Accurate orientation estimation of an object in a scene is critical in robotics, aerospace, augmented reality, and medicine, as it supports scene understanding. This paper introduces a novel orientation estimation approach leveraging radio frequency (RF) sensing technology and leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). Specifically, we propose a framework for a radar system to estimate the orientation of a \textit{dumb} LWA-equipped backscattering tag, marking the first exploration of this method in the literature. Our contributions include a comprehensive framework for signal modeling and orientation estimation with multi-subcarrier transmissions, and the formulation of a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). Moreover, we analyze the impact of imperfect tag location information, revealing that it minimally affects estimation accuracy. Exploiting related results, we propose an approximate MLE and introduce a low-complexity radiation-pointing angle-based estimator with near-optimal performance. We derive the feasible orientation estimation region of the latter and show that it depends mainly on the system bandwidth. Our analytical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations and reveal that the low-complexity estimator achieves near-optimal accuracy and that its feasible orientation estimation region is also approximately shared by the other estimators. Software-defined networking (SDN) is a centralized, dynamic, and programmable network management technology that enables flexible traffic control and scalability. SDN facilitates network administration through a centralized view of the underlying physical topology; tampering with this topology view can result in catastrophic damage to network management and security. To underscore this issue, we introduce Marionette, a new topology poisoning technique that manipulates OpenFlow link discovery packet forwarding to alter topology information. Our approach exposes an overlooked yet widespread attack vector, distinguishing itself from traditional link fabrication attacks that tamper, spoof, or relay discovery packets at the data plane. Unlike localized attacks observed in existing methods, our technique introduces a globalized topology poisoning attack that leverages control privileges. Marionette implements a reinforcement learning algorithm to compute a poisoned topology target, and injects flow entries to achieve a long-lived stealthy attack. Our evaluation shows that Marionette successfully attacks five open-source controllers and nine OpenFlow-based discovery protocols. Marionette overcomes the state-of-the-art topology poisoning defenses, showcasing a new class of topology poisoning that initiates on the control plane. With the expansion of cities over time, URT (Urban Rail Transit) networks have also grown significantly. Demand prediction plays an important role in supporting planning, scheduling, fleet management, and other operational decisions. In this study, we propose an Origin-Destination (OD) demand prediction model called Multi-Graph Inductive Representation Learning (mGraphSAGE) for large-scale URT networks under operational uncertainties. Our main contributions are twofold: we enhance prediction results while ensuring scalability for large networks by relying simultaneously on multiple graphs, where each OD pair is a node on a graph and distinct OD relationships, such as temporal and spatial correlations; we show the importance of including operational uncertainties such as train delays and cancellations as inputs in demand prediction for daily operations. The model is validated on three different scales of the URT network in Copenhagen, Denmark. Experimental results show that by leveraging information from neighboring ODs and learning node representations via sampling and aggregation, mGraphSAGE is particularly suitable for OD demand prediction in large-scale URT networks, outperforming reference machine learning methods. Furthermore, during periods with train cancellations and delays, the performance gap between mGraphSAGE and other methods improves compared to normal operating conditions, demonstrating its ability to leverage system reliability information for predicting OD demand under uncertainty., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

With increasingly larger and more complex telecommunication networks, there is a need for improved monitoring and reliability. Requirements increase further when working with mission-critical systems requiring stable operations to meet precise design and client requirements while maintaining high availability. This paper proposes a novel methodology for developing a machine learning model that can assist in maintaining availability (through anomaly detection) for client-server communications in mission-critical systems. To that end, we validate our methodology for training models based on data classified according to client performance. The proposed methodology evaluates the use of machine learning to perform anomaly detection of a single virtualized server loaded with simulated network traffic (using SIPp) with media calls. The collected data for the models are classified based on the round trip time performance experienced on the client side to determine if the trained models can detect anomalous client side performance only using key performance indicators available on the server. We compared the performance of seven different machine learning models by testing different trained and untrained test stressor scenarios. In the comparison, five models achieved an F1-score above 0.99 for the trained test scenarios. Random Forest was the only model able to attain an F1-score above 0.9 for all untrained test scenarios with the lowest being 0.980. The results suggest that it is possible to generate accurate anomaly detection to evaluate degraded client-side performance.

Multi-GPU nodes are increasingly common in the rapidly evolving landscape of exascale supercomputers. On these systems, GPUs on the same node are connected through dedicated networks, with bandwidths up to a few terabits per second. However, gauging performance expectations and maximizing system efficiency is challenging due to different technologies, design options, and software layers. This paper comprehensively characterizes three supercomputers - Alps, Leonardo, and LUMI - each with a unique architecture and design. We focus on performance evaluation of intra-node and inter-node interconnects on up to 4096 GPUs, using a mix of intra-node and inter-node benchmarks. By analyzing its limitations and opportunities, we aim to offer practical guidance to researchers, system architects, and software developers dealing with multi-GPU supercomputing. Our results show that there is untapped bandwidth, and there are still many opportunities for optimization, ranging from network to software optimization.

Upcoming physical layer (PHY) processing solutions, leveraging multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) advances, are expected to support broad transmission bandwidths and the concurrent transmission of multiple information streams. However, the inherent computational complexities of conventional MIMO PHY algorithms pose significant practical challenges, not only in meeting the strict real-time processing latency requirements but also in maintaining practical computational power consumption budgets. Novel computing paradigms, such as neuromorphic computing, promise substantial gains in computational power efficiency. However, it is unknown whether it is feasible or efficient to realize practical PHY algorithms on such platforms. In this work, we evaluate for the first time the potential of neuromorphic computing principles for multi-user (MU)-MIMO detection. In particular, we developed the first spiking-based MU-MIMO simulator that meets practical error-rate targets, suggesting power gains of at least one order of magnitude when realized on actual neuromorphic hardware, compared to conventional processing platforms. One of the requirements of network slicing in 5G networks is RAN (radio access network) scheduling with rate guarantees. We study a three-time-scale algorithm for maximum sum utility scheduling, with minimum rate constraints. As usual, the scheduler computes an index for each UE in each slot, and schedules the UE with the maximum index. This is at the fastest, natural time-scale of channel fading. The next time-scale is of the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) rate update. The slowest time scale in our algorithm is an "index-bias" update by a stochastic approximation algorithm, with a step-size smaller than the EWMA. The index-biases are related to Lagrange multipliers, and bias the slot indices of the UEs with rate guarantees, promoting their more frequent scheduling. We obtain a pair of coupled ordinary differential equations (o.d.e.) such that the unique stable points of the two o.d.e.s are the primal and dual solutions of the constrained utility optimization problem. The UE rate and index-bias iterations track the asymptotic behaviour of the o.d.e. system for small step-sizes of the two slower time-scale iterations. Simulations show that, by running the index-bias iteration at a slower time-scale than the EWMA iteration and using the EWMA throughput itself in the index-bias update, the UE rates stabilize close to the optimum operating point on the rate region boundary, and the index-biases have small fluctuations around the optimum Lagrange multipliers. Effective routing in satellite mega-constellations has become crucial to facilitate the handling of increasing traffic loads, more complex network architectures, as well as the integration into 6G networks. To enhance adaptability as well as robustness to unpredictable traffic demands, and to solve dynamic routing environments efficiently, machine learning-based solutions are being considered. For network control problems, such as optimizing packet forwarding decisions according to Quality of Service requirements and maintaining network stability, deep reinforcement learning techniques have demonstrated promising results. For this reason, we investigate the viability of multi-agent deep Q-networks for routing in satellite constellation networks. We focus specifically on reward shaping and quantifying training convergence for joint optimization of latency and load balancing in static and dynamic scenarios. With modern vehicles evolving with more features, services, complex systems, with more sensors, actuators, and processing units, it is essential to think about vehicles not only as means of transportation that may tend towards full autonomy, but also as adaptive objects, that suit themselves to the needs of occupants. Vehicular services can be developed to support these adaptations. However, the increasing complexity of vehicular service development, even with current standardizations and best practices and guidelines, are insufficient to tackle the high complexity of development, with expectations of up to 1 (U.S.) billion lines of code for a fully (level 5) autonomous vehicle. Within this survey, the paradigm of Deterministic Software Defined Vehicles is explored towards increasing the quality and easiness of the development of services for automotive. Towards this, a proposed vision with four pillars is also provided: the deterministic network configurator, the data layer configurator, and the hypervisor configurator and the vehicle abstraction layer, all coordinated by a software orchestrator.

To reduce the latency of Backpressure (BP) routing in wireless multi-hop networks, we propose to enhance the existing shortest path-biased BP (SP-BP) and sojourn time-based backlog metrics, since they introduce no additional time step-wise signaling overhead to the basic BP. Rather than relying on hop-distance, we introduce a new edge-weighted shortest path bias built on the scheduling duty cycle of wireless links, which can be predicted by a graph convolutional neural network based on the topology and traffic of wireless networks. Additionally, we tackle three long-standing challenges associated with SP-BP: optimal bias scaling, efficient bias maintenance, and integration of delay awareness. Our proposed solutions inherit the throughput optimality of the basic BP, as well as its practical advantages of low complexity and fully distributed implementation. Our approaches rely on common link features and introduces only a one-time constant overhead to previous SP-BP schemes, or a one-time overhead linear in the network size to the basic BP. Nowadays, the new network architectures with respect to the traditional network topologies must manage more data, which entails having increasingly robust and scalable network structures. As there is a process of growth, adaptability, and change in traditional data networks, faced with the management of large volumes of information, it is necessary to incorporate the virtualization of network functions in the context of information content networks, in such a way that there is a balance between the user and the provider at cost level and profit, the functions on the network. In turn, NFVs (Network Functions Virtualization) are considered network structures designed based on IT virtualization technologies, which allow virtualizing of the functions that can be found in the network nodes, which are connected through routing tables, which allows offering communication services for various types of customers. Therefore, information-centric networks (IC, unlike traditional data networks which proceed to exchange information between hosts using data packets and TCP/IP communication protocols, use the content of the data for this purpose where the data travels through the network is stored in a routing table located in the CR (Content Router) of the router temporality to be reused later, which allows for reducing operation costs and capital costs . In the new era of the Internet of Things (IoT), tasks are now being migrated to edge sites closer to data generators. Mobile devices inherently encounter limitations in terms of energy and computational processing capabilities. In high mobility paradigm, ISAC provides a promising foundation for integrating deployment management within dynamic spatial settings. We are interested in applying prediction mechanism to resource allocation management by extracting data attributes, focusing on ISAC related contexts of the trajectory and velocity and making the allocating decision. We present a system design, a theoretical framework and an implementation of the ClusterMan software package. The numerical suggests that the strong clustering subset of feature may yield high accuracy up to 97\% in the prediction results.

This work proposes a provably convergent and low complexity optimization algorithm for the maximization of the secrecy energy efficiency in the uplink of a wireless network aided by a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), in the presence of an eavesdropper. The mobil users' transmit powers and the RIS reflection coefficients are optimized. In a Proof-of-Work blockchain such as Bitcoin mining hashrate is increasing in the block reward. An increase in hashrate reduces network vulnerability to attack (a reduction in security cost) while increasing carbon emissions and electricity cost (an increase in externalities cost). This implies a tradeoff in total cost at different levels of hashrate and the existence of a hashrate interval where total cost is minimized. Targeted Nakamoto is a Proof-of-Work protocol augmentation that incentivizes miners to hone in on a target hashrate interval. When hashrate is above target a ceiling is placed on the block reward a miner can receive. When hashrate is below target a floor is placed underneath the miner's block reward. Monetary neutrality is maintained by a proportional increase in spending potential among addresses holding UTXO's to match a deduction from total block reward when the ceiling is operative and a proportional reduction in spending potential among addresses holding UTXO's to match an increase over the total block reward when the floor is binding.

In the past three years, working with the Pacific Salmon Foundation and various First Nations groups, we have established Starlink-empowered wild salmon monitoring sites in remote Northern British Columbia, Canada. We report our experiences with the network services in these challenging environments, including deep woods and deep valleys, that lack infrastructural support with some close to Starlink's service boundary at the far north. We assess the portability and mobility of the satellite dishes and the quality of existing network access in underdeveloped countries that Starlink expects to cover. Our experiences suggest that network access based on LEO satellite constellations holds promise but faces hurdles such as energy supply constraints and environmental factors like temperature, precipitation, and solar storms. The presence of wildlife and respecting local residents' culture and heritage pose further complications. Device redundancy is one of the most well-known mechanisms in distributed systems to increase the overall system fault tolerance and, consequently, trustworthiness. Existing algorithms in this regard aim to exchange a significant number of messages among nodes to identify and agree which communication links or nodes are faulty. This approach greatly degrades the performance of those wireless communication networks exposed to limited available bandwidth and/or energy consumption due to messages flooding. Lately, quantum-assisted mechanisms have been envisaged as an appealing alternative to improve the performance in this kind of communication networks and have been shown to obtain levels of performance close to the ones achieved in ideal conditions. The purpose of this paper is to further explore this approach by using super-additivity and superposed quantum trajectories in quantum Internet to obtain a higher system trustworthiness. More specifically, the wireless communication network that supports the permafrost telemetry service for the Antarctica together with five operational modes (three of them using classical techniques and two of them using quantum-assisted mechanisms) have been simulated. In recent years, the complexity of 5G and beyond wireless networks has escalated, prompting a need for innovative frameworks to facilitate flexible management and efficient deployment. The concept of digital twins (DTs) has emerged as a solution to enable real-time monitoring, predictive configurations, and decision-making processes. While existing works primarily focus on leveraging DTs to optimize wireless networks, a detailed mapping methodology for creating virtual representations of network infrastructure and properties is still lacking. In this context, we introduce VH-Twin, a novel time-series data-driven framework that effectively maps wireless networks into digital reality. VH-Twin distinguishes itself through complementary vertical twinning (V-twinning) and horizontal twinning (H-twinning) stages, followed by a periodic clustering mechanism used to virtualize network regions based on their distinct geological and wireless characteristics. Specifically, V-twinning exploits distributed learning techniques to initialize a global twin model collaboratively from virtualized network clusters. H-twinning, on the other hand, is implemented with an asynchronous mapping scheme that dynamically updates twin models in response to network or environmental changes. Leveraging real-world wireless traffic data within a cellular wireless network, comprehensive experiments are conducted to verify that VH-Twin can effectively construct, deploy, and maintain network DTs. Federated Learning (FL) offers a distributed framework to train a global control model across multiple base stations without compromising the privacy of their local network data. This makes it ideal for applications like wireless traffic prediction (WTP), which plays a crucial role in optimizing network resources, enabling proactive traffic flow management, and enhancing the reliability of downstream communication-aided applications, such as IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation systems. Despite its promise, the security aspects of FL-based distributed wireless systems, particularly in regression-based WTP problems, remain inadequately investigated. In this paper, we introduce a novel fake traffic injection (FTI) attack, designed to undermine the FL-based WTP system by injecting fabricated traffic distributions with minimal knowledge. We further propose a defense mechanism, termed global-local inconsistency detection (GLID), which strategically removes abnormal model parameters that deviate beyond a specific percentile range estimated through statistical methods in each dimension. Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence, and particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), offer promising prospects for aiding system administrators in managing the complexity of modern networks. However, despite this potential, a significant gap exists in the literature regarding the extent to which LLMs can understand computer networks. Without empirical evidence, system administrators might rely on these models without assurance of their efficacy in performing network-related tasks accurately. In this paper, we are the first to conduct an exhaustive study on LLMs' comprehension of computer networks. We formulate several research questions to determine whether LLMs can provide correct answers when supplied with a network topology and questions on it. To assess them, we developed a thorough framework for evaluating LLMs' capabilities in various network-related tasks. We evaluate our framework on multiple computer networks employing proprietary (e.g., GPT4) and open-source (e.g., Llama2) models. Our findings in general purpose LLMs using a zero-shot scenario demonstrate promising results, with the best model achieving an average accuracy of 79.3%. Proprietary LLMs achieve noteworthy results in small and medium networks, while challenges persist in comprehending complex network topologies, particularly for open-source models. Moreover, we provide insight into how prompt engineering can enhance the accuracy of some tasks.

This paper considers networks where user traffic is regulated through deterministic traffic profiles, e.g., token buckets, and requires hard delay bounds. The network's goal is to minimize the resources it needs to meet those bounds. The paper explores how reprofiling, i.e., proactively modifying how user traffic enters the network, can be of benefit. Reprofiling produces ``smoother'' flows but introduces an up-front access delay that forces tighter network delays. The paper explores this trade-off and demonstrates that, unlike what holds in the single-hop case, reprofiling can be of benefit} even when ``optimal'' schedulers are available at each hop.

Mobile networks have increased spectral efficiency through advanced multiplexing strategies that are coordinated by base stations (BS) in licensed spectrum. However, external interference on clients leads to significant performance degradation during dynamic (unlicensed) spectrum access (DSA). We introduce the notion of network tomography for DSA, whereby clients are transformed into spectrum sensors, whose joint access statistics are measured and used to account for interfering sources. Albeit promising, performing such tomography naively incurs an impractical overhead that scales exponentially with the multiplexing order of the strategies deployed -- which will only continue to grow with 5G/6G technologies. To this end, we propose a novel, scalable network tomography framework called NeTo-X that estimates joint client access statistics with just linear overhead, and forms a blue-print of the interference, thus enabling efficient DSA for future networks. NeTo-X's design incorporates intelligent algorithms that leverage multi-channel diversity and the spatial locality of interference impact on clients to accurately estimate the desired interference statistics from just pair-wise measurements of its clients. The state-of-the-art topologies of datacenter networks are fixed, based on electrical switching technology, and by now, we understand their throughput and cost well. For the past years, researchers have been developing novel optical switching technologies that enable the emergence of reconfigurable datacenter networks (RDCNs) that support dynamic psychical topologies. The art of network design of dynamic topologies, i.e., 'Topology Engineering,' is still in its infancy. Different designs offer distinct advantages, such as faster switch reconfiguration times or demand-aware topologies, and to date, it is yet unclear what design maximizes the throughput. This paper aims to improve our analytical understanding and formally studies the throughput of reconfigurable networks by presenting a general and unifying model for dynamic networks and their topology and traffic engineering. We use our model to study demand-oblivious and demand-aware systems and prove new upper bounds for the throughput of a system as a function of its topology and traffic schedules. Next, we offer a novel system design that combines both demand-oblivious and demand-aware schedules, and we prove its throughput supremacy under a large family of demand matrices. We evaluate our design numerically for sparse and dense traffic and show that our approach can outperform other designs by up to 25% using common network parameters.

Honeypots are designed to trap the attacker with the purpose of investigating its malicious behavior. Owing to the increasing variety and sophistication of cyber attacks, how to capture high-quality attack data has become a challenge in the context of honeypot area. All-round honeypots, which mean significant improvement in sensibility, countermeasure and stealth, are necessary to tackle the problem. In this paper, we propose a novel honeypot architecture termed HoneyDOC to support all-round honeypot design and implementation. Our HoneyDOC architecture clearly identifies three essential independent and collaborative modules, Decoy, Captor and Orchestrator. Based on the efficient architecture, a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enabled honeypot system is designed, which supplies high programmability for technically sustaining the features for capturing high-quality data. A proof-of-concept system is implemented to validate its feasibility and effectiveness. Intelligent machines (IMs), including industrial machines, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned vehicles, etc., could perform effective cooperation in complex environment when they form IM network. The efficient environment sensing and communication are crucial for IM network, enabling the real-time and stable control of IMs. With the emergence of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology, IM network is empowered with ubiquitous sensing capabilities, which is helpful in improving the efficiency of communication and sensing with the mutual benefit of them. However, the massive amount of sensing information brings challenges for the processing, storage and application of sensing information. Network speeds grow quickly in the modern cloud, so SmartNICs are introduced to offload network processing tasks, even application logic. However, typical multicore SmartNICs such as BlueFiled-2 are only capable of processing control-plane tasks with their embedded processors that have limited memory bandwidth and computing power. On the other hand, cloud applications evolve rapidly, such that a limited number of fixed hardware engines in a SmartNIC cannot satisfy the requirements of cloud applications. Therefore, SmartNIC programmers call for a programmable datapath accelerator (DPA) to process network traffic at line rate. However, no existing work has unveiled the performance characteristics of the existing DPA. To this end, we present the first architectural characterization of the latest DPA-enhanced BlueFiled-3 (BF3) SmartNIC. Our evaluation results indicate that BF3's DPA is significantly wimpier than the off-path Arm processor and the host CPU. However, we still identify that DPA has three unique architectural characteristics that unleash the performance potential of DPA. Specifically, we demonstrate how to take advantage of DPA's three architectural characteristics regarding computing, networking, and memory subsystems. Then we propose three important guidelines for programmers to fully unleash the potential of DPA. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct detailed case studies regarding each guideline. Network slicing is a crucial enabler and a trend for the Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) and various other new systems like the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and Industrial IoT (IIoT). Orchestration and machine learning are key elements with a crucial role in the network-slicing processes since the NS process needs to orchestrate resources and functionalities, and machine learning can potentially optimize the orchestration process. However, existing network-slicing architectures lack the ability to define intelligent approaches to orchestrate features and resources in the slicing process. This paper discusses machine learning-based orchestration of features and capabilities in network slicing architectures. Initially, the slice resource orchestration and allocation in the slicing planning, configuration, commissioning, and operation phases are analyzed. In sequence, we highlight the need for optimized architectural feature orchestration and recommend using ML-embed agents, federated learning intrinsic mechanisms for knowledge acquisition, and a data-driven approach embedded in the network slicing architecture. We further develop an architectural features orchestration case embedded in the SFI2 network slicing architecture. An attack prevention security mechanism is developed for the SFI2 architecture using distributed embedded and cooperating ML agents. The Lightning Network, known for its millisecond settlement speeds and low transaction fees, offers a compelling alternative to traditional payment processors, which often have higher fees and longer processing times. This is particularly significant for the unbanked population, which lacks access to standard financial services. Our research targets businesses looking to shift their client to client payment processes, such as B2B invoicing, remittances, and cross-border transactions, to the Lightning Network. We compare the efficiency of interconnected mesh nodes (complete graph topology) with central routing nodes (star graph topology), with a specific focus on the dual central node approach. This approach introduces features like circular rebalancing, redundancy, and a closed network system. Through a basic SimPy model, we assess the network's throughput in a 100 node scenario. While this approach centralizes a technology initially designed for decentralization, it fosters broader enterprise adoption of Bitcoin-based payment networks and encourages participation in the decentralized financial ecosystem. Our study also considers the regulatory implications of using central routing nodes, possibly classified as payment processors under Money Transmission Laws (MTL). The rapid proliferation of smart cities has transformed urban landscapes into dynamic ecosystems teeming with interconnected computational nodes and sensors. During this evolution, the search for seamless communication in time-critical scenarios has become evident. With the escalating complexity of urban environments, envisioning a future with a blend of autonomous and conventional systems, each demanding distinct quality-of-service considerations, services in smart cities vary criticality levels and necessitate differentiated traffic handling, prioritizing critical flows without compromising the network's reliability or failing on hard real-time requirements. To tackle these challenges, in this article we propose a Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) approach which, at the scale of a smart city network, presents multifaceted challenges, notably interoperability among diverse technologies and standards. Nonetheless, TSN emerges as a promising toolkit, encompassing synchronization, latency management, redundancy, and configuration functionalities crucial for addressing smart city challenges. Moreover, the article scrutinizes how TSN, predominantly utilized in domains like automotive and industry, can be tailored to suit the intricate needs of smart cities, emphasizing the necessity for adaptability and scalability in network design. This survey consolidates current research on TSN, outlining its potential in fortifying critical machine-to-machine communications within smart cities while highlighting future challenges, potential solutions, and a roadmap for integrating TSN effectively into the fabric of urban connectivity.

Computational offloading has become an enabling component for edge intelligence in mobile and smart devices. Existing offloading schemes mainly focus on mobile devices and servers, while ignoring the potential network congestion caused by tasks from multiple mobile devices, especially in wireless multi-hop networks. To fill this gap, we propose a low-overhead, congestion-aware distributed task offloading scheme by augmenting a distributed greedy framework with graph-based machine learning. In this study, the Active Control in an Intelligent and Distributed Environment (ACIDE) media distribution model solution and algorithms are proposed for livestreaming in capacity efficient mobile wireless networks. The elements of the ACIDE model are a base station and a cluster formed by a number of peers able to establish peer to peer communications. The cluster peers are selected from a group of users interested in livestreaming the same media. The ACIDE model solution minimizes the bandwidth allocated to a cluster of n peers such that an uninterrupted media play for all peers is guaranteed. The livestream media is sent to the peers in packages and every media package is divided into n blocks. The blocks are distributed to the n peers of a cluster in two phases, such that the base station bandwidth is utilized during first phase only. The allocated bandwidth, the amount of bandwidth the base station has to allocate to a cluster, is minimized and its lower bound is equal to the bandwidth required for multicasting. In this study, the ACIDE model is used to address the problem of how to find the maximum number of peers n, chosen from a group of N users, that can be admitted to a cluster knowing the given allocated bandwidth, the amount of bandwidth that a base station allocates to a cluster in advance, prior to admitting users. When users become peers of an ACIDE cluster, the network capacity, the total number of users who are able to access live media, increases meaning that network resources are used more efficiently. The problem of finding the maximum number of peers n is addressed as an optimization problem, with the objective of having the entire given allocated bandwidth used by the peers admitted to the cluster. In this paper, a media distribution model, Active Control in an Intelligent and Distributed Environment (ACIDE), is proposed for bandwidth efficient livestreaming in mobile wireless networks. Two optimization problems are addressed. The first problem is how to minimize the bandwidth allocated to a cluster of n peers such that a continuous media play for all peers is guaranteed. The second problem is how to find the maximum number of peers n, chosen from a group of N users, that can be admitted to a cluster knowing the given allocated bandwidth, the amount of bandwidth that a base station allocates to a cluster prior to admitting users. Backpressure (BP) routing is a well-established framework for distributed routing and scheduling in wireless multi-hop networks. However, the basic BP scheme suffers from poor end-to-end delay due to the drawbacks of slow startup, random walk, and the last packet problem. Biased BP with shortest path awareness can address the first two drawbacks, and sojourn time-based backlog metrics were proposed for the last packet problem. Furthermore, these BP variations require no additional signaling overhead in each time step compared to the basic BP. In this work, we further address three long-standing challenges associated with the aforementioned low-cost BP variations, including optimal scaling of the biases, bias maintenance under mobility, and incorporating sojourn time awareness into biased BP. Our analysis and experimental results show that proper scaling of biases can be achieved with the help of common link features, which can effectively reduce end-to-end delay of BP by mitigating the random walk of packets under low-to-medium traffic, including the last packet scenario. The allreduce operation is an essential building block for many distributed applications, ranging from the training of deep learning models to scientific computing. In an allreduce operation, data from multiple hosts is aggregated together and then broadcasted to each host participating in the operation. Allreduce performance can be improved by a factor of two by aggregating the data directly in the network. Switches aggregate data coming from multiple ports before forwarding the partially aggregated result to the next hop. In all existing solutions, each switch needs to know the ports from which it will receive the data to aggregate. However, this forces packets to traverse a predefined set of switches, making these solutions prone to congestion. For this reason, we design Canary, the first congestion-aware in-network allreduce algorithm. Canary uses load balancing algorithms to forward packets on the least congested paths. Because switches do not know from which ports they will receive the data to aggregate, they use timeouts to aggregate the data in a best-effort way. We develop a P4 Canary prototype and evaluate it on a Tofino switch. We then validate Canary through simulations on large networks, showing performance improvements up to 40% compared to the state-of-the-art.

The wired charging and the need for battery replacements are critical barriers to unlimited, scalable, and sustainable mobile connectivity, motivating the interest in radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. However, the inherently low end-to-end power transfer efficiency (PTE) and health/safety-related apprehensions about the technology are critical obstacles. Indeed, RF-WPT implementation and operation require efficient and cautious strategies and protocols, especially when targeting high-power charging, which constitutes the scope of this work. Herein, we overview the main factors affecting the end-to-end PTE of RF-WPT systems and their multiplicative effect and interdependencies. Moreover, we discuss key electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure metrics, safety limits, and approaches for efficient and EMF-aware deployment and operation. Quantitatively, we show that near-field RF charging may significantly reduce EMF exposure, and thus must be promoted. We also present our vision of a cyber-physical system for efficient and safe wireless charging, specify key components and their interrelation, and illustrate numerically the PTE attained by two modern low-power multi-antenna architectures in a simple setup. Throughout the paper, we highlight the need for high end-to-end PTE architectures and charging protocols transparently complying with EMF exposure regulations and outline relevant challenges and research directions. We consider a remote sensing system in which fixed sensors are placed in a region, and a drone flies over the region to collect information from cluster heads. We assume that the drone has a fixed maximum range, and that the energy consumption for information transmission from the cluster heads increases with distance according to a power law. Given these assumptions, we derive local optimum conditions for a drone path that either minimizes the total energy or the maximum energy required by the cluster heads to transmit information to the drone. We show how a homotopy approach can produce a family of solutions for different drone path lengths, so that a locally optimal solution can be found for any drone range. We implement the homotopy solution in python, and demonstrate the tradeoff between drone range and cluster head power consumption for several geometries. Execution time is sufficiently rapid for the computation to be performed real time, so the drone path can be recalculated on the fly. The solution is shown to be globally optimal for sufficiently long drone path lengths. The current Internet lacks quality-of-service guarantees for real-time applications like video calls and gaming, cloud-based systems, financial transactions, telesurgery, and other remote applications that benefit from reliable communication. To address this problem, this paper introduces Hummingbird: a novel, lightweight bandwidth-reservation system that provides fine-grained inter-domain reservations for end hosts and introduces several improvements over previous designs. Hummingbird enables flexible and composable reservations with end-to-end guarantees, and addresses an often overlooked, but crucial, aspect of bandwidth reservation systems: incentivization of network providers. Hummingbird represents bandwidth reservations as tradeable assets which allows markets to emerge that ensure fair and efficient resource allocation and encourage deployment by remunerating providers. This incentivization is facilitated by decoupling reservations from network identities, which enables novel control-plane mechanisms and allows us to design a control plane based on smart contracts. Hummingbird also provides an efficient reservation data plane which streamlines the processing on routers and thus simplifies the implementation, deployment, and traffic policing while maintaining robust security properties., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Mesh is widely recognized as a driver technology for IoT applications. However, the lack of quality of service (QoS) in BLE Mesh, represented by packet prioritization, significantly limits its potential. This work implements a quality-of-service (QoS) method for BLE Mesh to prioritize the data packets and provide them with different network transmission settings according to their assigned priority. Unlike existing works on QoS for BLE Mesh, our proposed approach does not require any modifications to the BLE Mesh protocol and can be smoothly adopted in existing BLE Mesh networks. We conducted an extensive measurement campaign to evaluate our solution over a 15-node BLE Mesh network deployed to emulate a smart healthcare scenario where 45 sensors with an assigned priority transmit information over the network. The experiments provide performance results for single and multi channel network scenarios. Network Slicing (NS) is an essential technique extensively used in 5G networks computing strategies, mobile edge computing, mobile cloud computing, and verticals like the Internet of Vehicles and industrial IoT, among others. NS is foreseen as one of the leading enablers for 6G futuristic and highly demanding applications since it allows the optimization and customization of scarce and disputed resources among dynamic, demanding clients with highly distinct application requirements. Various standardization organizations, like 3GPP's proposal for new generation networks and state-of-the-art 5G/6G research projects, are proposing new NS architectures. However, new NS architectures have to deal with an extensive range of requirements that inherently result in having NS architecture proposals typically fulfilling the needs of specific sets of domains with commonalities. The Slicing Future Internet Infrastructures (SFI2) architecture proposal explores the gap resulting from the diversity of NS architectures target domains by proposing a new NS reference architecture with a defined focus on integrating experimental networks and enhancing the NS architecture with Machine Learning (ML) native optimizations, energy-efficient slicing, and slicing-tailored security functionalities. The SFI2 architectural main contribution includes the utilization of the slice-as-a-service paradigm for end-to-end orchestration of resources across multi-domains and multi-technology experimental networks. Service providers commonly provide only a fixed catalog of services to their clients. Both clients and service providers can benefit from service negotiation, in which a client makes a query for a specific service, and the provider counters with an offer. The query could include parameters that control the performance, reliability, and function of the service. However, a problem with service negotiation is that it can be expensive for a service provider to support. In this paper we define a formal negotiation policy language that enables automated service negotiation. In the model supported by the language, service providers can recursively obtain the services they need from sub-providers. The queries made by clients, and the offers returned from service providers, are expressed in quantifier-free first-order logic. Quantifier elimination is used to transform constraints between providers and sub-providers. The pattern of interaction between clients and service providers is defined in process algebra. In this paper, we examine cloud-edge-terminal IoT networks, where edges undertake a range of typical dynamic scheduling tasks. In these IoT networks, a central policy for each task can be constructed at a cloud server. The central policy can be then used by the edges conducting the task, thereby mitigating the need for them to learn their own policy from scratch. Furthermore, this central policy can be collaboratively learned at the cloud server by aggregating local experiences from the edges, thanks to the hierarchical architecture of the IoT networks. To this end, we propose a novel collaborative policy learning framework for dynamic scheduling tasks using federated reinforcement learning. For effective learning, our framework adaptively selects the tasks for collaborative learning in each round, taking into account the need for fairness among tasks. In addition, as a key enabler of the framework, we propose an edge-agnostic policy structure that enables the aggregation of local policies from different edges. We then provide the convergence analysis of the framework. Through simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed framework significantly outperforms the approaches without collaborative policy learning. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) seeks to replace hardware middleboxes with software-based Network Functions (NFs). NFV systems are seeing greater deployment in the cloud and at the edge. However, especially at the edge, there is a mismatch between the traditional focus on NFV throughput and the need to meet very low latency SLOs, as edge services inherently require low latency. Moreover, cloud-based NFV systems need to achieve such low latency while minimizing CPU core usage. We find that real-world traffic exhibits burstiness that causes latency spikes of up to 10s of milliseconds in existing NFV systems. To address this, we built NetBlaze, which achieves sub-millisecond p99 latency SLOs, even for adversarial traffic, using a novel multi-scale core-scaling strategy. NetBlaze makes traffic-to-core allocation decisions at rack, server, and core-spatial scales, and at increasingly finer timescales, to accommodate multi-timescale bursts. By combining the security features of TLS with the reliability of TCP, QUIC opens new possibilities for many applications. We demonstrate the benefits that QUIC brings for routing protocols. Current Internet routing protocols use insecure transport protocols. BGP uses TCP possibly with authentication. OSPF uses its own transport protocol above plain IP. We design and implement a library that allows to replace the transport protocols used by BGP and OSPF with QUIC. Handover (HO) management is one of the most crucial tasks in dense cellular networks with mobile users. A problem in the HO management is to deal with increasing HOs due to network densification in the 5G evolution and various HO skipping techniques have so far been studied in the literature to suppress excessive HOs. In this paper, we propose yet another HO skipping scheme, called periodic HO skipping. The proposed scheme prohibits the HOs of a mobile user equipment (UE) for a certain period of time, referred to as skipping period, thereby enabling flexible operation of the HO skipping by adjusting the length of the skipping period. We investigate the performance of the proposed scheme on the basis of stochastic geometry. Specifically, we derive analytical expressions of two performance metrics -- the HO rate and the expected downlink data rate -- when a UE adopts the periodic HO skipping. Numerical results based on the analysis demonstrate that the periodic HO skipping scenario can outperform the scenario without any HO skipping in terms of a certain utility metric representing the trade-off between the HO rate and the expected downlink data rate, in particular when the UE moves fast. Furthermore, we numerically show that there can exist an optimal length of the skipping period, which locally maximizes the utility metric, and approximately provide the optimal skipping period in a simple form. The automation of factories and manufacturing processes has been accelerating over the past few years, boosted by the Industry 4.0 paradigm, including diverse scenarios with mobile, flexible agents. Efficient coordination between mobile robots requires reliable wireless transmission in highly dynamic environments, often with strict timing requirements. Goal-oriented communication is a possible solution for this problem: communication decisions should be optimized for the target control task, providing the information that is most relevant to decide which action to take. From the control perspective, networked control design takes the communication impairments into account in its optmization of physical actions. In this work, we propose a joint design that combines goal-oriented communication and networked control into a single optimization model, an extension of a multiagent POMDP which we call Cyber-Physical POMDP (CP-POMDP). The model is flexible enough to represent several swarm and cooperative scenarios, and we illustrate its potential with two simple reference scenarios with a single agent and a set of supporting sensors. Active Queue Management (AQM) for mitigating Internet congestion has been addressed via various feedback control syntheses, especially P, PI, and PID regulators, by using a linear approximation where the ``round trip time'', i.e., the delay, is assumed to be constant. This constraint is lifted here by using a nonlinear modeling with a variable delay, introduced more than 20 years ago. This delay, intimately linked to the congestion phenomenon, may be viewed as a ``flat output.'' All other system variables, especially the control variable, i.e., the packet loss ratio, are expressed as a function of the delay and its derivatives: they are frozen if the delay is kept constant. This flatness-like property, which demonstrates the mathematical discrepancy of the linear approximation adopted until today, yields also our control strategy in two steps: Firstly, designing an open-loop control, thanks to straightforward flatness-based control techniques, and secondly, closing the loop via Model-Free Control (MFC) in order to take into account severe model mismatches, like, here, the number of TCP sessions. With the continuous increment of maritime applications, the development of marine networks for data offloading becomes necessary. However, the limited maritime network resources are very difficult to satisfy real-time demands. Besides, how to effectively handle multiple compute-intensive tasks becomes another intractable issue. Hence, in this paper, we focus on the decision of maritime task offloading by the cooperation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and vessels. Specifically, we first propose a cooperative offloading framework, including the demands from marine Internet of Things (MIoTs) devices and resource providers from UAVs and vessels. Due to the limited energy and computation ability of UAVs, it is necessary to help better apply the vessels to computation offloading. Then, we formulate the studied problem into a Markov decision process, aiming to minimize the total execution time and energy cost. Then, we leverage Lyapunov optimization to convert the long-term constraints of the total execution time and energy cost into their short-term constraints, further yielding a set of per-time-slot optimization problems. Furthermore, we propose a Q-learning based approach to solve the short-term problem efficiently. The diversity of workload requirements and increasing hardware heterogeneity in emerging high performance computing (HPC) systems motivate resource disaggregation. Resource disaggregation allows compute and memory resources to be allocated individually as required to each workload. However, it is unclear how to efficiently realize this capability and cost-effectively meet the stringent bandwidth and latency requirements of HPC applications. To that end, we describe how modern photonics can be co-designed with modern HPC racks to implement flexible intra-rack resource disaggregation and fully meet the bit error rate (BER) and high escape bandwidth of all chip types in modern HPC racks. Our photonic-based disaggregated rack provides an average application speedup of 11% (46% maximum) for 25 CPU and 61% for 24 GPU benchmarks compared to a similar system that instead uses modern electronic switches for disaggregation. Using observed resource usage from a production system, we estimate that an iso-performance intra-rack disaggregated HPC system using photonics would require 4x fewer memory modules and 2x fewer NICs than a non-disaggregated baseline., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables. This article shows a brief history of Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) in Communications, a proposed redefinition of TEA as well as the new challenges derived from a dynamic context with cloud-native virtualized networks, the Helium Network & alike blockchain-based decentralized networks, the new network as a platform (NaaP) paradigm, carbon pricing, network sharing, and web3, metaverse and blockchain technologies. The authors formulate the research question and show the need to improve TEA models to integrate and manage all this increasing complexity. This paper also proposes the characteristics TEA models should have and their current degree of compliance for several use cases: 5G and beyond, software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN), secure access service edge (SASE), secure service edge (SSE), and cloud cybersecurity risk assessment.
