Disrupting bacterial quorum sensing (QS) signaling is a promising strategy to combat pathogenic biofilms without the development of antibiotic resistance. Here, we report that food-associated bacteria can interfere with the biofilm formation of a Gram-negative pathogenic bacterium by targeting its AHL (acyl-homoserine lactone) QS system. This was demonstrated by screening metabolic end-products of different lactobacilli and propionibacteria using Gram-negative and biofilm-forming Chromobacterium violaceum as the QS reporter and our anti-QS microscale screening platform with necessary modifications. The method was optimized in terms of the inoculation technique and the concentrations of D-glucose and L-tryptophan, two key factors controlling the synthesis of violacein, a purple pigment indicating the activation of the QS system in C. violaceum. These improvements resulted in ca. 16-times higher violacein yields and enabled revealing anti-QS effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lentilactobacillus kefiri, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Propionibacterium freudenreichii, including new cheese-associated strains. Our findings also suggest that acetate and propionate excreted by these species are the main factors that interrupt the QS-mediated signaling and subsequent biofilm growth without affecting the cell viability of the C. violaceum reporter. Thus, the present study reports a revised anti-QS screening method to accurately define new bacteria with an ability to combat pathogens in a safe and sustainable way.

The rapid growth of the salmon industry necessitates the development of fast and accurate tools to assess its environmental impact. Macrobenthic monitoring is commonly used to measure the impact of organic enrichment associated with salmon farm activities. However, classical benthic monitoring can hardly answer the rapidly growing demand because the morphological identification of macro-invertebrates is time-consuming, expensive and requires taxonomic expertise. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding of meiofauna-sized organisms, such as Foraminifera, was proposed to overcome the drawbacks of macrofauna-based benthic monitoring. Here, we tested the application of foraminiferal metabarcoding to benthic monitoring of salmon farms in Norway. We analysed 140 samples of eDNA and environmental RNA (eRNA) extracted from surface sediment samples collected at 4 salmon farming sites in Norway. We sequenced the variable region 37f of the 18S rRNA gene specific to Foraminifera. We compared our data to the results of macrofaunal surveys of the same sites and tested the congruence between various diversity indices inferred from metabarcoding and morphological data. The results of our study confirm the usefulness of Foraminifera as bioindicators of organic enrichment associated with salmon farming. The foraminiferal diversity increased with the distance to fish cages, and metabarcoding provides an assessment of the ecological quality comparable to the morphological analyses. The foraminiferal metabarcoding approach appears to be a promising alternative to classical benthic monitoring, providing a solution to the morpho-taxonomic bottleneck of macrofaunal surveys.

Medicine - Abstract
The complexity and heterogeneity of the human plasma proteome have presented significant challenges in the identification of protein changes associated with tumor development. Refined genetically engineered mouse (GEM) models of human cancer have been shown to faithfully recapitulate the molecular, biological, and clinical features of human disease. Here, we sought to exploit the merits of a well-characterized GEM model of pancreatic cancer to determine whether proteomics technologies allow identification of protein changes associated with tumor development and whether such changes are relevant to human pancreatic cancer.Plasma was sampled from mice at early and advanced stages of tumor development and from matched controls. Using a proteomic approach based on extensive protein fractionation, we confidently identified 1,442 proteins that were distributed across seven orders of magnitude of abundance in plasma. Analysis of proteins chosen on the basis of increased levels in plasma from tumor-bearing mice and corroborating protein or RNA expression in tissue documented concordance in the blood from 30 newly diagnosed patients with pancreatic cancer relative to 30 control specimens. A panel of five proteins selected on the basis of their increased level at an early stage of tumor development in the mouse was tested in a blinded study in 26 humans from the CARET (Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial) cohort. The panel discriminated pancreatic cancer cases from matched controls in blood specimens obtained between 7 and 13 mo prior to the development of symptoms and clinical diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Our findings indicate that GEM models of cancer, in combination with in-depth proteomic analysis, provide a useful strategy to identify candidate markers applicable to human cancer with potential utility for early detection.

FEMALE infertility , *LABORATORY rats , *SUPEROXIDE dismutase , *METHYLPHENIDATE , *HYDROCORTISONE - Abstract
Aim Methods Results Conclusion Research on the effects of methylphenidate on female fertility is limited. This study evaluated the effects of methylphenidate on reproductive function, oxidants, antioxidants, proinflammatory cytokines, prolactin, and cortisol in female rats.Forty‐eight albino Wistar female rats were divided into four groups consisting of 12 rats, which were given pure water orally once daily for 7 days (HG‐1), 10 mg/kg methylphenidate orally once daily for 7 days (MP‐1), pure water orally once daily for 30 days (HG‐2), and 10 mg/kg methylphenidate orally once daily for 30 days (MP‐2). At the end of the treatment periods, tail vein blood was collected from six rats per group for prolactin and cortisol determination. Subsequently, euthanasia was performed and the ovaries were removed. Ovaries were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), interleukin‐1 beta (IL‐1β), and tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α), and immunohistochemically. For breeding, the remaining six rats were mated with male rats for 1 month. Rats that failed to give birth were classed as infertile.A comparison of MP‐1 and MP‐2 groups to healthy controls revealed an elevation in MDA and corticosterone levels, and a decline in tGSH, SOD, and CAT levels (p < 0.001). Methylphenidate did not affect prolactin, IL‐1β, and TNF‐α levels (p > 0.05). MP‐1 and MP‐2 exhibited immunopositivity for 8‐hydroxy‐2'‐deoxyguanosine (8‐OHDG). MP‐2 rats developed 66.7% infertility while MP‐1, HG‐1, and HG‐2 rats did not.In ovaries, methylphenidate caused oxidative stress, but did not induce inflammation. Long‐term use of methylphenidate caused increased cortisol levels and infertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Occupational mismatch is a widespread phenomenon among immigrants in many European countries. Mismatch is predominantly measured in terms of formal education ignoring the imperfect comparability of international educational degrees. Exploiting internationally comparable cognitive skill measures from the PIAAC data, we examine whether overeducation implies only an apparent phenomenon or a genuine overqualification observed also in the form of cognitive overskilling. Our results for 11 European countries show significant differences in the incidence of formal overeducation and genuine overqualification between immigrants and natives.

PREMATURE rupture of fetal membranes ,LEUKOCYTE count ,PREGNANCY outcomes ,THIRD trimester of pregnancy ,SERUM albumin - Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the maternal serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) concentration as an oxidative stress biomarker in pregnancies complicated by preterm pre-labor rupture of membranes (PPROM) without maternal clinical infection and compare these results with healthy pregnancies. Material and methods: The present cohort study included 40 pregnancies complicated by PPROM and 49 similar gestational age healthy pregnancies in the third trimester of gestation. Maternal venous blood specimens were obtained at the day of first diagnosis. Maternal serum IMA level was assayed with an Albumin Cobalt Binding test. The subjects were followed up until delivery and perinatal outcomes were recorded. Results: The maternal serum IMA concentrations were significantly higher in the study group (0.56 ± 0.05 absorbance units) as compared to controls (0.54 ± 0.03 absorbance units) (p = 0.020). The maternal serum IMA concentrations were not significantly correlated with the initial maternal white blood cell count (r: 0.118, p = 0.269) and C-reactive protein levels (r: 0.066, p = 0.541). The maternal serum IMA concentrations were negatively correlated with gestational age at delivery (r: --0.248, p = 0.019), birthweight (r: --0.247, p = 0.020) and Apgar scores (r: --0.200, p = 0.049; r: --0.245, p = 0.020). The threshold value of maternal serum IMA concentration above 0.55 absorbance units indicated the pregnancy complicated by PPROM by 57.5% sensitivity and 57.1% specificity (Area under curve 0.613, confidence interval 0.50--0.73). Conclusions: The current study supported for the first time that there is an association between increased maternal serum IMA levels and the development of PPROM in the third trimester of gestation without maternal clinical infection. Elevated maternal serum IMA levels may alert the obstetrician about poor ongoing perinatal outcomes in the early phase of PPROM before increased maternal C-reactive protein and white blood cell count. - Abstract

- Abstract
The world of additive manufacturing techniques is a realm in constant development due to the structural need of the system to optimize the productive processes of modern industry. This industry increasingly seeks new manufacturing methods that are faster, more advanced, and that increase both productivity and decrease waste generation, as the world is becoming more aware of climate change and it is necessary to use resources responsibly. And it is in this situation that additive manufacturing methods stand out above traditional industrial manufacturing processes, as these are generally based on subtractive techniques such as milling, grinding, cutting, drilling, among many others. This causes waste generation during production processes to be incredibly large compared to additive manufacturing methods, which can greatly reduce this amount of waste, achieving reductions of up to 90%. The additive manufacturing technology commonly known as WAAM (Wire arc additive manufacture), or in Spanish, fabricación aditiva por arco de alambre, is one of these additive manufacturing techniques and also the basis of the project developed in this TFG. The objective of this research is to develop the necessary interfaces for the proper functioning of a WAAM printing station, using the dependencies of the CIM UPC. To do this, I will study the station available at the center, which is composed of a UR10e cobot from Universal Robots and a modified head holding a TIQ welder from Lorch. In order to automate the welding processes, I have developed all the necessary tools for adapting G-codes to the robot in question, I have learned about the operation of the collaborative robot and its limitations, and I have established the necessary communication interfaces for data acquisition and remote robot control, thus collecting data and improving robot control.

Objectives: A new short device for percutaneous endoscopic cholangioscopy was recently developed. However, feasibility and safety has not yet been evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess clinical success, technical success, and adverse events (AEs). Methods: This observational multicenter retrospective study included all patients who underwent percutaneous cholangioscopy using a short cholangioscope between 2020 and 2022. The clinical success, defined as the complete duct clearance or obtaining at least one cholangioscopy‐guided biopsy, was assessed. The histopathological accuracy, technical success, and the AE rate were also evaluated. Results: Fifty‐one patients (60 ± 15 years, 45.1% male) were included. The majority of patients had altered anatomy (n = 40, 78.4%), and biliary stones (n = 34, 66.7%) was the commonest indication. The technique was predominantly wire‐guided (n = 44, 86.3%) through a percutaneous sheath (n = 36, 70.6%) following a median interval of 8.5 days from percutaneous drainage. Cholangioscopy‐guided electrohydraulic lithotripsy was performed in 29 cases (56.9%), combined with a retrieval basket in eight cases (27.6%). The clinical success was 96.6%, requiring a median of one session (range 1–3). Seventeen patients (33.3%) underwent cholangioscopy‐guided biopsies. There were four (7.8%) cholangioscopy‐related AEs (cholangitis and peritonitis). Overall, the technical success and AE rates were 100% and 19.6%, respectively, in a median follow‐up of 7 months. Conclusion: Percutaneous endoscopic cholangioscopy with a new short device is effective and safe, requiring a low number of sessions to achieve duct clearance or accurate histopathological diagnosis. Swordtails (Xiphophorus; Poeciliidae) have figured prominently in research on fish mating behaviours, sexual selection, and carcinogenesis, but their population structures and dispersal patterns have been relatively neglected. Using nine microsatellite loci, we estimated genetic differentiation in Xiphophorus helleri within and between adjacent streams in Belize. The genetic data were complemented by a tagging study of movement within one stream. In the absence of physical dispersal barriers (waterfalls), population structure followed an isolation by distance (IBD) pattern. Genetic differentiation (F(ST) up to 0.07) was significant between and within creeks, despite high dispersal in the latter as judged by the tagging data. Such heterogeneity apparently was a result of genetic drift in local demes, due to small population sizes and highly skewed paternity. The IBD pattern was interrupted by waterfalls, boosting F(ST) above 0.30 between adjacent samples across these barriers. Overall, our results are helpful in understanding the interplay of evolutionary forces and population dynamics in a small fish living in a changeable habitat.

Maternal vascular hypoperfusion is the most common cause of fetal growth restrict ion. Maternal oxidative status features are identifiable on placental pathology, and antepartum diagnostic methods are rapidly evolving. The current study was constructed to determine the maternal oxidative status by measuring serum ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels in pregnancies complicated with idiopathic intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The current study was designed as a descriptive and cohort trial. A total of 87 pregnant women; 45 healthy controls and 42 pregnancies complicated with idiopathic IUGR were included to the study population. Maternal serum IMA concentration was measured prior to the administration of any medication. The perinatal outcomes of patie nts were also recorded. Maternal serum IMA concentration in pregnancies complicated by idiopathic IUGR was higher than in healthy controls. There was no significant difference between the groups (0.54±0.04 versus 0.55±0.06 ABSU, p: 0.314). IUGR is a significant pregnancy complication. Elevated oxidative stress which leads to an ischemic microenvironment is associated with IUGR. Maternal serum IMA which is a possible marker for oxidative stress is not increase in pregnancies complicated with idiopathic IUGR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
I denna pyramid sattes motivationsskapande värdeord in som valdes utifrån informanternas motivationsstrategier. This study focuses primarily on gaining an understanding of how secondary school music teachers experience their students' motivation to practice in individual instrument and vocal lessons. Secondly, it focuses on highlighting the motivational tools music teachers use to promote practice between individual instrument and vocal lessons. The study was prompted by a problem identified during the pre-service training, namely that students tended not to practice between their lessons. Hermeneutics was chosen as the theoretical framework because the study focused on teachers' understandings, perceptions and experiences of their students' motivation. It was conducted through five semi-structured qualitative interviews with music teachers, all of whom played different main instruments. The analysis process allowed the perceptions of the music teachers to be made visible and interpreted against previous research. The music teachers felt that motivation to practice has declined over the past ten to fifteen years and that their current students practice less than their previous students did. The informants linked the negative trend to various aspects such as social media and how these digital tools can negatively affect students' short-term thinking. Based on the findings of the study, a model in the form of a motivation pyramid was created. In this pyramid, motivational value words were inserted that were chosen based on the informants' motivational strategies. The model can be used by educators to create a more inclusive and motivated learning environment for their students. The discussion section of the study discusses the role of music teachers in student motivation, the didactic implications of the study, and suggestions for further research.

- Abstract
También se prueba la opción de utilizar un cilindro conductor conectado al electrodo superior en lugar del disco, pero no se consigue extruir satisfact, This project, which is carried out at the CIM UPC centre, conducts a proof of concept of the 2,5D technology called solution electrospinning as a result of a collaboration between Universitat de Girona and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya to make further steps in research in the creation of polymeric scaffolds. The main objective of the project is finding a method that improves the current process of creating these scaffolds using this technology and using a solution made of Polycaprolactone (PCL) and acetone, with the aim of creating a Machine which can perform this method in the near future. Through a strategy based on the analysis of the state of the art, an experimentation is carried out and it is divided into different stages, in which tests are performed with different geometric and parametric configurations, followed by the results analysis. Starting from the simplest possible configuration, where a needle is used in the upper electrode and a metallic plate as a collector in the lower electrode, the system complexity is gradually increased to determine how parameters affect the extrusion accuracy. By experimenting with two possible system polarities, it is demonstrated that the most optimal one is the Standard polarity (upper electrode electrically charged and collector connected to the ground). It is also shown that the presence of thin dielectric layers has a huge negative impact on accuracy. In order to improve the focusing level during the extrusion of nanofibers, it is firstly attempted to incorporate dielectric or conductive masks between both electrodes, but these prove to be ineffective. Then, it is demonstrated that the collector with point shape focuses much better than the metallic plate. The next step followed is the incorporation of a conductive disc to the upper electrode, resulting in very positive results. The option of using a conductive cylinder connected to the upper electrode instead of the disc is also tested, but proper extrusion is

- Abstract
Además de los aspectos técnicos y económicos, no podemos ignorar l, Additive manufacturing (AM) has carved a prominent space as a revolutionary tool in modern medicine, showing special applicability in the creation of orthotics. In this study, we delved into the evaluation of the dynamics and expansive potential of this technological convergence. Through the development and production of two arm orthotics prototypes, we were able to observe the wide range of possibilities that AM offers in medicine. The prototypes focused on different approaches: while one emphasized the importance of a customizable and reproducible design, ideal for quick implementation in medical centers, the other explored a more comprehensive integration of electronic and mechanical systems. The first prototype focused on the use of a 3D scanner, parametric design through Rhino and Grasshopper, and 3D fabrication by FDM using PLA. The second prototype was more oriented towards the integration of electronic systems such as muscle contraction sensors, control systems with Arduino, and servo motor actuators, finally resulting in the printing of an orthosis by SLS with PA. This dual approach not only provided us with valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of each method and material but also underscored the crucial need for flexibility and adaptability in the manufacturing process, especially when meeting the specificities and demands of the final products in medicine. The study also shed light on a critical point: the economic feasibility of establishing medical device production systems through 3D printing directly in the hospital environment. This proposal becomes even more relevant when considered within a circular economy model, where the reuse of plastics in hospitals not only results in economic savings but also positively impacts the environment. Beyond the technical and economic aspects, we cannot overlook the socio-cultural implications of these technological innovations. Adopting AM in medicine not only promises to enhance medical care but
