10. Noise reduction of automobile cooling fan based on bio-inspired design.

Abstract

This study aims to minimize the noise generated by automobile cooling fans. Fan blade structures with ridged surfaces based on bio-inspired principles are 3D printed and used to replace the conventional fan blades. The effect of the bio-inspired ridge structures on the noise reduction of the cooling fan is demonstrated by orthogonal experiments in a semi-anechoic chamber. Experimental results show that with an increase in the rotational speed, the effect of the surface textures on the acoustic performance of the cooling fan becomes more significant. For example, at a fan speed of 1750 r/min, all the bio-inspired blade designs reduce noise compared with the original fan and, in particular, the sound pressure level is reduced by 3.83 dB(A) for the design with a ridge width of 4 mm and a ridge pitch of 15 mm. Through variance analysis of the measured noise, the ridge pitch distance has the most significant impact on noise reduction under low speed conditions whilst, under high speed conditions, the ridge width has the most significant influence. In addition to the experimental studies, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the cooling fan are carried out to explain the mechanism of noise reduction for the ridged fan blades. When the fan runs, the horseshoe vortexes generated by the ridge structures disturb the flow of the boundary layer, reduce the influence of the fluid flow on the boundary layer, and delay the transition of the fan blade laminar flow to turbulence. It is also seen that there is a reduction of the intensity of the fan blade trailing edge vortices and the scale of the secondary vortices, thereby achieving the overall aim of noise reduction. Abstract

Multistage orifice tube in a letdown pipe line of nuclear power plant is used to produce high pressure drop at a nominal flow rate. The geometry dimension and the arrangement of each stage orifice are very important to satisfy a high pressure drop operation condition. The experiment method is applied to investigate the pressure drop characteristic for a six stages orifice tube. Comparing the effects of pressure drop regulating approaches through the outlet and inlet of an orifice tube, the test results show that reducing the diameter of orifice in the first stage in the inlet or the sixth stage in the outlet of orifice tube can both increase the pressure drop. However, the regulating through the inlet can enhance the pressure drop characteristic obviously. The caviation index is used to check the geometry of orifice tube and believe that the structure is acceptable and can also avert the cavitation of orifices.

Abstract

The present work formulates and analyzes the inhibitory effect of anti-angiogenic factor angiostatin excreted by the primary tumor on metastatic tumor angiogenesis, blood perfusion, and interstitial fluid flow in the tumor microenvironment by means of a numerical experiment. The simulation results demonstrate that angiostatin has an obvious impact on the morphology, growth rate, and the number of branches of microvascular network inside and outside the metastatic tumor, and angiostatin has the capacity to regulate and inhibit the formation of new blood vessels. Heterogeneous blood perfusion, widespread interstitial hypertension, and low convection within the metastatic tumor have obviously improved under the inhibitory effect of angiostatin, which are consistent with physiological observed facts. The simulation results may provide beneficial information and theoretical models for clinical research of anti-angiogenic therapy strategies.

15. Numerical investigation on flow-induced structural vibration and noise in centrifugal pump

Abstract

A full scale structural vibration and noise induced by flow was simulated by a hybrid numerical method. An interior flow field was solved by large eddy simulation firstly. The sliding mesh technique was applied to take into account the impeller-volute interaction. A sensitivity analysis on effects of near-wall grid size and sampling time on amplitude of pressure pulsations was performed to impose appropriate vibration exciting source. Computed modal of pump components was validated by experimental results, before the volute vibration and sound field were simulated using a coupled vibro-acoustic model. The numerical results indicated that the amplitude of pressure fluctuation, especially on those points located at near the volute tongue, strongly depended on near-wall grid size. The dominated frequency of the vibration velocity of volute was also blade-passing frequency (BPF), which was in according with frequency spectral characteristics of unsteady pressure fluctuation. Directivity distribution of radiation acoustic field excited by volute vibration was typical dipoles. This study shows that it is feasible to use the hybrid numerical method to evaluate the flow-induced vibration and noise generated in centrifugal pump.

18. Dynamic characteristics of centrifugal pump induced by fluid and motor excitation forces

Abstract

The combined dynamic characteristics of the centrifugal pump induced by the fluid and motor excitation forces are investigated in this paper. The coupling vibrations of a centrifugal pump during the operation are mainly caused by the fluid excitation and the motor excitation forces. The finite element model was constructed in this paper under the consideration of the fluid excitation which was obtained from the numerical simulation and the motor excitation force which came from the experiments; compared with the experimental results and well agreement, the components of the whole model were validated to be accurate enough for simulation. Applying the approach of the modal dynamics, the dynamic analysis was conducted to study the influence of the flow rate, the blade number, the exit installation angle and the outside diameter of impeller on the responses. The suggested optimal parameters were provided from the perspective of the vibration reduction. The results of the calculation are helpful to the designation and the safe operation of the centrifugal pumps.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the range of motion(ROM)and the stress variation in the intervertebral disc and the vertebral body on adjacent segments and the influence of force transmission mode after the dynamic cervical implant(DCI)surgery.Two types of surgery,DCI implantation and interbody fusion were used to establish the finite element model of the cervical C5,6segment degeneration treatment.The ROM and the adjacent discs and vertebral body stresses of two procedures under flexion,extension,lateral bending and axial rotation working conditions were analyzed.The results showed that ROM of the surgical segment in DCI model was well preserved and could restore to the normal ROM distributions(reduction of the amplitude was less than 25%),and the kinetic characteristics of adjacent segments was less affected.In fusion surgery model,however,ROM of the surgical segment was reduced by 86%-91%,while ROM,disc stress and vertebral stress of adjacent segments were increased significantly,and stress of the C5 vertebral body was increased up to 171.21%.Therefore DCI surgery has relatively small influence on cervical ROM and stress.The study provides a theoretical basis for DCI and fusion surgery in clinic.
