subsp. subexigua subsp. nov. occur in the Appalachian Mountains, the former producing atranorin and the latter lacking atranorin, both with thiophanic acid with or without other xanthones. In an addendum, Lecidella subviridis is discussed with respect to the genus Xanthosyne. An identification key is provided for all species and their subspecies within Xanthosyne. The White-tailed Hawk (Geranoaetus albicaudatus) is listed as a state threatened species in Texas. It occupies prairies and savannas of the Gulf Coastal Plain, but also the barrier islands, many of which are exposed to rapid development and other human disturbances. This is a concern as White-tailed Hawks are known to be highly sensitive to nesting disturbance. We examined the breeding ecology of White-tailed Hawks on 3 Texas barrier islands with low (Matagorda Island) and high (Mustang and North Padre Islands) human disturbance. We found nearest-neighbor distances of nesting pairs were lowest on the island with low human disturbance (1.9 ± 0.9 km) compared to those on islands with high disturbance (2.6 ± 0.8 to 5.6 ± 3.8 km). The highest and lowest daily survival rates for nests occurred on the low human disturbance island in 2006 (0.9954) and 2007 (0.9876). The number of fledglings produced per nesting attempt was significantly lower in 2007 compared to 2006 on the low human disturbance island (P = 0.024), but there was no difference in productivity between years on the high human disturbance islands (P = 0.845). The lower density but larger fledgling numbers in the high human disturbance area may be a result of fewer White-tailed Hawks having adapted to human disturbance, but that lower density allowing for increased territory sizes and wider access to prey resources which, in turn, may have yielded increased productivity. In contrast the low human disturbance areas appear to be saturated and productivity may be limited by density-dependent factors. If White-tailed Hawks are to be conserved on the barrier islands, a better understanding of the species' tolerance and adaptability to human disturbance is needed, and a balance will need to be found between continued anthropogenic development and maintenance of adequate foraging and nesting habitat. The Late Cretaceous of western North America supported diverse dinosaur assemblages, though understanding patterns of dinosaur diversity, evolution, and extinction has been historically limited by unequal geographic and temporal sampling. In particular, the existence and extent of faunal endemism along the eastern coastal plain of Laramidia continues to generate debate, and finer scale regional patterns remain elusive. Here, we report a new centrosaurine ceratopsid, Lokiceratops rangiformis, from the lower portion of the McClelland Ferry Member of the Judith River Formation in the Kennedy Coulee region along the Canada-USA border. Dinosaurs from the same small geographic region, and from nearby, stratigraphically equivalent horizons of the lower Oldman Formation in Canada, reveal unprecedented ceratopsid richness, with four sympatric centrosaurine taxa and one chasmosaurine taxon. Phylogenetic results show that Lokiceratops, together with Albertaceratops and Medusaceratops, was part of a clade restricted to a small portion of northern Laramidia approximately 78 million years ago. This group, Albertaceratopsini, was one of multiple centrosaurine clades to undergo geographically restricted radiations, with Nasutuceratopsini restricted to the south and Centrosaurini and Pachyrostra restricted to the north. High regional endemism in centrosaurs is associated with, and may have been driven by, high speciation rates and diversity, with competition between dinosaurs limiting their geographic range. High speciation rates may in turn have been driven in part by sexual selection or latitudinally uneven climatic and floral gradients. The high endemism seen in centrosaurines and other dinosaurs implies that dinosaur diversity is underestimated and contrasts with the large geographic ranges seen in most extant mammalian megafauna. Detecting changes in surface air temperature in mid- and low-altitude mountainous regions is essential for a comprehensive understanding of warming trend with altitude. We use daily surface air temperature data from 64 meteorological stations in Wuyi Mountains and its adjacent regions to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns of temperature change. The results show that Wuyi Mountains have experienced significant warming from 1961 to 2018. The warming trend of the mean temperature is 0.20°C/decade, the maximum temperature is 0.17°C/decade, and the minimum temperature is 0.26°C/decade. In 1961–1990, more than 63% of the stations showed a decreasing trend in annual mean temperature, mainly because the maximum temperature decreased during this period. However, in 1971–2000, 1981–2010 and 1991–2018, the maximum, minimum and mean temperatures increased. The fastest increasing trend of mean temperature occurred in the southeastern coastal plains, the quickest increasing trend of maximum temperature occurred in the northwestern mountainous region, and the increase of minimum temperature occurred faster in the southeastern coastal and northwestern mountainous regions than that in the central area. Meanwhile, this study suggests that elevation does not affect warming in the Wuyi Mountains. Civil infrastructure systems have traditionally been designed assuming stationarity in precipitation. However, climate change is making this assumption invalid, affecting both existing infrastructure designed assuming stationarity and the design of new infrastructure. Although many studies have analyzed potential increases in precipitation due to climate change, fewer have attempted to translate these changes into the impact of stream discharge in a way that could be incorporated into infrastructure design. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential impact of climate change on both rainfall and peak discharge to aid in bridge and road infrastructure design. Results showed that the median increase in model-derived rainfall intensity across the selected rainfall stations in Virginia was 10%–30% for the midcentury (centered on 2045) and 10%–40% for the end of the century (centered on 2085), with the higher increase for the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario compared with the RCP4.5 scenario. A regression analysis was performed to relate peak discharge to watershed size for midcentury and end-of-century periods for the study area. In terms of peak discharge, smaller watersheds (<25 km2) had a percent increase for a given return period that was independent of the watershed size. Considering both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, for a 100-year return period, the increase was 39% and 49%, respectively, for the midcentury periods and 36% and 52%, respectively, for the end-of-century periods. For larger watersheds (>25 km2), the increase in peak discharge decreased as the watershed size increased, suggesting a dampening effect for larger watersheds in this coastal plain region of Virginia. For a watershed size of 1,700 km2 , the largest watershed included in the analysis, the percent increase in peak discharge for a 100-year return period was 14% and 39% during the midcentury, and 16% and 40% at the end of the century, for the two emission scenarios. These findings and the general methodology used in the study can aid transportation and water resources engineers in incorporating changing rainfall impacts into assessing current infrastructure and designing future infrastructure. They can also help to prioritize resources for more costly hydraulic analyses of potentially vulnerable infrastructure. The study aims to understand better how climate change will impact future precipitation and how this change in precipitation will impact peak discharge for watersheds of various sizes. Using Virginia as a study region, the median increase in precipitation intensity was found to be between 10% and 30% for the midcentury and 10%–40% for the end of the century across the state. Smaller watersheds (<25 km2) had an increase in peak discharge for a given return period that was independent of the watershed size. In comparison, larger watersheds (>25 km2) had an increase in peak discharge, but the percent increase in peak discharge decreased as the size of the watershed increased, especially for the RCP8.5 emission scenario. Regression equations were developed to provide a first approximation of peak discharge based on the watershed area, the emission scenario, and the return period to aid decision-makers in the region when including climate change impacts when assessing existing or designing new hydraulic structures. This study involves the granulometrics and lithological classification of the coastal plain sands and alluvium deposits within the Lagos environs, Nigeria, to decipher the lithofacies, sedimentary succession, and the variations imposed by the paleodepositional settings. Thirty (30) core samples were recovered for granulometric analysis and to construct the lithologic logs for the 10 boreholes, while grain size analysis was conducted on core samples from three of the boreholes (wells 3A, 11, and 27). The grain size distribution of the sediments was conducted using a mechanical sieve shaker to determine the provenance, transport medium, and environment of deposition. The weight percentage of each sieve retained was measured and used to compute the grain size parameters, including the mean (Mz), standard deviation (σ1), skewness (Sk1), and kurtosis (KG), using established formulas. The granulometric results of three boreholes show that the samples are fine-grained through medium- to coarse-grained sand particles. The sediments are moderately sorted (average of 1.01ɸ, 1.09ɸ, and 1.11ɸ). The sorting and skewness suggest fluvial (river) systems. The kurtosis results (average of 1.09ɸ, 1.15ɸ, and 1.11ɸ) show energy variation from low to high-energy environments across the three wells, with a predominance of low-energy environments. There were occurrences of peat and the prevalence of mud sand in tidal flats at Barrier Bar Lagoon coastal system of Badagry, white sand at deeper depth in the peninsular, and brownish sand at shallow depth, which indicate a regressive sequence with fresh water sand containing a high concentration of iron at shallow depth. The coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul state, in Brazil, is highly vulnerable to expected changes in sea level, while having an increasing population and consequently increasing water demands. Adequate management is essential to restrain contamination, depletion and salinization of the region's aquifers considering current and future challenges, but geologic knowledge is essential to guide groundwater sustainable practices. To contribute to this discussion, this work integrated existing geological data from the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul state to create a three-dimensional representation of the main hydrostratigraphical units of the region and its relation to the basement rocks, expanding the current knowledge of the coastal aquifer system. A review of existing data was carried out, consisting of 307 borehole logs from 13 municipalities inside the area of interest, as well as 19 vertical electrical soundings and 37 logs from oil and coal exploratory drillings, that resulted in 315 input points for the model. This work builds up on the conceptual model previously developed for the area, that defined four hydrostratigraphical units for the region, and was able to constrain the geometries of the main aquifers (unit 1 and 3) and aquitards (unit 2 and 4) and their relation to the basement rocks, showing them to be more heterogeneous in thicknesses and extent than previously thought. In addition, this work was able to model what could be a fifth hydrostratigraphical unit, that strongly differs from the other four and could be an indication of the alluvial fans previously described in the literature. Understanding and modeling the timing and magnitude of groundwater recharge from rainfall infiltration through vadose-zone percolation is important for many reasons but especially because the flux is being acted on by root-zone evapotranspiration (ET), and very little rainfall infiltration ever becomes water-table recharge. This study elaborates on the considerable time of the wetting front's arrival and ultimate bulk recharge of rainfall infiltration in the shallow water table with fine-sandy soil typical of coastal plain environments such as Florida. Calibrated Hydrus-1D modeling of Florida (Myakka) soil was evaluated at varying depths of the water table and hydraulic conductivities to bracket the timing of arrival of the wetting front and bulk fluxes. Useful normalized timing parameters are defined. In addition, this research further quantifies the concept of "wet equilibrium", and the considerable vadose-zone storage potential over and above the hydrostatic pressure equilibrium that must be overcome to achieve any significant water-table recharge in typical seasonal hydrologic timescales. The results indicate recharge timescales for water-table depths of 1 m are approximately 1 day but are considerably longer for 2 m (2 weeks), 3 m (1 month), and 4 m (50 days) conditions. Given that daily vadose-zone potential ET demand can exceed 0.5 cm/day in this environment, estimating recharge from rainfall infiltration is likely unreliable unless this timescale and the plant-root-zone uptake processes are properly modeled in surface-groundwater models.
