The etching mechanism of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films in Cl2/Ar plasma was investigated through the analysis of gas mixing ratio on volume and surface chemistries. Experiments showed that PZT etch rate keeps a constant value up to 40% of Ar addition into Cl2/Ar plasma. Langmuir probe measurement showed the noticeable influence of Cl2/Ar mixing ratio on electron temperature and electron density. The modeling of volume kinetics for neutral and charged particles indicated monotonic changes of both densities and fluxes of active species such as chlorine atoms and positive ions. The analysis of surface kinetics showed that PZT etch rate behavior may be explained by the combination of spontaneous and ion-assisted etch mechanisms.

This study has evaluated the effect of fertilization-promoting peptide (FPP) on the fertilizing ability and glycosidase activity in vitro of frozen-thawed boar spermatozoa. Use of chlortetracycline (CTC) fluorescence analysis, as well as various glycosidase analyses and the oocyte penetration test showed that FPP can promote the fertilizing ability and glycosidase activity of frozen-thawed spermatozoa in vitro. There were significantly (P < 0.05) more acrosome-reacted and penetrated in medium with 100 nM FPP than with 0, 50, 200 or 400 nM. The beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase (beta-GlcNAcase) activity was at least two-fold higher than other glycosidase regardless of FPP concentrations. In the same glycosidase, there were no differences in medium with different concentrations of FPP. The percentages of spermatozoa that reached acrosome reaction were affected by different periods (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 h) of spermatozoa preincubation and were higher in medium with than without FPP. Penetration rates were decreased with preincubation periods of spermatozoa when oocytes were inseminated with spermatozoa preincubated in medium with and without FPP for the different periods. These rates were higher in spermatozoa preincubated with that than without FPP and had a tendency to increase as time of culture periods when the sperm-oocyte were cultured for 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 or 24 h. The activities of alpha-fucosidase, alpha-mannosidase, beta-galactosidase and beta-GlcNAcase were higher in medium with that than without FPP regardless of periods of sperm preincubation and sperm-oocyte culture. These results suggest that FPP may have a positive role in promoting sperm function and glycosidase activity in the pig.

The focus of this paper is the development of a thermal, finite difference numerical model to describe one-dimensional upward flame spread on practical wall materials. Practical materials include composite materials and those that char, in addition to clean burning, homogeneous materials. A set of equations used in the model is developed and the methods for obtaining necessary “fire properties” are discussed. Some of the particular features of the model include the use of a correlation for flame heat feedback and the use of an experimentally measured mass loss rate to incorporate the burning characteristics of practical materials. A comparison of the numerical predictions with the experimental results for flame heights and temperatures are shown for Douglas fir particle board. The model correctly predicts trends but underpredicts the flame heights and pyrolysis height in the cases tested. Two additional cases are shown for materials for which experimentally measured heat release rate data are used in place of the mass loss rate data. The flame and pyrolysis height predictions are in much better agreement for these cases. Further efforts to obtain material property data that is appropriate for flame spread modeling is indicated by this work.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on pronucleus formation in porcine oocytes fertilized in vitro by frozen-thawed spermatozoa. No differences were found in penetration rates when SOD was added to maturation or fertilization medium at any level tested in first and second experiments. Pronucleus formation rates were higher (P < 0.05) when SOD at 10 and 100 units was added to the maturation medium (46 and 53%, respectively) compared with the controls (26%). On the other hand, when the fertilization medium was supplemented with SOD at different concentrations (1, 10 and 100 units/ml), pronucleus formation rates (55, 52 and 50%) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in the control group. In third experiment, the oocytes were cultured in medium with (1 unit/ml) or without SOD for 8, 16, 24 and 32 h after insemination. The penetration rates had a tendency to increase as time of sperm-oocyte culture was prolonged. No significant differences, however, were observed in penetration rates between groups with and without SOD. On the other hand, the pronucleus formation rates were higher in medium with than without SOD at 8 (7 vs 0%), 16 (14 vs 3%), 24 (48 vs 16%; P < 0.01) and 32 h (49 vs 22%; P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate the advantage of culture with SOD on pronucleus formation in porcine oocytes penetrated by spermatozoa. However, SOD does not affect penetration rates and polyspermy.

Conduction heat transfer into a vertical free burning slab was measured as a function of time and distance from the leading edge, and its contribution to the known values of effective heat of gasification was analyzed. The present set of experiments was performed using clear and black PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) samples. The heat conduction into the pyrolyzing surface was deduced from temperature measurements in the interior of burning slabs. The surface conduction heat flux decreased from 14 kW/m2 for clear PMMA and 13kW/m for black PMMA at t = 300s to almost 8kW/m2 at around l = 1000s and then reached a plateau, indicating a substantial degree of unsteadiness in the early part of combustion of slabs. It is concluded that, when estimating burning rates in numerical calculations one has to be careful in selecting a value for the effective heat of gasification because of the generally unsteady nature of heat conduction into the solid interior.

Neointimal formation, the leading cause of restenosis, is caused by proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Patients with diabetes mellitus have higher restenosis rates after coronary angioplasty than nondiabetic patients. Cilostazol, a selective type 3 phosphodiesterase inhibitor, is currently used to treat patients with diabetic vascular complications. Cilostazol is a potent antiplatelet agent that inhibits VSMC proliferation. In the present study, we examine whether the antiproliferative effect of cilostazol on VSMCs is mediated by inhibition of an important cell cycle transcription factor, E2F. Cilostazol inhibited the proliferation of human VSMCs in response to high glucose in vitro and virtually abolished neointimal formation in rats subjected to carotid artery injury in vivo. Moreover, the compound suppressed high-glucose–induced E2F–DNA binding activity, and the expression of E2F1, E2F2, cyclin A, and PCNA proteins. These data suggest that the beneficial effects of cilostazol on high-glucose–stimulated proliferation of VSMCs are mediated by the downregulation of E2F activity and expression of its downstream target genes, including E2F1, E2F2, cyclin A, and PCNA.

In the case of chemical active gas to be used for the etching of the material forming low-volatile reaction products, the etching result is affected by the chemical and physical factors together. Chemical factor is controlled by the fluxes of chemical active species (atoms, radicals) on the etched surface. Physical factor is represented by the sputter etching as well as by the ion-assisted etching through the ion-stimulated desorption of the reaction products.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome with Hirschsprung's disease, also known as Haddad syndrome, is an extremely rare disorder with variable symptoms. Recent studies described that congenital central hypoventilation syndrome had deep relation to the mutation of the PHOX2B gene in its diagnosis and phenotype. We report a newborn male infant with clinical manifestations of recurrent hypoventilation with hypercapnea and bowel obstruction. These clinical manifestations were compatible with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome and Hirschsprung's disease, and polyalanine 26 repeats in the PHOX2B gene supported the diagnosis of congenital central hypoventilation. We described a first case of Haddad syndrome in Korean and its clinical and genetic characteristics were discussed.

Genetic and biochemical approaches have contributed to an explosion of literature on cell-cycle control. Regulation of the cell-cycle is controlled by a series of kinases and phosphatases. Key control points are during the G1-S and G2-M transitions. During both transitions, cyclins interact with a specific kinase to allow a cell to pass through that phase. The meiotic maturation of oocytes, fertilization and embryo development are all events influenced by cell-cycle regulation. Understanding cell-cycle control should provide new ways for gamete and embryo biologists to approach culture and development problems.

Purpose: Severe aspiration of the amniotic fluid is known to cause fatal respiratory distress in neonates. We conducted this study to investigate the clinical findings of severe amniotic fluid aspiration pneumonia (AFAP) in neonates and the effect of pulmonary surfactant replacement therapy (SRT). Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records was conducted on 28 patients who received ventilator care due to severe AFAP in a neonatal intensive care unit over a 7-year period (2000-2006). Patients whose amniotic fluid was contaminated with meconium were excluded. Results: A large number of cases were term infants (82.1%) and infants born by caesarean section (85.7%), and the 1and 5-min Apgar scores of these patients were 6.5±1.2 and 7.5±1.3, respectively. Soon after birth, the amount of amniotic fluid sucked out from airway below the vocal cord was 16.0±10.1 mL. All patients received SRT with a modified bovine-derived surfactant (120 mg/kg/dose), and one dose was administered in most cases (75%). Compared with pre-SRT, the oxygenation index (8.0±9.6 vs. 18.9±7.3) according to ventilator care was a significant improvement at 12 h after SRT (P

normal infants serving as the control group. Results: A statistical difference was observed between the groups in birth weight and in vitro fertilization. The incidence of infants with SUA was 0.37%. Congenital malformations were observed in 21 infants with cardiovascular (n=15, 25.4%), gastrointestinal (n=2, 3.4%), genitourinary (n=9, 15.3%), neuromusculoskeletal (n=6, 10.2%), central nervous system (n=1, 1.7%), chromosomal (n=1, 1.7%), and other (n=3, 5.1%) abnormalities. There were 49 (83.1%) infants with isolated SUA in this study population; among them, the associated congenital malformations were cardiovascular (n=6, 12.2%) and genitourinary (n=6, 12.2%) abnormalities. Two infants with cyanotic heart disease were operated and four infants with acyanotic heart disease showed improvements without any treatment. Six infants with genitourinary abnormalities on renal ultrasound had mild hydronephrosis without further consequences. Conclusion: The incidence of structural abnormalities in the cardiovascular and genitourinary systems is high and the genitourinary anomalies associated with isolated SUA have relatively good prognosis. Purpose : Pneumothorax is an important factor responsible for increased mortality and morbidity in neonates. Here, we compared the clinical findings and prognosis for neonatal pneumothorax induced by respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and pneumonia. Methods : Between January 2001 and December 2005, 80 patients with neonatal pneumothorax induced by RDS and pneumonia and admitted to the NICU of Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung University, were enrolled. They were assigned to the RDS group (30 cases) or the pneumonia group (50 cases). Admission records for gestational age, onset day of life, rate of ventilatory care and thoracostomy, and prognosis were retrospectively reviewed and statistically analyzed for both groups. Results : The mean gestation age was significantly shorter in the RDS group (32.3 weeks) than in the pneumonia group (38.1 weeks) (P0.5) and the RDS group itself (OR 1.70, 95% CI: 0.52-5.54, P>0.3) did not increase mortality rates significantly. Conclusion : Our study suggests that neonatal pneumothorax in the RDS group tends to have a later onset, higher mortality rate, and needs a higher rate of thoracostomy than the pneumonia group. However, after logistic analysis, only preterm significantly and independently increased the mortality rate.

Purpose : This study compares the maternal characteristics and birth outcomes of infants of Asian immigrant mothers from developing countries with those of the infants of Korean mothers. Methods : In this multicenter and retrospective study, Asian immigrant women who had delivered between January 2005 and June 2008 were enrolled from9 Medical Centers. In all, 333 births to Asian immigrant women from developing coun- tries (Asian-Korean infants) were included in this study. In addition, sex-, birth year-, and gestational age-matched 333 neonates born to Korean mothers were selected as the control group (Korean infants). On the basis of the hospital data, we investigated the nationality, age, and medical history of the mothers and compared the incidence of congenital infec- tion, Apgar score, weight, height, and head circumference of Asian-Korean infants with those of the Korean infants. Differential Pattern in Plasma Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) Level in Neonatal Sepsis between Premature and Full-term Infants 1456

Results of a laboratory scale experimental study on the desulphurization of coal char by steam-methane mixtures are presented. The char was prepared from a high sulphur, medium volatile, bituminous coal. The variables studied were temperature and reacting gas composition. The concentration of sulphur, specific surface area, pore size distribution and char reactivity were determined before and after the desulphurization reaction. A significant amount of sulphur was removed when coal char was reacted with 3–20 mol% steam in steam-methane mixtures in the temperature range 703–823 K. Carbon gasification was effectively eliminated by this technique. Although small increases in both the specific surface area and pore volume occurred, the reactivity of the char was practically unaffected by the desulphurization reaction.
