Recently, the Royal Australia Air Force (RAAF) has embarked on a large-scale expansion of its air and space power capabilities to better achieve joint effects. The RAAF fleet currently comprises both legacy and advanced aircraft with differing maintenance requirements. In order to deliver air and space power effects, the RAAF needs to recruit, grow, and retain personnel with specialized aviation maintenance skills. The focus of this thesis is the enlisted aviation technical categories of Avionics, Aircraft, and Armament technicians, which represent approximately 15% of the RAAF’s full-time members. This thesis develops Markov models for time in service and time in rank to determine transition rates within this workforce and to predict future inventories until fiscal year 2030–31. These predictions are compared to a fictitious demand profile to determine the feasibility of the demand and system behaviors that need to be changed. A one-year time in service and one-year time in rank model perform well in predicting system behavior in recent years. The results show that the RAAF will not meet future demand for the aviation maintenance workforce by 2030–31, particularly at the E05 and E06 ranks. E03 personnel are leaving sooner in their time in rank, and retention rates are too low at E05 and E06 ranks. The RAAF either needs to adjust the future demand or attempt to modify the behaviors in this workforce; adjusting promotion rates is one lever to modify retention behavior. Complete surface mapping, combined with sample geophysical survey, has enabled a detailed examination of the layout of the Blanches Banques Camp for German World War I military prisoners. By combining the new survey data with surviving contemporary images, subsequent aerial photographs and an account by the camp designer, Major T. E. Naish, it is possible to understand the decision-making processes in constructing and maintaining the camp, and the constrained world in which the occupants spent several years of the war. This, one of the best-preserved World War I prisoner of war camps in the British Isles, can still be appreciated by walking over the dunes today, and deserves the highest level of protection for the future., McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research Society of Antiquaries

Locals of the Channel Islands have long perceived women who had relationships with soldiers during the German occupation as the lowest form of collaborator. The author challenges this perception through the life stories of two women: a Romanian Jew in hiding and the woman who sheltered her for the last eighteen months of the occupation. Both were in relationships with German soldiers. The families of these two women met for the first time at a recent commemoration in Jersey. The following examines the long-term impact of their “illicit” relationships on the lives of these women, and how they complicate narrow representations of the alleged “Jerrybag.”

This article explores the collection of Nazi or German militaria in the Channel Islands and the change in meaning that this practice has held for four generations of islanders from 1945 to the present day. Focusing on the role of children in building this trade in militaria, it examines why they have been the primary agents of collection and asks what meaning or value such objects hold for them. This article proposes the concept of ‘inherited nostalgia’ to explain the desire of the third and fourth generations for such objects. It also presents German militaria as ‘postmemorial objects’, and their display as a ‘postmemorial project’, as a way of understanding their meaning in this particular formerly occupied part of Europe.

This paper explores the constraints upon archaeologists who work in the field of heritage studies who encounter tales of haunting, or have their own experiences with ghosts, during fieldwork. The discipline lacks the terminology to describe, analyse or understand such experiences, leading to either omissions, embarrassed anecdotes at the end of ‘serious’ discussions of fieldwork, or talking in metaphors. Using the case study of the Channel Islands, this paper explores ways in which archaeologists can talk and write about ghosts through recent understandings of the concept of ‘heritage’, through a rejection of UNESCO’s definitions of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the adoption of the concept of ‘tangible intangibility’.

The impetus for this special issue of the International Journal of Historical Archaeology lie in the three seasons of excavation that took place at the forced labour camp of Lager Wick in Jersey between 2014 and 2016. The excavation was directed by Gilly Carr, funded by the British Academy in a joint project involving Gilly Carr and Marek E. Jasinski, and also involved the two guest co-editors, who were invited to dig in different years (Marek E. Jasinski in 2014, Claudia Theune in 2015, and paper contributor Ivar Schute in 2016). In addition the three guest editors of this special issue cooperated closely during excavations, surveys and workshops at the Falstad Camp site in Norway led by Marek E. Jasinski in 2010, 2014 and 2015. This special issue was provoked by the many conversations on both sites regarding, initially, the rules, guidelines and expectations produced by the many different regions and countries in Europe which dictate what is excavated and kept, and what is redeposited and carefully returned to the ground. This variation clearly had the ability to affect what was retained for study from camps in different countries, with a resulting knock-on effect upon what was published and / or included in exhibitions.

The theft of mundane items of material culture from the ground of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2015 by English schoolboys raises a number of questions about the value of similar items at this and other Nazi camps. This paper explores questions of value, interpretation, and the categorization of objects from such camps, before examining the case study of Lager Wick, a forced labor camp in Jersey. Here, the value of such objects was perceived locally according to criteria very different to those which are commonly applied by archaeologists and people who work in the sphere of heritage and Holocaust education.
