Abstract

Studies and reconstructions of past solar activity require data on sunspots as well as faculae/plage and network. Such data are also important for understanding the magnetic activity and variability of the Sun and Sun-like stars. The longest available direct faculae/plage datasets are white-light facular and Ca II K observations going back to 1874 and 1892, respectively. Prior to that time, the only direct data available are for sunspots. We reassess the relationship between plage areas and sunspot records (areas and numbers) since 1892, to allow reconstructions of facular/plage areas which can be employed for studies going further back in time, i.e. over the period when solely sunspot observations are available. We use the plage areas derived from 38 consistently processed Ca II K archives as well as the plage area composite based on these archives. We find the relationship between plage and sunspot areas and numbers to be well represented by a power law function. We further find that the relationships depend on the bandwidth and the solar cycle strength. The reconstructions with a power law relationship are in good agreement with the original plage area series, whereas employment of a cycle-strength-dependent relationship improves the reconstructions only marginally. Performing the same analysis on other previously published plage area series, usually derived from a single archive with diverse processing techniques, returns different results when using different time series. This highlights the importance of applying a consistent processing to the various archives and demonstrates the uncertainties introduced by using previously published series. Our results have implications for past solar activity and irradiance reconstructions as well as for stellar activity studies, which sometimes assume a linear dependence between plage and sunspot areas., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

6. An Environmental Education and Communication Project on Migratory Fishes and Fishing Communities

Abstract

This study aims at evaluating the environmental education (EE) and communication intervention for the valorization of migratory fish resources in an estuary of northern Portugal. The EE component intervention was implemented among Middle School pupils of that region. Students' knowledge was quantitatively evaluated with an experimental approach of pre-testing and post-testing, on the ocean and estuarine literacy (OEL) and biology of migratory species, such as sea lamprey. This study also analyzes the communication component developed via social media. Results of the EE component show an evident increment of OEL (p < 0.05). It is also highlighted that students had previous knowledge on issues that are not covered in the curriculum. Social media has shown to be an effective communication tool mostly among the scientific community (e.g., Ethnobiology). The research has various implications to OEL since it brings a new perspective towards the integration of ocean literacy in formal education; as well as the valorization of Students' local ecological knowledge and of inter-generational dynamics. This study contributed to promoting local biodiversity, OEL, and participatory local governance of these ecosystems.

Abstract

BackgroundGenetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility is widely used, but for many genes, evidence of an association with breast cancer is weak, underlying risk estimates are imprecise, and reliable subtype-specific risk estimates are lacking.MethodsWe used a panel of 34 putative susceptibility genes to perform sequencing on samples from 60,466 women with breast cancer and 53,461 controls. In separate analyses for protein-truncating variants and rare missense variants in these genes, we estimated odds ratios for breast cancer overall and tumor subtypes. We evaluated missense-variant associations according to domain and classification of pathogenicity.ResultsProtein-truncating variants in 5 genes (ATM, BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, and PALB2) were associated with a risk of breast cancer overall with a P value of less than 0.0001. Protein-truncating variants in 4 other genes (BARD1, RAD51C, RAD51D, and TP53) were associated with a risk of breast cancer overall with a P value of less than 0.05 and a Bayesian false-discovery probability of less than 0.05. For protein-truncating variants in 19 of the remaining 25 genes, the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the odds ratio for breast cancer overall was less than 2.0. For protein-truncating variants in ATM and CHEK2, odds ratios were higher for estrogen receptor (ER)-positive disease than for ER-negative disease; for protein-truncating variants in BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, RAD51C, and RAD51D, odds ratios were higher for ER-negative disease than for ER-positive disease. Rare missense variants (in aggregate) in ATM, CHEK2, and TP53 were associated with a risk of breast cancer overall with a P value of less than 0.001. For BRCA1, BRCA2, and TP53, missense variants (in aggregate) that would be classified as pathogenic according to standard criteria were associated with a risk of breast cancer overall, with the risk being similar to that of protein-truncating variants.ConclusionsThe results of this study define the genes that are most clinically useful for inclusion on panels for the prediction of breast cancer risk, as well as provide estimates of the risks associated with protein-truncating variants, to guide genetic counseling. 16. Assessing Climate Knowledge and Perceptions among Adolescents. An Exploratory Study in Portugal

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess climate change knowledge among high school students and their beliefs and perceptions about the climate crisis. A questionnaire composed of 43 closed-ended questions was applied to 219 students aged 15-18 in three schools located in the north of Portugal. The results show that participants declared having limited knowledge about the issue. Similarly, the research confirms the conclusions of other studies that identified generalized alternative representations of climate change. Our findings aim to offer data geared toward supporting and promoting a new way of conceptualizing and understanding climate change education (CCE) in formal education contexts in the Portuguese education system.

Abstract

Local institutions can be effective tools in engaging environmental education. Especially, Environmental Education Facilities/Centres (EFF) have a high degree of relevance in the Eixo Atlântico Region (Galicia, Spain and North of Portugal). This study investigates the EEF's capacity to improve social involvement and impact. A multiple case study strategy was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with directors from 29 facilities in Eixo Atlântico. The research reveals a high level of EEF social impact, which was optimized when employing strong partnerships, when clearly-defining the sociocultural objectives of the educational program, and when the local population was actively involved.

Abstract

This article outlines essential best practices for retro-digitized dictionary projects, using the ongoing MORDigital project (DOI 10.54499/PTDC/LLT-LIN/6841/2020) as a case study. The MORDigital project focuses on digitally transforming the historically significant Portuguese Morais dictionary's first three editions (1789, 1813, 1823). While the primary objective is to create faithful digital versions of these renowned dictionaries, MORDigital stands out by going beyond the mere adoption of established best practices. Instead, it reflects on the choices made throughout the process, providing insights into the decision-making process. The key topics emphasized include (1) the establishment of a robust data model; (2) the refinement of metadata; (3) the implementation of consistent identifiers; and (4) the enhancement of encoding techniques; additionally exploring the issue of structuring domain labelling. The article aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on best practices in retro-digitized dictionary projects and their implications for data preservation and knowledge organization. Abstract

In 2020, the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra will celebrate the 95th anniversary of its first spectroheliographic observation. Keeping a daily service of solar observations since then, making almost a century, led to one of the largest continuous solar data collections in the world. This long–term solar database is essential for studies where solar activity is involved. This work reviews the development of synoptic observations made at the Observatory of Coimbra since 1925 and presents a summary of some of the principal stages of the Observatory’s history since its founding in 1772. We refer the main technical improvements and present some perspectives for the near future. One of the most significant upgrades was the installation of a CCD camera in 2007. The transition from photographic emulsion to digital recording methods allowed the development of image analysis algorithms to process solar images and improved data sharing with other institutions. This upgrade enabled also to carry–out modern climate and space weather studies. This valuable advancement makes it possible to create a new catalogue of solar observations to be published in the future.
