Robert Kegan's The Evolving Self: Problem and Process in Human Development (1982) is a psychological theory on personality development that is centered around the idea of meaning-making as the primordial activity of existence, and which proposes an understanding of the ways we conceptualize our self and other according to our current stage of development, with relevant implications for many types of care work, including education. This theory is presented here in the context of film education for film-directing university students, for which it hopes to inspire a more student-centered approach, which values process over outcome. As many of the professional abilities that are sought after in the training of film-directing students can be seen as intra- and interpersonal abilities, the conceptualization of self and other becomes especially relevant in this particular educational setup, where working with the students involves a close encounter, insufficiently recognized, with their meaning-making activity. This also brings into discussion the way we model ideals for teachers in terms of their own personal development and the role that the film school as an institution could play in this matter. - Abstract
This book helps us to understand the therapeutic processes involved in the multifamily group and gives us tools for effective management, making it an indispensable guide for professionals in all areas of human care who are interested in including multifamily therapy in their institutions. In recent years we have witnessed the emergence of forms of social and health care that incorporate the voices of the people who suffer and those of their family and social environment as a therapeutic resource. These include Multifamily Therapies, therapeutic interventions carried out through groups made up of several families (multifamily groups) in which the mechanisms of family therapy and group therapy mutually enhance each other. Among the various models of multifamily therapy, Interfamily Therapy has become the most widespread. It is an integrative and eclectic model inspired by attachment theory and dialogical practices and represents a new way of approaching human problems through sharing and learning together with others. The simplicity of its theoretical statements and methodology facilitates its application in any social, educational and health context by professionals from different backgrounds.

6. Expanding the Limits of Individual and Family Therapies : A Critical Realist Approach

- Abstract
This book invites individual therapists to think systemically (including issues of social justice) and family therapists to explore a deeper understanding of the individual in contexts, including the domain of the unconscious. Using a critical realist framework, it promotes multiple perspectives—often novel combinations from dissimilar psychotherapy traditions—to expand holistic understanding and provide a richer variety of resources to bring to co-constructed therapeutic encounters. It uses a critical examination of the often-unspoken philosophical underpinnings of psychotherapy practices to re-vision a range of theory and practice considerations—theory choice, the role of science, knowing and not-knowing, emotion in the system, power and autonomy, collaboration and change, and sameness and otherness. All the preceding elements of the book are then brought together in the clinical topics of triangulation, aggressive out-of-control behaviour, and self-harm. Numerous brief case vignettes and longer case examples ensure that theory is always grounded in practice.

- Abstract
This textbook provides a detail guide to the use of Attachment Centred-Therapy (ACT), a model designed over the course of three decades which enables future and present therapists to co-construct a more coherent narrative of a person's life, an essential indicator of one's emotional and mental health. This book provides students and practitioners undergoing professional development with a detailed and applicable guide to using the model, written by the man who designed and developed the therapy. As such, this book is based on real world experience of the implementation of therapy, considering theory and research, and demonstrates how ACT can be used in applications across a wide range of clinical contexts. The purpose of ACT is to help those undergoing therapy equip themselves with new resources which can assist in dealing with their predominate issues by changing how they process information about the past in the present, to achieve a better outcome in the future. ACT is a growth-oriented psychotherapy, designed using Maslow's Modified Hierarchy of Needs as a guide, and is distinctive because it utilizes the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) as both an assessment instrument and as a vehicle for therapeutic intervention. Another of its benefits is that it's a collaborative treatment, with the therapist forming a team with the therapy's recipient, and then engaging together in a joint effort to create a more coherent narrative of the past, and to correct errors in information processing. This textbook is made up of practical guidance on the application of ACT, with each concept brought to life with case-study examples, complete with sections of dialogue from sessions annotated to illustrate the methods. It will provide a valuable new teaching tool for teachers and students of systemic practice, family therapy, clinical psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy, alongside qualified practitioners, and practitioners in training.

- Abstract
Offering a much-needed update of Rogerian theory and practice, and based on insights from cultural studies and ecopsychology, this book breaks new ground by questioning the relevance of certain ways of thinking about counselling and psychotherapy not least in the current planetary emergency. In response to the growing need for therapists to address increasing anxieties about the climate crisis, Bernie Neville and Keith Tudor address the issue in terms that help therapists reflect on their practice. Based on the authors'previous publications and incorporating new material, this book presents and explores ideas that have been largely neglected in person-centred literature. It re-visions person-centred psychology (PCP) from what has become predominantly its application to individuals to a broader perspective on and about life and the living world. Further, it takes a philosophical and cultural perspective to re-present and re-vision PCP as a'we'psychology, an eco-psychology, and an eco-therapy.This book will be of interest to those working in the fields of person-centred therapy, ecopsychology, and ecotherapy as well as those involved in the education, training, and supervision of counsellors and psychotherapists.

- Abstract
This book offers a unique glimpse into the world of culturally diverse psychotherapists by exploring the professional experiences of Latino clinicians. Through their narratives, these therapists provide distinct and essential case studies that emphasize the significance of their identities as catalysts for transformation within the field of mental health. Rich with real-world examples, this book captures pivotal moments in the lives of these therapists, presented in narrative or testimonio formats. By incorporating these personal experiences, the book contributes significantly to the processes of decolonization and the re-centering of power within marginalized communities. It acknowledges the complex dynamics these individuals navigate as they interact with various systems, offering fertile ground for growth and change. These clinicians represent a range of identities, including first-generation immigrants, individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, first-generation college attendees, Latinx individuals, bilingual practitioners, and those with bicultural backgrounds.

- Abstract
Written by a diverse range of expert contributors, unified by a relational, ethics-based reading of person-centred theory and practice, this seminal text is the most in-depth and comprehensive guide to person-centred therapy. Divided into four parts, it examines the theoretical, philosophical and historical foundations of the person-centred approach; the fundamental principles of person-centred practice (as well as new developments in, and applications of, person-centred clinical work), explorations of how person-centred conceptualisations and practices can be applied to groups of clients who bring particular issues to therapy, such as bereavement or trauma, and professional issues for person-centred therapists such as ethics, supervision, and training.10 years after it was last published, this third edition includes new content on the climate crisis, intersectionality and working with racism and anti-racism. It includes new dedicated chapters on the Non-directive Attitude, Relational Depth, Experiential Practices, Working with Trauma, Online PCA and Person-Centred approaches around the Globe.International and interdisciplinary in conception, this is a cutting-edge resource for students of psychotherapy and counselling on a range of programmes, as well as professional practitioners working in the field.

- Abstract
What is counselling and how can it help? Does counselling work? How is counselling different from talking to my family and friends about my problems? The Psychology of Counselling explains the different approaches to therapy and how they are used in practice, giving information on what counselling can help with and what it cannot do. It looks at cognitive and behavioural therapies, psychoanalysis, and humanistic psychology, as well as exploring positive psychotherapy and the move away from a disease-based approach to counselling. It also reflects upon the broader landscape of therapeutic spaces and gives consideration to professional issues in counselling, such as ethics, supervision, and duty of care to clients. At a time when mental health and psychological well-being are central subjects of conversation in modern society, The Psychology of Counselling sheds light on the therapeutic process, what it involves, and how it works, to help all those seeking assistance for relieving emotional or psychological issues and improving their psychological wellness.

- Abstract
This book explores the way in which loving kindness, contained within professional boundaries of practice, is essential to the building of trust necessary to the psychotherapy relationship.Arguing that loving kindness has both biological and ethical relevance in assisting recovery from the trauma of emotional injury, Heather Reeves brings forth a renewed philosophical and cultural discourse about its importance in professional work with vulnerable people. The philosophical premise of the book is the concept of alterity, or awareness of the subjective reality of others, developed by Emmanuel Levinas and expressed in psychotherapy theories since the mid-twentieth century. Understandings drawn from attachment theory, affective neuroscience and psychodynamic psychotherapy are applied to case studies (one of them written by a client) from the author's practice and themes from literature and biography, including the long-term impact of the Covid pandemic. Loving Kindness in Psychotherapy will appeal to psychotherapists, counsellors and other mental health professionals as well as a range of other readers, including medical and palliative care professionals, educators, clergy, theologians and philosophers.

It is only in the last two or three decades that the medical model has come to dominate psychological theory and practice. This book considers the evidence that points us towards freeing ourselves from this creeping medicalisation and recognising the influence of our environments and circumstances on our psychological wellbeing. Contributors from a range of modalities illustrate how to practise in a demedicalised way. Drawing on these examples from the field and perspectives from different theoretical models, the book demonstrates that an approach freed from the medical model provides the ethically axiomatic framework for psychological practice today.

- Abstract
Personal Process in Child-Centred Play Therapy provides a very specific exploration of the play therapy process from the personal perspective of the play therapist. This volume examines the personal challenges, opportunities, losses and gains, and numerous obstacles that one has to negotiate through the course of both training to become a play therapist and working as a qualified clinician with children who have complex life difficulties. The book aims to offer a forum within which the role, function and process of the'personal'within play therapy can be explored. Bringing together a number of experienced play therapists, the book shares often deeply personal accounts of their experience of training and clinical practice. Chapters challenge the unspoken therapist taboos of shame, childhood trauma, vulnerability and grief, shining a light on the more hidden areas of therapist experience. Clinical issues around the unconscious process are also explored, but once again from the personal position of the play therapist, rather than the child. With a unique and distinct perspective on the therapeutic process, this book is specifically intended for both trainee and experienced play therapists, but will be relevant to all psychotherapists involved in working therapeutically with children and young people.

- Abstract
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 I am a psychologist who has spent much of his career studying psychotherapy. My book, Client-Centered Therapy, is about the suffering and the hope, the anxiety and the satisfaction, that fills each therapist's counseling room. It is about the unique relationship each therapist forms with each client, and the common elements that they all share. #2 I was raised in a home marked by close family ties, a very strict and uncompromising religious and ethical atmosphere, and a worship of the virtue of hard work. I was fascinated by the night-flying moths, and I became an authority on the gorgeous Luna, Cecropia, and other moths that inhabited our woods. #3 I was a history major at Wisconsin when I fell in love with a girl whom I had known for many years. I was married with the reluctant consent of my parents so that we could go to graduate school together. #4 I was a member of a group that petitioned the administration to allow them to set up a seminar for credit, a seminar with no instructor, where the curriculum would be composed of their own questions. The seminary was understandably perplexed by this, but they granted our petition.

- Abstract
The therapeutic relationship, more than any particular technique or intervention, is the key to therapeutic success. Positive regard is a crucial component of that relationship. This book reconsiders the role of positive regard in contemporary psychotherapies. Positive regard, along with the therapist's empathy and genuineness, is one of Carl Rogers'three'necessary and sufficient'conditions for therapeutic change. However, positive regard is the least well-researched and most misunderstood of the three conditions. It has long been conceived as a potential ingredient in the formation and development of an effective therapeutic relationship, but many therapists in recent decades have considered positive regard a dubious ingredient, too oblivious to human frailty and malevolence, and too susceptible to a therapist's potential for collusion with patients'defenses and resistance to change. Written for a variety of psychotherapists, this book offers an investigation into the efficacy of positive regard by examining its history, evolution, misperceptions, criticisms, and value. The authors argue for a broader acceptance of the role of positive regard across diverse patients and therapies.

- Abstract
The client is the protagonist in the psychotherapy journey with the therapist supporting them on their journey. This book argues for the importance of recognizing clients'expertise on their own lives and allowing them the space to generate their innate capacity for self‑healing. The Other Side of Psychotherapy offers fresh insights into clients'experiences and offers guidelines for how therapists can capitalize on clients'knowledge, skills, and strengths to build the therapeutic alliance and ensure transformational change. Contributors present what is known about client factors, what can be inferred about clients from the literature, and what isn't known or is missing. They also emphasize that each client must be understood as an individual that does not always conform with broad empirical conceptualizations. Authors discuss implications for practice, teaching and training, and identify fruitful areas for future research. Case examples offer vivid, practical illustrations centering psychotherapy around individual clients in real‑life clinical scenarios.

What is it like to live with a chronic illness? How can counselors support those living with one? Allan Hugh Cole Jr. offers answers to these two questions and so many more in Counseling Persons with Parkinson's Disease. In ten succinct chapters, Cole offers a glimpse into life with Parkinson's and presents an insightful approach to counseling someone living with a chronic illness. Cole was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2016, and--though it hardly happened overnight--he has since discovered a new passion and drive for life. A teacher of social workers and counselors for many years, Cole has unique insight into chronic illness and the care required to help someone diagnosed with one. He delves into the importance of accepting a chronic illness and how this can create an opportunity for personal transformation, newfound meaning, and rejuvenated purpose. In addition to emphasizing the importance of self-reflection, he also offers evidence-based approaches to counseling. Cole's approaches to counseling draw on task-centered social work practice. Throughout the book, he engages with five purposeful actions tied to principles of constructivism, Aristotelian thought, American pragmatism, and theories of interpretation (hermeneutics). At once informative, realistic, humorous, and hopeful, this is a thoughtful guide for clinicians who give counsel, educators who teach counseling, people supporting someone else, and anyone living with a chronic illness.

- Abstract
This highly practical book is an accessible and grounded handbook for addressing challenging behaviour in children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), including autism. It recognises that challenging behaviour does not appear out of nowhere and is meaningful for the person exhibiting it. Behaviour can be communicative and an important signifier of underlying sensory or environmental issues. Focusing on a person-centred approach throughout, the book has advice and strategies for working with the client's families, support staff and professionals. It also presents best practice for analysing and addressing challenging behaviour in various settings such as schools, hospitals and the home, all while stressing the need to keep the human story at the heart of any assessment and intervention. Each chapter features questions for discussion or reflection and exercises for the reader to complete. Informal, frank and free of jargon, this is indispensable for professionals, parents, and anyone working with people with intellectual disability or autism.

This study reflects on how the ethical dimension permeates the formation of the person-centered psychotherapist, based on a reading inspired by Emmanuel Lévinas. Initially, the formative elements present in Carl Rogers' psychology are pointed out, and it is argued that such formation results from ethics of relational values and attitudes beyond the clinic's technical dimensions. Then, it is considered that the ethical elements present in this training help to perceive the person as the Other that cannot be totalized by the psychotherapist, transcending him. Then, three figures of alterity that appear in this formation are indicated: The Other of Unknowing; the Other of Differentiation; and the Other of Sensibility. It is concluded, then, that the ethics of radical alterity can be involved in the proposal of the Person-Centered Approach (PCA) as long as the psychotherapist's training in this Other-centered approach is considered. This perspective, therefore, enables non-technical learning of person-centered values and attitudes of congruence, unconditional positive regard, and empathic understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mindfulness meditation has received enormous empirical support over the past 20 years and has been integrated into the theory and practice of several clinical approaches. Although mindfulness is now an essential feature in the third wave of cognitive/behavioral therapies, there still has been very little written about the integration of, and the implicit commonalities between, mindfulness meditation and the humanistic/experiential approaches to psychotherapy. In this article, the author provides a brief description of the emotional concerns that fueled his initial encounter with a well-known psychologist and one of the first teachers of mindfulness meditation in North America and Europe. The author describes this encounter, suggests that this meeting was transformative because it combined mindfulness practice with the Rogerian elements, or core conditions, of successful client-centered psychotherapy, and argues that by itself, mindfulness embodies its own form of the same core conditions. Last, the author argues that mindfulness meditation and client centered psychotherapy are consilient approaches to mental health that promote the movement toward self-actualization. - Abstract
One of the paradoxes about psychiatry is that we have never known more about and better treated mental disorders, yet there exists so much unease about the practice of mental healthcare. Patients feel still stigmatized, psychiatrists are struggling with their roles in a rapidly changing system of healthcare, there is lack of consensus about what mental disorders are and what the focus of psychiatry should be. Person-Centred Care in Psychiatry: Self Relational, Contextual and Normative Perspectives offers a distinctive approach to two important linked conceptual issues in psychiatry: the relation between self, context, and psychopathology; and the intrinsic normativity of psychiatry as a practice.Divided in two parts, this book shows how the clinical conception of psychopathology and psychiatry as normative practice are intrinsically connected, and how the normative practice model can be conceived as a natural extension of the analysis of the web of relations that sustain illness behaviour as well as professional role fulfilment. Person-Centred Care in Psychiatry brings these topics together for the first time against the backdrop of unease about scientistic tendencies within psychiatry in an interconnected discussion that will be of interest to academics and professionals with an interest in the philosophy of psychology, psychiatry and mental health-care.

- Abstract
Do you ever find that you are less effective with clients who are provocative, angry, shut down, or emotionally labile? Would you like to be more effective helping clients with challenging problems, including trauma, addictions, and comorbid conditions? Clients can arouse strong emotional reactions in therapists, often termed experiential avoidance or countertransference. To be effective with these challenging cases, therapists must build their psychological capacity to stay self-aware, attuned, and clinically flexible while having strong reactions. This manual provides clear and practical deliberate practice exercises to help you master these inner skills so you can be a more effective therapist and enjoy your work more. This manual features a training plan that is based on the principles of deliberate practice, works with all major models of psychotherapy, aids all levels of therapist development, from beginning trainees to experienced clinicians, helps therapists be more effective with their most challenging clients, and protects the boundaries and privacy of trainees. Louis G. Castonguay, Professor, at Penn State University, said the book'is an innovative addition to the movement of deliberate practice,'and that'this book offers troves of ideas, tools, and resources for therapists of varied theoretical orientations and experience levels.'Catherine Eubanks, president-elect of the society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, commented that'by practical techniques for increasing therapists'capacity to be present and attuned in the therapy session, Rousmaniere draws attention to one of the most important ways to advance our field and improve our ability to help our patients.'

- Abstract
Evidence overwhelmingly shows that exposure therapy is effective for the treatment of anxiety and related disorders. Its adoption into clinical practice has been slow, however-in part because the available one-size-fits-all manuals often leave patients and clinicians unsatisfied. Personalized Exposure Therapy provides expert guidance to clinicians on conducting exposure-based interventions in a targeted and flexible fashion. Providing detailed information on a range of strategies for maximizing clinical outcomes from exposure, this book features a case formulation approach that personalizes the timing and nature of exposure practice. Case examples, scripts, and worksheets, presented in a practical, mentor-based format for planning and enacting individual sessions, ensure that clinical procedures are readily accessible for in-session use. Personalized Exposure Therapy is appropriate for early-career and experienced clinicians alike, and will also be suitable for use in graduate courses in clinical psychology, counselling, social work, nursing and psychiatry.

The book shows how, by understanding therapy as a performing art, clinicians can supplement their theoretical approach with techniques that fine-tune the ways their bodies, voices, and imaginations engage with and influence their clients. Broken up into accessible chapters focused on specific attributes of performance, and including an appendix of step-by-step exercises for practitioners, this is an essential guidebook for therapists looking to integrate their theoretical training into who they are as individuals, find joy in their work, expand their empathy, increase self-care, and inspire clients to perform their own lives.

In this case study, the unique features of providing telesupervision in a humanistic, systematic approach that takes in cultural issues are discussed. With the COVID-19 pandemic, therapists who supervise students have not only moved to various online platforms to supervise students, but also had to adjust to the uniqueness of telesupervision and to issues brought into supervision such as culture. In this case study a strong working alliance start to develop with this student prior to starting telesupervision. It allowed trust to develop by getting to know the student, looking at what the student wanted in during supervision and the requirements of the student's school. All of this was done to by using a client-centered/collaborative approach while finalizing a supervision contract. As this trust started to build and supervision moved to telesupervision, the writer helped the student explore self with genograms and cultural issues. As this was occurring, as the supervisor, it was important to keep account of myself and how that affected the supervisory relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This groundbreaking first volume of the Series has a number of features that set it apart from other books on this subject: Firstly, it focuses on interpersonal, humanistic and ecological views and approaches to P/MH nursing. Secondly, it highlights patient/client-centered approaches and mental-health-service user involvement. Lastly, it is a genuinely European P/MH nursing textbook – the first of its kind – largely written by mental health scholars from Europe, although it also includes contributions from North America and Australia/New Zealand. Focusing on clinical/practical issues, theory and empirical findings, it adopts an evidence-based or evidence-informed approach. Each contribution presents the state-of-the-art of P/MH nursing in Europe so that it can be transferred to and implemented by P/MH nurses and the broader mental health care community around the globe. As such, it will be the first genuinely 21st century European Psychiatric Mental Health Nursingbook.

- Abstract
First published in 2005 as Person-Centred Psychopathology, and now extensively updated and with a new title, The Handbook of Person-Centred Therapy and Mental Health challenges the use of psychiatric diagnoses and makes a powerful case for the effectiveness of person-centred approaches as the alternative way to work with people who would otherwise be diagnosed with severe mental illnesses, such as psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This updated second edition captures the significant changes in recent years in how mental health and ill health is conceptualised and understood, and in how mental health care is delivered. It demonstrates how the person-centred approach can help occupy the space that is opening up as mental health professionals look for alternatives to the medical model. And, while acknowledging the chasm that separates person-centred practice from the mainstream medical model, it argues for collaborative working with these fellow mental health professionals. Contributors from across the fields of research, policy-making and practice explore aspects of theory, professionalism, the role of culture, and the politics of the person-centred approach in relation to mental health. They demonstrate how Rogers'theories of personality and the actualising process are able to provide a model of human functioning that is relevant not just to counselling but to all mental health professions, and beyond, to the social sciences. They give examples of how the person-centred approach is being applied successfully in practice (and successfully evaluated). They offer personal testament to the challenges and creative dynamics of working in a person-centred way within mainstream contexts, and they review the vibrant political and professional divisions and arguments that continue to inform thinking and practice today. New chapters examine the influence of the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme in England, and how researchers are successfully overcoming the challenge of evaluating the effectiveness of person-centred approaches to severe mental distress.

The paper presents the author's original technique of intent-analysis of psychotherapeutic discourse, alongside the results of the in-depth psychological intent-analysis of Carl Rogers' psychotherapeutic speech, which was conducted using this technique. This paper includes a dictionary of therapeutic speech intentions, a classification of intentional characteristics of psychotherapeutic speech, some markers of intentions and an instruction for experts. The work includes an analysis of several therapeutic sessions given by Carl Rogers, as compared to those given by novice client-centered psychotherapists; the analysis was carried out using the author's original methodology (intent-analysis of psychotherapeutic discourse). The developed tools can be significant and useful in the supervision of practicing psychotherapists and the training of novice psychotherapists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In contrast to the institutional approach of years past, today most people with mental illness live in the community, and decide for themselves whether, and to what extent, to participate in treatment. Providers are now beginning to ask, How do I provide services that help people achieve their recovery goals? rather than, How do I get my patient to adhere to the prescribed treatment? Contributors to this volume describe the public health benefits that emerge when providers respect personal health care decisions even when the person making them has a serious mental illness. They also share evidence-based practices that enhance self-determination, such as creating an advance psychiatric directive, addressing clients information processing difficulties so they can better understand their treatment options, and motivational interviewing to support employment as part of a recovery plan. Rich examples of consumer-provider interactions illustrate how providers can instill hope and help activate the client s support.

- Abstract
There are many reasons why the practice of person-centred therapy can become difficult. An issue that is frequently brought to supervision is when the therapist's limits are challenged. It is therefore surprising that there is very little in the client-centred literature about therapist limits in counselling and psychotherapy with adult clients. This provides the rationale for this book as it attempts to redress that omission, offers a review of the existing literature and provides a starting point for discussion. Lisbeth Sommerbeck writes from her many years'experience as a psychotherapist working in the Danish psychiatric care system with clients with severe and enduring mental health problems. Many therapists fear that this client group will challenge their limits and Sommerbeck provides a straightforward appreciation of the problems and offers solutions.
