We analyze 99 photometrically selected Little Red Dots (LRDs) at z ~ 4-8 in the GOODS fields, leveraging ultra-deep JADES NIRCam short-wavelength (SW) data. We examine the morphology of 30 LRDs; the remaining 69 are predominantly compact, i.e. are strongly dominated by sources < 400 pc in diameter and lack extended components even in stacked SW band images. Among the LRDs selected for morphological analysis, 50% show at least two distinct, associated sources or galaxy components, while the others appear as single sources with highly asymmetric structures. We find median stellar masses of log10(M*/Msun) = 9.07(-0.08)(+0.11) for pure stellar models with Av ~ 1.16(+0.11)(-0.21) mag, and log10(M*/Msun) = 9.67(+0.17)(-0.27) for models including AGNs, where Av ~ 2.74(+0.55)(-0.71) mag, consistent with recent results showing LRDs tend to have high stellar masses and dust content when fitted with AGN models. NIRSpec spectra are available for 15 sources, 6 of which fall within the morphological analysis sample and show multiple components. Among these 15, broad H-alpha emission is detected in 40%, with full-width half-maximum (FWHM) ranging from 1200 to 2900 km/s. One source exhibits broad H-beta emission with FWHM = 2000 +/- 500 km/s. Analysis of line ratios probing the interstellar medium (ISM) reveals a composite nature, indicating AGN activity combined with stellar processes. We analyze a sample of 4500 photometrically-selected Ha emitter galaxies at redshifts z~2 and z~4-6 selected from James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) medium-band images in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S). The bulk (80%) of the galaxies in our sample have stellar masses lower than 10^8 Msun, with a median stellar mass of ~10^7.3 Msun. We derive Ha rest-frame equivalent widths ( EW0(Ha) ), line fluxes, and star formation rates using a robust photometric excess technique tested against spectroscopic measurements, being sensitive to EW0(Ha) > 75 A. Both EW0(Ha) and sSFR(Ha) anti-correlate with stellar mass, and at fixed stellar mass, show a steep increasing trend with redshift sSFR(Ha) ~ (1+z)^2.55. By comparing the Ha and rest-frame UV-derived SFRs, we probe the star formation histories (SFHs) of our galaxies in the past 100 Myr. The fraction of low-mass galaxies (M < 10^8 Msun) with signs of bursty star formation from their SFR(Ha)/SFR(UV) is ~ 50 %. It quickly drops to ~ 25 % for M > 10^8 Msun. This is consistent with the results from sSFR(Ha), showing 80% and 17%, respectively. SFR(Ha)/SFR(UV) is a stricter criterion than those based on the galaxy sSFR(Ha), as it only identifies the strongest starbursts, the ones at the initial phases of a bursty star-formation episode., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. Thanks to decades of observations using HST, the structure of galaxies at redshift $z>2$ has been widely studied in the rest-frame ultraviolet regime, which traces recent star formation from young stellar populations. But, we still have little information about the spatial distribution of the older, more evolved, stellar populations, constrained by the rest-frame infrared portion of galaxies' spectral energy distribution. We present the morphological characterization of a sample of 21 massive galaxies ($\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>9.5$) at redshift $33$ massive galaxies show a smooth distribution of their rest-infrared light, strongly supporting the increasing number of regular disk galaxies already in place at early epochs. On the contrary, the ultraviolet structure obtained from HST observations is generally more irregular, catching the most recent episodes of star formation. Importantly, we find a segregation of morphologies across cosmic time, having massive galaxies at redshift $z>4$ later-type morphologies compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies. These findings suggest a transition phase in galaxy assembly and central mass build up already taking place at $z\sim3-4$. We investigate the correlation between stellar mass (M*) and star formation rate (SFR) across the stellar mass range log10(M*/Msun)~6-11. We consider almost 50,000 star-forming galaxies at z~3-7, leveraging data from COSMOS/SMUVS, JADES/GOODS-SOUTH, and MIDIS/XDF. This is the first study spanning such a wide stellar mass range without relying on gravitational lensing effects. We locate our galaxies on the SFR-M* plane to assess how the location of galaxies in the star-formation main sequence (MS) and starburst (SB) region evolves with stellar mass and redshift. We find that the two star-forming modes tend to converge at log10(M*/Msun) < 7, with all galaxies found in the SB mode. However, deeper observations will be instrumental for reaching lower SFRs and Msun to further validate this scenario. By dissecting our galaxy sample in stellar mass and redshift, we show that the emergence of the star-formation MS is stellar-mass dependent: while in galaxies with log10(M*/Msun) > 9 the MS is already well in place at z = 5-7, for galaxies with log10(M*/Msun)~7-8 it only becomes significant at z<4. Overall, our results are in line with previous findings that the SB mode dominates amongst low stellar-mass galaxies. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Despite the importance of the dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z$>2 for understanding the galaxy evolution in the early Universe, their stellar distributions traced by the near-IR emission were spatially unresolved until the arrival of the JWST. In this work we present, for the first time, a spatially-resolved morphological analysis of the rest-frame near-IR (~1.1-3.5$\mu$m) emission in DSFGs traced with the JWST/MIRI. In particular, we study the mature stellar component for the three DSFGs and a Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) present in an overdensity at $z$=4.05. Moreover, we use MIRI images along with UV to (sub)-mm ancillary photometric data to model their SEDs and extract their main physical properties. The sub-arcsec resolution MIRI images have revealed that the stellar component present a wide range of morphologies, from disc-like to compact and clump-dominated structures. These near-IR structures contrast with their UV emission, which is usually diffuse and off-centered. The SED fitting analysis shows that GN20 dominates the total SFR with a value ~2500 $M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ while GN20.2b has the highest stellar mass in the sample ($M_*$~2$\times$10$^{11}$ $M_\odot$). The two DSFGs classified as LTGs (GN20 and GN20.2a) show high specific SFR (sSFR>30 Gyr$^{-1}$) placing them above the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) at z~4 by >0.5 dex while the ETG (i.e.,GN20.2b) is compatible with the high-mass end of the main sequence. When comparing with other DSFGs in overdensities at $z$~2-7 we observe that our objects present similar SFRs, depletion times and projected separations. Nevertheless, the effective radii computed for GN20 and GN20.2a are up to two times larger than those of isolated galaxies observed in CEERS and ALMA-HUDF at similar redshifts. Early galaxy formation, initiated by the dark matter and gas assembly, evolves through frequent mergers and feedback processes into dynamically hot, chaotic structures. In contrast, dynamically cold, smooth rotating disks have been observed in massive evolved galaxies merely 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang, suggesting rapid morphological and dynamical evolution in the early Universe. Probing this evolution mechanism necessitates studies of young galaxies, yet efforts have been hindered by observational limitations in both sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here we report high-resolution observations of a strongly lensed and quintuply imaged, low-luminosity, young galaxy at $z=6.072$ (dubbed the Cosmic Grapes), 930 million years after the Big Bang. Magnified by gravitational lensing, the galaxy is resolved into at least 15 individual star-forming clumps with effective radii of $r_{\rm e}\simeq$ 10--60 parsec (pc), which dominate $\simeq$ 70\% of the galaxy's total flux. The cool gas emission unveils a smooth, underlying rotating disk characterized by a high rotational-to-random motion ratio and a gravitationally unstable state (Toomre $Q \simeq$ 0.2--0.3), with high surface gas densities comparable to local dusty starbursts with $\simeq10^{3-5}$ $M_{\odot}$/pc$^{2}$. These gas properties suggest that the numerous star-forming clumps are formed through disk instabilities with weak feedback effects. The clumpiness of the Cosmic Grapes significantly exceeds that of galaxies at later epochs and the predictions from current simulations for early galaxies. Dusty, distant, massive ($M_*\gtrsim 10^{11}\,\rm M_\odot$) galaxies are usually found to show a remarkable star-formation activity, contributing on the order of $25\%$ of the cosmic star-formation rate density at $z\approx3$--$5$, and up to $30\%$ at $z\sim7$ from ALMA observations. Nonetheless, they are elusive in classical optical surveys, and current near-infrared surveys are able to detect them only in very small sky areas. Since these objects have low space densities, deep and wide surveys are necessary to obtain statistically relevant results about them. Euclid will be potentially capable of delivering the required information, but, given the lack of spectroscopic features at these distances within its bands, it is still unclear if it will be possible to identify and characterize these objects. The goal of this work is to assess the capability of Euclid, together with ancillary optical and near-infrared data, to identify these distant, dusty and massive galaxies, based on broadband photometry. We used a gradient-boosting algorithm to predict both the redshift and spectral type of objects at high $z$. To perform such an analysis we make use of simulated photometric observations derived using the SPRITZ software. The gradient-boosting algorithm was found to be accurate in predicting both the redshift and spectral type of objects within the Euclid Deep Survey simulated catalog at $z>2$. In particular, we study the analog of HIEROs (i.e. sources with $H-[4.5]>2.25$), combining Euclid and Spitzer data at the depth of the Deep Fields. We found that the dusty population at $3\lesssim z\lesssim 7$ is well identified, with a redshift RMS and OLF of only $0.55$ and $8.5\%$ ($H_E\leq26$), respectively. Dusty star-forming galaxies emit most of their light at far-IR to mm wavelengths as their star formation is highly obscured. Far-IR and mm observations have revealed their dust, neutral and molecular gas properties. The sensitivity of JWST at rest-frame optical and near-infrared wavelengths now allows the study of the stellar and ionized gas content. We investigate the spatially resolved distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas in GN20, a dusty star forming galaxy at $z$=4.0548. We present deep MIRI/MRS integral field spectroscopy of the near-infrared rest-frame emission of GN20. We detect spatially resolved \paa, out to a radius of 6 kpc, distributed in a clumpy morphology. The star formation rate derived from \paa\ (144 $\pm$ 9 \msunperyear) is only 7.7 $\pm 0.5 $\% of the infrared star formation rate (1860 $\pm$ 90 \msunperyear). We attribute this to very high extinction (A$_V$ = 17.2 $\pm$ 0.4 mag, or A$_{V,mixed}$ = 44 $\pm$ 3 mag), especially in the nucleus of GN20, where only faint \paa\ is detected, suggesting a deeply buried starburst. We identify four, spatially unresolved, clumps in the \paa\ emission. Based on the double peaked \paa\ profile we find that each clump consist of at least two sub-clumps. We find mass upper limits consistent with them being formed in a gravitationally unstable gaseous disk. The UV bright region of GN20 does not have any detected \paa\ emission, suggesting an age of more than 10 Myrs for this region of the galaxy. From the rotation profile of \paa\ we conclude that the gas kinematics are rotationally dominated and the $v_{rot}/\sigma_{m} = 3.8 \pm 1.4$ is similar to low-redshift LIRGs. By using the ultra-deep \textit{JWST}/MIRI image at 5.6 $\mu m$ in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, we constrain the role of strong H$\alpha$-emitters (HAEs) during Cosmic Reionization at $z\simeq7-8$. Our sample of HAEs is comprised of young ($<35\;\rm Myr$) galaxies, except for one single galaxy ($\approx 300\;\rm Myr$), with low stellar masses ($\lesssim 10^{9}\;\rm M_{\odot}$). These HAEs show a wide range of UV-$\beta$ slopes, with a median value of $\beta = -2.15\pm0.21$ which broadly correlates with stellar mass. We estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency ($\xi_{ion,0}$) of these sources (assuming $f_{esc,LyC} = 0\%$), which yields a median value $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion,0}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.50^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$. We show that $\xi_{ion,0}$ positively correlates with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Instead $\xi_{ion,0}$ weakly anti-correlates with stellar mass and $\beta$. Based on the $\beta$ values, we predict $f_{esc, LyC}=4\%^{+3}_{-2}$, which results in $\rm log_{10}(\xi_{ion}/(Hz\;erg^{-1})) = 25.55^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. Considering this and related findings from the literature, we find a mild evolution of $\xi_{ion}$with redshift. Additionally, our results suggest that these HAEs require only modest escape fractions ($f_{esc, rel}$) of 6$-$15\% to reionize their surrounding intergalactic medium. By only considering the contribution of these HAEs, we estimated their total ionizing emissivity ($\dot{N}_{ion}$) as $\dot{N}_{ion} = 10^{50.53 \pm 0.45}; \text{s}^{-1}\text{Mpc}^{-3}$. When comparing their $\dot{N}_{ion}$ with "non-H$\alpha$ emitter" galaxies across the same redshift range, we find that that strong, young, and low-mass emitters may have played an important role during Cosmic Reionization., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures, 1 table. We present MIRI/JWST medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging (MIRIM) of the lensed galaxy MACS1149-JD1 at a redshift of $z$=9.1092$\pm$0.0002 (Universe age about 530 Myr). We detect, for the first time, spatially resolved H$\alpha$ emission in a galaxy at a redshift above nine. The structure of the H$\alpha$ emitting gas consists of two clumps, S and N. The total H$\alpha$ luminosity implies an instantaneous star-formation of 5.3$\pm$0.4 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for solar metallicities. The ionizing photon production efficiency, $\log(\zeta_\mathrm{ion})$, shows a spatially resolved structure with values of 25.55$\pm$0.03, 25.47$\pm$0.03, and 25.91$\pm$0.09 Hz erg$^{-1}$ for the integrated galaxy, and clumps S and N, respectively. The H$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width, EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$), is 726$^{+660}_{-182}$ \'Angstrom for the integrated galaxy, but presents extreme values of 531$^{+300}_{-96}$ \'Angstrom and $\geq$1951 \'Angstrom for clumps S and N, respectively. The spatially resolved ionizing photon production efficiency is within the range of values measured in galaxies at redshift above six, and well above the canonical value (25.2$\pm$0.1 Hz erg$^{-1}$). The extreme difference of EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) for Clumps S and N indicates the presence of a recent (<5 Myrs) burst in clump N and a star formation over a larger period of time (e.g., $\sim$50 Myr) in clump S. Finally, clump S and N show very different H$\alpha$ kinematics with velocity dispersions of 56$\pm$4 km s$^{-1}$ and 113$\pm$33 km s$^{-1}$, likely indicating the presence of outflows or increased turbulence in the clump N. The ALMA lensing cluster survey (ALCS) is a 96-hr large program dedicated to uncovering and characterizing intrinsically faint continuum sources and line emitters with the assistance of gravitational lensing. All 33 cluster fields were selected from HST/Spitzer treasury programs including CLASH, Hubble Frontier Fields, and RELICS, which also have Herschel and Chandra coverages. The total sky area surveyed reaches $\sim$133 arcmin$^2$ down to a depth of $\sim$60 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1$\sigma$) at 1.2 mm, yielding 141 secure blind detections of continuum sources and additional 39 sources aided by priors. We present scientific motivation, survey design, the status of spectroscopy follow-up observations, and number counts down to $\sim$7 $\mu$Jy. We present JWST/NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of a lensed Population III candidate stellar complex (dubbed Lensed And Pristine 1, LAP1), with a lensing-corrected stellar mass ~<10^4 Msun, absolute luminosity M_UV > -11.2 (m_UV > 35.6), confirmed at redshift 6.639 +/- 0.004. The system is strongly amplified (\mu >~ 100) by straddling a critical line of the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416. Despite the stellar continuum is currently not detected in the Hubble and JWST/NIRCam and NIRISS imaging, arclet-like shapes of Lyman and Balmer lines, Lya, Hg, Hb and Ha are detected with NIRSpec IFS with signal-to-noise ratios SNR=5-13 and large equivalent widths (>300-2000A), along with a remarkably weak [OIII]4959-5007 at SNR ~ 4. LAP1 shows a large ionizing photon production efficiency, log(\xi_{ion}[erg~Hz^{-1}])>26. From the metallicity indexes R23 = ([OIII]4959-5007 + [OII]3727) / Hb ~< 0.74 and R3 = ([OIII]5007 / Hb) = 0.55 +/- 0.14, we derive an oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) ~< 6.3. Intriguingly, the Ha emission is also measured in mirrored sub-components where no [OIII] is detected, providing even more stringent upper limits on the metallicity if in-situ star formation is ongoing in this region (12+log(O/H) < 6, or Z < 0.002 Zsun). The formal stellar mass limit of the sub-components would correspond to ~10^{3} Msun or M_UV fainter than -10. Alternatively, such a metal-free pure line emitting region could be the first case of a fluorescing HI gas region, induced by transverse escaping ionizing radiation from a nearby star-complex. The presence of large equivalent-width hydrogen lines and the deficiency of metal lines in such a small region, make LAP1 the most metal poor star-forming region currently known in the reionization era and a promising site that may host isolated, pristine stars., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Luminous infrared galaxies at high redshifts ($z$>4) include extreme starbursts that build their stellar mass over short periods of time (>100 Myr). These galaxies are considered to be the progenitors of massive quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts ($z\sim$2) but their stellar structure and buildup is unknown. Here, we present the first spatially resolved near-infrared imaging of GN20, one of the most luminous dusty star-forming galaxies known to date, observed at an epoch when the Universe was only 1.5 Gyr old. The 5.6$\mu$m image taken with the JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI/JWST) shows that GN20 is a very luminous galaxy (M$_\mathrm{1.1\mu m,AB}$=$-$25.01), with a stellar structure composed of a conspicuous central source and an extended envelope. The central source is an unresolved nucleus that carries 9% of the total flux. The nucleus is co-aligned with the peak of the cold dust emission, and offset by 3.9 kpc from the ultraviolet stellar emission. The diffuse stellar envelope is similar in size to the clumpy CO molecular gas distribution. The centroid of the stellar envelope is offset by 1 kpc from the unresolved nucleus, suggesting GN20 is involved in an interaction or merger event supported by its location as the brightest galaxy in a proto-cluster. The stellar size of GN20 is larger by a factor of about 3-5 than known spheroids, disks, and irregulars at $z\sim$4, while its size and low S\'ersic index are similar to those measured in dusty, infrared luminous galaxies at $z\sim$2 of the same mass. GN20 has all the ingredients necessary for evolving into a massive spheroidal quiescent galaxy at intermediate $z$: it is a large, luminous galaxy at $z$=4.05 involved in a short and massive starburst centred in the stellar nucleus and extended over the entire galaxy, out to radii of 4 kpc, and likely induced by the interaction or merger with a member of the proto-cluster., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Mid-infrared observations are powerful in identifying heavily obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) which have weak emission in other wavelengths. Data from the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) onboard JWST provides an excellent opportunity to perform such studies. We take advantage of the MIRI imaging data from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) to investigate the AGN population in the distant universe. We estimate the source properties of MIRI-selected objects by utilizing spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling, and classify them into star-forming galaxies (SF), SF-AGN mixed objects, and AGN. The source numbers of these types are 418, 111, and 31, respectively, from 4 MIRI pointings covering $\sim 9$ arcmin$^2$. The sample spans a redshift range of $\approx 0$--5. We derive the median SEDs for all three source types, respectively, and publicly release them. The median MIRI SED of AGN is similar to the typical SEDs of hot dust-obscured galaxies and Seyfert 2s, for which the mid-IR SEDs are dominantly from AGN-heated hot dust. Based on our SED-fit results, we estimate the black-hole accretion density (BHAD; i.e., total BH growth rate per comoving volume) as a function of redshift. At $z<3$, the resulting BHAD agrees with the X-ray measurements in general. At $z>3$, we identify a total of 27 AGN and SF-AGN mixed objects, leading to that our high-$z$ BHAD is substantially higher than the X-ray results ($\sim 0.5$ dex at $z \approx 3$--5). We make use of \textit{JWST} medium and broad-band NIRCam imaging, along with ultra-deep MIRI $5.6 \rm \mu m$ imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (XDF) to identify prominent line emitters at $z\simeq 7-8$. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at $z\simeq 7-8$, we find 18 robust candidates ($\simeq$31\%) for (H$\beta$ + [OIII]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW$_{0}$(H$\beta$ +[OIII]) $\simeq 87 - 2100$ {\AA}. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at $5.6 \, \rm \mu m$, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H$\alpha$ emission line with EW$_{0}$(H$\alpha$) $\simeq 200-3000$ {\AA}. This is the first time that H$\alpha$ emission can be detected in individual galaxies at $z>7$. The H$\alpha$ line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H$\beta$ and [OIII] to the (H$\beta$ +[OIII]) complex, and derive H$\alpha$-based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [OIII]/H$\beta > 1$. Instead, two galaxies have [OIII]/H$\beta < 1$, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H$\beta$. This could potentially imply extremely low metallicities. Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density $\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{H\alpha}}) \simeq -2.35$, which is about a quarter of the total value ($\rm log_{10}(\rho_{SFR_{tot}}) \simeq -1.76$) at $z\simeq 7-8$. Using MIRI on-board JWST we present mid-infrared sub-arcsec imaging (MIRIM) and spectroscopy (MRS) of the hyperluminous infrared system SPT0311-58 at z=6.9. MIRI observations are compared with existing ALMA far-infrared continuum and [CII]158$\mu$m imaging. Even though the ALMA observations suggests very high star formation rates (SFR) in the eastern (E) and western (W) galaxies of the system, the H$\alpha$ line is not detected. This, together with the detection of the Pa$\alpha$ line, implies very high optical nebular extinction with lower limits of 4.2 (E) and 3.9 mag (W), and even larger 5.6 (E) and 10.0 (W) for SED derived values. The extinction-corrected Pa$\alpha$ SFRs are 383 and 230M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. This represents 50% of the SFRs derived from the [CII]158$\mu$m line and infrared light for the E galaxy and as low as 6% for the W galaxy. The MIRI observations reveal a clumpy stellar structure, with each clump having 3 to 5 $\times$10$^{9}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$, leading to a total stellar mass of 2.0 and 1.5$\times$10$^{10}$M$_\mathrm{\odot}$ for the E and W galaxies, respectively. The specific SFR in the stellar clumps ranges from 25 to 59Gyr$^{-1}$, which are 3 to 10 times larger than the values measured in galaxies of similar mass at redshifts 6 to 8. The overall gas mass fraction is $M_\mathrm{gas}$/$M_*\sim3$, similar to that of z=4.5-6 star-forming galaxies. The observed properties of SPT0311-58 such as the clumpy distribution at sub(kpc) scales and the very high average extinction are similar to those observed in low- and intermediate-z LIRGs and ULIRGs, even though SPT0311-58 is observed only 800 Myr after the Big Bang. The origin of the Lyman-${\alpha}$ (Ly${\alpha}$) emission in galaxies is a long-standing issue: despite several processes known to originate this line (e.g. AGN, star formation, cold accretion, shock heating), it is difficult to discriminate among these phenomena based on observations. Recent studies have suggested that the comparison of the ultraviolet (UV) and optical properties of these sources could solve the riddle. For this reason, we investigate the rest-frame UV and optical properties of A2895b, a strongly lensed Ly${\alpha}$-emitter at redshift z ~ 3.7. From this study, we find that our target is a compact (r ~ 1.2 pkpc) star-forming (star formation rate ~ 11 M$_{\odot}$/yr) galaxy having a young stellar population. Interestingly, we measure a high ratio of the H${\beta}$ and the UV continuum monochromatic luminosities (L(H${\beta}$)/L(UV) ~ 100). Based on tracks of theoretical stellar models (Starburst99, BPASS), we can only partially explain this result by assuming a recent (< 10 Myr), bursty episode of star-formation and considering models characterised by binary stars, a top-heavy initial-mass function (IMF) and sub-solar metallicities (Z < 0.01 Z$_{\odot}$). These assumptions also explain the observed low (C/O) abundance of our target (~ 0.23(C/O)$_{\odot}$). By comparing the UV and optical datasets, we find that the Ly${\alpha}$ and UV continuum are more extended (x2) than the Balmer lines, and that the peak of the Ly${\alpha}$ is offset (~ 0.6 pkpc). The multi-wavelength results of our analysis suggest that the observed Ly${\alpha}$ emission originates from a recent star-formation burst, likely taking place in an off-centre clump., Comment: 18 pages (including Appendix), 5 figures. The Euclid Space Telescope will provide deep imaging at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, along with slitless near-infrared spectroscopy, across ~15,000 sq deg of the sky. Euclid is expected to detect ~12 billion astronomical sources, facilitating new insights into cosmology, galaxy evolution, and various other topics. To optimally exploit the expected very large data set, there is the need to develop appropriate methods and software. Here we present a novel machine-learning based methodology for selection of quiescent galaxies using broad-band Euclid I_E, Y_E, J_E, H_E photometry, in combination with multiwavelength photometry from other surveys. The ARIADNE pipeline uses meta-learning to fuse decision-tree ensembles, nearest-neighbours, and deep-learning methods into a single classifier that yields significantly higher accuracy than any of the individual learning methods separately. The pipeline has `sparsity-awareness', so that missing photometry values are still informative for the classification. Our pipeline derives photometric redshifts for galaxies selected as quiescent, aided by the `pseudo-labelling' semi-supervised method. After application of the outlier filter, our pipeline achieves a normalized mean absolute deviation of ~< 0.03 and a fraction of catastrophic outliers of ~< 0.02 when measured against the COSMOS2015 photometric redshifts. We apply our classification pipeline to mock galaxy photometry catalogues corresponding to three main scenarios: (i) Euclid Deep Survey with ancillary ugriz, WISE, and radio data; (ii) Euclid Wide Survey with ancillary ugriz, WISE, and radio data; (iii) Euclid Wide Survey only. Our classification pipeline outperforms UVJ selection, in addition to the Euclid I_E-Y_E, J_E-H_E and u-I_E,I_E-J_E colour-colour methods, with improvements in completeness and the F1-score of up to a factor of 2. We present a detailed strong lensing analysis of the massive and distant ($z=0.870$) galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102$-$4915 (ACT0102, also known as El Gordo), taking advantage of new spectroscopic data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope, and archival imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. Thanks to the MUSE data, we measure secure redshifts for 374 single objects, including 23 multiply lensed galaxies, and 167 cluster members of ACT0102. The observed positions of 56 multiple images, along with their new spectroscopic redshift measurements, are used as constraints for our strong lensing model. Remarkably, some multiple images are detected out to a large projected distance of $\approx 1$ Mpc from the brightest cluster galaxy, allowing us to estimate a projected total mass value of $1.84_{-0.04}^{+0.03} \times 10^{15}\, \rm M_{\odot}$ within that radius. We find that we need two extended cluster mass components, the mass contributions from the cluster members and the additional lensing effect of a foreground ($z=0.633$) group of galaxies, to predict the positions of all multiple images with a root mean square offset of $0.75"$. The main cluster-scale mass component is centered very closely to the brightest cluster galaxy and the other extended mass component is located in the north-west region of the cluster. These two mass components have very similar values of mass projected within 300 kpc from their centers, namely $2.29_{-0.10}^{+0.09}\times10^{14}\,\rm M_{\odot}$ and $2.10_{-0.09}^{+0.08}\times10^{14}\,\rm M_{\odot}$, in agreement with the major merging scenario of ACT0102. (Abridged) The Euclid mission is expected to discover thousands of z>6 galaxies in three Deep Fields, which together will cover a ~40 deg2 area. However, the limited number of Euclid bands and availability of ancillary data could make the identification of z>6 galaxies challenging. In this work, we assess the degree of contamination by intermediate-redshift galaxies (z=1-5.8) expected for z>6 galaxies within the Euclid Deep Survey. This study is based on ~176,000 real galaxies at z=1-8 in a ~0.7 deg2 area selected from the UltraVISTA ultra-deep survey, and ~96,000 mock galaxies with 25.3$\leq$H<27.0, which altogether cover the range of magnitudes to be probed in the Euclid Deep Survey. We simulate Euclid and ancillary photometry from the fiducial, 28-band photometry, and fit spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to various combinations of these simulated data. Our study demonstrates that identifying z>6 with Euclid data alone will be very effective, with a z>6 recovery of 91(88)% for bright (faint) galaxies. For the UltraVISTA-like bright sample, the percentage of z=1-5.8 contaminants amongst apparent z>6 galaxies as observed with Euclid alone is 18%, which is reduced to 4(13)% by including ultra-deep Rubin (Spitzer) photometry. Conversely, for the faint mock sample, the contamination fraction with Euclid alone is considerably higher at 39%, and minimized to 7% when including ultra-deep Rubin data. For UltraVISTA-like bright galaxies, we find that Euclid (I-Y)>2.8 and (Y-J)<1.4 colour criteria can separate contaminants from true z>6 galaxies, although these are applicable to only 54% of the contaminants, as many have unconstrained (I-Y) colours. In the most optimistic scenario, these cuts reduce the contamination fraction to 1% whilst preserving 81% of the fiducial z>6 sample. We present the first results from the 2mm Mapping Obscuration to Reionization (MORA) survey, the largest ALMA contiguous blank-field survey to-date with a total area of 184 sq. arcmin and the only at 2mm to search for dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). We use the 13 sources detected above 5sigma to estimate the first ALMA galaxy number counts at this wavelength. These number counts are then combined with the state-of-the-art galaxy number counts at 1.2mm and 3mm and with a backward evolution model to place constraints on the evolution of the IR luminosity function and dust-obscured star formation in the last 13 billion years. Our results suggest a steep redshift evolution on the space density of DSFGs and confirm the flattening of the IR luminosity function at faint luminosities, with a slope of $\alpha_{LF} = -0.42^{+0.02}_{-0.04}$. We conclude that the dust-obscured component, which peaks at z=2-2.5, has dominated the cosmic history of star formation for the past ~12 billion years, back to z~4. At z=5, the dust-obscured star formation is estimated to be ~35% of the total star formation rate density and decreases to 25%-20% at z=6-7, implying a minor contribution of dust-enshrouded star formation in the first billion years of the Universe. With the dust-obscured star formation history constrained up to the end of the epoch of reionization, our results provide a benchmark to test galaxy formation models, to study the galaxy mass assembly history, and to understand the dust and metal enrichment of the Universe at early times., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery of an intrinsically faint, quintuply-imaged, dusty galaxy MACS0600-z6 at a redshift $z=$6.07 viewed through the cluster MACSJ0600.1-2008 ($z$=0.46). A $\simeq4\sigma$ dust detection is seen at 1.2mm as part of the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS), an on-going ALMA Large program, and the redshift is secured via [C II] 158 $\mu$m emission described in a companion paper. In addition, spectroscopic follow-up with GMOS/Gemini-North shows a break in the galaxy's spectrum, consistent with the Lyman break at that redshift. We use a detailed mass model of the cluster and infer a magnification $\mu\gtrsim$30 for the most magnified image of this galaxy, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe the physical properties of a sub-luminous galaxy at the end of cosmic reionisation. Based on the spectral energy distribution, we infer lensing-corrected stellar and dust masses of $\rm{2.9^{+11.5}_{-2.3}\times10^9}$ and $\rm{4.8^{+4.5}_{-3.4}\times10^6}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ respectively, a star formation rate of $\rm{9.7^{+22.0}_{-6.6} M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, an intrinsic size of $\rm{0.54^{+0.26}_{-0.14}}$ kpc, and a luminosity-weighted age of 200$\pm$100 Myr. Strikingly, the dust production rate in this relatively young galaxy appears to be larger than that observed for equivalent, lower redshift sources. Context: A census of faint and tiny star forming complexes at high redshift is key to improving our understanding of reionizing sources, galaxy growth and the formation of globular clusters. Aims: We present the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF) program. Methods: We describe Deep MUSE observations of 17.1 hours integration on a single pointing over the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416. Results: We confirm spectroscopic redshifts for all 136 multiple images of 48 source galaxies at 0.910 for individual objects down to de-lensed magnitude 28-30 suggesting that they are common in such faint sources. Conclusions:Deep MUSE observations, in combination with existing HST imaging, allowed us to:(1) confirm redshifts for extremely faint high-z sources;(2) peer into their internal clumps (down to 100-200 pc scale);(3) in some cases break down such clumps into bound star clusters (<20 pc scale);(4) double the number of constraints for the lens model,reaching an unprecedented set of 182 bona-fide multiple images and confirming up to 213 galaxy cluster members. We report the discovery of a Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) galaxy group at z=4.32 lensed by the massive galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 (aka El Gordo) at z=0.87, associated with a 1.2 mm source which is at a 2.07+/-0.88 kpc projected distance from one of the group galaxies. Three images of the whole system appear in the image plane. The 1.2 mm source has been detected within the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). As this ALMA source is undetected at wavelengths lambda < 2 microns, its redshift cannot be independently determined, however, the three lensing components indicate that it belongs to the same galaxy group at z=4.32. The four members of the MUSE galaxy group have low to intermediate stellar masses (~ 10^7-10^{10} Msun) and star formation rates (SFRs) of 0.4-24 Msun/yr, resulting in high specific SFRs (sSFRs) for two of them, which suggest that these galaxies are growing fast (with stellar-mass doubling times of only ~ 2x10^7 years). This high incidence of starburst galaxies is likely a consequence of interactions within the galaxy group, which is compact and has high velocity dispersion. Based on the magnification-corrected sub-/millimetre continuum flux density and estimated stellar mass, we infer that the ALMA source is classified as an ordinary ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (with associated dust-obscured SFR~200-300 Msun/yr) and lies on the star-formation main sequence. This reported case of an ALMA/MUSE group association suggests that some presumably isolated ALMA sources are in fact signposts of richer star-forming environments at high redshifts., Comment: 13 pages including 7 figures and 1 table. We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift $56$ and redshifts $05$ galaxy samples can be reduced to $<0.01$ arcmin$^{-2}$ with a limited impact on galaxy completeness. We investigate multiple high-redshift galaxy selection techniques and find the best compromise between completeness and purity at $5

We discovered a strongly lensed (\mu >40) Lya emission at z=6.629 (S/N~18) in the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF) targeting the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416. Dedicated lensing simulations imply that the Lya emitting region necessarily crosses the caustic. The arc-like shape of the Lya extends 3 arcsec on the observed plane and is the result of two merged multiple images, each one with a de-lensed Lya luminosity L<~2.8 x 10^(40) erg/s arising from a confined region (< 150 pc effective radius). A spatially unresolved HST counterpart is barely detected at S/N~2 after stacking the near-infrared bands, corresponding to an observed(intrinsic) magnitude m_(1500)>~30.8(>~35.0). The inferred rest-frame Lya equivalent width is EWo > 1120 A if the IGM transmission is T(IGM)<0.5. The low luminosities and the extremely large Lya EWo match the case of a Population~III star complex made of several dozens stars (~ 10^4 Msun) which irradiate a HII region crossing the caustic. While the Lya and stellar continuum are among the faintest ever observed at this redshift, the continuum and the Lya emissions could be affected by differential magnification, possibly biasing the EWo estimate. The aforementioned tentative HST detection tend to favor a large EWo, making such a faint Pop~III candidate a key target for the James Webb Space Telescope and Extremely Large Telescopes., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and 1 table. We search for bright Ly$\rm \alpha$ emitters among Spitzer SMUVS galaxies at z > 2.9 with homogeneous MUSE data. Although it only covers a small region of COSMOS, MUSE has the unique advantage of providing spectral information over the entire field, without the need of target pre-selection. This gives an unbiased detection of all the brightest Ly$\rm \alpha$ emitters among SMUVS sources, which by design are stellar-mass selected galaxies. Within the studied area, ~14% of the SMUVS galaxies at z > 2.9 have Ly$\rm \alpha$ fluxes F$\rm _\lambda$ > 7 x 10$^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. These Ly$\rm \alpha$ emitters are characterized by three types of emission, 47% show a single line profile, 19% present a double peak or a blue bump and 31% show a red tail. One object (3%) shows both a blue bump and a red tail. We also investigate the spectral energy distribution (SED) properties of the SMUVS MUSE-detected galaxies and MUSE non-detections. After stellar-mass matching both populations, we find that MUSE detected galaxies have generally lower extinction than SMUVS-only objects, while there is no clear intrinsic difference in the mass and age distributions. For the MUSE-detected SMUVS galaxies, we compare the instantaneous SFR lower limit given by Ly$\rm \alpha$ flux with its past average derived from SED fitting, and find evidence for rejuvenation in some of our oldest objects. We also study the spectra of those Ly$\rm \alpha$ emitters which are not detected in SMUVS in the same field. We find different distributions of the emission line profiles, which could be ascribed to the fainter Ly$\rm \alpha$ luminosities of the MUSE-only sources and an intrinsically different mass distribution. Finally, we search for the presence of galaxy associations. The James Webb Space Telescope will provide deep imaging and spectroscopy for sources at redshifts above 6, covering the Epoch of Reionization (EoR, 6 < z < 10). The Mid-IR instrument (MIRI) integral field spectrograph (MRS) will be the only instrument on board JWST able to observe the brightest optical emission lines H$\alpha$ and [OIII]0.5007$\mu$m at redshifts above 7 and 9, respectively. This paper presents a study of the H$\alpha$ fluxes predicted by FIRSTLIGHT cosmological simulations for galaxies at redshifts of 6.5 to 10.5, and its detectability with MIRI. Deep (40 ks) spectroscopic integrations with MRS will be able to detect (S/N > 5) EoR sources at redshifts above 7 with intrinsic star formation rates of more than 2 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, and stellar masses above 4-9 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_{\odot}$. In addition, the paper presents realistic MRS simulated observations of the expected (rest-frame) optical and near-infrared spectra for some spectroscopically confirmed EoR sources detected by ALMA as [OIII]88$\mu$m emitters. The MRS simulated spectra cover a wide range of low metallicities from about 0.2 to 0.02Z$_{\odot}$, and different [OIII]88$\mu$m/[OIII]0.5007$\mu$m line ratios. The simulated 10ks MRS spectra show S/N in the range of 5 to 90 for H$\beta$, [OIII]0.4959,0.5007$\mu$m, H$\alpha$ and HeI1.083$\mu$m emission lines of MACS1149-JD1 at z = 9.11, independent of metallicity. In addition, deep 40 ks simulated spectra of the luminous merger candidate B14-65666 at z=7.15 shows the MRS capabilities of detecting, or putting strong upper limits, on the [NII]0.6584$\mu$m, [SII]0.6717,0.6731$\mu$m, and [SIII]0.9069,0.9532$\mu$m emission lines. Stellar masses in future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) deep blank-fields will be mainly derived fitting the spectral energy distribution with theoretical galaxy templates. We investigate the uncertainties and biases of the stellar masses derived by using the LePhare code for spectral energy distribution fitting and the Yggdrasil theoretical templates. We consider a sample of mock galaxies at z$=$7-10 with mock JWST observations with S/N$_{F150W}\geqslant$ 10. Our goal is to provide a list of statistical stellar mass corrections to include on the stellar mass derivation for different output galaxy properties and JWST filter combinations to correct for template degeneracies. Median statistical stellar mass corrections vary from -0.83 dex to 0.87 dex, while 25$\%$ (75$\%$) quartiles range from -0.83 dex (-0.67 dex) to 0.51 dex (0.88 dex), depending on filter combinations and galaxy models. The most challenging cases are galaxies with nebular emission lines, especially the ones that are wrongly identified as galaxies without, relative dust-free galaxies and galaxies with small metallicities (i.e. Z$=1/50Z_{\odot}$). The stellar mass estimation of galaxies correctly identified without emission lines is generally fine, except at z$=$10 when considering only the 8 NIRCam bands, which make the MIRI bands very valuable. We have tested our stellar mass corrections using the public JAGUAR galaxy catalogue, deriving that the average discrepancy in the recovered stellar mass distribution decreases by 20-50$\%$ at z$>$7 after the correction. We found that without the stellar-mass corrections the number of low-mass galaxies (M$^{*}<10^{7}M_{\odot}$) is overestimated, which can potentially lead to systematic errors in the calculation of the galaxy stellar mass function faint-end slope at high z., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication at the ApJS

We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy 'Ion2' at z=3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC-emitter at z=2.37, known as the 'Sunburst' arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Lya has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionised tunnel through which both Lya and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index ([OIII]4959-5007 / [OII]3727-3729) of 9.18(-1.32/+1.82) is compatible to those measured in local (z~0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are narrow nebular high-ionisation metal lines with \sigma_v < 20 km/s, which confirms the presence of young hot, massive stars. The HeII1640 appears broad, consistent with a young stellar component including Wolf-Rayet stars. Similarly, the Sunburst LyC-emitter shows a triple-peaked Lya profile and from VLT/MUSE spectroscopy the presence of spectral features arising from young hot and massive stars. The strong lensing magnification, (\mu > 20), suggests that this exceptional object is a gravitationally-bound star cluster observed at a cosmological distance, with a stellar mass M <~ 10^7 Msun and an effective radius smaller than 20 pc. We carry out a detailed strong lensing analysis of a sub-sample of eight galaxy clusters of the CLASH survey, in the redshift range of $ z_{\rm cluster} = [0.23-0.59]$, using extensive spectroscopic information, primarily MUSE archival data complemented with CLASH-VLT redshift measurements. Different models are tested in each cluster depending on the complexity of its mass distribution and on the number of detected multiple images. Four clusters show more than five spectroscopically confirmed multiple image families. In this sample, we do not make use of families that are only photometrically identified, in order to reduce model degeneracies and systematics due to the potential misidentifications of some multiple images. We present spectroscopic confirmation of 27 multiply lensed sources, with no previous spectroscopic measurements, spanning over the redshift range of $z_{\rm src}=[0.7-6.1]$. Moreover, we confirm an average of $48$ galaxy members in the core of each cluster, thanks to the high efficiency and large field of view of MUSE. Despite having different properties (i.e., number of mass components, total mass, redshift, etc), the projected total mass and mass density profiles of all clusters have very similar shapes, when rescaled by independent measurements of $M_{200c}$ and $R_{200c}$. Specifically, we measure the mean value of the projected total mass of our cluster sample within 10 (20)% of $R_{200c}$ to be 0.13 (0.32) of $M_{200c}$, with a remarkably small scatter of 5 (6)%. Furthermore, the large number of high-z sources and the precise magnification maps derived in this work for four clusters add up to the sample of high-quality gravitational telescopes to be used to study the faint and distant Universe. VANDELS is a uniquely-deep spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies with the VIMOS spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). The survey has obtained ultra-deep optical (0.48 < lambda < 1.0 micron) spectroscopy of ~2100 galaxies within the redshift interval 1.0 < z < 7.0, over a total area of ~0.2 sq. degrees centred on the CANDELS UDS and CDFS fields. Based on accurate photometric redshift pre-selection, 85% of the galaxies targeted by VANDELS were selected to be at z>=3. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the fundamental aim of the survey is to provide the high signal-to-noise ratio spectra necessary to measure key physical properties such as stellar population ages, masses, metallicities and outflow velocities from detailed absorption-line studies. Using integration times calculated to produce an approximately constant signal-to-noise ratio (20 < t_int < 80 hours), the VANDELS survey targeted: a) bright star-forming galaxies at 2.4 < z < 5.5, b) massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 < z < 2.5, c) fainter star-forming galaxies at 3.0 < z < 7.0 and d) X-ray/Spitzer-selected active galactic nuclei and Herschel-detected galaxies. By targeting two extragalactic survey fields with superb multi-wavelength imaging data, VANDELS will produce a unique legacy data set for exploring the physics underpinning high-redshift galaxy evolution. We use Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of the galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223 to explore the kinematics of the grand-design spiral galaxy Sp1149 hosting the SN Refsdal. Sp1149 lies at $z\simeq1.49$, has a stellar mass $M_*\simeq5\times10^9 \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$, a star-formation rate $\mathrm{SFR} \simeq1-6 \, \mathrm{M_\odot/yr}$ and represents a likely progenitor of a Milky-Way-like galaxy. All the four multiple images of Sp1149 in our data show strong OII-line emissions pointing to a clear rotation pattern. We take advantage of the gravitational lensing magnification effect ($\simeq 4 \times$) on the OII emission of the least distorted image to fit 3D kinematic models to the MUSE data-cube and derive the rotation curve and the velocity dispersion profile of Sp1149. We find that the rotation curve steeply rises, peaks at $R\simeq1$ kpc and then (initially) declines and flattens to an average $V_\mathrm{flat} = 128^{+29}_{-19}$ km/s. The shape of the rotation curve is well determined but the actual value of $V_\mathrm{flat}$ is quite uncertain because of the nearly face-on configuration of the galaxy. The intrinsic velocity dispersion due to gas turbulence is almost constant across the entire disc with an average of $27\pm5$ km/s. This value is consistent with $z=0$ measurements in the ionized gas component and a factor 2-4 lower than other estimates in different galaxies at similar redshifts. The average stellar-to-total mass fraction is of the order of one fifth. Our kinematic analysis returns the picture of a regular star-forming, mildly turbulent, rotation-dominated ($V / \sigma\simeq5$) spiral galaxy in a 4 Gyr old Universe., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. We report on the serendipitous discovery of a z=4.0, M1500=-22.20 star-forming galaxy (Ion3) showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (~60% escaping), a remarkable multiple peaked Lya emission, and significant Lya radiation directly emerging at the resonance frequency. This is the highest redshift confirmed LyC emitter in which the ionising and Lya radiation possibly share a common ionised cavity (with N_HI<10^17.2 cm^-2). Ion3 is spatially resolved, it shows clear stellar winds signatures like the P-Cygni NV1240 profile, and has blue ultraviolet continuum (\beta = -2.5 +/- 0.25, F_\lambda~ \lambda^\beta) with weak low-ionisation interstellar metal lines. Deep VLT/HAWKI Ks and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um and 4.5um imaging show a clear photometric signature of the Halpha line with equivalent width of 1000A rest-frame emerging over a flat continuum (Ks-4.5um ~ 0). From the SED fitting we derive a stellar mass of 1.5x10^9 Msun, SFR of 140 Msun/yr and age of ~10 Myr, with a low dust extinction, E(B-V)< 0.1, placing the source in the starburst region of the SFR-M^* plane. Ion3 shows similar properties of another LyC emitter previously discovered (z=3.21, Ion2, Vanzella et al. 2016). The Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA Ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) has obtained the largest ultra-deep Spitzer maps to date in a single field of the sky. We considered the sample of about 66,000 SMUVS sources at $z=2-6$ to investigate the evolution of dusty and non-dusty galaxies with stellar mass through the analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). We further divide our non-dusty galaxy sample with rest-frame optical colours to isolate red quiescent (`passive') galaxies. At each redshift, we identify a characteristic stellar mass in the GSMF above which dusty galaxies dominate, or are at least as important as non-dusty galaxies. Below that stellar mass, non-dusty galaxies comprise about 80% of all sources, at all redshifts except at $z=4-5$. The percentage of dusty galaxies at $z=4-5$ is unusually high: 30-40% for $M_{*}=10^9 - 10^{10.5} \, \rm M_\odot$ and $>80\%$ at $M_*>10^{11} \, \rm M_\odot$, which indicates that dust obscuration is of major importance in this cosmic period. The overall percentage of massive ($\log_{10} (M_*/M_\odot)>10.6$) galaxies that are quiescent increases with decreasing redshift, reaching $>30\%$ at $z\sim2$. Instead, the quiescent percentage among intermediate-mass galaxies (with $\log_{10} (M_*/M_\odot)=9.7-10.6$) stays roughly constant at a $\sim 10\%$ level. Our results indicate that massive and intermediate-mass galaxies clearly have different evolutionary paths in the young Universe, and are consistent with the scenario of galaxy downsizing., Comment: Final version accepted for publication at the ApJ. We investigate the X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) properties of millimeter galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South (GOODS-S) field detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), by utilizing the Chandra 7-Ms data, the deepest X-ray survey to date. Our millimeter galaxy sample comes from the ASAGAO survey covering 26 arcmin$^2$ (12 sources at a 1.2-mm flux-density limit of $\approx$0.6 mJy), supplemented by the deeper but narrower 1.3-mm survey of a part of the ASAGAO field by Dunlop et al.\ (2017). Fourteen out of the total 25 millimeter galaxies have Chandra counterparts. The observed AGN fractions at $z=1.5-3$ is found to be 90$^{+8}_{-19}$\% and $57^{+23}_{-25}$\% for the ultra/luminous infrared galaxies with $\log L_{\rm IR}/L_{\odot} = 12-12.8$ and $\log L_{\rm IR}/L_{\odot} = 11.5-12$, respectively. The majority ($\sim$2/3) of the ALMA and/or Herschel detected X-ray AGNs at $z=1.5-3$ appear to be star-formation dominant populations, having $L_{\rm X}$/ $L_{\rm IR}$ ratios smaller than the "simultaneous evolution" value expected from the local black-hole mass to stellar mass ($M_{\rm BH}$-$M_*$) relation. On the basis of the $L_{\rm X}$ and stellar mass relation, we infer that a large fraction of star-forming galaxies at $z=1.5-3$ have black hole masses smaller than those expected from the local $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_*$ relation. This is opposite to previous reports on luminous AGN at same redshifts detected in wider and shallower surveys, which are subject to selection biases against lower luminosity AGN. We present a new strong lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster MACS J1206.2-0847 (MACS 1206), at z=0.44, using deep spectroscopy from CLASH-VLT and VLT/MUSE archival data in combination with imaging from the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble. MUSE observations enable the spectroscopic identification of 23 new multiply imaged sources, extending the previous compilations by a factor of approximately five. In total, we use the positional measurements of 82 spectroscopic multiple images belonging to 27 families at z=1.0-6.1 to reconstruct the projected total mass distribution of MACS 1206. Remarkably, 11 multiple images are found within 50 kpc of the brightest cluster galaxy, making this an unprecedented set of constraints for the innermost projected mass distribution of a galaxy cluster. We thus find that, although dynamically relaxed, the smooth matter component (dark matter plus hot gas) of MACS 1206 shows a significant asymmetry, which closely follows the asymmetric distribution of the stellar component (galaxy members and intracluster light). We determine the value of the innermost logarithmic slope of the projected total mass density profile and find it to be close to the canonical Navarro-Frenk-White value. We demonstrate that this quantity is very robust against different parametrizations of the diffuse mass component; however, this is not the case when only one central image is used in the mass reconstruction. The analysis of galaxies on the star formation rate - stellar mass (SFR-M*) plane is a powerful diagnostic for galaxy evolution at different cosmic times. We consider a sample of 24463 galaxies from the CANDELS/GOODS-S survey to conduct a detailed analysis of the SFR-M* relation at redshifts 0.5$\leqslant z<$3 over more than three dex in stellar mass. To obtain SFR estimates, we utilise mid- and far-IR photometry when available, and rest-UV fluxes for all the other galaxies. We perform our analysis in different redshift bins, with two different methods: 1) a linear regression fitting of all star-forming galaxies, defined as those with specific star formation rates $\rm log_{10}(sSFR/yr^{-1}) > -9.8$, similarly to what is typically done in the literature; 2) a multi-Gaussian decomposition to identify the galaxy main sequence (MS), the starburst sequence and the quenched galaxy cloud. We find that the MS slope becomes flatter when higher stellar mass cuts are adopted, and that the apparent slope change observed at high masses depends on the SFR estimation method. In addition, the multi-Gaussian decomposition reveals the presence of a starburst population which increases towards low stellar masses and high redshifts. We find that starbursts make up ~5% of all galaxies at z=0.5-1.0, while they account for ~16% of galaxies at 2$

Imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will allow for observing the bulk of distant galaxies at the epoch of reionisation. The recovery of their properties, such as age, color excess E(B-V), specific star formation rate (sSFR) and stellar mass, will mostly rely on spectral energy distribution fitting, based on the data provided by JWST's two imager cameras, namely the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid Infrared Imager (MIRI). In this work we analyze the effect of choosing different combinations of NIRCam and MIRI broad-band filters, from 0.6 {\mu}m to 7.7 {\mu}m, on the recovery of these galaxy properties. We performed our tests on a sample of 1542 simulated galaxies, with known input properties, at z=7-10. We found that, with only 8 NIRCam broad-bands, we can recover the galaxy age within 0.1 Gyr and the color excess within 0.06 mag for 70% of the galaxies. Besides, the stellar masses and sSFR are recovered within 0.2 and 0.3 dex, respectively, at z=7-9. Instead, at z=10, no NIRCam band traces purely the {\lambda}> 4000 {\AA} regime and the percentage of outliers in stellar mass (sSFR) increases by > 20% (> 90%), in comparison to z=9. The MIRI F560W and F770W bands are crucial to improve the stellar mass and the sSFR estimation at z=10. When nebular emission lines are present, deriving correct galaxy properties is challenging, at any redshift and with any band combination. In particular, the stellar mass is systematically overestimated in up to 0.3 dex on average with NIRCam data alone and including MIRI observations improves only marginally the estimation., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. We study a large galaxy sample from the Spitzer Matching Survey of the UltraVISTA ultra-deep Stripes (SMUVS) to search for sources with enhanced 3.6 micron fluxes indicative of strong Halpha emission at z=3.9-4.9. We find that the percentage of "Halpha excess" sources reaches 37-40% for galaxies with stellar masses log10(M*/Msun) ~ 9-10, and decreases to <20% at log10(M*/Msun) ~ 10.7. At higher stellar masses, however, the trend reverses, although this is likely due to AGN contamination. We derive star formation rates (SFR) and specific SFR (sSFR) from the inferred Halpha equivalent widths (EW) of our "Halpha excess" galaxies. We show, for the first time, that the "Halpha excess" galaxies clearly have a bimodal distribution on the SFR-M* plane: they lie on the main sequence of star formation (with log10(sSFR/yr^{-1})<-8.05) or in a starburst cloud (with log10(sSFR/yr^{-1}) >-7.60). The latter contains ~15% of all the objects in our sample and accounts for >50% of the cosmic SFR density at z=3.9-4.9, for which we derive a robust lower limit of 0.066 Msun yr^{-1} Mpc^{-3}. Finally, we identify an unusual >50sigma overdensity of z=3.9-4.9 galaxies within a 0.20 x 0.20 sq. arcmin region. We conclude that the SMUVS unique combination of area and depth at mid-IR wavelengths provides an unprecedented level of statistics and dynamic range which are fundamental to reveal new aspects of galaxy evolution in the young Universe., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. We analyze a sample of $z$-dropout galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS South and UDS fields that have been targeted by a dedicated spectroscopic campaign aimed at detecting their Ly$\alpha$ line. Deep IRAC observations at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m are used to determine the strength of optical emission lines affecting these bands at z$\sim$6.5-6.9 in order to i) investigate possible physical differences between Ly$\alpha$ emitting and non-emitting sources; ii) constrain the escape fraction of ionizing photons; iii) provide an estimate of the specific star-formation rate at high redshifts. We find evidence of strong [OIII]+H$\beta$ emission in the average (stacked) SEDs of galaxies both with and without Ly$\alpha$ emission. The blue IRAC [3.6]-[4.5] color of the stack with detected Ly$\alpha$ line can be converted into a rest-frame equivalent width EW([OIII]+H$\beta$)=1500$^{+530}_{-440}\AA$ assuming a flat intrinsic stellar continuum. This strong optical line emission enables a first estimate of f$_{esc}\lesssim$20% on the escape fraction of ionizing photons from Ly$\alpha$ detected objects. The objects with no Ly$\alpha$ line show less extreme EW([OIII]+H$\beta$)=520$^{+170}_{-150}\AA$ suggesting different physical conditions of the HII regions with respect to Ly$\alpha$-emitting ones, or a larger f$_{esc}$. The latter case is consistent with a combined evolution of f$_{esc}$ and the neutral hydrogen fraction as an explanation of the lack of bright Ly$\alpha$ emission at z$>$6. We study the spectrophotometric properties of a highly magnified (\mu~40-70) pair of stellar systems identified at z=3.2222 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416. Five multiple images (out of six) have been spectroscopically confirmed by means of VLT/MUSE and VLT/X-Shooter observations. Each image includes two faint (m_uv~30.6), young (<100 Myr), low-mass (<10^7 Msun), low-metallicity (12+Log(O/H)~7.7, or 1/10 solar) and compact (30 pc effective radius) stellar systems separated by ~300pc, after correcting for lensing amplification. We measured several rest-frame ultraviolet and optical narrow (\sigma_v <~ 25 km/s) high-ionization lines. These features may be the signature of very hot (T>50000 K) stars within dense stellar clusters, whose dynamical mass is likely dominated by the stellar component. Remarkably, the ultraviolet metal lines are not accompanied by Lya emission (e.g., CIV / Lya > 15), despite the fact that the Lya line flux is expected to be 150 times brighter (inferred from the Hbeta flux). A spatially-offset, strongly-magnified (\mu>50) Lya emission with a spatial extent <~7.6 kpc^2 is instead identified 2 kpc away from the system. The origin of such a faint emission can be the result of fluorescent Lya induced by a transverse leakage of ionizing radiation emerging from the stellar systems and/or can be associated to an underlying and barely detected object (with m_uv > 34 de-lensed). This is the first confirmed metal-line emitter at such low-luminosity and redshift without Lya emission, suggesting that, at least in some cases, a non-uniform covering factor of the neutral gas might hamper the Lya detection., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 2 Tables. We report on five compact, extremely young (<10Myr) and blue (\beta_UV<-2.5, F_\lambda =\lambda^\beta) objects observed with VLT/MUSE at redshift 3.1169, 3.235, in addition to three objects at z=6.145. These sources are magnified by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy clusters MACS~J0416 and AS1063. Their de-lensed half light radii (Re) are between 16 to 140pc, the stellar masses are ~1-20 X 10^6 Msun, the magnitudes are m_uv=28.8 - 31.4 (-173, elusive even in the deepest blank fields. We discuss how proto-GCs might contribute to the ionization budget of the universe and augment Lya visibility during reionization. We present physical properties [redshifts (z), star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (Mstar)] of bright (S850>4mJy) submm galaxies in the ~2deg2 COSMOS and UDS fields selected with SCUBA-2/JCMT. We complete the galaxy identification process for all (~2000) S/N>3.5 850-um sources, but focus our scientific analysis on a high-quality sub-sample of 651 S/N>4 sources with complete multi-wavelength coverage including 1.1-mm imaging. We check the reliability of our identifications, and the robustness of the SCUBA-2 fluxes by revisiting the recent ALMA follow-up of 29 sources in our sample. Considering >4mJy ALMA sources, our identification method has a completeness of ~86 per cent with a reliability of ~92 per cent, and only ~15-20 per cent of sources are significantly affected by multiplicity (when a secondary component contributes >1/3 of the primary source flux). The impact of source blending on the 850-um source counts as determined with SCUBA-2 is modest; scaling the single-dish fluxes by ~0.9 reproduces the ALMA source counts. For our final SCUBA-2 sample we find median z=2.40+0.10-0.04, SFR=287+-6Moyr-1, and log(Mstar/Mo)=11.12+-0.02 (the latter for 349/651 sources with optical identifications). These properties clearly locate bright submm galaxies on the high-mass end of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies out to z~6, suggesting that major mergers are not a dominant driver of the high-redshift submm-selected population. Their number densities are also consistent with the evolving galaxy stellar mass function. We report the spectroscopic confirmation of 22 new multiply lensed sources behind the Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) galaxy cluster MACS~J0416.1$-$2403 (MACS 0416), using archival data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the VLT. Combining with previous spectroscopic measurements of 15 other multiply imaged sources, we obtain a sample of 102 secure multiple images with measured redshifts, the largest to date in a single strong lensing system. The newly confirmed sources are largely low-luminosity Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters with redshift in the range [3.08-6.15]. With such a large number of secure constraints, and a significantly improved sample of galaxy members in the cluster core, we have improved our previous strong lensing model and obtained a robust determination of the projected total mass distribution of MACS 0416. We find evidence of three cored dark-matter halos, adding to the known complexity of this merging system. The total mass density profile, as well as the sub-halo population, are found in good agreement with previous works. We update and make public the redshift catalog of MACS 0416 from our previous spectroscopic campaign with the new MUSE redshifts. We report on the discovery of extended Ly-alpha nebulae at z~3.3 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF, ~ 40 kpc X 80 kpc) and behind the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster MACSJ0416 (~ 40kpc), spatially associated with groups of star-forming galaxies. VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy reveals a complex structure with a spatially-varying double peaked Ly-alpha emission. Overall, the spectral profiles of the two Ly-alpha nebulae are remarkably similar, both showing a prominent blue emission, more intense and slightly broader than the red peak. From the first nebula, located in the HUDF, no X-ray emission has been detected, disfavoring the possible presence of AGNs. Spectroscopic redshifts have been derived for 11 galaxies within two arcsec from the nebula and spanning the redshift range 1.037

In spite of their conjectured importance for the Epoch of Reionization, the properties of low-mass galaxies are currently still under large debate. In this article, we study the stellar and gaseous properties of faint, low-mass galaxies at z>3. We observed the Frontier Fields cluster Abell S1063 with MUSE over a 2 arcmin^2 field, and combined integral-field spectroscopy with gravitational lensing to perform a blind search for intrinsically faint Lya emitters (LAEs). We determined in total the redshift of 172 galaxies of which 14 are lensed LAEs at z=3-6.1. We increased the number of spectroscopically-confirmed multiple-image families from 6 to 17 and updated our gravitational-lensing model accordingly. The lensing-corrected Lya luminosities are with L(Lya) <= 10^41.5 erg/s among the lowest for spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at any redshift. We used expanding gaseous shell models to fit the Lya line profile, and find low column densities and expansion velocities. This is to our knowledge the first time that gaseous properties of such faint galaxies at z>=3 are reported. We performed SED modelling to broadband photometry from the U-band through the infrared to determine the stellar properties of these LAEs. The stellar masses are very low (10^{6-8} Msun), and are accompanied by very young ages of 1-100 Myr. The very high specific star formation rates (~100 Gyr^-1) are characteristic of starburst galaxies. The UV-continuum slopes beta are low in our sample, with beta<-2 for all galaxies with M_star<10^8 Msun. We conclude that our low-mass galaxies at 3
