Drawing upon value theory, this study investigates both the enabling and disabling features of marketplaces for consumers in the disability market. Analysis of longitudinal qualitative data collected before and after the introduction of a new disability service provision scheme in Australia offer empirical evidence of such marketplaces that are both creating and destroying value for people with disability and their carers. In some instances, value creation and destruction can co-occur for individual consumers. These empirical insights lead to a theoretical conceptualisation of the marketplace as not being wholly disabling, but rather consisting of disabling and enabling factors. Understanding these factors allows service providers and policy makers to make adjustments in view of maximising value creation and minimising value destruction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From a critical refugee studies orientation, our article redefines care within the context of myriad forms of state violence impacting Southeast Asian post-war refugee communities. Research reveals how harm is compounded at every step of Southeast Asian refugee journeys: war, forced displacement, resettlement, family separation, inherited health conditions, and generational trauma. How do we reckon with refugee trauma without conceding to it as an unchangeable fact of our lives? What knowledge might we gain by attending to the everyday work of survival in refugee communities? To answer these questions, the authors conceptualize care through (a) abolitionist organizing, (b) queer kinship and affective labor, (c) historiographic caretaking, and (d) refugee reunion.

Care is a practice and form of labour making human survival and flourishing possible. This Symposium explores the place and work of care within housing movements, asking how care operates as a politics, an ethics, and a set of practices through which tenants survive—and ultimately seek to transform—the structural violence of capitalist housing systems. Situated in US cities with abiding associations with Blackness and indigeneity, papers in the Symposium examine housing movements that take care as the starting point. As we discuss in this introduction to the Symposium, in such movements, care operates as connective tissue across households and modes of difference; challenges relations of racial capitalism and settler colonialism that underlie dominant understandings of who deserves and can demand care; and drives calls for public care and experiments with non-propertised forms of ownership. Housing systems are care infrastructures, making housing movements a vital place for care work.

This commentary underscores the urgent issue of limited access to dermatologic care in rural areas, leading to adverse health outcomes. With only 10% of dermatologists practicing in rural America, the "rural mortality penalty" contributes to escalating morbidity and mortality. Disparities in dermatologist distribution, particularly in minority-majority counties with lower incomes, worsen health inequities. Despite these challenges, initiatives such as pipeline programs, rural university offices, rural dermatology residency tracks, teledermatology, and Project ECHO (a collaborative model of medical education and care) are promising. This commentary stresses the need for academic dermatologists to recruit more rural medical students and train more residents with a rural upbringing. This predicts future practice in such communities. Immediate action to address the widening rural dermatology gap is needed. The formation of the Rural Access to Dermatology Society, with its first meeting in the spring of 2024 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, is a key part of this process.

Background: The development of emotional and clinical communication is crucial for being a nurse. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influencing factors of emotional management and clinical communication competencies among nursing students, to inform strategies for enhancing the management and nursing care practices. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey. The study period was from December 1 to December 31, 2022, during which nursing students were the population of the survey. The assessments of the emotional management and clinical communication competencies of the nursing students were conducted using the validated Emotion Management Ability Questionnaire and the Clinical Communication Ability Scale, respectively. Results: A total of 356 nursing students were investigated in this study. The nursing students had moderate ability of emotional management and clinical communication. The emotional management ability was correlated with the clinical communication ability of nursing students (all p<0.05). The results of multivariate regression analysis indicated that gender, educational level and home place were the independent influencing factors on the emotional management ability in the nursing students (all p<0.05). Family structure, internship time and personality were the independent influencing factors for the clinical communication ability among the nursing students (all p<0.05). Conclusions: The competencies in emotional management and clinical communication among clinical nursing students warrant enhancement. It is imperative to implement tailored educational and training programs to optimize the development and performance of nursing students in their clinical training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, a world of carelessness was made visible. Public health guidelines against the spread of COVID-19 (e.g., school closures, staying home, social distancing) have substantially affected youth's health and well-being and highlighted the need for context-specific understandings of infection, risk, and care. Our research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the impacts of COVID-19 on boys and girls serving educational measures and placed in the custody of the juvenile justice system in Portugal during the pandemic. Sustained by the use of ethnographic principles and methods along with participatory techniques, this article uncovers complex entanglements between the public health measures to mitigate contagion and the dynamics that exacerbated socio-spatial dynamics of social exclusion and isolation, educational and (mental) health inequities, and lived and practiced forms of violence by youth-serving tutelary measures in Portugal's six educational centers. Following Tronto's feminist ethical–political proposal of care, I argue that COVID-19 became a lens to access youth care needs — self-care, care for others, care as essential work of nurturing affective trajectories and solidarities and promoting positive and non-violent relationships. By caring for youth stories, the engagement of researchers and professionals in this action-oriented research aimed to promote the enactment of practices of care with youth in the Portuguese detention centers as a way to positively affect their inhabited present, promote healthier lives and nurture the construction of caring and non-violent post-pandemic futures. Although urban theory has long championed the urban commons, it has said little about how the commons are to be sustained. This article argues for the centrality of an ethic of care in sustaining the commons. Drawing on ethnographic research with activists seeking to create an age-friendly neighborhood in Kilburn, London, I develop four interlinked claims about care and the commons: First, prevailing approaches to valuing the commons fall short of what is needed to ensure their survival. Second, there is an element of commoning that underwrites the value of all public resources in the city. Third, an ethic of care—involving an ethical orientation toward situated particularity alongside a commitment toward entangling diverse forms of care—is essential for sustaining such commoning. Critical smart city research has presented wide-ranging risks of technocentric urban development. One critique lies in the kinds of citizenship directed under smart urban paradigms, which do little to account for residents' practices of care. This paper is an ethico-onto-epistemological re-examination of smart cities through the lens of care practices specifically focusing on creative communities of practice. We use an enactivist empirical approach to help uncover experiences of sensemaking in the smart city held by three creative communities of practice in Helsinki. Through in-depth interviews with n = 22 urban planners, artists, and community space organizers, we assessed these groups' differing and overlapping sensemaking processes. Utilizing 5E sensemaking processes (embodied, extended, enacted, emotive, and embedded) as a flexible analytical framework, we identify and interpret their practices of care as ways of sensemaking in a developing smart urban environment. Our results depict terrains of care in which participation and citizenship in the smart city is not neutral, but embedded in affective engagement, navigating rules and institutions, and cultivation of joy and inspiration. We use our findings to discuss what these interweaving terrains of care mean for citizenship and transformational change in the smart city. Highlights: • We identify interweaving 'terrains of care' that can inform how cities can more effectively engage with citizens in transformative smart city development. • An undue emphasis on defining the smart city concept tends to reduce complexity regarding the practices that exist alongside it. • Citizenship in the smart city is not a neutral practice of participation, but rather embedded in care relations with one's surroundings. Policy and practice recommendations: The profession of smart urban planning is inherently embedded in networks of care relations, which can help promote the situated development of smart cities as a whole. This article examines how Amir, an Iranian paraplegic veteran of the 1980–1988 Iran–Iraq War, finds himself responsible for his dead friend killed during combat. Amir witnessed his friend Sohrāb dying and had his own body mutilated. Amir’s (re)engagement with Sohrāb is a form of commitment, an obligation that does not collapse their relationship in a uniform path, but rather imbues it with infinite possibilities. Inspired by the writings of Emmanuel Levinas, this article examines the living’s for-the-other response as the node of subjectivity between the living and the dead, a form of ethical undertaking constituted through responsibility. Amir’s responsibility for Sohrāb is not reciprocal; it is what his dead friend demands of him, an obligation that Amir cannot refuse. Responsibility is understood to be for-the-other, thus subjectivity is knotted in ethics as demonstrated by Amir’s sense of duty to care for his dead friend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on fieldwork in maternity wards in Tanzania, I argue that the partograph – a graphical representation of a pregnant woman’s labor – far exceeds its intended role as tracking and surveillance of labor progress. Through surveillance and its concomitant documentation, nurses, especially, also utilize this document to co-create care for themselves and their colleagues. These forms of care proliferate largely unseen by global health systems but are vital for understanding the meeting point of bureaucracy, surveillance, and care and the dynamics of maternity care in this and other lower resource settings. In this paper, we argue for greater recognition of young people’s contributions to environmental action through social and environmental justice. It draws on findings from research based on eleven organisations in the UK exploring young people’s connection with environment-related collective action and activism in the UK landscape. Building on theoretical arguments of ethics of care and implicit activism and capturing a range of practices of young people, the paper explores young people’s multiple framing(s) of activisms – towards the environment and each other.Drawing on the experiences of young people and facilitators within these organisations, we unpack the experiences and representation of minoritised groups in the climate movement and other forms of environmental engagement. The findings demonstrate thoughtful and effective approaches towards inclusion within the UK context and in terms of global climate justice but also highlight a need for more intersectional approaches and awareness of enduring barriers often relating to racialised identities. A necessary part of planetary justice is self-work, restoring or forming our being truthful, consistent, dependable, and accountable people. Planetary justice – so far typically associated with vast, geological scales of space and time – involves an intimate dimension, too. We can work on it wherever we are. Moreover, self-work and planetary justice intertwine historically and conceptually. The historical context for self-work involves the histories of violence that led to the breakthrough of the planetary as a category of thought about justice. In the past, the working class was perceived as a cohesive social and political subject, although this was never fully the case, and it is certainly less the case today. Class, in fact, is not just defined by economic attributes, but also by social, cultural and ethical ones. Care, understood either as work or values, is fundamental for better understanding class. The implications of the relationship between care values and class are yet not fully understood. In this article, building on David Graeber's intuition regarding the caring classes, we theorise and statistically explore the existence of a working-class care ethos by examining which socio-demographic and occupational groups share care values. Using European Social Survey (ESS) data and ordinal logistic regressions, we test to what extent self-perceptions of care for others are associated with occupational/working profiles and socio-demographic characteristics. We find that caring for others is a value shared, transversally, by an intersection of different individuals who experience a few conditions of subalternity in the context of patriarchal and racial capitalism; a left-wing political orientation and a background of political/union organising; some specific occupational profiles marked by interpersonal interaction; and, most significantly, by explicit forms of care work. We conclude by speculating that the concept of caring classes can be a useful one towards a fertile terrain of political struggle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Navigating whether to prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) requires that health practitioners approach a woman's individual life circumstances, and early menopause (EM) as a particularly intricate experience and condition. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 16 practitioners in Australia, this article examines the modalities of care that emerge in the nexus of EM and HRT. Early menopause emerges in participants' narratives as far from a 'unitary' medical condition, but rather one that reaches across other embodied changes for women which may be moderated by HRT. Thus, different modes of care and tensions surface, and we suggest that these constitute an oscillation between 'caring for' and 'caring with' in medical practice. This oscillation combines experimentation with and adjustment of HRT, while contending with responsibility, risk and choice, and shared, knowledgeable care. Our goal is not to neatly split 'caring for' from 'caring with'. Rather, we discuss how ambiguities of care circulate through a complex diagnosis and its treatment options. We argue that care, in this context, manifests as potentiality and as a set of flexible practices that at times cannot be fully disentangled from issues of choice and control, and HRT itself. In this article, we explore the intricacies of veteran care and show how care practices come to incorporate veterans' 'self‐performances' to raise political attention and funding for future rehabilitation activities. By bringing into dialogue theories of care and theories of performance and representation, we illustrate how a seemingly classic form of care—veteran rehabilitation—takes the form of representative performance. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with the Danish Invictus Games team, we demonstrate how politics, research and TV documentaries are integrated into veteran care practices. Through this integration, mentally wounded veterans, while performing 'themselves' for shifting audiences with shifting agendas, come to assume the roles of both caregivers and care receivers. Crucially, we highlight that wounded veterans, while undertaking their personal rehabilitation journey, are curated into and (un)willingly positioned as representatives of others. By showing how caring for wounded veterans goes hand in hand with caring for fictive, future wounded veterans and for political, research and media agendas, this article offers new ways of thinking of and with care. Starting from the unsettling ambiguity of the aborted but not-quite-dead fetus, I scrutinize how clinical staff interpret, decide on, and grapple with fetal life signs following disability-selective pregnancy terminations in Austria. Understanding their practices as attempts to provide certainty in a context of ontological and moral uncertainty, I conceptualize them as acts of care that contribute to an intricate "ontological careography" and facilitate classifying the not-quite-dead as an already-dead fetus. This paper explores the interwoven lives of donkeys and the people who depend on them for their livelihoods in central Ethiopia. Drawing on data from 12 participatory workshops, insights were elicited into the ways human co-workers value and treat their donkey co-workers. Methodologically, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Appreciative Inquiry (AI) techniques were merged to explore the complex and multi-dimensional contributions donkeys make to participants' lives. Findings reveal working with donkeys can make the difference between destitution and modest survival, but societal perception of donkeys as low-status animals has an impact on their owners' lives and donkey wellbeing. This research contributes empirical insights on the valuing of donkeys and enables a deepened understanding of human-donkey relations. The combination of PRA and AI in the methodology demonstrates how to formulate a compassionate and empathetic approach for exploring donkey value and wellbeing with marginalized groups. Moving away from an individual and pathological framework and instead drawing on a social-relational model of disability, this article examines the experiences of mothers with autistic children in navigating between caregiving and working life in China. Conducting narrative analysis of 14 in-depth interviews with mothers of autistic children, we argue that their decisions to make adjustments to work are situated in social and relational dynamics of disabled and gendered cultural ideologies, inaccessibility to healthcare, education, and social services, as well as filial familial relationship. As a result, they have to adjust their careers and personal life, such as resigning from previous work and becoming full-time mothers. Although these women constantly experienced a strong sense of loss in terms of their personal and social identity, some developed new perspectives seeing disability, normality, and the meaning of 'good mother' in the process of negotiating their work life and motherhood role. Points of Interests: Mothers of autistic children in China experience social and relational barriers in caregiving and working life. Mothers adjust to their careers and personal life by quitting their previous jobs and becoming full-time mothers, changing positions, or switching to part-time employment. The unavailability of healthcare and social service, as well as the discrimination of the education system against children with autism, significantly affect their mothers' work and family life. Autistic children encounter exclusion in the filial family in China. Grandparents and fathers of autistic children often refuse to participate in childcare arrangements. As a result, mothers had to bear the care responsibility alone. Some mothers described their personal journey of 'walking out'. Background: The prevention of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) is a critical priority in the clinical management of central venous catheters (CVCs). This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate antibacterial dressings in the context of CVC care. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase et al. databases up to May 28, 2024. The search targeted randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the impact of chlorhexidine gluconate antibacterial dressings on CVC-related outcomes. The meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software. Results: The final analysis included 14 RCTs involving a total of 8920 patients with CVCs, with participants divided into a chlorhexidine antibacterial dressing group (n = 4731) and a control group (n = 4189). The chlorhexidine dressing group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of CRBSI compared to the control group, with a relative risk (RR) of 0.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.36–0.64, P < 0.001. The chlorhexidine dressing group also showed a significant decrease in bacterial colonization, with an RR of 0.46, 95% CI 0.38–0.55, P < 0.001. Assessment of publication bias through funnel plot asymmetry and Egger's test revealed no significant bias in the included studies (all P > 0.05). Conclusions: There is a notable reduction in the incidence of CRBSI and bacterial colonization in patients with CVCs through the application of chlorhexidine gluconate dressings. Given the compelling evidence, the integration of these dressings into standard nursing care protocols for the management of CVCs is advocated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the tensions and struggles over elder care that are happening in South Africa between family caregivers, care workers and the state. These struggles are experienced and expressed at the familial and community level but are best understood by examining how the state has de-funded facilities in favour of 'ageing in place' without any additional investment in community and home-based care support. The findings reveal that stresses on unpaid and paid carers are expressed in terms of individual failings and interpersonal conflict rather than through a socio-political contextual lens. Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, progressive social movements have been engaged in an incredibly intense period of contestation. Confronted with the unprecedented extent of the crisis, the current wave of mobilization brought together both older and newer actors, bridging generations and movement sectors, building on past experiences of previous mobilizations while also innovating in important ways. The Covid-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to contextualize the role of past mobilizations in contemporary struggles, singling out continuities and innovation in the forms of resistance, collective frames, and organizational models. This paper focuses on the framing of health rights and analyzes the emergence of care as a bridging frame in the movement campaigns developed during the Covid-19 crisis. In examining the processes of cross-temporal diffusion, it considers the legacy of the Global Justice Movement and its offspring in the current mobilization in Italy. Through the analysis of key documents produced by social movements triangulated with in-depth interviews with activists, we observe the ways in which some collective frames migrate from past mobilizations to new ones, and are adapted through the reactivation of old organizational networks and the emergence of new organizations. This paper contributes to the debate on the Caring city by analyzing how the local and national states managed the pandemic in Mexico City and the lived and material effects on women. Based on a series of participatory mapping workshops carried out with two groups of women: those who worked from home during the lockdown in 2020–2021 and those forced to seek work outside the home, as well as interviews with civil servants, the paper shows how the so-called 'caring' state misunderstood the material and embodied conditions of social inequalities. While the state narrative of care and protection was premised on the isolation of a 'healthy inside' from a 'contagious outside', women's experience of COVID measures would be better described as a series of thresholds assembling a body-domestic-city experience. The paper concludes that it is necessary to adjust our geographical lenses and consider the domestic space as more than unit of resolution (grain), giving it instead the necessary attention to understand its relation with urban space. Climate change education is infused with images of light. Scholars in the field tend to emphasize hope, sustainability, and solution. They foreground knowledgeable humans who construct better worlds and thereby bind themselves to modern understandings of human being and becoming. I draw on agential realism and object-oriented ontology to contest the metaphor of light, the focus on hope, and the modern premises they rely on—particularly in the context of massive sustainability crises such as climate change. The ethical dimension of agential realism and object-oriented ontology—their call for care and solidarity—offers an alternative to hope, one that aligns well with Kropotkin's concept of mutual aid. Instead of opening a pathway to sustainability, I understand education as a sphere of human being and becoming that should have its foundation on care and solidarity. As an alternative to the metaphor of light, I develop a metaphor for education in times of crisis: an education 'in shades of blue.' Blue is an existential color. Aim: Gain insight into the process of shared decision‐making (SDM) in daily hospital care for patients with dementia from nurses' perspectives. Design: Explorative qualitative design. Methods: In‐depth digital interviews were conducted with 14 registered nurses between June and November 2022. A phenomenological approach was applied using Colaizzi's seven‐step method. Results: Five themes were identified in the data: (1) SDM in daily care: How shared decision‐making is applied; (2) Nurses' perceptions and competence: How nurses perceive and manage SDM; (3) Nurses' roles and advocacy: The evolving roles of nurses and their advocacy efforts, (4) Recognition of dementia and its impact: How nurses recognize and manage dementia; and (5) Interventions to support SDM: Strategies and interventions to facilitate SDM. Conclusion: This study highlights the complexity of SDM in patients with dementia. It demonstrates the importance of the involvement of relatives, omission of patient goals in discussions and perceived deficiencies of nurses. The early identification of dementia, evaluation of nuanced capacity and targeted communication are essential. Further research and enhanced training are required to improve care in this context. Impact: Potential areas for further research on SDM in nurses involving patients with dementia include investigating the effects of integrating goal discussions into SDM training for nurses, overcoming barriers to SDM competence, and challenging the idea that SDM is solely the responsibility of physicians. These findings highlight the need for policies that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, address misconceptions and recommend training programmes that focus on applying SDM to the daily care of patients with dementia, thereby improving the overall quality of patient care. During the COVID‐19 pandemic, the United States government promoted the idea of care as infrastructure to justify government spending on nonphysical infrastructures. In this article, we demonstrate the usefulness of adopting an infrastructure framework for researching care and caring through an analysis of working mothers' communication on Reddit in the early days of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Employing infrastructural inversion as a heuristic, we conceptualize the childcare crisis experienced by working mothers in many Western societies as an infrastructural disruption in which the cascading failure of childcare infrastructures exposed the background work of care as well as its vulnerability and invisibility. We also argue that, against this backdrop, an alternate infrastructure of digital caring emerged. However, this informal infrastructure was inadequate to sustain the needs of working mothers, and its emergence, in itself, provides proof of the need to value care as infrastructure. Ultimately, we showcase how conceptualizing care as infrastructure can enrich feminist theorization of care, and that centering care as infrastructure redresses the bias toward physical infrastructure in the scholarly literature. The international literature on women and work calls on scholars to consider geographical, sociocultural, and institutional contexts governing women's employment dynamics over their life course. In Indonesia (and other lower middle‐income regions in Southeast Asia), female labor force participation is lower in urban areas than rural areas. The largest drop‐off occurs after marriage and childbearing. In this article, we argue that class and spatial context matters in examining the relationship between gender norms, gendered mobilities, and employment outcomes in mega‐urban settings. Using qualitative research, we probe beyond conventional demographic studies to explore the dynamics of married women's (decisions to stay, leave, change, or return to) employment in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia's largest urban core. Our participants were discouraged from employment participation by norms that prioritize married women's role as primary caregivers, and spatial and workplace/regulatory constraints. Our analysis underscores how the participants' employment‐related decisions consistently revolve around the concept of opportunity costs, defined as conflicts and tensions arise from mother's time away from children due to gender norms, lack of childcare and flexible formal employment options, and the long working and commuting hours in Greater Jakarta. Economic pressures for women to participate in the labor market are not matched by work–family policies, which are still rooted in entrenched ideals of women as wives and mothers. This paper explores the affective and material impacts of the reconfiguration of caring on disabled people's lives during the pandemic. We draw on a series of focus groups and interviews with a group of nine disabled people with mobility or sensory impairments, many of whom were politically active in the arena of disability rights and independent living. This work forms part of a wider project re‐imagining care practices and policies. We reveal the interplay of emotion, affect and socio‐material conditions in disabled people's pandemic lives and reflect on how pre‐existing diminished care landscapes compounded COVID‐19's impacts. With support services shuttered and people confined at home, many disabled people experienced a renewed dependence on family care or found their care needs reduced to functional tasks undertaken by rota‐filling workers. We document participants' emotional experiences of loss, fear and anger deriving from changes in their one‐to‐one care interactions and arrangements but also wider societal narratives positioning disabled people as both vulnerable to, and carriers of, disease. Drawing together the crisis' affective and material effects, we demonstrate how disabled people politicized their affective experiences of anger and hope through online organizing to challenge the diminution of supports and demand affective justice from the care system. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities in care between mobile and immobile populations. It has highlighted the precarious situation of many migranticized individuals and their families worldwide, but it has also brought their situation into the public eye, providing opportunities for advances in social science understanding and policy reform. This Special Issue explores the interplay between transnational care arrangements, cross-border movement and mobility, and the production of social inequality in the post-COVID-19 world. The collected articles provide a comprehensive picture from different countries and fields, revealing three interrelated processes that reflect the complex dynamics during the pandemic: (1) the interruption of transnational care arrangements; (2) the reorganization of these arrangements; and (3) coping strategies to adapt to (post)pandemic immobilizations, restrictions, and modified patterns of care. Building on qualitative interviews, this article brings into view how New Delhi university students organized improvised forms of Covid relief during the Delta coronavirus wave in the spring of 2021. Responding to a lack of care due to state negligence and a breakdown of public and private healthcare infrastructure, students coordinated access to crucial resources such as masks, other personal protective equipment and even oxygen through the use of social media, existing social networks, and practices developed in earlier moments of organizing. Using the lenses of improvisation, rehearsal and repair, this article documents how students improvised informal Covid relief. Conceptually, the article offers the framework of transposition to look at how improvisational capacity in a social network was shifted from one crisis to the next. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although patient safety culture is gaining attention globally, more studies are needed to investigate its relevance to the nursing care of mental health (MH) patients. Aims: This study aimed to illustrate the perceptions and experiences of nurses who work in inpatient mental health care (IMHC) concerning the patient safety practices that are employed to avert safety hazards encountered during the provision of care in IMHC settings. Methods: Eighteen postgraduate students working as MH nurses in nonprofit hospitals comprised the study sample. The participants had a minimum of 2 years' nursing experience in IMHC settings. Each participant was interviewed individually using a guided interview technique. The inductive data underwent thematic analysis. Results: Patient protection and a safety perspective were the overarching themes that emerged from the data. Three principal themes and 9 subthemes were illuminated: (a) patient care safety knowledge and background, (b) improving MH care, and (c) development of MH nursing care. Conclusions: The findings of this investigation may assist in providing guidance for the further research into and development of a patient safety culture appropriate for IMHC nursing practice, including increased structured educational experiences, judicious risk assessment, assignment of staff to include a mixture of skills and experience levels during assignments, use of standardized handoff procedures, engagement with multidisciplinary care providers, blame-free reflective information sharing and mentoring, and attention to the built environment with consideration of patient and staff safety needs. The Industrial Revolution traditionally has been seen in Disability Studies as marking a decisive shift in the lives of disabled people. It is argued that the rise of mechanisation, time discipline and standardisation made the industrial workplace a hostile environment for people with non-standard bodies. According to this view, increasing demands to work outside the home also meant that families were less capable of caring for older and disabled members, leading to greater institutionalisation. This view of increasing segregation of disabled people from home and work has dominated understanding of disability in the British Industrial Revolution, but it does not reflect the variability of disabled people's experiences at the time. Drawing on official enquiries, fictional literature, journalism and social commentary from the 1830s and 1840s – a time when the impact of industrialisation on the bodies and family relationships of workers became matters of public, political concern – this article shows the continuing importance of family in the lives of disabled people. The legal duty of families to care for sick and disabled relatives was an enduring social principle throughout this period. Interpersonal relations were tested and sometimes re-drawn by disability, forcing a change in traditional familial roles and expectations. For working people and their families, the potentials for poverty resulting from disability could be great. However, disabled people continued to play significant roles in the lives of their families, and where possible continued to contribute to the domestic economy. Taking a disability perspective on the history of the family highlights the interdependence between family members in industrialising Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article approaches first-person filmmaking as a potential home-making practice – a hometactic – that can actively negotiate reality to set forth new modes of belonging. With a focus on negotiating belonging in the context of migration, I turn to Four Journeys (Louis Hothothot, 2022) as a case study, a first-person documentary that explores the relationship between suppressed memories of violence and lived experience of in-betweenness by tracing four separate journeys between China, Hothothot's country of origin, and the Netherlands, his country of residence. My analysis of Four Journeys's home-making efforts as permeated by a praxis of care needed to enact a sustainable mode of belonging in the aftermath of migration is combined with insights from an interview between the filmmaker and the author. On the basis of the case study, the article proposes and elaborates on three forms of home-making practices in relation to cinema: hometactics in film (the documentation of home-making in the film), camera as a hometactic (the act of filmmaking as a home-making process), and cinematic hometactics (the cinematic enactments of home). While this three-part analytic differentiation serves to unpack the diverse forms of cinema and/as hometactics, the article also addresses their overlap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article draws upon in-depth interviews conducted in Czech multigenerational living with representatives of three generations. The repeated interviews took place in 2018–2019 and then in spring 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The analysis focused on caring practices and dynamics of care between three generations and how these had been impacted by pandemic in 2020. We were interested in how the pandemic affected the daily lives of multigenerationally living family members and how through their caring practices they redefine what family in the era of super-diversity is. In order to do so, we particularly focus on how vulnerability has been constructed through the caring practices as a response to Covid-19. We followed the scholarship on vulnerability which emphasises its social character and sees it as a social construct. We put forward this discussion and aim at developing the concept of ‘making vulnerability’ – processes through which people make themselves and others vulnerable through daily taken-for-granted routines and rituals – as an essential part of family care practices. This research article outlines a provocation for diverse and experimentally open, situated approaches to exploring care and caring. The diversely positioned authors discuss this idea using the subject of soil, in the place and context of Aotearoa New Zealand. Little is known about the diversity of ways that everyday people value, or, have caring relationships for/with soil, among a plethora of research that positions soil ‘care’ around, for example, commercial food production, waste‐sinking, or property land value. To study diverse care in relation to soil, as with many relational subjects, requires equivalent diversity in the ways in which we might explore it. Here we outline the basis for diverse, situated methodologies that necessarily lead to a diversity of methods. This paper looks at the methodological imperatives that lead to exploring care, and discusses a variety of methods that generate different forms of ‘data’ with different forms of representation of that care. We observe that to holistically observe care relations with soil requires a diversity of methodologies, inherently ontological and epistemological – worldmaking. We discuss situated and enactive, affective approaches of Kaupapa Māori enquiry, monitoring and arts‐based approaches to ‘measure’ soil care taking place, in place, and contextualise this with our own author positionality. We discuss this suite of experimental, reflexive, affective and responsive ways to measure soil care that are contingent on that being cared about, for, with and by, and which reciprocally give care. Background: Despite the fact that several triage tools have been implemented globally, emergency care, including the triage system, is often one of the weakest parts of the health system in developing countries, as compared to developed countries. Moreover, emergency centers in African countries are very busy, often flooded by high load of trauma patients, chronic medical conditions, acute medical emergencies, and HIV‐related conditions. These disease conditions precipitate the reasons for the prioritization of patients. In South Africa, studies conducted on the use of triage by nurses revealed that most patients are satisfied with the Nurse‐led triage service provided in emergency departments (EDs). At the same time, some Nurses also see the South African Triage Scale (SATS) as one of the easiest Nurse‐led triage tools. Aim: The study aimed at identifying the factors hindering the effective process of triage during care provision at a selected public hospital in KwaZulu‐Natal (KZN). Methods: This study utilized a cross‐sectional survey, employing a nonprobability convenience sampling to recruit its respondents. The recognition primed decision model formed the framework of the study. Ethical clearance was obtained from the University of KwaZulu‐Natal Ethics Review Board, and ethics principles were carefully observed throughout the study. Results: Out of the 100 respondents, 89% (89) of the respondents perceived that various factors still impede the progress of triage, while 11% (11) of the respondents perceived that no factor impedes the progress of triage. Conclusion: The study indicates that several factors still hinder the effective process of triage. Based on the findings of the study, factors like overcrowding, Nurses waiting for doctors when they know what to do, lack of continuous professional development on triage system, inadequate experience, lack of confidence, and lack of adequate training on triage still impede the efficient triage system. Nurses are pivotal in addressing the consequences of such calamities. Nurses operating in critical conditions encounter numerous challenges, including safety issues and ethical quandaries. The ethical considerations primarily revolve around the limitations, duties, and modified norms of care administered by nurses during disasters, presenting both significant and complex challenges.The study was designed to elucidate the nature and essence of nurses' care experiences and to offer an in‐depth depiction of the ethical dilemmas while attending to individuals injured in the earthquake.A descriptive phenomenological design was used in this research. A total of 16 nurses who worked for at least 7 days in field hospitals in any of the earthquake regions after the 2023 earthquake in Turkey participated in the research. The research was conducted between March 13 and March 20, 2023. Data were collected by face‐to‐face interview method with a semistructured form. The steps of Colaizzi's phenomenological method were used to analyze the qualitative data.The study involved a group of 16 Turkish nurses, aged between 20 and 36 years. Through data analysis, four primary themes, 14 subthemes, and 25 codes were identified. The principal themes derived from the interviews included “humanitarian duties,” “non‐adherence to ethical principles,” “respect for the injured,” and “medical errors.”In this intricate process, it becomes paramount to enhance support for nurses in the domains of management, education, and psychosocial assistance, thereby nurturing their individual and professional acumen, commitment, and ethical sensitivity. Refining the guidelines and professional standards that encapsulate the principles to be adhered to by nurses in disaster scenarios, coupled with providing comprehensive training in both medical and ethical competencies, represents a significant avenue for advancement. Focused training on crisis management will enable nurses to render ethically informed decisions and bolster their professional proficiency.Natural disasters, including earthquakes, pose significant ethical challenges for healthcare professionals, especially nurses who play a pivotal role in delivering care during these emergencies. In the context of creative writing groups, this paper explores how the affective experience of vulnerability as a basis for driving more reciprocal and interdependent caring relations involves articulating orientations towards individuality and orientations towards relationality. I examine this experience of vulnerability as an ambivalent embodied condition shaped by sociocultural norms and expectations by drawing on Goffman’s theorisation of frontstage and backstage identities. I suggest that vulnerability is experienced differently between the level of frontstage identity (as writer-listeners) and the more intimate level of backstage identity. Throughout my writing, I embody the story I tell by interweaving experiences of vulnerability in the collective context of creative writing workshops and in the co-writing experience of the academic review process. The sample consisted of 200 patients. Data were collected using a patient information form, the MISSCARE Survey‐Patient, the Nursing Image Scale (NIS), and the Trust in Nurses Scale (TNS). The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (for Windows 25.0). The study adhered to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines.Participants had a mean MISSCARE Survey‐Patient, TNS, and NIS score of 2.09 ± 0.53, 23.48 ± 5.01, and 71.52 ± 6.75, respectively. There was a moderate negative correlation between MISSCARE Survey‐Patient and TNS scores. There was a weak negative correlation between MISSCARE Survey‐Patient and NIS scores. Moreover, there was a strong positive correlation between NIS and TNS scores.MISSCARE Survey‐Patient total scores vary due to the imbalance in the number of nurses and the complexity of their tasks. Poor quality of care and incomplete care undermine the image of nursing and negatively affect the trust relationship between patients and nurses.Nursing image and trust in nurses decreases as patient–nurse communication and basic care interventions are skipped.Inadequate care can have a detrimental effect on the nursing image and erode patient–nurse trust relationships. Therefore, there is a pressing need for ongoing review and enhancement of nursing education, policy, and practice to elevate the quality of care provided. Further research utilizing objective staff measures and outcome assessments, along with gathering primary data directly from patients, is essential to substantiate the assertion that missed care significantly influences patient outcomes. This paper discusses the idea of ‘analytical leapfrogging’ by considering how and why we can sometimes be tempted to jump over or ignore a more formal analytical phase in our research. It does this by discussing a vignette presented in a conference session relating to preliminary research on everyday mobilities, care and children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The paper offers some critical reflections on the implications of refracting early project ideas through our own lived experiences and the significance of our analytical histories in shaping the work that we do. Background: It is very important to provide the correct nursing care for patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), but the level of critical care needs in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage is not clear. The purpose of this study is to establish a risk model based on the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of ICH patients, to help identify the critical care needs of ICH patients. Methods: The clinical data of ICH patients from January 2018 to September 2023 were analyzed retrospectively. The full cohort was used to derive the clinical prediction model and the model was internally validated with bootstrapping. Discrimination and calibration were assessed using the area under curve (AUC) and the Hosmer-Lemeshow tests, respectively. Results: 611 patients with ICH were included for model development. 61.21% (374/611) ICH patients had received critical care interventions. The influencing factors included in the model were Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, intraventricular hemorrhage, past blood pressure control, systolic blood pressure on admission and bleeding volume. The model's goodness-of-fit was evaluated, which yielded a high area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.943, indicating a good fit. For the purpose of model validation, a cohort of 260 patients with ICH was utilized. The model demonstrated a Youden's index of 0.750, with a sensitivity of 90.56% and a specificity of 78.22%. Conclusion: GCS, systolic blood pressure, intraventricular hemorrhage, bleeding volume and past blood pressure control are the main factors affecting the critical care needs of patients with ICH. This study has deduced a clinical predictive model with good discrimination and calibration to provide scoring criteria for clinical health care providers to accurately evaluate and identify the critical care needs of ICH patients, to improve the rational integration and allocation of medical resources.
