Abstract

The magnetic glassy state is a fascinating phenomenon, which results from the kinetic arrest of the first order magnetic phase transition. Interesting properties, such as metastable magnetization and nonequilibrium magnetic phases, are naturally developed in the magnetic glassy state. Here, we report magnetic glass property in the low spin state of Co3+ in EuBaCo2O5+{\delta} ({\delta} = 0.47) cobaltite at low temperature (T < 60 K). The measurements of magnetization under the cooling and heating in unequal fields, magnetization relaxation and thermal cycling of magnetization show the kinetic arrest of low magnetization state below 60 K. The kinetically arrested low temperature magnetic phase is further supported through the study of isothermal magnetic entropy, which shows the significant entropy change. The present results will open a new window to search the microscopic relation between the spin state transitions and the kinetic arrest induced magnetic glassy phenomena in complex materials.

Abstract

We investigate magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings [B. Koteswararao, et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 035141 (2014)]. Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, but the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi -one-dimensional magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (Cp), dielectric constant, measurements along with ab-initio band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures TN1=5.5 K and TN2=4.5 K, respectively. The analysis of chi(T) data gives an intra-chain coupling, J3/kB, to be about - 42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings (J1/kB and J2/kB). The hopping parameters obtained from LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in dielectric constant at TN1 and TN2 suggests the presence of magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. Abstract

Background: Superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SISCC) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) involving the anal canal are rare, and their surgical management involves local excision. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has recently emerged as a promising treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of ESD for SISCC and HSIL in the anal canal. Methods: All patients diagnosed with SISCC or HSIL in the anal canal who underwent ESD between November 2018 and May 2023 were included. Patient age, sex, pathology, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status, human papillomavirus (HPV) status, T stage, en bloc rate, and R0 resection rate were analyzed. Results: Ten patients, including two men and eight women, with a median age of 61 (51–68) years were enrolled. All patients were HIV-negative, but five (50%) were HPV-positive. Pathological examination showed tumor stage of two patients as T2, one as T0 of SISCC, and seven as Tis of HSIL. The median specimen and tumor sizes were 24 (6–65) mm and 18 (6–55) mm, respectively. The en bloc and R0 resection rates were 100% and 80%, respectively. No severe complications occurred and no recurrence was observed at the follow-up (median follow-up period, 9 (1–35) months). Conclusions: ESD is a reliable and minimally invasive procedure that enables more individualized treatment options for specific groups. As we were limited by the length of the observation period, the long-term performance of ESD for SISCC and HSIL involving the anal canal requires further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Distortion modes and ferroelectric properties in hybrid improper ferroelectric Sr3(Sn,Zr)2O7 ceramics.

Abstract

In the present work, the distortion modes and ferroelectric properties of Sr3(Sn1−xZrx)2O7 (x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) ceramics with double-layered Ruddlesden–Popper structures were investigated. The amplitudes of three distortion modes for the ferroelectric phase deviated from the aristotype one were quantified using the symmetry-mode approach adopted in Rietveld refinement against x-ray diffraction patterns. The remanent polarization and the coercive field decreased with increasing the content of Zr4+ cations. The decline of polarization should attribute to the nonpolar secondary phase, while the suppression of a coercive field may connect with the decreased amplitude of the rotation mode. The Curie temperatures increased linearly with increasing x value in Sr3(Sn1−xZrx)2O7 ceramics, inducing from the decline of a tolerance factor. A typical first-order improper ferroelectric phase transition was determined using a differential scanning calorimetry measurement and dielectric characterization. From the present work, a straightforward way to quantify the amplitude of a distortion mode for the ferroelectric phase was given, and the ferroelectric properties could be effectively tuned by substituting the cations at the B site in the Sr-based hybrid improper ferroelectrics. Abstract

A new model was first proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of strip foundations under transient flows on the basis of the kinematic approach of limit analysis. To describe the collapse process, a symmetrical collapse mechanism was generated by discretization technique following the associated flow rule. A layer-wise summation method was developed to calculate the internal dissipation rate. The theoretical results of this paper are given in terms of some assumptions: (1) both soils and fluids considered in this study were regarded to be noncompressible; (2) the hydraulic conductivity in an unsaturated state was equal to that in a saturated state; and (3) the slope of the soil–water characteristic curve was assumed to be constant through the whole transient infiltration process. A series of comparisons with the theoretical results and experimental data were established to verify the reliability of the new approach proposed by this paper. Based on the numerical results and discussions, the key conclusion can be drawn as follows: the ultimate bearing capacities saw a relatively large decrease under transient flows, especially for strip foundations embedded in silt soil, however, the bearing loads for foundations in sandy soil tended to be steady throughout the whole infiltration process. Abstract

Ca3Ti2O7 with a Ruddlesden–Popper structure has received great scientific attention due to its high ferroelectric polarization. However, the optimization of hybrid improper ferroelectricity is still a challenging issue. In the present work, the remarkably improved ferroelectric polarization has been achieved in B-site co-substituted Ca3Ti1.8Al0.1Nb0.1O7 ceramic. The improved ferroelectric polarization in this ceramic stems from the higher ferroelectric activity of Nb5+ cations and a larger amplitude of oxygen octahedral distortion. Moreover, the more saturated electric hysteresis loops together with the higher ferroelectric polarization can be achieved under a higher electric field and at a lower frequency. The first-order phase transition nature is proved by the thermal hysteresis, while the Curie temperature is directly proportioned to the tolerance factor. The present work provides an effective way to improve the ferroelectric properties without declining the Curie temperature in Ca3Ti2O7-based hybrid improper ferroelectricities. 21. Source localization for illegal plastic burning in Malaysia via CFD-ANN approach

Abstract

Illegal plastic burning has caused several environmental and health impacts on society. It is important to locate the burning source quickly to mitigate the emission before people are exposed to the toxic gases. However, the conventional methods of source localization such as trained dogs, sensors, and infrared camera are limited and less efficient. This research paper was conducted to study the combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and machine learning method on the plastic burning location assessment. 8 sensors were placed in a 530 m radius around the residential area in Telok Panglima Garang city in the computational domain to detect the concentration of the toxic gases released (methane and benzene) from 12 different possible illegal burning locations. A total of 65 training data sets and 7 validation sets under different burning locations, wind speeds, and wind directions were obtained using CFD approach. According to the simulation, it was found that the sensor readings vary under different atmospheric conditions. Besides, the wind direction and wind speed will affect the direction of gas dispersion and mixing effect, which results in different sensor values. The data sets obtained from the generated simulation were used for the machine learning process in the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to study the trend for each case. In this report, the ANN model includes 16 input, 4 hidden, and 12 output neurons. The model can achieve 85.71% validity with an average error of 3.86%.

Abstract

This paper presents numerical results in comparison with experimental data of nominally static aeroelastic polars of the second ASDMAD (Aero-Structural Dynamics Methods for Airplane Design) campaign conducted in the European Transonic Windtunnel. For the simulation the modular solver package SOFIA combined with the DLR solver TAU on the fluid side and the in-house solver FEAFA on the structural side is applied. First the experimental setup and the aeroelastic solver are introduced, followed by a detailed analysis of the results. Comparisons of pressure distributions and the global lift coefficients are presented for variations of angle of attack, Mach number and aerodynamic loading factor. Abstract

Hybrid improper ferroelectricity, which is induced by the coupling of oxygen octahedral rotation and tilt in oxide materials, has great potential to create single-phase multiferroic materials with intrinsic electric field-controlled magnetism. Based on previous experiments with bi-layered Ruddlesden-Popper Sr-based materials, hybrid improper ferroelectricity in Sr3Hf2O7 was investigated by first-principle calculations in the present work. The results show that the ferroelectric A21am phase has the lowest energy among all possible phases, indicating that it is the ground state. The spontaneous polarization calculated by the Berry phase approach and Born effective charge model is approximately 4.6 μC/cm2, in agreement with those reported for other Sr-based compounds. Compared to Ca3Ti2O7, the smaller polarization of Sr3Hf2O7 is attributed to the negative contribution of the HfO2 layer to global polarization. The possible ferroelectric switching path was determined using the nudged elastic band method. The energy barriers of the two four-step paths across the non-polar Pbnm and Pnab phases are almost the same, and they are the lowest energies among all possible paths. Competition between these paths can help us understand complex phase transitions in analogous compounds. In summary, hybrid improper ferroelectricity was predicted in Sr3Hf2O7 for the first time, and the possible ferroelectric switching paths were determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Glycemic traits are used to diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic health. To date, most genetic studies of glycemic traits have focused on individuals of European ancestry. Here we aggregated genome-wide association studies comprising up to 281,416 individuals without diabetes (30% non-European ancestry) for whom fasting glucose, 2-h glucose after an oral glucose challenge, glycated hemoglobin and fasting insulin data were available. Trans-ancestry and single-ancestry meta-analyses identified 242 loci (99 novel; P < 5 x 10-8), 80% of which had no significant evidence of between-ancestry heterogeneity. Analyses restricted to individuals of European ancestry with equivalent sample size would have led to 24 fewer new loci. Compared with single-ancestry analyses, equivalent-sized trans-ancestry fine-mapping reduced the number of estimated variants in 99% credible sets by a median of 37.5%. Genomic-feature, gene-expression and gene-set analyses revealed distinct biological signatures for each trait, highlighting different underlying biological pathways. Our results increase our understanding of diabetes pathophysiology by using trans-ancestry studies for improved power and resolution.

Abstract

Glycemic traits are used to diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic health. To date, most genetic studies of glycemic traits have focused on individuals of European ancestry. Here we aggregated genome-wide association studies comprising up to 281,416 individuals without diabetes (30% non-European ancestry) for whom fasting glucose, 2-h glucose after an oral glucose challenge, glycated hemoglobin and fasting insulin data were available. Trans-ancestry and single-ancestry meta-analyses identified 242 loci (99 novel; P < 5 × 10−8), 80% of which had no significant evidence of between-ancestry heterogeneity. Analyses restricted to individuals of European ancestry with equivalent sample size would have led to 24 fewer new loci. Compared with single-ancestry analyses, equivalent-sized trans-ancestry fine-mapping reduced the number of estimated variants in 99% credible sets by a median of 37.5%. Genomic-feature, gene-expression and gene-set analyses revealed distinct biological signatures for each trait, highlighting different underlying biological pathways. Our results increase our understanding of diabetes pathophysiology by using trans-ancestry studies for improved power and resolution.
