Abstract

Spin Wave (SW) has attracted great interest as information carrier in the past decades. Information transmission and processing between devices is achieved by collective precessional motion of magnetization without charge transfer, which enables lower energy consumption. In this paper, we perform several micromagnetic simulations to excite propagating spin wave and find that smaller external magnetic field can excite spin wave with shorter wavelength. A proper external magnetic(1800–2000mT) can excite spin wave with strong intensity for long-distance propagation. These findings will provide guideline in spin wave based logic devices design.

Abstract

The spin torque nano-oscillator (STNO) with out of film plane fixed layer magnetization, namely the tilted-polarizer spin torque nano-oscillator (TP-STNO), has the advantage of microwave generation without the help of a magnetic field, which makes it promising to be integrated into a chip. In this paper, we present a thermal stability study of TP-STNO by macrospin modeling, in which the thermal noise is induced into the H eff of the Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation in the form of a stochastic magnetic field. The TP-STNO with different tilted angles is studied by numerical simulations based on the macrospin model and nonlinear system theory. Depending on the analysis of Lyapunov exponents as a function of drive current density in the room temperature range, we obtain the drive current density ranges in which TP-STNO can oscillate stably in the presence of thermal noise. These quantified results are essential during the practical usage of TP-STNO.

Abstract

In this paper, porous glass was prepared by phase-separated method and silver-loaded porous glass (SPG) was prepared by ion-exchange method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was measured to characterise the antibacterial property of SPG. Porous glass with average pore diameter of 13 nm was obtained by acid etaching the Na–Si–B phase away. Then, silver ions were loaded in these pores by ion exchange. Impacts of the ion-exchange factors, such as silver nitrate solution concentration, pH value and bathing temperature, on the absorptivity of silver ions and silver-loaded amount were explored in this article. Silver-loaded amount of SPG determined its antibacterial property, namely that MIC decreased with the increase of silver-loaded amount.

Abstract

The hematopoietic growth factor, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), has become one of the few growth factors approved for clinical use. It has therapeutic potential for numerous neurodegenerative diseases; however, at present the cellular effects of G-CSF on the central nervous system remain unclear and in need of investigation. In the present study, we used spinal cord ischemia, a neurodegenerative model, to examine the effects of intrathecal (i.t.) G-CSF on glial cell (microglia and astrocyte) activation and neuroprotective factor expression, including glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) protein expression. Our results indicate that i.t. G-CSF could enhance ischemia-induced microglial activation and inhibit ischemia-induced astrocyte activation. Both GDNF and VEGF-A are upregulated after injury, and i.t. G-CSF could enhance GDNF and VEGF-A expressions after injury. Interestingly, our results indicate that performing i.t. G-CSF alone on normal animals could have the effect of microglial and astrocyte activation and enhanced GDNF and VEGF-A expressions. Furthermore, through laser scanning confocal microscopy, we found that astrocytes may contribute to the majority of GDNF and VEGF-A expressions of G-CSF after spinal cord ischemia. Overall, this G-CSF-induced upregulation suggests that activation of endogenous neuroprotective mechanisms could resist neurodegenerative insults. These observations demonstrate the cellular mechanism of i.t. G-CSF after spinal cord ischemia and confirm the neuroprotective effect of G-CSF after spinal cord ischemia injury.

5. Modeling of long-term creep behavior of structural epoxy adhesives

Abstract

The mechanical properties of polymeric materials change over time, especially when they are subjected to long-term loading regimes. It is imperative that reliable accelerated tests be developed to determine the long-term time-dependent performance of polymers under different environmental conditions. The long-term creep behaviors of a neat epoxy resin and a commercial structural adhesive for bonding aluminum substrates were investigated. The time–temperature superposition method produced a master curve, allowing for the long-term creep compliance to be estimated. The physics-based coupling model was utilized and found to fit well with the long-term creep master curve. The equivalence of the temperature and moisture effects on the creep compliance of the epoxy adhesives was also addressed. Finally, a methodology for predicting the long-term creep behavior of epoxy adhesives was proposed.

Abstract

A CadDX system that confers resistance to Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ was identified in Streptococcus salivarius 57.I. Unlike with other CadDX systems, the expression of the cad promoter was negatively regulated by CadX, and the repression was inducible by Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ , similar to what was found for CadCA systems. The lower G+C content of the S. salivarius cadDX genes suggests acquisition by horizontal gene transfer.

Abstract

ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion experiment designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. It currently involves more than 900 physicists and senior engineers, from both the nuclear and high-energy physics sectors, from over 90 institutions in about 30 countries. The ALICE detector is designed to cope with the highest particle multiplicities above those anticipated for Pb-Pb collisions (dN(ch)/dy up to 8000) and it will be operational at the start-up of the LHC. In addition to heavy systems, the ALICE Collaboration will study collisions of lower-mass ions, which are a means of varying the energy density, and protons (both pp and pA), which primarily provide reference data for the nucleus-nucleus collisions. In addition, the pp data will allow for a number of genuine pp physics studies. The detailed design of the different detector systems has been laid down in a number of Technical Design Reports issued between mid-1998 and the end of 2004. The experiment is currently under construction and will be ready for data taking with both proton and heavy-ion beams at the start-up of the LHC. Since the comprehensive information on detector and physics performance was last published in the ALICE Technical Proposal in 1996, the detector, as well as simulation, reconstruction and analysis software have undergone significant development. The Physics Performance Report (PPR) provides an updated and comprehensive summary of the performance of the various ALICE subsystems, including updates to the Technical Design Reports, as appropriate. The PPR is divided into two volumes. Volume I, published in 2004 (CERN/LHCC 2003-049, ALICE Collaboration 2004 J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 30 1517-1763), contains in four chapters a short theoretical overview and an extensive reference list concerning the physics topics of interest to ALICE, the experimental conditions at the LHC, a short summary and update of the subsystem designs, and a description of the offline framework and Monte Carlo event generators. The present volume, Volume II, contains the majority of the information relevant to the physics performance in proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Following an introductory overview, Chapter 5 describes the combined detector performance and the event reconstruction procedures, based on detailed simulations of the individual subsystems. Chapter 6 describes the analysis and physics reach for a representative sample of physics observables, from global event characteristics to hard processes.
