The present research sought to test the overarching hypothesis that the happiest people, that is, people with the highest level of psychological well-being, are those (1) who experience the highest levels of passion (and especially harmonious passion) in several enjoyable everyday life activities, and (2) who display higher levels of autonomous regulation for less enjoyable activities such as chores and duties. Results of two studies (Study 1, N = 260; Study 2, N = 392) provided support for this hypothesis. Furthermore, results from three additional studies (Study 3, N = 251; Study 4, N = 526; Study 5, N = 255) showed that positive affect represents the key mediating processes between harmonious passion and autonomous regulation on the one hand and psychological well-being on the other. Conversely, negative affect mediated the negative relationship between obsessive passion and controlled regulation and well-being. Finally, Studies 4 and 5 also showed that the autonomous global orientation (Guay et al., 2003) is a major determinant of harmonious passion and autonomous regulation for engaging in chores and duties, whereas the controlled global orientation serves as a determinant of obsessive passion and controlled regulation. This research represents a significant advancement in integrating the perspectives of passion, self-regulation, and affect, contributing to our understanding of how individuals' engagement in life activities influences their psychological well-being. One of the main responsibilities of universities for their students, researchers, and society is to teach scientific integrity. Over the years, many universities—including RWTH Aachen University—have developed modules to impart the rules of good scientific practice. The current case study outlines the "Scientific Integrity" online course of RWTH Aachen University that has been offered to all master's students starting in October 2020; it explains to what extent the topic of scientific integrity meets genuine interest among students. Based on the online questionnaires that students were asked to fill out before starting the course (Q1) and after completing the course (Q2), it was verified that the implemented course achieved a satisfactory, but expandable acceptance. 57% of study participants initially (Q1) strongly affirmed to be interested in the topic; said percentage increased to 65.3% at the end of the course (Q2). While at the time of Q1 most students admitted that they would not take the course if it were voluntary, the majority of study participants came to the opposite conclusion after the course (Q2). Objective: The present study set out to investigate how all the members, including children, of nuclear US families conceptualize a fair division of household labor. Background: The majority of the literature has focused on how couples perceive their family's division of labor. However, for many households, children are also present and potentially involved in the division of household chores. Thus there is a need to investigate how the whole family, rather than just couples, perceive and understand the fairness of the family's division of labor. Methods: This study employed thematic analysis of in‐depth interviews with all family members of nine primarily White US middle‐class families (N = 33). Results: This study found two main themes: (1) the kids don't do enough and that's not fair, and (2) if we agree and are happy, then it's fair. The findings highlight how children's involvement is considered in fairness evaluations, whereas a specific amount of labor is often considered less important than emotional satisfaction and agreement. Conclusion: Children are seen as important actors in conceptualizing a fair division of labor. Generational differences highlighted distinct understandings about the possibility of equality suggesting that the role of the (im)possibility of a type of division may result in other factors being used to evaluate whether a division is fair. Implications: Future studies on fairness perceptions should include both children's perceptions and expectations for their involvement by both children and parents, to better understand how family's approach conceptualizing the division of their household's labor. Introduction: This article presents the findings of an experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of coercive and assertive communication on children’s emotional responses and behavioral tendencies within parent–child interactions. Methods: The study tested four hypotheses related to children’s feelings, personalization bias, the need to express their point of view, and the desire to retreat to their room alone. Short audio stimuli recorded by a female assistant, representing a mother addressing her child, were utilized to create five different communication situations. The experimental procedure involved participants listening to the audio stimuli and answering related questions. The study included 123 participants between the ages of 9 and 13, with an equal gender distribution. Results: The results of One-Way ANOVA tests indicated significant differences among the four types of communication in terms of unpleasant feelings, personalization bias, listening to a personal point of view, and retreating into a personal room. The findings suggest that coercive communication elicited more negative emotional responses and stronger tendencies toward personalization bias, expressing personal opinions, and seeking solitude compared to assertive communication. Discussion: The implications of these findings highlight the importance of promoting positive and respectful communication strategies in parent–child relationships to foster children’s emotional well-being and healthy behavioral development. Objective: To review the economic and social importance of donkeys and mules and their current situation in Mexico. Design/Methodology/Approach: Donkeys and mules have contributed to human development for thousands of years, mainly as pack animals, helping in the development of trade and the transportation of people. These strong, hardy, and long-lived animals can easily adapt to different environmental conditions, are resistant to diseases, and tolerate heavier loads than horses. Study Limitations/Implications: These animals are mainly found in developing countries, where they are used for transportation, as beasts of burden, and for agricultural work. Unfortunately, their welfare is threatened as their basic needs (e.g., feeding, health, and housing) are not met, despite their undeniable usefulness, especially in rural conditions. Findings/Conclusions: Donkeys and mules have played a major role and made an undeniable contribution to human civilizations. We study the problem of allocating divisible bads (chores) among multiple agents with additive utilities when monetary transfers are not allowed. The competitive rule is known for its remarkable fairness and efficiency properties in the case of goods. This rule was extended to chores by Bogomolnaia, Moulin, Sandomirskiy, and Yanovskaya. For both goods and chores, the rule produces Pareto optimal and envy-free allocations. In the case of goods, the outcome of the competitive rule can be easily computed. Competitive allocations solve the Eisenberg-Gale convex program; hence the outcome is unique and can be approximately found by standard gradient methods. An exact algorithm that runs in polynomial time in the number of agents and goods was given by Orlin. In the case of chores, the competitive rule does not solve any convex optimization problem; instead, competitive allocations correspond to local minima, local maxima, and saddle points of the Nash social welfare on the Pareto frontier of the set of feasible utilities. The Pareto frontier may contain many such points and, consequently, the outcome of the competitive rule is no longer unique. In this paper, we show that all the outcomes of the competitive rule for chores can be computed in strongly polynomial time if either the number of agents or the number of chores is fixed. The approach is based on a combination of three ideas: all consumption graphs of Pareto optimal allocations can be listed in polynomial time; for a given consumption graph, a candidate for a competitive utility profile can be constructed via an explicit formula; each candidate can be checked for competitiveness and the allocation can be reconstructed using a maximum flow computation. Our algorithm immediately gives an approximately-fair allocation of indivisible chores by the rounding technique of Barman and Krishnamurthy. Robotic manipulation requires object pose knowledge for the objects of interest. In order to perform typical household chores, a robot needs to be able to estimate 6D poses for objects such as water glasses or salad bowls. This is especially difficult for glass objects, as for these, depth data are mostly disturbed, and in RGB images, occluded objects are still visible. Thus, in this paper, we propose to redefine the ground-truth for training RGB-based pose estimators in two ways: (a) we apply a transparency-aware multisegmentation, in which an image pixel can belong to more than one object, and (b) we use transparency-aware bounding boxes, which always enclose whole objects, even if parts of an object are formally occluded by another object. The latter approach ensures that the size and scale of an object remain more consistent across different images. We train our pose estimator, which was originally designed for opaque objects, with three different ground-truth types on the ClearPose dataset. Just by changing the training data to our transparency-aware segmentation, with no additional glass-specific feature changes in the estimator, the ADD-S AUC value increases by 4.3%. We initiate the work on maximin share (MMS) fair allocation of m indivisible chores to n agents using only their ordinal preferences, from both algorithmic and mechanism design perspectives. The previous best-known approximation ratio using ordinal preferences is 2 - 1 / n by Aziz et al. [AAAI 2017]. We improve this result by giving a deterministic 5/3-approximation algorithm that determines an allocation sequence of agents, according to which items are allocated one by one. By a tighter analysis, we show that for n = 2 and 3, our algorithm achieves better approximation ratios, and is actually optimal. We also consider the setting with strategic agents, where agents may misreport their preferences to manipulate the outcome. We first provide a strategyproof O (log (m / n)) -approximation consecutive picking algorithm, and then improve the approximation ratio to O (log n) by a randomized algorithm. Both algorithms only use the ordinal preferences of agents. Our results uncover some interesting contrasts between the approximation ratios achieved for chores versus goods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we tested a model connecting the spouses' assessment of the division of domestic labour and their marital satisfaction. The suggested model was tested in a dyadic study using a sample of heterosexual couples living in Israel and having at least one child (n = 479). The spouses assessed the division of domestic labour in four domains: traditionally feminine chores, traditionally masculine chores, childcare, and emotion work. Husbands who reported doing fewer traditionally feminine chores and less emotion work were more satisfied with their marriage. Wives who reported doing fewer traditionally masculine chores and less childcare and emotion work were more satisfied with their marriage. Simultaneously, husbands who reported doing fewer masculine chores and less emotion work tended to have wives with higher levels of marital satisfaction. Wives who reported doing fewer feminine chores and less emotion work tended to have husbands with higher levels of marital satisfaction. Husbands and wives reported similar levels of marital satisfaction, and their levels of marital satisfaction were strongly positively correlated. The obtained results indicated the existence of two mechanisms connecting the division of domestic labour to marital satisfaction: an egoistic mechanism and the gratitude mechanism. In Zambia, as well as many other African and non-Western cultures, the extent and kind of children's chores may contribute to their learning, yet often also conflict with their schooling. In the moderation analysis we present in this manuscript, we aimed to explore the interactive effects of schooling and chores on children's mathematics performance at different levels of math knowledge and computational skill, taking into account how the assessment questions were presented. The sample consisted of 1,535 children (719 girls) living in rural and peri-urban communities in Zambia who were administered the Zambia Achievement Test (ZAT). We categorized the 60 items of the ZAT by their targeted content knowledge, sizes of the numbers involved, and forms of representation. Our results showed that chores supported the development of very basic mathematics skills and knowledge in children who had less schooling, but also significantly lowered the performance of students who were in school once their school attendance rose above certain levels. Moreover, this interaction between chores and school attendance was observed predominantly in girls, with a lesser effect of chores on boys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wherever there is group life, there has been a social division of labor and resource allocation, since ancient times. Examples include ant colonies, bee colonies, and wolf colonies. Different roles are responsible for different tasks. The same is true of human beings. Human beings are the largest social group in nature, among whom there are intricate social networks and interest networks between individuals. In such a complex relationship, how do decision makers allocate resources or tasks to individuals in a fair way? This is a topic worthy of further study. In recent decades, fair allocation has been at the core of research in economics, mathematics and other fields. The fair allocation problem is to assign a set of items to a set of agents so that each agent's allocation is as fair as possible to satisfy each agent. The fairness measurements followed in current research include envy-freeness, proportionality, equitability, maximin share fairness, competitive equilibrium, maximum Nash social diswelfare, and so on. In this paper, the main concern is the allocation of chores. We discuss this problem in two parts: divisible and indivisible. We comprehensively review the existing results, algorithms, and approximations that meet various fairness criteria in chronological order. The relevant results of achieving fairness and efficiency are also discussed. In addition, we propose some open questions and future research directions for this problem based on existing research. Objective: To interpret the narratives derived from the experiences of the use of free and leisure time in families of the Colombo-British School. Methodology: The research approach was qualitative. The participants were parents, teachers and directors of the institution. Results: Free time, leisure and education are interdependent and generate creativity environments based on experiences of pleasure. Free and leisure time in families is related to care and health. This produces feelings of attachment and socio-familial bonding. Conclusion: Free and leisure time are two concepts linked and integrated. The former is broader and contains the latter. Free time is the time people have available, in which they do not carry out work activities, educational responsibilities or domestic chores. The present research examined: (a) the co-development of chores and effortful control, and (b) the prospective impact of effortful control development (i.e., initial levels and the trajectory of effortful control from late childhood through adolescence) on work outcomes in young adulthood. We used data from a longitudinal study of 674 Mexican-origin youth assessed at ages 10, 12, 14, 16, and 19. We found no evidence of co-developmental associations between chores and effortful control, but we found that higher initial levels of effortful control (age 10) predicted working-student status, less job stress, and better job fit, and steeper increases in effortful control from age 10 to 16 predicted higher job satisfaction and job autonomy in young adulthood (age 19).

This article presents the review of L’Indigénat. Genèses dans l’empire français. Pratiques en Nouvelle-Calédonie. This substantial and rigorous work, talking about a complex subject, is written by Isabelle Merle and Adrian Muckle, eminent specialists in the colonial history of Oceania. While in France opinion seems to prevail over reflection and critical thinking, the authors suggest a fine analysis of the indigénat. This « exception in law », which makes ordinary something arbitrary, falls at the same time under the history of law, the political history and more particularly under the social history.

Cake cutting is a classic fair division problem, with the cake serving as a metaphor for a heterogeneous divisible resource. Recently, it was shown that for any number of players with arbitrary preferences over a cake, it is possible to partition the players into groups of any desired size and divide the cake among the groups so that each group receives a single contiguous piece and every player is envy-free. For two groups, we characterize the group sizes for which such an assignment can be computed by a finite algorithm, showing that the task is possible exactly when one of the groups is a singleton. The standard approach for collecting sociodemographic data about children in developing countries is to elicit information from adults. While using proxy respondents is appropriate for very young children or for questions likely beyond children's knowledge, it is less clear that it is better for older children and topics within their experience. Several arguments can be made that children could provide better or equally valid information on their activities than proxy respondents. We explore this question in the context of children's work on environmental chores in rural Tanzania, using data that include parallel questions to children ages 10–17 and to proxy respondents about those children. Using a strengths‐based approach, this study investigated whether Black adolescents' provision of different types of support to family (chores, childcare, emotional, financial support) was associated with their educational outcomes (school engagement, grades, suspensions), and whether these associations differed by household income levels. The study used the nationally representative National Survey of American Life Adolescent Supplement data (N = 1170, 52% Female, ages of 13–17). Supporting the family was associated with both educational success and risk, depending on the type of support and household socioeconomic resource levels. Across income groups, providing emotional support was associated with greater school engagement. Among low‐income youth only, completei chores was associated with higher school engagement and grades, whereas providing childcare was associated with lower grades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This chapter would have liked to invite its readers on an exciting but breath-taking journey through the historical landscapes of international law, since 'time immemorial' a male-centred and, until the 1990s, almost exclusively male intellectual tradition and professional practice – at least in the eyes of the currently dominating historiography. Helas, the ambition had to be downscaled into a few rapid zooms, touristic snapshots in an impressionistic mode, on seven contexts in time and space in a hasty timeline from the eighteenth century to 2021. They reflect, merely as examples, women's status in international law in diverse political, social and legal transformations or crisis. Some are representing moments of codification or the break-through of certain interpretations of women's rights. Others are selected for their role in enabling women's participation in decision-making or entry to international legal positions, or because they provide an example of women's international activism for women's rights. All of them might have preceded, followed, or in fact themselves constituted 'Grotian Moments' for 'women's rights' – did they, and if not, why? Should they have? The problem of finding envy-free allocations of indivisible goods cannot always be solved; therefore, it is common to study some relaxations such as envy-free up to one good (EF1) and envy-free up to any positively valued good (EFX). Another property of interest for the efficiency of an allocation is the Pareto Optimality (PO). Under additive utility functions for goods, it is possible to find EF1 and PO allocations using the Nash social welfare. However, finding an allocation that maximizes the Nash social welfare is a computationally costly problem. Maximizing the utilitarian social welfare subject to EF1 constraints is an NP-complete problem for the case where three or more agents participate. In this work, we propose a restricted case of additive utility functions called generalized binary utility functions. The proposed utilities are a generalization of binary and identical utilities simultaneously. In this scenario, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that maximizes the utilitarian social welfare and, at the same time, produces an EF1 and PO allocation for goods as well as for chores. Throughout his Faerie Queene , Edmund Spenser depicts himself as a "poet magus" who can peer behind the veil of Nature in order to discover a "secret teaching" of ethical and political virtue that he will impart to his readers. His readers are thus tasked with the chore of reforming the fallen world through the creation of an empire under Elizabeth. However, in "The Two Cantos of Mutabilitie," Spenser seems to relinquish this vision. Indeed, Mutabilitie, on one level serves as a mirroring figure of Spenser's own ambitions. Mutabilitie's claims for the fragility and mutability of (temporal) existence are prefigured throughout The Faerie Queene , but in "The Two Cantos," they take center stage. Spenser's depiction of Nature's triumph over Mutabilitie provides a lesson for Spenser himself, and he appears to reject his bombastic claims of knowledge as well as his projected imperial vision for a position of humble supplication before God, whose Providence is the ultimately the most powerful force in The Faerie Queene. Mechanisms supporting global learning and global citizenship continue to be incorporated as curricular and co-curricular components of undergraduate education in the United States. Global learning promotes critical thinking and problem-solving and intercultural competency -- skills that studies find are highly prized among employers. However, few studies have investigated faculty and student perceptions of global learning where it has been implemented in core educational curricula. In this article, the authors present findings from a qualitative study of a general education global learning curricular requirement at a liberal arts university in the southeastern US. Utilizing student focus groups and faculty interviews, the authors conclude that, while attitudes of global learning are high and it is deemed an important part of education by both students and faculty, the institutional barriers and challenges to teaching and learning in this area are difficult to overcome. Sociologists are often questioning the differences between gender roles/norms and actual behaviour in the adult population. The purpose of this paper is to explore to what extent attitudes toward gender roles correspond with adults’ participation in various domestic chores, pointing to the differences between men and women in general and within couples in the Czech Republic. We aim to find whether attitudes indicating gender roles equality are reflected in the real behaviour. Our findings indicate certain discrepancies between attitudes and behaviour. Although the attitudes expressed by the respondents appear to lead to more gender equality, their reflection in everyday life is weak. The inclination to equality in the answers to attitudinal questions did not significantly influence the equal distribution of unpaid domestic work, nor did it influence the difference between the work done by each partner in the couple. Furthermore, the results point to the fact that discrepancies do not differentiate by attained educational level (it is an argument against the status differentiation). Sexual intimacy characterized by desire is a critical component of the cultural ideal of successful marriage in the contemporary United States. How, then, does the experience of sexual intimacy in committed relationships change when its primary purpose is to promote conception? Through in‐depth interviews with 52 women married to men in the United States who recently attempted—and often struggled—to conceive through sexual intercourse with their spouses, this study finds that sex for the purpose of pregnancy becomes a highly rationalized project in which participants attempt to perfect their timing and promote the best chance for conception. In these married heterosexual couples, women manage the project of sex for the purpose of pregnancy and dictate to their husbands when they need to have sex. Using the third shift as a theoretical framework, this article demonstrates how sex for pregnancy becomes a gendered chore involving emotion work, cognitive labor, and body work. Objective: To assess the relationship between ADHD and performance of household chores. Method: A 72-question online questionnaire was developed to collect demographic/clinical information as well as parents' assessment of their child's performance of self-care (SC) and family-care (FC) chores. Results: The sample consists of 797 primary caregivers of children with ADHD. The overwhelming majority of parents believed that ADHD to some extent affected their child's ability to independently and satisfactorily complete SC and FC chores. An inverse relationship was noted between parent ratings of a child's ability to do chores independently and satisfactorily and the likelihood they believed ADHD affected chore performance. There was no difference in chore performance between children with or without co-morbid oppositional defiant disorder. Conclusion: Given that household routines, including chores, play an important role in children's development and psychosocial adjustment, clinicians must be sensitive to the adverse impact that ADHD may have in this regard. We consider the problem of fairly dividing a set of indivisible items. Much of the fair division literature assumes that the items are "goods" that yield positive utility for the agents. There is also some work in which the items are "chores" that yield negative utility for the agents. In this paper, we consider a more general scenario in which an agent may have positive or negative utility for each item. This framework captures, e.g., fair task assignment, where agents can experience both positive and negative utility for each task. We demonstrate that whereas some of the positive axiomatic and computational results extend to this more general setting, others do not. We present several new and efficient algorithms for finding fair allocations in this general setting. We also point out several gaps in the literature regarding the existence of allocations that satisfy certain fairness and efficiency properties and examine the complexity of computing such allocations.
