Agentive steadfastness was identified as a potential trait marker with which to anticipate prognostically that a patient will persevere steadfastly and take congruent action in facing the demands of living. Taken as an enduring expression of personality, this study investigated agentive steadfastness among adult social media respondents (n = 511) in relation to temperament and character as captured in Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality. Participants recruited though snowball sampling on social media platforms, applied the 27-item Agentive Steadfastness Index (ASI) and the 240-item Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-R-240). Agentive steadfastness was statistically predicted by the Self-directedness (β = 0.634), Self-transcendence (β = 0.119), Harm Avoidance (β = -0.142) and the Reward Dependence (β = 0.071) scales, accounting for 63.3 % of the variance in one stepwise regression model. In another stepwise model for the TCI-R-240 subscales, the Purposeful (β = 0.359), Anticipatory Worry (β = -0.353), and the Responsibility (β = 0.259) subscales accounted for respectively 56.8 %, 11.2 % and 2.8 % of the variance in ASI scores. Results are limited to adult social media respondents who were willing to participate. Agentive steadfastness may serve as a trait marker of well-being and the good prognostic associations that have been established for high self-directedness, low harm avoidance, as well as resilience, and character strengths. Summary: Social workers, alongside many professionals in "caring" domains, often feel they are poorly represented in television dramas. This study draws on a 172-million-word database to consider how social workers and seven other professional groups (cop, doctor, nanny, nurse, priest, teacher, and therapist) are portrayed in English-medium TV programs in the period 2010–2017. IMDb plot summaries are analyzed, and 200 examples per profession (n = 1,600) are classified as negative, positive, or neutral. Employing the methodology of corpus linguistics, the study contrasts with previous research as the focus is on the language surrounding mentions of professionals rather than on visual depictions or characters' actions. Findings: The study evidences the prevalence of negative societal discourses around social workers as either judgmental bureaucrats or uncaring "childcatchers," contextualizing the findings through comparison with other professionals. The analysis also suggests that social work characters on TV—in common with those from other female-dominated professions such as nanny or nurse—are frequently referred to in terms of their sexual availability or physical appearance. Applications: Findings will have practical relevance for those interested in the recruitment, job satisfaction, and retention of practitioners, and in reducing the stigmatization of social workers and their clients. The innovative methodology employed in the study offers particular insights for social work researchers and also scriptwriters. The study evidences the ongoing need to support media professionals and the general public to better understand the challenges facing the profession and thereby reduce the tendency toward a culture of blaming individuals for society's failings. This commentary brings together thoughts on the papers in this special issue and integrates research on adolescent development, resilence, and positive youth experiences that promote character development. We apply the Protective and Compensatory Experieces (PACEs) framework to the papers in the special issue. Appropriately contextualizing measures of virtues while avoiding commons pitfalls of virtues assessment (e.g. socially desirable responding, lack of sensitivity to change) provides researchers immense challenges – especially in adolescent population. This article evaluates classic and, primarily, novel approaches to virtue measurement and provides recommendations for researchers and practitioners, focusing particularly on the methods used by those in this special issue. Such methods and measures include those that are more sensitive to change, context, and developmental period. The purpose of this study was to understand the developmental experiences that unfold in youth development contexts, and why they matter for character development. Drawing on pre- and post-program data provided by 846 adolescents (47% female, 63% youth of color), this paper empirically investigated the role of three developmental experiences―developmental relationships, critical reflection, and intrinsic program engagement―in promoting civic, moral, intellectual, and performance character strengths in a conservation context in the United States. Results provide robust evidence of the pervasive power of all three developmental experiences, and especially youth-adult developmental relationships and critical reflection, in promoting key elements of character. Specific suggestions are described for organizational action to invest strategically and systematically in these program features to support young people's character development. Character strengths-based interventions (CSBI) take various forms and integrate different ingredients into interventions. This study investigated the role of mindfulness in strengths development, directly comparing the effects of mindfulness-based strengths practice (MBSP) and a form of CSBI without mindfulness. Ninety-five participants were randomly assigned to MBSP, CSBI, and blank control groups. Participants' mindfulness, character strengths, strengths knowledge, strengths use, psychological well-being (PWB), and subjective well-being (SWB) were assessed before and after the intervention, and one month later. The results showed that MBSP and CSBI were equally effective in enhancing character strengths, strengths knowledge, and strengths use. MBSP was more effective in promoting mindfulness, PWB, and overall character strengths, while CSBI was more effective in enhancing participants' SWB. The development of strengths knowledge and strengths use served as serial mediators of the increase in character strengths, and the development of mindfulness served as the mediator of the increase in PWB. Positive psychology offers numerous evidence-based interventions to build character strengths, but most target adults, with fewer addressing the needs of adolescents. This special issue highlights research on the development of character strength interventions for adolescents in out-of-school settings. Because adolescents are embedded in multifaceted developmental systems, interventions to promote virtue must attend to the contextual features of the implementation environments. Accordingly, a scholar-practitioner model of research allows researchers to partner with practitioners who are experts on the contexts adolescents inhabit in their daily lives. Finally, theory and research suggest that virtue interventions are most effective when they attend to the cultivation of a beyond-the-self, transcendent purpose, but few do so because of the challenges of studying spirituality in pluralistic settings. The interventions examined in this special issue focus on how meaning-making opportunities and spiritual experiences affect a sense of connection to something bigger than the self to promote character development. Character strengths research has the potential to imply that youth have character deficits or moral failings that cause their problematic behavior. This ignores the impact of context, especially for youth who are members of historically marginalized groups in under resourced communities. On the other hand, framing youth who are members of underrepresented groups solely as products of oppression undermines their agency and the power of collective action. It may be possible to promote character development in a contextually relevant, culturally grounded way through a transdisciplinary, participatory action approach. We engaged in this work in three phases: goal specification; logic model identification; and intervention development and testing. Lessons learned included the need for intensive trust-building and identifying the limitations in scope and capacity. Overall, a transdisciplinary, participatory action approach is a promising strategy to overcome the existing bias in virtue development research and to leverage positive psychology to address health disparities. Building on the premises of Positive Psychology, this undertaking conducted a pilot study of the designed 14-session Positive Psychology Intervention (PPI) program established based on the character strengths and virtues (CSV) of persons who use drugs (PWUDs) to assess its usefulness, delivery details, and impacts. Conducted in one of the biggest Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines, 24 PWUDs were randomly selected by the program staff to participate in its pilot run while securing all necessary ethical guidelines and requirements. Via within-subjects pretest-posttest experimental design, the especially adapted and developed tools were used to assess the PWUDs' progress as they were facilitated by the said program. Results yielded significant improvements in the PWUDs' mental wellbeing (M = 1.29, SD = 0.35; t (21) = 9.30, P <.00001), life satisfaction (M = 1.82, SD = 0.24; t (21) = 9.89, P <.00001), and psychological functioning (M = 1.65, SD = 0.19; t (21) = 8.58, P <.00001). Moreover, the PWUDs regarded the designed PPI program very highly and experienced it with positive outcomes, especially for their CSVs. Further improvement of the said program centers around proper time allotment, number of participants in the program sessions, appropriate activities per session, including specific ice breaker games, activity materials needed, and the proper sequencing of each session. These data are used to improve the PPI program structures and components. Pertinent conclusions about the gathered data were drawn, and relevant recommendations were also thereby provided. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is a crop for potential development and cultivation in Indonesia because of its high tolerance for planting on marginal lands. The sorghum plant can serve as food, feed, bioenergy, and renewable materials. Sorghum exhibits numerous phenotypes; therefore, it is crucial to determine their suitability for various purposes. The ideotype of sorghum genotypes for biomaterial purposes is a recognized genotype with high lignin content and biomass. The Indonesian Agency for Research and Innovation has identified sorghum landraces with different lignin content in their germplasm. The agronomic parameters evaluation of these genotypes determined their biomaterial suitability purposes. The presented study showed that sorghum genotypes with different lignin content levels have variable biomass (plant height, stem diameter, leaf weight, and stem weight) and yield (panicle weight, length, and hundred-seed weight) attributing traits. The enhanced stem weight is the main contributor to total biomass in these sorghum genotypes. Stem weight positively correlated to a high lignin content and considerable broad sense heritability estimates. Therefore, these traits can become selection criteria for choosing sorghum genotypes for biomaterial purposes. The sorghum genotypes KS and G181 showed ideotype suitability for biomaterials. Character education is an early foundation for early childhood can be done through various activities one of them is a thousand-day program. The phenomenological research with this qualitative approach is shown to describe management activities in a thousand- day program to shape the character of early childhood in RA Diponegoro Gandasuli. The participants in this study are the head of RA Diponegoro Gandasuli, teachers and parents. The data from this study uses interviews, observations and documentation techniques. The instruments used for both interviews and observations are field records. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model data analysis technique which consists of the stage of data reduction, data display and verification. At the reduction of data is done data selection relevant to the purpose of research. On the data display is performed data presentation and on the verification is done analysis drawing conclusions. The results of this study showed that the management of a thousand-day program to shape the character of early childhood in RA Diponegoro Gandasuli was carried out by updating the four management functions, namely the function of planning, organization, implementation, and supervision. The one-thousand-year program at RA Diponegoro Gandasuli has been able to shape the character of children who have social concerns as well as the ability to communicate with one another in politeness and courtesy. Objective: Weight bias, or negative attitudes about larger bodies, is a prevalent issue associated with problems in psychological and physical health, as well as discriminatory behaviors and weight stigma. Literature is mixed regarding the efficacy of weight bias reduction efforts. This study sought to combine three elements that yielded promising results from previous studies (i.e., reductions in beliefs about controllability of weight, reductions in stereotypical beliefs, and promotion of empathy) in a reading‐based intervention to reduce weight bias. Methods: Participants (N = 319) were randomized to read a third‐person fictional narrative passage about a peer with obesity (intervention) or information on overweight and obesity (control). Results: Linear mixed models controlling for body mass index and gender indicated the intervention was effective in producing reductions in overall weight bias and beliefs about controllability of weight from baseline to 1‐month follow‐up, but significant differences were not found in the domains of bias related to character disparagement or physical unattractiveness. Discussion: This combination‐approach reading intervention is a promising strategy to reduce weight bias; however, future work is needed to more effectively target negative weight‐related attitudes pertaining to character and attractiveness. Public Significance Statement: A reading‐based intervention targeting controllability of weight, stereotypes, and empathy can produce reductions in overall weight bias compared with a control condition. Reductions in beliefs about controllability of weight were shown from the reading‐based intervention. These findings may inform the development of programs to reduce negative attitudes about weight, which could help enhance quality of life and reduce risk for several mental health issues. Although recent literature has emphasized the value of African-centered schools among Black youth, little is known about the factors that make Afrocentric schools successful. The current study examined experienced educators' perceptions of their PK − 8 Afrocentric schools using a qualitative focus group interview (n = 7). Drawing from care ethics and the Integrative Model for the Study of Stress in Black American Families, researchers identified three key themes: (1) the formative Influence of upbringing experiences inspiring many educators to work at Afrocentric schools; (2) educators' understanding of the utility of Afrocentric education as foundational to student development and building a community of care; and (3) the dual and synergistic influence of both racial and cultural socialization on educators' outlook of students' character development. Background: Although numbers of youth with disabilities (YWD) are increasing, this population continues to be poorly represented in psychological and developmental research. There is a demonstrated need to better understand identity development in YWD. Objective: The purpose of this review was to determine the applicability of a contemporary developmental model, positive youth development (PYD), for YWD. PYD describes six "Cs" that contribute to thriving in youth: competence, confidence, connection, character, caring/compassion, and contribution. We explored which "Cs" contribute to identity development in YWD, what appears to be unique, and how PYD could be adapted to better include this population. Method: Through a qualitative metasynthesis, we explored how PYD emerged across the qualitative literature from psychology and related fields for YWD. We coded 18 qualitative articles according to the original definitions of the "Cs" of PYD and tracked emerging constructs across included studies. Results: Findings reveal evidence for four out of six of the original "Cs" in YWD. Two emerging "Cs," coping and constraints, may be unique to this population. Conclusions: PYD may be applicable for YWD, but an expanded version may be more relevant to this group. The addition of newly defined "Cs" could contribute to a better understanding of positive development in YWD and other marginalized populations. Impact and Implications: This study evaluates existing literature on identity in youth with disabilities in a new way by evaluating an existing framework for development in youth, positive youth development (PYD), applied to a new population. Results suggest that in order for PYD to be relevant to "all youth," adaptation is needed based on identified emerging constructs, "Coping" and "Constraints," which may be unique to youth with disabilities (YWD). Modifying PYD to be more inclusive of YWD could have wide-reaching impacts on the fields of education, healthcare, youth programming, rehabilitation psychology, and psychology as a whole. What does it mean to be a good thinker? Which virtues work together in someone who possesses good intellectual character? Although recent research on virtues has highlighted the benefits of individual intellectual virtues, being an excellent thinker is likely a function of possessing multiple intellectual virtues. Specifically, a good thinker would both recognize one's intellectual shortcomings and possess an eagerness to learn driven by virtues such as love of knowledge, curiosity, and open-mindedness. Good intellectual character may only successfully manifest when individuals possess not just one or a few intellectual virtues, but a larger set of such virtues to different degrees. However, little is currently known about what combination of virtues are necessary for good thinking. We argue that it is important to identify and clarify the nature of the good thinker and outline a profile methodology for achieving this goal. This approach characterizes the good thinker in terms of a profile of multiple intellectual virtues. Understanding this profile can allow greater insight into the extent to which people possess such a profile, and the potential for societal benefits of educating for these qualities. Anti-corruption education is a character education program that aims to instill anti-corruption values in students. The difference in the implementation of anti-corruption education as an autonomous subject provides different learning experiences for students. This research aims to measure the quality of anti-corruption education using the Servqual instrument. The Servqual instrument was developed and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This research was conducted with an ex-post facto non-experimental design. The subjects involved were 156 students. Data analysis was carried out with the SmartPLS program. The results of CFA show that the instrument meets the fit criteria. Thus, the discriminant validity results have met the criteria, with a composite reliability (CR) value of 0.765 to 0.900. The results of the path analysis prove that three of the five Servqual constructs have a significant effect on the quality of anti-corruption education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The behavior of objects associated with general extended affine Lie algebras is typically distinct from their counterparts in affine Lie algebras. Our research focuses on studying characters and Cartan automorphisms, which appear in the study of Chevalley involutions and Chevalley bases for extended affine Lie algebras. Pre-trained language models (PLMs) aim to assist computers in various domains to provide natural and efficient language interaction and text processing capabilities. However, recent studies have shown that PLMs are highly vulnerable to malicious backdoor attacks, where triggers could be injected into the models to guide them to exhibit the expected behavior of the attackers. Unfortunately, existing research on backdoor attacks has mainly focused on English PLMs and paid less attention to Chinese PLMs. Moreover, these extant backdoor attacks do not work well against Chinese PLMs. In this article, we disclose the limitations of English backdoor attacks against Chinese PLMs, and propose the character-level backdoor attacks (CBAs) against the Chinese PLMs. Specifically, we first design three Chinese trigger generation strategies to ensure that the backdoor is effectively triggered while improving the effectiveness of the backdoor attacks. Then, based on the attacker's capabilities of accessing the training dataset, we develop trigger injection mechanisms with either the target label similarity or the masked language model, which select the most influential position and insert the trigger to maximize the stealth of backdoor attacks. Extensive experiments on three major natural language processing tasks in various Chinese PLMs and English PLMs demonstrate the effectiveness and stealthiness of our method. Respiratory therapists (RTs) frequently encounter death in their work with critically ill patients. Healthcare providers' attitudes toward death significantly affect their approach to caring for dying patients; however, there is a lack of knowledge on RTs' attitudes toward death. This study examines how the work environment and personal characteristics of RTs influence their attitudes toward death. Utilizing the Death Attitude Profile-Revised-Chinese questionnaire, a cross-sectional survey compared non-critical care RTs (non-CCRTs, N = 86) to critical care RTs (CCRTs, N = 85). Non-CCRTs displayed significantly lower scores in overall acceptance of death compared to CCRTs (p = 0.015) and a tendency to actively avoid thoughts about death (p = 0.005). CCRTs scored higher in "neutral acceptance" (p = 0.015), and non-CCRTs exhibited higher scores on items reflecting a negative attitude toward death. RTs with shorter professional tenures showed heightened fear of death and avoidance tendencies. Perception of life and death education correlated with higher "fear of death" and "death avoidance" scores (p = 0.001). The findings indicate that CCRTs demonstrate a more neutral acceptance of death. Additionally, experience, sex, mental health status, and life–death education exposure significantly influence RTs' attitudes toward death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to understand which character strengths are most important for people living with dementia and therefore which strengths-based psychological interventions could be most meaningful and acceptable. A participatory design, utilising Delphi methodology, was incorporated into an iterative three stage framework: (1) literature reviewed for Positive Psychology (PP) interventions and patient public involvement to define the character strengths; (2) modified Delphi (N = 10) identified which character strengths are most important for living with dementia; (3) focus groups (N = 14) explored which PP interventions are most acceptable and meaningful. Qualitative data from the focus groups was analysed using thematic analysis. Love, kindness and humour were deemed the most important character strengths for living with dementia. Qualitative data from the focus groups was captured in three superordinate themes: (1) lack of opportunity not capacity; (2) key considerations of PP interventions for people living with dementia; and (3) potential benefits of PP interventions. Love, kindness and humour come naturally to people with dementia, but people may lack social opportunities to use these strengths. Therefore, a PP intervention promoting positive emotion, social relationships and connection to one's values appears most meaningful and acceptable as this may provide a social context to use and maintain these strengths. Inspired by Aristotle and Goffman this article considers how the study of virtue acquisition may be pursued through an observational theorising about social interactions in institutions. Adapting Goffman’s and Harré’s notions of moral order and moral career, it proposes character education to be a dialogic process requiring negotiation between social actors over time. Taking part in educational institutions, learners learn to perform various roles in a manner by which virtues are to be attributed. But this is not all. Goffman’s and perhaps Aristotle’s accounts are arguably too ‘thin’ to allow for moral change, unless these processes themselves are mastered by learners and may be transcended by them. It is thus by applying the sociological imagination to the institutions we are in, the criticality necessary for true character is developed. The role of sociology in character education is therefore twofold: to inform educators in the creation of institutions and practices that transmit and manifest virtues; and, as an essential part of a virtue-ethics curriculum—giving moral agents the sensitising concepts necessary to understand, negotiate and mould the social frame. As with many popular texts promising templates for successful storytelling, The Writer's Journey claims that a singular story structure applies to all voices and circumstances, therefore funnelling every character journey into a 'universal neutral'. This article offers queer temporality as a lens through which to unravel the 12 steps of Vogler's hero's journey, informed by queer theory's critiques of the 8 steps of the heteronormative life journey. It joins other studies critiquing the paradigm from other standpoints, including Indigenous screen storytelling, gaming and interactive narratives, and for development of characters disenfranchised by gender and/or circumstance. Others note the model's increasing irrelevance as writers uncover its limitations for creative processes of story development. This article homes in on how studies of queer temporalities – rejecting 'dominant temporal logics' and 'chrononormativity', replacing 'straight time' with 'queer time', can further destabilise the hero's journey's dominance in story development by exploring the breadth of practices in creative writing and screen production beyond the universalising models. I recut an observational documentary about a woman called Bekti into a more conventional hero's journey for a broadcaster. The hero's journey narrative requires large obstacles to be overcome by the hero in their search for their ego. In this documentary the obstacle is connecting experimental science with communities with the aim to reduce dengue fever, and the hero's 'ego' is to be an effective communicator. Using the hero's journey style of narrative reduced the importance of the domestic aspects of Bekti's life because these scenes did not contribute to overcoming obstacles or finding ego. To explore these changes use feminist critique of the influence of the hero's journey on narrative structure and character creation. Alongside this, I use a decolonising lens to challenge the universality of the monomyth. I then bring into this debate work on value in the economy to explore how the hero's journey used in the recut documentary corresponds to neoliberal values. This critique adds to the current debates around heroic characters and story structures in non-fiction films via rethinking story in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

False beliefs pose significant societal threats, including health risks, political polarization and even violence. In two studies (N = 884) we explored the efficacy of an individual‐based approach to correcting false beliefs. We examined whether the character virtue of intellectual humility (IH)—an appreciation of one's intellectual boundaries—encourages revising one's false beliefs in response to counter‐information. Our research produced encouraging but also mixed findings. Among participants who held false beliefs about the risks of vaccines (Study 1) and the 2020 US Election being rigged (Study 2), those with higher IH explored more information opposing these false beliefs. This exploration of opposing information, in turn, predicted updating away from these inaccurate health and political beliefs. IH did not directly predict updating away from false beliefs, however, suggesting that this effect—if it exists—may not be particularly powerful. Taken together, these results provide moderate support for IH as a character trait that can foster belief revision but, simultaneously, suggest that alternate pathways to combat false beliefs and misinformation may be preferred. Papua, Indonesia, is a region of cultural and religious diversity. However, in facing social challenges, the development of youth character has become a critical issue. The Research and Development Centre for Religion, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, conducted a survey of secondary schools. In 2021, the high school student index in Papua Province was below the national average. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship and level of correlation between religiosity and integrity among youth in Papua. We employed Christian biblical figures as models to illustrate their methods of developing and maintaining moral and ethical attributes. The method used is a quantitative approach with descriptive and correlational techniques. The findings indicate a significant positive correlation (0.629) between the religious dimension and the integrity dimension. This demonstrates a strong relationship between these two dimensions. The conclusion of this study essentially implies that there is a beneficial and strong relationship between religious discipline and integrity. Globalization challenges national identity with global influences that disregard national borders and internal influences such as ethnic and regional ties. Pancasila is needed as a filter for new values to preserve local culture. This study explores the formation of the Profile of Pancasila Students in the Global Diversity dimension among 7th-grade students at Harapan Bangsa Outstanding Junior High School. This research used a qualitative method with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation. The research sample consists of 7th-grade students at Harapan Bangsa Outstanding Junior High School. The research instruments included interview guidelines, observation sheets, and related documents. The data analysis technique used was an interactive descriptive analysis by Miles and Huberman, which includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. The results showed that students can better explore, explain, and understand cultural diversity in Indonesia through active and interactive learning. Codebooks with small inner-product correlations are desirable in many fields, including compressed sensing, direct spread code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, and space-time codes. The objective of this paper is to present a class of codebooks and explore their applications in strongly regular Cayley graphs. The obtained codebooks are nearly optimal in the sense that their maximum cross-correlation amplitude nearly meets the Welch bound. We introduce the character of Thurston's circle packings in the hyperbolic background geometry Consequently, some quite simple criteria are obtained for the existence of hyperbolic circle packings. For example, if a closed surface X admits a circle packing with all the vertex degrees di ⩾ 7, then it admits a unique complete hyperbolic metric so that the triangulation graph of the circle packing is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of X. This criterion is sharp due to the fact that any closed hyperbolic surface admits no triangulations with all di ⩽ 6. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the uniformization theorem for closed surfaces with genus g ⩾ 2, and moreover, any hyperbolic closed surface has a geometric decomposition. Newspaper media plays a significant role in forming a public understanding of domestic violence. This article analyses 554 articles from 24 newspapers across Australian states and territories published between 2000 and 2020 that describe specific instances of domestic violence. It examines whether such violence is framed as a systemic issue or as a collection of individual events, as well as how such representations of perpetrators and victims displace both "blame" and "victimhood." Although positive aspects of reporting can be observed, the tendency within newspaper articles to blur distinctions between perpetrators and victims distorts the true scale of domestic violence in Australia. The shared worldview of the so-called “village” writers often obscures the questions regarding their differing evaluations of social reality, interpretations of historical changes, and understandings of humanity’s place in the world. In this context, the task of comparative analysis of their similar artistic solutions appears both relevant and novel. This article examines the case of different scales of a seemingly analogous plot situation. The stories analyzed are Vasily Shukshin’s “The Boots” and Boris Yekimov’s “A Pair of Autumn Shoes”. It is demonstrated that the protagonists of Shukshin and Yekimov manifest themselves within narratives of varying existential intensity, addressing distinct challenges. Despite the apparent similarity in plots, their narrative differences are evident. Shukshin’s characters understand how life should be, yet often deviate from their ideals, fearing kindness; thus, in the writer’s world, the existential is frequently devalued. Vasily Shukshin, who captures the disintegration of the existential within the hero’s inner world, illustrates in “The Boots” that overcoming the mundane is an act of heroism and a personal triumph. Conversely, Boris Yekimov places fundamentally different emphases: within a superficially similar situation, he addresses a transpersonal challenge. The essence of the plot realized in “A Pair of Autumn Shoes” serves to remind readers of spiritual and communal values that may be lost amid everyday concerns.
