In this research we address the ongoing debate about the existence of the glass‐cliff phenomenon by investigating boundary conditions and mechanisms influencing its persistence and decline. Drawing on signalling theory, we hypothesize that the glass‐cliff's presence fluctuates with the clarity of signals associated with appointing women board members at various stages of quota policy implementation. In Study 1, we analyzed a dataset of 258 board appointments in German‐listed companies from 2003 to 2020. We found that women executives were more likely to be appointed following periods of declining performance during Stage 1 (pre‐quota announcement) and Stage 3 (post‐quota enforcement), but not in Stage 2 (post‐announcement, pre‐enforcement). In Study 2, an experiment with 476 respondents, we tested for changes in signal clarity as an underlying mechanism. Results indicate that signal clarity associated with appointing women following performance decline is influenced by quota policies. Signal clarity was highest during stages 1 and 3, but diminished in Stage 2. These findings support the signalling explanation for the glass‐cliff, highlighting that its occurrence is influenced by country‐level policies and emphasizing that the symbolic value of appointing women to board positions as indicators of change depends on the clarity of these signals. Paneas, situated at the foot of mount Hermon, is where the Hermon River emerges from a spring at the foot of a cliff with a natural cave. In the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the cave and nearby terrace served mainly for the cult of Pan. Herod the Great built in Paneas a temple to Augustus, and his son erected there his capital, Caesarea Philippi. A salvage excavation was recently conducted in front of the cave in the area that formerly was identified as Herod's Augusteum. The new excavations have proven that during the Roman period, the place was unroofed and open to the cave, which was full of water. The water flowed out through a large aqueduct, water installations were constructed in the courtyard, and niches flanked on the west and east. The complex is dated to the last third of the 1st century c.e. and is attributed to Agrippa II, who built there a nymphaeum-triclinium facing a grotto in Italian style. Afterward, the courtyard was used as a cult place to Pan, and hydromantic rituals were performed in the cave. Notch development at the base of sea cliffs is an important control on cliff recession rates, but a detailed mechanistic understanding of notch formation by swash abrasion is lacking. We conducted physical experiments, using homogeneous erodible rock simulants, to study notch‐forming mechanisms under periodic sediment‐laden bore impacts. Our findings reveal shifts in the temporal dynamics of notch development. Initially, swash uprush and vortex formation contribute to a positive feedback loop that creates a shallow and wide notch. Subsequently, upward erosion ceases, and notch backwear and downwear are dominated by the vortex. Eventually, sediment deposition armors the notch floor; this negative feedback loop reduces erosion. The sediment size determines the amount of erosion, with a range of grain sizes generating maximum erosion. This indicates a dependence on the momentum of the sediment particles entrained within the bore. This research reveals fundamental notch formation mechanisms driven by swash abrasion. Plain Language Summary: When waves attack a rock cliff, they gradually undercut the cliff and remove materials, forming a wave‐cut notch. Studying how notches form and develop in natural settings takes a very long time, so we created a weaker cliff in the laboratory using easily eroded foam. The cliff was exposed to repeated impacts from bores carrying sediment, representing the impact of broken waves. Notch formation is observed over a few hundred hours. Initially, the notch is wide and shallow. As it grows, abrasive sediment cannot be propelled into the roof, stopping the upward expansion of the notch, and sediment piles up at the bottom, blocking further downward erosion. The notch continues to deepen, but at a decreasing rate. The size of the beach sand or gravel has an important influence on the erosion rate. If the sediments are too large or too small, little erosion occurs, whereas sediments of a certain size can cause rapid erosion. This is because waves need to be able to entrain sediment and hurl it with sufficient force against the cliff to cause erosion. We use direct numerical simulation to investigate the scalar gradient skewness downstream of a square grid element. The passive scalar is generated by applying a constant heat flux on the grid element. We primarily focus on the far-downstream grid-element centerline, where the scalar turbulence is homogeneous, and there are no mean velocity or scalar gradients. In this region, some discrepancy exists in the literature concerning the isotropy of the scalar. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that measures scalar gradients in all three directions. We detect nonzero skewness for the lateral scalar gradients, while in the streamwise direction, the skewness is zero. We show, through statistical analysis, that the nonzero values are solely due to steep gradients called cliffs. The cliffs originate from the bars of the grid-element that generate sharp mean scalar gradients along the lateral directions in the near wake. These mean gradients decay as the flow develops downstream, but the convected cliffs remember the generating upstream conditions and, in particular, the direction of the mean scalar gradient. Due to this memory effect, the cliffs align preferentially along a specific direction despite the absence of a local mean scalar gradient, thus making the homogeneous scalar field anisotropic. We also report some hitherto undocumented properties of cliffs and ramps through conditional statistical analysis. Finally, we corroborate our conclusions with two additional simulations, one involving grid-element turbulence in the presence of a transverse mean scalar gradient and the other scalar turbulence due to a heated cylinder. In many Arctic regions, marine coastlines change rapidly in our currently warming climate. In contrast, coastal rock cliffs on Svalbard are considered to be relatively stable. Long-term trends of coastal-retreat rates for rock cliffs on Svalbard remain unknown, but quantifying them could improve our understanding of coastal dynamics in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. This study presents coastal-retreat rates for rock cliffs along several kilometres of Brøggerhalvøya, Svalbard. The analysis relies on high-resolution orthoimages from 1970, 1990, 2010, and 2021. The data are corroborated by high-precision dGNSS (differential Global Navigation Satellite System) measurements obtained along selected segments of the coastline. Our analysis reveals statistically significant acceleration in coastal-retreat rates across Brøggerhalvøya between 2010 and 2021. The northeast-facing coastline features fairly stable conditions, with retreat rates of 0.04 ± 0.06 ma-1 (1970–1990; calculated retreat rate ± the corresponding measurement uncertainty), 0.04 ± 0.04 ma-1 (1990–2010), and 0.06 ± 0.08 ma-1 (2010–2021). Along the southwest-facing coastline, higher retreat rates of 0.26 ± 0.06 ma-1 (1970–1990), 0.24 ± 0.04 ma-1 (1990–2010), and 0.30 ± 0.08 ma-1 (2010–2021) were calculated. For the most recent decade, this corresponds to an increase of 50 % for the northeast-facing coastline and an increase of 25 % for the southwest-facing coastline. Furthermore, for the northeast-facing coastline, the proportion of the coastline affected by erosion increased from 47 % (1970–1990) to 65 % (2010–2021), while it stayed consistently above 90 % for the southwest-facing coastline. This study identifies the reasons for geodynamics variability of the coastal system within two cliff-shore sections of the southern Baltic Sea (SBS). The comparative analysis included distinct moraines and their foregrounds near the open sea (S1) and within the Gulf of Gdańsk (S2). Short-term trends indicate a direct link between landslide occurrence and increased cliff retreat. Long-term (total) values were obtained by developing the 4F MODEL for large-scale applications, based on the analysis of remote sensing and hydroacoustic data (to determine the extent of shore platforms), the modelling of higher-order polynomial functions describing their extent, followed by the integral calculus of the indicated functions within the open-source Desmos environment. The retreat dynamics for individual landslides (S1) was an order of magnitude higher (m/yr) than the average for the whole cliff section (0.17 ± 0.008 m/yr), which correlates well with medium- and long-term development tendencies and recession dynamics, revealed by the numerical modelling method, since approximately 8 ka b2k, years before 2000 CE (at S1 = 0.17 ± 0.020 m/yr, at S2 = 0.11 ± 0.005 m/yr). While the approach described in this paper can reveal, project, and simulate the dynamics of past and future trends within other cliffed coasts shaped in tideless conditions, it also proves stable moraine erosional responses to sea-level rise since the Mid-Holocene. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the impact of Covid-19 on Breksi Cliff Tourism. Breksi Cliff Tourism is managed by a Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) in Sambirejo Village, Prambanan District and Breksi Cliff Manager Lowo Ijo is a work unit of BUMDes. This study uses the perspective of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), namely from a financial perspective, customer perspective, internal business process perspective, learning and growth perspective. to see the impact of Breksi Cliff Tourism. The impact on the internal organization itself as well as the economic impact on the surrounding community which has become a source of income. This study uses qualitative research methods in order to dig up more information from sources about the impact of Covid-19. The informants in this study are Breksi Cliff Tourism Managers, employees of Breksi Cliff Tourism Managers, non-employee workers and the community around Breksi Cliff Tourism. In the first half of the seventh century CE, clusters of Buddhist cliff sculptures were carved into cliffs and boulders in Guangyuan, Mianyang, Bazhong, and other locations nestled in the northern Sichuan Basin. They mark the start of large-scale Buddhist grotto construction in Sichuan, significantly impacting the establishment of regional grotto traditions in southwestern China. Through analysis of site forms, statue types, and devotional inscriptions, this article argues that these Buddhist cliff sculptures represent a reintegration of divergent Buddhist practices and artistic conventions that emerged during the Southern and Northern Dynasties in northern and southern China. While their niche-based site structure and collective sponsorship through the yiyi association can be traced back to northern China in the prior two centuries, the sculptural style primarily reflects a regional tradition exemplified by the free-standing statues unearthed in Chengdu, central Sichuan in the Southern Dynasties. The construction of these sites, catalyzed by the influx of northern officials and monks into Sichuan toward the end of the Sui and the early Tang, provides valuable material for exploring the social integration of northern and southern China, as well as the religious dynamics between Buddhism and Daoism in northern Sichuan. The state of Hawaii is a series of mountainous islands with a topography that is much more complex than the simple isolated hills and escarpments included in ASCE standard ASCE/SEI 7-22 (Minimum design loads and associated criteria for buildings and other structures, ASCE 7). Hawaii state and county building codes have incorporated topographic wind speed mapping since 2007. In 2010, ASCE 7-10 recognized Hawaii as a special wind region. The design wind speed maps, Kzt maps, and site-specific directionality factors as adopted in Hawaii's state building codes constituted the "special Kzt topographic effect adjustments" of the authority having jurisdiction that were referenced in ASCE 7-10. In ASCE 7-16 and ASCE 7-22, microzoned wind speed maps for Hawaii, including the effect of topography and directionality, were incorporated for strength design return periods. This paper provides information on the development of an improved generation of higher-resolution basic design wind speed maps for the state of Hawaii, including better accuracy of topographic and directionality effects. Aim: Coralligenous reefs are the main marine bioconstructions in terms of spatial distribution within the Mediterranean basin. Two distinct reef morphologies can be distinguished based on the surface and topographical features of the seafloor: cliffs developing vertical slopes and banks found on gently steep or horizontal bottoms. Despite their importance for monitoring and conservation efforts, observations regarding the variability of biogeographical patterns are scarce. Here, we aimed to assess the differences in the composition and structure of these cliffs across ecoregions and estimate the relative role of abiotic environmental features, geographic location, and connectivity in shaping diversity patterns. Location: The study was carried out in the Central‐Western Mediterranean Sea. Samples were collected at 65 sites across the Algero‐Provençal Basin, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Methods: We assessed the composition and structure of coralligenous cliffs through photographic samplings collected by scuba divers. Patterns in α‐ and β‐diversity were associated with 9 abiotic environmental variables, latitudinal and longitudinal gradients, and connectivity measures using Generalized Additive (GAM) and Conditional Autoregressive (CAR) models. Results: Coralligenous cliffs were primarily composed of algae and displayed a high degree of variability. The Partition Around Medoids (PAM) clustering method successfully delineated seven distinct clusters with a non‐uniform distribution within the studied ecoregions. The α‐diversity increased in eastern and northern sites and with phosphate concentration, while decreased with temperature, chlorophyll and nitrates concentration. β‐diversity at the site level increased with temperature, while it was negatively affected by northward current speed and chlorophyll concentration. Moveover, β‐diversity increased within connected sites. Main Conclusions: Coralligenous cliff diversity responds both to the physico‐chemical features of the habitat and between‐habitats connectivity. However, our findings suggest that small‐scale abiotic and biotic processes could contribute to explaining the variability observed. Soil erosion in coastal areas, driven by global change and human activity, poses a significant threat to ecological and economic stability. This research investigates water erosion in the southeast of the Ría de Arosa (Pontevedra, Spain), utilizing the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model and Geographic Information System technologies. Key factors analyzed include rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, topography, land cover, and conservation practices. High-resolution maps (1 × 1 m pixels) identified areas at high risk of erosion. Vulnerable zones, such as coastal cliffs and vineyards, show severe erosion rates exceeding 50 t/ha/year (>5 mm/year), with the most extreme zones reaching up to 200 t/ha/year (>200 mm/year). These results emphasize that intervention could be required or recommended. Suggested measures include reforestation, effective agricultural land management, or the implementation of vegetative barriers to reduce erosion. These areas, characterized by steep slopes and sparse vegetation, are particularly susceptible to soil loss, necessitating specific conservation efforts. The results underscore the need for sustainable coastal management practices and preventive strategies to protect this vulnerable coastal zone. Implementing these measures is crucial to mitigating the impacts of soil erosion, preserving natural resources, and ensuring long-term ecological and economic resilience in the region. The collapse of ice shelves could expose tall ice cliffs at ice sheet margins. The marine ice cliff instability (MICI) is a hypothesis that predicts that, if these cliffs are tall enough, ice may fail structurally leading to self-sustained retreat. To date, projections that include MICI have been performed with a single model based on a simple parameterization. Here, we implement a physically motivated parameterization in three ice sheet models and simulate the response of the Amundsen Sea Embayment after a hypothetical collapse of floating ice. All models show that Thwaites Glacier would not retreat further in the 21st century. In another set of simulations, we force the grounding line to retreat into Thwaites' deeper basin to expose a taller cliff. In these simulations, rapid thinning and velocity increase reduce the calving rate, stabilizing the cliff. These experiments show that Thwaites may be less vulnerable to MICI than previously thought, and model projections that include this process should be re-evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women remain underrepresented in cabinets, especially in high-prestige, "masculine" portfolios. Still, a growing number of states have appointed women to the finance ministry—a powerful position typically reserved for men. Drawing on the "glass cliff" phenomenon, we examine the relationship between financial crises and women's ascension to, and survival in, this post. With an original dataset on appointments to finance ministries worldwide (1972–2017), we show that women are more likely to first come to power during a banking crisis. These results also hold for currency and inflation crises and even when accounting for the political and economic conditions that might otherwise explain this relationship. Subsequent examination of almost 3,000 finance ministers' tenures shows that, once in office, crises shorten men's (but not women's) time in the post. Together, these results suggest that women can sometimes seize on crises as opportunities to access traditionally male-dominated positions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rocky coastlines are characterised by steep cliffs, which frequently experience a variety of natural processes that often exhibit intricate interdependencies, such as rainfall, ice and water run-off, and marine actions. The advent of high temporal and spatial resolution data, that can be acquired through remote sensing and geomatics techniques, has facilitated the safe exploration of otherwise inaccessible areas. The datasets that can be gathered from these techniques, typically combined with data from fieldwork, can subsequently undergo analyses employing/applying machine learning algorithms and/or numerical modeling, in order to identify/discern the predominant influencing factors affecting cliff top erosion. This study focuses on a specific case situated at the Conero promontory of the Adriatic Sea in the Marche region. The research methodology entails several steps. Initially, the morphological, geological and geomechanical characteristics of the areas were determined through unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and conventional geological/geomechanical surveys. Subsequently, cliff top retreat was determined within a GIS environment by comparing orthophotos taken in 1978 and 2022 using the DSAS tool (Digital Shoreline Analysis System), highlighting cliff top retreat up to 50 m in some sectors. Further analysis was conducted via the use of two Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, namely Random Forest (RF) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). The Mean Decrease in Impurity (MDI) methodology was employed to assess the significance of each factor. Both algorithms yielded congruent results, emphasising that cliff top erosion rates are primarily influenced by slope height. Finally, a validation of the ML algorithm results was conducted using 2D Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM) codes. Ten sections extracted from the sector experiencing the most substantial cliff top retreat, as identified by DSAS, were utilised for 2D LEM analysis. Factor of Safety (FS) values were identified and compared with the cliff height of each section. The results from the 2D LEM analyses corroborated the outputs of the ML algorithms, showing a strong correlation between the slope instability and slope height (R2 of 0.84), with FS decreasing with slope height. Mediterranean coastal cliffs are reservoirs of plant biodiversity, hosting vulnerable plant species particularly exposed to the risk of local extinction due to extreme abiotic conditions and climate changes. Therefore, studies aiming to understand the tolerance of cliff plant species to abiotic stresses are important to predict their long‐time persistence or to highlight inherent threats. We used an integrative approach including anatomical, physiological and phenotypic analyses on (a) seeds, (b) cotyledons of seedlings; and (c) young plants to assess whether the cliff species Brassica incana, can tolerate exposure to different seawater (SW: 25%, 50% and 100%) concentrations during the early stages of its life cycle. Seeds could germinate when exposed to up to 50% SW. Seeds did not germinate in 100% SW, but could resume germination after washing with freshwater. Seed germination rate also decreased with increasing SW concentration. Exposure to SW decreased stomatal size and stomatal index of cotyledons and caused long‐lasting and severe damage to the photochemical reactions of photosynthesis. Photochemistry was also sensitive to SW in young plants, but the effect was lower than in cotyledons. This may involve a remodulation of chloroplast dimensions and activation of cellular metabolism. However, photochemical reactions limited photosynthesis at100% SW even after recovery from SW exposure. Our data show that B. incana has strong tolerance to seawater and shows clear signs of halophytic adaptation. This study presents a semi-automated approach utilizing unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys to accurately estimate the abundance of Pacific walruses at large coastal haulouts in Chukotka, Russia. Seven major haulout sites were surveyed during the summers and falls of 2017–2019. Walrus counts were performed using three distinct methods: traditional visual land-based counts, complete head counts utilizing georeferenced UAV imagery, and counting walruses within model polygons within the haulout outline and employing various extrapolation techniques to predict walrus abundance across the haulout area. The results indicated that traditional visual counts neither yielded consistent results nor allowed for uncertainty estimation, unlike the site- and date-specific direct extrapolation method and the non-specific linear regression model. These latter methods consistently provided estimates, on average, within 5% of the "true" abundance determined through complete photo-based head counts. Beside yielding accurate estimates, these semi-automated methods significantly reduced counting time by at least 63%, in contrast to complete head counts. The non-specific model, which allowed the estimation of walrus abundance based on the type of the terrain and the haulout area was less accurate compared with site and date specific estimates, but provided a tool to estimate abundance when no field visits are conducted, e.g., by using high-resolution satellite imagery to measure haulout area. This model revealed that the haulouts located on flat sandy beaches exhibited mean walrus densities approximately 30.5% times higher than those on rocky shores surrounded by cliffs: 0.879 (SD = 0.1302) and 0.648 (SD = 0.1753) walrus per m2 correspondingly. The estimated daily walrus abundance at major Chukotkan haulouts in 2017–2019 ranged between 15 and 94,660 (mean = 10,397, SD = 14,477) walruses with the maximum seasonal abundances reported at Cape Serdtse-Kamen as 94,960 on 10-Oct-2017, 26,850 on 10-Oct-2018, and 87,595 on 10-Oct-2019. Cliffs contain one of the least known plant communities, which has been overlooked in biodiversity assessments due to the inherent inaccessibility. Our study adopted the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the telephoto camera to remotely clarify floristic variability across unreachable cliffs. Studied cliffs comprised 17 coastal and 13 inland cliffs in Gageodo of South Korea, among which 9 and 5 cliffs were grazed by the introduced cliff-dwelling goats. The UAV telephotography showed 154 and 166 plant species from coastal and inland cliffs, respectively. Inland cliffs contained more vascular plant species (P < 0.001), increased proportions of fern and woody species (P < 0.05), and decreased proportion of herbaceous species (P < 0.001) than coastal cliffs. It was also found that coastal and inland cliffs differed in the species composition (P < 0.001) rather than taxonomic beta diversity (P = 0.29). Furthermore, grazed coastal cliffs featured the elevated proportions of alien and annual herb species than ungrazed coastal cliffs (P < 0.05). This suggests that coastal cliffs might not be totally immune to grazing if the introduced herbivores are able to access cliff microhabitats; therefore, such anthropogenic introduction of cliff-dwelling herbivores should be excluded to conserve the native cliff plant communities. The detachment cliff is a bifurcative transition to partial detachment recently discovered at the DIII-D tokamak (McLean et al 2015 J. Nucl. Mater. 463 533–6). This work presents a database analysis of target parameters in L-mode and H-mode discharges to search for a detachment cliff at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG). Most of the transitions from attached to partially detached divertor conditions observed in H- and L-mode discharges in AUG show bifurcative-like characteristics that are consistent with the properties of the detachment cliff if the B × ∇ B drift is directed towards the active X-point. In the operational space of power and density, the bifurcative transitions identified during an L-mode discharge occur at injected power and density higher than a threshold value ( P tot > 0.7 MW and n e > 1.6 × 10 19 m−3, respectively). Furthermore, the temperatures at which the transitions start are found to be insensitive to the injected impurity, the injected power and the value of the upstream density. Finally, the study of the evolution of the target parameters, of the intensity of the D α line and of specific manometers and bolometer lines of sights shows that the physical process underlying the detachment cliff and the self-sustained divertor oscillations (Heinrich 2020 Nucl. Background: Cliffs are recognized as one of the most challenging environments for plants, characterized by harsh conditions such as drought, infertile soil, and steep terrain. However, they surprisingly host ancient and diverse plant communities and play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity. The Taihang Mountains, which act as a natural boundary in eastern China, support a rich variety of plant species, including many unique to cliff habitats. However, it is little known how cliff plants adapt to harsh habitats and the demographic history in this region. Results: To better understand the demographic history and adaptation of cliff plants in this area, we analyzed the chromosome-level genome of a representative cliff plant, T. rupestris var. ciliata, which has a genome size of 769.5 Mb, with a scaffold N50 of 104.92 Mb. The rapid expansion of transposable elements may have contributed to the increasing genome and its ability to adapt to unique and challenging cliff habitats. Comparative analysis of the genome evolution between Taihangia and non-cliff plants in Rosaceae revealed a significant expansion of gene families associated with oxidative phosphorylation, which is likely a response to the abiotic stresses faced by cliff plants. This expansion may explain the long-term adaptation of Taihangia to harsh cliff environments. The effective population size of the two varieties has continuously decreased due to climatic fluctuations during the Quaternary period. Furthermore, significant differences in gene expression between the two varieties may explain the varied leaf phenotypes and adaptations to harsh conditions in different natural distributions. The integration of high-resolution seismic profiles, core data and radiocarbon plus U-Th datings, allows to document the late Quaternary succession of the Trieste Gulf, which represents the easternmost part of the northern Adriatic Sea. This succession consists of an alternation of shallow-marine and continental deposits organized to compose four transgressive-regressive sequences down to ca. 90 m below present sea level. The sequences terminate landwards against a stepped surface bounding the Eocene Trieste Flysch and produced by alternating episodes of wave erosion during transgressions and subaerial exposure during stages of relative sea-level fall and lowstand. Two shallow-marine wedges, in addition to the Holocene one, have been recognized; they are associated with the Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 5.5 (Tyrrhenian) and probably at least one of the peaks of MIS 7. The recognized shallow-marine wedges typically prograde just seaward of a buried wave-cut platform lying in front of a receding paleo-coastal cliff. A previously unrecognized stratigraphic hiatus of ca. 25 ka duration, containing the whole Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) phase, was found at the top of palustrine deposits that accumulated on the MIS 5.5 marine sediments until ca. 40 cal ka B.P. and a post-LGM peat bed accumulated during the Younger Dryas stadial. The beginning of the Holocene was characterized by marked fluvial aggradation preceding the marine transgression at ca. 11-10 cal ka B.P. This new evidence is invaluable for better understanding late Quaternary sedimentary and erosional episodes that characterized the easternmost part of the norther Adriatic Sea, in the frame of the well-known glacio-eustatic sea-level changes. Coastal cliffs erode in response to short- and long-term environmental changes, but predicting these changes continues to be a challenge. In addition to a chronic lack of data on the cliff face, vegetation presence and growth can bias our erosion measurements and limit our ability to detect geomorphic erosion by obscuring the cliff face. This paper builds on past research segmenting vegetation in three-band red, green, blue (RGB) imagery and presents two approaches to segmenting and filtering vegetation from the bare cliff face in dense point clouds constructed from RGB images and structure-from-motion (SfM) software. Vegetation indices were computed from previously published research and their utility in segmenting vegetation from bare cliff face was compared against machine learning (ML) models for point cloud segmentation. Results demonstrate that, while existing vegetation indices and ML models are both capable of segmenting vegetation and bare cliff face sediments, ML models can be more efficient and robust across different growing seasons. ML model accuracy quickly reached an asymptote with only two layers and RGB images only (i.e., no vegetation indices), suggesting that these more parsimonious models may be more robust to a range of environmental conditions than existing vegetation indices which vary substantially from one growing season to another with changes in vegetation phenology. The opening of the Cacela Inlet (southern Portugal) in 2010 led to unforeseen effects observed after 2017, including an extreme acceleration of the retreat of the inland lagoon margin from about 0.2 to 2 m/year. This was a consequence of the development of a large flood delta in an area of limited accommodation space, forcing the main tidal channel to move inland. The coastal retreat currently affects a flat sandy area that separates the old and inactive Cacela cliff from the lagoon. Between 2025 and 2030, the currently inactive Cacela cliff is likely to become active again, posing a potential risk of damage to a medieval fortress and the existing settlement of Cacela Velha, an unforeseen cascading effect of the opening of the inlet. Motivation Deep graph learning (DGL) has been widely employed in the realm of ligand-based virtual screening. Within this field, a key hurdle is the existence of activity cliffs (ACs), where minor chemical alterations can lead to significant changes in bioactivity. In response, several DGL models have been developed to enhance ligand bioactivity prediction in the presence of ACs. Yet, there remains a largely unexplored opportunity within ACs for optimizing ligand bioactivity, making it an area ripe for further investigation. Results We present a novel approach to simultaneously predict and optimize ligand bioactivities through DGL and ACs (OLB-AC). OLB-AC possesses the capability to optimize ligand molecules located near ACs, providing a direct reference for optimizing ligand bioactivities with the matching of original ligands. To accomplish this, a novel attentive graph reconstruction neural network and ligand optimization scheme are proposed. Attentive graph reconstruction neural network reconstructs original ligands and optimizes them through adversarial representations derived from their bioactivity prediction process. Experimental results on nine drug targets reveal that out of the 667 molecules generated through OLB-AC optimization on datasets comprising 974 low-activity, noninhibitor, or highly toxic ligands, 49 are recognized as known highly active, inhibitor, or nontoxic ligands beyond the datasets' scope. The 27 out of 49 matched molecular pairs generated by OLB-AC reveal novel transformations not present in their training sets. The adversarial representations employed for ligand optimization originate from the gradients of bioactivity predictions. Therefore, we also assess OLB-AC's prediction accuracy across 33 different bioactivity datasets. Results show that OLB-AC achieves the best Pearson correlation coefficient (r 2) on 27/33 datasets, with an average improvement of 7.2%–22.9% against the state-of-the-art bioactivity prediction methods. Modafinil analogs with either a sulfoxide or sulfide moiety have improved binding affinities at the human dopamine transporter (hDAT) compared to modafinil, with lead sulfoxide-substituted analogs showing characteristics of atypical inhibition (e.g., JJC8-091). Interestingly, the only distinction between sulfoxide and sulfide substitution is the presence of one additional oxygen atom. To elucidate why such a subtle difference in ligand structure can result in different typical or atypical profiles, we investigated two pairs of analogs. Our quantum mechanical calculations revealed a more negatively charged distribution of the electrostatic potential surface of the sulfoxide substitution. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrated that sulfoxide-substituted modafinil analogs have a propensity to attract more water into the binding pocket. They also exhibited a tendency to dissociate from Asp79 and form a new interaction with Asp421, consequently promoting an inward-facing conformation of hDAT. In contrast, sulfide-substituted analogs did not display these effects. These findings elucidate the structural basis of the activity cliff observed with modafinil analogs and also enhance our understanding of the functionally relevant conformational spectrum of hDAT. We use structure from motion–multiview stereo (SM) terrain models developed from ground-based images and images acquired from uncrewed aircraft (aka drones) as a base map for three-dimensional (3-D) mapping on the walls of a deep canyon in the Panamint Range of eastern California, USA. The ability to manipulate the 3-D model with views from arbitrary look directions and broad scale range revealed structures that were invisible to conventional two-dimensional (2-D) mapping because of both the scale of the structures and their exposure on vertical to near-vertical cliff faces. The analysis supports field evidence for four phases of ductile deformation, with only one of the younger phases documented on early geologic maps of the area. The oldest deformational event (D1) produced the main metamorphic fabric and pre-dates Late Cretaceous plutons. This deformation produced a 200–250-m-thick high-strain zone localized along marbles at the top of the Kingston Peak Formation and lower Noonday Formation. Geometric analysis from the model suggests strongly that large sheath folds at scales of 100–300 m are developed within these marbles. Large measured finite strains indicate displacement across this apparent shear zone of at least 4–5 km and displacements of tens of kilometers are allowable, yet the structure is invisible to conventional mapping because the high-strain zone is stratabound. The main fabric shows two clear overprints and a third that is likely an even younger deformation. D2 and D3 generated tight to close, recumbent folds and open to tight, upright folds, respectively, both folding the main foliation with localized development of crenulation cleavages axial planar to the folds. An additional overprint shows no clear cross-cutting relationship with D2 or D3 fabrics and could be a manifestation of either of those events, although the deformation is spatially limited to a narrow shear zone beneath a brittle, dextral-normal fault with the same kinematics as a mylonitic fabric in a Cretaceous granite in the footwall. This observation suggests an extensional, core complex–style deformation to produce this structure. We suggest that 3-D mapping has the potential to revolutionize geologic mapping studies, particularly where steep topography provides 3-D views that are virtually invisible on conventional 2-D maps. Previously bewildering geologic puzzles can be solved by the ability to visualize large cliff exposures from arbitrary angles and map the features in true 3-D at resolutions to the centimeter level. Although this study emphasized intermediate scales imaged by a drone, our methods here are easily extended to larger scales using a crewed aircraft for imaging. We suggest these methods should be used routinely in frontier areas with steep terrain where aviation is already in use for access, but the methods can be employed anywhere steep terrain “hides” major rock exposures on conventional 2-D maps. This study explores the structure, modulation, and impacts of the mean diurnal climate across southeast Africa using high-resolution hourly reanalysis and satellite rainfall. This research was motivated by upward trends in diurnal temperature range and vegetation index over the Drakensberg escarpment. Statistical analysis identified a land-sea rainfall dipole pattern associated with diurnal airflows. Point-to-field regressions (Oct–Mar 2000–2023) found that sea breeze-driven convection is underpinned by 'col' airflow between adjacent sub-tropical low-pressure cells (30°S, 20°E/22°S, 37°E) and a weak mid-latitude anticyclone (40°S, 10°E). Diurnal residual and case study analysis demonstrate an ~ 6-m/s sea breeze penetrating ~ 200 km inland during the day, as part of an over-turning zonal circulation. Land > sea rainfall during summer is initiated by temperature gradients ∂T/∂x ~ 5 °C at 29°S, 31°E and convergence in the afternoon ∂U/∂x ~ − 4 × 10−5 s−1. Further inland (29°S, 26°E) a 1007-hPa thermal low and counter-clockwise rotating airflows interact with the incoming sea breeze. Together these contribute to evening rainfall ~ 30 mm over the Drakensberg escarpment. Hosting 1460 plant and 126 vertebrate endemic species, the Great Escarpment (hereafter, Escarpment) forms a semi‐circular "amphitheater" of mountains girdling southern Africa from arid west to temperate east. Since arid and temperate biota are usually studied separately, earlier studies overlooked the biogeographical importance of the Escarpment as a whole. Bats disperse more widely than other mammalian taxa, with related species and intraspecific lineages occupying both arid and temperate highlands of the Escarpment, providing an excellent model to address this knowledge gap. We investigated patterns of speciation and micro‐endemism from modeled past, present, and future distributions in six clades of southern African bats from three families (Rhinolophidae, Cistugidae, and Vespertilionidae) having different crown ages (Pleistocene to Miocene) and biome affiliations (temperate to arid). We estimated mtDNA relaxed clock dates of key divergence events across the six clades in relation both to biogeographical features and patterns of phenotypic variation in crania, bacula and echolocation calls. In horseshoe bats (Rhinolophidae), both the western and eastern "arms" of the Escarpment have facilitated dispersals from the Afrotropics into southern Africa. Pleistocene and pre‐Pleistocene "species pumps" and temperate refugia explained observed patterns of speciation, intraspecific divergence and, in two cases, mtDNA introgression. The Maloti‐Drakensberg is a center of micro‐endemism for bats, housing three newly described or undescribed species. Vicariance across biogeographic barriers gave rise to 29 micro‐endemic species and intraspecific lineages whose distributions were congruent with those identified in other phytogeographic and zoogeographic studies. Although Köppen–Geiger climate models predict a widespread replacement of current temperate ecosystems in southern Africa by tropical or arid ecosystems by 2070–2100, future climate Maxent models for 13 bat species (all but one of those analyzed above) showed minimal range changes in temperate species from the eastern Escarpment by 2070, possibly due to the buffering effect of mountains to climate change. Globally, the rapid retreat of coastal cliffs poses a profound risk to property, transport infrastructure, and public safety. To quantify and compare cliff top and cliff face retreat and identify erosion processes, this study combines historical (1842–2000) maps and orthophotos with contemporary UAV surveys (2019–2023) to quantify cliff top and cliff face retreat along a 240 m wide coastal drumlin in Galway Bay, Ireland. Retreat rates for the cliff top and cliff face were calculated using 2D mapping and 3D modelling, respectively. Critically, the choice of method has a significant impact on calculated rates of cliff top retreat, with output from the 2D mapping approach (0.14 +/− 0.02 m yr−1) being double that of the 3D modelling approach (0.08 +/− 0.02 m year−1). The aperiodic development of a talus cone, which temporarily protects the cliff from storm waves, also influences estimates of cliff retreat. The repeat cycles of talus slope formation and removal in this high wave energy environment suggest that the drumlin scarp transitions between a periodically transport-limited and supply-limited system over short- and long-time periods, respectively, on the continuum of cliff types. These results warrant further research to identify and quantify the rates, patterns, drivers (marine and subaerial processes), and timing of cliff retreat in response to climate change. We present an analysis and interpretation of potential cliff stability at a low-level waste disposal facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, using cliff morphologic and fracture characteristics coupled with carbon-14 surface exposure dating. Our study is important as it directly bears on the licensing criteria for low-level radioactive waste sites. We find that future characteristic cliff failures will likely not breach disposal pits and shafts over the 1000-year minimum regulatory period. Further, we find, using a multivariate regression model, that slope angle and cliff face aspect are sub-equal in importance to predict regions of high risk of failure when combined with surface exposure ages and assuming that old exposure ages are most indicative of stability (instability) and therefore can aid decision making in final design implementation. Rock fall accidents in mountainous cliff areas have significant consequences for human life and transportation. This study aimed to evaluate the rockfall hazard in the Cap Aokas cliff region located along the northeast coast of Algeria by identifying the key factors contributing to rockfall occurrence. We employed a combination of kinematic analysis, Matterocking method, and 3D trajectory simulations to determine zones that are susceptible to rockfall mobilization. By using a probabilistic and structural approach in conjunction with photogrammetry, we identified the controlling factors. The kinematic analysis revealed the presence of five discontinuity families, which indicated both plane and wedge failure modes. The 3D trajectory simulations demonstrated that the falling blocks followed the stream direction. We then validated the susceptibility maps generated from the analysis using aerial photos and historical rockfall events. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of rockfall phenomena and provide valuable insights for the development of effective strategies to mitigate rockfall hazards. The study delves into the relationship between corporate governance attributes and operational liquidity in 60 non-financial companies listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange during Covid-19. Utilizing Quine-McCluskey technique and fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), it examines the combined effect of Women on the Board, Board Size, Ownership by Blockholders, Board Qualifications and Busy Directors on Operational Liquidity. The necessary condition analysis (NCA) emphasises that firms can operate without reliance on any particular variable taken in the study. The sufficiency analysis provided an expanded understanding of the three conditions leading to the same outcome both before and during the pandemic. This research highlights the significance of the glass cliff effect and emphasizes the pivotal role of women in effectively managing liquidity during times of crisis. Seagrass meadows provide important ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, coastal protection from erosion, and sustained biodiversity and fisheries thereby improving the wellbeing and livelihoods of coastal communities. The erosion of millenary deposits of intertwined roots and rhizomes of Posidonia results in the formation of three-dimensional structures named escarpments that constitute a biogenic reef habitat. However, the natural history of seagrass escarpments including their formation processes and their role as habitat for reef fauna and flora remains poorly understood. This research located and characterized Posidonia oceanica escarpments in Menorca (Balearic Islands) and compared structural complexity and fish assemblages among seagrass escarpments, seagrass meadows, rocky substrates and bare sand with emphasis on its role as habitat and shelter for typical rocky fish. Fish abundance and biomass were similar between seagrass escarpments and rocky substrates (P > 0.05), but significantly lower in seagrass meadows (P < 0.001). The large number of caves found along seagrass escarpments provide shelter to fish, including species only associated to rocky substrates. Seagrass meadows form a rather homogenous habitat within their canopy, but the presence of seagrass escarpments enhances habitat heterogeneity and structural complexity along with fish abundance and biomass at the seascape level. Military trauma provides a unique pattern of injuries due to the high velocity, high kinetic energy ammunition utilized, and the high prevalence of blast injury. To further complicate this, military trauma often occurs in austere environments with limited logistical support. Therefore, military medical providers are forced to learn nonstandard techniques and when necessary, practice a level of improvisation not commonly seen in other medical fields. The case presented in this manuscript is a prime example of these challenges. At the onset of fighting both the medic's rucksack, carrying with it the primary source of medical gear and the precious supply of cold-stored blood products are lost. The scenario was further complicated by rough mountainous terrain and a prolonged evacuation time. The medical provider was forced to utilize nonstandard devices such as an improvised junctional tourniquet which used a rock to focus the devices pressure. They also adapted their basic understanding of surgical procedures to conduct a vascular cutdown procedure for wound exposure and effectively pack an otherwise non-compressible wound to a major artery. Despite a significant loss of equipment, the medic and their team were able to successfully care for a number of patients in this mass casualty scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice cliffs are melt hot spots that contribute disproportionately to melt on debris-covered glaciers. In this study, we investigate the impact of supraglacial stream hydrology on ice cliffs using in situ and remote sensing observations, streamflow measurements, and a conceptual geomorphic model of ice cliff backwasting applied to ice cliffs on Kennicott Glacier, Alaska. We found that 33 % of ice cliffs (accounting for 69 % of the ice cliff area) are actively influenced by streams, while half are nearer than 10 m from the nearest stream. Supraglacial streams contribute to ice cliff formation and maintenance by horizontal meandering, vertical incision, and debris transport. These processes produce an undercut lip at the ice cliff base and transport clasts up to tens of centimeters in diameter, preventing reburial of ice cliffs by debris. Stream meander morphology reminiscent of sedimentary river channel meanders and oxbow lakes produces sinuous and crescent ice cliff shapes. Stream avulsions result in rapid ice cliff collapse and local channel abandonment. Ice cliffs abandoned by streams are observed to be reburied by supraglacial debris, indicating a strong role played by streams in ice cliff persistence. We also report on a localized surge-like event at the glacier's western margin which drove the formation of ice cliffs from crevassing; these cliffs occur in sets with parallel linear morphologies contrasting with the crescent planform shape of stream-driven cliffs. The development of landscape evolution models may assist in quantifying the total net effect of these processes on steady-state ice cliff coverage and mass balance, contextualizing them with other drivers including supraglacial ponds, differential melt, ice dynamics, and collapse of englacial voids. Detrital chromite is currently accumulating in the wave-influenced gravel-dominated shoreface of eastern Port au Port Bay of western Newfoundland adjacent to the mouth of Fox Island River. Chromium (Cr) concentrations of up to 7485 ppm occur in modern cross-bedded shallow marine gravel and pebbly sand facies sourced from rapidly eroding coastal cliffs cut in a lateglacial and early postglacial fan delta and raised beach facies. These sediments fill a broad coastal embayment and were deposited by a glacially influenced Fox Island River during a phase of low relative sea level following final deglaciation of the Newfoundland Ice Cap between approximately 13 700 years B.P. (ybp) and 9500 ybp. Since then, coastal outcrops of these raised sediments have undergone rapid erosion in response to ongoing postglacial sea level rise outpacing the rate of crustal recovery. Geochemical analysis of 1149 sediment samples across the entire Fox Island River watershed identifies relatively low Cr concentrations (maximum 1860 ppm) in glacial and fluvial sediments, including those areas adjacent to chromite-bearing rocks of the Bay of Islands Ophiolite Complex. Conversely, uplifted lateglacial shallow marine gravels and associated raised beach/nearshore deposits along the coast show elevated Cr concentrations up to 5400 ppm, highlighting the importance of marine concentration of glacially derived sediment during deglaciation. At the present day, chromite-bearing lateglacial sediment is being reworked and transported southwards by shore-parallel littoral currents resulting in reconcentration of Cr within a nearshore placer about 8 km long and 2 km wide, though the deposit may be more extensive offshore where it is likely covered by transgressive marine muds. The glacial and postglacial history of the Port au Port Bay area was widely replicated in other areas of ultrabasic rock along the western coast of Newfoundland and the results of this investigation may aid the search for other nearshore glacially influenced marine placers. This study presents the creation of a virtual reality experience for the Museo Preistorico dei Balzi Rossi e Zona Archeologica (hence Balzi Rossi Museum) commemorating the centenary of Prince Albert I Grimaldi's archaeological work at the site. The project aims to preserve and convey the site's heritage through advanced VR technology. Photogrammetry was used for 3D reconstruction of the entire Balzi Rossi coastal cliffs, including the notable "Caviglione" and "Florestano" caves, known for their upper Paleolithic rock engravings. Two subsequent development phases produced the final public VR experience, incorporating Nanite technology for enhanced visual fidelity. This advancement resulted in a more detailed and immersive VR experience, presenting the Balzi Rossi cliffs across different historical periods, including the Würm glaciation. Key to this phase was optimizing the VR experience for performance, focusing on stable frame rates and minimizing motion sickness, and integrating a multi-lingual interface for broader accessibility. Since November 2023, the VR setup at Balzi Rossi Museum has been an educational and interactive feature enabling visitors to virtually explore the site's history. Multiple studies have investigated the occurrence of severe convective winds and have increased our understanding of the forces driving severe winds and their spatial and temporal patterns. Some of the data used in studies have come from airport stations maintained by the National Weather Service. Their standardization across the United States makes them ideal for research, but they are limited in their distribution. This study aims to create a climatology of severe convective winds in West Texas using a mesoscale network ("mesonet"). Like their Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) counterparts, these stations are standardized and well-maintained. This study provides a 15-y climatology (2005-2019) of severe convective gusts measured by the West Texas Mesonet (WTM). After extracting and manually verifying the measured gusts from over 30 WTM stations, both spatial and temporal distributions are presented. While temporal patterns in the gust distribution generally matched previous research, the high spatial resolution of the mesonet elucidated differences across a regional escarpment known as the Caprock. Comparison with regional AWOS and ASOS stations also revealed potential effects of a larger urban area. We have designed the MUTC-PD with an optimized thickness of cliff layer to pre-distort the electric field at the front side of the collection layer. With the optimized MUTC-PD design, the collapse of the electric field will be greatly suppressed, and the electrons in its collection layer will gradually reach their peak velocity with the growing incident light power. Moreover, as the incident light intensity increases, the differential capacitance also declines, thus the total bandwidth grows. It will make the MUTC-PD achieve high-speed and high-power response performance simultaneously. Based on simulation, for 16μm MUTC-PD with a 70 nm cliff layer, the maximum 3 dB bandwidth at −5 V is 137 GHz, compared with 64 GHz for the MUTC-PD with a 30 nm cliff layer. Three individuals of Prangos trifida (Mill.) Herrnst. & Heyn (Apiaceae) were found in Croatia for the first time in 2013. The population has increased in the last ten years and in 2023, 30 individuals were found. Prangos trifida grows on the small islet of Zmorašnji Opuh (Puh) in the Kornati National Park (Dalmatia) within the vegetation of salt-sprayed rocky cliffs.
