A student's experience of assessment has an important determining effect on the way in which they approach learning. This case study examines students' experience of assessment and feedback in a biomedicine degree programme. A mixed-method approach combined with an assessment audit and an analysis of formative assessment use provided a holistic view of students' experience of assessment and feedback across years 1-3 of the degree. The Assessment Experience Questionnaire was utilised together with data from open-ended narrative responses to give insight into students' assessment and feedback experiences. Students (N = 960) reported diverse views about their experiences of assessment across the three years. Third-year students rated their assessment experience significantly lower than did second-year students but not as low as did first-year students. Analysis revealed significant differences in six of eight subdimensions between year 1 and year 3. The trend was downwards, with third-year students reporting lower agreement for the categories of 'Quantity of effort', 'Coverage of syllabus', 'Use of feedback', 'Appropriate assessment', 'Clear goals and standards' and 'Overall satisfaction with the course'. An assessment audit revealed a high assessment load and high dependence on exams. Frequent assessment schedules were seen as positive and formative assessments were utilised by most students. A major issue was a lack of clarity concerning goals and standards for assessments. To enable an improvement in the student experience of assessment and feedback, a dialogue about assessment tasks involving good clear communication between teachers, policy makers and students is needed.

Adolescents' empathy is an essential socio-emotional concept that helps mediate friendships and family relationships. Year 10 boys, aged 15-17 years, were invited to participate in a five-day experiential education program (Design Week) based on a social equity challenge using a Design Thinking concept. Students worked in small groups, mentored by experts. Student groups developed innovative solutions to support women who experienced domestic and family violence. As a key outcome, students' empathy measured by the Comprehensive State Empathy Scale increased significantly from a baseline of 63% to 75% at post-test, representing a large effect size (d= 1.06). Six empathy subscale factors were also significantly increased (p= <0.05). The program was feasible and was rated by teachers and students as engaging, relevant to learning, and learning about complex social issues. This paper presents a case study of the Design Week program, shown to be worthy of further testing with secondary school adolescents.

Objective: This study explored young university students' (aged 18-24 years) health literacy, asthma experiences and help-seeking behaviours to inform the development of a web-based asthma education intervention relevant to this age group. Design: Exploratory mixed-methods design incorporateing a health literacy survey and interviews, plus the development of a web-based educational video. Setting: Participants were students at two universities in the state of Victoria, Australia. Method: In total, 20 asthma sufferers were interviewed by trained pairs of university students. Interpretative phenomenology underpinned the narrative analysis and enabled the description of the participants' lived experience. A branching e-simulation video was developed. Results: A number of key themes were identified: "Life with asthma", including "A life of vigilance" regarding asthma triggers, lifestyle limitations and heightened sensitivities; "Asthma management--call Mum", a lack of knowledge and support systems with substantial maternal reliance; "Health literacy: family and Dr Google", denoting low health literacy levels with passive reluctant involvement in personal health management; and "Information gathering--one size doesn't fit all"--in the form of the need for immediate gratification and resource variety. Based on interviewees' words and terminology, we designed an interactive branching educational video for YouTube portraying a young person (an actor) during an asthma flare-up. Conclusion: Young adults lacked insight into their condition and even after moving away from home, relied on Google searches and/or parents' advice. To enhance health-seeking behaviours, interactive programmes with smartphone access may be valuable. Our open access programme Help Trent Vent provides an educational resource for young people with asthma and for health education teams, to reinforce asthma knowledge.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a high rate of preventable maternal and neonatal deaths. Developing midwifery leadership is vital to addressing the current deficits in health outcomes for women and their babies. The PNG Midwifery Leadership Buddy Program responds to this need through leadership training and partnering of midwives across PNG and Australia. Participants in the program undertake a workshop in Port Moresby and commit to a 12-month peer support relationship with a midwife 'buddy'. To evaluate participants' experiences of the Buddy Program and the impact of the program on leadership skills. All 23 midwives who had completed the program were invited to participate in the evaluation. The study used a concurrent mixed methods approach. Qualitative data were collected via interviews and then thematically analysed. Quantitative data were collected via a survey and analysed with descriptive statistics, then findings were triangulated. Participants reported increased confidence for leadership, action and advocacy. Numerous quality improvement projects were implemented in health services in PNG. Challenges to the success of the program included technological limitations, cultural differences and the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants reported the PNG Midwifery Leadership Buddy Program was successful in increasing their leadership skills and collaborative opportunities, as well as strengthening midwifery more broadly. While there were barriers, most participants valued the experience and believed it benefited them professionally and personally The Buddy Program provides a practical model for building midwifery leadership capacity that may be transferrable to other contexts. • Virtual (screen-based) simulations assist nursing students' clinical learning. • A collection of open access and fee-based virtual technologies is presented. • Results meet a need for educators to access virtual simulation applications. Virtual (screen-based) simulations have been utilized to help progress pre-licensure nursing students' remote clinical learning during the recent pandemic. This mapping review, reports an anthology of virtual simulation technology sources from simulation education web sites and library sources. Two authors verified available sources and categorized these based on cost; either open access, or subscription-based. A list of 40 virtual simulation sources including virtual simulations, virtual reality simulations and virtual games, is presented. These provide faculty with a choice of virtual simulation modalities for various levels of nurse learners. Numerous virtual simulation technology applications are available for educators to utilize in teaching nursing students. To identify, critically appraise and synthesise evidence of the use and effectiveness of the arts for enhancing pre-registration/prelicensure healthcare students' empathy skills. A systematic review of mixed methods literature. A search of six electronic databases was conducted. Articles describing English language, peer-reviewed, primary research studies reporting empathy as an outcome of an arts-based intervention with pre-registration/prelicensure healthcare students (years 1–7) and published between 2000 and 2024 were eligible for inclusion. The JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis guided the review and a convergent segregated methodology was used to synthesise the results. Methodological rigour of included studies was examined using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Twenty studies from 12 countries described the use of the arts to develop empathy, with visual arts being the most common approach (n = 8). Other modalities included film, drama, digital stories, literature, creative writing, music, poetry, photography and dance. Studies included nursing, medicine and dental, pharmacy and/or health sciences students. Ten studies used quantitative methods, three qualitative, and seven used mixed methods designs. Of the studies that presented pre-post outcome measures, nine reported significant gains in empathy scores at post-test and two reported non-significant gains in empathy. In eight studies, empathy scores demonstrated a significant intervention effect with effect sizes ranging from moderate (d = 0.52) to large (d = 1.19). Findings from qualitative studies revealed that arts pedagogies support students to better understand the perspectives of people with a lived experience of suffering but that these approaches are sometimes perceived negatively by students. Arts interventions generally have a positive effect on healthcare students' empathy levels and enable a nuanced conceptual understanding of empathy. • Bibliometrics is a quantitative method for identifying leading research. • The eight most influential studies present a simulation overview. • Studies provide faculty with ready access to simulation knowledge. • Simulation-based education is a priority in nursing education and faculty need to become expert purveyors of this approach. • We conducted a citation analysis to identify the most influential simulation studies. • Our results form a knowledge resource for nursing faculty. Simulation studies in nursing education are increasing, highlighting the need to identify the most cited and influential studies. A bibliometric analysis aimed to describe performance characteristics of the top 40 cited nursing simulation studies within the last three years, mined from the Scopus database. The top 40 studies were published between 2003 and 2017. There was a median study age of 13 years and citations ranged from 674 down to 70. Overall, using 2019 citations as a baseline, extracted articles showed strong citation gains of a median 21% over the last three years. The top cited studies focused on development of simulation-based education and associated learning outcomes. Literature reviews emerged as key information sources, accruing significantly higher citation counts than primary research and descriptive studies. The scholarship of evidenced based simulation is still maturing. Findings from this study enable an understanding of citation outcomes and foci for future impactful research. To develop an evidence-based framework of nurse preceptor competency domains and competency descriptors for use in nurse preceptor professional development. Nurse preceptors are registered nurses who coach, support and assess nursing students while simultaneously caring for patients. Working as both clinician and educator requires preceptors to develop additional skills. However, preceptor preparation is often overlooked and may not be evidence based. A modified e-Delphi study. A three-phase e-Delphi method informed the study that was conducted between March and September 2023. In the first preparatory phase an expert group distilled the results of a previous literature review identifying seven preceptor competency domains and more than 200 competency descriptors. Two e-Delphi rounds followed. A 70% rater agreement response threshold was chosen as appropriate in this study. The CREDES reporting framework was followed. In the preparatory phase, the expert group (n=6) reached consensus on six preceptor domains and 57 preceptor descriptors. In Round 1, nurse preceptors (n= 89) rated the domains and descriptors using a four-point Likert scale; from not important to very important. Six domains and 34 competency descriptors were ranked as very important'. Round 2 participants (n=30) who opted in from Round 1 indicated their 100% agreement with the Round 1 results. The results reveal that preceptors resonate intuitively with the six domains Role model, Facilitator, Leader, Evaluator, Teacher and Coach and the related descriptors. The preceptor evidence-based competency framework offers registered nurse preceptors and their employers the opportunity to focus efforts in developing a nurse preceptor workforce. The framework can be used to design preceptor professional development and offers registered nurses a self-assessment tool to identify their preceptorship skills strengths and areas for development. If implemented in these ways the framework may benefit healthcare organisations to provide quality nurse preceptorship, thus enhancing the clinical learning experiences of nursing preceptees. Anxiety and depression affects many pregnant women. Massage may be beneficial for supporting mental wellbeing during this time. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a partner-delivered relaxation massage program for pregnant women, and its impact on symptoms of antenatal anxiety, stress and depression. A feasibility randomised controlled trial was conducted to compare partner-delivered relaxation massage (intervention) with self-directed stress management (control). Women attended an initial workshop at 28–32 weeks gestation followed by completion of a self-directed massage or stress management program. Qualitative data about the feasibility and acceptability (primary outcomes) were collected via online participant diaries and post-birth interviews. Anxiety, depression and stress symptoms (secondary outcomes) were assessed using the Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Birth outcomes were collected at the post- birth interview. A total of 14 women/partner dyads in the massage group and 13 women in the self-directed stress management group, attended the initial workshops. When interviewed, participants from both groups reported that the programs were feasible and acceptable. Women's mean scores on all subscales of the DASS-21significantly decreased over time in both the intervention and the control group. Pregnant women found the partner-delivered massage program to be feasible and acceptable. Both programs decreased women's symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress with no significant differences identified between the two groups. An adequately powered experimental study with a large representative sample is needed to determine whether partner-delivered relaxation massage reduces pregnant women's symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress. To evaluate the quality of student nurses' experiences and overall satisfaction with professional experience placements at a regional Australian University. Professional experience placements are a crucial component of pre-registration nursing programs. However, the absence of standardised approaches to assess placement quality has created uncertainty on what constitutes a high-quality placement from a student's perspective. Cross-sectional survey. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was administered online to 800 second and third year undergraduate nursing students at an Australian university. The survey contains demographic questions (e.g., year of study, placement specialty, duration, setting and geographic location), a validated Placement Evaluation Tool and free-text comments. The Placement Evaluation Tool is a 20-item questionnaire that measures two key factors: clinical environment (factor 1), learning support (factor 2) and overall satisfaction of students' learning experiences during a professional experience placement. A descriptive analysis was conducted to evaluate the student's overall experience and satisfaction. Multivariate linear regression was used to assess the relationship between the quality of the student experience and demographics and presented as beta coefficient (β) and confidence interval (CI). Free-text comments were thematically analysed. A total of 1104 survey responses were received (as students may rate more than one placement), with an estimated 71% response rate. Most responses (60.3%) were third-year students. Most students experienced high-quality placements, reflected in the overall positive placement experience (PET item 1–19 score: mean 85.9 out of 95) and high student satisfaction (PET item 20: mean 8.53 out of 10). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that the third year of study and public facilities were independent predictors of positive student experiences (β: 2.61, 95% CI: 0.75, 4.47 and β: 3.72, CI: 0.90, 6.55, respectively). Further analysis of PET items related to factor 1 and factor 2 revealed that high positive experiences in public facilities may be due to the higher learning support (β: 2.54, CI: 0.80, 4.27). Three main themes were perceived to be important to students' professional experience: (i) staff and facilitator attitudes, (ii) learning opportunities and (iii) a team-based learning environment. Most students reported high-quality placement experience and high satisfaction; however, a lack of learning support may contribute to less positive student experiences. Abstract Aims To describe a funded proposal for the development of an on-line evidence based educational program for the management of deteriorating patients. Background There are international concerns regarding the management of deteriorating patients with issues around the ‘failure to rescue’. The primary response to these issues has been the development of medical emergency teams with little focus on the education of primary first responders. Design/Methods A mixed methods triangulated convergent design. In this four phase proposal we plan to 1. examine nursing student team ability to manage deteriorating patients and based upon these findings 2. develop web based educational material, including interactive scenarios. This educational material will be tested and refined in the third Phase 3, prior to evaluation and dissemination in the final phase. Conclusion This project aims to enhance knowledge development for the management of deteriorating patients through rigorous assessment of team performance and to produce a contemporary evidence-based online training program.

• Simulation was successfully used to teach preregistration nurses patient safety. • Knowledge and skills gains translated to clinical placements was under reported. • Safety standards were well represented in the designs. • Simulation design standards were underreported. This integrative literature review aimed to examine preregistration nursing simulation-based education aligned to patient safety. Understanding quality standards and simulation best practices used to guide the simulation activities also featured. Eight data bases were searched using a standardized search strategy. A total of 33 studies met the inclusion criteria. Six patient safety standards featured in over 38 simulation scenarios, particularly the management of deteriorating patients. Students' patient safety knowledge and simulated performances consistently returned significant gains following the interventions. Manikin-based, face to face delivery was the most commonly described simulation modality, followed by virtual simulation and virtual reality programmes. The evidence supports simulation as a beneficial technique for teaching patient safety in nursing education. In future, well planned controlled experimental studies are needed to deliver more evidence. Simulation design best practices aligned to international guidelines could be reported in more depth. Abstract Objective The objective of this systematic review was to identify, critically appraise and synthesize evidence for the effectiveness of empathy interventions in undergraduate nursing education. Design A systematic review of literature. Data Sources A three-stage systematic search of six electronic databases was conducted. Review Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guided the review. English language articles published between 2000 and 2018 were eligible. Methodological rigour was examined using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument. Changes in empathy were assessed using Cohen's effect size correlation (r) and reported as effective when the variance was >0.2 standard deviations (r ≥ 0.2). Results Of 23 included studies, four were experimental and four were case-control studies. Of these, the mean effect size was r = 0.45 and three were regarded as effective empathy interventions. Although 10 of 13 single group studies demonstrated a significant change in empathy between pre-test and post-test (p < 0.05), effect sizes were often low (mean r = 0.26). Six single-group studies reported an intervention effect of r > 0.2. The most effective empathy education involved immersive and experiential simulation-based interventions. Simulation modalities ranged from role plays, manikin-based scenarios, to 3D e-simulations and point-of-view simulations where students wore a hemiparesis suit\ Conclusions Nine of 23 empathy education studies in undergraduate nurse education demonstrated practical improvements in empathy. The most effective interventions were immersive and experiential simulations that focused on vulnerable patient groups and provided opportunities for guided reflection. We noted the research designs were limited in terms of levels of evidence and use of subjective measures. Larger experimental studies are required to provide higher levels of evidence to identify unequivocal outcomes in terms of empathy research. Abstract Clinical simulation is an essential component of health professional education. Digital technologies can provide students with near-reality, interactive virtual simulation learning experiences on static and mobile appliances. Clarification is needed, however, regarding the various types of virtual simulation and the different program components. We drew on published literature to define virtual simulation modalities and to offer definitive terminology to clarify the nomenclature and composition of virtual simulation. Student satisfaction is an important quality indicator in higher education, impacting student retention and institutional rankings. Healthcare education literature lacks factors related to student satisfaction. Reporting these elements might assist educators in curriculum design that helps to retain students. This is imperative for nursing education with the current global need for graduates. To explore, synthesize and report available evidence on conceptual elements underlying the formation of higher education students' satisfaction, with a focus on nursing education. Integrative review. Six databases were searched for learner experiences of satisfaction: MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, APA PsychArticles, PsychInfo. Articles were screened, assessed for quality and 12 nursing student studies and 10 conceptual studies of mixed student cohorts were reviewed. Peer-reviewed literature in English during the period 2012 to 2022 was reviewed using methods documented for an integrative review. Twenty-two included studies were mostly quasi-experimental, based on statistical analysis of higher education student surveys. Antecedent elements affecting satisfaction in mixed student cohorts were Service Quality, Institutional Image and perceived Value. These studies identified up to seven dimensions underlying student satisfaction. Nursing studies were focused on the quality of service delivery related to teaching and confirmed five elements: Faculty, Learning environment, Curriculum, Social interaction and Development. Conceptual studies also reported 'consequent' elements, high satisfaction resulting in positive student behavioural intent, loyalty and positive word of mouth. The details of antecedent and consequent elements that underlie student satisfaction are described. Conceptual studies of mixed student cohorts identified nine elements that inform student satisfaction with learning experiences. Nursing student studies tested fewer variables and confirmed up to five elements forming student satisfaction.
