Paleointensity measurements have been carried out on 3.5 Ga samples from the Komati Formation type locality using both the Thellier and Van Zijl methods. These samples contain a single steeply-directed negative TRM component acquired during metamorphism of the Komati lavas. Thellier experiments yielded values ranging from 12 to 37 μT but an average paleofield intensity for the four best determinations is 20 ± 3 μT. A slightly lower average paleointensity of 15 ± 3 μT was obtained using Van Zijl experiments. Preheating was used to chemically stabilize seven samples used in Van Zijl determinations and these produced nearly ideal plots with an average paleointensity of 13 ± 2 μT. A single basaltic komatiite sample gave a nearly ideal Van Zijl plot indicating about 21 μT, nearly the same paleointensity as the peridotitic komatiite samples even though its NRM intensity was several orders of magnitude lower. Since the Komati characteristic remanence was acquired during a slow cooling, the data must be reduced by a factor of 1.55 to account for the difference between laboratory and natural cooling rates. Calculation of an equivalent equatorial paleointensity using the paleolatitude implied by the steep Komati characteristic remanence then gives value of 5 μT for the intensity of the geomagnetic field at 3.5 Ga, lower than the present value of about 30 μT.

Fifteen isolates of feline caliciviruses (picornaviruses) from Britain, the United States, and Australia have been compared with feline herpesvirus in their pathogenicity for SPF kittens in a gnotobiotic-type isolator system. Some isolates were apparently non-pathogenic, but the typical disease displayed transient fever, lingual ulcers, depressed appetite, and mild ocular and nasal discharge. Symptoms with the feline herpesvirus were more marked, but in no case was a disease comparable to that seen in the field produced. Pathologically at least 3 of the caliciviruses produced an interstitial pneumonia.

We report opaque mineralogical observations and magnetic properties of primary titanomagnetites in Tertiary submarine gabbros from DSDP, Legs 30 and 37 and in a late Archean, continental granitic pluton, the Shelley Lake granite. The titanomagnetites and silicates in all the submarine gabbros have been deuterically oxidized. There is no indication of subsequent low-temperature oxidation, although serpentization of olivines is pervasive in the deeper Leg 37 units. The Leg 30 samples, from a single thick sill, contain abundant coarse (≈100 μm) titanomagnetites with fully developed ilmenite exsolution lamellae. Curie temperatures are 515–550°C; there are no low Curie temperatures that would indicate surviving unoxidized titanomagnetite. The unserpentinized Leg 37 gabbros contain scarce opaques with pure magnetite Curie points that are barely resolvable microscopically; most occur as inclusions in pyroxene. In the Shelley Lake granite, on the other hand, many samples exhibit bimodal blocking-temperature spectra, with blocking temperature peaks at 250–300°C and 550–575°C. The low-blocking-temperature phase is unidentified. No pyrrhotite was seen in thin section. Optically homogeneous grains coexist with fully exsolved neighbours, but the electron microprobe indicates no titanium. The lamellae appear to be haematite, not ilmenite, and the primary composition of the opaques is pure magnetite. The oxidation state of the opaques is very inhomogeneous, even on a fine scale.
