Nel corso di campagne di archeologia preventiva effettuate sulla riva destra del Tevere vicino alla sua foce, sono state riportate in luce testimonianze della frequentazione umana in epoca preromana. In particolare intorno allo scomparso Stagno di Maccarese si sono individuate aree appartenenti all’Eneolitico ed al Bronzo Medio e Finale, mentre in prossimità del Rio Galeria è localizzato l’unico sito di età arcaica sino ad oggi noto nel territorio in questione. Particolare interesse riveste l’individuazione di un ampio e complesso sistema di dossi artificiali, posti sul margine sud-orientale dello Stagno ed appartenenti al Bronzo Finale, che costituivano siti di insediamento temporaneo – durante la stagione secca – legati ad attività produttive ed artigianali quali l’allevamento e la lavorazione di prodotti caseari, di tessuti, di materia dura animale (in particolare palchi di cervo). L’insediamento di epoca arcaica, pur mal conservato e di limitate dimensioni, testimonia un’occupazione del territorio, legata allo sfruttamento agricolo del suolo, in un’epoca in cui la sponda settentrionale del Tevere apparteneva ancora all’etrusca città di Veio. During the preventives excavations carried out on the right bank of the Tiber near its mouth, many traces of human presence during the pre-roman era have been brought to light. In particular around the Maccarese marshes have been discovered areas belonging to the Eneolithic period and the Middle and Final Bronze Age while near the Rio Galeria was also discovered the only existing site known today of the archaic period in this area. A point of interest was the discovery of a large complex of artificial mounds constructed on the south-east edge of the marshes of Maccarese during the Final Bronze Age. These mounds were temporary constructions used during the dry season for the productive activities and handcraft connected to livestock and they produced dairy, textiles and hard animal material (especially deer antler). The settlement of the archaic period, in a bad state of preservation and very small, bears witness to the use of territory for agricultural reasons in a period when the northern part of the Tiber still belonged to the Etruscan city of Veii.

Il volume raccoglie gli Atti del III Seminario ostiense, tavola rotonda internazionale ormai divenuta annuale presso l’École française de Rome, articolata, come nei seminari precedenti, in due sezioni. La prima, tematica, ha come oggetto Ostia e la riva destra del Tevere, e si apre con contributi che vanno dall’età protostorica (Bronzo recente e finale) all’età arcaica. Per il periodo romano, accanto alla presentazione di scavi recenti si segnala la ripresa delle ricerche nella Necropoli di Porto all’Isola Sacra, col riesame di alcune categorie di materiali, determinanti ai fini della cronologia, provenienti dalle esplorazioni sistematiche condotte alla fine degli anni ’80 del secolo scorso. La seconda sezione accoglie contributi di vario genere, alcuni dei quali approfondiscono aspetti del vastissimo, e ancora solo parzialmente esplorato, patrimonio epigrafico ostiense, nonché i risultati di scavi e di sondaggi stratigrafici recenti nel contesto della città, interessanti anche per chiarire meglio l’attitudine e il programma operativo degli archeologi al tempo del Grande Scavo del 1938-42.

L’analisi formale, funzionale e tipologica condotta sui materiali provenienti da uno dei dossi artificiali del sito « Le Vignole » Maccarese ha individuato un repertorio ceramico molto articolato, costituito da 15 forme in impasto bruno non tornito, riferibili soprattutto a contenitori per la conservazione o per la cottura e la manipolazione degli alimenti. La presenza prevalente di olle, dolii e coperchi, insieme a piastre, forni e fornelli mobili suggeriscono il carattere artigianale-produttivo del contesto ; tazze, ciotole e vasi biconici e le decorazioni presenti indicano l’appartenenza alla facies culturale di Tolfa e ad un orizzonte cronologico compreso tra la fine del XII e l’inizio del XI sec. a.C. Le produzioni attestate nell’altro sito preromano, posto sul conoide del Tevere, fanno pensare ad un sito a vocazione agricola, inquadrabile nel VI sec. a.C. sulla base dei materiali, riconducibili a forme di uso comune con scarsa prevalenza di vasellame da mensa. The morphological and functional analysis carried on the pottery brought to light in one of the artificial « hump » in Le Vignole site, identifies a relevant ceramic variety, composed by 15 shapes made in a handmade rough ware, which could be used for storing, cooking or preparing food. The prevalence of jugs, dolia and lids, with ceramic slabs and removable ovens, suggests the craftsmanship and productive character of the site ; cups, bowls and biconical vases and their decorative patterns can be referred to the Tolfa cultural horizon, end of the 12th-beginning of the 9th century BC. The pottery evidence (with a lot of utilitarian shapes and only a few tableware) found in the other pre-Roman settlement, localized on the Tiber conoid sediment, can be referred to a rural site, dated in the 6th century BC.

Trump’s election in the US (November 2016) is another episode of the ‘populist’ wave that is competing with left-wing and right-wing mainstream politics. This paper adopts a critical discourse perspective to find out why US voters decided to trust a rich and controversial businessperson who has often declared his contempt for politics and politicians. We try to outline, in terms of debate framing, some language features of Trump’s communication that proved to be effective in the electoral contest and may serve to explain his final election. Qualitative analysis, based on pronoun distribution, tenses, and naming, is integrated with a preliminary quantitative analysis of campaign communication through a corpus of Trump’s speeches (82 speeches, delivered from June 2016 to the acceptance speech delivered on November 9, 2016). This corpus is compared to the speeches delivered by Trump’s political contender to the White House, Hillary Clinton (36 speeches,delivered from July 28 to November 9, 2016). As a result, we can see that Trump’s informal style follows a clear strategy, which is the intention to trigger an emotional response from his audience in opposition to the political rationality of his rival.

Background: Despite patient interest in knowing whether diet is linked to multiple myeloma (MM), there is limited research on dietary patterns and MM risk. Two studies have assessed this risk, albeit with a small number of MM cases. The EPIC-Oxford cohort and Oxford Vegetarian study (65 MM cases) showed that fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans had significantly reduced MM risk compared to meat eaters. The Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (478 MM cases) showed a significantly increased MM risk in men with Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Pattern., Methods: The NIH-AARP Diet and Health study is a prospective cohort of 567,169 persons who completed a food frequency questionnaire in 1995-1996 and were followed until December 2011. Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015), Healthy Diet Score (HDS), alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED) and healthful Plant-based Diet Index (hPDI) scores were calculated using a priori defined methods and grouped into quartiles, with higher scores reflecting healthier eating patterns. We prospectively evaluated the association between pre-diagnosis dietary patterns and MM incidence in this cohort. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated using multivariate Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for age at study entry, sex, race, body mass index, education, and total energy intake (by residual method). Sensitivity analysis was conducted to assess reverse causality by excluding MM cases diagnosed within one year of follow-up., Results: Among 392,589 participants (after exclusions), a total of 1,366 MM cases (59% males; 92% non-Hispanic whites) were identified during the follow-up period. Analysis revealed a significant association between hPDI scores and reduced MM risk (highest vs lowest quartile, HR 0.85; 95%CI 0.73-1.0; p=0.043) (Table). In sensitivity analysis (1,302 MM cases), the association was no longer significant (HR 0.87; 95%CI 0.74-1.03; p 0.09) but trended in the same direction. This may be due to small sample size, given MM is a rare disease. HEI-2015, HDS and aMED scores were not associated with MM risk., Conclusions: A healthful plant-based diet was associated with reduced MM risk in the NIH-AARP cohort. These results will help oncologists and patients make informed choices about their diet.
