Multiple drivers are threatening the functioning of the microbial food webs and trophic interactions. Our understanding about how temperature, CO 2 , nutrient inputs, and solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) availability interact to alter ecosystem functioning is scarce because research has focused on single and double interactions. Moreover, the role that the degree of in situ nutrient limitation could play in the outcome of these interactions has been largely neglected, despite it is predominant in marine ecosystems. We address these uncertainties by combining remote-sensing analyses, and a collapsed experimental design with natural microbial communities from Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean exposed to temperature, nutrients, CO 2 , and UVR interactions. At the decade scale, we found that more intense and frequent (and longer lasting) Saharan dust inputs (and marine heatwaves) were only coupled with reduced phytoplankton biomass production. When microbial communities were concurrently exposed to future temperature, CO 2 , nutrient, and UVR conditions (i.e. the drivers studied over long-term scales), we found shifts from net autotrophy [primary production:respiration (PP:R) ratio > 1] towards a metabolic equilibrium (PP:R ratio ~ 1) or even a net heterotrophy (PP:R ratio < 1), as P-limitation degree was higher (i.e. Atlantic Ocean). These changes in the metabolic balance were coupled with a weakened phytoplankton-bacteria interaction (i.e. bacterial carbon demand exceeded phytoplankton carbon supply. Our work reveals that an accentuated in situ P limitation may promote reductions both in carbon uptake and fluxes between trophic levels in microbial plankton communities under global-change conditions. We show that considering long-term series can aid in identifying major local environmental drivers (i.e. temperature and nutrients in our case), easing the design of future global-change studies, but also that the abiotic environment to which microbial plankton communities are acclimated should be taken into account to avoid biased predictions concerning the effects of multiple interacting global-change drivers on marine ecosystems., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Introduction: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common human diseases worldwide, and metastases are detected in approximately 20% of patients at diagnosis. Brain metastases occur in only 4% of cases, however, and usually present with hemiparesis or other motor or sensory symptoms. There have been only a few reports of parkinsonism secondary to a brain tumor-related mass effect., Case Presentation: We present an unusual case of parkinsonism secondary to multiple brain metastases. A 57-year-old Caucasian man had recently been diagnosed with primary carcinoma of the colon and had multiple metastases in the lungs and liver. He subsequently developed bilateral symmetrical parkinsonism, and multiple brain tumors were detected by computed tomography scanning. The condition of our patient deteriorated rapidly, and he became akinetic and dependent for all activities of daily living. He was followed up and treated at home by our palliative care unit team and died two weeks after the onset of his neurologic symptoms., Conclusion: Although primary and secondary brain tumors are uncommon causes of parkinsonism, their clinical presentation may resemble that of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. An awareness of this rare differential diagnosis is therefore important in ensuring early diagnosis and treatment, thus improving prognosis and quality of life. A rapid progression in neurologic symptoms was observed in our patient, and clinicians should be alert to this atypical presentation of secondary parkinsonism.

The present work aims to use a biofilter technology (aerated submerged filters) for the aerobic transformation at laboratory-scale of olive washing water (OWW) generated in the first steps of olive oil processing, as well as the genetic profiling and identification to the species level of the bacteria involved in the formation of the biofilm, by means of TGGE. Chemical parameters, such as biological oxygen demand at five days (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), decreased markedly (up to 90 and 85%, respectively) by the biological treatment, and the efficiency of the process was significantly affected by aeration and inlet flow rates. The total polyphenol content of inlet OWW was only moderately reduced (around 50% decrease of the inlet content) after the biofilter treatment, under the conditions tested. Partial 16S rRNA genes were amplified using total DNA extracted from the biofilm and separated by TGGE. Sequences of isolated bands were mostly affiliated to the alpha-subclass of Proteobacteria, and often branched in the periphery of bacterial genera commonly present in soil (Rhizobium, Reichenowia, Agrobacterium, and Sphingomonas). The data obtained by the experimentation at laboratory scale provided results that support the suitability of the submerged filter technology for the treatment of olive washing waters with the purpose of its reutilization.

The wound-healing response is critical to the outcome of refractive surgery and studying wound healing contributes to an understanding of the pathophysiology of other corneal injuries. Animal models allow research to be conducted with sufficient samples and under controlled parameters. We studied the hen to determine the healing process from clinical, biophysical, and biological standpoints after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). PRK (-6.0 diopters) was performed in hen eyes. At 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h and 5, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days postoperatively, we studied the clinical follow-up, objective measurements of light transmission (direct transmittance), apoptosis by TUNEL assay, proliferation by immunocytochemical analysis of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine, and expression of alpha smooth muscle actin (SMA) in myofibroblasts in the corneas. Hen corneas reepithelialize quickly. Haze developed from 5 to 60 days after surgery and was correlated with the appearance and finalization of the expression of SMA. The direct transmittance of light was low during the first 15 days and improved at 30 and 60 days. TUNEL-positive cells were observed 3 h after surgery and the numbers decreased thereafter. Epithelial proliferation began at 12 h and was greater at 48 h, while stromal cell proliferation began at 24 h and was greater at 72 h. The hen cornea is anatomically similar to the human cornea, and the manner in which it heals is a good model for studying different surgical techniques and pharmacologic assays.

Degenerative aortic valve stenosis includes a range of disorder severity from mild leaflet thickening without valve obstruction, "aortic sclerosis", to severe calcified aortic stenosis. It is a slowly progressive active process of valve modification similar to atherosclerosis for cardiovascular risk factors, lipoprotein deposition, chronic inflammation, and calcification. Systemic signs of inflammation, as wall and serum C-reactive protein, similar to those found in atherosclerosis, are present in patients with degenerative aortic valve stenosis and may be expression of a common disease, useful in monitoring of stenosis progression.

Fifteen bacterial strains isolated from solid waste oil samples were selected due to their capacity of growing in the presence of hydrocarbons. The isolates were identified by PCR of the 16S rDNA gene using fD1 and rD1 primers. The majority of the strains belonged to genera Bacillus, Bacillus pumilus (eight strains) and Bacillus subtilis (two strains). Besides, three strains were identified as Micrococcus luteus, one as Alcaligenes faecalis and one strain as Enterobacter sp. Growth of the above-mentioned strains in mineral liquid media amended with naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene or pyrene as sole carbon source was studied and our results showed that these strains can tolerate and remove different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that may be toxic in the environment polluted with hydrocarbons. Finally, the capacity of certain strains to emulsify octane, xilene, toluene, mineral oil and crude oil, and its ability to remove hydrocarbons, look promising for its application in bioremediation technologies.

We performed a study to evaluate the variability and adequacy of prescribing antibiotics in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in 10 Spanish hospitals. We studied 452 patients with CAP. Initial empirical administration of antibiotics was prescribed in 90.7&#37; of the cases, 82.5&#37; as monotherapy. Macrolides and third and second generation cephalosporins were the most widely used groups of antibiotics. Penicillin and amoxicillin were only prescribed in 1. 7&#37; of the patients. A significant variability between hospitals was observed. Reference patterns for the use of antibiotics in CAP were devised by a panel of experts. According to the recommendations of this panel, 29&#37; of the total prescriptions were not adequate, with this percentage reaching 65&#37; in outpatients older than 65 years or with comorbidity. This was mainly due to the fact that monotherapy with erythromycin, which was considered inadequate, was the most widely prescribed treatment.

Situation and main characteristics of the AIDS epidemics in Romania are analysed. Prevention measures, among which it is worth mentioning a correct information of the population, are proposed.

The record of SSPE cases diagnosed immunochemically and serologically in our laboratory, standing for about 60% of the total new cases reported in our country, shows a significant decrease in the incidence in 1988-89 (from 5.21 new cases per year per million total population in 1987 to 1.82 cases in 1988). In 85% of the patients, SSPE onset occurred at the age of 10 years or more, suggesting the possibility of a primary measles infection before anti-measles immunization became compulsory. High serum and CSF anti-measles antibody titres in recently diagnosed patients show subclinical long-term courses. Further serologic tests for viruses inducing persistent infections (herpes viruses, AgHBs and HIV) do not show any difference when compared to a control group excepting an increased incidence of anti-cytomegalic titres.

The presence of HBsAg and anti-HBs was tested in 2,099 surgery patients and in the blood left in 3,157 flasks after transfusion. It was found that accidental transfusion of HBsAg-containing blood had occurred. The 30 patients in which seropositivity correlations between recipients and transfused blood could be established were followed up clinically and serologically at 3, 6 and 12 months after transfusion. Out of the 13 initially seropositive patients 5 showed clinical or subclinical symptoms of viral hepatitis (V.H.). Most of the recipients of HBsAg-containing blood developed a biological response consisting in the appearance of either V.H. or anti-HBs. An increased number of fatal cases was recorded among recipients of anti-HBs-containing blood within 1 to 16 days post transfusion.

Investigations were performed as regards the effect of the in vitro contact of influenza virus A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) with different milk preparations: boiled milk, milk acidified with lactic acid, supernatant from boiled yoghourt. It was the latter preparation that had the highest efficacy as regards the reduction of hemagglutinating (HA) titer following direct in vitro contact and the course of experimental influenza infection in mice. In the case of animals inoculated with influenza virus exposed to yoghourt supernatant HA titers in the lung homogenates were lower, mortality rates were reduced and the mean survival time was longer than in controls infected with untreated virus. Considerations are made on the possible mechanisms of the antiinfluenza action of yoghourt supernatant.

The NIVGRIP inactivated influenza vaccine prepared in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology has proved its efficacy in the specific prophylaxis of influenza. The vaccine can be administered by nasal and/or oral route and has a very low reactogenicity. Application of the NIVGRIP vaccine results in seroconversion rates of 50-70% and in rises in the levels of local neutralizing antibodies in 75-80% of the vaccines. Numerous epidemiological surveys have ascertained that the protection rate obtained by nasal administration of the NIVGRIP vaccine ranges from 50 to 90%, being comparable with that of other commercially available vaccines. The advantages of the use of an inactivated, whole virus vaccine applicable by nonparenteral routes are discussed.

The biological characteristics of a measles virus strain (Co-69/pi) isolated from a selected chronically infected calf kidney cell line (K-2) are studied in comparison with those of thw wild parental CO-69 and of the attenuated Schwarz measles virus strain. Co-69/pi is a variant of the parental Co-69 virus and has characteristics of an attenuated strain. Some of the characteristics acquired by the Co-69/pi strain (cytopathogenicity, size of plaques) proved to be stable in the course of passages on a simian substrate. The mechanism having led to the appearance of this variant in the chronically infected cell line are discussed.

Inoculation of ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated adenovirus type 4 (Ad4) led to in vitro transformation of human diploid cells (HDC). Two transformed cell lines could be established: cell line H 1418, from HDC inoculated with the 10(-3) dilution of Ad4 UV-irradiated for 20 min at a distance of 20 cm, co-cultivated with uninfected HDC, and cell line H 1557, from HDC inoculated with the 10(-2) dilution of Ad4 irradiated at the same distance for 12 min. Both transformed cell lines were resistant to superinfection with homologous virus. Virus-specific antigen could be made evident by the indirect immunofluorescence technique in the nuclei of both H 1418 and H 1557 cells.

The results obtained at the first passage of ceruloplasmin-incubated influenza virus A/PR8/34 (H0N1) in chorioallantoic membrane fragments demonstrate the "trap effect" of ceruloplasmin and are characterized by the low values of the ratios between the hemagglutinating and neuraminidase activities and the infectivity of the resulted progens. At the 2nd passage, both in the absence and in the presence of ceruloplasmin the previously observed changes are accompanied by severe modifications in the antigenicity of the progens, as shown by the HAI titres obtained against a rabbit antiserum to influenza virus A/PR8/34 (H0N1).

Prospective and retrospective statistical studies were performed in 1,000 cases of congenital malformations. The incidences and severity of the different types of malformations were correlated with the risk and protection factors having acted on the pregnant woman. The correlation coefficients were higher in the case of specific risk factors, among which special attention was paid to maternal virus infections. The possibility is discussed of developing a programme for the individual protection of high-risk cases, implying the compensation of the exposure to risk factors by the application of adequate protection factors, according to the calculated scores.

As evaluated by light scattering at 90 degrees, natural organic oligocations such as putrescine, spermidine and spermine interfered with myxovirus aggregates which were induced by the histone H2A and strongly amplified by shaking during incubation. In contrast, the synthetic oligocation 1.7-diamino heptane itself aggregated the virus particles, its action being unmodified by adding polycationic H2A in abundance. When human chromosome preparations treated with protamine solution and shaked during incubation were covered with a stable polycationic molecular layer, the chromosomes had become unstainable by the Giemsa method even if the dye was used in excess. Nevertheless, the affinity of influenza virus particles for protamine was so high that they were able to dissociate the protamine molecules from the preformed complexes reconstituting the affinity of chromosome preparations to Giemsa stain. The virus-caused shift in the staining ability of chromosomes did not occur when bacterial suspension was added instead of the viral one. The model of oligocationic relaxation and of polycation condensation accounting for the modulatory effects of polyamines is discussed.

Treatment of mice with different cellular nucleic acids prior to inoculation of influenza virus A/PR8/34 (H1N1) conferred--in some cases--a nonspecific protection against the experimental infection. The optimal amount of nucleic acid was 400 micrograms/mouse, irrespective of the origin or type of the macromolecule.

Transformation of rat embryo fibroblast was induced by a temperature-sensitive mutant of herpes simplex virus type 2. Transformation was scored using the morphological criterion of focus formation and the cell changes that lead to the final focus are described. Virus genome persistence in the transformed cell line was demonstrated by the presence of virus-specific membrane antigens and by the specificity of antibodies elicited in rabbits by inoculation of transformed cells. The cytogenetic analysis of the transformed cells revealed changes in chromosome number and the presence of marker chromosomes.

Human gamma type interferon (IFN) preparations were obtained through phytohemagglutinin stimulation of leukocytes from the peripheral blood. Biological value of these preparations varied between 160 u and 800 u/ml, depending on leukocyte incubation medium, culture system and inductor conservation. The rising of the antiviral activity through association between gamma (3 u) and alpha (27 u) interferons was revealed by the virus quantity reduction (in this case the vesicular stomatitis virus was used) during a 24-hour multiplication cycle. The protection ensured by the mixture of the two types of interferon was about ten times higher than the additive effect of the two preparations. Study of the antiproliferative activity of a gamma interferon preparation was conducted on two human cell lines of tumoral origin (T-10 from a glioblastoma, and HEp-2) and revealed the difficulties to quantify precisely this property of the crude gamma interferon preparations.

At high in vitro passage levels HSV-2-transformed hamster and rat cell lines were oncogenic for the homologous animals, inducing fusocellular or round-cell sarcomas. The cell lines obtained by in vitro cultivation of the tumors were free of infectious virus.

Native and purified HBsAg preparations were subjected in vitro to the action of cetylpyridinium bromide (Bromocet), hibitan-chlorhexidine (Hibiscrub), chloramine B and propolis extract, at different concentrations and for various time intervals. The effect of these agents on the serological reactivity of HBsAg was tested by electroimmunodiffusion (EID) and radioimmunoassay (RIA). Chloramine B and the propolis extract had a significant inhibitory effect-ascertained by both EID and RIA - on purified HBsAg, but not on the native preparation. The inhibition exerted by Bromocet and Hibiscrub indicated by EID results was not confirmed by RIA.

Sera collected from several migratory birds of the Danube Delta, from humans and domestic birds and animals of three Romanian counties were tested by hemagglutination-inhibition reaction for the presence of antibodies to Yaba 1--Lednice 110 virus. Antibodies could be detected in only 8 of the 14 species of migratory birds included in the study, especially in wild geese and ducks.

A mathematical methodology is suggested which allows the a priori calculation of the risk of premature delivery, by a formula relying on the scores attributed to different specific risk factors (maternal virus infections included). The scores are estimated either directly, or starting from the scores of nonspecific factors. The statistical significance of the different scores, correlations and formulas is analyzed.

The studies on respiratory virus diseases performed for 30 years in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology approached various aspects of the ecology of inlfuenza and parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses and other respiratory viruses, including numerous experimental, fundamental, clinical and morphopathological investigations. Special attention was paid to specific influenza prophylaxis and to the preparation of an inactivated influenza vaccine applicable by nasal and oral route.

The presence of interferon and type A immunoglobulins (IgA) was followed up in the nasopharyngeal washings collected from volunteers immunized intranasally with an inactivated influenza vaccine [strain A/Rom 1/73 (H3N2)]. Interferon was detected 24 hours after vaccine administration, its incidence being similar to that in the course of acute infection. Intranasal administration of inactivated influenza vaccine stimulated the production of secretory IgA in 3 of 10 samples collected 12 days after vaccination. At the same time, IgA were found in 4 samples collected before vaccination, and inhibited in certain cases the stimulation of interferon synthesis. The practical importance of the route of influenza vaccine administration is discussed.

The nitroso-urea derivative IOB-252 was administrered in monkey kidney cell cultures in a concentration of 40 mug/ml 24 hours before inoculation of vaccinia virus and maintained afterwards in a concentration of 25 mug/ml. The drug inhibited vaccinia virus multiplication, hemagglutinin synthesis and late cytopathic effect, but did not prevent early cytopathic lesions. IOB-252 inhibited the synthesis of interferon initiated by a viral inductor and blocked the antiviral effect of an exogeneous interferon. The mechanism of action of the drug is discussed.
