Objective/context: In France's second half of the 19th century, magazines such as Le Tour du Monde and illustrated novels were used to promote geographical sciences and educational and political propaganda of the Third Republic and its economic interests based on the diaries of French travelers. This article analyzes the geographical imaginaries of the Orinoco from a case study of the publications of the travels of Jules Crevaux and Jean Chaffanjon. These travelers' characterization of the territory and its people in their texts and images framed this region within the depressed tropical areas, thus justifying the foreign exploitation of its resources. Methodology: This analysis is based on the publications of both travelers--in Le Tour du Monde articles and illustrated novels-- and a corpus of images--published engravings, and photographs and sketches in the archive made in situ during the explorations--. Their analytical approach as historical sources and the visual and iconographic analysis is critical to understanding the production and dissemination of geographical imaginaries about the Orinoco. Originality: Studies on these authors have been widely circulated in France but have been less discussed in South America. This study's relevance lies in applying the tropicality approach and the geographical imaginaries in informal French imperialism. The images of the Orinoco have been studied in the 18th and early 19th centuries from the illustrations and maps of authors such as Gumilla, Gilij and Humboldt; in this case, we tackle the most extensive corpus of published and unpublished images of this region and its massive circulation at the end of the 19th century, broadening the field of study of the territories in the nations' periphery. Conclusions: The geographical imaginaries produced from the illustrated press and later in the format of geographical novels circulated widely among the enlightened and general public, disseminating characterizations of this territory and its inhabitants as savage but rich in resources and potentially domesticable. The analysis of the texts and illustrations of the Orinoco, according to French interests in American territories, allowed us to understand its representation as an adventurous and marginal space that still had to be conquered. The spectacled caiman needs to be better studied, and its basic life history needs to be explored. Growth rates and changes in growth with age and size are essential life history characteristics. This study aimed to determine the growth rate of juvenile spectacled caimans in captivity and understand the factors that affect the growth rate of juvenile spectacled caimans. Fourteen juvenile spectacled caimans were used in the present study. The study shows that the growth rate of all the juvenile spectacled caimans varied, where specimens such as Delta and 9th Dot had the highest growth rate in terms of weight at 0.98 g/day and 0.89g/day, respectively. However, Little Foot had the lowest growth rates in snout-vent length and weight parameters at 0.03 cm/day and 0.08 cm/day. This study shows that the growth rate of juvenile spectacled caimans that dominance has a strong effect on the growth rate of juvenile spectacled caimans in captivity. Along the Costa Rican Caribbean shoreline, it is possible to find two species of crocodilians, the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and the spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus). This region can be divided geographically into three subregions: North, Central, and South Caribbean. We conducted this research in the North Caribbean, between October 6, 2018 and August 31, 2019. Specifically, we worked in the area lying between the Jalova Station of the Tortugero National Park (TNP) and Agua Dulce Lake situated in the northern tip of Machuca Island, at the mouth of the Colorado River inside the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge (BACORE), which includes other connecting wetlands as well (Sierpe River, Samay Lake). Overall, this study area had an approximate extension of 408 km2 characterized by large, wide and deep canals, as well as wetlands, meanders, and adjacent lakes. The sampling was performed along 10 segments that varied in length from 7.5 km up to 29.49 km, located in the nearby zones of TNP and BACORE. In these zones, nightly counts were carried out using dazzling lamps. Individuals of C. acutus and C. crocodilus were classified into eight and six body size classes, respectively (both with 50 cm intervals). A relative abundance of 0.55 crocodiles and 1.37 caimans per linear kilometer was estimated during these spotlight surveys. The capture of 39 caimans let us to estimate a ratio of 30 males to 9 females (3.3:1 M:F). In stark contrast, only 1 male and 1 female crocodile were captured. A total of 85 C. acutus and 205 C. crocodilus were observed. Regarding the number of caiman sightings in the TNP, a statistically significant difference was found (Χ2=5.62, p≤0.05) for the distribution by sizes between the zones of BACORE and TNP, whereas no such difference was found for C. crocodilus sightings (Z=–1.22, p≥0.222). Some segments had a higher probability of caiman occurrence than did others in the surveys performed during the monitoring period (X2=8.36, p≤0.05), especially the Jalova-Sierpe River, Caño Negro-Tortuguero, and Tortuguero-Samay Lake (Tortuguero subarea) segments. Ninety percent of the sightings occurred in the BACORE zone, and this was significantly different (Χ2=7.34, p≤0.026) from the studied subareas. The number of crocodile sightings in the Colorado River segment was significantly different and higher than the other segments (X2=7.28, p≤0.05). There was a significant statistical difference among the sizes in all areas of study (X2=5.529, p≤0.026). The abundance of C. acutus and C. crocodilus in the north Caribbean part is lower than in the central Caribbean part of Costa Rica, where this species could use the resources available in more urbanized areas.

We used radio-telemetry to record how Caiman yacare (Cy) and Melanosuchus niger (Mn) responded to the intrusion of the Maniqui river into Cedral Lagoon in the Bolivian Amazon. Nine M. niger and 3 C. yacare were followed between December 2015 and May 2016. Both species showed a gradual reduction in mean monthly range from December (19.96 ha Mn and 1.74 ha Cy) to May 2016 (0.08 ha Mn and 0.24 ha Cy). Habitat use was fairly constant throughout the months for both species, Melanosuchus niger used mainly open swampy forests and Cyperaceae Marshes, while C. yacare used more islands and flooded grasslands. This study shows that both species of caimans responded to changes in depth and vegetation types, as their habitat as a whole was changed by river intrusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ticks are parasites of birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, but information about tick communities that parasitize reptiles in the Neotropical region is still fragmentary. In the present study, we assessed the presence of ticks on broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris) and Cuvier's dwarf caimans (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) trapped in the Atlantic rainforest biome in Pernambuco state, north-eastern Brazil, to determine which tick species feed on these animals and how frequent or rare this parasite-wildlife association is. We also report an occasional finding of Amblyomma rotundatum on a smooth-fronted caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus) in the Amazon biome in Pará state, northern Brazil. Out of 490 animals trapped in the Atlantic rainforest biome, four (0.82%) broad-snouted caimans were infested by ticks. Ticks belonged to two Amblyomma species: A. rotundatum (three females) and A. fuscum (one male). Our findings indicate that ticks are infrequent parasites of caimans in the Atlantic rainforest biome. Tick infestation on broad-snouted caimans is probably of minor clinical significance and probably a casual finding due to habitat sharing with the common tick hosts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe the formation of the chondrocranium and the ossification pattern of the skull of the Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger (Spix, 1825)). The embryos were cleared and double-stained with Alizarin Red S and Alcian Blue 8GX. Additionally, they were visualized by histological hematoxylin and eosin staining and computed tomography imaging. The chondrocranium of M. niger comprised the nasal capsule, orbitotemporal, and optic–occipital regions. Its development began at stage 9, with the chondrification of the acrochordal cartilage, trabeculae, and mandibular cartilage. The optic capsule was formed in the caudolateral portion of the chondrocranium at stage 13. The basal plate appeared at stage 14, with foramina for the hypoglossal. The chondrocranium was completely formed at stage 16. The first osteogenic events were noted at stage 13, in the bones, maxilla, jugal, postorbital, and pterygoid. The quadratojugal, prefrontal, frontal, and squamosal began their ossification at stage 14. The parietal bone began to ossify only at stage 20. The basisphenoid began at stage 15 and the parasphenoid began at stage 16. The jaw bones ossified between stages 13 and 16. The Pantanal hosts diverse wildlife species and therefore is a hotspot for arbovirus studies in South America. A serosurvey for Mayaro virus (MAYV), eastern (EEEV), western (WEEV) and Venezuelan (VEEV) equine encephalitis viruses was conducted with 237 sheep, 87 free-ranging caimans and 748 equids, including 37 collected from a ranch where a neurologic disorder outbreak had been recently reported. Sera were tested for specific viral antibodies using plaque-reduction neutralisation test. From a total of 748 equids, of which 264 were immunised with vaccine composed of EEEV and WEEV and 484 had no history of immunisation, 10 (1.3%) were seropositive for MAYV and two (0.3%) for VEEV using criteria of a ≥ 4-fold antibody titre difference. Among the 484 equids without history of immunisation, 48 (9.9%) were seropositive for EEEV and four (0.8%) for WEEV using the same criteria. Among the sheep, five were sero- positive for equine encephalitis alphaviruses, with one (0.4%) for EEEV, one (0.4%) for WEEV and three (1.3%) for VEEV. Regarding free-ranging caimans, one (1.1%) and three (3.4%), respectively, had low titres for neutralising antibodies to VEEV and undetermined alphaviruses. The neurological disorder outbreak could not be linked to the alphaviruses tested. Our findings represent strong evidence that MAYV and all equine encephalitis alphaviruses circulated in the Pantanal.

Caimanines are crocodylians currently restricted to South and Central America and the oldest members are from lower Palaeocene localities of the Salamanca Formation (Chubut Province, Argentina). We report here a new caimanine from this same unit represented by a skull roof and partial braincase. Its phylogenetic relationships were explored in a cladistic analysis using standard characters and a morphogeometric two-dimensional configuration of the skull roof. The phylogenetic results were used for an event-based supermodel quantitative palaeobiogeographic analysis. The new species is recovered as the most basal member of the South American caimanines, and the Cretaceous North American lineage 'Brachychampsa and related forms' as the most basal Caimaninae. The biogeographic results estimated north-central North America as the ancestral area of Caimaninae, showing that the Cretaceous and Palaeocene species of the group were more widespread than thought and became regionally extinct in North America around the Cretaceous-Palaeocene boundary. A dispersal event from northcentral North America during the middle Late Cretaceous explains the arrival of the group to South America. The Palaeogene assemblage of Patagonian crocodylians is composed of three lineages of caimanines as a consequence of independent dispersal events that occurred between North and SouthAmerica and within South America around the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. Abstract: The effect of stress in wild vertebrates has been little investigated, especially in crocodilians. In the wild, crocodilians face numerous stressors such as climatic factors, toxicant exposure, and infection. Exposure to stressors may affect the physiological processes of crocodilians, with consequences on its fitness and survival. We experimentally investigated the effect of a 4‐week exposure to environmental challenges (food restriction, water restriction and high temperature) on growth, immunological investment and corticosterone levels of juvenile Caiman latirostris. White blood cells counts, natural antibody (NAb) levels and complement system activity were evaluated to characterize the influence of those treatments on the immune system. We found deprivation of food resulted in reduction in growth and body condition, whereas high temperature had a beneficial effect on the variables measured. Individuals exposed to heat treatment (37 ± 1°C) grew more, and obtained better body condition, higher NAb levels, and significantly lower corticosterone levels relative to caimans in all other groups. Food restricted caimans also illustrated higher NAb levels. Our findings suggest that C. latirostris juveniles are able to tolerate environmental stressors and they are even favored by high temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proximate compositions of dorsal, ventral, leg, and tail cuts of farmed spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) were determined. The water, protein, fat, and ash contents of muscle were 77-78%, 19-23%, 0.3- 1.2%, and 1.0%, respectively. The dominant nucleotide-related compound in the tissues was inosine monophosphate (IMP) (68.6-84.9%). The predominant free amino acids (FAAs) in the muscle of spectacled caiman were taurine (Tau), glycine (Gly), alanine (Ala), and histidine (His), along with a dipeptide of anserine (Ans) (80-183 mg/100 g) and carnosine (Car) (35-103 mg/100 g) being detected in each sample. The major fatty acid composition included palmitic (16:0), oleic (18:1 cis-9), linoleic (18:2n-6), and stearic (C18:0) acids. The amount of docosahexaenoic acid (4.27-8.76%) was higher than that of eicosapentaenoic acid (0.99-2.24%). The ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid in spectacled caiman (0.83-1.19) was higher than that in other commonly consumed meat. Meat from the spectacled caiman can be characterized as a valuable food for human consumption in terms of these nutritional features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Hepatozoon species are the most common intracellular hemoparasite found in reptiles. Hepatozoon caimani, whose vectors are Culex mosquitoes, has been detected in a high prevalence among caimans in Brazil by blood smears examinations. The present work aimed to detect and characterize the Hepatozoon spp. found in 33 caimans (24 free-ranging and 9 captive; 28 males and 5 females) (Caiman crocodilus yacare) sampled at Poconé, North Pantanal, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, using blood smears examinations and molecular techniques. Hepatozoon spp.-gametocytes were found in 70.8% (17/24) and 88.8% (8/9) of blood smears from free-ranging and captive caimans, respectively. Hepatozoon spp. 18S rRNA DNA was found in 79.2% (19/24) and 88.8% (8/9) of free-ranging and captive caimans, respectively. Captive crocodilians reduce their intake of food during cold periods, even when kept under controlled conditions and fed ad libitum . These manifestations may be due to photoperiod length which is known to influence circadian rhythm. To test this hypothesis, 72 Caiman latirostris hatchlings from three wild-harvested nests, were reared under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity with varying hours of light exposure. Three treatments were performed: A) increasing photoperiod to 16 h light; B) decreasing photoperiod to 8 h light; C) and the control treatment with constant 12 h light / 12 h dark. Caiman growth was measured as both weight and linear measures (snout-vent length and total length). Individuals from the increased photoperiod treatment group (16 h) showed a significant increase in all growth parameters compared to other treatments (control = 12 h; reduced photoperiod = 8 h). There was no difference in stress (plasma corticosterone levels) between the treatment groups ensuring that the additional growth benefit was not antagonistic to welfare. Previous studies showed infections of Hepatozoon caimani in wild populations of caimans in wide regions from Brazil; some of those demonstrated that trophic chain are linked to natural infections through paratenic hosts or by the direct ingestion of vectors. These studies life cycle of H. caimani contributed inestimably to the knowledge of transmission routes, yet but lack enhancement tools for better detail of parasite. This study reports the forms in the blood and tissues, and also partial molecular characterization of the H. caimani following part of the 18S rRNA region. In the southern Pantanal, there were sampling 39 adult caimans ( Caiman yacare), where 31 (79.5%) were parasitized by H. caimani. Free gametocytes had an average intensity of 19.6% and intraerythrocytic forms 7.42%, in the blood smears. In stained smears of the liver and lungs of naturally infected caimans which were examined, monozoic and dizoic cysts were found in these tissues, generally next to the vessels. In the histopathology, meronts were observed in the wall of vessels from liver and kidney ducts. Blood samples were forwarded to PCR process and produced amplicons with about 600 and 900 bp, respectively, for the primers HEPF300/HEP900 and HEMO1/HEMO2. This was the first report of molecular confirmation of Hepatozoon in populations of naturally infected caimans of morphological detail of the gametocytes in scanning electron microscopy and histology of merogony in livers and kidneys of C. yacare. This study evaluated the yield, color, and chemical composition of commercial cuts (tail, sirloin cut, back fillet, and thigh) of Pantanal caiman meat in both sexes. The yield of tail was higher than other cuts, and the yield of females (17.0%) was higher than males (15.9%). The thigh of males had lower protein content (20.8%) compared with other cuts. Females showed a higher lipid content in the tail (2.4%) and thigh (0.8%) compared with males (1.7% and 0.4%, respectively). The tail presented the greatest content of monounsaturated fatty acids (45.2%) and higher n6/n3 ratio (4.6). Although lightness was not different among cuts or between sexes, there were differences in color. Males have more yellowish meat compared with females. Thigh and back fillet were more reddish when compared to sirloin cut and tail, regardless of sex. In conclusion, female tail meat provided greater yield and lipid content than males, and this result was statistically significant. These findings can help producers and consumers alike, better understand yield, quality, and nutritional quality of Pantanal caiman meat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study demonstrated the potential of glyphosate (GLY), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), imidacloprid (IMI) and chlorantraniliprole (CAP) separately and in mixtures to induce oxidative stress and DNA damage in Caiman latirostris hatchlings. Under controlled condition, an embryonic exposure to these pesticides was done at concentrations recommended for soybean crops. Treatments were: negative control, GLY, 2,4-D, IMI, CAP, mixture 1 (M1): GLY + 2,4-D, M2: IM I + CAP and M3: GLY + 2,4-D + IMI + CAP. At hatching, blood samples were taken for the evaluation of genotoxicity, oxidative damage to lipids and DNA, the enzymatic activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the expression level of their corresponding genes (catalase: cat and superoxide dismutase: sod). It has been shown that IMI, M2 and M3 induced a significant inhibition of CAT activity while no effect was observed on SOD. In turn, lipid peroxidation was significantly higher in individuals exposed to IMI, and to all the mixtures. Besides, genotoxicity and oxidative DNA damage were observed in all exposed groups. The results of mRNA expression showed no difference at transcription levels. In the same way, no alterations in growth parameters were recorded at hatching. Regarding to the mixtures, we observed a potentiating action of IMI on M3 in lipid peroxidation as well as independent action on oxidative DNA damage and genotoxicity parameters. Despite evidence of West Nile virus (WNV) activity in Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina, this virus has not been reported in most South American countries. In February 2009, we commenced an investigation for WNV in mosquitoes, horses and caimans from the Pantanal, Central-West Brazil. The sera of 168 horses and 30 caimans were initially tested using a flaviviruses-specific epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (blocking ELISA) for the detection of flavivirus-reactive antibodies. The seropositive samples were further tested using a plaque-reduction neutralisation test (PRNT90) for WNV and its most closely-related flaviviruses that circulate in Brazil to confirm the detection of specific virus-neutralising antibodies. Of the 93 (55.4%) blocking ELISA-seropositive horse serum samples, five (3%) were seropositive for WNV, nine (5.4%) were seropositive for St. Louis encephalitis virus, 18 (10.7%) were seropositive for Ilheus virus, three (1.8%) were seropositive for Cacipacore virus and none were seropositive for Rocio virus using PRNT90, with a criteria of > four-fold antibody titre difference. All caimans were negative for flaviviruses-specific antibodies using the blocking ELISA. No virus genome was detected from caiman blood or mosquito samples. The present study is the first report of confirmed serological evidence of WNV activity in Brazil.

ABSTRACT Hunting caimans ( Caiman spp.) with baited hooks in the Brazilian Amazon represents one of the largest illegal wildlife industries in the world. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of water level, distance from settlements, and hunting effort on caiman meat production. In 2008, we accompanied 31 caiman hunting expeditions in and around a wetland protected area located in the Amazon-Purus interfluve in Brazil. We measured and weighed all captured caimans. We used simple and multiple linear regressions to analyze our data. The hunting technique is not selective for the capture of spectacled caimans ( Caiman crocodilus) or black caimans ( Melanosuchus niger) and occurs throughout the year. Fresh-meat production was similarly correlated with individualś weights for both species. Hunting success was strongly related to river level, distance from human settlements, and hunting effort. We estimated an annual production of 37,050 kg of meat from the study area, representing 3,562 caimans harvested and gross earnings of $18,500 (U.S.). The spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) was introduced to Puerto Rico over 50 years ago with the Tortuguero Lagoon Natural Reserve (TLNR) as its epicenter, where it is now established as an apex predator. Although concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact of this naturalized predator on Puerto Rico's native fauna, little was known of the caiman's diet on the island. Therefore this study was conducted to determine the diet of the spectacled caiman and its potential impact on island animals. For this study, measurements were obtained from 138 caimans across all life stages (12–94 cm snout–vent length; SVL) from October 2014 to May 2015 within the TLNR. Stomach contents were retrieved and analyzed based on prey category occurrence frequency. In addition, caiman muscle samples were obtained to determine their nitrogen and carbon isotopic signature. Insects were the most abundant prey items encountered with 90.7% and 68.8% in hatchling (SVL < 20 cm) and juvenile (SVL = 20–59.9 cm) stomach respectively. In adult (SVL > 60 cm) caimans, fish remains were the most significant prey items with 38.3% frequency of occurrence. Fish, insects, and gastropods were the only categories of ten designated prey categories to show significant variation among the three caiman age classes. Piracatinga, Calophysus macropterus Lichtenstein, was not exploited in Brazil until the early 2000s, when fish pressure increased markedly due to growing demands. The methods for capturing piracatinga involve the use of caiman and dolphin carcasses as bait; and the growing organization of the hunting and marketing of these animals raises concern. This study describes the production chain of piracatinga fishing in the region of the middle Solimões River, in Brazilian Amazonia. It was conducted in 19 local communities of the Mamirauá Reserve; data were collected from 50 individuals involved in the activity, divided into eight categories within the production chain. The production of piracatinga reaches its peak in the first months of the closed season for other fishes. The average profit margins of the activity between 2011 and 2013 were higher than those of other artisanal fishing activities, but they varied from 38% of losses by event to profits of 90%. The use of corrals and baits from aquatic vertebrates in piracatinga fishing are exclusive to this activity. It is important to develop participatory and sustainable options, such as the use of commercial fishes as bait or the engagement of the people involved in legal activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of osmotic dehydration of ginger on the properties of color, total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC). Fresh samples were pretreated with scalding (100°C/1.0 minute). Water loss (WL) and solid gain (SG) kinetics were performed using three sucrose concentrations: 35%, 50% and 65% at three temperatures: 40°C, 55°C and 70°C. WL and SG simulated kinetics by Diffusion model for cubes averaged aR2of 0.95. The diffusivities for water and solid by Fick’s Law obtained maximum values of 6.81 × 10−7and 2.65 × 10−7 m2/s, respectively. WL results were obtained up to 60.83% and SG 32.24%. Ginger treatments without blanching (GWB) at 40°C with 35% and 50% sucrose, respectively, showed a similar fresh ginger color. The GWB treatments showed the higher TPC using 50% sucrose at 40°C (753 μg GAE/mL) and AC (341.96 mg AAE/mL). [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The sporogony of Hepatozoon caimani has been studied, by light microscopy, in the mosquito Culex fatigans fed on specimens of the caiman Caiman c. crocodilus showing gametocytes in their peripheral blood. Sporonts iniciate development in the space between the epithelium of the insect gut and the elastic membrane covering the haemocoele surface of the stomach. Sporulating oocysts are clustered on the gut, still invested by the gut surface membrane. Fully mature oocysts were first seen 21 days after the blood-meal. No sporogonic stages were found in some unidentified leeches fed on an infected caiman, up to 30 days following the blood-meal. When mosquitoes containing mature oocysts were fed to frogs (Leptodactylus fuscus and Rana catesbeiana), cysts containing cystozoites developed in the internal organs, principally the liver. Feeding these frogs to farm-bred caimans resulted in the appearance of gametocytes in their peripheral blood at some time between 59 and 79 days later, and the development of tissue cysts in the liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Transmission of the parasite was also obtained by feeding young caimans with infected mosquitoes and it is suggested that both methods occur in nature. The finding of similar cysts containing cystozoites in the semi-aquatic lizard Neusticurus bicarinatus, experimentally fed with infected C. fatigans, suggests that other secondary hosts may be involved.

We conducted a study of black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) growth rates using data from a long-term markrecapture study carried out in the Rupununi region of Guyana between 2005 and 2015. In contrast to previous studies, growth rates of black caiman declined with increasing size and this decline occurred more rapidly for females. Size-at-age models predicted that males and females reach asymptotic sizes of 178.2-189.0 cm SVL and 140.1-143.4 cm SVL, respectively. Our results suggest that growth rates of black caiman in the Rupununi region follow the same general patterns as for other crocodilians, and that disparities with previous black caiman studies may be largely related to density-dependent factors, among other possibilities. A new fishery has been developing in the Amazon that uses dolphin and caiman species as bait to catch piracatinga ( Calophysus macropterus), having thus the potential to cause adverse food-web impacts; however a lack of basic understanding of this fishery is a limitation to the necessary management action. Interviews with fishers and analyses of fishing records in Brazil were used for the study, including harvest methods, types of baits used, commercialization chains, and the rate of increase of piracatinga yields in recent years. Piracatinga fishers are subsistence fishers who harvest piracatinga as a means to alleviate economic constraints when the catch of other species is not profitable or banned due to (reproductive) closed seasons. Harvesting is done with wooden and nylon crates and cages in which whole or pieces of caimans and dolphins are placed to attract the piracatinga, entrapping them. The piracatinga are then sold to intermediate sellers for resale to a few large fish freezing and processing plants for export to Colombia. Annual piracatinga yields in the study area increased at an average rate of 446.5% per year, from 865 kg in 2003 to 23 176 kg in 2009. Because dolphins and caimans comprise various endangered species, the Brazilian government has recently implemented a ban on this fishery, which can be enforced at fish freezing and processing plants. However, there is a danger that such enforcement will lead to the development of a geographically dispersed chain of commercialization and export, such as currently exists for other species including caimans, which would be impossible to control. The in vitro synergistic activity between ciprofloxacin and serum of broad snouted caiman on Escherichia coli was studied. The estimated MIC value of ciprofloxacin was 0.0188 |g/ml, and two assays of kill curve during 5 hours were performed: the first one in a standard culture medium and the second one in the presence of caiman serum. Different concentrations of ciprofloxacin were tested. Ciprofloxacin showed higher values of bacterial elimination rate in the presence of caiman serum in all concentrations tested. The combined activity of sub-inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin and the humoral immune factors present in caiman serum determined an increase in the bacterial elimination observed in this assay. We suggest that the antibacterial activity of complement and natural antibodies present in caiman serum, which can bind to both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and acting through the classical complement pathway, can inhibit bacterial growth of Escherichia coli by lysis. Urbanization of forested wilderness could threaten biodiversity if expanding cities drive demand for wildlife as food. We examined the scale and drivers of urban wildlife consumption in the forested prefrontier of Brazilian Amazonia, defined as municipalities ( n = 73) with over 90% of their original forest cover still intact. A representative survey of two prefrontier cities indicated that virtually all urban households consume wildlife, including fish (99%), bushmeat (mammals and birds; 79%), chelonians (48%) and caimans (28%)-alarming evidence of an underreported wild-meat crisis in the heart of Amazonia. We also report rapid growth of cities and inadequate resources to deter illegal consumption in this urbanized wilderness covering 1.86 million km2. We evaluate relevant policy levers and conclude that poverty-alleviation programs may accelerate a long-term transition from consumption of wildlife as an economical source of protein for the poor to luxury food for the wealthy. We argue that innovative environmental governance could limit wildlife consumption to only harvest-tolerant species. Researchers and policy-makers should engage with policies and ideas that promote poverty alleviation and supply poor city-dwellers with affordable alternatives to eating wildlife. C aiman latirostris has temperature-dependent sex determination and is potentially susceptible to environmental temperature fluctuations and, thus, to the global climate change phenomena. Considering the potential consequences of increasing temperatures for C a. latirostris offspring, we examined the effects of climatic conditions on sex ratios produced by caimans in wild nests and in particular how climate variables affect nest temperature and the percentage of females produced. We also explored the potential consequences of a hypothetic 0.5 and 1.0°C increase in nest temperature on caiman populations. The proportion of females produced from nests in the wild varied among reproductive seasons, as mean nest temperatures varied between 27.1 and 33.9°C. However, after seven seasons the sex ratio biased toward females, and only during extreme events (strong El Niño Southern Oscillation event, La Niña) was there a reduction in the percentage of females produced in the wild. In the hypothetic scenarios of global warming, we predict a decrease of unisexual female nests, with nests containing both sexes or unisexual male nests becoming more frequent. Entire clutches might be lost if nest temperatures rise above 34.5°C for extended periods. Background: Müller cells, the principal glial cells of the vertebrate retina, are fundamental for the maintenance and function of neuronal cells. In most vertebrates, including humans, Müller cells abundantly express Kir4.1 inwardly rectifying potassium channels responsible for hyperpolarized membrane potential and for various vital functions such as potassium buffering and glutamate clearance; inter-species differences in Kir4.1 expression were, however, observed. Localization and function of potassium channels in Müller cells from the retina of crocodiles remain, hitherto, unknown. Methods: We studied retinae of the Spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus fuscus), endowed with both diurnal and nocturnal vision, by (i) immunohistochemistry, (ii) whole-cell voltage-clamp, and (iii) fluorescent dye tracing to investigate K+ channel distribution and glia-to-neuron communications. Results: Immunohistochemistry revealed that caiman Müller cells, similarly to other vertebrates, express vimentin, GFAP, S100β, and glutamine synthetase. In contrast, Kir4.1 channel protein was not found in Müller cells but was localized in photoreceptor cells. Instead, 2P-domain TASK-1 channels were expressed in Müller cells. Electrophysiological properties of enzymatically dissociated Müller cells without photoreceptors and isolated Müller cells with adhering photoreceptors were significantly different. This suggests ion coupling between Müller cells and photoreceptors in the caiman retina. Sulforhodamine-B injected into cones permeated to adhering Müller cells thus revealing a uni-directional dye coupling. Conclusion: Our data indicate that caiman Müller glial cells are unique among vertebrates studied so far by predominantly expressing TASK-1 rather than Kir4.1 K+ channels and by bi-directional ion and uni-directional dye coupling to photoreceptor cells. Rates of growth and survival in wild populations are affected by the physical environment, biotic interactions, and density-dependent processes, such as growth and fecundity. However, the relative importance of these factors in long-lived reptiles is poorly understood. We analyzed growth rates of Melanosuchus niger and Caiman crocodilus coexisting in two areas of the Brazilian Amazon with very different environmental characteristics. Growth rates of Caiman crocodilus at the two sites were similar, but M. niger grew more slowly in the area with higher productivity and higher density of caimans. Growth rates of the same species from other sites and of the temperate-zone Alligator mississippiensis indicate large differences among sites, but little evidence that these differences are primarily due to differences in productivity or temperature. Demographic models used to estimate sustained yields from caiman harvests should take into account the likely importance of density-dependent growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although adult crocodilians have few predators (mostly humans and other crocodilians), hatchlings and eggs are killed and consumed by a diverse array of invertebrates, fishes, anurans, reptiles, birds, and mammals. We review published literature to evaluate the incidence of predation in crocodilian populations, and the implications of that mortality for crocodilian life-history evolution. Presumably because predation is size-dependent, small-bodied crocodilian taxa appear to be more vulnerable to predation (across a range of life stages) than are larger-bodied species. Several features of crocodilian biology likely reflect adaptations to reducing vulnerability to predation. For example, the threat of predation may have influenced the evolution of traits such as nest-site selection, maternal care of eggs and hatchlings, crèche behavior in hatchlings, and cryptic coloration and patterning. Even for such large and superficially invulnerable taxa such as crocodilians, tie avoidance of predation appears to have been a significant selective force on behavior, morphology, and ecology. A new small species ofEocaimanis described on the basis of three anterior left mandibular rami and one isolated tooth. The specimens came from the middle-upper Paleocene Itaboraí Basin (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil; Itaboraian South American Land Mammal Age). The new taxon differs from the other twoEocaimanspecies, such as its small size, likely participation of the splenial in the mandibular symphysis, a reduced angle between the longitudinal axis of the symphysis and the mandibular ramus, and enlarged ninth and tenth dentary teeth (in addition to the large first and fourth dentary teeth). The participation of the splenial in the mandibular symphysis is a unique character among caimanines (with the only possible exception beingTsoabichi greenriverensis). The new taxon provides new information on the taxonomic and anatomical diversity of the genusEocaiman, a taxon of prime importance to understand the evolutionary origins of caimans given its position as the basalmost member of Caimaninae. In the Amazon Basin, the use of the pink dolphin or boto (Inia geoffrensis) for bait in the piracatinga (Calophysus macropterus) fishery was first detected in the year 2000. Since then, this artisanal fishery has become more prevalent as it requires only a few hours of work per night and provides immediate cash earnings. It is thus an attractive addition to (or replacement for) traditional fishing. Previous reports have noted the use of botos as bait, but stated that the most common bait used are caimans (Melanosuchus niger, Caiman crocodilus). Estimates of the number of dolphins killed based on fish landings have been proposed and an apparent decrease in sighting/survival of an artificially-marked boto population was observed. Although stocks/population estimates, trends and actual numbers of hunted dolphins are unknown, the conservation impacts of this activity are of concern. Between October 2010 and November 2011, research was conducted within an area with serious conflicts between dolphins and fishermen as well as intense fishing for piracatinga, i.e. in the lower Japurá River, on the border with the Mamirauá and Amanã Sustainable Development Reserves, where both boto and tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) are used for bait. One-hundred and fifty-seven monitoring surveys were carried out in eight key communities, confirming 114 piracatinga fishing events through direct monitoring and incognito surveys of fishing gear (gaiolas). Empirical evidence of the activity in gaiolas comprised pieces of bait, carcass remains, piracatinga provoked vomits and dolphin fished carcasses. Of those, 31.2% (n = 35) involved cetacean bait (91.4% I. geoffrensis, 8.58% S. fluviatilis), 68.7% (n = 77) caiman bait (96% M. niger, 4% C. crocodilus), and two fishing events used both types. These percentages may be higher/lower in other areas within and outside the Reserves. Given the increasing trend of the piracatinga fishery, the authors believe that precautionary measures for the conservation of Amazonian dolphins are urgently needed. Development of practical short-term solutions (e.g. offal-baited fish traps) and multispecies management together with law enforcement, incentives and educational programmes could allow the future transition of riverine communities from the piracatinga fishery to sustainable, higher income activities. The Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger) experienced a dramatic population decline in the mid-20th century, becoming extinct or locally rare over most of its range due to habitat destruction and the commercial value of its hide. As the success and re-establishment of the species is now dependent on conservation efforts throughout the Amazon basin, Black Caimans require continuous monitoring despite extensive current legal protection. Although such efforts have mitigated the threat of human harvesting, a key issue facing the species today is ecological competition from sympatric Spectacled Caimans (Caiman crocodilus). In this study, we investigated this inferred competition by detailing the dietary overlap between Black Caimans and Spectacled Caimans in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve in 2009. Using an adaptation of the hose-Heimlich technique, we collected and then compared the stomach contents of several individuals of each species. We found that although the proportions of prey items in their stomach contents varied seasonally, die dietary overlap between the two species remained high, suggesting intense competition for food resources. In addition to seasonal changes, the diet composition of Black Caimans also shifted ontogenetically. Young Black Caimans primarily ate insects and crustaceans, whereas larger individuals mostly preyed on fish, reducing intraspecific competition between crocodilian adults and young. In the Crocodylia order, all species are known for their ability to produce sounds in several communication contexts. Though recent experimental studies have brought evidence of the important biological role of young crocodilian calls, especially at hatching time, the juvenile vocal repertoire still needs to be clarified in order to describe thoroughly the crocodilian acoustic communication channel. The goal of this study is to investigate the acoustic features (structure and information coding) in the contact call of juveniles from three different species (Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus, Black caiman, Melanosuchus niger and Spectacled caiman, Caiman crocodilus). We have shown that even though substantial structural differences exist between the calls of different species, they do not seem relevant for crocodilians. Indeed, juveniles and adults from the species studied use a similar and non-species-specific way of encoding information, which relies on frequency modulation parameters. Interestingly, using conditioning experiments, we demonstrated that this tolerance in responses to signals of different acoustic structures was unlikely to be related to a lack of discriminatory abilities. As water along dirt roads in the Pantanal floodplains diminishes, aquatic fauna becomes restricted to shallow pools. At the end of the 2009 dry season, we filmed giant otters living in pools predating on yacare caimans. Such predation has not been recorded in giant otters inhabiting the Pantanal. Individual otters captured sub-adult caimans. The otters did not share the prey, but conspecifics stole it after conflicts. Caiman predation could be related to resource scarcity in these marginal environments. Information on diet and interactions of endangered populations may underestimate their trophic niche when they recover from over-hunting and expand into sub-optimal habitat. Prevalence of Hepatozoon caimani has been reported in 76% of caimans Caiman yacare from the Pantanal region. Culex ( Melanoconion) spp. mosquitoes were recently identified as natural vectors of this parasite. However, culicids are not typically eaten by crocodilians, suggesting that the main transmission route is through ingestion of insectivorous vertebrates, such as anurans. The susceptibility of wild frogs Leptodactylus chaquensis, Leptodactylus podicipinus and Scinax nasicus to infection by H. caimani was verified. Wild-caught anurans were force fed with sporulated oocysts from laboratory-bred Culex ( Melanoconion) mosquitoes. Frogs were killed 30 days postinfection, and their internal organs were fed to caimans C. yacare and Caiman latirostris. Cystozoites were identified in fresh liver impression smears of L. chaquensis. C. yacare fed on anuran organ presented gametocytes in peripheral blood circulation between 74 and 80 days postinoculation (dpi). Gametocytes were also verified in C. latirostris fed on the internal organs of L. podicipinus and S. nasicus between 60-70 and 69-75 dpi, respectively. Since frogs used in experiment are sympatric with C. yacare and C. latirostris and may occur in the diet of these caimans, the results suggest these amphibians are paratenic hosts in the natural transmission cycle of H. caimani in Pantanal. Caiman latirostris (Broad-Snouted Caiman) is widely distributed in wetlands and rivers of South America. Hematological and blood chemistry reference values are necessary for detecting the effects of environmental, infectious, parasitic, or toxicological stress on C. latirostris health. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 24 healthy 6- to 18-month-old caimans. Blood cell dimensions and cytochemistry profiles were described; and reference intervals for hematological parameters, enzyme activities, and clinical analytes were established. Based on the caiman mass frequency distribution, two classes were distinguished: 125-900 g and 901-3,100 g. Although an overlap in age ranges was observed, total length and snout-vent length range values from both mass classes differed. This finding is particularly useful because, in the wild, caiman age is unknown, whereas growth parameters can be easily recorded. Caiman blood cells exhibited morphological features similar to those of other reptiles, with lymphocytes being the most numerous type of leukocytes. Significant positive correlations between mass and hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, red blood cell, and white blood cell counts were observed. Neither sex nor age was associated with differences in these parameters. Analysis of blood chemistry values found in this study was done by comparing with values reported for related species. Both similarities and discrepancies with values from other crocodiles are discussed. This study provides baseline information from healthy juvenile caimans to which subsequent measurements can be compared. Abstract: In spite of the importance of crocodilian vocalizations for the understanding of the evolution of sound communication in Archosauria and due to the small number of experimental investigations, information concerning the vocal world of crocodilians is limited. By studying black caimans Melanosuchus niger in their natural habitat, here we supply the experimental evidence that juvenile crocodilians can use a graded sound system in order to elicit adapted behavioral responses from their mother and siblings. By analyzing the acoustic structure of calls emitted in two different situations (‘undisturbed context’, during which spontaneous calls of juvenile caimans were recorded without perturbing the group, and a simulated ‘predator attack’, during which calls were recorded while shaking juveniles) and by testing their biological relevance through playback experiments, we reveal the existence of two functionally different types of juvenile calls that produce a different response from the mother and other siblings. Young black caimans can thus modulate the structure of their vocalizations along an acoustic continuum as a function of the emission context. Playback experiments show that both mother and juveniles discriminate between these ‘distress’ and ‘contact’ calls. Acoustic communication is thus an important component mediating relationships within family groups in caimans as it is in birds, their archosaurian relatives. Although probably limited, the vocal repertoire of young crocodilians is capable of transmitting the information necessary for allowing siblings and mother to modulate their behavior. Cranial fragments associated with the holotype of Necrosuchus ionensis reveal a dorsally shifted foramen aereum on the quadrate and a long, slender descending process of the exoccipital lateral to the basioccipital and approaching the basioccipital tubera. The former suggests that Necrosuchus is an alligatoroid and not a crocodylid, as first suggested; and the latter that it is a caiman. The scapulocoracoid shows evidence of early closure of the synchondrosis, further supporting a caiman affinity. Although we cannot yet pinpoint the phylogenetic placement of Necrosuchus amongst caimans, it nevertheless establishes a caimanine presence in South America by the Early Palaeocene. In South America, economic interests in last years have produced a constant increase in transgenic soybean cropping, with the corresponding rise in pesticide formulated products. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of pesticides formulations and mixtures on a South American caiman, Caiman latirostris, after in ovo exposure. We conducted a field-like experiment which simulates the environmental exposure that a caiman nest can receive in neighbouring croplands habitats. Experimental groups were Control group, Treatment 1: sprayed with a glyphosate herbicide formulation, and Treatment 2: sprayed with a pesticide mixture of glyphosate, endosulfan and cypermethrin formulations. Results demonstrated genotoxicity, enzymatic and metabolic alterations, as well as growth delay in caimans exposed in ovo to Treatments 1 and 2, showing a higher toxicity for the mixture. Integral evaluation through biomarkers of different biological meaning is highly informative as early indicators of contamination with pesticides and mixtures in this wildlife species. Tsoabichi greenriverensis, tax. nov., is based on cranial and postcranial remains from the lower Eocene (Wasatchian) Green River Formation of Wyoming. Casts of additional material in private collections include the complete skeleton of an immature specimen. It has abrupt supratemporal fenestral rims, extensive supraoccipital exposure on the skull table, and bipartite ventral osteoderms. The nasals are reduced to a thin anterior process as they approach the external naris, and the rim of the naris extends beyond the dorsal surface of the snout as a thin crest. There was no 'spectacle' between the orbits, but there are three distinct craniocaudally elongate ridges between the orbits. The parietal extends to the posterior margin of the skull table on either side of the large V-shaped dorsal exposure of the supraoccipital. Some of the dorsal osteoderms are mediolaterally elongate and bear two dorsal keels. A close relationship with caimans is supported by a parsimony analysis, although its precise position is unclear and some of the characters supporting a caimanine relationship also occur in poorly known Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary alligatoroids. A possible close relationship with Paleosuchus (the living dwarf caimans) would imply a very complex biogeographic scenario with multiple dispersals between the Americas during the Tertiary. We have characterized the right (RAo) and left aortae (LAo) and their interconnections through the Foramen of Panizza (FP) and anastomosis (AN) as forming a circulatory `ring around the heart'. We look at a couple of situations where postulated blood flow through the FP, both R→L and L→R could equally well be served by flow around the ring. Closure of the LAo not only prevents the pulmonary by-pass shunt but also the possibility of oxygenated blood reaching the gut through the FR Section of the RAo, below the origin of the carotid artery, will severely restrict flow of oxygenated blood to the hind part of the body. LAo section in alligators had no effect on growth or energy conversion compared with sham operated animals indicating little selective advantage for retention of bulk flow of venous blood to the body. RAo section in caimans revealed marked effects on growth and energy conversion but too few animals were available to claim statistical significance. Nevertheless, caimans with the RAo sectioned grew much slower compared with animals with the LAo cut. The effect was generalized with no differences in the proportionate relations between head and body measurements. We speculate that the ring around the heart will function just as well as flow through the FP in effecting R→L or L→R blood transfer in the central circulation of crocodilians. The prevalence and parasitemia of Hepatozoon caimani in the natural population of the caiman, Caiman yacare, from the Pantanal area, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, central Brazil, were evaluated according to gender and month of capture from July 2006 to February 2008. Blood samples were obtained bimonthly from a total of 229 caimans, and 76% were positive. Prevalence varied significantly according to sampling month and animal size. Almost all adults (100%) and young-adults (97%) were positive, while 63% of juvenile caimans were positive and all of the youngest individuals were negative. These results indicate that caimans are infected for the first time as juveniles. The mean parasitemia in blood was 13.5 ± 13.0 (n 5 174; 1-96 parasites) and did not significantly vary with respect to gender, month of sampling, size, or weight of the caiman. The frequency distribution of parasites in the caiman population was aggregated. Differences in feeding habits and exposure to vectors between the youngest caimans and juveniles are hypothesized as the main risk factors for caimans to acquire H. caimani in central Brazil. ABSTRACT.-We studied the feeding behaviors of two sympatric species of caimans (Melanosuchus niger and Caiman crocodilus) during the dry season in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, Amazonas State, Brazil. Observations were made in 50 X 13 m plots located along the land-water interface. We investigated the influence of interspecific density and the effects of temperature and water depth on the feeding behaviors of both species. We identified three principal categories of feeding behavior: trapping (with the body perpendicular to the shore, the caiman captures prey swimming close to the shore), active search (with the head under the water, the caiman searches for benthic prey), and jumping (leaping partially out of the water and capturing fish or other under water invertebrates prey). Using multiple linear regression, we found that water temperature had a negative effect on trapping by M. niger; and water depth did not affect feeding behaviors in either species. Density of M. niger did not affect either the density or the frequency of feeding by C. crocodilus. Results suggest that environmental factors have little influence on the feeding behaviors of the caimans we studied, and there is probably little interspecific competition for food during the dry season.
