Abstract

This essay examines the use of borrowed material in the song output of three American composers, William Bolcom, Tom Cipullo and Benjamin C. Moore. Topics cited include a closer examination of their borrowings, which revealed that no single technique exists, a brief history of musical borrowing and the approach to using borrowed material used by Charles Ives, the first American composer known for borrowing.
