Non‐Hodgkin orbital lymphoma (NHOL) and idiopathic orbital inflammation (IOI) are common orbital conditions with largely unknown pathophysiology that can be difficult to diagnose. In this study we aim to identify serum miRNAs associated with NHOL and IOI. We performed OpenArray ® miRNA profiling in 33 patients and controls. Differentially expressed miRNAs were technically validated across technology platforms and replicated in an additional cohort of 32 patients and controls. We identified and independently validated a serum miRNA profile of NHOL that was remarkably similar to IOI and characterized by an increased expression of a cluster of eight miRNAs. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated that the miRNA‐cluster is associated with immune‐mediated pathways, which we supported by demonstrating the elevated expression of this cluster in serum of patients with other inflammatory conditions. The cluster contained miR‐148a, a key driver of B‐cell tolerance, and miR‐365 that correlated with serum IgG and IgM concentrations. In addition, miR‐29a and miR‐223 were associated with blood lymphocyte and neutrophil populations, respectively. NHOL and IOI are characterized by an abnormal serum miRNA‐cluster associated with immune pathway activation and linked to B cell and neutrophil dysfunction., MicroRNA profiling in non‐Hodgkin orbital lymphoma and idiopathic orbital inflammation identified and independently replicated the increased expression of a pan‐inflammatory cluster of microRNAs accompanied by B cell and neutrophil dysfunction.

The development of scalable techniques to make two-dimensional (2D) material heterostructures is a major obstacle that needs to be overcome before these materials can be implemented in device technologies. Electrodeposition is an industrially compatible deposition technique that offers unique advantages in scaling 2D heterostructures. In this work, we demonstrate the electrodeposition of atomic layers of WS2 over graphene electrodes using a single source precursor. Using conventional microfabrication techniques, graphene was patterned to create micro-electrodes where WS2 was site-selectively deposited to form 2D heterostructures. We used various characterization techniques, including atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to show that our electrodeposited WS2 layers are highly uniform and can be grown over graphene at a controllable deposition rate. This technique to selectively deposit transition metal dichalcogenides over microfabricated graphene electrodes paves the way towards wafer-scale production of 2D material heterostructures for nanodevice applications.

We have systematically investigated the effects of hydrogen annealing on Ni- and Al-contacted carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs), whose work functions have not been affected by hydrogen annealing. Measured results show that the electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are modified by hydrogen adsorption. The Ni-contacted CNTFETs, which initially showed metallic behavior, changed their p-FET behavior with a high on-current over 10 µA after hydrogen annealing. The on-current of the as-made p-FETs is much improved after hydrogen annealing. The Al-contacted CNTFETs, which initially showed metallic behavior, showed unipolar p-FET behavior after hydrogen annealing. We analyzed the energy band diagrams of the CNTFETs to explain experimental results, finding that the electron affinity and the bandgap of single-walled carbon nanotubes changed after hydrogen annealing. These results are consistent with previously reported ab initio calculations.

BACKGROUND Severe postpartum hemorrhage (SPPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Platelet anomalies frequently occur during pregnancy. However, their role in the etiology of SPPH is largely unknown. OBJECTIVE To study the relation between platelet parameters and SPPH. METHODS This retrospective single-center cohort included deliveries between 2009 and 2017. SPPH was defined as ≥1000 ml blood loss within 24 h after delivery. Platelet parameters were measured within 72 h before delivery. Multiple imputation was performed for missing data. Odds ratios were adjusted (aORs) for maternal age, multiple gestation, macrosomia, induction of labor, preeclampsia, and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets syndrome. Structural color based on Fabry–Perot (F-P) cavity enables a wide color gamut with high resolution at submicroscopic scale by varying its geometrical parameters. The ability to design such parameters that can accurately display the desired color is therefore crucial to the manufacturing of F-P cavities for practical applications. This work reports the first inverse design of F-P cavity structure using deep learning through a bidirectional artificial neural network. It enables the production of a significantly wider coverage of color space that is over 215% of sRGB with extremely high accuracy, represented by an average Δ E 2000 value below 1.2. The superior performance of this structural color-based neural network is directly ascribed to the definition of loss function in the uniform CIE 1976-Lab color space. Over 100,000 times improvement in the design efficiency has been demonstrated by comparing the neural network to the metaheuristic optimization technique using an evolutionary algorithm when designing the famous painting of “Haystacks, end of Summer” by Claude Monet. Our results demonstrate that, with the correct selection of loss function, deep learning can be very powerful to achieve extremely accurate design of nanostructured color filters with very high efficiency.

We report the electrodeposition of bismuth telluride thin films on to titanium nitride (TiN) electrodes from a weakly coordinating solvent, dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ), using the halometallates, [N n Bu 4 ][BiCl 4 ] and [N n Bu 4 ] 2 [TeCl 6 ] with 0.1 M [N n Bu 4 ]Cl as the supporting electrolyte. The elemental composition of the electrodeposited films was found to be independent of the deposition potential between −0.6 and −2.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl but to be dependent on ratio of the concentrations of the Bi and Te precursors in the solution, with the amount of bismuth in the films increasing when the concentration of [N n Bu 4 ][BiCl 4 ] in solution was increased. All the electrodeposited films were found to be homogenous in composition across the electrode surface and to be reproducible in composition for replicate experiments. As the deposition potential was taken less negative, the morphology of the deposits changed from uniform films to films with a compact micro/nano particle structure as seen by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Using this system, the electrodeposition of crystalline Bi 2 Te 3 and Bi 4 Te 3 was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction.

Testosterone has effects on many organs and systems. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that low testosterone is associated with changes in various non-cardiovascular biomarkers in men older than 40 who were tested for possible hypogonadism. We extracted data from 9939 outpatient men who were over 40 years old (median age 56) and who also had concurrent laboratory measurements of total testosterone and one or more biomarkers of interest: estradiol, uric acid, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG), luteinizing hormone, creatinine, bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), creatine kinase, hemoglobin A1c, and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D, and body mass index (BMI). High-dielectric constant (high-k) gate oxides and low-dielectric constant (low-k) interlayer dielectrics (ILD) have dominated the nanoelectronic materials research scene over the past two decades, but they have recently reached a state of maturity and perhaps the limits of their scaling. Based on this, there is a need for a systematic review summarizing not only the historic research and achievements on high-k and low-k dielectrics, but also emerging device applications as well as an outlook of future challenges.We begin by first reviewing the factors that drove the emergence of low-k and high-k materials in nanoelectronics as ILD and gate dielectric materials, respectively, and the challenges and limits these materials ultimately approached in terms of permittivity scaling.We then illustrate that gate dielectric and ILD applications represent just a small fraction of the numerous dielectrics utilized in present day nanoelectronic products where permittivity scaling is now being increasingly demanded for materials such as dielectric spacers, trench isolation, and etch stopping layers. We conclude by examining the numerous new applications for dielectric materials that are emerging as the semiconductor industry transitions to novel patterning schemes, prepares for life post CMOS scaling, and explores ways to natively embed device functionality in the metal interconnect. For the former, we specifically examine the “colorful”requirements for the various enabling dielectric hard mask and spacer materials utilized in pitch division-multi-pattern processes and then discuss the role that selective area deposition of dielectrics and metals could play in reducing the complexity of such patterning processes. For the latter, we review the use of both high-k and low-k dielectrics in various metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures as Fermi level de-pinning layers, tunnel diodes, and back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible capacitive and resistive switching random access memory (ReRAM) elements.We further examine how dielectrics can hinder or aid new forms of computing such as quantum and neuromorphic in reaching their full potential. In conclusion, we find that while the field of dielectrics has a long history, it remains vibrant with numerous exciting new and old research vectors awaiting further exploration.© 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Memristor devices are crucial for developing neuromorphic computers and next-generation memory technologies. In this work, we provide a comprehensive modelling tool for simulating static DC reading operations of memristor crossbar arrays that use passive selectors with matrix algebra in MATLAB. The software tool was parallel coded and optimised to run with personal computers and distributed computer clusters with minimised CPU and memory consumption. We study the effect of changing the line resistance, array size, voltage selection scheme, selector diode’s ideality factor, reverse saturation current and sense resistance on the electrical behaviour and expected sense margin of a conventional one-diode-one-resistor crossbar arrays. We then investigate the effect of single- and dual-side array biasing and grounding on the dissipated current throughout the array cells. The tool we offer to the memristor community and the studies we present enable the design of larger and more practical memristor arrays for application in data storage and neuromorphic computing.

We have realized a new platform for multiplexing different spectral functionalities in a single meta-surface device using metal oxide plasmonics for infrared applications with very low cross-talk in the UV-Visible. Here we demonstrate the use of oxygen plasma patterning as a technique to selectively and locally modulate the carrier density in planar Al-doped ZnO (AZO) metasurfaces without any resulting surface topography. Using this approach, embedded metal oxide plasmonic metasurfaces are demonstrated for infrared applications with high transparency in the visible spectrum. By combining the embedded planar AZO metasurfaces with gold antenna metasurfaces, we realize a multiband visible-IR metasurface. We also demonstrate its performance as a metasurface optical solar reflector (OSR) for use in thermal control of spacecraft.

Plasmonic artificial molecules are promising platforms for linear and nonlinear optical modulation at various regimes including the visible, infrared and terahertz bands. Fano resonances in plasmonic artificial structures are widely used for controlling spectral lineshapes and tailoring of near-field and far-field optical response. Generation of a strong Fano resonance usually relies on strong plasmon coupling in densely packed plasmonic structures. Challenges in reproducible fabrication using conventional lithography significantly hinders the exploration of novel plasmonic nanostructures for strong Fano resonance. In this work, we propose a new class of plasmonic molecules with symmetric structure for Fano resonances, named evenly divided disk, which shows a strong Fano resonance due to the interference between a subradiant anti-bonding mode and a superradiant bonding mode. We successfully fabricated evenly divided disk structures with high reproducibility and with sub-20 nm gaps, using our recently developed sketch and peel lithography technique. The experimental spectra agree well with the calculated response, indicating the robustness of the Fano resonance for the evenly divided disk geometry. Control experiments reveal that the strength of the Fano resonance gradually increases when increasing the number of split parts on the disk from three to eight individual segments. The Fano-resonant plasmonic molecules that can also be reliably defined by our unique fabrication approach open up new avenues for application and provide insight into the design of artificial molecules for controlling light-matter interactions.

Nowadays, more trauma patients develop chronic critical illness (CCI), a state characterized by prolonged intensive care. Some of these CCI patients have disproportional difficulties to recover and suffer from recurrent infections, a syndrome described as the persistent inflammation, immunosuppression and catabolism syndrome (PICS). A total of 78 trauma patients with an ICU stay of &ge, 14 days (CCI patients) between 2007 and 2017 were retrospectively included. Within this group, PICS patients were identified through two ways: (1) their clinical course (&ge, 3 infectious complications) and (2) by laboratory markers suggested in the literature (C-reactive protein (CRP) and lymphocytes), both in combination with evidence of increased catabolism. The incidence of PICS was 4.7 per 1000 multitrauma patients. The sensitivity and specificity of the laboratory markers was 44% and 73%, respectively. PICS patients had a longer hospital stay (median 83 vs. 40, p &lt, 0.001) and required significantly more surgical interventions (median 13 vs. 3, p = 0.003) than other CCI patients. Thirteen PICS patients developed sepsis (72%) and 12 (67%) were readmitted at least once due to an infection. In conclusion, patients who develop PICS experience recurrent infectious complications that lead to prolonged hospitalization, many surgical procedures and frequent readmissions. Therefore, PICS forms a substantial burden on the patient and the hospital, despite its low incidence.

Optical solar reflectors (OSRs) play a crucial role in the spacecraft thermal management. We present novel OSRs based on planar or non-planar metal oxide metasurface. Fabricated meta-OSRs are shown to give superior emittance performance.

Introduction: Current guidelines advocate empirical antibiotic treatment (EAT) in haematological patients with febrile neutropenia. However, the optimal duration of EAT is unknown. In 2011, we have introduced a protocol, promoting discontinuation of carbapenems as EAT after three days in most patients and discouraging the standard use of vancomycin as EAT.[NF1] This study assesses the effect of this protocol on carbapenem and vancomycine use in high risk haematological patients and its safety.Methods: A retrospective before-after study was performed comparing a cohort from 2007 to 2011 (period I, before restrictive EAT use) with a cohort from 2011-2014 (period II, restrictive EAT use). Neutropenic episodes related to chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation (SCT) in patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) or high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) were analysed. The primary outcome was the use of carbapenems and vancomycin as EAT during neutropenia, expressed as days of therapy (DOT)/100 neutropenic days and analysed with interrupted time series (ITS). Also the use of other antibiotics was analysed to evaluate the overall antibiotic use[NF2] . Safety measurements included 30-day mortality, ICU admittance within 30 days after start of EAT and blood cultures positive for microorganisms sensitive to a carbapenem.Results: 362 neutropenic episodes with a median duration of 18 days were analysed, involving 201 patients. ITS analysis showed decreased carbapenem use with a step change of 16.1 DOT/100 neutropenic days (CI -26.73 to -1.41) and an overall reduction of 21.6% (8.7 DOT/100 neutropenic days). [NF3] Vancomycin use decreased with a step change of 13.7 DOT/100 neutropenic days (95% CI -23.66 to -2.90) and an overall reduction of 54.7% (14.6 DOT/100 neutropenic days). [NF4] There were no striking differences in other therapeutically used broad-spectrum antibiotics. No deaths were directly related to early discontinuation of EAT, also no notable difference in ICU-admission (n=9 in period I, n=9 in period II) and positive blood cultures (n=4 in period I, n=2 in period II) [NF5] was detected.Conclusion: The introduction of a protocol promoting restrictive use of EAT resulted in reduction of carbapenem and vancomycin use and appears to be safe in AML or high-risk MDS patients with febrile neutropenia during chemotherapy or SCT.

The inherently rapid ligand substitution kinetics associated with the novel and chemically compatible precursors, [MCl3(EnBu2)3] (M = Sb, Bi; E = Se, Te), enable CVD growth of ternary Bi2(Se1-xTex)3 and (Bi1-ySby)2Te3 thin films with very good compositional, structural and morphological control, for the first time. X-ray diffraction data follow Vegard’s law and Raman bands shift linearly with the atom substitutions, indicating very well-distributed solid solutions.

Surface-exposed uniformly doped silicon-on-insulator channels are fabricated to evaluate the accuracy of Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) measured surface potential and reveals the role of surface charge on the exposed channel operated in the ambient environment. First, the quality of the potential profile probed in the vacuum environment is assessed by the consistency of converted resistivity from KPFM result to the resistivity extracted by the other three methods. Second, in contrast to the simulated and vacuum surface potential profile and image, the ambient surface potential is bent excessively at the terminals of the channel. The excessive bending can be explained by the movement of surface charge under the drive of geometry induced strong local electric field from the channel and results in non-uniform distribution. The dynamic movement of surface charges is proved by the observation of time-dependent potential drift in the ambient measurement. The result suggests the surface charge effect should be taken into account of the measurement of the surface potential in the ambient environment and the design of charge sensitive devices whose surfaces are exposed to air or in ambient conditions in their operation.

Aims Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a complex multifactorial event and most commonly caused by ventricular tachycardia/ fibrillation (VT/ VF). Some antihypertensive drugs could induce hypokalaemia or hyperkalaemia, which may increase susceptibility to VT/VF and SCA. Objective To assess the association between different classes of antihypertensive drugs classified according to their potential impact on serum potassium levels and the occurrence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) based on VT/VF. Methods A case–control study was performed among current users of antihypertensive drugs. Cases were OHCA victims with electrocardiogram documented VT/VF drawn from the AmsteRdam REsuscitation STudies (ARREST) registry, and controls were non-OHCA individuals from the PHARMO database. Antihypertensive drugs were classified into: (i) antihypertensives with neutral effect on serum potassium levels; (ii) hypokalaemia-inducing antihypertensives; (iii) hyperkalaemia-inducing antihypertensives; (iv) combination of antihypertensives with hypo- and hyperkalaemic effects. Results We included 1345 cases and 4145 controls. The risk of OHCA was significantly increased among users of hypokalaemia-inducing antihypertensives [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.39; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10–1.76] and among users of a combination of antihypertensives with hypo- and hyperkalaemic effects (adjusted OR 1.42; 95%CI 1.17–1.72) vs. users of antihypertensives with neutral effect. There was no difference in OHCA risk between users of hyperkalaemia-inducing antihypertensives vs. users of antihypertensive drugs with neutral effect (adjusted OR 1.15; 95%CI 0.95–1.40). Conclusion The risk of OHCA is significantly increased in patients who were current users of hypokalaemia-inducing antihypertensives and patients using a combination of antihypertensives with hypo- and hyperkalaemic effects.

Simulation of total ionizing dose effects in field isolation of FET technologies requires transport mechanisms in the oxide to be considered. In this work, carrier transport and trapping in thick oxides using the finite elements method in the Synopsys Sentaurus platform are systematically simulated. Carriers are generated in the oxide and are transported out through a direct contact with the gate and thermionic emission to the silicon. Objective: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a multifactorial autoinflammatory disease with a historically poor prognosis. With current treatment regimens, approximately half of patients still experience active disease after 1 year of therapy. This study was undertaken to evaluate a treat-to-target approach using recombinant interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (rIL-1Ra; anakinra) as first-line monotherapy to achieve early inactive disease and prevent damage. Methods: In this single-center, prospective study, patients with new-onset systemic JIA with an unsatisfactory response to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs received rIL-1Ra monotherapy according to a treat-to-target strategy. Patients with an incomplete response to 2 mg/kg rIL-1Ra subsequently received 4 mg/kg rIL-1Ra or additional prednisolone, or switched to alternative therapy. For patients in whom inactive disease was achieved, rIL-1Ra was tapered after 3 months and subsequently stopped. Results: Forty-two patients, including 12 who had no arthritis at disease onset, were followed up for a median of 5.8 years. The median time to achieve inactive disease was 33 days. At 1 year, 76% had inactive disease, and 52% had inactive disease while not receiving medication. High neutrophil counts at baseline and a complete response after 1 month of rIL-1Ra were highly associated with inactive disease at 1 year. After 5 years of follow-up, 96% of the patients included had inactive disease, and 75% had inactive disease while not receiving medication. Articular or extraarticular damage was reported in

Background: Major surgery comes with a high risk for postoperative inflammatory complications. Preoperative risk scores predict mortality risk but fail to identify patients at risk for complications following cardiovascular surgery. We therefore assessed the value of preoperative red cell distribution width (RDW) as a predictor for pneumonia and sepsis after cardiovascular surgery and studied the relation of RDW with hematopoietic tissue activity. Methods: RDW is an easily accessible, yet seldomly used parameter from routine haematology measurements. RDW was extracted from the Utrecht Patient Orientated Database (UPOD) for preoperative measurements in patients undergoing open abdominal aortic anuerysm repair (AAA)(N = 136) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)(N = 2193). The cohorts were stratified in tertiles to assess effects over the different groups. Generalized Linear Models were used to determine associations between RDW and postoperative inflammatory complications. Hematopoietic tissue activity was scored using fluor-18-(18F)-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography and associated with RDW using linear regression models. Results: In total, 43(31.6%) and 73 patients (3.3%) suffered from inflammatory complications after AAA-repair or CABG, respectively; the majority being pneumonia in both cohorts. Postoperative inflammatory outcome incidence increased from 19.6% in the lowest to 48.9% in the highest RDW tertile with a corresponding risk ratio (RR) of 2.35 ([95%CI:1.08-5.14] P = 0.032) in AAA patients. In the CABG cohort, the incidence of postoperative inflammatory outcomes increased from 1.8% to 5.3% with an adjusted RR of 1.95 ([95%CI:1.02-3.75] P = 0.044) for the highest RDW tertile compared with the lowest RDW tertile. FDG-PET scans showed associations of RDW with tissue activity in the spleen (B = 0.517 [P = 0.001]) and the lumbar bone marrow (B = 0.480 [P = 0.004]). Conclusion: Elevated RDW associates with increased risk for postoperative inflammatory complications and hematopoietic tissue activity. RDW likely reflects chronic low-grade inflammation and should be considered to identify patients at risk for postoperative inflammatory complications following cardiovascular surgery.

The overwhelming amount, production speed, multidimensionality, and potential value of data currently available-often simplified and referred to as big data -exceed the limits of understanding of the human brain. At the same time, developments in data analytics and computational power provide the opportunity to obtain new insights and transfer data-provided added value to clinical practice in real time. What is the role of the health care professional in collaboration with the data scientist in the changing landscape of modern care? We discuss how health care professionals should provide expert knowledge in each of the stages of clinical decision support design: data level, algorithm level, and decision support level. Including various ethical considerations, we advocate for health care professionals to responsibly initiate and guide interprofessional teams, including patients, and embrace novel analytic technologies to translate big data into patient benefit driven by human(e) values.

We have recently reported a new method for the electrodeposition of thin film and nanostructured phase change memory (PCM) devices from a single, highly tuneable, non-aqueous electrolyte. The quality of the material was confirmed by phase cycling via electrical pulsed switching of both 100 nm nano-cells and thin film devices. This method potentially allows deposition into extremely small confined cells down to less than 5 nm, 3D lay-outs that require non-line-of-sight techniques, and seamless integration of selector devices. As electrodeposition requires a conducting substrate, the key condition for electronic applications based on this method is the use of patterned metal lines as the working electrode during the electrodeposition process. In this paper, we show the design and fabrication of a 2D passive memory matrix in which the word lines act as the working electrode and nucleation site for the growth of confined cells of Ge–Sb–Te. We will discuss the precursor requirement for deposition from non-aqueous, weakly coordinating solvents, show the transmission electron microscopy analysis of the electrodeposition growth process and elemental distribution in the deposits, and show the fabrication and characterisation of the Ge–Sb–Te memory matrix.

Thermoelectric generators are attractive for autonomous sensor systems where regular battery replacement would not only cause an increase in the maintenance costs and discontinuity in the operation, but also destroy the concept of a truly autonomous system. Micro-thermoelectric generators utilise thin films of material for energy harvesting which can greatly reduce the amount of material used, which is especially important for rare elements such as tellurium. Thin films of Bi2Te3 were successfully prepared via a single source precursor CVD method. The thermoelectric performance of these films is improved by alloying a Bi2Se3 precursor to deposit ternary Bi2Te3-xSex. The composition of the ternary system is tuned to optimise the combination of carrier concentration and mobility to give a three-fold enhancement of the thermoelectric power factor at 300 K, and six-fold enhancement at 500 K, with respect to Bi2Te3. This improvement from the substitution of Te with Se is believed to be due to donor effects, as well as point defects caused by this substitution.

Undoped ZnO thin films with tunable electrical properties have been achieved by adjusting the O2 plasma time in the plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition process. The structural, compositional and electrical properties of the deposited ZnO films were investigated by various characterization techniques. By tuning the plasma exposure from 2 to 8s, both resistivities and carrier concentrations of the resultant ZnO films can be modulated by up to 3 orders of magnitude. Forming-free TiN/ZnO/TiN resistive memory devices have been achieved by choosing the ZnO film with the plasma exposure time of 6s. This deposition method offers a great potential for producing other un-doped metal oxides with tunable properties as well as complex multilayer structures in a single deposition. Display Omitted

PURPOSE: Results from observational studies on the same exposure-outcome association may be inconsistent because of variations in methodological factors, clinical factors or health care systems. We evaluated the consistency of results assessing the association between antidepressant use and the risk of hip/femur fractures in three European primary care databases using two different study designs. METHODS: Cohort and nested case control studies were conducted in three European primary care databases (Spanish BIFAP, Dutch Mondriaan and UK THIN) to assess the association between use of antidepressants and hip/femur fracture. A common protocol and statistical analysis plan was applied to harmonize study design and conduct between data sources. RESULTS: Current use of antidepressants was consistently associated with a 1.5 to 2.5-fold increased risk of hip/femur fractures in all data sources with both designs, with estimates for SSRIs generally higher than those for TCAs. In general, risk estimates in Mondriaan, the smallest data source, were higher compared to the other data sources. This difference may be partially explained by an interaction between SSRI and age in Mondriaan. Adjustment for GP-recorded lifestyle factors and matching on general practice had negligible impact on adjusted relative risk estimates. CONCLUSION: We found a consistent increased risk of hip/femur fracture with current use of antidepressants across different databases and different designs. Applying similar pharmacoepidemiological study methods resulted in similar risks for TCA use and some variation for SSRI use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance and validity of the case-crossover (CCO) and self-controlled case-series (SCCS) designs when studying the association between hip/femur fracture (HF) and antidepressant (AD) use in general practitioner databases. In addition, comparability with cohort and case-control designs is discussed. Adult patients with HF and who received an AD prescription during 2001-2009 were identified from UK's The Health Improvement Network (THIN) and the Dutch Mondriaan databases. AD exposure was classified into current, recent and past/non-use (reference). In the CCO, for each patient, a case moment (date of HF) and four prior control moments at -91, -182, -273 and -365 days were defined. In SCCS, incidence of HF was compared between exposure states. Conditional logistic regression was used in the CCO and Poisson regression in the SCCS to compute odds ratios and incidence rate ratios, respectively. In CCO, we adjusted for time-varying co-medication and in SCCS for age. Adjusted estimates for the effect of current AD exposure on HF were higher in the CCO (co-medication-adjusted odds ratio, THIN: 2.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.04-2.47; Mondriaan: 2.57, 95%CI [1.50, 4.43]) than in the SCCS (age-adjusted incidence rate ratio, THIN: 1.41, 95%CI [1.32, 1.49]; Mondriaan: 2.14, 95%CI [1.51, 3.03]). The latter were comparable with the traditional designs. Case-only designs confirmed the association between AD and HF. The CCO design violated assumptions in this study with regard to exchangeability and length of exposure, and transient effects on outcome. The electrodeposition of MoS2 from dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) using tetrabutylammonium tetrathiomolybdate ([NnBu4]2[MoS4]) as a single source precursor is presented. The electrodeposition of MoS2 from CH2Cl2 requires addition of a proton donor to the electrolyte and trimethylammonium chloride (Me3NHCl) was used for this purpose. Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM) experiments have been employed for a detailed study of the electrochemical mechanism and to study the role of the proton donor. EQCM reveals cathodic electrodeposition of MoS2 and anodic deposition of MoS3 as well as an additional corrosion process where the deposited MoS3 strips back into solution. The electrodeposited MoS2 films are amorphous in nature. All the films were found to be homogeneous in composition across the electrode area and to be reproducible between experiments. Annealing of the as-deposited films under a sulfur atmosphere results in crystalline MoS2 as confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The deposited films were smooth and planar, as observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indicating a layer-by-layer growth typical of transition metal dichalogenides.

The thriving of the Internet of Things is set to increase the demand for low-power wireless sensing devices. Thin-film thermoelectric generators are ideal as a sustainable power source for Internet of Things devices as they allow for low maintenance and energy autonomy. This work presents a model to estimate the performance of a thin-film thermoelectric generator. Verified by finite-element method simulation, the results from the model show that increasing the interconnect electrical conductivity and reducing the device pitch increases the power density. The power density can also be increased by increasing the fill factor and reducing the thermal conductivity of the insulating materials. A new corrugated thin-film thermoelectric generator design is proposed in this work that allows for higher fill factors than conventional square designs where a limit on the minimum feature size is imposed, as is the case with photolithography.

Optical solar reflector smart radiators are able to control the temperature of spacecraft. This work demonstrates a novel smart optical solar reflector using a patterned thermo-chromic VO2 plasmonic meta-surface design. The VO2 meta-surface combines the temperature induced phase transition of VO2 with plasmonic resonances resulting in a significant enhancement of the infrared absorption. The enhanced absorption obtained at a reduced VO2 coverage results in superior emittance tunability Δe and lower solar absorptance α compared to a corresponding thin-film reflector. An emittance tunability of 0.48 is obtained for the meta-reflector design, representing a 30% improvement compared to the unstructured film. Meta-surface based smart optical solar reflectors offer a new route toward energy-efficient and cost-effective passive thermal control systems of spacecraft and other surfaces.

Single-nanoantenna has intrigued vast interest due to its exceptional properties such as light harvesting and field enhancement, which provide the opportunities for strengthening light-matter interaction and efficient photon manipulation in nano-scale, as well as boosting nonlinear response. On the other hand, materials with structural or electronic phase transition have been employed to achieve large optical modulation contrast and order-unity switching, making them promising building blocks for high-performance optical circuits and devices with ultra-small footprint. In this context we demonstrate nano-scale all-optical modulation with single Au antennas fabricated on phase-transition material vanadium dioxide (VO2) substrate. VO2 films are deposited on boroaluminosilicate glass coated with a 30-nm layer of fluorine-doped tin oxide. The inclusion of this intermediate layer allows the production of VO2 films with low surface roughness and suitable thermochromic transition temperature. Then the nanoantennas are fabricated by e-beam lithography and subsequent 45-nm-thick gold deposition on the VO2 substrate. A 5-nm-thick Ti layer is used to improve the adhesion of the gold to the VO2. We use a pump-probe spectroscopy to characterize the modulation feature of the antenna/VO2. The pump beam at 1060 nm wavelength is used to introduce a local heating for VO2's phase transition and the probe beam from 1100 nm to 2000 nm wavelength is for readout of the modulated local transmission of antenna/VO2 hybrid owing to the dielectric environment change. A spatial modulation technique is also used to extract the differential transmission (ΔT/T) around the antennas. As a result, with pump pulse energy increasing to less than 1 nJ, the measured ΔT/T of single-antenna//VO2 hybrid exhibits substantial change that crossing the zero line and significant blue shift. As reported the ΔT/T obtained from spatial modulation spectroscopy is supposed to be proportional to the antenna’s extinction cross section. However, with the obtained negative values which lead to unphysical extinction cross sections less than 0, we believe the VO2 substrate beneath the antennas is highly involved as its optical property has been modified considerately. In addition, we observe that the pump-modulated differential transmission of the antenna/VO2 hybrid evidently depends on the polarisation of the pump when it is below a certain level. In this regime, the parallel pumping excites the longitudinal resonant mode while the perpendicular one only induces non-resonant absorption of antenna’s transverse mode. Going beyond this regime, the stronger pump transits the VO2 substrate from insulating phase into metallic phase completely, which dominates the dielectric environment change of the antenna, leading to nearly polarisation-independent modulation. The time for fully switch-on obtained from the pump-probe measurement is less than 50 ps. We also investigate the time response of the differential transmission dependent on the pulse repetition rate and substrate temperature, respectively. Less modulation depth with repetition rate over 2 MHz or base temperature higher than 40 °C suggest that the heat accumulation from adjacent pulses and thermal equilibrium time plays important roles in the achievable modulation speed. The single-antenna/VO2 structure may find applications in nano-scale optoelectronics for multiple functionalities including modulation, memory and so on.

Background and aims The predictive value of traditional risk factors for vascular events in patients with manifest vascular disease is limited, underscoring the need for novel biomarkers to improve risk stratification. Since hematological parameters are routinely assessed in clinical practice, they are readily available candidates. Methods We used data from 3,922 vascular patients, who participated in the Second Manifestations of ARTerial Disease (SMART) study. We first investigated associations between recurrent vascular events and 22 hematological parameters, obtained from the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database (UPOD), and then assessed whether parameters associated with outcome improved risk prediction. Results After adjustment for all SMART risk score (SRS) variables, lymphocyte %, neutrophil count, neutrophil % and red cell distribution width (RDW) were significantly associated with vascular events. When individually added to the SRS, lymphocyte % improved prediction of recurrent vascular events with a continuous net reclassification improvement (cNRI) of 17.4% [95% CI: 2.1, 32.1%] and an increase in c-statistic of 0.011 [0.000, 0.022]. The combination of lymphocyte % and neutrophil count resulted in a cNRI of 22.2% [3.2, 33.4%] and improved c-statistic by 0.011 [95% CI: 0.000, 0.022]. Lymphocyte % and RDW yielded a cNRI of 18.7% [3.3, 31.9%] and improved c-statistic by 0.016 [0.004, 0.028]. However, the addition of hematological parameters only modestly increased risk estimates for patients with an event during follow-up. Conclusions Several hematological parameters were independently associated with recurrent vascular events. Lymphocyte % alone and in combination with other parameters enhanced discrimination and reclassification. However, the incremental value for patients with a recurrent event was limited.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified >250 loci for body mass index (BMI), implicating pathways related to neuronal biology. Most GWAS loci represent clusters of common, noncoding variants from which pinpointing causal genes remains challenging. Here we combined data from 718,734 individuals to discover rare and low-frequency (minor allele frequency (MAF) < 5%) coding variants associated with BMI. We identified 14 coding variants in 13 genes, of which 8 variants were in genes (ZBTB7B, ACHE, RAPGEF3, RAB21, ZFHX3, ENTPD6, ZFR2 and ZNF169) newly implicated in human obesity, 2 variants were in genes (MC4R and KSR2) previously observed to be mutated in extreme obesity and 2 variants were in GIPR. The effect sizes of rare variants are ~10 times larger than those of common variants, with the largest effect observed in carriers of an MC4R mutation introducing a stop codon (p.Tyr35Ter, MAF = 0.01%), who weighed ~7 kg more than non-carriers. Pathway analyses based on the variants associated with BMI confirm enrichment of neuronal genes and provide new evidence for adipocyte and energy expenditure biology, widening the potential of genetically supported therapeutic targets in obesity.

However, only a small number of common genetic variants have been identified, and common variants account for a modest proportion of the heritability. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the role of low-frequency and rare variants in alcohol and tobacco use. METHODS: We meta-analyzed ExomeChip association results from eight discovery cohorts and included 12,466 subjects and 7432 smokers in the analysis of alcohol consumption and tobacco use, respectively. The ExomeChip interrogates low-frequency and rare exonic variants, and in addition a small pool of common variants. We investigated top variants in an independent sample in which ICD-9 diagnoses of "alcoholism" (N=25,508) and "tobacco use disorder" (N=27,068) had been assessed. In addition to the single variant analysis, we performed gene-based, polygenic risk score (PRS), and pathway analyses. RESULTS: The meta-analysis did not yield exome-wide significant results. When we jointly analyzed our top results with the independent sample, no low-frequency or rare variants reached significance for alcohol consumption or tobacco use. However, two common variants that were present on the ExomeChip, rs16969968 (p=2.39x10(-7)) and rs8034191 (p=6.31x10(-7)) located in CHRNA5 and AGPHD1 at 15q25.1, showed evidence for association with tobacco use. DISCUSSION: Low-frequency and rare exonic variants with large effects do not play a major role in alcohol and tobacco use, nor does the aggregate effect of ExomeChip variants. However, our results confirmed the role of the CHRNA5-CHRNA3-CHRNB4 cluster of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit genes in tobacco use. 8 p.

Background and aims: We aimed to improve the understanding of potential associations between commonly available hematological biomarkers and the coronary artery calcification (CAC) score, which may help unravel the pathophysiology of coronary calcifications and subclinical coronary artery disease. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed within the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database (UPOD). Patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease who underwent CT CAC scoring as well as standard hematology analysis that was part of routine clinical care (within 3 months of CT acquisition) were included. Complete hematology datasets were extracted from hematology analyzers. Linear regression adjusted for potential confounders was used to assess if hematological biomarkers were related to the CAC score. Results: In total, 1504 patients were included, of whom 43% (n = 647) had a CAC score of 0. Mean age (±SD) was 53 ± 13 years, and 34% of patients were women. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW, β = 0.20 [0.05–0.36], p=0.007), the fraction of immature reticulocytes (β = 0.97 [0.10–6.43], p=0.004), coefficient of variation of neutrophil lobularity (β = 0.13 [0.01–0.25], p=0.040) and mean lymphocyte cell size (β = 0.21 [0.08–0.34], p=0.001) were positively associated with the CAC score after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Conclusions: This study confirms the known association of RDW with the CAC score, and presents the fraction of immature reticulocytes, coefficient of variation of neutrophil lobularity, and mean lymphocyte cell size as new markers associated with a higher CAC score.

High-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) are predictors of coronary artery disease. Recently, routine hematological parameters emerged as mortality predictors. We examined the predictive value of hematological parameters (from the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database) and hsTnI and NT-pro-BNP for mortality in a coronary angiography population (Utrecht Coronary Biobank n = 1913). Using Cox regression, receiver operating characteristics, integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), and continuous net reclassification improvement (cNRI) analysis, we compared the predictive properties of hematological parameters with hsTnI and NT-pro-BNP for mortality. During a median follow-up duration of 1.8 years, 77 deaths occurred. A panel of 7 hematological parameters (leukocyte count, reticulocyte mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell [RBC] green (FL1) fluorescence, %neutrophils, %large [>120 fL] RBCs, %monocytes, and coefficient of variation of neutrophil complexity) was highly predictive. Added to clinical characteristics, hematological parameters (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.855, P < .001; IDI: 0.04, P = .02; cNRI: 0.41, P < .001) were better predictors than hsTnI (AUC: 0.818) or NT-pro-BNP (AUC: 0.834) alone or combined (AUC: 0.834). Hematological parameters may provide mortality risk information following coronary angiography and may be superior to hsTnI and/or NT-pro-BNP.

PURPOSE: Studies on drug utilization usually do not allow direct cross-national comparisons because of differences in the respective applied methods. This study aimed to compare time trends in BZDs prescribing by applying a common protocol and analyses plan in seven European electronic healthcare databases. METHODS: Crude and standardized prevalence rates of drug prescribing from 2001-2009 were calculated in databases from Spain, United Kingdon (UK), The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Prevalence was stratified by age, sex, BZD type [(using ATC codes), i.e. BZD-anxiolytics BZD-hypnotics, BZD-related drugs and clomethiazole], indication and number of prescription. RESULTS: Crude prevalence rates of BZDs prescribing ranged from 570 to 1700 per 10 000 person-years over the study period. Standardization by age and sex did not substantially change the differences. Standardized prevalence rates increased in the Spanish (+13%) and UK databases (+2% and +8%) over the study period, while they decreased in the Dutch databases (-4% and -22%), the German (-12%) and Danish (-26%) database. Prevalence of anxiolytics outweighed that of hypnotics in the Spanish, Dutch and Bavarian databases, but the reverse was shown in the UK and Danish databases. Prevalence rates consistently increased with age and were two-fold higher in women than in men in all databases. A median of 18% of users received 10 or more prescriptions in 2008. CONCLUSION: Although similar methods were applied, the prevalence of BZD prescribing varied considerably across different populations. BACKGROUND: Results from observational studies may be inconsistent because of variations in methodological and clinical factors that may be intrinsically related to the database (DB) where the study is performed. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the impact of applying a common study protocol to study benzodiazepines (BZDs) (anxiolytics, hypnotics, and related drugs) and the risk of hip/femur fracture (HFF) across three European primary care DBs and to investigate any resulting discrepancies. METHODS: To measure the risk of HFF among adult users of BZDs during 2001-2009, three cohort and nested case control (NCC) studies were performed in Base de datos para la Investigacion Farmacoepidemiologica en Atencion Primaria (BIFAP) (Spain), Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) (UK), and Mondriaan (The Netherlands). Four different models (A-D) with increasing levels of adjustment were analyzed. The risk according to duration and type of BZD was also explored. Adjusted hazard ratios (cohort), odds ratios (NCC), and their 95% confidence intervals were estimated. RESULTS: Adjusted hazard ratios (Model C) were 1.34 (1.23-1.47) in BIFAP, 1.66 (1.54-1.78) in CPRD, and 2.22 (1.55-3.29) in Mondriaan in cohort studies. Adjusted odds ratios (Model C) were 1.28 (1.16-1.42) in BIFAP, 1.60 (1.49-1.72) in CPRD, and 1.48 (0.89-2.48) in Mondriaan in NCC studies. A short-term effect was suggested in Mondriaan, but not in CPRD or BIFAP. All DBs showed an increased risk with the concomitant use of anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs. CONCLUSIONS: Applying similar study methods to different populations and DBs showed an increased risk of HFF in BZDs users but differed in the magnitude of the risk, which may be because of inherent differences between DBs. We developed a tri-layer electron beam lithography lift-off process to improve the resolution of metal film patterning for 100nm thick films. The limitation of the bi-layer lift-off process is related to the trade-off in the thickness of the resist with high resolution requiring thin resist and lift-off ability requiring thick resist. A SiO2 layer sandwiched between top and bottom layer of the bi-layer resist breaks this limitation. The top layer resist which influences the lift-off resolution can be much thinner without influencing the lift-off ability which is now determined by the thickness of the bottom layer. Using this tri-layer method, we have achieved 2 dimensional structures with 100nm half pitch in both directions for 100nm thick Au or ITO layers on CaF2 substrate. We have used these structures to show resonant plasmonic features.

Alternative plasmonic materials like conducting oxides are of great interest for extending the application range of plasmonic and metamaterials with functionalities complementary to traditional noble metals. Here, we investigate the feasibility and limitations of using metal oxides as magnetic resonators for metamaterials and demonstrate that split ring resonators fabricated out of conducting metal oxides show pronounced magnetic and electric modes. The low negative permittivity of the oxide material results in ultrasmall resonant metamolecules, which show only weak interparticle coupling and which consequently allow rational design of extremely dense metamaterials with up to 80 elements per square wavelength and without any significant cross-coupling between elements. Broadband transmission response of up to 50% is obtained over an octave spreading bandwidth using a single-layer design. A series of alkylchalcogenostibines, Me2SbSenBu, MeSb(SenBu)2, Sb(SenBu)3 and MeSb(TenBu)2, have been designed and synthesised as potential precursors for chemical vapour deposition (CVD) by reaction of nBuELi (E = Se, Te) with the appropriate halostibine, Me3−nSbCln (n = 1, 2, 3), and characterised by 1H, 13C{1H} and 77Se{1H} or 125Te{1H} NMR spectroscopy as appropriate. MeSb(SenBu)2 and MeSb(TenBu)2 are very effective single source precursors for the low pressure CVD of high quality crystalline thin films of Sb2Se3 and Sb2Te3, respectively, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and thin film X-ray diffraction. Hall conductivity, carrier mobility, carrier density and, in the case of Sb2Te3, Seebeck coefficient measurements reveal electronic characteristics comparable with Sb2E3 deposited by atomic layer deposition or molecular beam epitaxy, suggesting materials quality and performance suitable for incorporation into electronic device structures. Choice of substrate and deposition conditions were found to significantly affect the morphology and preferred orientation of Sb2Te3 crystallites, enabling deposition of films with either 〈1 1 0〉 or 〈0 0 1〉 alignment. Use of micro-patterned substrates allowed selective deposition of crystalline 2D micro-arrays of Sb2Te3 onto exposed TiN surfaces only.

Resistive random access memory based on TiN/HfOx/TiN has been fabricated, with the stoichiometry of the HfOx layer altered through control of atomic layer deposition (ALD) temperature. Sweep and pulsed electrical characteristics were extracted before and after 60Co gamma irradiation. Monoclinic HfOx deposited at 400°C did not result in resistive switching. Deposition at 300°C and 350°C resulted in cubic HfOx which switched successfully. Both stoichiometric HfO2 and sub-oxides HfO2-x result in similar memory characteristics. All devices are shown to be radiation hard up to 10 Mrad(Si), independent of stoichiometry.

Cu/amorphous-SiC (a-SiC) electrochemical metallization memory cells have been fabricated with two different counter electrode (CE) materials, W and Au, in order to investigate the role of CEs in a non-oxide semiconductor switching matrix. In positive bipolar regime with Cu filaments forming and rupturing, the CE influences the OFF state resistance and minimum current compliance. Nevertheless, a similarity in SET kinetics is seen for both CEs, which differs from previously published SiO2 memories, confirming that CE effects are dependent on the switching layer material or type. Both a-SiC memories are able to switch in the negative bipolar regime, indicating Au and W filaments. This confirms that CEs can play an active role in a non-oxide semiconducting switching matrix, such as a-SiC. By comparing both Au and W CEs, this work shows that W is superior in terms of a higher ROFF/RON ratio, along with the ability to switch at lower current compliances making it a favourable material for future low energy applications. With its CMOS compatibility, a-SiC/W is an excellent choice for future resistive memory applications.

Nanoplasmonic components are of interest for their potential of achieving enhanced light-matter interaction through confinement of electromagnetic fields below the diffraction limit. In this field, plasmonic electro-optical modulators are novel devices enabling nanoscale footprint and ultrafast low-energy performance. Several implementations of these devices have been published so far, including hybrid plasmonic waveguides [1] and tunable metasurfaces. The tunability is enabled by an applied bias which changes the refractive index of a transparent conductive oxide through carrier accumulation, which influences nearby plasmonic structures. As transparent conductive oxides, indium tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum zinc oxide (AZO) are typically chosen due to their plasma resonances being in the infrared to visible frequencies [2,3].

Amorphous SiC with embedded Cu nanoparticles (a-SiC:Cu) was investigated as the insulator layer of Cu/a-SiC:Cu/Au resistive memory. The effect of the Cu embedding on resistive switching characteristics was studied for 20 and 30 vol% Cu. Reduced forming and SET voltages and increased endurance was observed for devices with 30Cu%. At the same time, all key advantageous characteristics of amorphous SiC resistive memory such as ON/OFF ratio of 107 and the co-existence of bipolar and unipolar modes were maintained upon Cu embedding. All above suggests that Cu embedding could be considered as a promising method to improve the overall performance of Cu/a-SiC:Cu/Au resistive memories.

ObjectivesWe compared four different approaches to record linkage, demonstrating its potential in enriching the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) with healthcare data from a large health insurance provider (AHD), which covers approximately 26% of the population. Challenges included the fact that young twins share most of their linkage variables and overlapping identification numbers were absent. We extensively validated the linkage results and complemented them with an indicator of representativeness.ApproachSubjects born since 1986 were selected in the NTR (N=30,383) and AHD (N=1,532,675). Linkage variables were cleaned and harmonised and linkage keys were chosen that were strong enough to uniquely identify most subjects in either dataset. The four linkages were deterministic, probabilistic, probabilistic with Jaro-Winkler distance, and probabilistic using encrypted identifiers.Validation took place by reviewing linkage variables and information like family relations; linked record pairs were categorised into correct, possible or false links. Furthermore, the consistency of linked data was reviewed focusing on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a prevalent condition among children. Finally, we quantified the impact of the linkage on representativeness of the target population.ResultsProbabilistic linkage with distance calculation linked 7944 NTR subjects to the AHD with 82% correct, 17% possible, and 1% false links. It encompassed nearly all links identified by any of the other methods, which were more conservative.Information about medication was available in the NTR dataset for 40% of the linked subjects. Validation of the information about ADHD inside linked records revealed few discrepancies between the two datasets. Linkage had a modest effect on the representativeness of the population. The current linkage has confirmed a number of known ADHD cases and identified 146 new subjects using methylphenidate and 101 receiving psychiatric care for ADHD, who were not previously recognized as ADHD cases within the NTR. ConclusionRecord linkage with sources of data such as a health insurance database can be an efficient way of data collection in cohort research. Our study shows that record linkage is also possible for twin pairs. Although a minority of all NTR subjects were covered by the AHD, the linkage resulted in an enrichment of the NTR dataset. Exact information about the dosage and frequency of drugs was obtained without contacting subjects with detailed questionnaires. With a total of almost eight thousand retrieved records, the size of the linked dataset is sufficiently large for epidemiological research of non-rare conditions.

A comparison is made of the behavior of silicon on insulator buried oxides and wet thermal oxides before and after fluorine implantation and irradiation. Before irradiation, the electrical characteristics of the thermal oxide and buried oxide are significantly different. The fluorine implantation in the smart-cut® buried oxide results in a large negative threshold shift due to the trapping of positive charges. These charges are associated with positively charged fluorine ions on implantation and are trapped at pre-existing trap sites, particularly at the bonding interface, and at additional defects caused by the ion implantation damage. This shift is absent in the wet thermal oxide. After Co60 irradiation up to 500 Krad(Si), the negative flatband and threshold voltage shift in the fluorine implanted buried oxide is larger than in the unimplanted buried oxide indicating that any potential positive effect of fluorine on the passivation of interface states is more than offset by the additional trapping sites created during implantation. These results demonstrate that in the design of a transistor utmost care must be taken to prevent any fluorine being implanted into the buried oxide.

With the maturation of the field of plasmonics, there is an increasing interest to develop new materials for plasmonics and field-enhanced spectroscopy. In particular, the combination with complementary functionalities, such as active control, is of importance. Metal oxides form an interesting materials platform with many applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, transparent conductors or heat reflective coatings. Here, I will present our recent results on the use of highly conductive metal oxides such as indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and aluminium-doped ZnO (AZO) in active plasmonics and metamaterials [1-4]. We can define three windows of operation for these materials, corresponding to the regimes of dielectric [1,2], metallic [3], and epsilon-near zero [4] response. By combining metal oxides with plasmonic materials such as gold and silver, we explore new types of hybrid response with the potential of electrical and picosecond optical control of plasmon resonances [1]. This includes combination of lithographically defined plasmonic nanostructures with coatings obtained using atomic layer deposition (ALD) [2]. Further in the mid infrared spectral range, the plasmonic response of highly doped metal oxides can be used for spectroscopic characterization of molecular species using Surface Enhanced Infrared Absorption [3]. We have developed new methods for the fabrication of metal oxide antennas and have demonstrated their use as plasmonic devices for infrared molecular fingerprinting. Finally, an intermediate regime is explored where the ITO permittivity approaches zero and the optical response is governed by superluminal group velocity enabling new plasmonic modes with large nonlinearity [4]. Cu/a-SiC/Au non-volatile resistive memories were fabricated and characterized.Co-existence of bipolar and unipolar resistive switching behavior was reported.Ultrahigh ON/OFF switching ratios in the range of 108-109 were reported.Excellent state retention up to 10years was also demonstrated. Amorphous SiC based resistive memory Cu/a-SiC/Au devices were fabricated and their resistive switching characteristics investigated. Co-existence of bipolar and unipolar behavior has been observed with ON/OFF current ratio in the range of 108-109. These high ratios are due to the conduction in the OFF state being dominated by the Schottky barrier between the Au and SiC. ON/OFF ratios exceeding 107 over 10years were predicted from retention characterization. The unique performance combination of the extremely high ON/OFF ratio, coexistence of bipolar and unipolar switching modes as well as excellent stability and retention suggest significant application potentials of Cu/a-SiC/Au RM devices.
