Background: Epidemiological data reveal that 45% of persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) in France are more than 50 years. This population more than 50 is more susceptible to cancer, and this risk may be increased by frequent use of immunosuppressive drugs. Consequently, concerns have arisen about the potential increased risk of cancer in PwMS and how patients should be screened and managed in terms of cancer risk. Objective: To develop evidence-based recommendations to manage the coexistence of cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: The French Group for Recommendations in MS collected articles from PubMed and university databases covering the period January 1975 through June 2022. The RAND/UCLA method was employed to achieve formal consensus. MS experts comprehensively reviewed the full-text articles and developed the initial recommendations. A group of multidisciplinary health care specialists then validated the final proposal. Results: Five key questions were addressed, encompassing various topics such as cancer screening before or after initiating a disease-modifying therapy (DMT), appropriate management of MS in the context of cancer, recommended follow-up for cancer in patients receiving a DMT, and the potential reintroduction of a DMT after initial cancer treatment. Background: Advanced practice nurse (APN) roles bring great added value to health systems. However, their integration into the health workforce and the sustainability of the role depend on contextual factors surrounding their implementation. Aim: To explore the contextual factors that influence the organization, implementation, and performance of clinical practice among oncology APNs in Catalonia (Spain). Methods: This is a descriptive qualitative study. A framework of contextual factors was applied to explore the perspectives of 14 oncology APNs in public hospitals in Catalonia by means of semistructured interviews. Data were analyzed according to the thematic analysis approach. The COREQ checklist was used to report the study. Results: APNs in cancer care strongly depend on the hospital environment where they are introduced. Recognition by the multidisciplinary team, the existence of mentoring experiences, and networking between APNs are critical factors that can help or hinder the development and autonomy of the APNs. Likewise, support from nursing managers and directors is decisive in defining the professional profile, establishing accountability mechanisms, and securing financial resources, including economic recognition. Factors related to the external environment can also contribute, including a standardized national APN model and scientific societies. Conclusions: Contextual factors around clinical practice, institutional structures, and professional networks are crucial determinants for adequately integrating APNs at the health system level. Implications for nursing policy: Professional bodies and national nursing organizations should lay the groundwork for defining standards of practice and advocate for specific regulations. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is unrelenting. As neither rest nor sleep ameliorates cognitive, emotional, and physical symptoms, quality of life is diminished. This study examines resistance training (RT) effectiveness on CRF in cancer survivors. The secondary aims were to identify the dose-response relationship of RT frequency, intensity, and volume on CRF in different cancer survivor populations. Systematic searches via numerous databases for RCTs were performed in June 2022. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROM), were analysed, pre-to-post intervention, using a random-effects model. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale informed methodological quality assessment. Eight studies were included (cancer survivors: breast (BCS) = 5; endometrial (ECS) = 1; prostate (PCS) = 2). Overall, RT interventions ≥ 6 weeks elicited large significant reductions in CRF for FACIT-F (SMD = 0.932, p = <0.001) and moderate significant reductions in CRF for PFS-R (SMD = −0.622, p = 0.004). Main findings indicate that RT ameliorates CRF, especially in BCS; however, individualised approaches should be advocated. Supervised training elicited the greatest positive outcomes, thus should be a pivotal part of the cancer rehabilitation pathway. Future studies should be adequately powered, undertake discrete analyses of different cancer types, and investigate chronic RT effects. Continual illness uncertainty can affect how people perceive and interpret their well-being. Some cognitive and spiritual factors may be involved in the management of disruptive thoughts and emotions that can emerge during the experience of cancer. An evidence-based integrative model was developed to evaluate and show the role that mindfulness, acceptance, self-efficacy, uncertainty, meaning, and purpose in life play in the self-perception of well-being in individuals with cancer. This evidence-based integrative model was conducted using relevant and selected studies. An integrative model for self-perception of well-being has been proposed. This model integrates evidence-based findings and provides clear principles for clinicians and researchers. This integrative model proposes that mindfulness, acceptance, self-efficacy perception, and uncertainty can predict how people with cancer perceive their well-being. The model also posits that meaning and purpose in life can act as mediators or moderators of this prediction. This integrative model involves the multidimensionality of human beings and facilitates the understanding of some key factors for the design of therapeutic approaches such as Acceptance & Commitment Therapy or Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy. Mindfulness, acceptance, self-efficacy, uncertainty, meaning, and purpose in life can be highly relevant for clinical oncology. An integrative model is proposed to understand the combined influence of these factors on patients with cancer. This model may favor a better integration of well-known interventions, such as Mindfulness-based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy (MCP). Cancer cells change phenotype through cancer evolution; some phenotype changes are caused by underlying genetic mutations, but many are due to non-genetic mechanisms. We suggest separating non-genetic phenotype changes into two distinct mechanisms: changes induced by microenvironmental stimuli (that we term 'phenotypic plasticity') and changes induced by stochastic cell-intrinsic effects (that we term 'phenotypic noise'). We discuss how lineage tracing methods – either experimental or those that make use of sporadic mutations to mark lineages – can be used to distinguish between phenotypic plasticity and noise. Distinguishing between phenotypic plasticity and noise guides mechanistic work to determine the molecular causes of phenotype change, and will ultimately accelerate efforts to control or prevent phenotype changes that enable cancer cells to resist therapies. Non-genetic alterations can produce changes in a cell's phenotype. In cancer, these phenomena can influence a cell's fitness by conferring access to heritable, beneficial phenotypes. Herein, we argue that current discussions of 'phenotypic plasticity' in cancer evolution ignore a salient feature of the original definition: namely, that it occurs in response to an environmental change. We suggest 'phenotypic noise' be used to distinguish non-genetic changes in phenotype that occur independently from the environment. We discuss the conceptual and methodological techniques used to identify these phenomena during cancer evolution. We propose that the distinction will guide efforts to define mechanisms of phenotype change, accelerate translational work to manipulate phenotypes through treatment, and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes. Purpose: When a pregnant woman is diagnosed with cancer, she faces complex and unique challenges while navigating both obstetric and oncological care. Despite often being the primary support for women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy (CDP), little is known about the experiences of their partners. We undertook an in-depth exploration of the experiences of partners of women diagnosed with CDP in Australia. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with partners of women diagnosed with CDP treated in Australia. Interviews explored partners’ inclusion in decision making and communication with health professionals and their own coping experiences. Data were analysed thematically. Results: Data from interviews with 12 male partners (N = 12) of women diagnosed with CDP were analysed. Two unique themes relevant to partners were identified: ‘Partners require support to adjust to changing roles and additional burdens’ and ‘Treating the couple as a team facilitates agency and coping, but partners’ needs are placed second by all’. Conclusion: Partners of women diagnosed with CDP commonly experience unique stressors and a substantial shift in previously established roles across multiple domains including medical advocacy, household coordination and parenting. Partners’ coping is interlinked with how the woman diagnosed with CDP is coping. Inclusion of partners in treatment decisions and communications, and considering partners’ wellbeing alongside that of the woman with CDP, is likely to be supportive for partners. Purpose: Family caregivers play a critical role in providing care for patients with cancer. However, the quality of their caregiving can be greatly impacted if the demands and expectations they experience are not identified. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the demands and perceived expectations of caregivers while caring for cancer patients. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted from June 2022 to September 2023. Face-to-face and in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the experiences of 19 Iranian family caregivers of patients with cancer. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants. The interviews were analyzed using conventional content analysis and the rigor of the study was ensured by employing Lincoln and Guba’s criteria. Results: Three main themes and six subthemes were identified through data analysis. The themes that emerged from the caregivers’ experiences included the following: (1) ambiguity in the healthcare system, (2) need for empathetic communication, and (3) forgotten caregivers in the healthcare system. Conclusion: Caregivers often feel overlooked, resulting in unfulfilled needs and expectations. It is imperative to explore potential solutions that provide caregivers information, empathetic communication, and support. Introduction: The views of patients and carers are important for the development of research priorities. This study aimed to determine and compare the top research priorities of cancer patients and carers with those of multidisciplinary clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed patients recovering from cancer surgery at a major tertiary hospital in Sydney, Australia, and/or their carers between March and July 2023. Consenting patients and carers were provided a list of research priorities according to clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation, as determined in a recent International Delphi study. Participants were asked to rate the importance of each research priority using a 5-item Likert scale (ranging from 1 = very high research priority to 5 = very low research priority). Results: A total of 101 patients and 50 carers participated in this study. Four areas were identified as research priorities, achieving consensus of highest importance (> 70% rated as “high” or “very high” priority) by patients, carers, and clinical experts. These were “optimal composition of prehabilitation programs” (77% vs. 82% vs. 88%), “effect of prehabilitation on surgical outcomes” (85% vs. 90% vs. 95%), “effect of prehabilitation on functional outcomes” (83% vs. 86% vs. 79%), and “effect of prehabilitation on patient reported outcomes” (78% vs. 84% vs. 79%). Priorities that did not reach consensus of high importance by patients despite reaching consensus of highest importance by experts included “identifying populations most likely to benefit from prehabilitation” (70% vs. 76% vs. 90%) and “defining prehabilitation core outcome measures” (66% vs. 74% vs. 87%). “Prehabilitation during neoadjuvant therapies” reached consensus of high importance by patients but not by experts or carers (81% vs. 68% vs. 69%). Conclusion: This study delineated the primary prehabilitation research priorities as determined by patients and carers, against those previously identified by clinicians with expertise in prehabilitation. To estimate the effect of platinum-based chemotherapy on live birth (LB) and infertility after cancer, in order to address a lack of treatment-specific fertility risks for female survivors of adolescent and young adult cancer, which limits counseling on fertility preservation decisions. Retrospective cohort study. US administrative database. We identified incident breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancer cases in females aged 15–39 years who received platinum-based chemotherapy or no chemotherapy and matched them to females without cancer. Platinum-based chemotherapy. We estimated the effect of chemotherapy on the incidence of LB and infertility after cancer, overall, and after accounting for competing events (recurrence, death, and sterilizing surgeries). There were 1,287 survivors in the chemotherapy group, 3,192 in the no chemotherapy group, and 34,147 women in the no cancer group, with a mean age of 33 years. Accounting for competing events, the overall 5-year LB incidence was lower in the chemotherapy group (3.9%) vs. the no chemotherapy group (6.4%). Adjusted relative risks vs. no chemotherapy and no cancer groups were 0.61 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42–0.82) and 0.70 (95% CI 0.51–0.93), respectively. The overall 5-year infertility incidence was similar in the chemotherapy group (21.8%) compared with the no chemotherapy group (20.7%). The adjusted relative risks vs. no chemotherapy and no cancer groups were 1.05 (95% CI 0.97–1.15) and 1.42 (95% CI 1.31–1.53), respectively. Cancer survivors treated with platinum-based chemotherapy experienced modestly increased adverse fertility outcomes. The estimated effects of platinum-based chemotherapy were affected by competing events, suggesting the importance of this analytic approach for interpretations that ultimately inform clinical fertility preservation decisions. Purpose: Myelosuppressive chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN) remains a major limitation of cancer treatment efficacy, necessitating very expensive supportive care. Lithium carbonate, an inexpensive drug, can increase the number of neutrophils, possibly providing an efficacious and cost-effective alternative for treating CIN. The aim of this study was to determine whether lithium therapy can attenuate chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and leukopenia in breast cancer patients. Methods: A total of 50 breast cancer patients were enrolled in this prospective, interventional, randomized, controlled, and single-blind study. The patients were divided into two groups: a control group (group 1, N = 25 patients) and a lithium-treated (treatment) group (group 2, N = 25 patients). Group 1 patients were further subclassified into a non-neutropenic control group (N = 16) and a neutropenic control (N = 9) based on the subsequent development of severe neutropenia, or not. The control group received 4 cycles of doxorubicin or epirubicin plus cyclophosphamide followed by 2 cycles of paclitaxel. The treatment group received the same regimen as the control group as well as oral lithium carbonate throughout the chemotherapy cycles. Results: The results showed that the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) was increased in the lithium-treated group, while it was markedly reduced in both the non-neutropenic and neutropenic control groups (by 55.56% and 65.42% post-4 chemotherapy cycles, and by 19.57% and 39.90% post-6 cycles, respectively). The same pattern of alterations was observed for the total white blood cell count in both the control and treatment groups. In addition, the incidence and period prevalence were greatly reduced in the lithium-treated group compared to non-neutropenic and neutropenic control groups. Conclusion: Lithium therapy ameliorated chemotherapy-induced leukopenia and neutropenia in breast cancer patients. Thyroid nodules are common clinical entities, with a significant proportion being malignant. Early, accurate, and non-invasive tools to differentiate benign and malignant nodules can optimize patient management and reduce unnecessary surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in distinguishing benign from malignant thyroid nodules. A diffuse reflectance spectrum for a total of 20 thyroid nodule samples (10 samples as colloid goiter and 10 samples as thyroid cancer), were acquired in the wavelength range from 1000 to 2500 nm. Spectral data from NIRS were analyzed by means of principal component analysis (PCA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to classify and differentiate thyroid nodule samples. The present study found that NIRS effectively distinguished colloid goiter and thyroid cancer using the first two principal components (PCs), explaining 90% and 10% of the variance, respectively. QDA discrimination plot displayed a clear separation between colloid goiter and thyroid cancer with minimal overlap, aligning with reported 95% accuracy. Additionally, applying LDA to seven PCs from PCA achieved a 100% accuracy rate in classifying colloid goiter and thyroid cancer from near-infrared spectral data. In conclusion, NIRS offers a promising, non-invasive complementing diagnostic tool for differentiating benign from malignant thyroid nodules with high accuracy. Future work should integrate these results into predictive model development, emphasizing external validation, alternative performance metrics, and protecting against potential overfitting translation of a machine learning model to a clinical setting. Background: Because health resources are limited, health programs should be compared to allow the most efficient ones to emerge. To that aim, health utility instruments have been developed to allow the calculation of quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). However, generic instruments, which can be used by any individual regardless of their health profile, typically consider the preferences of the general population when developing their value set. Consequently, they are often criticized for lacking sensitivity in certain domains, such as cancer. In response, the latest version of the Short Form 6-Dimension (SF-6Dv2) has been adapted to suit the preferences of patients with breast or colorectal cancer in the Canadian province of Quebec. By extension, our study's aim was to determine cancer population norms of utility among patients with breast or colorectal cancer in Quebec using the SF-6Dv2. Method: To determine the cancer population norms, we exploited the data that were used in the development of a new value set for the SF-6Dv2. This value set was developed considering the preferences of patients with breast or colorectal cancer. Stratification by time of data collection (i.e., T1 and T2), sociodemographic variables (i.e., age, sex, body mass index, and self-reported health problems affecting quality of life), and clinical aspects (i.e., cancer site, histopathological classification, cancer stage at diagnosis, modality, and treatment characteristics) was performed. Results: In 353 observations, patients were more likely to have negative utility scores at T1 than at T2. Males had higher mean utility scores than females considering type of cancer and comorbidities. Considering the SF-6Dv2's dimensions, more females than males reported having health issues, most which concerned physical functioning. Significant differences by sex surfaced for all dimensions except "Role Limitation" and "Mental health." Patients with multifocal cancer had the highest mean and median utility values in all cancer sites considered. Conclusion: Cancer population norms can serve as a baseline for interpreting the scores obtained by a given population in comparison to the situation of another group. In this way, our results can assist in comparing utility scores among cancer patients with different sociodemographic groups to other patients/populations groups. One of the significant causes of death globally is cancer (http://www.who.org/). Another critical problem is obesity, which is associated with an increased cancer threat. This work provides insight into how obesity contributes to cancer progression and metastasis. We developed a diffusive obesity-cancer model consisting of cancer cells, normal cells, fat cells, macrophages, and an extracellular matrix (ECM) for this aim. We have directed the formed model's global existence and non-negativity. Equilibrium points for the related ODE are calculated, and its existence and stability study is also done. We present a traveling wave analysis of the obesity-cancer model and have calculated the minimum wave speed. Using a combination of analytic and numerical results of traveling waves, we conjecture that the minimal wave speed depends on fat cells' diffusive rate and haptotaxis coefficient. We followed the theory of the Partial Rank Correlation Coefficient (PRCC) to carry out a global sensitivity analysis to evaluate the most sensitive parameters reliable for cancer progression. We delivered a comprehensive numerical analysis of our deterministic and diffusive models (in 1D and 2D) and analogized the result. Numerical simulation of corresponding spatially explicit systems conveys complex spatio-temporal dynamics, resulting in the appearance of patterns. It also discloses that cancer spread increases with increased haptotaxis coefficient and growth rate of obese cells. Objective: With rising rates of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use, the exploration of CAM integration into oncology treatments is becoming increasingly prevalent. Antioxidants have been proposed as potentially beneficial to prevent or treat cancer. However, evidence summaries are limited, and the United States Preventive Services Task Force has recently recommended the use of Vitamin C and E supplementation for cancer prevention. Thus, the objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the existing literature on the safety and efficacy of antioxidant supplementation in oncology patients. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, using prespecified search terms in PubMed and CINAHL. Two reviewers independently reviewed titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, with a third reviewer resolving conflicts, before the included articles underwent data extraction and quality appraisal. Results: Twenty-four articles met the inclusion criteria. Of the included studies, nine evaluated selenium, eight evaluated Vitamin C, four evaluated Vitamin E, and three of these studies included a combination of two or more of these agents. The most frequently evaluated cancer types included colorectal cancer (n = 4), leukemias (n = 4), breast cancer (n = 3), and genitourinary cancers (n = 3). Most of the studies focused on the antioxidants' therapeutic efficacy (n = 15) or their use in protecting against chemotherapy- or radiation-induced side effects (n = 8), and one study evaluated the role of an antioxidant in protection against cancer. Findings were generally favorable among the studies, and adverse effects of supplementation were limited. Furthermore, the average score for all the included articles on the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool was 4.2, indicating the high quality of the studies. Conclusions: Antioxidant supplements may provide benefits in reducing incidence or severity of treatment-induced side effects with limited risk for adverse effects. Large, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings among various cancer diagnoses and stages. Chronic, non-communicable diseases present a major barrier to living a long and healthy life. In many cases, early diagnosis can facilitate prevention, monitoring, and treatment efforts, improving patient outcomes. There is therefore a critical need to make screening techniques as accessible, unintimidating, and cost-effective as possible. The association between ocular biomarkers and systemic health and disease (oculomics) presents an attractive opportunity for detection of systemic diseases, as ophthalmic techniques are often relatively low-cost, fast, and non-invasive. In this review, we highlight the key associations between structural biomarkers in the eye and the four globally leading causes of morbidity and mortality: cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic disease. We observe that neurodegenerative disease is a particularly promising target for oculomics, with biomarkers detected in multiple ocular structures. Cardiovascular disease biomarkers are present in the choroid, retinal vasculature, and retinal nerve fiber layer, and metabolic disease biomarkers are present in the eyelid, tear fluid, lens, and retinal vasculature. In contrast, only the tear fluid emerged as a promising ocular target for the detection of cancer. The retina is a rich source of oculomics data, the analysis of which has been enhanced by artificial intelligence-based tools. Although not all biomarkers are disease-specific, limiting their current diagnostic utility, future oculomics research will likely benefit from combining data from various structures to improve specificity, as well as active design, development, and optimization of instruments that target specific disease signatures, thus facilitating differential diagnoses. Plain Language Summary: Long-term diseases can stop people living long and healthy lives. In many cases, early diagnosis can help to prevent, monitor, and treat disease, which can improve patients' health. In order to diagnose disease, we need tools that are easy for patients to access, painless, and low-cost. The eye may provide the solution. In this review, we discuss the link between changes in the eye and four types of long-term disease that, together, kill most of the population: (1) Cardiovascular disease (affecting the heart and/or blood). (2) Cancer (abnormal growth of cells). (3) Neurodegenerative disease (affecting the brain and/or nervous system). (4) Metabolic disease (problems storing, accessing, and using the body's fuel). We show that neurodegenerative disease leaves tell-tale signs in lots of different parts of the eye. Signs of cardiovascular and metabolic disease biomarkers are mostly found in the back of the eye, and signs of cancer can be found in the tear fluid. Although signs of disease can be seen in the eye, not all of them will tell us what the disease is. We believe that future research will help us to understand more about long-term disease and how to detect it if we combine information from different structures within the eye and develop new tools to target these specific structures. Dignity-related psychological distress can often be unidentified and untreated within palliative care services. The Patient Dignity Inventory (PDI) measures the factors associated with an individual's sense of dignity-related psychological distress. This study aimed to obtain staff members' perspectives on the feasibility of utilising the PDI in a palliative care service in Wales. Seven experienced staff members were recruited from a Welsh Cancer and Palliative Care service. A thematic analysis of data collected via semi-structured interviews revealed three key themes and nine associated subthemes. The first theme was 'Positive Outcomes and Uses', which included three subthemes: Supporting Staff in their Clinical Practice, Patient Empowerment and Flexibility of Use. The second theme was 'Staff Concerns' that had two subthemes: Causing Distress and Confidence in Existential Conversations. The third theme was 'Barriers and Considerations to Implementation', which included Cultural Considerations, Staff Support and Length of the Measure. The findings suggest that the PDI could be valuable to clinical staff in supporting the identification of dignity difficulties and/or distress among patients. It is widely acknowledged that patients with cancer commonly experience malnutrition, and some individuals may adopt specific dietary trends. This study investigated the prevalence of malnutrition and dietary trends among Algerian cancer outpatients undergoing chemotherapy. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted from January to October 2023 with 71 cancer outpatients undergoing chemotherapy. Malnutrition risk was evaluated using the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST). The questionnaire also collected the occurrence of nutrition impact symptoms, the avoidance of specific food groups, and the use of oral nutritional supplements and dietary supplements. Malnutrition risk was identified in 57.7% (41 cases) of participants. Nutrition impact symptoms were reported by 59.2% (42 cases) of patients. A total of 36 of the patients (50.7%) altered their eating habits by avoiding at least one food group. Among malnourished cancer outpatients, only five used oral nutritional supplements. Dietary supplements were used by 23.9% (27/71) of the patients after cancer diagnosis. Our findings underscore the necessity for a systematic malnutrition assessment in cancer patients. Purpose: This study aimed to validate the Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia Distress Scale (CADS) in a diverse English-speaking population and patients with endocrine treatment-induced alopecia (EIA). Objective: Chemotherapy and endocrine therapy commonly cause alopecia in breast cancer patients, leading to significant psychological and social challenges. The CADS was developed to assess the psychosocial impact of alopecia, but its generalizability beyond Korean patients requires further investigation. Methods: Data from the CHANCE study (NCT02530177), which focused on non-metastatic breast cancer, was used. The cohort included 256 patients, and CADS data were collected at baseline, 6 months after chemotherapy completion, or 12 months after initiating endocrine therapy. The CADS questionnaire comprised 17 items covering physical and emotional health, daily activities, and relationships. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, and responsiveness was measured by effect size. Results: The CADS exhibited good reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.91 for the overall score, indicating acceptable internal consistency in both chemotherapy (0.89) and endocrine therapy (0.86) groups. Longitudinal responsiveness was supported by an effect size of 0.49 between decreasing satisfaction with hair growth and increasing emotional distress. Cross-sectional validity was confirmed, with effect sizes of 0.91 and 0.92 for satisfaction with hair growth and emotional and activity domains, respectively. Conclusion: The CADS is a valid and responsive tool for assessing the psychosocial impact of chemotherapy-induced alopecia and endocrine treatment-induced alopecia in a diverse Western patient population. Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (hereafter "HCT") is a physically and psychologically difficult treatment for patients with hematological cancers. This study examined relationships among patients' reports of pre-transplant social isolation, social constraints, and psychological distress. Method: We used baseline data from a multisite randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of expressive helping writing to reduce physical and emotional symptoms in HCT patients. We collected data prior to randomization and before either allogenic or autologous HCT using validated scales to assess social constraints, social isolation, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. We analyzed data using bivariate analysis and multivariate linear regression. We also explored whether social isolation mediated the effect of social constraints on both of our outcomes: anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results: Among 259 adults recruited prior to transplant, 43.6% were women (mean age = 57.42 years, SD = 12.34 years). In multivariate analysis controlling for relevant covariates, both social isolation (β = 0.24, p < 0.001) and social constraints (β = 0.28, p < 0.001) were associated with anxiety. When both social constraints and social isolation were in the model, only greater social isolation (β = 0.79, p < 0.001) was associated with depressive symptoms. Social isolation fully mediated the association between social constraints and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: For patients awaiting either allogenic or autologous HCT, the negative association between social constraints and anxiety and depressive symptoms may be related, in part, to the mechanism of perceived social isolation. Cancer cells induce hypercoagulability in the tumoral microenvironment by expressing Tissue Factor (TF). We aimed to study the impact of the procoagulant signature of cancer cells on the quality and structure of fibrin network. We also studied the impact of fibrin clot shield (FCS) on the efficiency of anticancer agents and the migration of cancer cells. Pancreatic cancer cells BXPC3 and breast cancer cells MDA-MB231 and MCF7, were cultured in the presence of normal Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP), diluted 10 % in conditioning media. Their potential to induce thrombin generation and their fibrinolytic activity were assessed. The structure of fibrin network was analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Cancer cells' mobility with fibrin clot and their interactions with fibrin were observed. Cancer cells were treated with paclitaxel (PTX) or 4-hydroxy-tamoxifen (4OHTam) in the presence or absence of FCS. Cancer cells, in presence of PPP, induced fibrin network formation. High TF-expressing cancer cells (BXPC3 and MDA-MB23 cells), led to dense fibrin network with fine fibers. Low TF expressing cells MCF7 led to thick fibers. Exogenous TF enhanced the density of fibrin network formed by MCF7 cells. Cancer cells through their inherent profibrinolytic potential migrated within the fiber scaffold. The BXPC3 and MCF7 cells moved in clusters whereas the MDA-MB231 cells moved individually within the fibrin network. FCS decreased the efficiency of PTX and 4OHTam on the viability of cancer cells. The procoagulant signature of cancer cells is determinant for the quality and structure of fibrin network in the microenvironment. Platelets, anucleate blood cells derive from megakaryocytes, are involved in cardiovascular diseases and tumors. FcγRIIA, the only FcγR expressed on human platelets, is known for its role in immune-related diseases. A growing body of evidence reveals that platelet FcγRIIA is a potential target for the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease and cancer, and is an advantageous biomarker. The study aimed to explore experiences of encounters with health care professionals among patients receiving palliative cancer care in specialist palliative care inpatient units. A qualitative explorative study design was conducted in a specialist palliative care inpatient setting. Data collection was implemented using semi-structured individual interviews (20 palliative care cancer patients) and analysed with inductive content analysis. Palliative care patients experienced both meaningful and disrespectful encounters with healthcare professionals. The meaningful encounters encompassed authentic and supportive experiences, while the disrespectful encounters included indifferent and inadequate experiences. Caring for a patient receiving palliative care requires care beyond tending to a patient's physical needs. Patients should be encountered holistically and as equal human beings without highlighting their roles as patients. The healthcare professionals and the organisations should also acknowledge the importance of time and effort spent for encounters and conversations with the patients instead of concentrating resources mainly on physical care. Purpose: The study identified different patterns of symptom burden and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among patients with cancer and to explored the effects of sociodemographic, disease-related, and family resilience factors, which could provide reference for the development of personalized nursing measures. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted with 329 patients with cancer who were undergoing treatment. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to explore the patterns of symptom burden and PTG among patients with cancer, and multiple logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of different patterns. Results: Based on the fit indicators of LPA, a three-class pattern model of posttraumatic responses was shown to be optimal, including resisting, struggling, and growth groups. In the resisting group (34.34%), patients reported low symptom burden and low PTG; in the struggling group (19.15%), patients showed a high symptom burden and moderate PTG; in the growth group (46.51%), patients showed low symptom burden and high PTG. Moreover, patients with cancer with high levels of family resilience were more likely to fall into the struggling and growth groups. Specifically, those with lower scores in the optimistic attitude and higher scores in the family and social support dimension of family resilience were more likely to fall into the struggling group, whereas those with lower scores in the transcendence and spiritual belief dimensions of family resilience were more likely to fall into the resisting group. Additionally, patients with at least three children were more likely to fall into the struggling group. Conclusions: This study showed heterogeneity in symptom burden and PTG patterns among patients with cancer. Patients’ growth must include both psychological growth and the mitigated symptom burden. Purpose: According to meta-analytic data, the prognosis of a cancer patient post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is relatively similar to the general population. However, preselection of patients, the details of CPR, patient-specific characteristics, and post-CPR care are poorly described. The aim of this study is to identify prognostic factors in order to recognize cancer patient profiles more likely to benefit from CPR. Methods: This is a retrospective study on a series of patients with solid or hematological malignancies who received CPR between January 2010 and December 2020 in a cancer institute. Results: Sixty-eight patients were included. The ratio of solid to hematological malignancy was 44/24, of which 32 were metastatic solid tumors. Median age was 61 years. Hypoxemia (29%) was the primary factor for cardiac arrest, followed by septic shock (21%). ICU mortality and hospital mortality were 87% and 88% respectively. Younger age, the presence of hematological malignancy, or a metastatic solid tumor were poor predictors for in-hospital mortality. Similarly, cardiac arrest in the ICU, as the final consequence of a pathological process, and a resuscitation time of more than 10 min have a negative influence on prognosis. Conclusions: This study shows that CPR is a useful intervention in cancer patients, even in the elderly patient, especially in non-metastatic solid tumors where cardiac arrest is the consequence of an acute event and not a terminal process. Background: Cancer-related depression is a well-documented condition that significantly impacts long-term quality of life. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin essential for neurogenesis and neuronal plasticity, has been implicated in various neuropsychological disorders including depression associated with cancer. Cytokines, on the other hand, play a crucial role in regulating depression, potentially by influencing BDNF expression. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), a key immune regulator within the tumor microenvironment, has been found to elevate BDNF levels, establishing a link between peripheral immune responses and depression. The study aims to investigate the correlation of TGF-β and BDNF in cancer-related depression. Methods: This study involved a cohort of 153 gynecological patients, including 61 patients with gynecological cancer and 92 patients without cancer. Depression levels were assessed using the subscale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D), and TGF-β and BDNF plasma levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The study revealed elevated plasma TGF-β levels in patients with cancer (32.24 ± 22.93 ng/ml) compared to those without cancer (25.24 ± 19.72 ng/ml) (P = 0.046). Additionally, reduced levels of BDNF were observed in patients presenting depression symptoms (44.96 ± 41.06 pg/ml) compared to those without depression (133.5 ± 176.7 pg/ml) (P = 0.036). Importantly, a significant correlation between TGF-β and BDNF was found in patients without cancer but with depression (correlation coefficient = 0.893, **P < 0.01). Interestingly, cancer appeared to influence the association between TGF-β and BDNF in patients with depression, as evidenced by a significant difference in the correlation of TGF-β and BDNF between cancer and non-cancer groups (P = 0.041). Objectives: To describe patients’ and surrogate information seekers’ experiences talking to clinicians about online cancer information. To assess the impact of clinicians telling patients or surrogate seekers not to search for information online. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Sample: A total of 282 participants, including 185 individuals with cancer and 97 surrogate seekers. Methods: Individuals were recruited through a broad consent registry and completed a 20-min survey. Findings: Cancer patients and surrogate seekers did not differ significantly in their experiences talking with clinicians about online cancer information. Nearly all patients and surrogate seekers who were told by a clinician not to go online for cancer information did so anyway. Implications: Interventions for improving cancer information seeking and communication with clinicians should target both patients and surrogate seekers. Introduction: Since the first experimentally proven tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib was introduced in the clinical setting, TKIs have attracted widespread attention because of their remarkable therapeutic effects and improvement of survival rates. In the era of precision medicine, accurate disease phenotype prediction for heterogeneous diseases, such as cancer, is emerging due to advanced technologies that link genotypes and phenotypes. However, it is difficult to integrate different types of biological data because they are so varied. In this study, we focused on predicting the traits of a blood cancer called Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) by combining different kinds of biological data. We used a recently developed method called Omics Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to better classify cancer outcomes. The primary advantages of a GAN include its ability to create synthetic data that is nearly indistinguishable from real data, its high flexibility, and its wide range of applications, including multi-omics data analysis. In addition, the GAN was effective at combining two types of biological data. We created synthetic datasets for gene activity and DNA methylation. Our method was more accurate in predicting disease traits than using the original data alone. The experimental results provided evidence that the creation of synthetic data through interacting multi-omics data analysis using GANs improves the overall prediction quality. Furthermore, we identified the top-ranked significant genes through statistical methods and pinpointed potential candidate drug agents through in-silico studies. The proposed drugs, also supported by other independent studies, might play a crucial role in the treatment of AML cancer. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common condition, often requiring surgical correction. Computed tomography (CT) based navigation technologies, which rely on ionizing radiation, are increasingly being utilized for surgical treatment. Although this population is highly vulnerable to radiation, given their age and female predominance, there is little available information elucidating modeled iatrogenic cancer risk. To model lifetime cancer risk associated with the use of intraoperative CT-based navigation for surgical treatment of AIS. This retrospective cross-sectional study took place in a quaternary care academic pediatric hospital in the United States. Adolescents aged 10–18 who underwent posterior spinal fusion for a diagnosis of AIS between July 2014 and December 2019. Effective radiation dose and projected lifetime cancer risk associated with intraoperative doses of ionizing radiation. Clinical and radiographic parameters were abstracted, including total radiation dose during surgery from flat plate radiographs, fluoroscopy, and intraoperative CT scans. Multivariable regression analysis was used to assess differences in radiation exposure between patients treated with conventional radiography versus intraoperative navigation. Radiation exposure was translated into lifetime cancer risk using well-established algorithms. In total, 245 patients were included, 119 of whom were treated with navigation. The cohort was 82.9% female and 14.4 years of age. The median radiation exposure (in millisieverts, mSv) for fluoroscopy, radiography, and navigation was 0.05, 4.14, and 8.19 mSv, respectively. When accounting for clinical and radiographic differences, patients treated with intraoperative navigation received 8.18 mSv more radiation (95%CI: 7.22–9.15, p<.001). This increase in radiation projects to 0.90 iatrogenic malignancies per 1,000 patients (95%CI 0.79–1.01). Ours is the first work to define cancer risk in the setting of radiation exposure for navigated AIS surgery. We project that intraoperative navigation will generate approximately one iatrogenic malignancy for every 1,000 patients treated. Given that spine surgery for AIS is common and occurs in the context of a multitude of other radiation sources, these data highlight the need for radiation budgeting protocols and continued development of lower radiation dose technologies. Background: Amplification of HER2, a receptor tyrosine kinase and a breast cancer‐linked oncogene, is associated with aggressive disease. HER2 protein is localised mostly at the cell membrane, but a fraction translocates to mitochondria. Whether and how mitochondrial HER2 contributes to tumorigenicity is currently unknown. Methods: We enriched the mitochondrial (mt‐)HER2 fraction in breast cancer cells using an N‐terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence and analysed how this manipulation impacts bioenergetics and tumorigenic properties. The role of the tyrosine kinase activity of mt‐HER2 was assessed in wild type, kinase‐dead (K753M) and kinase‐enhanced (V659E) mtHER2 constructs. Results: We document that mt‐HER2 associates with the oxidative phosphorylation system, stimulates bioenergetics and promotes larger respiratory supercomplexes. mt‐HER2 enhances proliferation and invasiveness in vitro and tumour growth and metastatic potential in vivo, in a kinase activity‐dependent manner. On the other hand, constitutively active mt‐HER2 provokes excessive mitochondria ROS generation, sensitises to cell death, and restricts growth of primary tumours, suggesting that regulation of HER2 activity in mitochondria is required for the maximal pro‐tumorigenic effect. Purpose: Describe spirituality’s role in a sample of Hispanic adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Methods: This phenomenology-informed convergent parallel mixed-methods study aimed to explore participants’ lived experiences with hope during cancer treatments and cancer survivorship. A purposive sample of Hispanic AYAs who completed cancer treatments 2–5 years ago were virtually recruited for participation. Participants completed virtual semi-structured interviews about their experiences with hope during cancer treatments and cancer survivorship and prepared narratives about their experiences. Thematic analyses were iteratively performed across the data set to identify final themes. Results: Ten Hispanic AYA cancer survivors (mean age 30.2, SD = 4.5) years participated in this pilot study. Seven participants (70%) were female, and three participants (30%) were male. Six participants (60%) experienced non-hematologic malignancies, and four participants (40%) experienced hematologic malignancies. Eight (80%) participants’ language preference was Spanish, while two (20%) participants’ language preference was English. The theme spirituality and subthemes living by faith, god as a resource, and spiritual gratitude were identified as concepts participants linked to their conceptualization of hope during cancer treatment and survivorship. Conclusions: Hope and spirituality may be conceptually linked to coping behaviors among Hispanic AYA cancer survivors. Hope through faith may be a learned spiritual value in Hispanic AYAs and might play a role in their spiritual and cognitive development. Background: A pathological communication between the trachea and oesophagus – a tracheoesophageal fistula – may be congenital or acquired, benign or malignant, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach. Conservative attempts at closure of this abnormal connection are ineffective; the interposition of healthy vascular tissue offers the least chance of recurrence. Methods: Outcomes of an islanded fasciocutaneous internal mammary artery perforator flap applied for tracheoesophageal fistula management were assessed in four radiated patients with laryngeal carcinoma using retrospective records. Results: Four male patients, with an average age of 60.75 years, underwent tracheoesophageal fistula closure between September 2017 and February 2021. A left-sided second internal mammary artery perforator flap was used in all cases, with an average dimension of 10.5 × 4.5 cm. There were no complications of tracheoesophageal leak, flap issues or donor site morbidity on follow up. Conclusion: Recent advances in angiosomal territory mapping and microvascular dissection techniques, combined with an understanding of tracheoesophageal fistula pathology, have changed management perspectives in these difficult-to-treat patients. Purpose: The challenges of fertility loss owing to cancer treatment persist long after treatment. However, psychosocial care for fertility among cancer survivors who have completed cancer treatment is insufficient. This systematic review examined psychosocial experiences related to the potential loss of fertility and unsuccessful pregnancy after treatment in cancer survivors of reproductive age to identify psychosocial care needs. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the online databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Ichushi-Web between August and December 2022 to identify studies that addressed psychosocial experiences after fertility loss or failure to conceive among young cancer survivors. Study quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Results: Forty studies were included, revealing psychosocial experiences across five categories: subjective fear of (potential) fertility loss, impact on romantic relationships, alternative methods for family building, reliance on social support, and specialized care. Only one study addressed the psychosocial aspects after complete loss of fertility in young cancer survivors. Conclusions: The possibility and uncertainty of fertility loss led to stress and depression, loss of identity, decreased opportunities to meet a new partner, and damaged relationships established before diagnosis. Purpose: For children with advanced cancer and their families, communication about prognosis is critical. Unfortunately, data demonstrate that prognostic communication occurs infrequently and inconsistently across advancing illness. Prior to developing an intervention to improve prognostic communication, we aimed to (1) characterize parent and oncologist perspectives on “best” approaches for prognostic communication, and (2) explore similarities and differences between parent and oncologist perspectives. Methods: Children with poor-prognosis solid tumors, their parents, and oncologists were followed prospectively for 24 months or until death. Matched semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents and oncologists 0–7 days after medical encounters at timepoints of disease progression or relapse. Reflexive thematic analysis was conducted to describe parent and oncologist impressions of communication quality. Results: A total of 68 interviews were conducted following serial disease reevaluation encounters involving 13 parents and five oncologists. Nine main themes were identified as “best” approaches: (1) speaking with honesty and clarity, (2) leaving room for hope, (3) leaning into a long-standing relationship, (4) personalizing language, (5) empowering the patient and family, (6) collaborating with the multidisciplinary team, (7) providing anticipatory guidance, (8) setting the scene, and (9) creating a therapeutic space. Parents and oncologists generally agreed on themes related to helpful communication approaches, while parents more explicitly described communication pitfalls. Conclusion: Parents and oncologists described clear recommendations for helpful communication strategies and pitfalls to avoid during difficult prognostic disclosure. Background: Nursing interventions in the post‐operative time period including psychological and emotional support, adverse event education, and instructions for follow‐up care contribute patient satisfaction, safety, and quality of life. However, the time spent in the post‐anesthesia care unit (PACU) and hospital continues to shorten around the world to reduce health care spending and improve patient outcomes. Nurses conducting research during the important post‐operative recovery period need to utilize unique techniques and emerging technologies to contact, recruit and collect data outside of the hospital setting including the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) platform. Aims: This paper describes the feasibility and acceptability, facilitators and barriers of the software application, REDCap, to complete a repeated‐measures, descriptive correlational study in patients undergoing outpatient breast cancer surgeries. Methods & Materials: The recruitment, data collection and storage were completed utilizing the secure REDCap Platform. The Institutional Research Board (IRB)‐approved study was a repeated‐measures, descriptive, correlational study with data collection at three time points. The data points aligned with important transitions and routine visits to improve data collection feasibility and increase relevance to clinical practice. Results: The sample consisted of women diagnosed with breast cancer undergoing breast conserving surgery between August 15 and October 15, 2020. There were 123 potential participants, of which 76 started the surveys and 75 participated (61%) responded and participated in the study on Post‐operative Day 1. Fifty‐nine participants (78%) completed the surveys on post‐operative Day 14. Discussion: As the frequency of outpatient treatment increases, nurses conducting post‐operative research will need to collect the data outside of the hospital setting. Conclusion: Email provides a method of studying new phenomena by recruiting participants, providing information about the study, and collecting results in a non‐traditional setting. Despite an initial strong response in most dogs with multicentric lymphoma treated with chemotherapy, relapse remains common. There is no clearly superior first rescue protocol described either for resistant or relapsed canine multicentric lymphoma. The objectives of this study were to assess clinical response and outcomes for canine multicentric lymphoma treated with first rescue protocols. The secondary objective was to assess prognostic variables for dogs undergoing these protocols. This was a bi‐institutional retrospective cohort study. Two hundred and sixty‐five dogs were treated with first rescue chemotherapy, including anthracycline‐based combination chemotherapy (CHOP‐like, n = 50), nitrosourea alkylating agent‐rich chemotherapy (n = 45), anthracycline‐based or related compound chemotherapy (n = 34), or nitrosourea single‐agent chemotherapy (n = 136). The overall median progression free survival time of first rescue protocol was 56.0 days (0–455 days). Important prognostic factors identified for first rescue protocol included the attainment of a complete response to the first rescue chemotherapy (p <.001), the use of a CHOP‐like first rescue protocol (p =.009), duration of first remission (HR 0.997, p =.028), and if prednisolone was included in the first rescue protocol (HR 0.41, p =.003). Adverse events (AE) were common, with 81.1% of dogs experiencing at least one AE during first rescue chemotherapy. Kinase is an enzyme that helps in the phosphorylation of the targeted molecules and can affect their ability to react with other molecules. So, kinase influences metabolic reactions like cell signaling, secretory processes, transport of molecules, etc. The increased activity of certain kinases may cause various types of cancer, i.e. leukemia, glioblastoma, and neuroblastomas. So, the growth of particular cancer cells can be prevented by the inhibition of the kinase responsible for those cancers. Natural products are the key resources for the development of new drugs where approximately 60% of anti-tumor drugs are being developed with the same including specific kinase dwellers. This study comprised molecular interactions of various molecules (obtained from natural sources) as kinase inhibitors for the treatment of cancer. In 2015, the oncolytic herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV‐1) T‐VEC (talimogene laherparepvec) was approved for intratumoral injection in non‐resectable malignant melanoma. To determine whether viral replication is required for oncolytic activity, we compared replication‐deficient HSV‐1 d106S with replication‐competent T‐VEC. High infectious doses of HSV‐1 d106S killed melanoma (n = 10), head‐and‐neck squamous cell carcinoma (n = 11), and chondrosarcoma cell lines (n = 2) significantly faster than T‐VEC as measured by MTT metabolic activity, while low doses of T‐VEC were more effective over time. HSV‐1 d106S and, to a lesser extent T‐VEC, triggered caspase‐dependent early apoptosis as shown by pan‐caspase inhibition and specific induction of caspases 3/7, 8, and 9. HSV‐1 d106S induced a higher ratio of apoptosis‐inducing infected cell protein (ICP) 0 to apoptosis‐blocking ICP6 than T‐VEC. T‐VEC was oncolytic for an extended period of time as viral replication continued, which could be partially blocked by the antiviral drug aciclovir. High doses of T‐VEC, but not HSV‐1 d106S, increased interferon‐β mRNA as part of the intrinsic immune response. When markers of immunogenic cell death were assessed, ATP was released more efficiently in the context of T‐VEC than HSV‐1 d106S infection, whereas HMGB1 was induced comparatively well. Overall, the early oncolytic effect on three different tumour entities was stronger with the non‐replicative strain, while the replication‐competent virus elicited a stronger innate immune response and more pronounced immunogenic cell death. Purpose: Breast cancer survivors following disease-modifying treatment frequently experience multiple-concurrent symptoms (Jansana et al. in Int J Cancer 149(10):1755 1767, 2021), negatively impacting their quality of life and increasing the risk of polypharmacy (Alwhaibi et al. in J Oncol Pharm Pract 26(5):1052 1059, 2020). This study evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of acupuncture for the management of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster in breast cancer survivors, and investigates relationships between the symptom cluster and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome diagnosis. Methods: This was a single-arm, pre-test/post-test feasibility trial conducted at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Hospital, Australia. Breast cancer survivors who completed treatment and experienced clinically significant levels of two or more symptoms (pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, numbness/tingling) were eligible to participate in the individualized, pragmatic 6-week acupuncture intervention. The primary outcome was feasibility and acceptability. Effectiveness was explored using a symptom cluster mean score. Results: Twenty women enrolled in the study over an 11-week period and 90% completed the study. Most women agreed or completely agreed that acupuncture was feasible (85%), acceptable (90%), and appropriate (90%). Both mean and composite symptom cluster scores were significantly reduced (p < 0.001), as were individual symptom scores in fatigue (p < 0.001), sleep disturbance (p = 0.04), and numbness/tingling (p = 0.01). TCM syndromes most closely associated with this symptom cluster were Spleen qi deficiency and Heart fire. No adverse events were reported. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that acupuncture was safe and feasible, justifying a powered randomized control trial. Preliminary findings suggest beneficial effects of acupuncture for the management of the pain-fatigue-sleep disturbance-numbness/tingling symptom cluster for women with breast cancer. TCM syndromes identified in this trial may be used to guide acupuncture treatment protocols. Loneliness may exacerbate poor health outcomes particularly among cancer survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little is known about the risk factors of loneliness among cancer survivors. We evaluated the risk factors of loneliness in the context of COVID-19 pandemic-related prevention behaviors and lifestyle/psychosocial factors among cancer survivors. Cancer survivors (n = 1471) seen at Huntsman Cancer Institute completed a survey between August–September 2020 evaluating health behaviors, medical care, and psychosocial factors including loneliness during COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were classified into two groups: 'lonely' (sometimes, usually, or always felt lonely in past month) and 'non-lonely' (never or rarely felt lonely in past month). 33% of cancer survivors reported feeling lonely in the past month. Multivariable logistic regression showed female sex, not living with a spouse/partner, poor health status, COVID-19 pandemic-associated lifestyle factors including increased alcohol consumption and marijuana/CBD oil use, and psychosocial stressors such as disruptions in daily life, less social interaction, and higher perceived stress and financial stress were associated with feeling lonely as compared to being non-lonely (all p < 0.05). A significant proportion of participants reported loneliness, which is a serious health risk among vulnerable populations, particularly cancer survivors. Modifiable risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and psychosocial stress were associated with loneliness. These results highlight the need to screen for unhealthy lifestyle factors and psychosocial stressors to identify cancer survivors at increased risk of loneliness and to develop effective management strategies. Increasing evidence has indicated that high tissue stiffness (TS) may be a potential biomarker for evaluation of tumor aggressiveness. To investigate the value of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE)-based quantitative parameters preoperatively predicting the tumor grade and subtype of cervical cancer (CC). Retrospective. Twenty-five histopathology-proven CC patients and 7 healthy participants. 3.0T, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (LAVA-flex) and MRE with a three-dimensional spin-echo echo-planar imaging. The regions of interest (ROIs) were manually drawn by two observers in tumors to measure mean TS, storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G″) and damping ratio (DR) values. Surgical specimens were evaluated for tumor grades and subtypes. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was expressed in terms of inter-observer agreements. t- test or Mann-Whitney nonparametric test was used to compare the complex modulus and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values between different tumor groups. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance. The TS of endocervical adenocarcinoma (ECA) group was significantly higher than that in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) group (5.27 kPa vs. 3.44 kPa, P = 0.042). The TS also showed significant difference between poorly and well/moderately differentiated CC (5.21 kPa vs. 3.47 kPa, P = 0.038), CC patients and healthy participants (4.18 kPa vs. 1.99 kPa, P < 0.001). The cutoff value of TS to discriminate ECA from SCC was 4.10 kPa (AUC: 0.80), while it was 4.42 kPa to discriminate poorly from well/moderately differentiated CC (AUC: 0.83), and 2.25 kPa to distinguish normal cervix from CC (AUC: 0.88), respectively. There were no significant difference in G″, DR and ADC values between any subgroups except for comparison of healthy participants and CC patients (P = 0.001, P = 0.004, P < 0.001, respectively). 3D MRE-assessed TS shows promise as a potential biomarker to preoperatively assess tumor grade and subtype of CC. Evodiamine is a bioactive alkaloid extracted from the Evodia rutaecarpa plant. It has various pharmacological effects including anti‐cancer, anti‐bacterial, anti‐obesity, anti‐neurodegenerative, anti‐depressant, and cardiac protective properties. Evodiamine demonstrates potent anti‐cancer activity by inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Despite the health‐promoting properties of evodiamine, its clinical use is hindered by low water solubility, poor bioavailability, and toxicity. Thus, there is a need to develop alternative drug delivery systems for evodiamine to enhance its solubility, permeability, and stability, as well as to facilitate targeted, prolonged, and controlled drug release. Nanocarriers can increase the therapeutic potential of evodiamine in cancer therapy while reducing adverse side effects. To date, numerous attempts have been made through the development of smart nanocarriers to overcome the drawbacks of evodiamine. This review focuses on the pharmacological applications, anti‐cancer mechanisms, and limitations of evodiamine. Various nanocarriers, including lipid‐based nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, cyclodextrins, and so forth, have been discussed extensively for evodiamine delivery. Nano‐drug delivery systems could increase the solubility, bioavailability, stability, and therapeutic efficacy of evodiamine. AbstractObjective: The occurrence of bacteremia is critically important for the survival of cancer patients. Therefore, our study aims to evaluate the efficacy of procalcitonin (PCT) and the procalcitonin to albumin ratio (PAR) in predicting bacteremia among this population.Methods: In this retrospective test-negative case-control study, we included 903 hospitalized cancer patients, divided into two groups: the bacteremia-positive group (BSI group, n = 384) and the bacteremia-negative group (non-BSI group, n = 519). We assessed the diagnostic significance of PCT and PAR through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and determined the optimal cut-off values using Youden's index.Results: Both the duration of hospital stay and the 30-day mortality rate were significantly higher in the BSI group. The areas under the curve (AUC) for PAR and PCT were 0.749 (95% CI: 0.715-0.782) and 0.742 (95% CI: 0.708-0.776), respectively, indicating higher levels in the BSI group. The optimal cut-off values for predicting bacteremia were 0.72 for PAR and 1.32 for PCT. PAR showed the highest specificity (92.7%) and positive predictive value (PPV = 83.4%), while PCT demonstrated the highest sensitivity (51.3%) and negative predictive value (NPV = 71.6%).Discussion: This study is the first in the literature to suggest that PAR and PCT are valuable biomarkers for diagnosing bacteremia in cancer patients. Elevated oxidative stress, which threatens genome stability, has been detected in almost all types of cancers. Cells employ various DNA repair pathways to cope with DNA damage induced by oxidative stress. Recently, a lot of studies have provided insights into DNA damage response upon oxidative stress, specifically in the context of transcriptionally active genomes. Here, we summarize recent studies to help understand how the transcription is regulated upon DNA double strand breaks (DSB) and how DNA repair pathways are selectively activated at the damage sites coupling with transcription. The role of RNA molecules, especially R‐loops and RNA modifications during the DNA repair process, is critical for protecting genome stability. Evobrutinib is a second‐generation, highly selective, irreversible Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor that has shown efficacy in the autoimmune diseases arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Its development as a positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer has potential for in vivo imaging of BTK in various disease models including several cancers, severe acute respiratory syndrome‐coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced lung damage. Herein, we report the automated radiosynthesis of [11C]evobrutinib using a base‐aided palladium‐NiXantphos‐mediated 11C‐carbonylation reaction. [11C]Evobrutinib was reliably formulated in radiochemical yields of 5.5 ± 1.5% and a molar activity of 34.5 ± 17.3 GBq/μmol (n = 12) with 99% radiochemical purity. Ex vivo autoradiography studies showed high specific binding of [11C]evobrutinib in HT‐29 colorectal cancer mouse xenograft tissues (51.1 ± 7.1%). However, in vivo PET/computed tomography (CT) imaging with [11C]evobrutinib showed minimal visualization of HT‐29 colorectal cancer xenografts and only a slight increase in radioactivity accumulation in the associated time‐activity curves. In preliminary PET/CT studies, [11C]evobrutinib failed to visualize either SARS‐CoV‐2 pseudovirus infection or LPS‐induced injury in mouse models. In conclusion, [11C]evobrutinib was successfully synthesized by 11C‐carbonylation and based on our preliminary studies does not appear to be a promising BTK‐targeted PET radiotracer in the rodent disease models studied herein. Background: Cancer patients experience significant changes in their social roles along with various physical and psychological challenges. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of palliative care in Bangladesh, there is a notable gap in research focusing on the psychosocial issues faced by patients with advanced cancer. Aim: This study aims to explore the level of social support perceived by Bangladeshi cancer patients and determine how this support relates to their mental health status. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 advanced cancer (stages III and IV) patients admitted to the palliative medicine department of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Perceived social support was measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the mental health status of the patients was assessed by Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21. Data collection was done from June to November 2023. Relationships between perceived social support, depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed by the Spearman correlation test. The moderating effect of perceived social support on patients' mental health variables was determined by multiple linear regression and simple slope analysis. p Value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Result: The study included an almost equal number of male (49.6%) and female (50.4%) patients, with a mean age of 50.7 ± 14.4 years. Overall, perceived social support was moderate to high for most (74.7%) of the participants. Among the participants, 78.3% experienced anxiety, 77.4% suffered from depression, and 70.5% experienced stress. Depression, anxiety, and stress were all negatively and significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with perceived social support. Younger patients reported higher levels of anxiety, stress, and depression. Perceived social support had a significant buffering effect on depression and anxiety among the younger patients. Conclusion: Perceived social support has a profound and significant effect on the mental health of advanced cancer patients. Integrating psychosocial support early in palliative care can be highly beneficial to the mental health of these patients. Background: Individuals with diabetes have a significantly higher risk of developing various forms of cancer, and the potential biological links between these two diseases are not completely understood. Methods: This was a longitudinal retrospective nationwide cohort study, a study design that allows us to examine the natural course of cancer development over an extended period of time with a large sample size. Initially, 3,111,975 and 22,208,395 eligible patients aged ≥ 20 years with and without diabetes, respectively, were matched by age, sex, and the Charlson comorbidity index. Ultimately, 1,751,457 patients were selected from each group. Stratified populations for diabetic retinopathy (DR) (n = 380,822) and without DR (n = 380,822) as well as proliferative DR (PDR) (n = 141,150) and non-proliferative DR (NPDR) (n = 141,150) were analyzed in this study. The main outcome measure was the first-time diagnosis of cancer during the follow-up period. Results: We observed a 20% higher risk of total cancer incidence [hazard ratios (HR), 1.20; p < 0.001] in the diabetes cohort compared to the non-diabetes cohort. The highest HR was observed for liver and pancreas cancers. Moderately increased risks were observed for oral, colon, gallbladder, reproductive (female), kidney, and brain cancer. Furthermore, there was a borderline significantly increased risk of stomach, skin, soft tissue, female breast, and urinary tract (except kidney) cancers and lymphatic and hematopoietic malignancies. The stratified analysis revealed that the total cancer incidence was significantly higher in the DR cohort compared to the non-DR cohort (HR, 1.31; p < 0.001), and there was a borderline increased risk in the PDR cohort compared to the NPDR cohort (HR, 1.13; p = 0.001). Conclusions: This study provides large-scale, nationwide, population-based evidence that diabetes is independently associated with an increased risk of subsequent development of total cancer and cancer at specific sites. Background: Healthy lifestyles are inversely associated with the risk of noncommunicable diseases, which are leading causes of death. However, few studies have used longitudinal data to assess the impact of changing lifestyle behaviours on all-cause and cancer mortality. Methods: Within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort, lifestyle profiles of 308,497 cancer-free adults (71% female) aged 35–70 years at recruitment across nine countries were assessed with baseline and follow-up questionnaires administered on average of 7 years apart. A healthy lifestyle index (HLI), assessed at two time points, combined information on smoking status, alcohol intake, body mass index, and physical activity, and ranged from 0 to 16 units. A change score was calculated as the difference between HLI at baseline and follow-up. Associations between HLI change and all-cause and cancer mortality were modelled with Cox regression, and the impact of changing HLI on accelerating mortality rate was estimated by rate advancement periods (RAP, in years). Results: After the follow-up questionnaire, participants were followed for an average of 9.9 years, with 21,696 deaths (8407 cancer deaths) documented. Compared to participants whose HLIs remained stable (within one unit), improving HLI by more than one unit was inversely associated with all-cause and cancer mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.81, 0.88; and HR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.82, 0.92; respectively), while worsening HLI by more than one unit was associated with an increase in mortality (all-cause mortality HR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.33; cancer mortality HR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.29). Participants who worsened HLI by more than one advanced their risk of death by 1.62 (1.44, 1.96) years, while participants who improved HLI by the same amount delayed their risk of death by 1.19 (0.65, 2.32) years, compared to those with stable HLI. Conclusions: Making healthier lifestyle changes during adulthood was inversely associated with all-cause and cancer mortality and delayed risk of death. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer and the second cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. Despite the infrastructure and the availability of organized screening programs, participation in their screening programs is less than the set goals. Considering the importance of informing the society about the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer symptoms and the positive impact of mobile health technologies, the present research was conducted with the aim of designing and evaluating a colon cancer mobile application. Methods: The present research was conducted in two phases: software design and evaluation. In the first phase, the software was prepared using the cascade method. First, all the educational content related to colorectal cancer was collected through an expert panel with the participation of 10 specialists. Then the software was evaluated with alpha and beta testing, and the initial version was approved by users in terms of simplicity and usability. In the second phase, a parallel clinical randomized trial study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of a colon cancer mobile application on the early detection of colorectal cancer. In this stage, 204 volunteers participated; inclusion criteria were age 18–85 years, owning a smartphone and the ability to read and write. Participants were randomized into control and intervention groups. The intervention group was educated with the colon cancer application for education about colorectal cancer, and the control group was educated with a pamphlet. After education, both groups were screened for colorectal cancer symptoms, and the results were compared. Results: In the software evaluation phase, the application was used by 204 users. In this stage, 84 (41.2%) women and 120 (58.8%) men, with an average (Standard Deviation) age of 47.53 (13.68) participated. Participants were randomized in two groups, 103 people with an average (Standard Deviation) age of 47.62 (14.65) in intervention group and 101 people with an average (Standard Deviation) age of 47.44 (12.70) in control group. There were no significant differences between the demographic characteristics of age, gender, marriage, occupation, instruction level, digestive disease history, cancer history, cancer risk factors, and family history of cancer between the two groups (P > 0.05). The Mann-Whitney U test indicated that there is a significant difference between the two groups of participants in self-assessment, willingness to do the screening, and the results of the assessment of colorectal cancer (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the research indicated the positive impact of the Colon Cancer Application on the abilities of the users of self-assessment of colon cancer. Therefore, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of the colon cancer mobile application is effective for colon cancer prevention and self-care.
