Abstract

The aim of this anthology is to present current educational research that draws attention to didactics, more specifically to the need for didactic research in health-related subject areas. The anthology is the result of work within the Learning and Interaction research group at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Oslo Metropolitan University and also includes contributions from partners at University College Copenhagen and Rigshospitalet Copenhagen. The anthology analyzes an educational experiment in which the transition between education and professional practice is the main theme. Furthermore, it explores reflections on key concepts and discussions within subject didactics, such as whether there is too much practical training in nursing education, complexity in clinical work and health communication. Additional themes addressed in the book inlude various teaching activities, such as the use of technology and learning assistants, and local curricula for learning and assessment in practical studies., Målet med denne antologien er å presentere aktuell pedagogisk forskning for å rette oppmerksomhet mot didaktikk, mer spesifikt mot behovet for fagdidaktisk forskning i helsefagene. Antologien er utarbeidet innenfor forskningsgruppen Læring og samhandling ved Fakultet for helsevitenskap ved OsloMet – storbyuniversitetet. Vi har også inkludert samarbeidspartnere fra Københavns Professionshøjskole og Rigshospitalet København. Antologien tar for seg et utdanningseksperiment hvor overgangen mellom utdanning og yrke er hovedtema. Videre tar den for seg refleksjoner over sentrale begreper og diskusjoner innenfor fagdidaktikk, som om det er for mye praksis i sykepleierutdanningen, kompleksitet i klinisk arbeid og helsekommunikasjon. Ulike undervisningsaktiviteter som bruk av teknologi og læringsassistenter er et tema blir behandlet, og til slutt lokale læreplaner for læring og vurdering i praksisstudier.

11. Diminishing pain stigma: patient perceptions of encounters with interprofessional teams in biopsychosocial pain rehabilitation

Abstract

To explore how patients in biopsychosocial pain rehabilitation perceive encounters with interprofessional teams. The focus of this article is to explore how interactions can perpetuate or diminish chronic pain stigma.An ethnographic approach was applied to the study. Participant observation of interprofessional encounters and clinical encounters in a pain rehabilitation ward was undertaken in 2016 (19 weeks). Interviews with 12 professionals and seven patients were conducted. Data were analysed in an abductive process using thematic analysis.The patients perceived their encounters with interprofessional teams as supportive, with implications for pain stigma. This is presented as two themes: (1) being seen as credible, involving patients being believed in and a concept of being overactive at the expense of their own health, and (2) being helped to see their situation in a new light, which involves enthusiasm about changing and challenging views in a process with professionals who were supportive and united across professions.Interprofessional biopsychosocial pain rehabilitation may be an intervention that can diminish internalised stigma in patients suffering from chronic pain. The study contributes to increased understanding of patient perceptions of positive encounters with professionals during a learning process in rehabilitation and of the imbued influence on power relations. This appears to be fundamental to diminishing pain stigma, as the occurrence of stigma is dependent on differences in power.KEY MESSAGESInterprofessional biopsychosocial pain rehabilitation can be an intervention for diminishing internalised pain stigma in patients.Knowledge on how encounters with professionals induce personal learning processes among people with chronic pain.

Abstract

Ny bok om viktigheten av veiledning blant helsepersonell. Helsemessige utfordringer knyttet til livsstil, sykdom og skade tilsier at pedagogisk virksomhet blant helsepersonell må styrkes. Helseveiledning baseres på fagkunnskap, pedagogisk og kommunikativ kompetanse, og skal gjenspeile en pasientrettet tilnærming. I boken konkretiseres det hvordan helseveiledning kan tilpasses ulike målgrupper, hensikter og sammenhenger i spesialist- og kommunehelse- tjenesten. Selv om det primært relateres til individ og grupper, trekkes også et samfunnsmessig perspektiv inn. Boken belyser utfordringer og muligheter til fagutvikling og forskning innen dette viktige området. Boken henvender seg til masterstudenter i sykepleie og andre helsefag, men kan også brukes på bachelornivå og er svært relevant for yrkesutøvere innen helsetjeneste.

Abstract

Aim: The aim was to explore how nurse mentors experience the assessment of nursing students in clinical placements at hospitals and in municipal health care. Design: The study is qualitative with an explorative and descriptive design. Methods: Based on an interview guide, we conducted 19 individual qualitative interviews and four focus group interviews with nurse mentors from various levels and fields of nursing education at a Norwegian university. Results: Feedback in and on action was an integrated part of the formative assessment. In the summative assessment, where the university lecturer also participates, the nurse mentors perceived their role as passive. A disturbing finding was that divergent views on the student's competence sometimes occurred in these situations, thus challenging the credibility of the student assessment. Perceptions of nursing values and concerns embedded in nursing practice as collective criteria appear to have an impact on the mentors' assessment of the nursing students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Psykisk helse skapes der mennesker lever. For ungdom er skolen i denne sammenheng en viktig arena. Utbredelsen av psykiske problemer hos unge vekker grunn til bekymring, og det har lenge vært fokus på at forebyggende innsats i skolen er viktig. Likevel er psykisk helse ikke på læreplanen i grunnskolen og videregående skole, og det eksisterer liten kunnskap om hvordan lærere forholder seg til elevenes psykiske helse. Artikkelen bygger på fire kvalitative intervjuer med lærere hvor to var fra ungdomsskole og to fra videregående skole. Sentrale funn i studien viser hvordan lærere bidrar til å fremme psykisk helse når de tilrettelegger for gode relasjoner, trivsel og læring i klasserommet. Lærerne uttrykte ansvar for å «se» elevene og «fange opp» dem som slet med problemer. Videre ble helsesøster og rådgiver ansett som viktige støttespillere for å løse utfordringer og dele bekymringer hos elevene. Det ble imidlertid pekt på utfordringer knyttet til elevenes psykiske helse som krevde intervensjoner utover hva disse hadde kapasitet eller kompetanse til å håndtere

Abstract

Background: Empathy is of great importance in nursing, as it helps us to see and meet the needs of patients and hence to care for patients in an appropriate way. Therefore, it is of great importance that nursing students and nurses develop their ability to empathize. Objective: The study aimed at gaining knowledge on what characterizes undergraduate nursing students’ ability to empathize with patients during their first practice in a nursing home. In addition, the aim of the study was to investigate what nursing students think is important with regard to upholding their ability to empathize with patients in a professional way. Research design: This research has a phenomenological and hermeneutic design, based on qualitative interviews. Participants and research context: A total of 11 undergraduate nursing students participated in interviews during or right after their first practice in a nursing home. Ethical considerations: Norwegian Social Science Data Services approved the study. Participants were informed that their participation was voluntary. The participants were also assured confidentiality, and they were informed that they could withdraw from the study at any time, without providing any reasons. Findings: What the findings show is that affective empathy is strong among undergraduate nursing students in their first practice. They think the emotions are important to be able to empathize, and they are afraid of becoming indifferent. At the same time, they are afraid that the feelings will hinder them from acting in a professional manner. Discussion: The findings are discussed in light of previous theories on empathy, and especially perspectives on empathy, emotions, and morality. Conclusion: Affective empathy seems to be strong among nursing students, and this may be of great importance to be sensitive to patients’ well-being. This article is based on qualitative in-depth interviews with 11 first-year students, and the research questions were: What characterizes situations in a nursing home that evoke strong emotional reactions in first-year students? What is the learning potential of these experiences? Findings show that facing emotionally challenging situations during their first clinical placement in nursing education aroused strong feelings and commitment among the students. The students tried, however, to find ways to handle emotionally challenging situations both with support in scientific literature, as well as from experience. Nurses were important role models, but could also exemplify characteristics of less empathic behaviour. Developing 'mature empathy' requires emotional work so that the students learn to adapt themselves to what will be demanded of them as professional nurses. The findings of this and other studies should alert nurses as well as teachers to the importance of helping students develop empathy as part of their learning trajectory in nursing education. Abstract

Bakgrunn: Forskning og teknologi er i økende grad blitt en del av vår hverdag, som medfører at kunnskap får en mer abstrakt og symbolsk form. Det stilles derved særegne krav til faglig oppdatering blant sykepleiere. Hensikt: Studiens hensikt er å få innsikt i hva som kjennetegner fagutviklingssykepleierens formidlende og tilretteleggende virksomhet mellom forskning og klinisk praksis. Metode: Studien er eksplorerende, og er utført som ledd i oppfølging av funn i ProLearn studien ved Universitetet i Oslo. Fem fagutviklingssykepleiere fra to ulike sykehus ble forespurt, og det ble utført kvalitative intervjuer med utgangspunkt i en intervjuguide. Analysen hadde likhetstrekk med en hermeneutisk prosess, hvor forskningsspørsmålet var utgangspunkt for en gjentagende gjennomlesning av et helhetlig datamateriale mot en mer fortolkende fremstilling. Resultater: Studien tyder på at fagutviklingssykepleieren har en viktig rolle som brobygger mellom forskning og klinisk praksis. Ved å tilrettelegge infrastrukturer for læring prøver våre informanter både å stimulere til et dynamisk forhold til kunnskap, og fremme kunnskapsbasering av det daglige arbeidet. Konklusjon: Til tross for et sterkt engasjement og ansvar for kunnskap, er det knyttet store pedagogiske og administrative utfordringer til fagutviklingssykepleierens rolle.
