Abstract

The nucleus 212Po has been produced through the fragmentation of a 238U primary beam at 1 GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer γ-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown γ rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21− isomeric state feeding the α-emitting 45-s (18+) high-spin isomer. The other γ-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23+ metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the 212Po (18+) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of 238U fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high-j proton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z∼100 is sensitive.

Abstract

Excited states in the mirror nuclei 31P and 31S were populated in the 1p and 1n exit channels of the reaction 20Ne + 12C, at a beam energy of 33 MeV. The 20Ne beam was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident γ-rays and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were performed using the multi-detector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. In the observed B(E1) strengths, the isoscalar component, amounting to 24% of the isovector one, provides strong evidence for breaking of the isospin symmetry in the A=31 mass region. Self-consistent beyond mean field calculations using Equation of Motion method based on a chiral potential and including two- and three-body forces reproduce well the experimental B(E1) strengths, reinforcing our conclusion. Coherent mixing from higher-lying states involving the Giant Isovector Monopole Resonance accounts well for the effect observed. The breaking of the isospin symmetry originates from the violation of the charge symmetry of the two- and three-body parts of the potential, only related to the Coulomb interaction.

Abstract

The neutron-rich 213Pb isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV A 238U beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay γ-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newly observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in 213Pb are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum J=0. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of a geometric phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The γ-ray spectroscopic observables in 213Pb are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through a Berry phase.

Abstract

The γ-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between γ-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 μs isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

5. Ultrahigh sensitivity grating interferometry for laser-based X-ray phase contrast imaging

Ultrahigh sensitivity X-ray interferometry using micron-period gratings in long Talbot-Lau geometries is developed at ELI-NP, towards laser-based X-ray phase contrast imaging for medical applications. Results on mammography phantoms confirm the capabilities of the proposed method.

6. Liquid nitrogen cooling, control and monitoring system for the ELIADE HPGe clover detectors at ELI-NP

Abstract

We present a liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling station for the high-purity germanium (HPGe) segmented clover detectors of the ELI-NP Array of DEtectors (ELIADE) spectrometer, including its associated filling control and monitoring systems, all designed and built in-house at Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), Măgurele, Romania. The automated LN2 filling process is controlled by a CompactRIO (cRIO) system from National Instruments through a custom LabVIEW software used for monitoring both the internal germanium crystal temperatures as well as the temperatures of external Pt100 sensors (used for detection of overflow of LN2 from detectors during a filling process). The detectors are filled with LN2 by opening their individual filling valves (which are mounted on the cooling station) and the process is automatically stopped once an overflow condition is fulfilled by the corresponding external Pt100 sensor located downstream. A twelve-hour cycle is used to periodically fill all of the detector dewars and keep their germanium crystals cool at all times. The associated Graphic User Interface (GUI), Command Line Interface (CLI) and Text User Interface (TUI) are used for both controlling and monitoring the above mentioned process. Alert and warning email messages were also enabled via the cRIO system so that users can be alerted in real-time in the event of any cooling malfunction. In this way, any issues related to the cyclic filling procedure, as well as any abnormal observations regarding the germanium crystal temperatures can be quickly and efficiently addressed before the detectors have a chance to warm back up to room temperature. Temperature data of all the Pt100 sensors corresponding to detectors as well as to the solenoid valves are made available in an influx database by the cRIO control system. The web application Grafana access the database and plots them in real-time for online monitoring.

Abstract

A complete theoretical framework for photon elastic scattering has been implemented in GEANT4 and is validated against experimental results. The implementation covers all atomic numbers and energy range between 0.3 MeV and 20 MeV. The total elastic scattering cross section is calculated based on scattering amplitudes to account for interferences between coherent processes. New scattering amplitudes are calculated for Rayleigh scattering to extend the cross section data table and avoid interpolation and extrapolation. Validation on a significant number of test cases showed good agreement between our implementation and experimental data.

Abstract

Two analysis methods for $$\textit{Z}_\mathrm{eff}$$ evaluation were explored using both experimental and simulated gamma-ray attenuation data. Using particle-capture reactions on composite targets to generate multi-monoenergetic gamma rays between 1 and 12 MeV, we demonstrate the advantage of using neural networks for effective Z evaluation of shielded materials in single-pixel measurements. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to 2D processing of transmission radiography and by using Geant4-simulated data we prove the superiority of artificial neural networks in terms of image quality and material discrimination against classical methods.

Abstract

The new facility, Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), is a combined laser-gamma nuclear physics research facility currently undergoing its final implementation stages in Măgurele near Bucharest, Romania. It already hosts two fully-operational 10 PW laser arms and, by 2023, it will also house a γ-beam system based on laser Compton backscattering, capable of delivering a high-brilliance, low-energy beam at E γ ≲ 19.5 MeV. Owing to this unique laser-gamma instrumentation combination, several types of experiments will be possible at ELI-NP, including high precision nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) experiments. In this case, the main γ-beam detection system for performing NRF studies at ELI-NP is represented by the ELI Array of DEtectors (ELIADE), featuring eight high-purity germanium (HPGe) segmented clover detectors. The current work presents the characteristics of two of the ELIADE detectors, including their photopeak detection efficiency, energy resolution, and peak-to-total ratio measured using γ-ray sources, as well as the timing performance obtained via in-beam measurements. For these latter detector tests, 130La was populated via the fusion evaporation reaction 121Sb(12C,3n)130La using a beam energy of 53 MeV at the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), also located in Măgurele. Herein, we report on the results of the ^130La linear polarization measurements taken using the ELIADE detectors as Compton polarimeters. The results obtained from the in-beam experiment were compared to several already published works and we present new information on the transition multipolarity in 130La.

10. A neural-network based approach to cargo inspections using photon spectroscopy

Abstract

Bremsstrahlung based dual-energy attenuation is the most widely used methodology for high-energy cargo inspection systems and Z e f f mapping. Currently, the inspection systems do not exploit the spectroscopic component of the transmitted spectrum, relying mostly on energy integrated attenuation signals. In this work, we propose a neural-network based approach to determine Z e f f from energy resolved transmitted spectra using single high-energy attenuations. The neural-network approach based on a regression algorithm was benchmarked against the dual-energy attenuation method. The evaluation is made using Geant4 simulated data covering the full range of Z values and indicates potential improvements in terms of imaging speed and Z e f f discriminating power for the neural-network based approach.

Abstract

The γ decays of excited states in the very neutron-rich nucleus 88Se have been observed following the cold neutron-induced fission of 235U at the PF1B facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble. The EXILL array was used to measure γ - γ - γ coincidences, which were then analysed to build a level scheme of 88Se. A low (2+1) energy hints at the onset of quadrupole deformation and the identification of possible members of a (2+2) band provide evidence for γ vibrations. Shell-model calculations using a 78Ni core reproduce the experimental decay scheme well, implying that interactions between particles in the π f5/2 p and vsd orbits are responsible for much of the collectivity present. The algebraic collective model has also been used to interpret the experimental data, showing that that the experimental spectrum is consistent with 88Se being a transitional nucleus, possessing weak static β deformation and γ instability.

Abstract

International audience; A combination of germanium detectors has been installed at the PF1B neutronguide of the ILL to perform the prompt spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei produced in theneutron-capture induced-fission of 235U and 241Pu. Radiative capture reactions on rare targetshave also been performed. LaBr3 detectors from the FATIMA collaboration have also beeninstalled in complement with the EXOGAM clovers to measure lifetimes of low-lying excitedstates. The measured characteristics indicate very good performances of the overall setup. Somerecent results will be discussed.

The experimentis performed at the ILL reactor in Grenoble, using a highly efficient HPGearray, also coupled to fast LaBr3(Ce) scintillators. High-spin excited statesabove the 16.6 s isomer are observed, and the lifetime of the 13/2+ and15/2+ states is measured by fast-timing techniques, revealing a complexnature of the wave functions. The experimental results are well-interpretedby a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account the couplingbetween the valence proton and excitations (both collective and noncollective)of the doubly magic 132Sn core.

Abstract

At the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, germanium-gated γ-γ fast-timing lifetime measurements of nuclear excited states in neutron-rich nuclei have been performed within a prompt γ-ray spectroscopy experimental campaign. We report on results obtained from the cold-neutron induced fission of 235 U. The excited secondary fission products were stopped almost instantaneously within the thick target and the γ rays emitted were collected triggerlessly using the EXILL&FATIMA mixed array of HPGe and LaBr 3 (Ce) detectors. Precise lifetimes could be determined by analysing the γ-γ time difference spectra using the generalized centroid difference method. This picosecondsensitive method provides many advantages and is briefly explained. Still, the major source of systematic errors is related to the contribution of time-correlated Compton background. The EXILL&FATIMA results are discussed with respect to the typical energy-dependent timing behaviour of the background. According to the time response of the background, appropriate methods and a time correction for the sub-nanosecond regime are proposed.

Abstract

Measurement of γ radiation following slow neutron capture on 68 Zn and 70 Zn using very efficient germanium array EXILL was done at Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. New spectroscopic information for 69 Zn (including doorway state) and first results for 71 Zn (accurate energy of β decaying isomer) were obtained. Binding energies for 68 Zn, 69 Zn and 71 Zn were determined with 5-to-70 times higher accuracy than presented in the literature.

International audience; The low-spin structure of the 41Ca isotope, populated by neutron capture, has been investigated by high resolution γ-spectroscopy techniques. The experiment was performed at the PF1B cold neutron facility at the Institut Laue–Langevin (Grenoble, France) employing the EXILL array, consisting of 46 HPGe crystals. Several new γ rays have been observed and two excited states were newly established.

Abstract

The GERDA experiment is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory. The experiment aims at studying the neutrinoless ββ decay of 76Ge. The implementation of the experiment is divided in two consecutive phases. Phase I will allow within one year of data taking to reach a sensitivity limit for the half life of the process of the order of 2.5 × 10 25 years. Phase II, with an increased amount of active material and a background index lower by one order of magnitude than in Phase I, will allow to reach a half life limit of about 1.5 × 10 26 years. In the present paper a brief review of the status of the experiment and its perspectives is given.

Abstract

One way to explore exotic nuclei is to study their structure by performing γ-ray spectroscopy. At the ILL, we exploit a high neutron flux reactor to induce the cold fission of actinide targets. In this process, fission products that cannot be accessed using standard spontaneous fission sources are produced with a yield allowing their detailed study using high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy. This is what was pursued at the ILL with the EXILL (for EXOGAM at the ILL) campaign. In the present work, the EXILL setup and performance will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; Medium-spin excited states of the neutron-rich 87Br and 89Br nuclei were observed and studied for the first time. They were populated in fission of 235U induced by the cold-neutron beam of the PF1B facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble. The measurement of γ radiation following fission has been performed using the EXILL array of Ge detectors. The observed level schemes were compared with results of large valence space shell model calculations. Both medium-spin level schemes consist of band-like structures, which can be understood as bands built on the πf 5/2, πp 3/2 and πg 9/2 configurations. Both nuclei have 5/2− ground state spin-parity contrary to the odd-mass Br isotopes containing fewer neutrons, which have 3/2− ground state spin-parity. On the basis of the properties of the πg 9/2 decoupled bands the deformations of the 87Br and 89Br fit to the systematics of nuclei in the region. 87Br is close to the vibrational limit, while 89Br is more rotational.

Abstract

The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics facility will deliver brilliant gamma beams with high spectral density and a high degree of polarization starting in 2018 in Bucharest-Magurele, Romania. Several monitoring instruments are proposed for measuring the spectral, temporal, and spatial characteristics of the gamma beam. The d(γ,n)p reaction has been investigated for its use in determining the gamma beam parameters in a series of measurements carried out at the High Intensity Gamma Source, Durham, U.S.A.. Measurements of the emitted neutrons have been performed using liquid scintillator and 6Li-glass neutron detectors at several incident gamma energies between 2.5 to 20 MeV . The experimental results presented in this paper have shown that an instrument based on the d(γ,n)p reaction can be used to monitor the intensity and polarization of the gamma beam to be produced at ELI-NP.

Abstract

Fluctuation properties have been analysed for the energy levels predicted by IBFM calculations in the Ba isotopes 121Ba to 131Ba. The results are indicating, in general, a situation which is close to the chaotic limit. For the lighter isotopes studied (121 and 131), a phase transition is obtained in the low-spin, positive states, from a situation close to regularity at low excitation energies, towards chaoticity at higher excitations.

Abstract

Expérience ILL/EXOGAM; International audience; A cold neutron induced fission experiment recently took place at the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble. The neutron beam was provided by the nuclear reactor facility at ILL and the detector setup that was used for the -spectroscopy of the fission products consisted mainly of the detectors of the EXOGAM array [1], thereby the name of the campaign is EXILL. The main purpose of our measurement was to investigate the nuclei in the region with N = 50 close to 78Ni as well as the nuclei close to the N = 82 shell closure. In this paper, the motivation of the experiment is described as well as the experimental setup and the status of the ongoing data analysis.

Abstract

The low-lying levels of the odd-mass nuclei 131 Ce and 129 Ce have been investigated by means of the β + EC decays of 131g+m Pr and 129 Pr, respectively, The Pr nuclei were obtained by bombarding 94,96 Mo targets with a 255 MeV 40 Ca beam. The radioactivities produced in the reactions were transported with a He-jet device and γγt , X γt , e − γt coincidence measurements were performed. Conversion electrons were measured with a magnetic spectrometer and transition multipolarities were deduced. On-line mass separation was used to select the 129 Pr β-decay. The resulting level schemes of 131,129,127 Ce are discussed in connection with level systematics and calculations performed by using the Interacting Boson-Fermion Model (IBFM).
