This article discusses how Chinese multinational enterprises internationalize in an era of increasingly fractured globalization. It introduces new perspectives that identify and describe four strategic pathways these multinationals employ while acquiring strategic assets and building and leveraging capabilities to increase value from their international presence. The pathways—bouncing up, down, sideways, and back—depend on the multinationals' strategies and the evolution of their internationalization. The pathways are distinct yet intertwined and influenced by powerful non-market forces, including geopolitical tensions (U.S.-China rivalry in particular) and Chinese domestic regulatory intervention. ABSTRACT Background Methods Results Conclusions Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, commonly resulting in acne scars. Treating acne scars remains a significant challenge in dermatology. With advancements in laser technology, its clinical use for treating acne scars has been increasing annually. However, bibliometric analysis on laser treatment for acne scars is lacking. This study aims to use bibliometrics to comprehensively understand the development trends and research hotspots in laser treatment for acne scars.Using “acne scar” and “laser” as search terms, literature on laser treatment of acne scars from 2014 to 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The literature data were visualized using VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and R software, generating maps of countries, research institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords.The analysis included 536 articles from 46 countries, with the United States and China leading in publications. Publications focusing on laser treatment of acne scars exhibit a consistent growth trend annually. Key research institutions include Mahidol University in Thailand, Cairo University in Egypt, and Hallym University in South Korea. The “Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology” had the highest number of articles in this field, while “Dermatologic Surgery” was the most cited publication. These publications involved contributions from 2135 authors, with Professor Manuskiatti Woraphong from Mahidol University in Thailand being the most prolific author in this field. Research on the efficacy of laser treatment for acne scars is a major focus in this field. Among the different types of lasers, CO2 lasers are the most commonly used. Emerging research focuses include therapies such as platelet‐rich plasma, picosecond laser, trichloroacetic acid, and burn scar.Treatment efficacy is the primary focus of research in the field of laser treatment for acne scars. Platelet‐rich plasma, and novel picosecond lasers, have emerged as hot topics and trends in this research field. However, it is important to note that the impact factors of journals publishing in this field are currently low. Structural Path Analysis (SPA) and the Hypothetical Extraction Method (HEM) are both established methods for studying CO2 emissions. However, their combined application to investigate emission linkages in specific sectors, such as construction, is relatively novel. This research integrates SPA and HEM to explore the CO2 emissions linkages within the construction sectors of China and the United States, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these emissions are interlinked. The findings show that construction sector of Untied States and China is the largest production-based CO2 emissions of construction sector in the world, but the consumption-based emissions of construction sector in China contributes 29.81% of total CO2 emissions, compared to 5.63% in the U.S. This suggests that the carbon footprint of the construction sector is a significant consideration, irrespective of whether it is assessed from the standpoint of production or consumption dynamics. Meanwhile, the development of construction sector has driven the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sectors to emit a large amount of CO2 emission in both countries. By analyzing the differences in the main emission linkages and pathways of the construction sectors between China and the U.S., this study provides insights for reducing CO2 emissions in the construction sector and assists policymakers in developing future strategies. Background: Researchers gradually focus on the relationship between phage and cancer. Objective: To summarize the research hotspots and trends in the field of bacteriophage and cancer. Methods: The downloaded articles were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection database from January 2008 to June 2023. Bibliometric analysis was carried out through CiteSpace, including the analysis of cooperative networks (country/region, institution, and author), co-citations of references, and key words.Visual analysis of three topics, including gut phage, phage and bacteria, and phage and tumor, was conducted. Results: Overall, the United States and China have the most phage-related research. In terms of gut phage, the future research directions are "gut microbiome", "database" and "microbiota". The bursting citations explored the phage-dominated viral genome to discover its diversity and individual specificity and investigated associations among bacteriome, metabolome, and virome. In terms of phage and bacteria, "lipopolysaccharide" and "microbiota" are future research directions. Future research hotspots should mainly concentrate on the further exploration and application of phage properties. As for phages and tumors, the future research directions should be "colorectal cancer", "protein" and "phage therapy". Future directions are likely to focus on the research on phages in cancer mechanisms, cancer diagnosis, and cancer treatment combined with genetic engineering techniques. Conclusion: Phage therapy would become a hot spot and research direction of tumor and phage research, and the relationship between phage and tumor, especially colorectal cancer (CRC), is expected to be further explored. In this paper, we posit that the ‘global’ status of the pandemic is not an essentialized feature of the crisis, but a product of social construction by political leaders. More specifically, we examine how political leaders of a superpower and a peripheral nation produce the pandemic's globality through crisis geographies from above and below. Utilizing a mixed methods framework, we analyse public speeches by Donald Trump of the United States and Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines through a critical approach to text analytics. Quantitatively, we found that besides mentioning their own homelands, Western countries featured more prominently in Trump's speeches while Asian neighbours were more salient in Duterte's speeches during the pandemic. However, the United States and China were consistently the most central in the crisis geographies of the pandemic of both speakers. Qualitatively, we further characterized the discourses surrounding these global pronouncements as: (a) collective reflexive positioning on the world stage, (b) charting zones of hope and (c) scapegoating zones of blame. Taken together, implications of this work are discussed in terms of understanding pandemic leadership in national and international contexts, recognizing its negotiated embeddedness in global structural hierarchies and enhancing critical approaches to geopolitical psychology. Introduction: Magnolia grandiflora L. (southern magnolia) is native to the southeastern coastal areas of the United States, from North Carolina to eastern Texas (USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 8). It is currently widely cultivated in Zones 5-10 in the U.S. and in southern Yangtze River regions in China. Limited studies have examined the effects of climate change and human activities on the geographical distribution and adaptability of M. grandiflora during its introduction to China. Methods: We selected 127 occurrence points in the U.S. and 87 occurrence points in China, along with 43 environmental variables, to predict suitable habitat areas for M. grandiflora using present climate data (1970-2000) and projected future climate data (2050-2070) based on a complete niche ensemble model (EM) using the Biomod2 package. We also predicted the niche change of M. grandiflora in both countries using the 'ecospat' package in R. Results: The ensemble models demonstrated high reliability, with an AUC of 0.993 and TSS of 0.932. Solar radiation in July, human impact index, and precipitation of the wettest month were identified as the most critical variables influencing M. grandiflora distribution. The species shows a similar trend of distribution expansion under climate change scenarios in both countries, with predicted expansions towards the northwest and northeast, and contractions in southern regions. Discussion: Our study emphasizes a practical framework for predicting suitable habitats and migration of Magnoliaceae species under climate change scenarios. The current United States National Defense Strategy prioritizes strategic competition with Russia and China, whereas for the previous two decades, the priority was counter-terrorism. This research aims to measure the extent to which competition among great powers is intensifying and identify where such intensification is taking place. To achieve this, we utilize a large, open-source dataset called GDELT 2.0, which provides an archive of global news articles. We calculate the entropy for local press coverage of great powers (e.g., the United States, China, Russia, France, and India) across 96 African and Asian nations to measure static competition levels. Additionally, we identify African and Asian nations where competition levels have changed significantly between 2015 and 2020. Our findings show that seven countries are experiencing increased competition among great powers, whereas seven other countries experience increased domination by one great power. When we aggregate the data geographically, we find that Southeast Asia is the only subregion where there is a significant decrease in competition. Our results align with the primary concern of the National Defense Strategy: that American influence is decreasing. Specifically, we have identified increased competition across Africa and increased domination across Asia. AbstractThis paper examines how Vietnam has navigated U.S.-China rivalry in the Mekong basin while seeking to ensure its security, prosperity, and autonomy. I use the theoretical lens of hedging, defined as an insurance-maximising behaviour under conditions of high uncertainty. While existing scholarship has extensively examined Vietnam’s hedging on maritime security issues and the broader U.S.-China strategic and economic competition, this paper makes an empirical contribution by focusing on the relatively understudied angle of hedging in the Mekong basin context. I argue that Vietnam has hedged by (1) diversifying its Mekong partnerships with both the United States and China and (2) selectively cooperating with China under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation. These acts aim to minimise Vietnam’s exposure to the long-term consequences of several non-traditional security risks, namely ecological challenges, water insecurity, economic vulnerabilities, and energy insecurity. The digitalization of the economy has brought significant benefits but also poses risks. These risks prompted first the European Union and subsequently China and the United States to adopt regulations. The three powers are seen to have very different regulatory approaches – the US deferring to the market, China prioritizing the government, and the EU protecting the individual – and to be exporting their models. As a result, many commentators contend that the digital economy is conflictual. Drawing on evidence from the contributions to the special issue, this article challenges two conventional wisdoms about the transatlantic digital relationship. First, it argues that transatlantic regulatory differences have been rooted in politics rather than principled differences. Second, rather than rule differences and jurisdictional conflict being virtually synonymous, transatlantic differences in approaches to governing the digital economy almost never led to conflict and, even then, cooperation was preferred. Background: In recent years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has escalated alarmingly, posing significant threats to the physical and mental well-being of children, with an elevated likelihood of persisting into adulthood. Notably, recent investigations have uncovered a profound association between intestinal microbiota, a crucial component of the internal milieu, and childhood obesity. Disturbances in intestinal microbiota and their by-products are now understood to be profoundly intertwined with the evolutionary pathway of childhood obesity. Bibliometric analysis offers a deep understanding of the current research landscape, so we apply it to a review of the emerging trends and patterns between childhood obesity and gut microbiota. Materials and methods: We conducted a rigorous and extensive search of the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, spanning the years from 1900 to 2023, to analyze scholarly articles pertaining to childhood obesity and gut microbiota. Utilizing VOSviewer, CiteSpace, the R package "bibliometrix," and the online bibliometric analysis platform (https://bibliometric.com/), we delved into the intricate details of research hotspots, academic collaborations, and emerging trends within this domain. Results: The exhaustive search encompassed the globe, uncovering a cumulative total of 1,384 pertinent studies originating from 429 nations. The results were compelling, revealing a profound influence exerted by the United States and China in this specific field of research. Furthermore, it was observed that the volume of scholarly works pertaining to childhood obesity and gut microbiota is steadily growing year on year. Background: This study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research trends, hotspots, and future directions in the immunoregulatory mechanisms of allergic rhinitis (AR) from 2014 to 2024. Methods: Data were sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), covering articles and reviews published between April 1, 2014, and March 31, 2024. The search terms included "Allergic Rhinitis," "AR," and related terms along with specific keywords related to immune cells and inflammatory mediators. Bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and SCImago Graphica were used to analyze institutional cooperation networks, keyword co-occurrence, citation bursts, and research topic evolution. Microsoft Excel 2019 was employed to display annual publication trends. Results: A total of 2200 papers met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The number of publications showed an upward trend over the past decade, with a significant peak in 2021. China (583 papers) and the United States (454 papers) were the major contributing countries. Imperial College London emerged as the leading institution. Key research frontiers identified include the roles of NF kappa B and air pollution in AR. Keyword burst analysis revealed emerging topics such as respiratory allergy and personalized treatment strategies. Notable limitations include the exclusive use of the WoSCC database and the restriction to English-language publications. This paper aims to study the volatility forecasting of Chinese crude oil futures from the large‐scale variables perspective by considering both the information on international futures markets volatility and technical indicators of Chinese crude oil futures. We employ the dual feature processing method (LASSO‐PCA) by integrating least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and principal component analysis (PCA) to extract important factors of the large‐scale exogenous variables. Besides the traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation, the nonlinear support vector regression (SVR) approach is employed to integrate with the LASSO‐PCA method. The empirical results show that both the OLS and SVR combined with LASSO‐PCA can improve the forecasting accuracy, especially SVR‐LASSO‐PCA owns the best forecasting performance. The analysis of the selected variables finds international futures volatility is chosen more frequently. These results are further validated through a series of robust experiments. Previous studies have described diaspora members as linguistically stable subjects on whom bounded linguistic or ethnic categories are imposed, yet more recent research tends to view transnational identity as fluid and situational. This study investigates how adolescents with advanced Chinese and English proficiency living across China and the United States perceive their language and identity under conditions of constant mobility. Drawn from a two-year ethnographic project on Chinese diasporic families, the present study adopted phenomenography as the methodological approach and collected data through interviews and participant observations with 18 transnational adolescents living in the US. The findings reveal the adolescents’ perspectives on transnational identity as a situated construct that entails one’s sense of location, nationality, ethnicity, culture, kinship, language and pursuit of personal meaning. These many facets of identity are not mutually exclusive but closely interrelated, and these adolescents can access a rich identity repertoire through strategic bilingual/multilingual practices. These findings suggest the fluidity and complexity of transnational identity and illustrate the analytical efficacy of phenomenography. Crucially, through this way of identity performance these bi/multilinguals are able to break the hyphenated entitlement (e.g. ‘Chinese-American’) that may have suppressed their self-recognition and embrace a fascinating world with unprecedented possibilities. This study aims to investigate whether growing geopolitical competition has affected international collaboration in sustainable development research, with a particular focus on structural changes in bilateral research collaboration between China and the United States. Three datasets have been created and compared using bibliographic information provided by the Web of Science core collection: before the Trump administration, during the Trump administration, and during the Biden administration. The results indicate that countries worldwide have conducted extensive research in sustainable development, and the United States, China, and the United Kingdom have produced the most publications, demonstrating a high level of scientific research productivity. Concerning the collaborative patterns of sustainable development research, China and the United States are each other's largest collaborative partners. The intensity of scientific research collaboration between the two countries has not declined due to geopolitical tensions. Conversely, the intensity of scientific research between the two countries is still increasing. The keyword thematic explorations reveal that research on China–US collaboration has focused differently across the three time periods and that despite differences in research bias, efforts to contribute to advancing the achievement of the SDGs have been consistent. We propose that experiencing a lack of personal control will increase people’s preferences for self-similar others and that this effect would be explained by a greater need for structure. Our hypotheses received support across 11 longitudinal, experimental, and archival studies composed of data from 60 countries (5 preregistered studies, N = 90,216). In an analysis of cross-country archival data, we found that respondents who indicated a lower sense of personal control were less likely to prefer to live with neighbors who had a different religion, race, or spoke a different language (Study 1). Study 2 found that participants who perceived lower (vs. higher) personal control indicated greater liking for coworkers who they perceived to be more self-similar across a wide range of characteristics (e.g., gender, personality). Studies 3a and 3b, two live-interaction experiments conducted in the United States and China, provided additional causal evidence for control-motivated similarity attraction. A causal experimental chain (Studies 4a to 4c) and a manipulation-of-mediation-as-a-moderator study (Study 5) provided evidence for the mediating effects of the need for structure. Study 6, a longitudinal study with Chinese employees, found that workers who reported perceiving a lower (vs. higher) sense of personal control preferred more self-similar coworkers, and this effect was mediated by a greater desire for structure. Finally, exploring downstream consequences, Studies 7a and 7b found that control-motivated similarity attraction was associated with a greater preference for homogenous (vs. diverse) groups. Background: Epilepsy, a common neurological disorder, has been increasingly associated with neuroinflammation, especially microglia activation. To gain insights into the research trends and patterns in this intersection, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of studies published between 2005 and 2024. Using the Web of Science Core Collection, we identified 1,229 relevant articles and reviews, focusing on the relationship between epilepsy and microglia. Methods: We employed the Bibliometrix R package and VOSviewer to analyze the data. Our search strategy combined epilepsy-related terms with microglia and microglial cell keywords. The analysis encompassed publication trends, country and institutional contributions, journal sources, authors, keywords, and thematic evolution. Results: The number of publications has steadily increased, particularly after 2019, indicating growing research interest. The United States, China, and Germany emerged as the most productive countries, with extensive collaboration between China and the United States. Epilepsia and Journal of Neuroinflammation were the most influential journals. Aronica E, Vezzani A, and Engel T were the most prolific authors. Thematic analysis revealed clusters focused on temporal lobe epilepsy, epilepsy-related disorders, and microglia activation. Over the past several years, research has shifted from fundamental brain function studies to in-vivo investigations of specific molecular mechanisms. The CSTB (-) mouse model and NF-κB signaling pathway both merit further in-depth investigation. Conclusion: In conclusion, this bibliometric study reveals a surge in epilepsymicroglia research, led by key countries, journals, and researchers. Temporal lobe epilepsy, epilepsy-related disorders, and microglia activation are focal themes. China has insisted that the BRI is a policy of openness, inclusiveness, and win–win rather than a geopolitical exercise or the Chinese version of the Marshall Plan. By exploring the repeated setbacks in the BRI cooperation between South Korea and China over the past 10 years, this study found that the BRI cooperation is a product of geopolitical considerations and that it is vulnerable to geopolitical conditions and factors. It also implies that unless the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China over the Korean Peninsula is alleviated or the reality of the North–South Korea's divide is overcome, neither the alignment of South Korea's initiatives with China's BRI nor the expansion of the BRI to Northeast Asia will be easy. This paper assesses the impact of real exchange rate (RER) misalignment on the trade balance between the United States and China, accounting for the complexity of traded products. We employ two recent econometric techniques: the panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to estimate both long – and short-run dynamics, and the dynamic panel threshold model of Seo, M. H., and Y. Shin (2016. “Dynamic Panels with Threshold Effect and Endogeneity.” Journal of Econometrics 195 (2): 169–186) to uncover potential non-linearities and identify critical thresholds that could lead to a regime shift. Using highly disaggregated trade data at the HS 06-digit level, encompassing 913 products from 2004 to 2020, our findings reveal a negative impact of RER misalignment on the United States’ trade balance with China. However, this detrimental effect is significant only in industries dealing with less complex products. In contrast, industries handling highly complex products show a notably positive impact. Furthermore, our results suggest that industries can benefit from an undervalued exchange rate only when they have a relatively high level of product complexity. Soil salinization presents a considerable risk to agricultural sustainability globally. Remote sensing technology facilitates extensive monitoring and assessment of soil salinization, thus providing technical support for its prevention and management. This study utilizes bibliometric methods to examine the attributes of publications, key research areas, and their evolutionary trends within the domain of soil salinization remote sensing evaluation, spanning 1999 to 2023, using data from the Web of Science Core Collection. Visualization is facilitated by CiteSpace software. The results indicate: (1) In terms of research trends, international investigations into remote sensing monitoring of soil salinization show an overall upward trend, with France, the United States and China being the largest contributors to this field of research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is the institution that has published the most papers, and the journal that has published the most papers is Remote Sensing; (2) In terms of collaborative networks, research institutes and government organizations contribute to a large extent to institutional collaboration. However, most cooperation is currently internal; (3) Keyword analysis demonstrates that over the past 25 years, the research field of soil salinization has evolved from preliminary quantitative monitoring to more in-depth studies using intelligent analysis. The implementation of machine learning and new-generation remote sensing satellites significantly enhances the precision and efficiency of remote sensing monitoring, pointing towards new directions for solving future soil salinization issues. This article examines the controversy surrounding 5G in the United Kingdom preceding the decision to remove Huawei from the UK network. We analyse UK parliamentary debates from 2012–2020 against the backdrop of tensions between the United States and China in the race for global leadership in 5G technology. We identify four principal themes in the UK parliamentary discourse: Huawei as innovator and collaborator; a threat to national security; as undermining UK relations with its allies; and embodying opposing values. We argue that the narrative shifts in the UK government’s position towards Huawei correspond to Conservative Party internal conflicts on how to navigate the UK’s relationship with Huawei in response to geopolitical pressures. AbstractThe prevailing analytical approach within international relations scholarship has primarily framed China’s growing involvement in the Gulf region through a hedging strategy. Although this framework offers explanatory value, it misses the impact of China’s search for international hierarchy and Sino-US rivalry for subordinates in shaping China’s strategic policy choices in the Gulf. This article, anchored in hierarchy studies in international relations, posits that the intensifying global competition between the United States and China for influence over subordinate states has driven China to pursue an ‘outbidding’ strategy. In applying this approach, China provides Gulf states with more appealing economic, military, and technological incentives than the United States. Since Xi Jinping’s ascension to power in 2013, China has considerably expanded its regional influence by investing heavily in this strategy. However, the long-term effectiveness of this strategy hinges on overcoming two key constraints inherent to the semi-hierarchical order of the Gulf: the distinct strategic considerations of US allies and non-allies and the balancing dilemma that China confronts. Can China catch-up with the United States technologically by mobilizing its bureaucracy and assigning ambitious targets to local governments? We analyzed an original dataset of 4.6 million patents filed in China from 1990 through 2014 and paired this with a new, rigorous measure of patent novelty that approximates the quality of innovation. In 2006, China's central government launched a national campaign to promote indigenous innovation and introduced bureaucratic targets for patents. Our analysis finds evidence that these targets, combined with political competition, pushed local governments to "game the numbers" by channeling relatively more effort toward boosting non-novel—possibly junk—patents over novel patents. Nationally, this is reflected in a surge of aggregate patents paired with a falling ratio of novel patents. Background: Despite numerous studies confirming the association between insulin resistance (IR) and macrophage polarization, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis in this area. Therefore, our objective is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of published literature and identify potential future research trends using bibliometrics. Method: Publications on the topic of macrophage polarization in IR were gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) spanning the years 1999–2023. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were conducted using VOSviewers, CiteSpace, the R package "bibliometrix" and Tableau Public. Result: A total of 3435 articles published between 1999 and 2023 were included in the analysis. These articles originated from 75 countries, with the United States and China leading in contributions. The top five research institutions are the University of California, San Diego, Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. In this research domain, Diabetes is the most frequently published journal, and the Journal of Clinical Investigation is the most co‐cited. Among the 19,398 authors contributing to these publications, Lumeng CN. not only authored the most papers but also received the highest number of co‐citations. "Insulin resistance" emerges as a primary keyword in the analysis of emerging research hotspots. Conclusion: For the first time, bibliometric methods have been employed to conduct a comprehensive summary of papers relevant to macrophage polarization in IR. Anthropogenic land‐use practices influence ecosystem functions and the environment. Yet, the effect of global land‐use change on ecosystem nitrogen (N) cycling remains unquantified despite that ecosystem N cycling plays a critical role in maintaining food security. Here, we analysed 2430 paired observations globally to show that converting natural to managed ecosystems increases ratios of autotrophic nitrification to ammonium immobilisation and nitrate to ammonium, but decreases soil immobilisation of mineral N, causing increased N losses via leaching and gaseous N emissions, such as nitrous oxide (e.g., via denitrification), resulting in a leaky N cycle. Changing land use from intensively managed to one that resembles natural ecosystems reversed N losses by 108% on average, resulting in a more conservative N cycle. Structural equation modelling revealed that changes in soil organic carbon, pH and carbon to N ratio were more important than changes in soil moisture content and temperature in predicting ecosystem N retention capacities following land‐use conversion and its reversion. The hotspots of leaky N cycles were mostly in equatorial and tropical regions, as well as in Western Europe, the United States and China. The global attention on industrial policy's effectiveness spans across various sectors, particularly in international trade where the focus is on enhancing the quality of foreign trade, which is crucial to understand how research hotspots and key issues can synergize. We consider the 2018 "new round" of Sino-US trade friction as an external event and analyze panel data from 2009 to 2022 comprising 1141 Chinese A-share listed enterprises. Our empirical research unequivocally demonstrates that industrial policy has significantly propelled China's foreign trade towards high-quality development by 1.8240%. We conducted rigorous tests for robustness, heterogeneity, and endogeneity. Additionally, our results reveal that inhibitory influences arising from industrial policy on total assets or R&D investment attenuate this promotion effect; There exists a diminishing promotion effect between total assets and R&D investment. Our paper provides valuable insights into understanding their logical relationship while offering guidance for enterprises, markets, and governments in overcoming challenges collectively. Chatbots have been widely adopted to support online customer service and supplement human agents. However, online data transmission may involve privacy issues and arouse users' privacy concerns. In order to understand the privacy management mechanism when interacting with chatbots and human agents, we designed a cross-national comparative study and conducted online experiments in China and the United States based on Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory. The results show that privacy concerns and boundary linkage played different mediation roles between agent identity and the intention to disclose as well as the intention to use the service. Information sensitivity had a significant moderating effect on the mechanism. This article re-examines why and how China abandoned one of the core ideological principles of the Mao era: self-reliance. This did not occur after 1978 and Deng Xiaoping’s ascent to paramount power, but instead from 1971, when technocratic Chinese leaders redefined self-reliance to include importing advanced technology to better develop China’s resources, including for export — a change that anticipated the policies of post-1978 Reform and Opening. The article argues that this redefinition was possible because Sino-American rapprochement and the end of the US technology and economic embargo on China provided previously unprecedented levels of access to US and Western technology. This study selected the Sino-US route data from the top 30 global container liner companies between December 1, 2019, and December 29, 2019, as the data source utilizing the complex network research methodology. It constructs a Sino-US container shipping network through voyage weighting and analyzes the essential structural characteristics to explore the network's complex structural features. The network's evolution is examined from three perspectives, namely, time, space, and event influence, aiming to comprehensively explore the network's evolution mechanism. The results revealed that: 1) the weighted Sino-US container shipping network exhibits small-world and scale-free properties. Key hub ports in the United States include NEW YORK NY, SAVANNAH GA, LOS ANGELES CA, and OAKLAND CA, whereas SHANGHAI serving as the hub port in China. The geographical distribution of these hub ports is uneven. 2) Concerning the evolution of the weighted Sino-US container shipping network, from a temporal perspective, the evolution of the regional structure of the entire Sino-US region and the Inland United States is in a stage of radiative expansion and development, with a need for further enhancement in competitiveness and development speed. The evolution of the regional structure of southern China and Europe is transitioning from the stage of radiative expansion and development to an advanced equilibrium stage. The shipping development in Northern China, the Western and Eastern United States, and Asia is undergoing significant changes but faces challenges of fierce competition and imbalances. From a spatial perspective, the rationality and effectiveness of the improved weighted Barrat-Barthelemy-Vespignani (BBV) model are confirmed through theoretical derivation. The applicability of the improved evolution model is verified by simulating the evolution of the weighted Sino-US container shipping network. From an event impact perspective, the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has not fundamentally affected the spatial pattern of the weighted Sino-US container shipping network but has significantly impacted the network's connectivity. Based on the Derwent patent index database, this paper takes the data source of 5G technology-related patents of China and the United States from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2019. It uses the social network analysis method to conduct a comparative study on the cooperative innovation network and evolution path of 5G technology between China and the United States. The paper's results present that: (1) the scale of the 5G technology industry in the two countries continues to expand, and the field of patented technology continues to improve, (2) The number of 5G technology-related patents in China exceeds that in the United States, but China lacks core patents, the quality of 5G technology innovation lags that in the United States, (3) Most of the resources in the innovation networks in China and the US are controlled by large companies, but the level of cooperation among Chinese patentees is not as high as that in the US. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most prevalent malignancy among men globally. The diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of prostate cancer frequently fall short of expectations. In recent years, the connection between inflammation and prostate cancer has attracted considerable attention. However, there is a lack of bibliometric studies analyzing the research on inflammation within the domain of prostate cancer. Research methods: We utilized the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) as our data source to extract articles and reviews related to inflammation in prostate cancer, published up until April 12, 2024. The collected data underwent meticulous manual screening, followed by bibliometric analysis and visualization using the Biblioshiny package in R. Results: This study encompasses an analysis of 2,786 papers focusing on inflammation-related research within the realm of prostate cancer. Recent years have seen a significant proliferation of publications in this area, with the United States and China being the foremost contributors. The most prolific author in this domain is Demarzoam, with Johns Hopkins University standing out as the most influential institution. The leading journal in disseminating these studies is PROSTATE. Keyword co-occurrence analysis reveals that ‘inflammation-related biomarkers’, ‘inflammation index’, and ‘tumor immune microenvironment’ represent the current research hotspots and frontiers. Conclusion: The findings of this bibliometric study serve to illuminate the current landscape of inflammation-related research in the field of prostate cancer, while further augmenting the discourse on inflammation-mediated cancer therapeutics. Of particular note is the potential of these discoveries to facilitate a more nuanced understanding among researchers regarding the interplay between inflammation and prostate cancer. Drawing on the survey data from 259 students enrolled at American universities, the study explores how recent tensions between China and the U.S. and issues of public safety would affect Chinese students' perceptions and aspirations for American education. The findings of the research identify significant correlations between the effects of U.S. policies regarding Chinese students, concerns about U.S. public safety, and the impact of U.S. foreign policy toward China on Chinese students at American universities. Students' responses reveal how the pursuit of an American college education remains deeply intertwined with broader societal dynamics and geopolitical realities, which challenge the aspirations of Chinese students for education abroad in an increasingly deglobalizing world. The ongoing trade war between China and the United States has had a far-reaching impact on a global scale. This rivalry has been most obvious in the semiconductor industry. The two nations have found themselves in a tense geopolitical situation where any economic attack by either side would affect all parties involved. This paper aims to explore the origins of this conflict and highlight the key actions taken by each country, as well as the consequences of those actions. Additionally, it highlights the areas of interdependence between China and the US (i.e., American high-tech chips and Chinese rare earth materials). The study utilizes the theory of weaponizing independence and game theory's Prisoner's Dilemma to conclude that while both China and the US have suffered negative consequences due to this conflict, China's latest technological advancements in the 7nm chip and their supply of rare earth materials have given them a stronger hand in the game. Japan's lost decade has long puzzled economists, specifically as to what brought it about. As China's current economic conditions resemble Japan's in the 1980s, this has prompted concern China might suffer a similar fate. This paper identifies that the response of the Japanese central bank toward the Plaza Accord, which is unfettered lending was the key factor of lost decades. By contrasting Sino-US and Japan-US trade wars, this paper argues that China will not fall foul of the same situation of accepting a new Plaza Accord. By comparing China's bubble economy now with Japan's bubble economy in the 1980s, this paper argues that the fallout from a burst Chinese bubble is expected to be less severe than Japan's early 1990s. Furthermore, by analyzing the two countries' respective debt problems and aging populations, it is concluded that these issues pose no significant threat to Chinese economic growth in the short term. Strategic planning is integral to government performance management reforms in both China and the United States. How do the two countries differ in their planning approaches? This study examines this issue by using Charles Lindblom's theory of synoptic and strategic planning. It shows that China relies on centralized, elite-led synoptic planning, rooted in its Communist legacy, while the United States, with its focus on social interaction in policymaking, places value on preference-guided and consultation-based strategic planning. Background: Camrelizumab combined with rivoceranib has been proven effective for treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). However, their higher prices than sorafenib could impose a substantial economic burden on patients. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the relative cost-effectiveness of the combination of camrelizumab and rivoceranib versus sorafenib as first-line therapy for patients with uHCC from the perspective of the US and Chinese payers. Method: Using data from the CARES-310 trial, a partitioned survival model (PSM) was developed, considering the perspectives of the US and Chinese payers. The model employed a 15-year time horizon and a biweekly cycle. Direct medical costs and utility data were collected from previous studies and open-access databases. Primary outcomes included quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). Price simulations, sensitivity analyses, and subgroup analyses were conducted. Results: The ICER for the US and China was $122,388.62/QALY and $30,410.56/QALY, respectively, falling below the willingness-to-pay (WTP) thresholds of $150,000/QALY for the US and $35,898.87/QALY for China. Price simulations indicated the cost-effectiveness of camrelizumab plus rivoceranib when the price of camrelizumab (200 mg) remained below $6275.19 in the US and $558.09 in China. The primary determinant of cost-effectiveness in both regions was the cost of camrelizumab. Conclusion: The combination of camrelizumab and rivoceranib is a cost-effective first-line therapy for uHCC in both the US and China. Lowering their prices could significantly influence their cost-effectiveness and accessibility to patients. This article explores the challenges faced by researchers in collaborating across national borders due to growing geopolitical tensions. It specifically focuses on strategic areas such as microelectronics and quantum computing. The responses of major science nations, including the US and Europe, to China's rise as a global science node are also discussed. The article emphasizes the need for a global dialogue and responsible research practices that balance research security, academic freedom, and institutional autonomy. Ongoing efforts by international research funders to develop a code of conduct for responsible practices in international research collaborations are highlighted. In this article, to model risk contagion between the U.S. and China stock markets based on high-frequency financial data, we develop a novel continuous-time jump-diffusion process. For example, we consider three channels for volatility contagion—such as integrated volatility, positive jump variation, and negative jump variation—and each stock market is able to affect the other stock market as an overnight risk factor. We develop a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator for model parameters and establish its asymptotic properties. Furthermore, to identify contagion channels and test the existence of a structural break with a known structural break date, we propose hypothesis test procedures. Using the proposed diffusion model with high-frequency financial data, we investigate the effect of the U.S.–China trade war on stock markets from a financial contagion perspective. From the empirical study, we find evidence of financial contagion from the United States to China and evidence that the risk contagion channel has changed from integrated volatility to negative jump variation. Container transportation has the advantages of standardization, high efficiency, and high safety, which are essential for promoting the development of the world economy and trade. Emergencies such as severe weather, public health incidents, and social security incidents can negatively affect the operational reliability of the container shipping network. To ensure the network security and high-quality operation of container shipping, a double-layer coupled container transportation network is first described to analyze the evolution of the container shipping network and the risk propagation dynamics of operation participants. On this basis, a cascade failure model of the container shipping network considering risk level is constructed. To evaluate the vulnerability of the container shipping network, the transmission mechanism of cascade failure effects of the container shipping network under different emergency development trends and the evolution law and influence path of the container shipping network structure are both analyzed. Finally, we empirically studied the container shipping network in China and the United States, and characteristic parameters of the China–U.S. container shipping network are calculated and analyzed. The model's validity is verified through practical cases and model simulation results, and the cascading failure process of the container shipping network in China and the United States under three types of attacks is simulated. The study explored the potential effects of country image and brand trust on Americans' adoption and use of TikTok following the 2020 proposed TikTok ban. Although brand trust affected both the adoption and continuous use of TikTok among U.S. users, the perception of the Chinese government played a crucial role in their initial adoption while the perception of Chinese companies affected their continuous use of the app following the attempted ban. The study supported a multidimensional construct of country image and argued that the political aspects of country image involving Chinese products are becoming predominant with the intensifying rivalry between U.S. and China. The results suggested that Trump administration's TikTok ban in 2020 may have a considerable impact on the issue and attribute salience of TikTok, resulting in different patterns of TikTok adoption and usage among Americans. This study investigates, within the framework of Critical Metaphor Analysis, how The New York Times (NYT) has been metaphorically formulating China as an "other" from 1949 to 2020. Metaphors were identified with reference to Pragglejaz Group's (2007) Metaphor Identification Procedure. WAR and GAME were detected as dominant concepts, and LIQUID, DISEASE, ANIMAL, MACHINE, and OBSTACLE secondary imagery. It is found that the newspaper's journalistic values in foreign news reporting and judging criteria toward political leadership have remained radically unchanged. Having been influenced by changes in China-U.S. relations and America's domestic socio-political ideals, the NYT has been othering China from the civilized world, which tends to be particularly prominent when China's performance is short of the values and norms preached by the US, and became inconspicuous during China-U.S. alliance. Running counter to its commitment to "truth," the newspaper employed discursive strategies to balance between America's moral self-identity and its China policy, and vindicate behaviors identical to those it has been criticizing China for. This article examines the strategies the United States and China have adopted in their current competition associated with the proverbial power transition. The article argues that despite the dangers of a potential war resulting from power transition, the US-China relationship is likely to muddle through until the two countries find a way to coexist peacefully. The reasons are twofold: the United States, the status quo power, is not willing or prepared for a direct conflict with China even though it is determined to contain China's rise; and China, on the other hand, has shown no desire to replace the United States as a dominant global power and is working to consolidate its standing as a major power in the multipolar world. Though both powers claim that they are not interested in war, due to lack of trust, the policies they take are perceived as provocative and confrontational by the other side and have the potential to bring about an actual conflict between them, especially in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. As a result of intense competition between them, relations at all four levels-global, governmental, societal, and individual-have deteriorated since the Trump administration. The US-China rivalry has also put some third parties in a difficult situation in which they may feel compelled to choose sides. The paper suggests that the US-China rivalry is taking place in an era with nuclear weapons and AI technologies, which makes it even more challenging to manage the power transition now. The United States and China are engaged in an intense security competition that can be described as a new Cold War. What is driving the downturn in US-China relations? Many analysts attribute the cause to decisions made by individual leaders. In contrast, this paper argues that the main cause of the US-China rivalry is structural rather than individual. The changing distribution of power between the two nations is generating structural pressures that push them into strategic competition. Fear of being overtaken by China has prompted Washington to move away from a policy of engagement to a policy of containment. Objective: Nivolumab, recently proven in a phase 3 clinical trial (CheckMate 901) to enhance survival when combined with gemcitabine-cisplatin for advanced urothelial carcinoma. This study aimed to assess its cost-effectiveness against gemcitabine-cisplatin alone, from US and Chinese payers' perspectives. Methods: A partitioned survival model was established to assess the life-years, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), lifetime costs, and incremental costeffectiveness ratios (ICERs) of nivolumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin versus gemcitabine-cisplatin alone as first-line treatment for advanced urothelial carcinoma. Univariate, two-way, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the model's robustness. Additionally, subgroup analyses were performed. Results: Nivolumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin and gemcitabine-cisplatin achieved survival benefits of 4.238 life-years and 2.979 life-years for patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma, respectively. Compared with gemcitabinecisplatin, nivolumab plus gemcitabine-cisplatin resulted in ICERs of $116,856/QALY in the US and $51,997/QALY in China. The probabilities of achieving costeffectiveness at the current willingness-to-pay thresholds were 77.5% in the US and 16.5% in China. Cost-effectiveness could be reached if the price of nivolumab were reduced to $920.87/100mg in China. AbstractThe rise of artificial intelligence (AI), represented by ChatGPT, has triggered a new wave of technological competition between nations. Major powers like China and the United States, backed by abundant resources, dominate the discourse and hold a significant advantage in the AI field. However, as the technological rivalry between these two countries intensifies, AI represents a classic ‘double-edged sword’ for many small and medium-sized countries. Therefore, the core argument of this paper is that the AI policies of small and medium-sized countries are not simply about bandwagoning or depending on major powers. At their core, these policies represent a complex form of technological hedging. External security concerns drive small and medium-sized countries to adopt hedging as a primary strategy, while internal interest preferences influence the varying intensities of this technological hedging. The findings of this paper indicate that small countries’ technological policies can be categorized into three models: strong hedging, medium hedging, and weak hedging. Different paths of technological hedging reflect the rational balance these nations make between security and economic interests in different contexts. Singapore is classified as a technological frontrunner, while Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam are categorized as followers. Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines are considered latecomers in the field of AI. In terms of specific AI policies, Singapore and Vietnam adopt a strong technological hedging strategy, seeking more cooperation and interaction with the U.S. or other countries due to caution and concerns about China’s technological security. Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines follow a medium hedging strategy, while Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Brunei adopt a weak hedging approach. The differences in hedging intensity are primarily due to varying internal legitimacy pathways and the strength of backup resources.
