1. Google Earth Engine-based Mangrove Mapping and Change Detections for Sustainable Development in Tien Yen District, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam

Abstract

Vietnam secures a place among the top countries that possess the largest mangrove areas worldwide. The mangrove forests are mainly found in the Northern, Northeast, Central and Southern Delta, providing goods to habitants, and make significant help mitigate global climate change. Despite this, mangroves are severely threatened because of extensive deforestation in Vietnam. Recent advances have utilized remotely sensed imagery to present the spatial and temporal distribution of mangroves. Nevertheless, the approach is limited by imagery availability and computing resources, and difficult to share within the community. Therefore, a shareable Web-based tool that reinforces coastal managers to monitor the changes in mangroves is needed. Recently, Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based geospatial analysis platform, which allows users to freely exploit the availability of satellite imagery and harness their computing capacity. This research aims to use GEE to detect mangrove changes, a case study in Tien Yen district, Quang Ninh, over a period from 2010 to 2020. Four supervised classification algorithms, including Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes classifier, and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) have been implemented on GEE platform to select the best algorithm to produce spatial-temporal mangrove maps, then change detection of mangroves is performed. The results showed that RF demonstrated the highest accuracy with overall accuracy and kappa values of 91.04% and 0.75 respectively. The mangrove areas statistically reported by the GEE-based platform are in line with the governmental statistic report annually, marking the capabilities of GEE in natural resource management.

2. Biomass yield potential, feedstock quality, and nutrient removal of perennial buffer strips under continuous zero fertilizer application

Abstract

Perennial-based buffer strips have been promoted as having the potential for improving ecosystem services from riparian areas while producing biomass as livestock feed or as a bioenergy feedstock. Both biomass production and nutrient removal of buffer strips are substantially influenced by the vegetation types for the multipurpose perennial buffers. In this 2016–2019 study in western Illinois, two perennial cropping systems, including forage crops composed of cool-season grass mixtures (forage system) and bioenergy crops made up of warm-season grass mixtures (bioenergy system), were used to establish buffer strips for assessing biomass production, feedstock quality, nutrient removal, and buffer longevity. Treatments for this study reflecting agronomic practices included (1) two harvests occurring in summer (at anthesis) and fall (after complete senescence) and (2) one harvest in fall for the forage system (two-cut vs. one-cut forage) and (3) one fall harvest for the bioenergy system (one-cut bioenergy). Successively harvesting without any fertilizer input resulted in a yield decline in forage biomass over 3 years by approximately 30 % (6.3 to 4.4 Mg DM ha−1 (dry matter) with a rate of 1.0 Mg ha−1 yr−1) in the two-cut forage and by 35 % (4.9 to 3.2 Mg DM ha−1 with a rate of 0.9 Mg ha−1 yr−1) in the one-cut forage systems. The feed quality also decreased over the years by showing declined rates of 12.9 (crucial protein), 0.9 (calcium), 0.7 (copper), and 1.3 g kg−1 DM yr−1 (zinc). Empirical models predicted enteric CH4 emissions from cattle ranged from 225.7 to 242.6 g per cow per day based on the feed nutritive values. In contrast, bioenergy biomass yield increased by 27 % from 4.9 to 6.7 Mg DM ha−1 with a consistent quality (cellulose of ∼ 397.9 g kg−1; hemicellulose of ∼ 299.4 g kg−1), corresponding to the increased total theoretical ethanol yield from 1.8 × 103 to 2.4 × 103 L ha−1 (∼ 33 % increase). Annual nutrient removals of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg were significantly higher in the forage systems (e.g., two-cut: 52.6–106.9 kg N ha−1; one-cut: 44.5–84.1 kg N ha−1) than those in the bioenergy system (e.g., 25.9–34.4 kg N ha−1); however, the removal rate declined rapidly over 3 years (e.g., ∼ 49 % reduction) as the annual biomass yield declined in the forage systems. This on-farm field study demonstrated the potential of the perennial crop used as buffer strip options for biomass production and buffer sustainability at the edge of the field.

Abstract

Abstract This cutting-edge study delves into regional magmatism in northern Taiwan through advanced 3-D P- and S-wave frequency-dependent attenuation tomography. Positioned at the dynamic convergence boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, Taiwan experiences moderate earthquakes and intriguing volcanic activity, with a focus on the Tatun volcano group. Employing the Formosa seismic array for high-resolution results, our research identifies high-attenuation anomalies (low Q) beneath the northern Taiwan volcanic zone (NTVZ) and offshore submarine volcanoes, indicative of potential hydrothermal activities and magma reservoirs at varying depths. Additionally, we explore low-attenuation anomalies (high Q) in the forearc region of the Ryukyu subduction zone, suggestive of partial saturation linked to serpentinization processes resulting from seawater infiltration or forearc mantle hydration. These findings shed light on the complex geological features and provide essential insights into the crustal properties of northern Taiwan, contributing to a deeper understanding of its magmatic evolution and tectonic processes.

Abstract

In this study, we present the performance of an extreme ultraviolet interference lithography (EUV-IL) setup that was reconstructed at Taiwan Light Source 21B2 EUV beamline in the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), Taiwan. An easy-to-perform fabrication method to produce a high-quality transmission grating mask and a simple design of experimental setup for EUV-IL were developed. The current EUV-IL setup is capable of fabricating line/space patterns down to 25 nm half-pitch in hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist. Preliminary exposure results revealed that optimized slit width and exposure time significantly improved line/space pattern quality. The current EUV-IL tool at NSRRC can be used for nano-patterning and resist screening to advance the next generation of semiconductor devices.

6. Unveiling Tatun volcanic plumbing structure induced by post-collisional extension of Taiwan mountain belt

Abstract

Abstract The Tatun Volcanic Group (TVG) is proximal to the metropolis of Taipei City (population of ca. 7 million) and has long been a major concern due to the potential risks from volcanic activity to the population and critical infrastructure. While the TVG has been previously considered a dormant or extinct volcano, recent evidence suggests a much younger age of the last eruption event (~ 6000 years) and possible existence of a magma reservoir beneath the TVG. However, the location, dimension, and detailed geometry of the magma reservoir and plumbing system remains largely unknown. To examine the TVG volcanic plumbing structure in detail, the local P-wave travel time data and the teleseismic waveform data from a new island-wide Formosa Array Project are combined for a 3D tomographic joint inversion. The new model reveals a magma reservoir with a notable P-wave velocity reduction of 19% (ca. ~ 19% melt fraction) at 8–20 km beneath eastern TVG and with possible northward extension to a shallower depth near where active submarine volcanoes that have been detected. Enhanced tomographic images also reveal sporadic magmatic intrusion/underplating in the lower crust of Husehshan Range and northern Taiwan. These findings suggest an active volcanic plumbing system induced by post-collisional extension associated with the collapse of the orogen.

Abstract

Scientists demystify stress changes within tens of days before a mainshock and often utilize its foreshocks as an indicator. Typically, foreshocks are detected near fault zones, which may be due to the distribution of seismometers. This study investigates changes in seismicity far from mainshocks by examining tens of thousands of M≥2 quakes that were monitored by dense seismic arrays for more than 10 years in Taiwan and Japan. The quakes occurred within epicentral distances ranging from 0 to 400 km during a period of 60 d before and after the mainshocks that are utilized to exhibit common behaviors of seismicity in the spatiotemporal domain. The superimposition results show that wide areas exhibit increased seismicity associated with mainshocks occurring more than several times to areas of the fault rupture. The seismicity increase initially concentrates in the fault zones and gradually expands outward to over 50 km away from the epicenters approximately 40 d before the mainshocks. The seismicity increases more rapidly around the fault zones approximately 20 d before the mainshocks. The stressed crust triggers ground vibrations at frequencies varying from ∼5×10-4 to ∼10-3 Hz (i.e., variable frequency) along with earthquake-related stress that migrates from exterior areas to approach the fault zones. The variable frequency is determined by the observation of continuous seismic waveforms through the superimposition processes and is further supported by the resonant frequency model. These results suggest that the variable frequency of ground vibrations is a function of areas with increased seismicity leading to earthquakes.

Abstract

Currently, deployment of UAV has transformed from crucial to day-to-day scenarios for various purposes such as wastage collection, live entertainment, product delivery, town mapping, etc. Object tracking based UAV applications such as traffic monitoring, wildlife monitoring and surveillance have undergone phenomenal changeover due to deep learning based methodologies. With such transformation, there is also lack of resources to practically explore the UAV images and videos with deep learning methodologies. Hence, a deep learning-based object detection and tracking tool with UAV data (DL-ODT-UAV) is proposed to fill the learning gap, especially among students. DL-ODT-UAV is a resource to acquire basic knowledge about UAV and deep learning based object detection and tracking. It integrates various object annotators, object detectors and object tracker. Single object detection and tracking is performed with YOLO as object detector and LSTM as object tracker. Faster R-CNN is adopted in multiple object detection. With exploring the tool, the ability of students to approach problems related to deep learning methodologies will improve to a greater level.

9. Sources of error in open-path FTIR measurements of N2O and CO2 emitted from agricultural fields

Abstract

Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) is susceptible to environmental variables which can become sources of errors for gas quantification. In this study, we assessed the effects of water vapour, temperature, path length, and wind speed on quantitative uncertainties of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) derived from OP-FTIR spectra. The presence of water vapour in spectra underestimated N2O mole fractions by 3 % and 12 %, respectively, from both lab and field experiments using a classical least squares (CLS) model when the reference and sample spectra were collected at the same temperature (i.e. 30 ∘C). Differences in temperature between sample and reference spectra also underestimated N2O mole fractions due to temperature broadening and the increased interferences of water vapour in spectra of wet samples. Changes in path length resulted in a non-linear response of spectra and bias (e.g. N2O and CO2 mole fractions were underestimated by 30 % and 7.5 %, respectively, at the optical path of 100 m using CLS models). For N2O quantification, partial least squares (PLS) models were less sensitive to water vapour, temperature, and path length and provided more accurate estimations than CLS. Uncertainties in the path-averaged mole fractions increased in low-wind conditions ( m s−1). This study identified the most common interferences that affect OP-FTIR measurements of N2O and CO2, which can serve as a quality assurance/control guide for current or future OP-FTIR users.

Abstract

Two existing chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration retrieval procedures, which are analytical and empirical, are hindered by the complexity in radiative transfer equation (RTE) and in statistical analyses, respectively. Another promising model in this direction is the use of artificial neural networks (ANN). Mostly, a pixel-to-pixel with one-layer ANN model is used; where in fact that the satellite instrumental errors and man-made objects in water bodies might affect the retrieval and should be taken into account. In this study, the mask-based neural structure, called convolutional neural networks (CNN) model containing both the target and neighborhood pixels, is proposed to reduce the influence of the aforementioned premises. The proposed model is an end-to-end multiple-layer model which integrates band expansion, feature extraction, and chl-a estimation into the structure, leading to an optimal chl-a concentration retrieval. In addition to that, a two-stage training is also proposed to solve the problem of insufficient in-situ samples which happens in most of the time. In the first stage, the proposed model is trained by using the chl-a concentration derived from the water product, provided by satellite agency, and is refined with the in-situ samples in the second stage. Eight Sentinel-3 images from different acquisition time and coincide in-situ measurements over Laguna Lake waters of Philippines were utilized to conduct the model training and testing. Based on quantitative accuracy assessment, the proposed method outperformed the existing dual- and triple- bands combinations in chl-a concentration retrieval.

Abstract

Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) has often been used to measure hazardous or trace gases from hot point sources (e.g. volcano, industrial, or agricultural facilities) but seldom used to measure greenhouse gases (GHGs) from field-scale sources (e.g. agricultural soils). Closed-path mid-IR laser-based N2O, nondispersive-IR CO2 analysers, and OP-FTIR were used to measure concentrations of N2O and CO2 at a maize cropping system during 9–19 June 2014. To measure N2O and CO2 concentrations accurately, we developed a quantitative method of N2O∕CO2 analysis that minimized interferences from diurnal changes of humidity and temperature. Two chemometric multivariate models, classical least squares (CLS) and partial least squares (PLS), were developed. This study evaluated various methods to generate the single-beam background spectra and different spectral regions for determining N2O and CO2 concentrations from OP-FTIR spectra. A standard extractive method was used to measure the actual path-averaged concentrations along an OP-FTIR optical path in situ, as a benchmark to assess the feasibilities of these quantitative methods. Within an absolute humidity range of 5000–20 000 ppmv and a temperature range of 10–35 ∘C, we found that the CLS model underestimated N2O concentrations (bias =-4.9±3.1 %) calculated from OP-FTIR spectra, and the PLS model improved the accuracy of calculated N2O concentrations (bias =1.4±2.3 %). The bias of calculated CO2 concentrations was -1.0±2.8 % using the CLS model. These methods suggested that environmental variables potentially lead to biases in N2O and CO2 estimations from OP-FTIR spectra and may help OP-FTIR users avoid dependency on extractive methods of calibrations.

12. IMAGE-BASED AIRBORNE LiDAR POINT CLOUD ENCODING FOR 3D BUILDING MODEL RETRIEVAL

Abstract

With the development of Web 2.0 and cyber city modeling, an increasing number of 3D models have been available on web-based model-sharing platforms with many applications such as navigation, urban planning, and virtual reality. Based on the concept of data reuse, a 3D model retrieval system is proposed to retrieve building models similar to a user-specified query. The basic idea behind this system is to reuse these existing 3D building models instead of reconstruction from point clouds. To efficiently retrieve models, the models in databases are compactly encoded by using a shape descriptor generally. However, most of the geometric descriptors in related works are applied to polygonal models. In this study, the input query of the model retrieval system is a point cloud acquired by Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems because of the efficient scene scanning and spatial information collection. Using Point clouds with sparse, noisy, and incomplete sampling as input queries is more difficult than that by using 3D models. Because that the building roof is more informative than other parts in the airborne LiDAR point cloud, an image-based approach is proposed to encode both point clouds from input queries and 3D models in databases. The main goal of data encoding is that the models in the database and input point clouds can be consistently encoded. Firstly, top-view depth images of buildings are generated to represent the geometry surface of a building roof. Secondly, geometric features are extracted from depth images based on height, edge and plane of building. Finally, descriptors can be extracted by spatial histograms and used in 3D model retrieval system. For data retrieval, the models are retrieved by matching the encoding coefficients of point clouds and building models. In experiments, a database including about 900,000 3D models collected from the Internet is used for evaluation of data retrieval. The results of the proposed method show a clear superiority over related methods.

13. CLOUD DETECTION OF OPTICAL SATELLITE IMAGES USING SUPPORT VECTOR MACHINE

Abstract

Cloud covers are generally present in optical remote-sensing images, which limit the usage of acquired images and increase the difficulty of data analysis, such as image compositing, correction of atmosphere effects, calculations of vegetation induces, land cover classification, and land cover change detection. In previous studies, thresholding is a common and useful method in cloud detection. However, a selected threshold is usually suitable for certain cases or local study areas, and it may be failed in other cases. In other words, thresholding-based methods are data-sensitive. Besides, there are many exceptions to control, and the environment is changed dynamically. Using the same threshold value on various data is not effective. In this study, a threshold-free method based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) is proposed, which can avoid the abovementioned problems. A statistical model is adopted to detect clouds instead of a subjective thresholding-based method, which is the main idea of this study. The features used in a classifier is the key to a successful classification. As a result, Automatic Cloud Cover Assessment (ACCA) algorithm, which is based on physical characteristics of clouds, is used to distinguish the clouds and other objects. In the same way, the algorithm called Fmask (Zhu et al., 2012) uses a lot of thresholds and criteria to screen clouds, cloud shadows, and snow. Therefore, the algorithm of feature extraction is based on the ACCA algorithm and Fmask. Spatial and temporal information are also important for satellite images. Consequently, co-occurrence matrix and temporal variance with uniformity of the major principal axis are used in proposed method. We aim to classify images into three groups: cloud, non-cloud and the others. In experiments, images acquired by the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and images containing the landscapes of agriculture, snow area, and island are tested. Experiment results demonstrate the detection accuracy of the proposed method is better than related methods.

Abstract

Based on two summer spatio-temporal data sets obtained from the northern South China Sea shelf and basin, this study reveals contrasting relationships among bacterial production (BP), dissolved organic (DOC) and primary production (PP) in the transition zone from the neritic to the oceanic regions. Inside the mid-shelf (bottom depth 100 days in the outer shelf, indicating that riverine (Pearl River) DOC might be more labile. The actual mechanism for this is unknown, but might relate to higher inorganic nutrient supply from river/terrestrial sources. The positive correlation of the BP / PP ratios vs. phosphate (and nitrate) concentrations in the inner shelf implies that if anthropogenic mineral loading keeps increasing in the foreseeable future, the near-shore zone may become more heterotrophic, rendering the system a stronger source of CO2.

15. Anomalous frequency characteristics of groundwater level before major earthquakes in Taiwan

Abstract

Unusual decreases of water levels were consistently observed in 78% (= 42/54) of wells in the Choshuichi Alluvial Fan of central Taiwan about 250 days before the Chi-Chi earthquake (M = 7.6 on 20 September 1999) while possible factors of barometric pressure, earth tides, precipitation as well as artificial pumping were removed. Variations in groundwater levels measured on anomalous wells from 1 August 1997 to 19 September 1999, which covers the 250 day unusual decreases, were transferred into the frequency domain to unveil frequency characteristics associated with the Chi-Chi earthquake. Analytical results show that amplitudes at the frequency band between 0.02 day−1 and 0.04 day−1 generally maintained at the low stage and were apparently enhanced a few weeks before the Chi-Chi earthquake. Variations of amplitude at this particular frequency band were further examined along with other Taiwan earthquakes (M > 6) from 1 August 1997 to 31 December 2009. Features of the enhanced amplitudes at the frequency band are consistently observed prior to the other two earthquakes (the Rei-Li and Ming-Jian earthquakes) during the 12.5 yr study period. In addition, surface displacements recorded from GPS, which provides insights into understanding stress status in subsurface during the Chi-Chi earthquake, are also inspected. The result confirms that abnormal rise and fall changes in groundwater level yield an agreement with forward and backward surface displacements around the epicentre prior to the Chi-Chi earthquake.

Abstract

The Tatun Volcano Group (TVG) is located in northern Taiwan near the capital Taipei. In this study we selected and analyzed almost four years (2004–2007) of its seismic activity. The seismic network established around TVG initially consisted of eight three-component seismic stations with this number increasing to twelve by 2007. Local seismicity mainly involved high frequency (HF) earthquakes occurring as isolated events or as part of spasmodic bursts. Mixed and low frequency (LF) events were observed during the same period but more rarely. During the analysis we estimated duration magnitudes for the HF earthquakes and used a probabilistic non-linear method to accurately locate all these events. The complex frequencies of LF events were also analyzed with the Sompi method indicating fluid compositions consistent with a misty or dusty gas. We juxtaposed these results with geochemical/temperature anomalies extracted from fumarole gas and rainfall levels covering a similar period. This comparison is interpreted in the context of a model proposed earlier for the volcano-hydrothermal system of TVG where fluids and magmatic gases ascend from a magma body that lies at around 7–8 km depth. Most HF earthquakes occur as a response to stresses induced by fluid circulation within a dense network of cracks pervading the upper crust at TVG. The largest (ML ~ 3.1) HF event that occurred on 24 April 2006 at a depth of 5–6 km had source characteristics compatible with that of a tensile crack. It was followed by an enrichment in magmatic components of the fumarole gases as well as a fumarole temperature increase, and provides evidence for ascending fluids from a magma body into the shallow hydrothermal system. This detailed analysis and previous physical volcanology observations at TVG suggest that the region is volcanically active and that measures to mitigate potential hazards have to be considered by the local authorities.

17. Ozone reservoir layers in a coastal environment – a case study in southern Taiwan

Abstract

The air layer between the nocturnal boundary layer and the top of the daily mixing layer in an ozone-polluted area is known to serve as an ozone reservoir since the ozone that is produced in the mixing layer on the preceding day is effectively preserved throughout the night in the air layer. Ozone reservoir layers existing at night can enhance the accumulation of surface ozone on the following day. However, our knowledge of the characteristics of ozone reservoir layers and their effects on the daily ozone accumulations is limited. In this work, ozone reservoir layers were experimentally investigated at a coastal, near-mountain site in southern Taiwan, 30 km away from the coastline. Tethered ozone soundings were performed to obtain vertical profiles of ozone and meteorological variables during a four-day ozone episode in November 2006. Observation-based methods are adopted to evaluate the effects of the ozone reservoir layers on the surface ozone accumulation during the four-day ozone episode. Ozone reservoir layers were found to develop every evening with a depth of 1200–1400 m. Ozone concentrations within the reservoir layers reached over 140 parts per billion (ppb). From each evening to midnight, the size of the ozone reservoir layer and the ozone concentration inside dramatically changed. As a result, a concentrated, elevated ozone reservoir layer formed with a depth of 400 m at 800–1200 m every midnight. For the rest of each night, the elevated ozone reservoir layer gradually descended until it reached 500–900 m in the next morning. The observed ozone reservoir layer is formed by the invasion of a cool, marine air mass into a relatively warm, ozone-rich mixing layer in the evening. The descending is related to nocturnal coastal subsidence as well. The ozone concentration at the study site was maximal at 15:00–17:00 LT daily because of the addition of the daily produced ozone on the preceding day. The rate of increase of surface ozone concentration due to the downward mixing of the ozone in the ozone reservoir layers can be as high as 12–24 ppb/h in the late morning. The contribution of the ozone carried over from the preceding day can be 60–85 ppb, which contributes over 50% to the daily ozone pollution as compared with ozone produced on the study day.

Abstract

The Tonga volcano eruption of 15 January 2022 unleashed a variety of atmospheric perturbations, coinciding with the recovery-phase of a geomagnetic storm. The ensuing thermospheric variations created rare display of extreme poleward-expanding conjugate plasma bubbles seen in the rate of total electron content index over 100–150°E, reaching ∼40°N geographic latitude. This is associated with fluctuations in FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (F7/C2) ion-density measurements and spread-F in ionograms. Preceding to this, an unusually strong pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) occurred in the global ionospheric specification (GIS) electron density profiles derived from F7/C2 observations. The GIS also revealed a decrease of equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest density due to the storm impact. Reduced E-region conductivity by volcano-induced waves and enhanced F-region wind, further accelerated by reduced ion-drag over the EIA, apparently intensified the PRE. Accompanied with the strong PRE, volcano-induced seed perturbations triggered the super plasma bubble activity.

Abstract

The explosive eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano in the southwest Pacific at 0415UT on 15 January 2022 triggered gigantic atmospheric disturbances with surface air pressure waves propagating around the globe in Lamb mode. In space, concentric traveling ionosphere disturbances (CTIDs) are also observed as a manifestation of air pressure waves in New Zealand ∼0500UT and Australia ∼0630UT. As soon as the air pressure waves reached central Australia ∼0800UT, conjugate CTIDs appeared almost simultaneously in the northern hemispheres through interhemispheric coupling, much earlier than the arrival of the surface air pressure waves to Japan after 1100UT. Combining observations over Australia and Japan between 0800 and 1000UT, both direct and conjugate CTIDs show similar horizontal phase velocities of 320–390 m/s, matching with the dispersion relation of Lamb mode. The arrival of atmospheric Lamb wave to Japan later created in situ CTIDs showing the same Lamb mode characteristics as the earlier conjugate CTIDs.

32. Conjugate Effect of the 2011 Tohoku Reflected Tsunami-Driven Gravity Waves in the Ionosphere

Abstract

This study presents the conjugate ionospheric disturbances triggered by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki reflected tsunami oceanic waves using the ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) total electron content (TEC) observations. We found that the equatorward and westward propagating nighttime medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) occurred over Japan and Australia simultaneously following the tsunami oceanic waves reflected by the Emperor Seamount Chain in the northern hemisphere. The atmospheric gravity waves driven by reflected tsunami oceanic waves are hypothesized to be the source to trigger the conjugate MSTIDs by transporting the polarization electric fields along the field line to the conjugate hemisphere. Moreover, only the southwestward propagating MSTIDs have this conjugate effect, which could be due to the wavefront orientation. The Perkins instability could also be involved in the interhemispheric coupling process. This study provides the first observational evidence that the reflected tsunami can induce conjugate ionospheric disturbances through electrodynamic forcing.

34. Day-to-Day Variability of Ionosphere Electron Density During Solar Minimum Derived From FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 Measurements

Abstract

This study examines the day-to-day variability of low-latitude ionosphere using global ionospheric specification (GIS) electron density profiles derived from FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 radio occultation measurements during a deep solar minimum period of August 2019 to July 2020. The measurements reveal significant daily variations over dayside low latitudes, yielding about 10-20% standard deviation in equinoxes, 20-30% in solstices, reaching 40-50% in winter. The nighttime deviations could be 30-60%, being largest in solstices. Day-to-day variations are also observed in the longitudinal wave-4 structures. The period mostly remained geomagnetically quiet except for some moderate disturbances on a few days. Tidal decomposition of the GIS electron density shows that in-situ forced migrating diurnal (DW1) terdiurnal (TW3) oscillations and the background zonal mean yield only ~25% of the daily variations despite accounting for almost 75-90% of the observed electron density. Thus, forcing from lower atmosphere dominates the contribution (~75%) to the observed daily variations. Only about one third of this lower atmospheric forcing comes from the migrating semidiurnal SW2 and the usually investigated non-migrating diurnal eastward DE2, DE3, stationary planetary wave SPW3, SPW4, and semidiurnal eastward SE1, and SE2 components. The residual tides other than those mentioned above, including secondary waves through non-linear interactions and other planetary waves, thus significantly influence the day-to-day variations in electron density and modify the longitudinal wave structures.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate postoperative relapse after the surgical correction of skeletal Class III deformities of various facial patterns as a guide to surgical planning. A retrospective cohort study of 90 consecutive patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery was performed. The surgical outcomes and postoperative stability were compared. The primary predictor variable was vertical facial type, which was classified into three groups according to the Frankfort mandibular plane angle (FMA). The primary outcome of angular and linear measurements was obtained using serial cone beam computed tomography scans obtained at time points of preoperative, 1 week after surgery, and orthodontic debonding. No significant difference in skeletal relapse was observed in patients with the different vertical facial types. The mandible displayed a forward and upward relapse in all three groups postoperatively. The patients with a low FMA exhibited a more consistent mandibular relapse pattern than those with a normal or high FMA. These findings suggest that bimaxillary surgery is clinically stable for mandibular prognathism regardless of the vertical facial pattern. However, 1-1.5 mm of overcorrection in the mandible setback should be considered in patients with a low FMA, because of the greater facial depth and consistent forward and upward mandibular relapse pattern.
