We examine the late-time evolution of a qubit (or Unruh-De Witt detector) that hovers very near to the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole, while interacting with a free quantum scalar field. The calculation is carried out perturbatively in the dimensionless qubit/field coupling $g$, but rather than computing the qubit excitation rate due to field interactions (as is often done), we instead use Open EFT techniques to compute the late-time evolution to all orders in $g^2 t/r_s$ (while neglecting order $g^4 t/r_s$ effects) where $r_s = 2GM$ is the Schwarzschild radius. We show that for qubits sufficiently close to the horizon the late-time evolution takes a simple universal form that depends only on the near-horizon geometry, assuming only that the quantum field is prepared in a Hadamard-type state (such as the Hartle-Hawking or Unruh vacua). When the redshifted energy difference, $\omega_\infty$, between the two qubit states (as measured by a distant observer looking at the detector) satisfies $\omega_\infty r_s \ll 1$ this universal evolution becomes Markovian and describes an exponential approach to equilibrium with the Hawking radiation, with the off-diagonal and diagonal components of the qubit density matrix relaxing to equilibrium with different characteristic times, both of order $r_s/g^2$., Comment: 24 pages plus appendix, 2 figures v2) now published in JHEP, typos fixed and added subsection on the frame independence of the Markovian limit

Cosmologically active Brans-Dicke (or dilaton) scalar fields are generically ruled out by solar system tests of gravity unless their couplings to ordinary matter are much suppressed relative to gravitational strength, and this is a major hindrance when building realistic models of light dilatons coupled to matter. We propose a new mechanism for evading such bounds if matter also couples to a light axion, that exploits nonlinear target-space curvature interactions to qualitatively change how the fields respond to a gravitating source. We find that dilaton-matter couplings that would be excluded in the absence of an axion can become acceptable given an additional small axion-matter coupling, and this is possible because the axion-dilaton interactions end up converting the would-be dilaton profile into an axion profile. The trajectories of matter test bodies are then controlled by the much weaker axion-matter couplings and can easily be small enough to escape detection. We call this mechanism Axion Homeopathy because the evasion of the dilaton-coupling bounds persists for extremely small axion couplings provided only that they are nonzero. We explore the mechanism using axio-dilaton equations that are SL(2,R) invariant (as often appear in string compactifications), since for these the general solutions exterior to a spherically symmetric source can be found analytically. We use this solution to compute the relevant PPN parameters, $\beta$ and $\gamma$, and verify that their difference from unity can be much smaller than would have been true in the absence of axion-matter couplings and so can therefore evade the experimental bounds., Comment: Version that will appear in the journal; typos corrected (updated formulae for PPN parameters); some new references. 20 pages, 2 figures

Effective theories describing black hole exteriors resemble open quantum systems inasmuch as many unmeasurable degrees of freedom beyond the horizon interact with those we can see. A solvable Caldeira-Leggett type model of a quantum field that mixes with many unmeasured thermal degrees of freedom on a shared surface was proposed in arXiv:2106.09854 to provide a benchmark against which more complete black hole calculations might be compared. We here use this model to test two types of field-theoretic approximation schemes that also lend themselves to describing black hole behaviour: Open EFT techniques (as applied to the fields themselves, rather than Unruh-DeWitt detectors) and mean-field methods. Mean-field methods are of interest because the effective Hamiltonians to which they lead can be nonlocal; a possible source for the nonlocality that is sometimes entertained as being possible for black holes in the near-horizon regime. Open EFTs compute the evolution of the field state, allowing discussion of thermalization and decoherence even when these occur at such late times that perturbative methods fail (as they often do). Effective theories describing black hole exteriors contain many open-system features due to the large number of gapless degrees of freedom that lie beyond reach across the horizon. A simple solvable Caldeira-Leggett type model of a quantum field interacting within a small area with many unmeasured thermal degrees of freedom was recently proposed in arXiv:2106.09854 to provide a toy model of this kind of dynamics against which more complete black hole calculations might be compared. We here compute the response of a simple Unruh-DeWitt detector (or qubit) interacting with a massless quantum field $\phi$ coupled to such a hotspot. Our treatment differs from traditional treatments of Unruh-DeWitt detectors by using Open-EFT tools to reliably calculate the qubit's late-time behaviour. We use these tools to determine the efficiency with which the qubit thermalizes as a function of its proximity to the hotspot. We identify a Markovian regime in which thermalization does occur, though only for qubits closer to the hotspot than a characteristic distance scale set by the $\phi$-hotspot coupling. Effective theories are being developed for fields outside black holes, often with an unusual open-system feel due to the influence of large number of degrees of freedom that lie out of reach beyond the horizon. What is often difficult when interpreting such theories is the absence of comparisons to simpler systems that share these features. We propose here such a simple model, involving a single external scalar field that mixes in a limited region of space with a `hotspot' containing a large number of hot internal degrees of freedom. Since the model is at heart gaussian it can be solved explicitly, and we do so for the mode functions and correlation functions for the external field once the hotspot fields are traced out. We compare with calculations that work perturbatively in the mixing parameter, and by doing so can precisely identify its domain of validity. We use effective field theory to compute the influence of nuclear structure on precision calculations of atomic energy levels. As usual, the EFT's effective couplings correspond to the various nuclear properties (such as the charge radius, nuclear polarizabilities, Friar and Zemach moments {\it etc.}) that dominate its low-energy electromagnetic influence on its surroundings. By extending to spinning nuclei the arguments developed for spinless ones in {\tt arXiv:1708.09768}, we use the EFT to show -- to any fixed order in $Z\alpha$ (where $Z$ is the atomic number and $\alpha$ the fine-structure constant) and the ratio of nuclear to atomic size -- that nuclear properties actually contribute to electronic energies through fewer parameters than the number of these effective nuclear couplings naively suggests. Our result is derived using a position-space method for matching effective parameters to nuclear properties in the EFT, that more efficiently exploits the simplicity of the small-nucleus limit in atomic systems. By showing that precision calculations of atomic spectra depend on fewer nuclear uncertainties than naively expected, this observation allows the construction of many nucleus-independent combinations of atomic energy differences whose measurement can be used to test fundamental physics (such as the predictions of QED) because their theoretical uncertainties are not limited by the accuracy of nuclear calculations. Nuclear-structure effects often provide an irreducible theory error that prevents using precision atomic measurements to test fundamental theory. We apply newly developed effective field theory tools to Hydrogen atoms, and use them to show that (to the accuracy of present measurements) all nuclear finite-size effects (e.g. the charge radius, Friar moments, nuclear polarizabilities, recoil corrections, Zemach moments {\it etc.}) only enter into atomic energies through exactly two parameters, independent of any nuclear-modelling uncertainties. Since precise measurements are available for more than two atomic levels in Hydrogen, this observation allows the use of precision atomic measurements to eliminate the theory error associated with nuclear matrix elements. We apply this reasoning to the seven atomic measurements whose experimental accuracy is smaller than 10 kHz to provide predictions for nuclear-size effects whose theoretical accuracy is not subject to nuclear-modelling uncertainties and so are much smaller than 1 kHz. Furthermore, the accuracy of these predictions can improve as atomic measurements improve, allowing precision fundamental tests to become possible well below the 'irreducible' error floor of nuclear theory., 5 pages, 2 tables; This paper summarizes our results from arXiv:2008.09718

The lecture notes presented in this chapter provide an introduction to inflationary cosmology with an emphasis on some of the ways effective field theories (EFTs) are used in its analysis. Topics covered in the chapter include introduction to cosmological backgrounds and fluctuations, including a brief discussion of inflationary models; general relativity as an effective theory; new issues raised by cosmology for EFTs, such as time-dependent backgrounds; and power-counting in cosmological EFTs. It also discusses issues surrounding the existence in the universe of both dark matter and dark energy, and the broader controversial question of their existence. It touches on the Hot Big Bang theory of cosmology, and the various types of particles believed to be 'elementary' at the temperatures of interest.

The attractive inverse square potential arises in a number of physical problems such as a dipole interacting with a charged wire, the Efimov effect, the Calgero-Sutherland model, near-horizon black hole physics and the optics of Maxwell fisheye lenses. Proper formulation of the inverse-square problem requires specification of a boundary condition (regulator) at the origin representing short-range physics not included in the inverse square potential and this generically breaks the Hamiltonian’s continuous scale invariance in an elementary example of a quantum anomaly. The system’s spectrum qualitatively changes at a critical value of the inverse-square coupling, and we here point out that the transition at this critical potential strength can be regarded as an example of a PT symmetry breaking transition. In particular, we use point particle effective field theory (PPEFT), as developed by Burgess et al [1], to characterize the renormalization group (RG) evolution of the boundary coupling under rescalings. While many studies choose boundary conditions to ensure the system is unitary, these RG methods allow us to systematically handle the richer case of nonunitary physics describing a source or sink at the origin (such as is appropriate for the charged wire or black hole applications). From this point of view the RG flow changes character at the critical inverse-square coupling, transitioning from a sub-critical regime with evolution between two real, unitary fixed points ( PT symmetric phase) to a super-critical regime with imaginary, dissipative fixed points ( PT symmetry broken phase) that represent perfect-sink and perfect-source boundary conditions, around which the flow executes limit-cycle evolution.

It is remarkable that the primordial fluctuations as revealed by the CMB coincide with what quantum fluctuations would look like if they were stretched across the sky by accelerated cosmic expansion. It has been observed that this same stretching also brings very small -- even trans-Planckian -- length scales up to observable sizes if extrapolated far enough into the past. This potentially jeopardizes later descriptions of late-time cosmology by introducing uncontrolled trans-Planckian theoretical errors into all calculations. Recent speculations, such as the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC), have been developed to avoid this problem. We revisit old arguments why the consistency of (and control over) the Effective Field Theory (EFT) governing late-time cosmology is not necessarily threatened by the descent of modes due to universal expansion, even if EFT methods may break down at much earlier times. Failure of EFT methods only poses a problem if late-time predictions rely on non-adiabatic behaviour at these early times (such as is often true for bouncing cosmologies, for example). We illustrate our arguments using simple non-gravitational examples such as slowly rolling scalar fields and the spacing between Landau levels for charged particles in slowly varying magnetic fields, for which similar issues arise and are easier to understand. We comment on issues associated with UV completions. Our arguments need not invalidate speculative ideas like the TCC but suggest they are not required by the present evidence., 13 pages

We apply point-particle effective field theory (PPEFT) to electronic and muonic 4He+ ions, and use it to identify linear combinations of spectroscopic measurements for which the theoretical uncertainties are much smaller than for any particular energy levels. The error is reduced because these combinations are independent of all short-range physics effects up to a given order in the expansion in the small parameters R/a_B and(Z alpha) (where R and a_B are the ion's nuclear and Bohr radii). In particular, the theory error is not limited by the precision with which nuclear matrix elements can be computed, or compromised by the existence of any novel short-range interactions, should these exist. These combinations of 4He+ measurements therefore provide particularly precise tests of QED. The restriction to 4He+ arises because our analysis assumes a spherically symmetric nucleus, but the argument used is more general and extendable to both nuclei with spin, and to higher orders in R/a_B and (Z alpha).

We argue that accidental approximate scaling symmetries are robust predictions of weakly coupled string vacua, and show that their interplay with supersymmetry and other (generalised) internal symmetries underlies the ubiquitous appearance of no-scale supergravities in low-energy 4D EFTs. We identify 4 nested types of no-scale supergravities, and show how leading quantum corrections can break scale invariance while preserving some no-scale properties (including non-supersymmetric flat directions). We use these ideas to classify corrections to the low-energy 4D supergravity action in perturbative 10D string vacua, including both bulk and brane contributions. Our prediction for the K\"ahler potential at any fixed order in $\alpha'$ and string loops agrees with all extant calculations. p-form fields play two important roles: they spawn many (generalised) shift symmetries; and space-filling 4-forms teach 4D physics about higher-dimensional phenomena like flux quantisation. We argue that these robust symmetry arguments suffice to understand obstructions to finding classical de Sitter vacua, and suggest how to get around them in UV complete models., Comment: v2: matches published version

Inflationary mechanisms for generating primordial fluctuations ultimately compute them as the leading contributions in a derivative expansion, with corrections controlled by powers of derivatives like the Hubble scale over Planck mass: $H/M_p$. At face value this derivative expansion breaks down for models with a small sound speed, $c_s$, to the extent that $c_s \ll 1$ is obtained by having higher-derivative interactions like $\mathfrak{L}_{\rm eff} \sim (\partial \Phi)^4$ compete with lower-derivative propagation. This concern arises more generally for models whose lagrangian is given as a function $P(X)$ for $X = -\partial_\mu \Phi \partial^\mu \Phi$ --- including in particular DBI models for which $P(X) \propto \sqrt{1-kX}$ --- since these keep all orders in $\partial \Phi$ while dropping $\partial^n \Phi$ for $n > 1$. We here find a sensible power-counting scheme for DBI models that gives a controlled expansion in powers of three types of small parameters: $H/M_p$, slow-roll parameters (possibly) and $c_s \ll 1$. We do not find a similar expansion framework for generic small-$c_s$ or $P(X)$ models. Our power-counting result quantifies the theoretical error for any prediction (such as for inflationary correlation functions) by fixing the leading power of these small parameters that is dropped when not computing all graphs (such as by restricting to the classical approximation); a prerequisite for meaningful comparisons with observations. The new power-counting regime arises because small $c_s$ alters the kinematics of free fluctuations in a way that changes how interactions scale at low energies, in particular allowing $1-c_s$ to be larger than derivative-measuring quantities like $(H/M_p)^2$., Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure

Though simple inflationary models describe the CMB well, their corrections are often plagued by infrared effects that obstruct a reliable calculation of late-time behaviour. We adapt to cosmology tools designed to address similar issues in other physical systems with the goal of making reliable late-time inflationary predictions. The main such tool is Open EFTs which reduce in the inflationary case to Stochastic Inflation plus calculable corrections. We apply this to a simple inflationary model that is complicated enough to have dangerous IR behaviour yet simple enough to allow the inference of late-time behaviour. We find corrections to standard Stochastic Inflationary predictions for the noise and drift, and we find these corrections ensure the IR finiteness of both these quantities. The late-time probability distribution, ${\cal P}(\phi)$, for super-Hubble field fluctuations are obtained as functions of the noise and drift and so these too are IR finite. We compare our results to other methods (such as large-$N$ models) and find they agree when these models are reliable. In all cases we can explore in detail we find IR secular effects describe the slow accumulation of small perturbations to give a big effect: a significant distortion of the late-time probability distribution for the field. But the energy density associated with this is only of order $H^4$ at late times and so does {\em not} generate a dramatic gravitational back-reaction., Comment: 23 pages plus appendices. v2 corrects typos in several formulae and adds several references

We critically assess a recent assertion (arXiv:1508.01124) concerning using delta-functions to analyze how higher-codimension branes back-react on their environment. We also briefly summarize the state of the art: describing how stress-energy balance dictates the components of off-brane stress energy in terms brane tension; how this can modify the standard tension/defect-angle relation for codimension-two sources when dilatons are present; and how it all relates to extra-dimensional searches for a small cosmological constant., 8 pages + appendix

These notes present a brief introduction to `naturalness' problems in cosmology, and to the Cosmological Constant Problem in particular. The main focus is the `old' cosmological constant problem, though the more recent variants are also briefly discussed. Several notions of naturalness are defined, including the closely related ideas of technical naturalness and `t Hooft naturalness, and it is shown why these naturally arise when cosmology is embedded within a framework --- effective field theories --- that efficiently captures what is consistent with what is known about the physics of smaller distances. Some care is taken to clarify conceptual issues, such as the relevance or not of quadratic divergences, about which some confusion has arisen over the years. A set of minimal criteria are formulated against which proposed solutions to the problem can be judged, and a brief overview made of the general limitations of most of the approaches. A somewhat more in-depth discussion is provided of what I view as the most promising approach. These notes are aimed at graduate students with a basic working knowledge of quantum field theory and cosmology, but with no detailed knowledge of particle physics.

One century after its formulation, Einstein's general relativity has made remarkable predictions and turned out to be compatible with all experimental tests. Most of these tests probe the theory in the weak-field regime, and there are theoretical and experimental reasons to believe that general relativity should be modified when gravitational fields are strong and spacetime curvature is large. The best astrophysical laboratories to probe strong-field gravity are black holes and neutron stars, whether isolated or in binary systems. We review the motivations to consider extensions of general relativity. We present a (necessarily incomplete) catalog of modified theories of gravity for which strong-field predictions have been computed and contrasted to Einstein's theory, and we summarize our current understanding of the structure and dynamics of compact objects in these theories. We discuss current bounds on modified gravity from binary pulsar and cosmological observations, and we highlight the potential of future gravitational wave measurements to inform us on the behavior of gravity in the strong-field regime., 188 pages, 46 figures, 6 tables, 903 references. The AMANDA neutrino telescope has been in operation at the South Pole since 1996. The present final array configuration, operational since 2000, consists of 677 photomultiplier tubes arranged in 19 strings, buried at depths between 1500 and 2000 m in the ice. The most recent results on a multi-year search for point sources of neutrinos will be shown. The study of events triggered in coincidence with the surface array SPASE and AMANDA provided a result on cosmic ray composition. Expected improvements from IceCube/IceTop will also be discussed.

The Amanda neutrino telescope at the South Pole has been taking data since 1996. Stepwise upgraded, it reached its final stage in January 2000. We present results from the search for extraterrestrial neutrinos, neutrinos from dark matter annihilation and magnetic monopoles.

We identify the lowest-dimension interaction which is possible between Standard Model brane fields and bulk scalars in 6 dimensions. The lowest-dimension interaction is unique and involves a trilinear coupling between the Standard Model Higgs and the bulk scalar. Because this interaction has a dimensionless coupling, it depends only logarithmically on ultraviolet mass scales and heavy physics need not decouple from it. We compute its influence on Higgs physics at ATLAS and identify how large a coupling can be detected at the LHC. Besides providing a potentially interesting signal in Higgs searches, such couplings provide a major observational constraint on 6D large-extra-dimensional models with scalars in the bulk., 20 pages

We analyze helioseismic waves near the solar equator in the presence of magnetic fields deep within the solar radiative zone. We find that reasonable magnetic fields can significantly alter the shapes of the wave profiles for helioseismic g modes. They can do so because the existence of density gradients allows g modes to resonantly excite Alfven waves, causing mode energy to be funneled along magnetic field lines, away from the solar equatorial plane. The resulting waveforms show comparatively sharp spikes in the density profiles at radii where these resonances take place. Such matter density waves with known spatial structure are substituted as a matter density noise into the 2×2 Schrodinger equation for νe,π neutrinos oscillating within the Sun. Then we reexamine the sensitivity of solar neutrino oscillations to noise in the solar interior using the best current estimates of neutrino properties. Our results show that the measurement of neutrino properties at KamLAND provides new information about fluctuations in the solar environment on scales to which standard helioseismology constraints are largely insensitive. We also show how the determination of neutrino oscillation parameters from a combined fit of KamLAND and solar data depends strongly on the magnitude of solar density fluctuations.

We investigate the possibility of self-tuning of the effective 4D cosmological constant in 6D supergravity, to see whether it could naturally be of order 1/r^4 when compactified on two dimensions having Kaluza-Klein masses of order 1/r. In the models we examine supersymmetry is broken by the presence of non-supersymmetric 3-branes (on one of which we live). If r were sub-millimeter in size, such a cosmological constant could describe the recently-discovered dark energy. A successful self-tuning mechanism would therefore predict a connection between the observed size of the cosmological constant, and potentially observable effects in sub-millimeter tests of gravity and at the Large Hadron Collider. We do find self tuning inasmuch as 3-branes can quite generically remain classically flat regardless of the size of their tensions, due to an automatic cancellation with the curvature and dilaton of the transverse two dimensions. We argue that in some circumstances six-dimensional supersymmetry might help suppress quantum corrections to this cancellation down to the bulk supersymmetry-breaking scale, which is of order 1/r. We finally examine an explicit realization of the mechanism, in which 3-branes are inserted into an anomaly-free version of Salam-Sezgin gauged 6D supergravity compactified on a 2-sphere with nonzero magnetic flux. This realization is only partially successful due to a topological constraint which relates bulk couplings to the brane tension, although we give arguments why these relations may be stable against quantum corrections., Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure. The nature of dark energy, which presently dominates the universal energy budget, remains a complete mystery. Models in which it is currently evolving tend to be overly sensitive to initial conditions, and necessarily involve a very light degree of freedom which is very difficult to obtain from realistic microscopic physics. This essay describes recent progress in understanding how the dark energy can arise as a residue of extra-dimensional gravitation, leading to new insights into how dark-energy cosmology might work. This picture produces dark energy dynamics within which couplings slowly run (or: 'walk') over cosmological times. It also has several unusual experimental predictions, including measurable modifications to Newton's Law on sub-millimeter scales and dramatic implications at next-generation collider experiments.

Inflationary cosmology has become central to our understanding of the initial conditions on whose foundations the current successes of the Hot Big Bang model rest. This is despite the well-known difficulties in finding systems whose dynamics naturally provide all of the features which successful inflation demands. Although string theory provides our best description of the physics of the relevant energy scales, it has only recently begun to shed insight into what the inflationary dynamics might be: the physics of brane-antibrane collisions. This essay is meant to summarize the difficulties which have blocked this realization until now, as well as the new insights about inflation which are now beginning to emerge.

We show that, for the transition between any two quantum Hall states, the semi-circle law and the existence of a duality symmetry follow solely from the consistency of the law of corresponding states with the two-dimensional scaling flow. This puts these two effects on a sound theoretical footing, implying that both should hold exactly at zero temperature, independently of the details of the microscopic electron dynamics. This derivation also shows how the experimental evidence favours taking the two-dimensional flow seriously for the whole transition, and not just near the critical points., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, typeset in LaTeX (uses revtex)

In their seminal work, Vanquickenborne and van Tiggelen proposed that the position of the lifted flame in a jet of fuel is that at which the turbulence characteristics give rise to a burning velocity on the stoichiometric contour equal to the incident mean velocity. Moreover, this burning velocity is just that of a premixed flame under the same turbulent conditions. Some objections to this approach are that it does not take account of the large eddy structures in the jet, nor of the intermittency of the turbulence in some regions where flame is stabilized. Recent imaging studies and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results indicate that in fact the flame propagates around the periphery of the large eddies. In the intermittent region, these are often too fuel-rich in their core to be flammable. The present study takes a large number of experimental results from the literature and uses empirical functions to describe the self-similarity laws for jets, including the intermittency, in order to estimate the turbulence and convection velocities associated with the large eddies. These parameters are computed on the time-averaged contour of maximum laminar burning velocity at the heights where the flames were observed to stabilize. Premixed turbulent burning velocities based on these conditions are then computed from recent correlations in the literature and compared with the convection velocities, which are the inferred turbulent burning velocities for this situation. It is found that, when the jet exit velocities are high enough for the flame to stabilize more than 20 jet diameters downstream, the ratio of the predicted to the experimentally inferred burning velocity is 1.7 ± 0.7. This is consistent with a premixed burning hypothesis for the large eddies if the random direction of propagation associated with the large eddies is recognized.

Closed forms are derived for the effective actions for free, massive spinless fields in anti-de Sitter space-times in arbitrary dimensions. The results have simple expressions in terms of elementary functions (for odd dimensions) or multiple Gamma functions (for even dimensions). We use these to argue against the quantum validity of Cruz' recently proposed duality relating such theories with differing masses and cosmological constants.PACS Nos. 11.10- z, 11.90+ t, and 04.60-m.

We show that if the string scale is identifed with the intermediate scale, $M_s=\sqrt{M_W M_{Planck}} \sim 10^{11}$ GeV, then the notorious hierarchy, $M_W/M_{Planck} \sim 10^{-16}$, can be explained using only $M_c/M_s \sim 0.01 \sim \alpha_{GUT} $ as small input parameters, where $M_c$ is the compactification scale. This is possible for weakly-coupled Type-I open-string vacua if the observed world is assumed to live in an N=1 supersymmetric 3-brane sector coupled to a separate, hidden, 3-brane world which breaks supersymmetry, because for such a model $M_W/M_{Planck} = 1/2 \alpha_{GUT}^2 (M_c/M_s)^6$. We discuss some of the phenomenological issues presented by such an intermediate-scale string, showing that its benefits include: (i) the possibility of logarithmic gauge-coupling unification of the SM couplings at $M_s$; (ii) a natural axionic solution to the strong-CP problem with a phenomenologically-acceptable Peccei-Quinn scale; (iii) experimentally-interesting neutrino masses, and more., Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, no figures

It has been proposed that the effective Hamiltonian describing high ${T}_{c}$ superconductivity in cuprate materials has an approximate SO(5) symmetry relating the superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) phases of these systems. We show that robust consequences of this proposal are potentially large optical conductivities and Raman scattering rates in the AF phase, due to the electromagnetic response of the doubly charged pseudo Goldstone bosons which must exist there. This provides potentially strong constraints on the properties of the bosons, such as their mass gap and velocity, at any given value of the doping.

We set up the effective field theories which describe the SO(5)-invariant picture of the high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates in various regimes. We use these to get quantitative conclusions concerning the size of SO(5) breaking effects. We consider two applications in detail: (i) the thermodynamic free energy, which describes the phase diagram and critical behavior, and (ii) the Lagrangian governing the interactions of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons with each other and with the electron quasiparticles deep within the ordered phases. We use these effective theories to obtain predictions for the critical behavior near the possible bicritical point and the pseudo-Goldstone boson dispersion relations, as well as some preliminary results concerning their contribution to response functions. We systematically identify which predictions are independent of the microscopic details of the underlying electron dynamics, and which depend on more model-dependent assumptions.

We compute the next-to-leading $O(m{\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{5})$ contribution to the hyperfine splitting in positronium within the framework of nonrelativistic QED (NRQED). When applied to the ground state, our calculation reproduces the known result, providing a further test of NRQED techniques. In addition to providing a very simple method of calculation of this standard result, we also obtain new expressions for excited states of positronium with negligible additional effort. Our calculation requires the complete next-to-leading matching of the lowest-dimension NRQED four-Fermi couplings.

We propose a general mechanism for stabilizing the dilaton against runaway to weak coupling. The method is based on features of the effective superpotential which arise for supersymmetric gauge theories which are not asymptotically free. Consideration of the 2PI effective action for bilinear operators of matter and gauge superfields allows one to overcome the obstacles to constructing a nonvanishing superpotential., 14 pages, (typos corrected and reference added)

We analyze LEP and SLC data from the 1995 Winter Conferences for signals of new physics. We compare the data with the Standard Model (SM) as well as a number of test hypotheses concerning the nature of new physics: (i) nonstandard Zbb couplings, (ii) nonstandard Zff couplings for the entire third generation, (iii) nonstandard oblique corrections, (iv) nonstandard lepton couplings, (v) general nonstandard W and Z couplings to all fermions, as well as combinations of the above. In most of our analyses, we leave the SM variables $\alpha_s$ and $m_t$ as free parameters to see how the various types of new physics can affect their inferred values. We find that the best fit ($\chi^2/d.o.f. = 8.4/10$) is obtained for the nonstandard Zbb couplings, which also give a `low' value (0.112) for $\alpha_s$. The SM also gives a good description of the Z data, having $\chi^2/d.o.f. = 12.4/12$. If $\alpha_s$ is held fixed to the low-energy value 0.112, then we find that a combination of the nonstandard Zbb couplings is fit to lie more than four standard deviations away from zero., Comment: Plain TeX, 9 pages, one figure (uuencoded), and 8 tables

We investigate the possibility of producing neutrinoless double beta decay without having an electron neutrino with a mass in the vicinity of 1 eV. We do so by having a much lighter electron neutrino mix with a much heavier (m > 1 GeV) sterile neutrino. We study the constraints on the masses and mixings of such heavy sterile neutrinos from existing laboratory, astrophysical and cosmological information, and discuss the properties it would require in order to produce a detectable signal in current searches for neutrinoless double beta decay., (We have revised somewhat our discussion of nucleosynthesis and laboratory bounds, and have modified figure 3 accordingly. We live at a time of contradictory messages about how successfully we understand gravity. General Relativity seems to work very well in the Earth's immediate neighborhood, but arguments abound that it needs modification at very small and/or very large distances. This essay tries to put this discussion into the broader context of similar situations in other areas of physics, and summarizes some of the lessons which our good understanding of gravity in the solar system has for proponents for its modification over very long and very short distances. The main message is that effective theories, in the technical sense of `effective', provide the natural language for testing proposals, and so are also effective in the colloquial sense.

Using the recently discovered connection between bosonization and duality transformations (hep-th/9401105 and hep-th/9403173), we give an explicit path-integral representation for the bosonization of a massive fermion coupled to a U(1) gauge potential (such as electromagnetism) in d space (D=d+1 spacetime) dimensions. The bosonic theory is described by a rank d-1 antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond-type gauge potential. We construct the bosonized lagrangian explicitly in the limit of large fermion mass. We find that the resulting action is local for d=2 (and given by a Chern-Simons action), but nonlocal for d larger than 3. By coupling to a statistical Chern-Simons field for d=2, we obtain a bosonized formulation of anyons. The contribution to precision electroweak measurements due to TeV physics which couples primarily to the W ± and Z bosons may be parameterized in terms of the three ‘oblique correction’ parameters, S, T and U. We extend this parameterization to physics at much lower energies, > 100 GeV, and show that in this more general case neutral-current experiments are sensitive to only two additional parameters. A third new parameter enters into the W ± width. The standard electroweak theory has recently come of age, with experiments now probing its predictions with sufficient accuracy to test its r corrections in some detail. Besides providing a detailed test of the model, these precision measurements are also very useful for the constraints they impose on any potential new physics that might exist at energies higher than those that have been hitherto experimentally explored. The solar neutrino problem, atmospheric neutrino problem, and the existence of hot dark matter can all be economically accounted for using only the three known neutrinos if these neutrinos all have nearly degenerate masses of a few eV. An old result ({\tt astro-ph/9905303}) by Jacobson implies that a black hole with Schwarzschild radius $r_s$ acquires scalar hair, $Q \propto r_s^2 \mu$, when the (canonically normalized) scalar field in question is slowly time-dependent far from the black hole, $\partial_t \phi \simeq \mu M_p$ with $\mu r_s \ll 1$ time-independent. Such a time dependence could arise in scalar-tensor theories either from cosmological evolution, or due to the slow motion of the black hole within an asymptotic spatial gradient in the scalar field. Most remarkably, the amount of scalar hair so induced is independent of the strength with which the scalar couples to matter. We argue that Jacobson's Miracle Hair-Growth Formula${}^\copyright$ implies, in particular, that an orbiting pair of black holes can radiate {\em dipole} radiation, provided only that the two black holes have different masses. Quasar OJ 287, situated at redshift $z \simeq 0.306$, has been argued to be a double black-hole binary system of this type, whose orbital decay recently has been indirectly measured and found to agree with the predictions of General Relativity to within 6%. We argue that the absence of observable scalar dipole radiation in this system yields the remarkable bound $|\,\mu| < (16 \, \hbox{days})^{-1}$ on the instantaneous time derivative at this redshift (as opposed to constraining an average field difference, $\Delta \phi$, over cosmological times), provided only that the scalar is light enough to be radiated --- i.e. $m \lsim 10^{-23}$ eV --- independent of how the scalar couples to matter. This can also be interpreted as constraining (in a more model-dependent way) the binary's motion relative to any spatial variation of the scalar field within its immediate vicinity within its host galaxy., Comment: 20 pages

Transitions among quantum Hall plateaux share a suite of remarkable experimental features, such as semi-circle laws and duality relations, whose accuracy and robustness are difficult to explain directly in terms of the detailed dynamics of the microscopic electrons. They would naturally follow if the low-energy transport properties were governed by an emergent discrete duality group relating the different plateaux, but no explicit examples of interacting systems having such a group are known. Recent progress using the AdS/CFT correspondence has identified examples with similar duality groups, but without the DC ohmic conductivity characteristic of quantum Hall experiments. We use this to propose a simple holographic model for low-energy quantum Hall systems, with a nonzero DC conductivity that automatically exhibits all of the observed consequences of duality, including the existence of the plateaux and the semi-circle transitions between them. The model can be regarded as a strongly coupled analog of the old `composite boson' picture of quantum Hall systems. Non-universal features of the model can be used to test whether it describes actual materials, and we comment on some of these in our proposed model., LaTex 52 pages 11 figures. Observations of pulsar timing provide strong constraints on scalar-tensor theories of gravity, but these constraints are traditionally quoted as limits on the microscopic parameters (like the Brans-Dicke coupling, for example) that govern the strength of scalar-matter couplings at the particle level in particular models. Here we present fits to timing data for several pulsars directly in terms of the phenomenological couplings (masses, scalar charges, moment of inertia sensitivities and so on) of the stars involved, rather than to the more microscopic parameters of a specific model. For instance, for the double pulsar PSR J0737-3039A/B we find at the 68% confidence level that the masses are bounded by 1.28 < m_A/m_sun < 1.34 and 1.19 < m_B/m_sun < 1.25, while the scalar-charge to mass ratios satisfy |a_A| < 0.21, |a_B| < 0.21 and |a_B - a_A| < 0.002$. These constraints are independent of the details of the scalar tensor model involved, and of assumptions about the stellar equations of state. Our fits can be used to constrain a broad class of scalar tensor theories by computing the fit quantities as functions of the microscopic parameters in any particular model. For the Brans-Dicke and quasi-Brans-Dicke models, the constraints obtained in this manner are consistent with those quoted in the literature., 19 pages, 7 figures

Massless interacting scalar fields in de Sitter space have long been known to experience large fluctuations over length scales larger than Hubble distances. A similar situation arises in condensed matter physics in the vicinity of a critical point, and in this better-understood situation these large fluctuations indicate the failure in this regime of mean-field methods. We argue that for non-Goldstone scalars in de Sitter space, these fluctuations can also be interpreted as signaling the complete breakdown of the semi-classical methods widely used throughout cosmology. By power-counting the infrared properties of Feynman graphs in de Sitter space we find that for a massive scalar interacting through a \lambda \phi^4$ interaction, control over the loop approximation is lost for masses smaller than m \simeq \sqrt \lambda H/2\pi, where H is the Hubble scale. Precision tests of gravity can be used to constrain the properties of hypothetical very light scalar fields, but these tests depend crucially on how macroscopic astrophysical objects couple to the new scalar field. We develop quasi-analytic methods for solving the equations of stellar structure using scalar-tensor gravity, with the goal of seeing how stellar properties depend on assumptions made about the scalar coupling at a microscopic level. We illustrate these methods by applying them to Brans-Dicke scalars, and their generalization in which the scalar-matter coupling is a weak function of the scalar field. The four observable parameters that characterize the fields external to a spherically symmetric star (the stellar radius, R, mass, M, scalar `charge', Q, and the scalar's asymptotic value, phi_infty) are subject to two relations because of the matching to the interior solution, generalizing the usual mass-radius, M(R), relation of General Relativity. We identify how these relations depend on the microscopic scalar couplings, agreeing with earlier workers when comparisons are possible. Explicit analytical solutions are obtained for the instructive toy model of constant-density stars, whose properties we compare to more realistic equations of state for neutron star models., Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures

Motivated by recent experimental claims for the existence of a 17 keV neutrino and by the solar neutrino problem, we construct a class of models which contain in their low-energy spectrum a single light sterile neutrino and one or more Nambu-Goldstone bosons. In these models the required pattern of breaking of lepton-number symmetry takes place near the electroweak scale and all mass heirarchies are technically natural. The models are compatible with all cosmological and astrophysical constraints, and can solve the solar neutrino problem via either the MSW effect or vacuum oscillations. The deficit in atmospheric muon neutrinos seen in the Kamiokande and IMB detectors can also be explained in these models., Comment: 23 pages

It is widely believed that existing electroweak data requires a Standard Model Higgs to be light while electroweak and flavour physics constraints require other scalars charged under the Standard Model gauge couplings to be heavy. We analyze the robustness of these beliefs within a general scalar sector and find both to be incorrect, provided that the scalar sector approximately preserves custodial symmetry and minimal flavour violation (MFV). We demonstrate this by considering the phenomenology of the Standard Model supplemented by a scalar having SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y quantum numbers (8,2)_(1/2) which has been argued to be the only kind of exotic flavour singlet scalar allowed by MFV that couples to quarks. We examine constraints coming from electroweak precision data, direct production from LEPII and the Tevatron, and from flavour physics, and find that the observations allow both the Standard Model Higgs and the new scalars to be simultaneously light, with masses ~ 100 GeV, and in some cases lighter. The discovery of such light coloured scalars could be a compelling possibility for early LHC runs, due to their large production cross section, ~100 pb. But the observations equally allow all the scalars to be heavy (including the Higgs), with masses ~ 1 TeV, with the presence of the new scalars removing the light-Higgs preference that normally emerges from fits to the electroweak precision data., 38 pages, 13 figures V3 final JHEP version

Perturbative corrections to correlation functions for interacting theories in de Sitter spacetime often grow secularly with time, due to the properties of fluctuations on super-Hubble scales. This growth can lead to a breakdown of perturbation theory at late times. We argue that Dynamical Renormalization Group (DRG) techniques provide a convenient framework for interpreting and resumming these secularly growing terms. In the case of a massless scalar field in de Sitter with quartic self-interaction, the resummed result is also less singular in the infrared, in precisely the manner expected if a dynamical mass is generated. It is widely believed that the WKB approximation to quantum barrier penetration is described in the path‐integral formalism by a saddle‐point approximation based on an expansion about an imaginary‐time semiclassical path. This article examines the relationship between tunneling amplitudes and imaginary‐time paths. It is shown, using a simple example, that for some tunneling amplitudes the dominant semiclassical path cannot be chosen to have purely imaginary time if all other variables are chosen to be real.
