Children's songs have an impact, on the wellbeing, personality development, communication skills and cognitive growth of preschool and elementary school children. They teach values, character education and positive behavior through creativity. This study aims to explore how Sinhala children's songs can be used as a medium to instill values. A purposive sampling method was used to select twelve songs for analysis. Each song underwent an examination to identify phrases and ideas related to ten fundamental values using discourse analysis. Through qualitative approach, the research focused on uncovering values embedded in the lyrics. The importance of these values was assessed based on their presence and influence on the theme and narrative. Application of Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values revealed a range of values within the selected songs that reflect experiences and perspectives influenced by cultural norms, family dynamics and societal expectations. The songs highlight concepts such as thoughtfulness, empathy, respect, education, tradition, relationships, personal growth, ethical reflection and cultural values such as benevolence and harmony with nature. Among this identified values benevolence emerges as the main theme in the songs symbolizing nurturing love and support. Conversely, power appears to be the least emphasized value in these songs, suggesting that they place an importance on relationships, empathy, personal growth and kindness. In a nut-shell, it is crystal clear that children's songs have the ability to impart values in children, aiding the overall development of a child's character. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statistics derived from the Essen Folksong Collection have widely been used as a proxy for general stylistic norms familiar to Western listeners. Since the specific facets of contemporary musical experience best modeled by a corpus of nineteenth-century European folksongs remain ambiguous, this study tests whether Essen-like music might be familiar to North American listeners through common children’s songs. Comparison with a corpus of 38 English-language children’s songs highly popular in North America finds that scale degrees from Essen and the children’s song corpus have near-perfect correlations in frequency profiles as well as high to very high correlations in tonal expectations and 4-grams. Profiles of scale degrees’ downbeat probabilities and average durations have moderate to high correlations for the diatonic but not the total chromatic. Overall, profiles of scale-degree behavior from the children’s song corpus match profiles from Essen more closely than do profiles from another corpus of music widely familiar to contemporary listeners (Billboard Hot 100 songs) and similarly closely as a corpus of nineteenth-century common-practice German vocal music (Schubert songs). For contemporary North American listeners, studies relying on Essen might plausibly be reinterpreted in terms of Essen acting as a corpus of early musical experience although the generalizability of Essen-derived statistics likely depends on the precise statistics being measured.

This essay spins off the many versions of "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly." This children's song plays with rhyme to tell the story of an old woman who dies after consuming increasingly large animals to rid herself of the previously swallowed one. Revisiting the lyrics, the violence, with its lulling repetition and rhyme, enacted by the old woman was unsettling, another of so many cultural phenomena that deaden our response to violence. This piece calls upon poetic inquiry to explore the rampant violence in U.S. culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Venda musicians incorporate aspects of “traditional” Venda life and music while still trying to make their music marketable to a larger audience. Johannesburg, the “City of Gold” was never such for many popular Venda musicians as their music did not yield any gold for them. Two significant influences take center stage in realizing a wider market for popular Venda music. These influences reference melodic and rhythmic motifs from indigenous Venda music and children’s songs, while retaining a touch of “homegrown” in the music. Interviews with several popular musicians and an analysis of music indicates cultural relevancy in popular Venda music quoting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The positive effects of music education on the physical, spiritual, and mental development of children have been indicated by many studies. During preschool education, which is thought to be the basis of schooling, accurate and effective teaching of music lessons is crucial for the developmental processes of children. As one of the sub)branches of music education, singing is the first skill to be taught to children since their infancy. The aim of this research is to determine which songs are frequently used by teachers in preschool music education lessons. The study is conducted in the general survey model, one of the qualitative research methods, and is an example of a phenomenology pattern. To determine the first five songs that preschool teachers frequently use in music lessons and to analyze the points they attend to while determining these pieces, the semi-structured interview method was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 41 preschool teachers who were teaching in the provinces of Çankırı and EskiĢehir in the 2021-2022 academic year. During the data analysis stage, the content analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used. In accordance with the data obtained, it is revealed that the preschool teachers have their students trained in 106 different songs, and as a result of the analysis of these songs, the first five songs are "Red Fish", "Sculpture", "Dinosaur", "Apple Wolf" and "Walnut Man". When the common features of the first five songs are examined, it has been concluded that all of them are entertaining, many of which are about animals, and have rhythms and lyrics that attract children's attention. This study investigated (1) whether children's songs could be potential sources of internal state information and (2) cross‐cultural/linguistic differences in the availability of such information. We coded for expressions of mental states and other internal states in 255 English songs, likely accessed by children in the United States, and 255 Japanese songs, likely accessed by Japanese children. The majority of the songs in both samples contained at least one internal state expression, with songs containing four to five tokens and two types of internal state expressions on average. Japanese songs had more types of internal state expressions than English songs when comparing the two samples in proportion scores that controlled for the length of songs. However, differences between English and Japanese songs were negligible in the absolute frequency of tokens and types of internal state expressions, with the exception that Japanese songs were richer in ambiguous internal state expressions. This paper focuses on the use of children's songs in learning Kiswahili language in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. Usually, songs serve different purposes including transmission of knowledge, values, and language. It argues that children's songs serve as a means for learning Kiswahili and indigenous culture. The study was conducted at Msewe, Kimara and Changanyikeni nursery schools located in Ubungo municipality of Dar es Salaam. The data was collected using interviews, observations, discussion, and documentation. In this empirical research, the study analysed the Kiswahili songs, lyrics and associated information collected with the children at these schools. With recourse to the participant and arousal theory, the study found that, apart from learning word sounds and singing, songs help children to learn pronunciation and application of words found in songs in their day-to-day communication. The tunes and rhythms of these songs support the children's acquaintance with Kiswahili words. Furthermore, the songs' lyrics enables children to construct Kiswahili sentences and structures, thereby enhances their learning of Kiswahili language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

The paper presents a manual classification model, the Classification Model for the categorization of Children's Songs (Model CMCS) for the selection of children's songs based on the proposed criteria found in studies about the selection of children's songs, on music theoretical background, and on findings from cross-cultural studies about (dis)similarities in children's songs. A step-by-step procedure comprising four levels for the classification of songs is explained and applied in the first testing, employing two musical experts for the evaluation of three different songs. The results have shown that the Model CMCS is transparent (understandable), applicable, and useful and will be tested in the next stage on a larger number of songs and involving more musical experts. An improved version of the Model CMCS could be used in the future as a framework for an automatic classification model for the selection of children's songs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Over in the meadow... there lives a wonderful array of animals and their young. This traditional folksong probably originated in the United Kingdom in the sixteenth century. Over in the Meadow has not only served as a song to teach counting and rhyming, it is also a delightful introduction to the wonderful natural world that we share with our animal friends. Now lavishly illustrated by Marissa Napoletano and collected by John M. Feierabend, this song is sure to delight current and future generations. The fully notated version of this song with all the words is included at the end of this book, along with a detailed history of the song. A beautiful take on a timeless story, this picture book is another wonderful chapter in the continuing legacy of a delightful, classic songtale.

- Abstract
The partnership between William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Seymour Sullivan and their canon of Savoy Operas is rightly lauded by all lovers of comic opera the world over. Gilbert's sharp, funny words and Sullivan's deliciously lively and hummable tunes create a world that is distinctly British in view but has the world as its audience. Both men were exceptionally talented and gifted in their own right and wrote much, often with other partners, that still stands the test of time. However, together as a team they created Light or Comic Operas of a standard that have had no rivals equal to their standard, before or since. That's quite an achievement. To be recognised by the critics is one thing but their commercial success was incredible. The profits were astronomical, allowing for the building of their own purpose built theatre – The Savoy Theatre. Beginning with the first of their fourteen collaborations, Thespis in 1871 and travelling through many classics including The Sorcerer (1877), H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), The Mikado (1885), The Gondoliers (1889) to their finale in 1896 with The Grand Duke, Gilbert & Sullivan created a legacy that is constantly revived and admired in theatres and other media to this very day.

The Music Pedagogy Workshop working within the Institute of Music at the University of Nyíregyháza has initiated several programmes related to music methodology, financed by EU funds. Within the framework of subproject entitled "Renewing the practice of teaching music in public education based on folk traditions," digital handbooks and teachers' books have been designed for the Grades 1 to 4 of primary schools. The present paper introduces the novel features of the material designed for Grades 1 and 2. It touches upon the issues of the relevant points in curricular regulations, the possibilities of the innovative methods of score notation and score reading, tailored to the age characteristics of students, and the new approach to teaching the musical elements connected to a selected song corpus. The basic concept in designing the material of the first two grades was the amalgamation of folk culture, including folk tales and children's game songs, and the world around children. The elements of the knowledge of the present and the past appear side by side in the individual thematic units. Interdisciplinarity also gets emphasised. The generative and creative music activities, the tasks aimed at developing receptive competences, games, and the application of graphic notation, targeting the development of fine motor skills and music literacy, have been designed to broaden the toolkit of music pedagogy for junior schools. Purpose of this study is to analyze the children's songs in the book 'Çocuklar ve Gençler İçin Şarkı Demeti' written by Muammer Sun, in terms of value education. In line with this purpose, a total of 70 children's songs in the book were analyzed in terms of 27 values set out in the Directive on Values Education of the Ministry of National Education (MNE). Being a qualitative study where document analysis method isused, data of the study consist of the lyrics in the book. Data of the study are demonstrated in tables, with the help of certain coding mechanisms in accordance with variables; such as processing of the values and frequency of use. The study concluded that out of 70 songs; 34 of them are in support of the values listed in the directive; 7 of values were not involved in these songs; and that 20 of them were highlighted, which corresponds to the majority of the values. This indicates that songs by Muammer Sun are effective in terms of the acquisition of social values by children. His songs are suggested to be utilized in every stage of education starting from the preschool age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Values provide unity and solidarity among the members of that society by directing the emotions, thoughts and behaviors of the society. Teaching these individuals to the individuals of the society at an early age allows them to be internalized and transformed into behavior. Values are also under the cultural umbrella of society. Including the values of the society in language teaching is important in terms of introducing the cultural elements of that society. Because language teaching is a cultural interaction. Four children's songs, which are given as examples, were examined. It is explained what values these songs reflect. Information about teaching as a foreign language at an early age, the use of songs in teaching Turkish as a foreign language at an early age, values in teaching Turkish as a foreign language and the place of values in Turkish children's songs has been given. In the research, document review, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. — brincam sozinhos...
