IntroductionIn recent years, Volcanoes National Park has seen a rise in its wildlife population, primarily due to the diligent efforts of the Rwandan government in safeguarding endangered species, notably the mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei spp. beringei). This population growth has led to a pressing need for more expansive habitats, ensuring these creatures have ample space, sustenance, and shelter for their wellbeing. Consequently, there are planned park expansion activities on the horizon. However, before initiating this expansion, a critical prelude involves identifying potential threats, particularly toxic substances stemming from agricultural activities in the surrounding environment of Volcanoes National Park.MethodsTo address this concern, a comprehensive study was conducted, aimed at pinpointing potential toxic hazards and assessing the awareness of the local population regarding the harm these hazards pose to wildlife species. Data was collected from individuals with no prior knowledge of the study using a pre-tested questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into three sections: socio-demographic issues, potential toxic hazards assessment, and a section to determine awareness and risk of potential toxic hazards to humans, animals, and the environment. Respondents were selected based on specific criteria, which included being 18 years or older and residing within the National Volcano Park (NVP) area.ResultsThe study's findings revealed four main categories of potential toxic hazards, which include household chemicals, pharmaceutical products, agricultural pesticides, and poisonous plants. These hazards could jeopardize the health and survival of wildlife species if they consume or come into contact with them. Furthermore, the study exposed an inadequacy in the knowledge and skills of the local community in preventing these toxic hazards, which can result in death of wildlife species and ecosystem contamination and degradation.ConclusionStudy results also underscored the significance of education and training in enhancing the awareness of local communities concerning these toxic threats. Therefore, it is imperative to implement immediate measures to mitigate the adverse effects of these toxic hazards on wildlife species, especially in light of the planned park expansion.

The prevalent use of lithium-ion cells in electric vehicles poses challenges as these cells rely on rare metals, their acquisition being environmentally unsafe and complex. The disposal of used batteries, if mishandled, poses a significant threat, potentially leading to ecological disasters. Managing used batteries is imperative, necessitating a viable solution. The remedy lies in implementing robust battery recycling systems. This paper explores diverse disposal methods, particularly focusing on their relevance within the automotive industry, while also acknowledging other potential applications. By adopting a closed-loop approach, this system not only addresses the waste issue but also circumvents environmental costs linked to the extraction and production of new raw materials. Consequently, it not only resolves waste concerns but also mitigates environmental strain and conserves resources. It was described the use of used batteries as energy storage devices. This is an innovative approach to extend battery life cycle, reduce waste and provide cost-effective energy storage solutions. This practice is particularly important for large-scale energy storage systems, such as those used in conjunction with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy. The work pays significant attention to battery thermal regimes, which refer to the various temperature conditions in which batteries operate. These systems significantly impact battery performance, lifespan, safety and efficiency. Understanding and managing these thermal regimes is critical to optimizing the use of batteries in a variety of applications, including electric vehicles, portable electronics and renewable energy storage. One of the main threats to aquaculture is represented by microbial pathogens, causing mass mortality episodes in hatcheries, which result in huge economic losses. Among the many disinfection methods applied to reduce this issue, the use of chemicals and beneficial microorganisms (probiotics) seems to be the most efficient. The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of two of them: a chemical, peracetic acid (PAA), and a probiotic, Phaeobacter inhibens. Tests were run on microalgae of the species Isochrysis galbana (var T-ISO). For both remedies, the microalgae survival rate and final cell concentration (cell/mL) were monitored. PAA analysis tested six different concentrations of the chemical: 7.5 µg, 10 µg/L, 20 µg/L, 30 µg/L, 40 µg/L, and 60 µg/L. Meanwhile, P. inhibens was tested with a concentration of 104 CFU/mL. Analysis for both the remedies was conducted on a laboratory scale using glass flasks, and on an industrial scale inside photobioreactors (PBRs). Among all the treatments, the one with PAA dosed with a concentration of 60 µg/L gave the best results, as the culture reached a final density of 8.61 × 106 cell/mL. However, none of the remedies involved in the experiment harmed microalgae or their growth. The results match perfectly with the condition requested for the tested remedies: to obtain an optimal breakdown of pathogens without interfering with culture growth. Summary: Background: Whilst single chemical exposures are suspected to be obesogenic, the combined role of chemical mixtures in paediatric obesity is not well understood. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the potential associations between chemical mixtures and obesity in a population‐based sample of Canadian children. Methods: We ascertained biomonitoring and health data for children aged 3–11 from the cross‐sectional Canadian Health Measures Survey from 2007 to 2019. Several chemicals of interest were measured in blood or urine and paediatric obesity was defined based on measured anthropometrics. Using quantile‐based G computational analysis, we quantified the effects of three chemical mixtures selected a priori. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic and environmental factors identified through a directed acyclic graph. Results are presented through adjusted relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: We included 9147 children. Of these, 24.1% were overweight or obese. Exposure to the mixture of bisphenol A, acrylamide, glycidamide, metals, parabens and arsenic increased the risk of childhood overweight or obesity by 45% (95% CI 1.09, 1.93), obesity by 109% (95% CI 1.27, 3.42) and central obesity by 82% (95% CI 1.30, 2.56). Industrial semiconductor electrodeposition plating cells require recirculation of process chemicals with consistent flow and minimal contaminants to prevent defects from developing during film deposition. This manuscript investigates how recirculation nozzle quality and nozzle machining can affect bath chemical uniformity. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are utilized to visualize bath chemical velocities based on variable nozzle conditions in four case studies. Results show that strict quality control of inlet nozzles, in conjunction with proper mounting angles, induce laminar bath flow. Greater fluid uniformity and laminar flow translate to a reduction of in-line defects and increased wafer yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is a well-known source of titanium (Ti) for the formation of titanium nitride (TiN) barrier material in the semiconductor interconnection process; however, the reaction of by-products with airborne molecules can cause unexpected pump trips and equipment breakdown from the by-product powder build-up. Plasma scrubbers are used to decompose by-products, but hydrogen chloride (HCl) and nitrogen oxides are produced during and after the process. The process mechanisms change when the temperature and applied power of the heat source change. In this paper, we study the influence of the reactor temperature and applied power to the heat source on the decomposition capacity of TiCl4 in a plasma pretreatment system (PPS). We examine the effect of the temperature and heat source power to understand the reaction mechanisms for the composition and decomposition of gaseous species with chemical reactions through simultaneous methods. We analyzed the system with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and chemical kinetic simulation to investigate the changes of the system mechanism. Subsequently, we achieved results for the correlation between the temperature of the reactor, power applied to the heat source, composition and decomposition of species, and chemical reaction mechanisms. Macrophages play an essential role in the innate immune system by differentiating into functionally diverse subsets in order to fight infection, repair damaged tissues, and regulate inappropriate immune responses. This functional diversity stems from their ability to adapt and respond to signals in the environment, which is in part mediated through aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)-signaling. AHR, an environmental sensor, can be activated by various ligands, ranging from environmental contaminants to microbially derived tryptophan metabolites. This review discusses what is currently known about how AHR-signaling influences macrophage differentiation, polarization, and function. By discussing studies that are both consistent and divergent, our goal is to highlight the need for future research on the mechanisms by which AHR acts as an immunological switch in macrophages. Ultimately, understanding the contexts in which AHR-signaling promotes and/or inhibits differentiation, proinflammatory functions, and immunoregulatory functions, will help uncover functional predictions of immunotoxicity following exposure to environmental chemicals as well as better design AHR-targeted immunotherapies. Alternatives assessment is a methodology used to identify, evaluate, and compare potential chemical and nonchemical solutions with a substance of concern. It is required in several chemicals management regulatory frameworks, with the objective of supporting the transition to safer chemistry and avoiding regrettable substitutions. Using expert input from symposium presentations and a discussion group hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment, four case examples of the use of alternatives assessment in regulatory frameworks were evaluated and compared: (1) the US Environmental Protection Agency Significant New Alternatives Policy (USEPA SNAP), (2) authorization provisions in the EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation, (3) the California (CA) Safer Consumer Products (SCP) Program, and (4) the Safer Products for Washington (WA) Program. Factors such as the purpose of the alternatives assessment, the timeline of actions, who completes the assessment, the role of stakeholder engagement, and the regulatory response options for each policy are outlined. Through these presentations and expert discussions, four lessons learned about the use of alternatives assessments in regulatory policy emerged: (1) the goal and purpose of the regulatory framework significantly affects its ability to result in safer substitution, (2) existing frameworks struggle with data access and insufficient stakeholder engagement, (3) some frameworks lack clear decision rules regarding what is a safer and feasible alternative, and (4) regulatory response options provide limited authority for enforcement and do not adequately address options where alternatives are unavailable or limited. Five recommendations address these lessons as well as how the application of alternatives assessment in regulatory settings could have greater impact in the future. This synthesis is not meant to be a comprehensive policy analysis, but rather an assessment based on the perspectives from experts in the field, which should be supplemented by formal policy analysis as policies are implemented over time. The present investigation was carried out at Central Research Farm (CRF), Department of Entomology, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences. Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India during Kharif season of 2023-24. The experiment was laid in Randomized Block Design with eight treatments replicated thrice along with untreated control plot. Results revealed that all the treatments were found significantly superior over control. The lowest mean larval population after first and second sprays respectively was recorded in Spinetoram 11.7% SC @ 0.9 ml/l i.e., 3.64 and 1.64, while Neem seed kernel extract @ 5% with mean larval population of 4.84 and 2.79 was least effective among all the treatments. The next best effective treatments were emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 0.4 g/l, chlorantraniliprole 17.8% SC @ 0.4 ml/l, and flubendiamide 39.35% SC @ 0.24 ml/l. The highest yield was recorded by spinetoram 11.7% SC @ 0.9 ml/l (51.50 q/ha) followed by emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 0.4 g/l (49.00 q/ha) and were on par with each other. The next best treatments with higher yield were chlorantraniliprole 17.8% SC @ 0.4 ml/l (44.40 q/ha) followed by flubendiamide 39.35% SC @ 0.24 ml/l (43.46 q/ha) which were on par with each other. The best and most economical treatment with higher benefit cost ratio was spinetoram 11.7% SC @ 0.9 ml/l (1:2.58), followed by emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 0.4 g/l (1:2.56), chlorantraniliprole 17.8% SC @ 0.4 ml/l (1:2.20) and flubendiamide 39.35% SC @ 0.24 ml/l (1:2.25). In the current study, the effect of lethal concentrations of drug solutions and chemicals against pupae of Culex pipiens molestus mosquitoes was investigated after 24 hours and up to 3 days of the experiment using different concentrations. Regarding the drug solutions, the concentration of 100 ppm of the niclosamide drug solution showed a 100% lethal effect on the second day of the experiment, and the value of LC50 was 113.7 ppm. The concentration of 800 ppm of the sulfasalazine drug solution caused the death of all the pupa, with a death rate of 100% on the third day of the experiment, and the value of LC50 was 854.7 ppm. The concentration of 2000 ppm for both piperazine and isoniazid medicinal solutions caused a death rate of 100% on the second and third day of the experiment, respectively, and the LC50 value for both piperazine and isoniazid was 2220.7 and 2273.0 ppm, respectively. The concentration of 14,000 ppm of the drug solution 4-aminoantipyrine caused the death of all pupal mosquitoes on the second day of the experiment, and the value of LC50 was 14,360.0 ppm. As for solutions of chemicals, the concentration of 150 ppm of the chemical solution ethyl salicylate showed a lethal effect on all pupal mosquitoes, with a 100% death rate on the second day of the experiment, and the value of LC50 was 176.2 ppm. The death rate of mosquito pups reached 100% when using chemical solutions of thymol, sulfamic acid, sulfanilamide, and 2,6-dihydroxytoluene at concentrations of 240, 2000, 2500 and 10,000 ppm, respectively. The value of LC50 for each of thymol and sulfamic acid was, Sulfanilamide and 2,6-dihydroxytoluene 352.1, 2940.8, 2582.5 and 10750.0 ppm, respectively.

The study determined the chemical composition and acceptability of organic bath soap among students in Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions. Mixed method research design was used for the study. Population was 46 which comprised all Home Economics students from the Department of Vocational Education. In-home use questionnaire was used for data collection. The study produced two samples of turmeric bath soap. Findings showed that the chemical compositions of the turmeric soap samples are in accordance with the specifications of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) with toilet soap specifications of pH ranging from 9 to 11, total fatty matter ranging from 60-75 gm and total free caustic soda ranging from 0.05 to 0.08 %. Findings showed that the sensory evaluation attributes for colour, smell, consistency foam ability and skin sensitivity were accepted after use for three months as the samples were skin friendly, safe to use without side effects. It was recommended that turmeric body soap and turmeric face gel can be produced in large quantities for commercial purpose as a form of income generation for unemployed graduates.

Abstract Background Injury due to ingestion of harmful chemicals has become an area of concern globally. In South Africa, paraffin has been widely implicated in multiple health outcomes, including severe ingestion injuries. A specific category of such injuries is those that are self-inflicted. A significant proportion of self-inflicted ingestion is reported to be intentional, although intentionality for self-infliction may be difficult to determine. Nonetheless, the identification of key explanatory risks and demographic factors of self-inflicted ingestion may contribute towards a better understanding of self-inflicted and harmful chemical ingestion injuries. Methods This study used secondary data that had been collected on burn injuries of all causes, including those due to the ingestion of harmful chemicals, from a sample of South Africans from low-income communities close to major metropolitan centres. The current analysis focused on the risks for self-inflicted ingestion injuries and used logistic regression to determine risks for self-inflicted ingestion as differentiated from ingestion due to the actions of another person (other-inflicted ingestion) by sex and age cohort of the victim, and the presence of alcohol, by examining paraffin ingestion versus that of other chemicals. Results The overwhelming majority of ingestion injuries (92.1%) were self-inflicted. The current findings indicate that sex (with females almost twice as likely to present with self-inflicted ingestion), age cohort (with those aged 18–29 and 30–44 years old four times more likely affected than older adults), presence of alcohol (twice as likely present than amongst individuals reporting ingestion injuries inflicted by others), and chemicals other than paraffin (three times more likely) are key explanatory factors for an increased risk for self-inflicted ingestion of harmful chemicals. Conclusions The study empirically confirms the role of several key risk factors in what remains a relatively unreported and understudied phenomenon, but which appears to align with the demographic and risk profile reported for suicidal injuries through chemical ingestion, i.e. intentional self-inflicted ingestion. The findings may contribute towards improved safety policies on the availability and sale of chemical products and more focussed community interventions for at-risk individuals such as females and young people. It also flags the importance of assessing for alcohol use and alcohol use disorders at hospital admission of self-ingestion injuries.

The article presents the laboratory and field tests results for the effectiveness of the fungicide Protazox SC (suspension concentrate) against anthracnose and other lupin diseases. The tests have been done in Bryansk region in 2020–2022. The study objects were seedlings and vegetative plants of the narrow-leaved lupin Vityaz variety. The effectiveness of protective and curative properties of the fungicide Protazox SC (azoxistrobine + protioconazole + dipheconazole, 200 + 125 + 60 g/l) was tested for 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 l/ha consumption rates under laboratory conditions. The biological effectiveness was evaluated according to the number of infected seedlings grown in paper-and-plastic rolls compared to the control variant (fungicide free). The maximal rate of the fungicide – 1.5 l/ha – had the highest biological effectiveness of protective and curative properties (98.7 and 97.4 %); this corresponds to the effectiveness of the reference fungicide Kolosal Pro with the using rate of 0.4 l/ha. In a field test the fungicide Protazox at using rate of 1.5 l/ha was applied for lupin crops at the growing stages of “1-2 pairs of true leaves” and “bud formation” of lupin. The fungicide effectiveness was evaluated compared to the control without treatment. Biological effectiveness of the tested fungicide against anthracnose made 95.8 %, it was 4.5 % higher than of the reference fungicide Kolosal Pro. To the stage of “shiny pod” the number of anthracnose infected pods treated with the fungicide Protazox decreased to 1.5 % compared to 26.5 % in the control variant. Fusarium infection of plants decreased from 24.6 % in the control to 12.0 % in the variant with the fungicide. The spread of gray and white rot on beans decreased by 5.0 and 6.7 times, respectively. The viability of productive plants by the harvesting period increased by 41.3 %. Thanks to the application of the fungicide Protazox SC (1.5 l/ha) the significant narrow-leaved lupin seed yield rise of 0.91 t/ha was obtained (LSD05 = 0.04); the cost recovery was 2.56 rubles.

Background: The use of chemicals in academic laboratories is a major concern for the health and safety of individuals and the environment. Academic institutions are currently developing safe work procedures to ensure compliance with standard criteria and laboratory accreditation. However, it is unclear to what extent the activities of research laboratories are safe for the personnel and environment. Therefore, this research produces a chemical hazard assessment assembling data and knowledge on the health, safety, and environmental aspects of chemical applications in laboratories. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 in five research and teaching laboratories. The collecting data tool was a checklist, developed in 7 sections with 125 items and completed in all laboratories understudy. Then, the research team conducted a risk assessment for the 10 most widely used chemicals in the laboratories. In the end, the risk categorization was conducted based on the risk matrix of ISO 31000. Results: Determining risk levels associated with using chemicals may provide a reasonable way to assess hazards and suggest controls for working in laboratories. Most non-compliance hazards were linked to inadequate waste disposal processes, the potential for poisoning and illness effects, and emergency actions. Conclusion: It is suggested to conduct knowledge, attitude, and practice studies of the students, staff, and faculties to provide appropriate level of training courses in the academic laboratories.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of synthetic compounds, many of which are persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT). The sheer number of PFAS makes a substance-by-substance based approach to regulating this group unfeasible. Given the known risks of many PFAS, a precautionary approach (i.e., the Essential Use Concept; EUC) has been called for, whereby any substance is assumed to be harmful and should be phased out, unless it is shown that: (a) the use of this substance is necessary for health and safety, or is critical for the functioning of society and (b) there are no available technically and economically feasible alternatives. While experts, including chemists and toxicologists, are well-placed to assess the second criteria, determining what is necessary for the "functioning of society" requires a wider consideration of societal beliefs and preferences and greater involvement of various interested and affected parties, especially those whose voices are less heard but may be most vulnerable. The aim of the current paper is to provide a preliminary framework and research agenda outlining why and at what points in the essential use decision-making process broader societal perspectives are required, and how such 'social data' can be collected. The ultimate goal is to improve chemicals management by supporting citizens in becoming more informed and engaged participants in relevant debates and policies, including in how to operationalise the EUC. In this study, the 4,9 diazafluoren-9-one ligand and [Y(Daf)2Cl3.OH2] complex were synthesized. The interaction of this complex with DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The molecular docking method was used to confirm the experimental results, investigate the type of interaction, and determine the binding site. The binding constant and Stern -- Volmer constant were calculated using spectroscopy techniques. The binding constant of the Y-complex with DNA and BSA obtained using the UV-vis technique was 1.61 × 105 M-1 and 0.49 × 105 M-1, while that obtained using the fluorescence method was 3.39 × 105 M-1 and 3.63 × 105 M-1, respectively. The results of experimental and theoretical data showed that the interaction between the yttrium complex and DNA and BSA is driven by the hydrogen bond and van der Waals interaction, respectively. The yttrium complex communicates with DNA via the groove interaction. This complex has high binding energy with bovine serum albumin. In addition, the molecular docking results showed that the complex binds to the IIA subdomain of BSA (site I). Finally, anticancer activity of the yttrium complex was studied on MCF-7 and A549 cell lines by using the MTT method. The formation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in petroleum reservoirs by anaerobic microbial activity (through sulfate-reducing microorganisms, SRMs) is called biogenic souring of reservoirs and poses a risk in the petroleum industry as the compound is extremely toxic, flammable, and corrosive, causing devastating damage to reservoirs and associated surface facilities. In this paper, we present a workflow and the tools to assess biogenic souring from a pragmatic engineering perspective. The retention of H2S in the reservoir due to the reactions with iron-bearing rock minerals (e.g., siderite) is shown in a theoretical approach here and supported with literature data. Cases are provided for two fields under secondary (waterflooding) and tertiary flooding with microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). The use of the Monte Carlo method as a numerical modeling tool to incorporate uncertainties in the measured physical/chemical/biochemical data is demonstrated as well. A list of studies conducted with different chemicals alone or in combination with various biocides to mitigate biogenic souring provides an overview of potential inhibitors as well as possible applications. Furthermore, the results of static and dynamic inhibition tests using molybdate are presented in more detail due to its promising mitigation ability. Chemical upcycling of plastics provides an important direction for solving the challenging issues of plastic pollution and mitigating the wastage of carbon resources. Among them, catalytic oxidative cracking of plastics to produce high–value chemicals, such as catalytic oxidation of polyethylene (PE) to produce fatty dicarboxylic acids, catalytic oxidation of polystyrene (PS) to produce benzoic acid, and catalytic oxidation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to produce terephthalic acid under mild conditions has attracted increasing attention, and some exciting progress has been made recently. In this article, we will review recent progresses on the catalytic oxidation upcycling of plastics and provide our understanding on the current challenges in catalytic oxidation upcycling of plastics. The PELAGIE mother-child cohort study, conducted in western France, aims to examine the impact of prenatal exposure to chemicals on pregnancy outcomes and child health. The study followed over 3,000 pregnant women and their newborns, collecting extensive data on chemical exposures and various health outcomes. The cohort is part of a European network and welcomes collaborations. Ventilation may lead to a deterioration in indoor air quality in urban environments located close to roads. Understanding the differences in the chemical compositions of size-resolved particulate matter (PM) in indoor air and outdoor air could aid in assessing the health impacts of air in these settings and establishing relevant regulation policies. In this study, indoor and outdoor size-resolved PM was collected from an office in Beijing in summer (between 5 and 25 July 2020) and winter (between 5 and 31 January 2021). Its chemical components, including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, chlorine, organic matter (OM), elemental carbon (EC), crustal materials (CM), and heavy metals (HM), were analyzed. The mean levels of indoor and outdoor PM2.1 and PM9 were found to be much higher than those in the guidelines for PM2.5 and PM10 outlined by the National Ambient Air Quality Standard. Moreover, the levels of PM2.1 and PM2.1–9 mass were higher outdoors than they were indoors. The size distributions of mass concentrations were shown to be bimodal, peaking at 0.43–0.65 μm and 4.7–5.8 μm, respectively. The most abundant chemicals were OM, nitrate, and sulfate for PM2.1 and OM, CM, and nitrate for PM2.1–9. We found higher percentages of sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, EC, and HM in smaller-size fractions of PM. Additionally, positive matrix factorization showed that biomass burning, secondary inorganic aerosol, coal combustion, dust, traffic, and industrial pollution were the main sources of PM during the study period. The greatest non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic hazards were found at 0.43–0.65 μm in summer and 2.1–3.3 μm in winter. Our results indicate that size-resolved PM of ambient origin may infiltrate buildings near roads to varying degrees, resulting in negative health effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The strand of environmentalism that focuses on biodiversity as produced by the ecosystem places natural agency beyond human control. In Melanesia, where plants, animals, and men cannot radically be distinguished from one another, this standpoint seems too radical. Agronomic studies have shown that Melanesian gardens possess a profusion of biodiversity superior to the so-called natural one. This article therefore attempts to show that Melanesian commonality between people and plants and the correlative association of plants with humans are at the root of this profusion. In sum, rather than placing nature outside the reach of humans, the Melanesian case suggests that biodiversity is best served by human ritual actions during which vegetal materialize the social relations which link the different people. The chemical composition, phytochemical contents, and antibacterial potentials of the Eryngium Thyrsoideum Boiss. aerial parts were evaluated. The RP-HPLC-DAD method were applied to determine the phenolic and flavonoid contents of the extract. The hydrodistillation method with a Clevenger apparatus was used to isolate the essential oil, and the analyses of the oil was performed using GC-MS. Using the disc diffusion method and the broth microdilution assay, three gram-negative and six gram-positive bacterial strains were tested to assess the antibacterial effect of oil. The total flavonoid content of the extract was 0.81 ± 0.05 mg of quercetin equivalent per gram of dry plant materials, while its total phenolic content was 0.24 ± 0.01 mg of gallic acid equivalents per g of dry plant materials. According to the phytochemical screening results, phenols, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, and saponins were detected in the ethyl acetate, n-hexane, and methanolic extracts. Results showed the existence of rutin, quercetin, and benzoic acid in the methanolic extract and revealed 46 compounds that constitute 93.07% of the obtained oil were recognized. Besides, 2,3,6-trimethyl benzaldehyde (24.15%), trans-4,10-epoxy-amorphane (15.55%), longifolene (13.72%), germacrene D (4.76%), 2,3,4-trimethyl benzaldehyde (4.67%), cis-chrysanthenyl acetate (3.3%), caryophyllene oxide (3.26%), and sesquicineole (2.78%) were identified in the oil as the major compounds. The oil showed in vitro significant inhibitory effect on Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, resulting from its high proportion of sesquiterpenes. Regarding the different bioactive compounds and the antibacterial properties of Eryngium thyrsoideum, this plant can be applied in cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans are often exposed to a variety of toxic substances (including some drugs, herbs, environmental pollutants); all these heterologous substances can result in metabolic changes in organism. Clarifying their metabolic details will help to understand the beneficial and toxic effects of those heterologous substances. Traditional toxicology research tends to focus on toxic doses and time rather than on mechanisms and detoxification methods. Compared with other omics methods, metabolomics has unique, dynamic, and phenotypic characteristics. Similarly, metabolomics can link the interaction between genes and the environment; it represents both the downstream output of the genome and the upstream input of the environment, and reflects the interactions between biological system and environmental stimulation. It highlighting not only biological mechanisms but also closely related to the phenotype of biological events, which is widely employed in toxicology studies presently. Therefore, strengthening toxicological research based on metabolomics can help better understand the mechanisms of action and toxicological effects of toxic substances. Thus, present review systematically summarized and discussed the current application status of metabolomics approaches in toxicology, which might contribute to provide a deeper understanding of the processes and mechanisms of toxicity caused by related chemicals and herbal medicines, thereby reducing the occurrence of damage and providing technical reference for toxicity research. Accurate characterisation of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) binder is an important prerequisite to successfully use RAP in new pavements. The conventional characterisation method is performed on the extracted and recovered RAP binders using harmful chemical solvents. A previous study proposed an enhanced mortar testing method that eliminates the use of chemical solvent by establishing a relationship between binder and mortar properties. As a follow-up, the objective of this study was to examine whether the enhanced mortar method is applicable at both high and low temperatures. The enhanced mortar method was evaluated using six RAP sources with distinct binder characteristics by comparing high and low temperature true grades measured from recovered RAP binders. Satisfactory results substantiate that the mortar methods can be used as an alternative to the solvent method, which lays a solid foundation for pursuing environmental and economic benefits associated with proper RAP usage. Associations of perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate exposures with bone mineral density (BMD) in adults have not previously been studied. This study aimed to estimate the associations of individual and concurrent exposure of the three chemicals with adult BMD. Based on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011–2018), 1618 non-pregnant adults (age ≥ 20 years and 47.0% female) were included in this study. Survey-weighted linear regression models were used to estimate individual urinary perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate concentrations with lumbar spine BMD and total BMD in adults. Then, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were conducted to evaluate associations of co-occurrence of the three chemicals with adult BMD. In all participants, nitrate exposure was inversely associated with lumbar spine BMD (β = − 0.054, 95%CI: − 0.097, − 0.010). In stratification analyses, significant inverse associations were observed in female and participants older than 40 years old. In WQS regressions, significant negative associations of the weighted sum of the three chemicals with total and lumbar spine BMD (β = − 0.014, 95%CI: − 0.021, − 0.007; β = − 0.011, 95%CI: − 0.019, − 0.004, respectively) were found, and the dominant contributor was nitrate. In the BKMR models, non-linear dose–response associations of nitrate exposure with lumbar spine and total BMD were observed. These findings suggested that environmental perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate exposure may reduce adult BMD and nitrate is the main contributor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative structure permeation relationship (QSPR) models have gained prominence in recent years owing to their capacity to elucidate the influence of physicochemical properties on the dermal absorption of chemicals. These models facilitate the prediction of permeation coefficient (Kp) values, indicating the skin permeability of a chemical under infinite dose conditions. Conversely, obtaining dermal absorption rates (DAs) under finite dose conditions, which are crucial for skin product safety evaluation, remains a challenge when relying solely on Kp predictions from QSPR models. One proposed resolution involves using Kroes' methodology, categorizing DAs based on Kp values; however, refinement becomes necessary owing to discreteness in the obtained values. We previously developed a mathematical model using Kp values obtained from in vitro dermal absorption tests to predict DAs. The present study introduces a new methodology, Integrating Mathematical Approaches (IMAS), which combines QSPR models and our mathematical model to predict DAs for risk assessments without conducting in vitro dermal absorption tests. Regarding 40 chemicals (76.1 ≤ MW ≤ 220; -1.4 ≤ Log Ko/w o/w 3.1), IMAS showed that 65.0% (26/40) predictions of DA values were accurate to within twofold of the observed values in finite dose experiments. Compared to Kroes' methodology, IMAS notably mitigated overestimation, particularly for hydrophilic chemicals with water solubility exceeding 57.0 mg/cm3. Exposure to certain chemicals prenatally and in childhood can impact development and may increase risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Leveraging a larger set of literature searches conducted to synthesize results from longitudinal studies of potentially modifiable risk factors for childhood ADHD, we present meta-analytic results from 66 studies that examined the associations between early chemical exposures and later ADHD diagnosis or symptoms. Studies were eligible for inclusion if the chemical exposure occurred at least 6 months prior to measurement of ADHD diagnosis or symptomatology. Included papers were published between 1975 and 2019 on exposure to anesthetics (n = 5), cadmium (n = 3), hexachlorobenzene (n = 4), lead (n = 22), mercury (n = 12), organophosphates (n = 7), and polychlorinated biphenyls (n = 13). Analyses are presented for each chemical exposure by type of ADHD outcome reported (categorical vs. continuous), type of ADHD measurement (overall measures of ADHD, ADHD symptoms only, ADHD diagnosis only, inattention only, hyperactivity/impulsivity only), and timing of exposure (prenatal vs. childhood vs. cumulative), whenever at least 3 relevant effect sizes were available. Childhood lead exposure was positively associated with ADHD diagnosis and symptoms in all analyses except for the prenatal analyses (odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 1.60 to 2.62, correlation coefficients (CCs) ranging from 0.14 to 0.16). Other statistically significant associations were limited to organophosphates (CC = 0.11, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.03–0.19 for continuous measures of ADHD outcomes overall), polychlorinated biphenyls (CC = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.02–0.14 for continuous measures of inattention as the outcome), and both prenatal and childhood mercury exposure (CC = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.00–0.04 for continuous measures of ADHD outcomes overall for either exposure window). Our findings provide further support for negative impacts of prenatal and/or childhood exposure to certain chemicals and raise the possibility that primary prevention and targeted screening could prevent or mitigate ADHD symptomatology. Emerging contaminants are chemical compounds present in the environment, particularly in aquatic systems, which are currently not subjected to regulatory measures. This problem occurs when pollutants are introduced into aquatic systems through multiple sources, including wastewater discharge, agricultural runoff, and atmospheric deposition. Products that contain emerging contaminants are classified into 3 categories: pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Several organisms are affected by the accumulation of the chemicals in water bodies. These emerging contaminants have been found to alter the behaviour and development of fish and organisms that form the base of the aquatic food chain. Additionally, they interfere with the ability of organisms to reproduce and grow appropriately. In the present study, a series of experiments were performed using Stigeoclonium nanum microalgal biomass to determine the removal efficiency of one of these contaminants, that is, caffeine. Experiments were performed in duplicate using 20 mL tubes. A 500 mg L-1 caffeine solution was prepared and applied at different doses at the same time as a known amount of dry biomass. The tubes were maintained at a constant temperature of 24 ± 2 °C with a stirring speed of 400 rpm. Optical absorbance readings were recorded, and calculations were performed to determine the removal percentage for each caffeine dose. At concentrations of 50, 100, and 125 mg L-1, 100% removal was reached, while at 250 and 500 mg L-1, removal was reduced to 79.76 % and 49.66%, respectively. These data indicated a continual decrease in caffeine up to 125 mg L-1, suggesting a possible saturation point for the dry biomass used over this concentration range. Furthermore, these results emphasise the necessity of conducting adsorption isotherms to understand the relationship between caffeine concentration and its removal efficiency using microalgal biomass. This could lead to the optimisation of contaminant removal, especially at higher concentrations. Although the microalgal biomass of S. nanum appears to be effective in removing caffeine at moderate concentrations, more comprehensive experiments surrounding adsorption isotherms are required to enhance efficiency at higher concentrations. Fucosylation is an important quality attribute for therapeutic antibodies. Afucosylated antibodies exhibit higher therapeutic efficacies than their fucosylated counterparts through antibody‐dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) mechanism. Since higher potency is beneficial in reducing dose or duration of the treatment, afucosylated antibodies have attracted a great deal of interest in biotherapeutics development. In this study, novel small molecules GDP‐D‐Rhamnose and its derivatives (Ac‐GDP‐D‐Rhamnose and rhamnose sodium phosphate) were synthesized to inhibit the enzyme in the GDP‐fucose synthesis pathway. Addition of these compounds into cell culture increased antibody afucosylation levels in a dose‐dependent manner and had no significant impact on other protein quality attributes. A novel and effective mechanism to generate afucosylated antibody is demonstrated for biologics discovery, analytical method development, process development, and other applications. E-liquids contain combinations of chemicals, with many enhancing the sensory attractiveness of the product. Studies are needed to understand and characterize e-liquid ingredients, particularly flavorings, to inform future research and regulations of these products. We identified common flavor ingredients in a convenience sample of commercial e-liquids using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. E-liquid flavors were categorized by flavor descriptors provided on the product packaging. A Flavor Ingredient Wheel was developed to link e-liquid flavor ingredients with flavor categories. An analysis of 109 samples identified 48 flavor ingredients. Consistency between the labeled flavor and ingredients used to produce such flavor was found. Our novel Flavor Ingredient Wheel organizes e-liquids by flavor and ingredients, enabling efficient analysis of the link between ingredients and their flavor profiles and allowing for quick assessment of an e-liquid ingredient's flavor profile. Investigating ingredient profiles and identifying and classifying commonly used chemicals in e-liquids may assist with future studies and improve the ability to regulate these products. With the improvement of irrigation and transportation infrastructures, single tobacco cultivation has been converted into tobacco–vegetable double cultivation in Yunnan Province. High residual nitrogen (N) levels in soil before tobacco transplanting induced by the excessive N input during the vegetable cultivation season resulted in a reduction of economic income and the quality of flue-cured tobacco. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to describe the optimization of N management and to provide a better understanding of the mechanism of optimal N application rate on the economic benefit and quality of tobacco. A field experiment with six N application rates (0, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 kg N ha−1) was carried out with a randomized block design in 2021 and 2022 in Yunnan Province. The economic value and yield, intrinsic chemical and processing quality, leaf growth rate and agronomic characters were determined. Compared with the currently recommended 105 kg N ha−1 rate, 75 kg N ha−1 significantly increased the total economic value and superior tobacco yields, improved the integrated grade of chemical compounds and resulted in leaf midrib proportions in an appropriate range. The total economic value positively correlated with the superior tobacco leaf yields (R2 = 0.91, p < 0.001), while not with medium and inferior leaf yield. The daily leaf growth rate in prosperous growth stage significantly correlated with the yield of superior tobacco and reached its maximum at a N rate of 75 kg N ha−1. The sum of N application rate and soil residual N before transplanting correlated with the total economic value (R2 = 0.66, p < 0.05) and superior leaf yield (R2 = 0.64, p < 0.05), respectively. Based on the amount of soil residual N before transplanting, the optimal N application rate was 66 kg N ha−1 which was 39 kg N ha−1 lower than the currently recommended N rate (105 kg N ha−1). Our results highlighted that the technical consultants and farmers should adjust the N application rate appropriately according to the residual N amount before transplanting and optimize the water and fertilizer management especially in the prosperous growth stage. Freshwaters are highly threatened ecosystems that are vulnerable to chemical pollution and climate change. Freshwater taxa vary in their sensitivity to chemicals and changes in species composition can potentially affect the sensitivity of assemblages to chemical exposure. Here we explore the potential consequences of future climate change on the composition and sensitivity of freshwater macroinvertebrate assemblages to chemical stressors using the UK as a case study. Macroinvertebrate assemblages under end of century (2080–2100) and baseline (1980–2000) climate conditions were predicted for 608 UK sites for four climate scenarios corresponding to mean temperature changes of 1.28 to 3.78°C. Freshwater macroinvertebrate toxicity data were collated for 19 chemicals and the hierarchical species sensitivity distribution model was used to predict the sensitivity of untested taxa using relatedness within a Bayesian approach. All four future climate scenarios shifted assemblage compositions, increasing the prevalence of Mollusca, Crustacea and Oligochaeta species, and the insect taxa of Odonata, Chironomidae, and Baetidae species. Contrastingly, decreases were projected for Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera (except for Baetidae) and Coleoptera species. Shifts in taxonomic composition were associated with changes in the percentage of species at risk from chemical exposure. For the 3.78°C climate scenario, 76% of all assemblages became more sensitive to chemicals and for 18 of the 19 chemicals, the percentage of species at risk increased. Climate warming‐induced increases in sensitivity were greatest for assemblages exposed to metals and were dependent on baseline assemblage composition, which varied spatially. Climate warming is predicted to result in changes in the use, environmental exposure and toxicity of chemicals. Here we show that, even in the absence of these climate‐chemical interactions, shifts in species composition due to climate warming will increase chemical risk and that the impact of chemical pollution on freshwater macroinvertebrate biodiversity may double or quadruple by the end of the 21st century.
