Karsts are physiognomies with unique reliefs formed mainly by the dissolution of carbonate rocks. Much of the water used for human consumption on the planet comes from karst regions. Herein we present data obtained from an ichthyological survey conducted in lakes and streams of Lagoa Santa Karst, located at the São Francisco river basin in southeastern Brazil. From December 2019 to March 2022, 49 random samplings were carried out at 17 points distributed in four streams and eight lakes. A total of 1608 individuals, belonging to 44 species, 38 genera, 17 families, and six orders were collected. When including data from previous surveys conducted in the region, we found that the ichthyofauna of streams and lakes of Lagoa Santa Karst is composed at least by 46 species, five of these being allochtonous. Characiformes was the most representative order, comprising 22 species. The most abundant and widely distributed species was the cichlid Cichlasoma sanctifranciscense, accounting for 18.5% of the total abundance and being present in 14 sampling sites. Aquaculture favors food sovereignty in Equator, maintains their livelihoods and boosts household unit incomes. The freshwater species Cichlasoma festae represents an important species of great local use. In this study, our objective was to model fry growth in Cichlasoma festae, produced in intensive systems with Biobloc technology. The study lasted 90 days and was carried out in the experimental farm "La María", in Quevedo Local Technical University (UTEQ). 15 cages were placed inside a reinforced concrete circular pond with Biobloc and 300 fries from C. festae with a weight of 4,9g were introduced. Individual biometric parameters of total length, weight and height were fortnightly measured in 75 fries from C. festae. Physicochemical parameters of Biobloc water (PH, temperature, oxygen, total ammoniacal nitrogen and suspended solids) were daily measured. Growth was determined using regression models and in a second stage the weight was adjusted to the best fit selected model, which was: Log-Y Square root-X ... which explains the 98,3% of the variability in weight. We may conclude with this study that Biobloc technology could be an alternative for intensive native species production. In future research, it will be necessary to advance in the knowledge of Biobloc conditions for each species, production biomass, aeration strategies for each growth stages and thus boost and optimize farming. The convict cichlid fish Amatitlania nigrofasciata, an aggressive fish species, was introduced in 1987 into the Balsas River basin in central Mexico, which is home to the native cichlid Mexican mojarra, Cichlasoma istlanum. Local populations of the Mexican mojarra have been hypothesized to be negatively affected by the introduction of the non-native convict cichlid fish, and the two species have been observed engaging in aggressive behaviours over resources such as food and shelter along this basin. Thus, we evaluated agonistic interactions between the native Mexican mojarra and the non-native convict cichlid fish. In experimental contests between the species, chases, bites, refuge use and defence, and food consumed were recorded and analysed. Contrary to expectation, the Mexican mojarra engaged in a greater number of chases and bites than the convict cichlid fish and was more successful in obtaining the resource under dispute (a refuge and food). La masculinización en peces cíclidos, es de importancia capital para fines de mejora en la producción piscícola. El objeto de la presente investigación fue obtener la dosis y tiempo óptimos de exposición a la hormona fluoximesterona (FM), durante la masculinización del cíclido Maya Cichlasoma urophthalmus. Así, se probaron, dos tiempos de exposición (45 y 60 días) y cuatro dosis de andrógeno (0, 15, 30 y 60mg/kg de alimento), de manera que se tuvieron cinco tratamientos (15mg 60d, 30mg 45d, 30mg 60d, 60mg 45d y 60mg 60d) y un grupo testigo sin hormona (0mg 60d, CTL), por triplicado. Un kilogramo de alimento iniciador para tilapia Purina (45% de proteína), fue rociado con solución hormonada previamente disuelta en alcohol etílico, a razón de las dosis de prueba antes mencionadas por separado. Se administró alimento hormonado a saciedad, a crías de C. urophthalmus (siete días después de la eclosión) según el tratamiento. Territorial aggression has been widely studied in males and it has been historically suggested that androgens are key mediators of this behavior. However, more recent evidence suggests that it is the aromatization to estrogens, rather than androgens themselves, that is key to regulating this behavior. Females also display aggressive behaviors, but the physiological regulation of female aggression is still understudied when compared to males. In this context, the challenge hypothesis postulates that male-male aggressive interactions stimulate the production of androgens in males in periods of social instability. Here we determine plasma sex steroid levels in Cichlasoma dimerus to assess whether estrogens are related to aggressive behavior and to test the challenge hypothesis in both males and females. We set-up challenge trials as intrasexual dyadic encounters and determined androgen and estrogen levels before and after the trial in both winners and losers. Even though there were no differences in initial estradiol-17β plasma levels between male winners and losers, initial levels were higher ( p  = .046) in female winners than in losers, while there were no differences in testosterone or 11-ketotestosterone levels. After trials, both males and females showed elevated levels of estradiol-17β and both androgens, but only males exhibited a significant 1.45, 5.42 and 3.2-fold increase in estradiol-17β, testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone, respectively ( p  = .023, p  = .016, p  = .018). Moreover, changes in circulating levels of estradiol-17β in females after the trials do not depend on their reproductive status or on the outcome of the contest. We suggest that female aggression is associated with initial levels of estradiol-17β, and that the challenge hypothesis, originally defined for androgens, could also be extended to estrogens. Abstract: Many fish species display compensatory growth (CG), a phenomenon by which fasted fish grow faster during refeeding. However, most studies use a group‐housed fish approach that could be problematic in social fish when interaction between individuals is not considered or eliminated. Additionally, the growth hormone (GH)/insulin‐like growth factors’ (IGF‐1 and IGF‐2) axis is implicated in postnatal growth in vertebrates, but its relevance in CG is not fully understood. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine whether CG occurs in a social fish, Cichlasoma dimerus, using an individually held fish approach and secondly, to evaluate the GH/IGFs expression profile during refeeding by 3 days and 3 weeks. C. dimerus showed partial CG. The feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was higher in three‐day‐refed fish, which presented higher GH plasma and mRNA levels than controls but shown no differences in liver and muscle GH receptors (GHR1 and GHR2) and IGFs mRNA levels. Surprisingly, three‐week‐refed fish exhibited GHR1 and IGF‐2 increments, but a reduction in GHR2 expression in muscle. These results show a strong association between GH levels, growth rate and FCE during refeeding, and a long‐lasting effect of refeeding on muscular expression of GHRs and IGF‐2. RFamide peptides are expressed in the early stages of development in most vertebrates. Gonadotrophin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) belongs to the RFamide family, and its role in reproduction has been widely studied in adult vertebrates, ranging from fish to mammals. Because only 3 reports have evaluated GnIH during development, the present study aimed to characterise the ontogeny of GnIH in the fish model Cichlasoma dimerus. We detected the presence of 2 GnIH-immunoreactive (-IR) cell clusters with spatial and temporal differences. One cluster was observed by 3 days post-hatching (dph) in the nucleus olfacto-retinalis (NOR) and the other in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis by 14 dph. The number of GnIH-IR neurones increased in both nuclei, whereas their size increased only in the NOR from hatchling to juvenile stages. These changes occurred from the moment that larvae started feeding exogenously and during development and differentiation of gonadal primordia. We showed by double-label immunofluorescence that only GnIH-IR neurones in the NOR co-expressed gonadotrophin-releasing hormone 3 associated peptide. In addition, GnIH-IR fibre density increased in all brain regions from 5 dph. GnIH-IR fibres were also detected in the retina, optic tract and optic tectum, suggesting that GnIH acts as a neuromodulator of photoreception and the integration of different sensory modalities. Furthermore, there were GnIH-IR fibres in the pituitary from 14 dph, which were in close association with somatotrophs. Moreover, GnIH-IR fibres were observed in the saccus vasculosus from 30 dph, suggesting a potential role of GnIH in the modulation of its function. Finally, we found that gnih was expressed from 1 dph, and that the pattern of variation of its transcript levels was in accordance with that of cell number. Introduction of non-native species is a problem worldwide. Local populations of the Mexican mojarra, Cichlasoma istlanum, have been hypothesized to be negatively affected by the introduction of the convict fish, Amatitlania nigrofasciata. The Mexican mojarra is a cichlid fish native to the Balsas-River Basin. As a first approach to understand the behavioral effect of the convict fish on Mexican mojarra, we experimentally studied the behavioral responses of the latter when exposed to the former. Thus, we recorded refuge use, swimming activity and feeding rate of Mexican mojarra in the presence of a convict fish, a conspecific, and alone. Mexican mojarra used refuges for longer, swum for shorter and ate less in the presence of convict fish than with conspecifics or alone. Because prolonged use of refuge habitat may deprive Mexican mojarra of opportunities to feed, grow, and reproduce, we hypothesize that convict fish can negatively affect the fitness of the former where the two species co-occur. Aggression is an extremely complex behaviour and female aggression is understudied when compared to males. Despite the fact that it has been suggested that conflict among females may be more frequently resolved peacefully, in many species females show high levels of aggression. We used Cichlasoma dimerus to describe dynamics and conflict outcome in intrasexual agonistic encounters. We performed encounters of two sex-matched animals in a neutral arena and we recorded agonistic interactions during one hour. All aggressive and submissive behaviours were described and quantified to perform the ethogram. Encounters followed three phases: pre-contest, contest and post-resolution. Latency, time of resolution and frequency of aggressive displays did not differ between sexes. Relative variations in size between female opponents better explained aggression outcome in each contest, since higher levels of aggression occurred in dyads of more similar fish. However, this was not observed in males, suggesting that probably morphological characteristics could be less relevant in male conflict resolution. Altogether these results suggest that in this ethological context, C. dimerus females are as aggressive as males and that they have similar motivation towards territorial aggression, emphasizing the need of deepening the study of aggression in females and not only in males. We evaluated the thermal regime and relative abundance of native and nonnative fish and invertebrates within Kelly Warm Spring and Savage Ditch, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Water temperatures within the system remained relatively warm year-round with mean temperatures >20 °C near the spring source and >5 °C approximately 2 km downstream of the source. A total of 7 nonnative species were collected: Convict/Zebra Cichlid (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum), Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii), Tadpole Madtom (Noturus gyrinus), Guppy (Poecilia reticulata), Goldfish (Carassius auratus), red-rimmed melania snail (Melanoides tuberculata), and American bullfrog tadpoles (Lithobates catesbeianus). Nonnative fish (Zebra Cichlids and Green Swordtails), red-rimmed melania snails, and bullfrog tadpoles dominated the upper 2 km of the system. Abundance estimates of the Zebra Cichlid exceeded 12,000 fish/km immediately downstream of the spring source. Relative abundance of native species increased moving downstream as water temperatures attenuated with distance from the thermally warmed spring source; however, non - native species were captured 4 km downstream from the spring. Fish diseases were prevalent in both native and nonnative fish from the Kelly Warm Spring pond. Clinostomum marginatum, a trematode parasite, was found in native species samples, and the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum was present in samples from nonnative species. Diphyllobothrium dendriticum is rare in Wyoming. Salmonella spp. were also found in some samples of nonnative species. This study investigated the influence of the rainy and dry seasons on the parasite communities of Cichlasoma amazonarum (Kullander, 1983) in a tributary of the Amazon River system, northern Brazil. Of 112 fish examined, 95.5% were parasitized by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare, Gussevia disparoides, Posthodiplostomum sp., Procamallanus ( Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, and Echinorhynchus paranensis, as well as by the Glossiphoniidae leech. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and P. pillulare were the dominant parasite species, with I. multifiliis the most prevalent and abundant; the leech (Glossiphoniidae) was the least prevalent and least abundant. Parasites presented an aggregate dispersion pattern and seasonal variations in infestation levels, influenced by the environmental conditions in the rainy season. Variation in the parasite dynamics created overall changes in the parasite communities, characterized by greater diversity, species richness and evenness during the rainy season. However, there was a high similarity (99.8%) in the parasite community structure between the rainy and dry seasons. During the dry season the hosts had predominantly 1-3 parasite species compared to 3-4 parasites in the rainy season. Some parasites in the eastern Amazon undergo population changes relating to seasonality. These results thus indicate the correct season to apply adequate prophylactic measures to reduce negative impacts of parasites in this wild ornamental fish when captured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecuador is considered the fishing capital of the Southeastern tropical Pacific with more than 900 native species. Cichlasoma festae represents an economic important freshwater species of much local use. Thus, in this study, our goal was to characterize this fish species during juvenile stages, as the first step for its conservation and valuation, and also for the preparation of proposals for sustainable rural development and formulation of plans for environmentally responsible fisheries management. The study lasted 25 weeks and was undertaken in the ictiohidrographic area of Province of Los Rios, which accounts for 35 % of native fish species in Ecuador. Weekly, the individual biometric parameters total length (L), body width (BW) and body depth (BD) of 90 juveniles of C. festae were measured. Growth was determined using non-linear biological regression models. The average standard length varied between 6.30 cm and 12.25 cm and the average weight varied between 4.99 and 35.71 g. The length-weight relationship was best fit by the equation lnW = -3.92 + 2.96 ln(L), and the species presented negative allometric growth. Finally, the best fit for the growth of C. festae was the Von Bertalanffy's model where L∞ = 19.758 cm, k = 0.028 cm week-1 and t0 = -14.463 week-1. We concluded that to support sustainable and reliable fisheries production studies, the growth record from length may be obtained with standard methods as those evaluated in this study, or may be obtained with new safer tools such as photogrammetry. This study evaluated the effects of diet containing 0 (C: control), 75 (D1), 100 (D2), 125 (D3) and 150 (D4) mg kg−1 F. vulgare essential oil on growth and reproductive performance of C. nigrofasciatum. A total of 225 Convict cichlids female with mean weight (1.65 ± 0.02 g) were distributed into 15 glass aquaria (15 fish tank−1) in triplicate treatments. During 40 days of experimental period, fish fed at 3% of their body weight daily. At the end of experiment, growth indices, gonadosomatic index and reproductive indices were determined. The best feed conversion ratio was obtained in D4 (1.19 ± 0.03, P < 0.05). The addition of F. vulgare essential oil did not have any statistical effects on other growth indices (specific growth rate, weight gain and condition factor). Total survival rates in all treatments and control were uniformly high, ranging from 93% to 97% ( P > 0.05). F. vulgare essential oil has no negative effect on survival rate of C. nigrofasciatum. There were no significant differences among protein content of fish body ( P > 0.05). The lowest value of fat content (26.5 ± 0.5%) was observed in D2, and it had significant difference with control and other groups ( P < 0.05). The ash percentage in treatments fed with F. vulgare essential oil were higher than control fish ( P < 0.05). The highest moisture content was detected in D4 (72.68 ± 0.19%) and D2 (71.23 ± 2%) groups. Among the used dosage, D4 was the most effective dosage that could significantly increase GSI (11.06 ± 1.55%), fecundity (340 ± 21) and hatching ratio (92.33 ± 1.63%). In this study, we analyzed gene expression profiles, plasma steroids concentrations, and gonadal morphology throughout the reproductive cycle of female Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840), a monogamous cichlid fish exhibiting social hierarchies. Fish were analyzed at six phases encompassing their annual cycle, namely resting (during the nonreproductive period), prespawning, 30 h post spawning, 4 days post spawning, 10 days post spawning, and subordinate (during the reproductive period). The histological and histomorphometric analysis showed that C. dimerus exhibits asynchronous ovarian development. Similar to resting females, subordinate females showed low gonadosomatic index, reduced expression levels of vitellogenin ( vtgAb), zona pellucida ( zpB), gonadal aromatase ( cyp19a1A), and low concentrations of plasma sex steroids, thus indicating that social intimidation by dominant conspecifics elicited reproductive arrest. In reproductively active females, a direct positive correlation between plasma estradiol, vtgAb expression, percentage of late vitellogenic oocytes, and gonadosomatic index was observed. These parameters were maximal at the prespawning phase, decreased at 30 h post spawning and 4 days post spawning, and then reached a peak at 10 days post spawning. Our results indicate that female C. dimerus become spawning capable after 10 days post spawning, coincidently with the shortest time interval between successive spawns recorded in captivity. Wild populations of the green mojarra Cichlasoma beani, are being pressured by anthropogenic activities. It is possible to mitigate the deterioration of native species populations by developing culture techniques. Environmental factors such as light intensity and photoperiod may affect the development of fish under culture conditions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the effect of these factors on growth, survival, and condition of C. beani cultured in different light intensities and photoperiods. Light intensities of 1000, 1500 and 2000 lux and photoperiod 24:00, 16:08 and 08:16 Light:Dark (L:D) were tested in 40 L tanks (10 fish per tank, three replicates per treatment) during eight weeks. There were no significant differences in light intensity or photoperiod, which was associated with the natural adaptation of the species to these factors. The results also suggested the favorable overall growing conditions during the trial and he response of the life cycle stage of the specimens used in this study. The results of the present study indicate that the natural adaptations of C. beani, allow the favorable culture in various light conditions in juveniles, which can be advantageous for commercial culture as may imply low energy costs. Among the wide variety of pharmaceuticals released into the environment, Fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is one of the most prescribed for the treatment of major depression. It inhibits serotonin (5-HT) reuptake at the presinaptic membrane, increasing serotonergic activity. In vertebrates, including fish, the serotonergic system is closely related to the Hypothalamic Pituitary Gonadal (HPG) axis which regulates reproduction. As FLX can act as an endocrine disrupting compound (EDC) by affecting several reproductive parameters in fish, the aim of this study was to provide an integral assessment of the potential effect of FLX on the reproductive axis of the Neotropical freshwater fish Cichlasoma dimerus . Adult fish were intraperitoneally injected with 2 μg g −1 FLX or saline every third day for 15 days. No significant differences were found on serotonergic turnover (5-HIAA/5-HT ratio). Pituitary βLH content in FLX injected females was significantly higher than control females; no significant differences were seen for βFSH content. Sex steroids remained unaltered, both in males and females fish, after FLX treatment. No plasma vitellogenin was induced in treated males. Some alterations were seen in testes of FLX injected males, such as the presence of foam cells and an acidophilic PAS positive, Alcian-Blue negative secretion in the lobular lumen. Although there is no clear consensus about the effect of this drug on reproductive physiology, these results indicate that FLX is acting as a mild EDC in adults of C. dimerus . En el sureste de México, la acuicultura se ha visto seriamente afectada por los altos costos de los alimentos comerciales. Como parte de la búsqueda de alimentos no tradicionales, probamos el pez de agua dulce Astyanax aeneus y el caracol Pomacea flagellata como posibles fuentes de proteínas para Cichlasoma urophthalmus. Aplicamos la hormona androgénica fluoximesterona durante 45 días. Un kilogramo de dieta experimental (P. flagellate/A. aeneus) y uno de los alimentos comerciales se rociaron con la solución de fluoximesterona/etanol absoluto, en 5 mg/L/tasa kg (hormona/alcohol/alimento). La dieta experimental y el alimento comercial (THA y SHC, respectivamente) fueron probados en crías de C. urophthalmus, sincrónicamente con sus grupos de control (TA y SC, respectivamente), por triplicado. THA produjo el mayor crecimiento específico y la media final peso (p0,05), teniendo en cuenta que la dosis utilizada no fue relevante.

Partial characterization of digestive proteases in the three-spot cichlid Cichlasoma trimaculatum juveniles was conducted. It was determined that there is higher alkaline proteases activity (3.95 ± 0.32 IU mg−1 protein) compared to acidic proteases (2.01 ± 0.57 IU mg−1 protein). Optimal temperature for alkaline proteases is 60 °C which resulted in more thermostability to temperature changes. On the other hand, optimal temperature for acidic proteases is 50 °C. Optimal pH for acidic proteases was pH 2, while for alkaline proteases, it was pH 10, which resulted in more stability in relation to pH changes than acidic protease. The use of specific inhibitors and the SDS- PAGE electrophoresis analysis revealed seven types of bands for alkaline proteases, which make evident the main presence of serine proteases. In acidic proteases, more than 98 g kg−1 of the activity was inhibited with pepstatin A inhibitor. Therefore, it is evident that C. trimaculatum digestion is composed by acidic and alkaline proteases; thus, it should be considered an omnivorous fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was carried out to determine morphometric and meristic characteristics of two populations (wild and cultured) of Cichlasoma festae and to establish whether populations could be discriminated based on morphometric variability. Twenty-two morphometric and four meristic characters were used to test the hypothesis differentiation. Univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) from 100 adult specimens showed significant differences (p <0.05) for 21 standardized morphometric measurements out of 26 characters among the means of the wild and cultured Cichlasoma festae populations tested. Cross correlation amongst certain morphometric variables (i.e. body weight, total length, standard length, pre-ventral length, AC1, LC1 and P1) were medium-strong (r ⩾0.5), while the remaining were weakly correlated (r <0.5). The length-weight relationship parameter b and condition factor (K) values were respectively 2.21 and 1.97 (indicating allometric growth) for cultured fish groups and 2.86 and 4.07 (p <0.05) for wild fish groups. The condition factor values were significantly different from each other and showed that feeding of cultured fish should be improved. This study aims to evaluate the effects of adding salt to water on the physiological parameters of the blood parrot cichlid ( Cichlasoma synspilum ♀ × Cichlasoma citrinellum ♂). The blood parrot cichlid is a popular species in the aquarium trade because of its behaviour and beauty. Salt is usually added to water during the culture or transportation of this fish. However, the manner by which the fish adjusts its physiological responses to salinity change is unclear. The effects of salinity on serum osmolality, immune-related enzyme activities, Na-K-ATPase activities in the gill, skin carotenoid content and oxygen consumption were analysed. Blood parrotfish individuals were transferred from freshwater to water with four salinity levels (0.16, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 ‰) for 168 h, and physiological responses were evaluated at 0, 6, 12, 24 and 168 h. Results showed no significant differences in serum acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activities, skin carotenoid content and oxygen consumption rate among the different groups. However, the serum osmolality at 6 h was significantly elevated. Moreover, salinity increase stimulated superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity from 0 to 6 h. SOD activity increased from 6 to 24 h but significantly reduced at 168 h when the fish were exposed to salt water. The SOD activity in the salinity 2.5 ‰ group recovered the initial level, whereas those in the salinity 5 and 7.5 ‰ groups decreased to levels lower than the initial level. The gill Na-K-ATPase activity significantly declined with time and salinity increase. Thus, adding an appropriate amount of salt can save energy consumption during osmoregulation and temporarily enhance the antioxidant activity of blood parrotfish. Relationship between diet and morphology of cichlid were analyzed considering that the trophic apparatus determines differential food use among species. Cichlasoma dimerus and Satanoperca pappaterra showed a generalist diet, while Chaetobranchopsis australis and Crenicichla vittata consumed zooplankton and fish, respectively. Significant correlation between morphology and diet was not found, but C. australis differed from the others species in the upper mouth and longer gill rakers. The morphology data and food size segregated the cichlids into three groups. The first was comprised by C. australis, which has many and longer gill rakers and a more protractile mouth, the second by C. vittata, which have a larger and more-protruded mouth and the third by S. pappaterra and C. dimerus, with a smaller and lower mouth. The latter two groups have more widely spaced gill rakers and consumed larger food. Overall, our results showed different patterns of species grouping when considering morphological or diet data. The role of gonadotrophin-inhibitory hormone (Gn IH) in the inhibition of the reproductive axis has been well-established in birds and mammals. However, its role in other vertebrates, such as the teleost fish, remains controversial. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate whether Gn IH modulates the release of gonadotrophins and growth hormone ( GH) in the cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus. First, we partially sequenced the precursor polypeptide for Gn IH and identified three putative Gn IH peptides. Next, we analysed the expression of this precursor polypeptide via a polymerase chain reaction in the reproductive axis of both sexes. We found a high expression of the polypeptide in the hypothalamus and gonads of males. Immunocytochemistry allowed the observation of Gn IH-immunoreactive somata in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis and the nucleus olfacto-retinalis, with no differences between the sexes. Gn IH-immunoreactive fibres were present in all brain regions, with a high density in the nucleus lateralis tuberis and at both sides of the third ventricle. Finally, we performed in vitro studies on intact pituitary cultures to evaluate the effect of two doses (10−6 m and 10−8 m) of synthetic C. dimerus (cd-) LPQRFa-1 and LPQRFa-2 on the release of gonadotrophins and GH. We observed that cd- LPQRFa-1 decreased β-luteinising hormone ( LH) and β-follicle-stimulating hormone ( FSH) and also increased GH release to the culture medium. The release of β- FSH was increased only when it was stimulated with the higher cd- LPQRFa-2 dose. The results of the present study indicate that cd- LPQRFa-1, the cichlid fish Gn IH, inhibits β-LH and β- FSH release and stimulates GH release in intact pituitary cultures of C. dimerus. Here, we analyzed the recovery of the reproductive capability in male Cichlasoma dimerus after exposure to sublethal concentrations of 4- tert-octylphenol (OP), a demonstrated estrogenic chemical. Adult fish were exposed to 0, 30, 150 and 300 μg/L OP during 60 days and subsequently transferred to OP-free water for another 60 days. At 150 and 300 μg/L, absence of fertilized spawnings were recorded during the first 4 weeks following OP exposure, which could be explained by the impairment of testis architecture recorded at the highest OP concentrations. The restoration of the testicular organization began by day 14 in OP-free water, when the germinal epithelium re-started to proliferate. Testicular functionality was recovered by day 28, yielding fertilized eggs and viable F1 embryos. These results show that pathological features induced in the testes of C. dimerus by OP exposure are not permanent since fish recover their fertilization capacity after an adequate depuration period. Estrogenic chemicals are often detected in the aquatic environment and can negatively affect animal development and reproduction. In teleost fishes, the hormonal regulation during a critical period of larval development has a strong influence on gonadal sex differentiation; thus this process may be affected by the exposure to environmental estrogens. In this study, we first assessed the lethal acute toxicity of the natural estrogen 17β-estradiol (E 2 ) and the weaker estrogen mimics 4- tert -octylphenol (OP) and 4-nonylphenol (NP) on larval stages of the South American cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus . In a further experiment, we analyzed the effects of chronic waterborne exposure to E 2 and OP on gonad development and sex differentiation. Exposure to high concentrations of E 2 had a pronounced feminizing effect directing sex differentiation towards ovarian development, while testis development was inhibited at a lower, environmentally relevant concentration. Among OP-exposed fish, 15–38.5% of the males exhibited testicular oocytes (TOs), a commonly reported biomarker of estrogenic exposure. However, since TOs were also recorded in control males and the proportion of males with TOs was not significantly higher in OP treatments, their occurrence could not be attributed to OP exposure. In addition, TOs did not seem to impair male gonad development and functionality since normal spermatogenesis was observed in testes of OP-treated fish. These results indicate that E 2 occurring in the South American aquatic environment may affect male reproductive development and pose a risk for wild C. dimerus , especially under prolonged exposure, while the effects of weaker xenoestrogens such as OP would be negligible for gonad development in this species. Formation of the germinal epithelium and folliculogenesis during ovarian development in Cichlasoma dimerus were described at the light- and electron-microscopic levels. Prior to gonadal differentiation, germ cells and enveloping support cells reside within an inpocketing of the coelomic epithelium. Separation of the germinal and interstitial compartments of the gonad by a basement membrane is apparent from early gonadal development. Upon ovarian differentiation, oogonia undergo cyst-forming divisions leading to the formation of clusters of interconnected cystocytes that synchronously enter meiosis, becoming oocytes. At the pachytene step, each oocyte becomes individualized by cytoplasmic extensions of prefollicle cells, thereby developing as an ovarian follicle. Subsequent somatic reorganization leads to the formation of the ovarian lumen in a cephalo-caudal gradient. As a result, the germinal epithelium becomes internalized and lines the ovarian lumen. As defined by its origin from the germinal epithelium, the ovarian follicle is composed of an oocyte and the surrounding follicle cells. Thecal cells derived from the stroma encompass the basement membrane outside the follicle, thus forming a follicle complex. A common basement membrane is shared by the germinal epithelium and the follicle complex along a small portion of its surface. Diet of two cichlid species, Cichlasoma facetum (Jenyns, 1842), and Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus Hensel, 1870, was studied in Rodó Lake, an urban hypertrophic lake in Uruguay. The stomach contents from 192 individuals of C. facetum and 202 of G. rhabdotus, obtained through seasonal sampling in the year 2000, were analyzed. The occurrence frequency and the alimentary importance index of each food item were calculated for each season and size class in both species. Cichlasoma facetum fed upon insects (mainly chironomid larvae and pupae), fish (Cnesterodon decemmaculatus Jenyns, 1842), and vegetals (algae, periphyton and macrophytes debris); large individuals also fed upon the freshwater shrimp Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili, 1901. Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus consumed zooplankton (mainly copepods), vegetals (algae and detritus) and Chironomidae larvae in a lesser extent.

A first attempt to regulate the fishing activity while preserving the species and its habitats is presented for Hule lake. We intensively sampled the "guapote" between March 1996 and April 1997 using monofilament gill nets and a floating line, collecting 421 individuals. P. dovii biomass was relatively low; this species had a long life cycle (8-10 years) and the growth oscillation was low (C=0.3). Maximum life expectation was estimated at 12 years and the point of minimum growth coincided with the spawning that takes place between November and December. After spawning, P. dovii take around seven months to reach recruitment size (54.6 mm). The length of first maturation was 134 mm Lt, which indicates that this species is viable for reproduction soon after leaving the protection zones around the lagoon. "Guapote" sport fishing in the Hule lake is in equilibrium, the renewal rate is 80%. An increment in the actual fishery effort is not recommended, since it could seriously affect the natural renewal capacity of the stock.Un primer intento para regular la actividad de la pesca deportiva para el guapote lagunero, Parachromis dovii mediante los resultados de un programa de evaluación del recurso y del estudio de la dinámica poblacional de esta especie se presenta. La biomasa del guapote es relativamente baja. La especie presenta un ciclo de vida largo (8 a 10 años) con una baja oscilación en el crecimiento (C= 0.3), la expectativa de vida máxima estimada fue de 12 años y el punto de mínimo crecimiento coincidió con el período de desove (entre Noviembre y Diciembre). Luego del desove, P. dovii permanece en las áreas protegidas cerca de 7 meses hasta alcanzar la talla de reclutamiento (54.6 mm Lt). La longitud de primera maduración fue de 134 mm Lt, lo que indica que esta especie es apta para reproducirse poco tiempo después de haber abandonado las áreas de protección, ubicadas alrededor de la laguna. También se describen algunos aspectos de su biología. La pesca deportiva del guapote en la laguna Hule mantiene aún a la población en equilibrio, la tasa de renovación natural se estima en 80%, por lo que no se recomienda permitir un incremento en los niveles actuales de esfuerzo pesquero, dado que esto afectaría seriamente la capacidad de renovación natural de P. dovii.

The South American cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus presents a high breeding frequency and biparental care of the eggs and larvae. The male parental care period was divided in four different phases according to the developmental degree of the offspring: pre-spawning activity (MP, day 0), guarding eggs (ME, one day after fertilization (1 DAF)), guarding hatched larvae (MHL, 3 DAF), and guarding swimming larvae (MSL, 8 DAF). The aim of this study was to characterize male reproductive physiology by measuring steroid hormone plasma levels and analyzing testes cellular composition. Males exhibiting pre-spawning activity showed 8.4 times higher 11-ketotestosterone and 5.63 times higher testosterone levels than MHL. No differences were observed in estradiol and cortisol levels among the different phases. The cellular composition of the testes varied during the reproductive and parental care periods. Testes of MP were composed of 50% of spermatozoa, whereas spermatogonia type B and spermatocytes were predominant in the subsequent parental phases. A morphometric analysis of Leydig cells nuclear area revealed that MP and ME’s Leydig cells averaged 1.27 times larger than that those of MHL and MSL and was positively correlated with circulating 11-KT and T levels. Understanding the origin of biodiversity requires knowledge on the evolutionary processes that drive divergence and speciation, as well as on the processes constraining it. Intraspecific polymorphisms can provide insight into the mechanisms that generate and maintain phenotypic, behavioural and life history diversification, and can help us understand not only the processes that lead to speciation but also the processes that prevent local fixation of morphs. The 'desert cichlid' Herichtys minckleyi is a highly polymorphic species endemic to a biodiversity hotspot in northern Mexico, the Cuatro Ciénegas valley. This species is polymorphic in body shape and trophic apparatus, and eco-morphotypes coexist in small spring-fed lagoons across the valley. We investigated the genetic structure of these polymorphisms and their phylogeographic history by analysing the entire control region of the mitochondrial DNA and 10 nuclear microsatellite markers in several populations from different sites and morphs. We found two very divergent mitochondrial lineages that most likely predate the closing of the valley and are not associated with morphotypes or sites. One of these lineages is also found in the sister species Herichthys cyanoguttatus. Data from neutral microsatellite markers suggest that most lagoons or drainages constitute their own genetic cluster with sympatric eco-morphotypes forming panmictic populations. Alternative mechanisms such as phenotypic plasticity and a few loci controlled traits provide possible explanations for the sympatric coexistence of discrete nonoverlapping eco-morphotypes with apparent lack of barriers to gene flow within multiple lagoons and drainages. Endosulfan (ES) is an organochlorine pesticide widely used in agriculture despite its high toxicity towards non-target organisms such as fish. It has been demonstrated that ES can cause negative effects on aquatic animals, including disruption of hormonal systems. However, the alterations produced by this pesticide on the reproductive axis of fish prior to sexual maturity, as well as possible modes of action have hardly been studied. This study aimed at assessing the effect of waterborne exposure to the pesticide ES on the reproductive axis during sexual differentiation of juveniles of the South American freshwater cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus . No mortality was observed due to ES subchronic exposure (90 days post-fertilization). Exposure to ES did not affect body weight nor morphometric parameters, indicating that larvae nutritional state was not affected. Timing of sexual differentiation, gonadal morphology and sex ratio were likewise not altered by ES. However, ES acted as an endocrine disrupting chemical in this species as the morphometry of gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH) producing cells was altered. Exposure to ES altered nuclear area, cell area and nucleus/cytoplasm ratio of GnRH II neurons, and cell and nuclear area and diameter of GnRH III neurons. Interestingly, in our previous study, exposure before sex differentiation (30 day exposure) caused no alteration to GnRH II and III, and did alter GnRH I and FSH cells. These alterations could lead to changes in circulating hormone levels, especially when fish are exposed for prolonged periods, ultimately impairing reproductive fitness. C. dimerus juveniles can be an interesting biological model to perform toxicological studies with the intent to assess early disruption endpoints in the reproductive axis during development. Spatial heterogeneity in habitat conditions within a landscape should influence degree of movement of species between natural and artificial environments. For wetland landscapes, this functional connectivity was predicted to emerge from the influence of spatiotemporal patterns of depth on permeability of habitat edges and distance and directedness of cross-habitat dispersal. We quantified how connectivity between canals and marshes of the Florida Everglades varies with species and landscape patterns bordering canals by using radio telemetry to measure movement of a native (Florida largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus) and a nonnative species (Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus) common to canals. Both species moved similar distances inside canal networks, but Mayan cichlids dispersed outside of canals more frequently, at shallower conditions, and over greater distances than Florida largemouth bass. As topographic relief increased in marshes bordering canals, dispersal between these habitats decreased in distance and became more directed, with Florida largemouth bass sensitive to depth variability at a smaller spatial scale than Mayan cichlids. The way fish traits interact with submerged landscape structure to influence connectivity can serve as a basis for predicting potential impacts of artificial habitats that arise from dispersal outside their borders. High mortality rates have been observed in Teleost during early developmental stages, as well as great variations in reproductive tactics, which are related to adaptations towards environmental conditions and ecological niches for which different species have a specific response. The objective of this study was to describe reproductive tactics related to the survival of Cichlasoma orientale offspring, including aspects of body size, parental care, fecundity, oocyte size and spawning patterns. Samples were performed monthly from August 2011 to July 2013, in lentic and lotic environments at Curu river basin, Brazilian Northeastern semiarid region. Individual behavior (n=113) was observed underwater for over 50 hours by ad libitum sampling and focal-animal sampling. Collected individuals (males n=185, females n=95) were evaluated regarding the standard length, batch fecundity, oocyte size and spawning pattern. In females with mature ovaries, oocyte groups at different developmental stages were observed, these cells were counted and measured, and fecundity was estimated by the gravimetric method. Our results showed that the species displayed biparental care behavior and, on average, males were larger than females. Based on 46 ovaries, the average batch fecundity was 2 052 ± 849 (range: 254-3 389). Standard length and batch fecundity were positively correlated, but no correlation was found between oocyte size and standard length. The maximum diameter observed in the most developed oocytes was 1.8mm. The observed distribution of oocyte size classes indicated synchronous oocyte development in three groups: previtellogenic, vitellogenic and mature, showing that C. orientale is a multiple spawner. Differences in the amount of oocytes among the three groups were observed, with the most developed group showing the smallest number of oocytes. The combination of low fecundity and large egg size is characteristic of demersal spawners due to a greater environmental stability. Multiple spawning increases chances of survival mainly because of increased fecundity per reproductive season, and the reduced competition among the offspring. We concluded that C. orientale makes a heavy investment in larval survival in detriment of the offspring number. The number and diversity of source populations may influence the genetic diversity of newly introduced populations and affect the likelihood of their establishment and spread. We used the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene and nuclear microsatellite loci to identify the sources of a successful invader in southern Florida, USA, Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Mayan cichlid). Our cytochrome b data supported an introduction from Guatemala, while our microsatellite data suggested movement of Mayan Cichlids from the upper Yucatán Peninsula to Guatemala and introductions from Guatemala and Belize to Florida. The mismatch between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes suggests admixture of a female lineage from Guatemala, where all individuals were fixed for the mitochondrial haplotype found in the introduced population, and a more diverse but also relatively small number of individuals from Belize. The Florida cytochrome b haplotype appears to be absent from Belize (0 out of 136 fish screened from Belize had this haplotype). Genetic structure within the Florida population was minimal, indicating a panmictic population, while Mexican and Central American samples displayed more genetic subdivision. Individuals from the Upper Yucatán Peninsula and the Petén region of Guatemala were more genetically similar to each other than to fish from nearby sites and movement of Mayan Cichlids between these regions occurred thousands of generations ago, suggestive of pre-Columbian human transportation of Mayan Cichlids through this region. Mayan Cichlids present a rare example of cytonuclear disequilibrium and reduced genetic diversity in the introduced population that persists more than 30 years (at least 7–8 generations) after introduction. We suggest that hybridization occurred in ornamental fish farms in Florida and may contribute their establishment in the novel habitat. The Mexican cichlid Cichlasoma beani is currently exploited regionally as food and can be commercialized in the aquarium trade. Natural populations of C. beani may already be negatively affected by anthropogenic alteration of the areas in which it is distributed. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect on growth, survival, and condition of C. beani cultured in three stocking densities: three ( D3), six ( D6), and nine ( D9) fish per each 40 L tank. At the end of a 6-wk trial the fish cultured in D3 were longer, heavier, and grew faster than the rest of the treatments but their survival was the lowest compared to D6 and D9. Environmental factors and social interactions are known to affect somatic growth and reproduction in teleost fish. It has been described for Cichlasoma dimerus that only one pair is formed under a wide range of laboratory conditions. However, this was not observed in tanks composed of three males and three females, where multiple pair formation occurred. Thus, our objective was to evaluate somatic growth and reproductive performance in C. dimerus under this particular condition, in which more than one pair is expected to be formed. A clear sexual growth dimorphism, with males growing faster than females, and multiple pair formation, sometimes simultaneously, were observed. Both features were absent in previous studies with other aquaria structures. Additionally, there was a significant association between reproductive events and body size, where the bigger the fish, both male and female, the higher the number of reproductive events. Despite the sexual growth dimorphism, no differences were observed between males and females in IGF-I and GHR2 mRNA levels. The results obtained for this social species show a high inter-individual variability in the aquaria in regard to reproductive success and growth. This may have implications on experimental design, where a low level of heterogeneity between fish is desirable. The Mexican cichlid, Cichlasoma beani has potential to be a candidate for the aquarium trade and the food industry. However, currently there are no studies regarding the effect of environmental factors on the species in culture conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of C. beani to be maintained in cultured conditions. Additionally, the fish were exposed to different temperatures to examine the effect of temperature on growth, condition and survival of cultured juveniles in 26, 28 and 30°C, for six weeks in recirculation systems. Fish were fed 2.4 mm pellets (40% protein, 15% fat) at a ration rate of 5% body weight per day (dry weight food: wet weight fish). An aggressive behavior in all treatments led to lowered survival, making it impossible to conclude that temperature had an effect on the recorded variables. However the results showed a tendency that indicated the final weight and specific growth rate at 30°C was greater than in 26 and 28°C, perhaps due to a better metabolism and nutrient assimilation. Stress response involves various physiological changes, including alteration in hematological parameters closely related to the response of fish to the environment. 4- tert-octylphenol (OP) is one of the worldwide-used surfactants and can pollute the aquatic environment, both marine and freshwater. Previous studies have already shown estrogenic effects of this compound in various wildlife species, e.g., it can disrupt the reproductive system of males organisms including fish. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects caused by sublethal concentrations of OP on hematological parameters as biomarkers to assess environmental stress. Adult males and females of Cichlasoma dimerus were exposed to waterborne OP during 60 days under semistatic conditions. Experimental groups consisted of control (ethanol 0.005 %), OP 150, and OP 300 μg/L. OP caused hemodynamic stress in C. dimerus, which lead to normochromic and normocytic anemia, as well as erythrocytic pathologies such as a significant increase in erythroblasts and amitotic erythrocytes. The purpose of this study was to test polyculture of Nile tilapia and the native Mayan cichlid, as an alternative production method of tilapia. The experiment had a 2×4 factorial design: the first factor was the population of tilapia (mixed-sex and 95% males) and the second factor was the proportion of Nile tilapia: Mayan cichlid (3:1, 5:1, 7:1 and 1:0). Proportion of 1:0 was tilapia monoculture. At stocking, tilapias were 11weeks old and weighed 24.0g and Mayan cichlids weighed 5.0g. Recirculating water systems were used, with 24 fiberglass tanks 1m3 with permanent water flow (7Lmin−1) and aeration. Each treatment had 3 replicates distributed randomly, and 24 fish were introduced in each tank (30fishm−3). The experiment lasted 21weeks, until tilapia reached marketable size. Fish were fed with extruded formulated diets for tilapia (40% and 30% crude protein). Daily feeding rate was restricted to between 4% and 1.8% of the fish biomass. Temperature, DO and pH (28.0±1.1°C, 5.2±1.2mgL−1 and 7.9±0.2) were within the appropriate ranges for growth, and TAN, nitrites and total alkalinity (0.29±0.22mgL−1, 0.04±0.03mgL−1 and 238±27mgL−1) were within safe ranges. Average survival was high (99%) and no differences were found between populations and among proportions. Nile tilapia Stirling strain showed early (45g after 3 experimental weeks) sexual maturation and growth dimorphism. Significantly better total yield, FCR and final tilapia body weight were obtained in the 95% male population (9.26kgm−3, 1.39 and 383g) than in the mixed-sex population (7.70kgm−3, 1.52 and 315g). The presence of the Mayan cichlid did not affect tilapia performance. The final weight of Mayan cichlid was significantly higher in the mixed-sex tilapia population (45.9g) than in the 95% male population (34.4g). Mayan cichlid growth was inversely proportional to its density, with final weights of 45.5g, 39.0g and 34.3g (7:1>5:1>3:1). The differences in Mayan cichlid growth are associated with intraspecific competition for available tilapia larvae. Mouth brooding tilapia females with eggs or larvae were observed in both tilapia populations and in all proportions. When fish were weighed some tilapia females released their larvae in the tanks, and both Mayan cichlid and tilapia males were observed preying on them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ontogeny of the digestive tract in Cichlasoma urophthalmus was studied by means of optical microscopy from hatching to 30 days post-hatching (dph; 855 degree days, dd). The development of the digestive system in this precocial species was a very intense and asynchronous process, which proceeded from both distal ends interiorly. At hatching, the digestive tract consisted of a straight tube with a smooth lumen dorsally attached to the yolk-sac. The digestive accessory glands were already differentiated and eosinophilic zymogen granules were visible in the exocrine pancreas. At the onset of exogenous feeding between 5 and 6 dph (142.5-171.0 cumulative thermal units, CTU), the buccopharynx, oesophagus, intestine, liver and pancreas were almost completely differentiated, with the exception of the gastric stomach that completed its differentiation between 11 and 14 dph (313.5-399.0 CTU). The development of gastric glands at 14 dph and the differentiation of the stomach in the fundic, cardiac and pyloric regions at 19 dph (541.5 CTU) were the last major events in digestive tract development and designated the onset of the juvenile period. Remnants of yolk were still detected until 16 dph (456.0 CTU), indicating a long period of mixed nutrition that lasted between 10 and 11 days (285.0-313.5 CTU). The results of the organogenesis of larvae complement previous data on the functionality of the digestive system and represent a useful tool for establishing the functional systemic capabilities and physiological requirements of larvae to ensure optimal welfare and growth under aquaculture conditions, which might be useful for improving current larval rearing practices for this cichlid species. Abstract: Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and orexin are neuropeptides involved in the regulation of feeding in vertebrates. In this study we determined the NPY and orexin mRNA tissue expression and their immunoreactivity distribution in both preoptic area and hypothalamus, regions involved in the regulation of feeding behavior. Both peptides presented a wide expression in all tissues examined. The NPY-immunoreactive (ir) cells were localized in the ventral nucleus posterioris periventricularis (NPPv) and numerous ir-NPY fibers were found in the nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT), the nucleus recess lateralis (NRL) and the neurohypophysis. Ir-orexin cells were observed in the NPPv, dorsal NLT, ventral NLT, lateral NLT (NLTl) and the lateral NRL. Ir-orexin fibers were widespread distributed along all the hypothalamus, especially in the NLTl. Additionally, we observed the presence of ir-orexin immunostaining in adenohypophyseal cells, especially in somatotroph cells and the presence of a few ir-orexin-A fibers in the neurohypophysis. In conclusion, both peptides have an ubiquitous mRNA tissue expression and are similarly distributed in the hypothalamus and preoptic area of Cichlasoma dimerus. The presence of ir-orexin in adenohypohyseal cells and the presence of ir-orexin and NPY fibers in the neurohypophysis suggest that both peptides may play an important neuroendocrine role in anterior pituitary.
