This article focuses on the lesbian romantic comedy film Saving Face, directed by Alice Wu and starring Joan Chen and Michelle Krusiec. The Brooklyn, New York transplant set her love story in New York City, which boasts so many immigrant neighborhoods that people can live there most of their lives without ever having to speak English. That is the case with the character Ma, a 48-year-old widow who lives with her parents and works as a beautician in Queens. The intent of Ma on finding a suitable husband for her daughter, Wilhelmina. But Wilhelmina, an ambitious young plastic surgeon, has no time for romance--until she meets Vivian, a beautiful ballet dancer who is also out and proud. The plot thickens when Wilhelmina comes home to find she has a new roommate--her mother, who has gotten pregnant by a man she will neither name nor marry. Her parents have kicked her out in order to save face. Wilhelmina wants to help, but coming out could mean losing face herself, so Wilhelmina keeps her mother in the dark, slighting Vivian in the process. It was important to Wu that the film be bilingual. Wu said a lot of people warned that she would never get a film made if half of it was in Mandarin. Finding actors who could speak Mandarin was a challenge. Wu drew on her own life for the emotional aspects of the relationship of Wilhelmina with Ma, but not the circumstances, Wu is careful to clarify. Her mom was not pregnant at 48. But when Wu came out to her in senior year of college, she basically said, she does not think Wu is gay, and she never wants to see Wu again. They did not talk for two years. But she never doubted her love for Wu. It had everything to do with her willingness to make changes in her own life to be happy.
