Purpose. This article is devoted to the consideration of amplification as an expressive means of stylistic syntax in the texts of the German Romantics of the 19th century. The author aims to describe various types of enumeration as the main means of amplification, taking into account the nature of the rhythmic expressiveness of a simple sentence and to reveal the entire stylistic potential of enumerative series. Methods or methodology of the work. The basis of the research is formed by the continuous sampling method in the selection of practical material as well as the method of descriptive linguo-stylistic analysis. Results. The analysis showed that amplification is a significant means of enhancing the emotional effectiveness of the language of romantic poets. By nominative and verbal enumeration, the effect of monotony, despondency, pressure, elevation, joy and hope is achieved. A special rhythmization of the sentence is created due to the enumerative intonation and rhythm. Along with a certain syntactic uniformity and consistency, there is a dismemberment of a homogeneous enumerative series, which creates a special kind of rhythmic expressiveness. Practical implications. The results of the research can be used at the lessons of Stylistics of the German Language, Text Interpretation, in seminars on the study of features of the language of German poetry.

For Philip Larkin, time initiates life with birth and advances it through growth ultimately to culminate in death, the end of life. Life turns a victim to the harsh reality of death, the deathprone reality to mark mortality. He, therefore, treats death as the climax and the curtain-fall of the drama of life. He looks at time as the only destroyer because it has eroding agents for corroding powers. Death marks mortality but not eternity of life, the spiritual aspect of life as in The Gita. The spiritualists are unlike him with his agnostic background. He treats time as a double-edged weapon for it turns our life mortal on one side and our life with all ambitions futile on the other. He, therefore, does not believe in life after death, the state of oblivion in life. Life is therefore a journey to flow from womb to tomb, the two oblivions of life. He further believes that death is “anaesthesia” because it does not let man know its silent occurrence. In time’s endless fleet, the evening, symbolic of old age, culminates in the night that symbolizes death. Time puts an end to life like winter to put an end to the cycle of seasons. Life, in the flux of time, is transient like the flower. Life is a hard journey through time as he finds the present hollow and dreary and the future bringing inevitable death. He grows conscious of the motionlessness, emptiness, nothingness of life as death puts an end to everything, causing pain and suffering. Life leads to the desperate cry in the horror of death. The fact of death constantly worries him “dreadfully.” His poetry reflects man’s struggle in evading the horrifying and terrifying fact of death. There is no poet to delineate death, the harsh reality, so vividly as Larkin. His poetry, therefore, presents the concept of death in kaleidoscopic details. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest disturbances increase the proportion of fast‐growing tree species compared to slow‐growing ones. To understand their relative capacity for carbon uptake and their vulnerability to climate change, and to represent those differences in Earth system models, it is necessary to characterise the physiological differences in their leaf‐level control of water use efficiency and carbon assimilation. We used wood density as a proxy for the fast‐slow growth spectrum and tested the assumption that trees with a low wood density (LWD) have a lower water‐use efficiency than trees with a high wood density (HWD). We selected 5 LWD tree species and 5 HWD tree species growing in the same location in an Amazonian tropical forest and measured in situ steady‐state gas exchange on top‐of‐canopy leaves with parallel sampling and measurement of leaf mass area and leaf nitrogen content. We found that LWD species invested more nitrogen in photosynthetic capacity than HWD species, had higher photosynthetic rates and higher stomatal conductance. However, contrary to expectations, we showed that the stomatal control of the balance between transpiration and carbon assimilation was similar in LWD and HWD species and that they had the same dark respiration rates. Summary Statement: We measured leaf gas exchange in the central Amazon to inform representation of tropical forest physiology in Earth system models. Background: Female Reddit users frequently discussed potential causes of orgasm difficulties and its implications on mental health and relationships. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of women discussing orgasms on the Internet site Reddit. We sought to qualitatively analyze the topics that arose in users' discussions to better understand the potential causes of orgasm difficulties and its implications on quality of life. Methods: Posts on the subreddit r/TwoXChromosomes containing the keywords "orgasm" and "climax" were included in the dataset. Posts and their associated comments were qualitatively analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Two independent researchers coded each thread to identify dominant themes and emergent concepts. Outcomes: The most frequently coded primary topics included: (1) orgasm (32.2% [n = 337]), (2) psychological (17.8% [n = 186]), (3) relationships (15.4% [n = 161]), and (4) treatment (10.7% [n = 112]). Results: Qualitative analysis of 107 threads and approximately 6300 comments resulted in 5 major categories: psychological aspect of orgasms, difficulty orgasming with partners, partners' responses to orgasmic dysfunction, types of orgasms, and treatments for orgasmic dysfunction. Preliminary themes included (1) the presence of an emotional component or history of trauma related to orgasmic difficulty, (2) difficulty orgasming with a partner regardless of ability to orgasm during masturbation and a variety of stimulation required to orgasm, (3) mixed partner responses to orgasmic dysfunction, (4) the definition of a normal orgasm, and (5) self-motivated treatment for orgasmic dysfunction, including clitoral stimulation devices and masturbation techniques. Notably, few posters discussed their orgasmic dysfunction with healthcare providers. Clinical Translation: The study reveals insights into the possible causes, psychosocial implications, and treatment of orgasm difficulties from a patient perspective, and can guide future research on female orgasms in a more precise, patient-oriented direction. Strengths and Limitations: The anonymous nature of the forum allowed for insight into sensitive topics related to female orgasms and sexual trauma. Limitations include the demographic distribution of Reddit users, which was primarily younger women in their 20s and 30s, which restricts generalizability. Conclusion: Reddit provides a medium for individuals with orgasm difficulties to discuss their experiences. Posts addressed users' inability to orgasm, their mental health and relationships, the stimulation required for orgasm, and treatments for orgasmic dysfunction. Interestingly, very few posts discussed healthcare, potentially suggesting that women do not classify their orgasmic dysfunction as a health issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zonal concept is a traditional approach in land assessment. Although its principles have been known for over a hundred years, they have not yet been thoroughly evaluated using modern analytical approaches. Assessing the empirically established parameters for characterising a zonal site, establishing threshold values of significant environmental factors, along with assessing the applicability of the zonal concept, were the goals of this study. The data analysed were obtained from the robust and objective Czech National Forest Inventory database. Regression, indirect ordination, hierarchical clustering and spatial analyses of geo-information systems were used. The study revealed seven crucial environmental factors: Slope, Slope Height, Terrain Surface Texture, Negative Openness, Multi-Resolution Index of Valley Bottom Flatness, Soil Type and Soil Subtype. A graphical model of zonal/azonal sites was constructed based on calculated threshold values of the factors. This methodic approach introduces significant geomorphological information that are otherwise problematically detectable in field mapping. We suggest it is possible to use the zonal concept as a base layer for general landscape assessment. Zonal site classification can become a part of a precise land management practice, consisting of valuable empiricism of traditional landscape ecological classifications enriched by modelling in disturbance ecology and prediction of climate change effects.

My thesis discusses a very important, simple but powerful expression tool, it is repetition, used by Dino Buzzati in his novel Un Amore. It is a completely extravagant work, compared to the usual production of the writer. Through the technique of the inner monologue, the conflicts of the mature man attracted by youth are analyzed, but also those of the educated bourgeois taken by what is popular.At First, in the introduction i briefly present the theme of the novel and the the writer's style. Then i study two main types of repetition: the repetition “in contact” and the repetition “at a distance”; besides long repetitions or echoes as Buzzati calls them.In addition, i treat the repetitions in the form of progression which in turn are distinguished in semantic progression that depends on the choice of terms, anaphoric, synonymic, narrative and finally that in the form of adjectival series. The examples cited in the thesis explain the flexibility and simplicity of repetition, precisely for which Buzzati prefers this expression tool.

The interaction of literary and linguistic approaches in the process of analyzing a literary text makes it possible to penetrate into the depth of the artistic work. This is the relevance of the study. The authors conducted a philological analysis of the ethical S. Zweig’s short story “The Governess” using these approaches. The following means were identified to characterize the psychological tension of the characters: climax and introspection. The analysis of linguistic-stylistic means in the description of the presented images of characters and their interactions is carried out. The analysis revealed the following tropes: direct nominations amplified by the epithets; repetitions of verbs and nouns; artistic comparisons; metaphors; metonymies; paraphrases; hyperboles; personifications; internal parallelisms; figures of “default”; internal monologues; rhetorical questions and exclamations. Three stages of dynamization of the emotional experiences of the main characters are identified with the help of linguistic-stylistic means: 1) slight suspicion, vague contradiction, caution; 2) distrust, suspicion, nervousness, agitation; 3) open protest, experience, grief, despair, disappointment, tears, silence, darkness. The conclusion states that S. Zweig made the best presentation of linguistic and stylistic means to characterize the main characters and the growth of their emotional tension.

An important role in the expression of Sydor Vorobkevich’s poetic language is played by syntactic means. Goal. To investigate the functioning of poetic syntax in the poetic works of Sydor Vorobkevich of the third period of creativity (1876-1903). Research methods are predetermined by the purpose and tasks of the work, the object of research and are complex. The hermeneutic method and the method of slow reading (the method of receptive poetics) were practiced, aimed to reveal S. Vorobkevych artistic means, interpret his works. Formal method based on the use of statistics, quantitative processing of the material, aimed to analyze the aspects of versification, has been applied. Particular attention should be paid to the,, frequency coefficient» principle (FC), which is the ratio of the poetic element to the number of lines and was practiced in the works of V. Pivtorak, O. Romanytsya and R. Pazyuk. This approach made it possible to obtain objective conclusions regarding the various components of poetry of the writer. Scientifi c novelty. For the first time in Ukrainian literary studies, a comprehensive study of the poetics of S. Vorobkevych’s poetic works was carried out; they are analyzed in terms of poetic syntax. Conclusions. Syntactic means play an important role in understanding of the poetic language of the artist. Repetitions, among which the anaphores dominate are the ingredients of poetic syntax. Mostly, its use falls on the third period of creativity of the poet (FC – 0,04). Since this period is the most rich in creativity achievements, we will show the dynamics of several more figures: the refrain (I period – 0.002, ІІ – 0.001, ІІІ – 0.002), the take-up (І period – 0.002, ІІ – 0.008, ІІІ – 0.008), condilk (І period – 0,005, ІІ – 0,005, ІІІ – 0,01). The selection of stylistic figures in S. Vorobkevyh works is quite rich. In rhymed poetry, Rhetorical questions, inversion, antithesis, enzhambeman, ellipsis, figurative parallelism, anadiplosis, asiadeton, polysindecton, pleonamism, anastrophe, likasaprene, polyptot, imprecation, climax, symposium etc. were practiced by Bykovynian poet [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar and wind power are called to play a main role in the transition toward decarbonized electricity systems. However, their integration in the energy mix is highly compromised due to the intermittency of their production caused by weather and climate variability. To face the challenge, here we present research about actionable strategies for wind and solar photovoltaic facilities deployment that exploit their complementarity in order to minimize the volatility of their combined production while guaranteeing a certain supply. The developed methodology has been implemented in an open‐access step‐wise model called CLIMAX. It first identifies regions with homogeneous temporal variability of the resources, and then determines the optimal shares of each technology over such regions. In the simplistic application performed here, we customize the model to narrow the monthly deviations of the total wind‐plus‐solar electricity production from a given curve (here, the mean annual cycle of the total production) across five European domains. For the current shares of both technologies, the results show that an optimal siting of the power units would reduce the standard deviation of the monthly anomalies of the total wind‐plus‐solar power generation by up to 20% without loss in the mean capacity factor as compared to a baseline scenario with an evenly spatial distribution of the installations. This result further improves (up to 60% in specific regions) if the total shares of each technology are also optimized, thus encouraging the use of CLIMAX for practical guidance of next‐generation renewable energy scenarios. ABSTRACT Blueberry farming can be considered an excellent alternative to diversify the family income. In addition, the fruits have several health benefits thanks to the presence of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins, however blueberries chemical composition is affected by edaphoclimatic conditions and bud position within the shoot. Therefore, the objective of the study was to evaluate the influence of the bud position on the total phenolic content, anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity, and other quality parameters of blueberry fruits of three cultivars (Climax, Bluegem, and Powderblue) grown in the mesoregion of Pelotas, Brazil. Fruits of these cultivars were harvested from three shoot position. The fruits were evaluated for their total soluble solids content, pH, total titratable acidity, total soluble solids/total titratable acidity ratio, fruit color, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and antioxidant potential against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl radical. The bud position in the shoots influenced the physicochemical parameters of the blueberry fruits of all cultivars. Fruits harvested from apical levels had higher content of soluble solids, pH, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and antioxidant potential, demonstrating that studies aiming at evaluating fruits from different shoot levels are important, as they directly impact the quality of the fruits as well as their biological potentials.

Th e concept of zonality (zonal concept) or azonality of vegetation has been well known for a long time all over the world. In the Czech Republic (CZ), this topic is usually presented in a context of (forest or forest site) ecological classification systems, called informally “forest typology” or officially “the Czech Forest Ecosystem Classification”. Expert-based vegetation zonality has not been tested so far. Th ere is even no relevant ecologically-based review of the concept and linked ecological principles behind classification systems. Th e latest modest note dealing with the zonal concept has been published along with the Notice 298/2018 of Forest Law (Typology table). Th is review summarizes (i) brief history on the zonal concept, (ii) definition of zonal and azonal vegetation, and description of parameters of a zonal site, (iii) approaches of (forest) classification systems around the world, and (iv) main principles of the Czech Forest Ecosystem Classification. Results of this review should be used as a theoretical basis for a next rigorous analysis of the concept and system units, based on data, sampled during the second cycle of the National Forest Inventory 2011–2015. CLIMAX (Climate Services Through Knowledge Co-Production: A Euro-South American Initiative For Strengthening Societal Adaptation Response to Extreme Events) was an international project funded by FAPESP-Belmont forum developed during the 2016–2021 period. Germany, France, Netherlands, Argentina/France and Brazil were the international partners who worked in common objectives and tasks. The project was composed of four main Work Packages (WP), which interacted to achieve the final goal of developing potential applications to climate services. Here, some of the researches and results conducted by the team in Brazil, aiming at the application by climate services in several sectors, mainly in the energy sector are presented, some including international partners collaborations. The WP0—Co-design and Co-Production of Knowledge, was developed in collaboration with the energy sector, the National Operator of Electric System (ONS). Climate research activities were conducted through interactions between climate researchers, energy sector personnel and social scientists, focusing on applications. WP1—Physical processes explaining climate variability in South America, aimed to study the remote and regional features associated with precipitation extremes over South America, with emphasis on regions where the main hydrographic basins are located. WP2—Predictability and Prediction tools developed several studies, mainly at the sub-seasonal timescale, which was a timescale identified to be useful for ONS. WP3—Social processes explaining climate information appropriation was composed of social scientists and had the mission of producing a characterization of the electric sector. Here, some of the WP1 and WP2 results are summarized, illustrating the potential applications. WP0 and WP3 results are presented in other papers.

Soil in high latitude and altitude cold regions contains over half of soil organic carbon (SOC) globally, so the decomposition of these SOCs under climate warming could release huge amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, amplifying climate warming. However, it is still unclear how the SOC storages will change when the ecosystem reaches the final and stable stage (i.e., the climax) under long-term warming. This is mainly because the turnover times of SOC in cold regions exceeds hundreds or even thousands of years, much longer than the periods of simulated warming experiments. Herein we used natural geothermal warming gradients in a Tibetan alpine grassland to determine SOC changes and underlying plant and microbial mechanisms at the potential climax. SOC concentrations were significantly decreased by 21.4%–30.6% under high-level soil warming (+4∼+6 °C), but remained unchanged under low-level soil warming (+2 °C). The losses of SOC were primarily from mineral-associated organic carbon, rather than unprotected particulate organic carbon. The shifts of microbial communities and associated decline of microbial carbon use efficiency, rather than plant-driven carbon fluxes, substantially contributed to the SOC changes. This observed SOC losses at the climax of alpine grassland by high-level warming provide strong empirical support for the positive soil carbon-climate feedback in cold regions, which could not be concluded from short-term experiments or only based on ecosystem carbon fluxes alone. The divergent responses of SOC to different degrees of warming suggest that models must account for these heterogeneous carbon dynamics for projecting future climate warming scenarios. • High-level rather than low-level warming led to soil carbon loss at the potential climax. • Soil carbon loss by warming was primarily from mineral-associated organic carbon. • The decrease of microbial carbon use efficiency contributed to soil carbon loss. This article discusses the functions of continuous processes in contemporary electronic dance music (EDM), providing an analytical framework for discussing their structural and aesthetic roles in this repertoire. Continuous processes are musical gestures with continuous changes to musical parameters, rather than discrete, "step-by-step" ones. Examples include pitch slides (glissandos), crescendos, fade ins, accelerandos, and filter sweeps. Continuous processes in this repertoire are created with "continuous controllers" such as sliders and knobs, or are programmed into tracks with "automation curves." Functionally, continuous processes often provide sonic instructions for dancers. They can be used by creators at strategic times to provide ornamentation, orientation (often accompanied by intensification or de-intensification), or disorientation (usually in breakdown sections). This article adds to existing analytical scholarship by drawing attention to the many roles of continuous processes in EDM, and showing how they contribute to the emotional waves experienced when listening to this music. This essay considers Shakespeare through Aristotelianism and Thomism to explore Hamlet as a meditation on tyranny. Based on the classical model of tragedy as presented by Aristotle in his Poetics and further informed by his Ethics and Politics , the essay identifies the climax of the play in order to determine the playwright's argument about what should have happened instead of what did—namely, the hero should have removed the tyrant Claudius when given the opportunity at Act 3, Scene 3. Shakespeare is deliberately and successfully upending the Aristotelian model, while yet fulfilling its definitions and expectations. The claim is further supported by Aquinas's six conditions for the right use of anger and vengeance as found in his Summa Theologica. Hamlet's choice not to act is highly significant—and ironically Shakespearean. The play's treatment of tyranny may have been a call to action for Shakespeare's contemporary audience. Many women equate the word menopause primarily with decline of life. On the one hand, the aesthetic component of the delicate age makes negative contributions to the dissatisfaction with this state; on the other hand, the growing pool of somatic health problems does not improve the quality of life in the best way. The woman’s path of life is unique and consists of chapters of beginnings and endings, losses and gains. A person, who develops harmoniously and consistently, reaches their creative climax by the age of 50. This is the age, when a person is able to plunge into their inner world more deeply, and the perception of what is happening in the outer world weakens. Mental maturity, accumulated experience, well established social connections allow a person to feel confidently in everyday reality. However, the physiological changes associated with menopause and the reproductive function failure affect the personal history of each of the fair sex in one way or another. Not a simple, but at the same time a very significant period begins after 50 years, when it is necessary to conquer new peaks and overcome new distances. Only a thoughtful and successful start of menopause can provide a sense of satisfaction and a cloudless horizon in physical well-being.

Effects produced by music and sex are similar insofar as they make us feel the present moment intensely (Frith 1996): this is probably the reason why our discourses frequently borrow vocabulary from the sexual lexical field when we want to name instants where our musical perception is most stimulated. The word “climax” is a transparent example, since it can literally refer to an orgasm, but is also used to talk about the intensity peak of a piece of music. This metaphor comes with unfortunate restrictions, in this case, the viewing of a climax as the equivalent of one standardized representation of male pleasure – the single orgasm. Yet, to see a musical climax as an intensity peak preceded by a crescendo and followed by an immediate fallout has its limits. It is generally relevant in tonal, classical music, but this outline loses its accuracy when it comes to other genre families, like rock music, which progresses step by step, and does not necessarily include one precise identifiable peak. This article focuses on a post-rock corpus and shows the importance of a more flexible use of the notion of climax in musicology. The studied climaxes, shaped as long sections instead of one-time peaks, illustrate how musical analysis can benefit from alternative templates, namely those of multiple and sustained orgasms. Using these two models as formal references, and relying on Brad Osborn’s work (2013), which evidenced the role of terminal climactic sections in recent rock music, this paper stresses the internal crescendos of the climactic sections often – but not exclusively – heard in post-rock. Their form, instrumentation, harmonic strategies, use of technology and performance highlight the main characteristics of these expanded climaxes: an extended temporality, replicability and reduced teleology.

Portrayals of sexualized narratives are rife in ethnographic accounts of Electronic Dance Music (EDM), where the visceral musical and haptic experiences of dancing to club music are intertwined in a tantalizing symbiosis. This is music that is habitually understood through erotic semiosis: protracted build ups of stimulation and intensity, layer upon layer of musical repetition being added in service of arousal, and a teasing denial of harmonic and sonic resolution are expanded and amplified, until there is a final fulfilment granted by the DJ at the moment of the “drop”. Bringing together musicological discussions of climax with socio-psychological and neurological research on the orgasm, this article explores the manifold ways in which technologies of arousal in dance music mediate the sexual space of the dancefloor and consider how metaphors of pleasure and fulfilment are actualised in EDM in ways which destabilise the prevalent body of heteronormative, male-focussed narratives around stimulation and arousal.

In order to fully comprehend what an exercise is according to Francis Ponge, there may be no better way than to open the Littré. There, one will discover that even though “exercise” is indeed a synonym for “training”, “to exercise” something is “to verify that it functions”. Émile Littré especially insists on the fact that in etymological terms the verb “exercise” comes from Latin ex arcere, a phrase itself meaning “to force out of”, “to deliver”. In this article, we shall put to the test those (complementary) definitions of the notion of exercise in a few of Francis Ponge’s writings. We particularly aim to demonstrate that this author, who sometimes pretends to be in a classroom (in which he would be both a teacher and a pupil), considers joy as the ultimate goal of his work: the moment of “deliverance” – that of “successful” wording - is the moment of climax.

Peripétia and anagnorisis are two key concepts in Aristotle Poetics. By means of this study, we will demonstrate that they are also basic concepts for narrative film because its relevance is present in the structure of the stories in the big screen. Through the creation of a specific methodological tool that addresses the internal organization of the screenplay, we will place the peripétia and anagnorisis within this structure in several films over several decades in the Cinema History.

This article examines the process of dynamic building and subsiding in verismo opera. Departing from groundswell originally drawn from Julian Budden's analysis of bel canto opera, I propose a new dynamic paradigm, the climax archetype--consisting of initiation, intensification, highpoint, and abatement--and its operational parameters. To appropriately respond to diverse dynamic structures, variants of climax archetype--climax-stage fusion, high region, highpoint frustration, highpoint absence, climax succession, and climax nesting--are also suggested. These analytical paradigms are applied to works by Puccini, Giordano, Mascagni, and Zandonai, to clarify the mechanism of dynamic rise and fall in conjunction with the dramatic action. This study reported rhetorical style used in a news article to broadcast in TV RI of Kaltim This Week, specifying three kinds of styles: climax, cause, and effect. This study used content analysis, identifying 10 articles available in the broadcast services. The study revealed that three parts of rhetorical organization of news writing for broadcasting: climax part, cause part, and effect part were present in the news articles of Kaltim This Week. Climax parts appeared at the beginning of the writing. Irrelevant climax part happened as the editor put his/her subjective conclusion toward the story. The cause parts giving reasons and supporting facts were found in the middle of news articles. The absence of cause part was because the editor explained detailed information so he/she became unfocused to the reason. The effect parts were well presented in the news articles.

Great scientific and practical interest in the approach to therapy and prevention of isolated urogenital disorders caused by estrogen deficiency. Drug of choice for treating and preventing urogenital disorders is estrogenobuslovlennyh Ovestin containing estriol in sufficient therapeutic dosage. After the treatment course is shown the transition to supportive / preventive dose to prevent the resumption of symptoms. Climacteric syndrome with increasing life expectancy and the proportion of elderly in the population is a growing problem in women's health. Therapeutic and prophylactic approaches to urogenital disorders which were caused by estrogens deficit are present great interest. Ovestin containing estriol in sufficient therapeutic dosage is drug of choice for therapy and prevention of estrogen-related urogenital disorders. After the treatment course with Ovestin transition on supportive/ prophylactic dose is recommended for prevention of renewal of UGD symptoms.

A forecast for the development of old-growth nemoral herb broad-leaved forest with domination of Quercus robur and Tilia cordata in the Inselsky forest range (the Penza region) is given in the article. The community belongs to the association Mercurialo perrenis-Quercetum roboris Bulokhov et Solomeshch 2003 according the Braun-Blanquet floristic classification. Long-term monitoring observations (28 years) on a permanent sample plot were the basis of the forecasts. The ontogenetic state of tree species coenopopulations was analyzed and maps were produced for placing biogroups of trees of different age. The study showed that the existing horizontal structure (mosaic) of the studied community ensures the reliable development of only shade-tolerant species (Acer platanoides, Tilia cordata, Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabra). The available light regime is not sufficient for development of light-demanding species (Quercus robur, Populus tremula). The small number of oak individuals in the population and the death of its undergrowth make the position of Quercus robur very vulnerable in modern communities. The incompleteness of tree species composition and the inability to restore it with the existing structure of the community make it possible to characterize the broad-leaved forest as a quasi-climax. The transformation of this forest into the climax is impossible without human intervention. Reducing size of mosaic prevents the formation of uneven-aged populations of all potential tree species in the future.

Seed germination traits of seasonal rainforest species differ from permanently moist evergreen rainforest species due to the prolonged seasonal drought. We investigated whether seed germination traits used to categorise evergreen rainforest species into pioneer and climax guilds were applicable to seasonal rainforest species. Seed dormancy, light requirements for germination and seed storage types of five climax and thirteen pioneer species of a coastal vine thicket were studied. Results were compared with published studies of evergreen rainforest species. Evergreen rainforest pioneer species are typically dormant, require light to germinate and tolerate desiccation, whereas climax species are typically non-dormant, tolerate shade during germination and are sensitive to desiccation. In seasonal rainforest we found that a high proportion of pioneer species had seeds that were non-dormant (62%), and a high proportion of pioneer species germinated equally well in light and dark conditions. In seasonal rainforest, we found that the majority of climax species had desiccation tolerant seeds, whereas in evergreen rainforest the proportion of climax species producing desiccation sensitive seeds is equal to or greater than the proportion of species with desiccation tolerant seeds. In seasonal rainforest species physical, physiological and epicotyl dormancy types were found. Generally, for seasonal rainforest species, the prevalent form of dormancy in pioneer species was physical dormancy whereas physiological dormancy was most common in evergreen rainforest pioneer species with dormancy. Our results suggest that the contrasting seed biology traits that typically apply to pioneer and climax species of evergreen rainforest species don't typically apply to seasonal rainforest species. Nettle grey alder forests are a dominant forest type on lowland swamps in the Bryansk Polesie. They are formed as a result of repeated cuttings in the place of tall herb spruce forests. Tall herb spruce forests are very rare communities in the vegetation cover in this area due to clear cutting, melioration and peat extraction. An assessment of the succession status of tall herb spruce forests and nettle grey alder forests was carried out in this paper. The criteria of climax state and succession state of communities, developed for Eastern European forests, were used. These criteria are based on the degree of intensity of the following signs in the community: 1) the completeness of species composition of tree synusia; 2) the ontogenetic structure of tree species cenopopulation; 3) the gap-mosaic stand structure; 4) the diversity of microsites in soil cover; 5) the completeness of species composition and ecological-coenotic diversity of vascular species. We showed that tall herb spruce forest, as opposed to black alder forest, is close to communities of the climax type. This is evidenced by the following features of cenosis: firstly, all tree species in the area that covers the Bryansk Polesie and that are able to grow on lowland swamps are represented in the spruce forest (Alnus glutinosa, Betula pubescens, Fraxinus excelsior, Padus avium, Picea abies, Salix pentandra, Sorbus aucuparia, Ulmus glabra). Secondly, a steady turnover of generations is carried out in the cenopopulations of main edificators (Picea abies and Alnus glutinosa). This is evidenced by the complete and left-sided structure of their ontogenetic spectrum. Thirdly, a system of asynchronously developing gaps (parcels), which are formed on the site of old tree falls, is formed in the community. This ensures the continuous renewal of spruce and alder populations and creates conditions for the regeneration of other tree species. Fourthly, the structure of biogenic microsites has been formed in the soil cover: fallen logs, treefall pits and mounds, sedge tussocks, tree hummocks and substrate composed of the surface tree roots. These microsites determine the stable existence of species of contrasting ecological-cenotic species groups (from water-marsh and nitrophilous groups to wet-meadow, nemoral and boreal groups) in the community. Finally, thanks to the well-developed treefall gap structure and system of microsites, the parameters of the species and ecology-cenotic diversity of tall herb spruce forests are maximal among all forest types in the lowland swamp of the Bryansk Polesie. All this suggests that tall herb spruce forests are the climax (final) stage in the development of black alder forests in lowland swamps within the areas of Picea abies and Alnus glutinosa. We showed that the derivative nettle black alder forest, in contrast to the tall herb spruce forest, is in the first stages of restoration. This is indicated by the following signs: firstly, in the black alder forests, not all tree species that can grow on the lowland swamps of the Bryansk Polesie are present. This is often due to the fact that seed sources (generative trees) are absent in the immediate surroundings. Secondly, there is no normal turnover of generations in the cenopopulations of all tree species. Thirdly, a treefall gap structure (parcel mosaic) is not formed in the communities, which is necessary for the stable turnover of generations in tree populations. Fourthly, the system of biogenic microsite is not developed in the soil cover. Because of this, the composition of the ground cover is limited mainly by plant species of the water-marsh and the nitrophilous groups that are tolerant to the swampy substrate. Fifthly, black alder is distinguished by relatively low indicators of species richness and ecological-coenotic diversity. This is due to the undeveloped mosaic of parcels and microsites. It should be emphasised that the low age of felling (60–70 years) is the main reason for the «eternal» succession youth of black alder forests. Felling does not allow the community to reach the final stages of succession with the maximum structural, species and ecological-cenotic diversity.
