Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

Abstract

Abstract The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.

The present study was aimed at investigating the adverse effects of dietary zearalenone (ZEA) (1.1 to 3.2 mg/kg diet) on serum hormones, morphologic and apoptotic measurements of genital organs in post-weaning gilts. A total of twenty gilts (Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc) weaned at 21 d with an average body weight of 10.36±1.21 kg were used in the study. Abstract

In transgenic plants, for many applications it is important that the inserted genes are expressed in a tissue-specific manner. This in turn could help better understanding their roles in plant development. Germin-like proteins (GLPs) play diverse roles in plant development and defense responses. In order to understand the functions and regulation of the GLP13 gene, its promoter (762 bp) was cloned and fused with a β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene for transient expression in Arabidopsis thaliana and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. K326). Histochemical analysis of the transgenic plants showed that GUS was specifically expressed in vascular bundles predominantly in phloem tissue of all organs in Arabidopsis. Further analyses in transgenic tobacco also identified similar GUS expression in the vascular bundles.

Abstract

The ABC1 protein family (ABC1P), a new family of putative kinases, widely existed in procaryote and eucaryote. A comprehensive genome-wide analysis was carried out in this study to find all ABC1Ps in rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica). We identified 15 ABC1P genes in rice. All the ABC1Ps contained an ABC1 domain of about 120 conserved amino acid residues and conserved kinase motifs-VAIK (VAVK, VAMK) and DFG (DEG). The phylogenetic analysis showed that all the ABC1Ps were grouped into three subgroups, and formed a total of 12 sister pairs. Conserved motifs analysed by MEME program indicated that almost all ABC1Ps contains motifs 1, 3, 7, 8 and 9. Predictably, the ABC1Ps were localized in mitochondria or chloroplasts, which implied that the ABC1Ps might be involved in energy metabolism in plants. RT-PCR assays demonstrated that all 15 ABC1P genes were active, and some of them were affected by abiotic stresses (NaCl, high temperature, methyl viologen, abscisic acid and cadmium).

Abstract

Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract

The kilometer square array (KM2A) of the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO) aims at surveying the northern γ-ray sky at energies above 10 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity. γ-ray observations have long been one of the most powerful tools for dark matter searches, as, e.g., high-energy γ rays could be produced by the decays of heavy dark matter particles. In this Letter, we present the first dark matter analysis with LHAASO-KM2A, using the first 340 days of data from 1/2-KM2A and 230 days of data from 3/4-KM2A. Several regions of interest are used to search for a signal and account for the residual cosmic-ray background after γ/hadron separation. We find no excess of dark matter signals, and thus place some of the strongest γ-ray constraints on the lifetime of heavy dark matter particles with mass between 105 and 109 GeV. Our results with LHAASO are robust, and have important implications for dark matter interpretations of the diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino emission.

Abstract

The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition of primary particles. The system has been running for more than one year. In this paper, the details of the design and performance of WCDA++ are presented.

Abstract

The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators. Observations of γ-rays with energies up to 1.4 PeV find that 12 sources in the Galaxy are PeVatrons, one of which is the Crab Nebula.

Abstract

1. The thymus and bursa of Fabricius are important immune organs in poultry as they play essential roles in sustaining the normal immune function to maintain health. The following trial investigated whether the stocking density affected gene expressions in immune organs. 2. Jinding ducklings were raised in either low or high density (4 or 8 birds/m2) conditions from four to 14 weeks of age, and were then slaughtered and tissues removed. Samples were subjected to high-throughput sequencing to sequence RNA extraction. After filtering calculations with R software, a total of 508 (thymus) and 1,356 (bursa of Fabricius) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, suggesting that stocking density has an effect on gene expression in duck immune organs. 3. Out of a total of 112 immune factor genes and 112 immune pattern receptor genes in ducks, four thymus and 18 bursa of Fabricius genes were differentially expressed in ducks, which indicated that the change of stocking density could affect the expression of immune genes in poultry.

Abstract

We report the discovery of a new unidentified extended $\gamma$-ray source in the Galactic plane named LHAASO J0341+5258 with a pre-trial significance of 8.2 standard deviations above 25 TeV. The best fit position is R.A.$=55.34^{\circ}\pm0.11^{\circ}$ and Dec$=52.97^{\circ}\pm0.07^{\circ}$. The angular size of LHAASO J0341+5258 is $0.29^\circ \pm 0.06^\circ_{stat} \pm0.02^\circ_{sys}$. The flux above 25 TeV is about $20\%$ of the flux of Crab Nebula. Although a power-law fit of the spectrum from 10 TeV to 200 TeV with the photon index $\alpha=2.98 \pm 0.19_{stat} \pm 0.02_{sys}$ is not excluded, the LHAASO data together with the flux upper limit at 10 GeV set by the Fermi LAT observation, indicate a noticeable steepening of an initially hard power-law spectrum %($\alpha \leq 1.75$) spectrum with a cutoff at $\approx 50$ TeV. We briefly discuss the origin of UHE gamma-rays. The lack of an energetic pulsar and a young SNR inside or in the vicinity of LHAASO J0341+5258 challenge, but do not exclude both the leptonic and hadronic scenarios of gamma-ray production., Comment: Accepted by APJL

15. The interface design of storage and examination system for BWR spent nuclear fuel dry storage demonstration project in Taiwan

Abstract

Due to the lack of Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fuel examination data after dry storage, Taiwan Power Company and Institute of Nuclear Energy Research jointly launched the “Taiwan Nuclear Fuel Storage Demonstration Project” to collect fuel characteristics data under simulated dry storage. To meet the project requirements, BWR fuel rods in different fuel designs will be selected and then store in simulated storage containers in different environments for 10 years. The interface considerations and design results of the auxiliary equipment for spent nuclear fuel storage, transfer, and non-destructive testing in the simulation stage of spent fuel dry storage were summarized. In addition, the possibility of operating at high heating power and avoiding deformation of the components due to thermal extension of the storage containers after heating was included in the design consideration. A simplification concept was introduced, with frequent NDT (Non-destructive Testing) inspections that will be performed through the spent fuel transfer process. The test results showed that the interface design can meet the requirements of long-term experiment, maintenance and radiation protection requirements, and is ready for further demonstration.

Abstract

Recently, the LHAASO Collaboration published the detection of 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources above 100 TeV, with the highest energy photon reaching 1.4 PeV. The first detection of PeV γ rays from astrophysical sources may provide a very sensitive probe of the effect of the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV), which results in decay of high-energy γ rays in the superluminal scenario and hence a sharp cutoff of the energy spectrum. Two highest energy sources are studied in this work. No signature of the existence of the LIV is found in their energy spectra, and the lower limits on the LIV energy scale are derived. Our results show that the first-order LIV energy scale should be higher than about 10^{5} times the Planck scale M_{Pl} and that the second-order LIV scale is10^{-3}M_{Pl}. Both limits improve by at least one order of magnitude the previous results.

Abstract

We report the discovery of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source around the location of the middle-aged (207.8 kyr) pulsar PSR J0622+3749 with the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The source is detected with a significance of 8.2σ for E25 TeV assuming a Gaussian template. The best-fit location is (right ascension, declination) =(95.47°±0.11°,37.92°±0.09°), and the extension is 0.40°±0.07°. The energy spectrum can be described by a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.92±0.17_{stat}±0.02_{sys}. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of the LHAASO source has been found from the radio to sub-TeV bands. The LHAASO observations are consistent with the scenario that VHE electrons escaped from the pulsar, diffused in the interstellar medium, and scattered the interstellar radiation field. If interpreted as the pulsar halo scenario, the diffusion coefficient, inferred for electrons with median energies of ∼160 TeV, is consistent with those obtained from the extended halos around Geminga and Monogem and much smaller than that derived from cosmic ray secondaries. The LHAASO discovery of this source thus likely enriches the class of so-called pulsar halos and confirms that high-energy particles generally diffuse very slowly in the disturbed medium around pulsars.

Abstract

We report the discovery of a UHE gamma-ray source, LHAASO J2108+5157, by analyzing the LHAASO-KM2A data of 308.33 live days. Significant excess of gamma-ray induced showers is observed in both energy bands of 25-100 TeV and $\gt$100 TeV with 9.5 sigma and 8.5 sigma, respectively. This source is not significantly favored as an extensive source with the angular extension smaller than the point-spread function of KM2A. The measured energy spectrum from 20 to 200 TeV can be approximately described by a power-law function with an index of -2.83$\pm$ 0.18stat. A harder spectrum is demanded at lower energies considering the flux upper limit set by Fermi-LAT observations. The position of the gamma-ray emission is correlated with a giant molecular cloud, which favors a hadronic origin. No obvious counterparts have been found, deeper multiwavelength observations will help to shed new light on this intriguing UHE source., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJL

Abstract

The main scientific goal of the LHAASO WFCTA experiment is to measure the cosmic ray energy spectra and composition from 10 TeV to 1 EeV. Cherenkov photons in the extensive air shower measured by the SiPM camera of Cherenkov telescopes can be used to reconstruct the cosmic ray energy. The absolute calibration of the camera is a crucial step to achieve the accurate measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum. A multi-wavelength cylindrical illuminator based on LEDs is developed and mounted inside the telescope to calibrate and monitor the camera, and the illuminator’s stability is better than 0.5% under the temperature variation from -26 to 26 ° C. A portable probe with a single photoelectron resolution of 21.6% is developed. After calibration by National Institute of Metrology, China (NIM), the probe is taken to the LHAASO site to measure the absolute photon density of the cylindrical illuminator inside the telescope. Based on the illuminator with known photon density, the photon conversion factor of the camera can be calibrated, and the overall calibration uncertainty is less than 2.6%.

Abstract

We report observations of a transient source \fermi\ from radio to \grs. \fermi\ was discovered by the {\it Fermi-LAT} in May 2017. Follow-up {\it Swift-XRT} observations revealed three flaring episodes through March 2018, and the peak X-ray flux is about $10^3$ higher than the {\it ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS)} flux upper limit. Optical spectral measurements taken by the {\it Magellan 6.5-m telescope} and the {\it Lick-Shane telescope} both show a largely featureless spectrum, strengthening the BL Lac interpretation first proposed by \citet{Bruni18}. The optical and mid-infrared (MIR) emission goes to a higher state in 2018, when the flux in high energies goes down to a lower level. Our {\it RATAN-600m} measurements at 4.8~GHz and 8.2~GHz do not indicate any significant radio flux variation over the monitoring seasons in 2017 and 2018, nor deviate from the archival {\it NVSS} flux level. During GeV flaring times, the spectrum is very hard ($\Gamma_\gamma\sim$1.7) in the GeV band and at times also very hard (($\Gamma_{\rm X}\lesssim2$) in the X-rays, similar to a high-synchrotron-peak (or even an extreme) BL Lac object, making \fermi\ a good target for ground-based {\it Cherenkov telescopes}., Comment: Submitted in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Abstract

Background. The widespread use of multi-agent systems conception and technologies of the semantic Web, as well as the beginning of their active joint use in the design and implementation of information systems, requires the development of new adequate methods and tools for their design. Materials and methods. The studies were performed using ontological and agent-based approaches to modelling, semantic Web technologies, as well as provisions of the theories of graph transformations and Petri nets. Results. An approach to ontological modelling of multi-agent systems of the semantic Web is proposed. This approach is demonstrated by an example of a multiagent system in the Smart Grid for marketing operations. Within the framework of the proposed approach, a method for implementing Petri nets based on ontologies and the SPARQL Update language has been developed. Conclusions: The proposed multi-model approach to ontological modelling of systems is effective because it allows the description of not only the statics of the system, but also its dynamics, which was demonstrated by examples. The SPARQL Update language is the most convenient and powerful tool for implementing this approach.

Abstract

The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is a major component of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Array Observatory (LHAASO), a new generation cosmic-ray experiment with unprecedented sensitivity, currently under construction. The WCDA is aimed at the study of TeV $\gamma$-rays. In order to evaluate the prospects of searching for TeV $\gamma$-ray sources with the WCDA, we present in this paper a projection for the one-year sensitivity of the WCDA to TeV $\gamma$-ray sources from TeVCat (footnote: http://tevcat.uchicago.edu) using an all-sky approach. Out of 128 TeVCat sources observable to the WCDA up to a zenith angle of $45^\circ$, we estimate that 42 would be detectable for one year of observations at a median energy of 1 TeV. Abstract

As a basic characteristic of cosmic ray (CR) propagation, the diffusive halo can advance our understanding of many CR-related studies and indirect dark matter. The method to derive the halo size usually has degeneracy problems thus affected by large uncertainties. The diffusion gamma ray from high-latitude clouds might shed light on the halo size independently. Since the spatially dependent propagation (SDP) model has a better agreement with the observed CRs, compared with conventional propagation model, in this work, we investigate the halo thickness based on SDP model with Fermi-LAT $\rm\gamma$-ray observation on the high- and intermediate-velocity clouds. As a result, in order not to exceed the relative $\gamma$-ray emissivity in the high-latitude clouds, halo thickness should be in the range of $\rm ~3.3\sim9~ kpc$. Moreover, the spatial morphology of $\rm\gamma$-rays estimated based on SDP model under different values of halo thickness are distinctive, which provides us a tool to determine the halo size. Abstract

Considering the unique operation of each nuclear power plant and lack of BWR fuel examination data after dry storage, the Taiwan Power Company and Institute of Nuclear Energy Research conduct the “The Nuclear Fuel Storage Demonstration Project in Taiwan” to collect the data of the fuel characteristics under dry storage. In this project, BWR fuel rods among different fuel designs and fuel venders will be loaded into a simulated storage cask for 10 years. Different temperatures and environments will be adopted, for simulated normal storage condition and acceleration experiments be performed. Non-destructed examinations will be executed prior to loading the fuel rods and periodically during storage. After 10 years, the fuel rods will be extracted and examined non-destructively and destructively. This paper summarized the methodology to demonstrate the adequacy of spent fuel dry storage, the design and fabrication of the simulated storage containers, the results of performance test and the project progress. Two containers will be used in the prospective experiments; one is for the normal storage condition. The other is for accelerated experiments and various storage conditions. After completion of this project, the collected data and research results will be compared with other international projects to provide the technical basis in Taiwan.

27. Methodology to incorporate damaged BWR spent fuel as contents in the NAC-UMS® storage system

Abstract

Following Taiwan’s nuclear waste management policy, INER launched Taiwan’s first Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) project in 2005. The technology of dry storage system adopted is NAC-UMS system. INER made some design modifications of NAC-UMS system in order to accommodate the constraints at Chin-Shan Nuclear Power Plant (CSNPP). The modified UMS was named as INER High Performance System (INER-HPS). The corresponding Safety Analysis Report (SAR) of ISFSI was approved by AEC on November of 2008. Through years of dedication, the first dry run test has been accomplished on November 2012. INER-HPS is capable to cover most of the spent fuels dry storage needs in Taiwan with current NAC-UMS License. The current CoC for NAC-UMS includes undamaged BWR fuel with a burn-up of not greater than 45 GWD/MTU. For the purpose of NAC-UMS to incorporate damaged BWR fuel as approved contents, INER and NAC further enter into cooperation to developing and licensing NAC-UMS to include up to four BWR damaged fuel cans and a new BWR damaged fuel basket. This paper summarized the project progress, results of trial fabrication of damaged fuel can, and the methodology to incorporate damaged BWR spent fuel as contents in the NAC-UMS storage system.

Abstract

The LHAASO-WFCTA experiment, which aims to observe cosmic rays in the sub-EeV range using the fluorescence technique, uses a new generation of high-performance telescopes. To ensure that the experiment has excellent detection capability associated with the measurement of the energy spectrum, the primary composition of cosmic rays, and so on, an accurate geometrical reconstruction of air-shower events is fundamental. This paper describes the development and testing of geometrical reconstruction for stereo viewed events using the WFCTA (Wide Field of view Cherenkov/Fluorescence Telescope Array) detectors. Two approaches, which take full advantage of the WFCTA detectors, are investigated. One is the stereo-angular method, which uses the pointing of triggered SiPMs in the shower trajectory, and the other is the stereo-timing method, which uses the triggering time of the fired SiPMs. The results show that both methods have good geometrical resolution; the resolution of the stereo-timing method is slightly better than the stereo-angular method because the resolution of the latter is slightly limited by the shower track length.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the expression of TRPM7 in the serum of patients with sepsis and its influences on inflammatory factors and prognosis.A prospective analysis was performed. 78 patients with sepsis were enrolled in the experimental group and treated from May 2015 to April 2017 in the Emergency Department of The Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University, and 75 healthy people were collected in the control group and received physical examinations during the same period. Real-time quantitative PCR was used to detect the relative expression of TRPM7, and sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to measure the serum expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 in patients. Besides, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was drawn to analyze the diagnostic value of TRPM7.The serum level of TRPM7 mRNA in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group (p0.05). The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p0.05). The optimal cut-off point value for the diagnosis of sepsis was 0.841; the specificity was 86%, and the sensitivity was 99%. Based on the survival data of the experimental group and the average expression level of TRPM7 which was 1.38, patients with a TRPM7 expression level less than 1.38 were divided into the low expression group, while those with a TRPM7 expression level equal or more than 1.38 were divided into the high expression group. The survival rate of the high expression group was significantly lower than that of the low expression group (p0.05).In summary, TRPM7, with high expression level in the serum of patients with sepsis is expected to be a potential prognostic indicator for sepsis.

Abstract

A sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to observe a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for γ-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the KM2A data analysis pipeline and the first observation of the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy γ-ray astronomy. We detect γ-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10 100 TeV and 100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance, including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic-ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE = (1.13 0.05 0.08 ) 10 (E/20 TeV) cm s TeV . It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. This opens a new window of γ-ray astronomy above 0.1 PeV through which new ultrahigh-energy γ-ray phenomena, such as cosmic PeVatrons, might be discovered.

Abstract

The present study investigates curcumin effect against sepsis-induced chronic lung injury (CLI) of male albino rats. Rats were grouped into four groups such rats undergoing a sham cecal ligature puncture (CLP), rats undergoing CLP, rats undergoing CLP and treated with saline and rats undergoing CLP and treated with curcumin (100 mg/kg bwt). After 45 days of treatment, bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF), blood and lung tissues were collected from the each animal. The total protein content, wet and dry (W/D) weight of lung tissues and some inflammatory cells in the BALF were measured. Histopathological analysis was carried out to investigate the alteration of the cellular architecture of lung tissues. Lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were determined. Cytokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) and macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF) were measured in the BALF. Curcumin administration significantly reduced CLP-induced inflammation and pulmonary edema. Curcumin treatment is significantly reduced MPO activity, and inflammatory cell accumulation in the BALF and also protein level, MDA, SOD, and W/D ratio were significantly reduced in the lung tissues. Also, curcumin reduced the expression of IL-A, TNF-a and MIF levels in the lung tissues. Histopathological study revealed the significant reduction of CLP-induced CLI in the curcumin-treated male albino rats. Taking all these data together, it is concluded that curcumin can act as a suitable therapeutic agent against CLP-induced CLI of male albino rats.

Abstract

In this research, effect of minor alloying element Ca on microstructure, mechanical and bio-corrosion properties of as-cast Mg–3Zn–0.3Zr–xCa (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9) alloys were investigated for biomedical application. The result showed that Ca played a dual role in mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. With minor Ca addition, the microstructure of the alloy is significantly refined and more uniform. The elongation, tensile strength and corrosion resistance of the studied alloys increases and then decreases with the increase of Ca content. With increasing the Ca content to 0.6 wt-%, the new strip phase of Ca2Mg6Zn3 can be found, and gives the best strength and corrosion resistance. It was thought that the alteration of the second phase and the microstructure affect the mechanical and bio-corrosion properties.

Abstract

PbO 2 and SnO 2 are two promising anode materials for electrochemical oxidation. In order to highlight the difference between two kinds of electrodes in an electrochemical oxidation process, their morphology, structural, oxygen evolution overpotential (OEP), electrochemical activity and service life-time were compared in detail in this paper. Surface characterization by scanning electron microscope shows that the film of the PbO 2 electrode is even, compact, non-porous, and non-cracked, while many cracks are present on the film of the SnO 2 electrode. Electrochemical studies based on linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) prove that the OEP for the SnO 2 electrode was much higher than that of the PbO 2 electrode, and the electron-transfer kinetics and the reversibility of electrode reaction of the SnO 2 electrode were superior to those of the PbO 2 electrode. In electrochemical decomposition of p -nitrophenol, the degradation ratios at PbO 2 and SnO 2 anodes achieved 86.9% and 96.5%, respectively, after 120 min electrolysis, which verified the results of LSV and CV. The accelerated lifetime tests show that the service life time of the SnO 2 electrode is far shorter than that of the PbO 2 electrode, even though it was shown to be superior to the PbO 2 in electrocatalytic activity.

34. Contribution of High-energy GRB Emissions to the Spectrum of the Isotropic Diffuse γ-Ray Background

Abstract

High-precision measurement of the isotropic diffuse γ-ray background (IGRB) has been extrapolated to the TeV energy region using the Fermi-LAT experiment. Various kinds of astrophysical sources are candidates for its origin. However, a consensus on the dominant source has been difficult to reach. Recent observations of the γ-ray emission of γ-ray bursts (GRBs), denoted as the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) component in the afterglow phase, in the sub-TeV energy region by MAGIC and HESS experiments shed new light on this topic. In this work, we revisit the contribution from the SSC component of GRBs to the IGRB. First, a sample set of GRB events is obtained and examined using observations from Fermi-LAT. Second, the SSC component, described by the energy ratio R ext and spectral index β ext, is assigned to every GRB event. We can obtain the total spectrum contribution based on this GRB sample. We find that when R ext and β ext reach ∼20% and −1.6, respectively, the contribution from GRB emission dominates in the energy region of hundreds of GeV. We hope that the LHAASO and CTA experiments under construction can observe a large number of GRBs to fix those parameters in coming years. A surviving tail is expected, which can serve to check our calculations based on future satellite experiments such as HERD and GAMMA400.

Abstract

To explore the role of microRNA-326 in myocardial fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI) and its underlying mechanism.MI rat model was constructed via left anterior descending artery (LAD) ligation. Infarct tissues, infarct border zone tissues and remote zone tissues were harvested at postoperative 1st, 2nd, and 4th week, respectively. The mRNA levels of microRNA-325, collagen I, fibronectin, and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in the above tissues were detected by qRT-PCR (quantitative Real-time polymerase chain reaction). In vivo microRNA-325 upregulation was achieved by myocardial injection of microRNA-325 lentivirus. The effect of overexpressed microRNA-325 on overall survival (OS) and infarcted size was detected. Echocardiography was performed to evaluate rat cardiac function. Myocardial fibrosis affected by overexpressed microRNA-325 was evaluated via detecting α-SMA expression. Primary cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) were isolated and cultured in vitro. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and transwell assay were performed to evaluate the effect of microRNA-325 on regulating proliferative and migratory abilities of CFs. The regulatory role of microRNA-325 in GLI1 was verified by dual-luciferase reporter gene assay and Western blot.MicroRNA-325 was downregulated in MI area, which was recovered to the normal level 4 weeks later. MicroRNA-325 overexpression could remarkably decrease the mortality and infarcted size of MI rats. Overexpressed microRNA-325 elevated LVEF and LVFS in MI rats. In vitro experiments demonstrated that microRNA-325 remarkably inhibited α-SMA expression, as well as proliferation and migration of CFs. Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay elucidated that microRNA-325 directly inhibited GLI1 expression.Overexpressed microRNA-325 alleviates myocardial fibrosis after myocardial infarction via inhibiting GLI1 expression.

Abstract

The interaction between the supersonic molecular beam (SMB) and electron beam is a key issue in the design of electron ionization mass spectrometry with SMB (EI-MS with SMB). In this paper, one EI ion source prototype was designed based on an electron gun, whose filament was far away from the interaction range and the influence of the filament field could be neglected. The interaction was studied by one high-speed camera and one Faraday cup. The ion flux as well as the variation with stagnation pressure and axial distance was studied. The experimental results were consistent with the simple simulated results about the ionization and photon emission process in the interaction. It was found that higher stagnation pressure was necessary for higher electron energy to acquire the maximum ion flux. The optimized parameters for the EI ion source including the axial position, stagnation pressure, and electron energy were reported. These results were meaningful for the design and optimization of the ion source.

olmutinib is a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), especially for those harboring T790M mutations, the most common reason for other EGFR-TKI resistance. We describe three patients who developed acquired palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) after taking olmutinib, an adverse event which has not been reported in previous generations of EGFR-TKIs. An experiment using 112 21-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers that were randomly allocated to 7 treatments with 8 replicates in a completely randomized design was conducted to assess the effects of Ginkgo biloba leaves (Ginkgo biloba, GL) and Ginkgo biloba extract (EGB) on utilization of nutrients of broiler chickens. The dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal based diets: 1) T1, control diet; 2) T2, T1 + 20 g/kg GL; 3) T3, T1 + 40 g/kg GL; 4) T4, T1 + 60 g/kg GL; 5) T5, T1 + 0.4 g/kg EGB; 6) T6, T1 + 0.8 g/kg EGB; and 7) T7, T1 + 1.2 g/kg EGB. Endogenous losses were obtained from another 16 broilers. Excreta samples were collected to analyze the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE), and amino acids (AA), and GE was analyzed for computation of AME and TME. As compared with those of the control treatment, the apparent digestibility (AD) and true digestibility (TD) of EE, CP, Thr, Val, Ile, Leu, Phe, Lys, His, and Arg were quadratically (P0.05) increased; moreover, the AD and TD of Met was linearly (P0.05) increased as the concentration of the EGB in the diet increased. Increasing GL from 0 to 60 g/kg of diet linearly (P0.05) increased the AD and TD of EE, Thr, Val, Leu, His, and Met and tended (0.05P0.1) to increase the TME, TMEn, and Arg. Supplementation of EGB increased (P0.05) AD and TD of EE, Thr, Val, Ile, Leu, Phe, His, and Arg and tended (0.05P0.1) to increase Lys as compared with those in the GL-supplemented groups. Dietary supplementation of GL and EGB improved the utilization of nutrients of broiler chickens in a dose-dependent manner, and the optimum supplementation levels of GL or EGB in the diet of broilers was 60 or 0.8 g/kg of diet, respectively.

Abstract

SummaryBackground Cirrhotic patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) have high mortality rates. The Chronic Liver Failure–Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (CLIF-SOFA) score, a modified Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, is a newly developed scoring system exclusively for patients with end-stage liver disease. Aim To externally validate the efficacy of the CLIF-SOFA score and evaluate other scoring systems for 6-month mortality in critically ill cirrhotic patients. Methods This study prospectively recorded and analysed the data for 30 demographical parameters and some clinical characteristic variables on day 1 of 250 cirrhotic patients admitted to a 10-bed specialised hepatogastroenterology ICU in a 2000-bed tertiary care referral hospital during the period from September 2010 to August 2013. Results The overall in-hospital and 6-month mortality rate were 58.8% (147/250) and 78.0% (195/250), respectively. Liver diseases were mostly attributed to hepatitis B virus infection (32%). Multiple Cox logistic regression hazard analysis revealed that Glasgow coma scale, both the CLIF-SOFA and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III (ACPACHE III) scores determined on the first day of ICU admission were independent predictors of 6-month mortality. Analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the CLIF-SOFA score had the best discriminatory power (0.900 ± 0.020). Moreover, the cumulative 6-month survival rates differed significantly for patients with a CLIF-SOFA score ≤11 and those with a CLIF-SOFA score >11 on the ICU admission day. Conclusion Both CLIF-SOFA and APACHE III scores are excellent prognosis evaluation tools for critically ill cirrhotic patients.

Abstract

Alkalies are important agricultural contaminants complexly affecting plant metabolism. In this study, rice seedlings were subjected to alkaline stress (NaHCO3:Na2CO3 = 9:1; pH 8.9) for 30 days. The results showed that stress mightily reduced net photosynthetic rate (PN), but slightly decreased transpiration rate and stomatal conductance. This indicated that decline of PN might be a result of nonstomatal factors. Alkaline stress caused a large accumulation of Na+ in leaves up to toxic concentration, which possibly affected chloroplast ultrastructure and photosynthesis. We found that alkaline stress reduced chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, such as ratios of Fv′/Fm′, Fv/Fm, photosystem (PS) II efficiency, and electron transport rates in rice plants, i.e. it influenced the efficiencies of photon capture and electron transport by PSII. This might be a main reason for the decrease of PN under such conditions. Deficiency of minerals could be another reason for the decline of PN. Alkaline stress lowered contents of N, K, Cu, Zn, P, and Fe in rice plants. In addition, the stress strongly affected metabolism of amino acids. This might be caused by imbalance in carbon metabolism as a result of photosynthesis reduction.
